There is one plantation that is an actual museum/memorial and I encourage anyone who comes to New Orleans or Baton Rouge to make time to visit it.
“Whitney Plantation is a non-profit museum dedicated to the history of slavery, situated on a historical sugar, indigo and rice plantation which operated from 1752-1975. The museum preserves over a dozen historical structures, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Whitney Plantation Historic District.
Today, visitors to the site may self-guide through the grounds with an award-winning audio tour, which is available in six languages. Trained staff members stationed throughout the grounds answer questions and further educate guests about the history of the site. In addition to self-guided tours, visitors may take guided tours with our interpreters, which are offered at regular times throughout the day. We also offer educational tours specially designed for learners in 5th grade and above.
Our professional staff continues to conduct original research about the history of the site and African-American history in southeast Louisiana.”
They also have an Instagram account (@whitneyplantation) that encourage you follow if you have an account.
btw its actually crazy that plantation tours are a thing that exist in the u.s. and that theyre not all set up like memorials similar to concentration camp museums like how is this marketed as a chill tourist activity or wedding destination and not extremely disturbing and depressing to see. worthless country

#haint #paint #louisiana #faded #worn #weathered #wood #blue paint on #whitneyplantation #slavequarters This color blue was used because of a misguided belief that #ghosts and bugs couldn't cross water, so buildings were painted #haintblue to ward them off. Turns out it was actually the #lead and #lye in the paint that deterred insects. No word on success at keeping ghosts out. 😉👻 (at Whitney Plantation)

When’s the last time you sat in a semi quiet house 😉 with a cup of coffee and read a paper? It’s been like forever for me. First we don’t get the Sunday paper anymore. But since it has been showing up on my driveway somehow for the past 4 weeks, I finally sat..opened it.. and read it. No tv news on, only dogs running around, and my kids still sleeping. What interesting articles and finds I would have missed if I didn’t. Happy Sunday peeps! #gameday #sundaypaper #travel #whitneyplantation #neworleans #birdresearch #medicalresearch #environmentalscience #treelobster #turnoffthenoise #reading #readthepaper #cupofjoe #coffeesunday

Whitney Plantation

It’s been about 1 month and some since the trip to New Orleans. I love this city so much! It’s rich in history both good and bad and the food is amazing! I hope to return to visit again! ❤️❤️ #flashbackfriday #neworleans #memories #whitneyplantation #frenchquarter https://www.instagram.com/p/BvVmy4ghho_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1640034529t56

Return to the Whitney
I first went to the Whitney Plantation looking for monuments celebrating slave resistance, and I didn’t find any. As a result, most of my notes from that time (I believe, 2015) are about the 1811 Slave Rebellion exhibit at the Destrehan Plantation instead. (See my post on that below, called “A Bicentennial”.) I had some notes on the Whitney plantation’s haunting, empty-eyed statues of children, and some discomfort with the lanyards, which seemed to assign each patron a historical enslaved person. But leave that aside: it’s easy to criticize.
In Cuba in 2018 at the Caribbean Studies Association, I heard a panelist make reference to the 1811 slave revolt monument at the Whitney Plantation. How could I have missed that? Well, the presenter elaborated, in the Q&A, it’s kind of hidden.
In fact, my initial visit to the Whitney predated the monument’s unveiling in 2017: the presenter was referring to Woodrow Nash’s statue of 63 ceramic heads on pikes, which acknowledges the violent aftermath of the 1811 uprising. (See also: http://slaveryandremembrance.org/collections/object/?id=OB0102) In saying it was “hidden” he was referencing some controversy surrounding the installation. The official line from the Whitney staff is that this monument is not included on the official tour only because it was a late addition and there just isn’t enough time on a long walking tour that, for most of the year, occurs in hot weather (pers comm). Others might suspect that the fact that the monument is referenced by tour guides but not included as an official part of the tour is part of a plot to downplay the history of slave revolt. Less offensively, some surmise that its cloistering off the path is just meant to limit complaints from parents, as it is quite gruesome-- although the rest of the tour deals with other horrifying details of the slave trade, the director of operations gently reminded me. Another more generous interpretation might be that the monument is not hidden but shielded behind a high hedge, off the regular path, to create a quiet, solemn space for reflection on these martyrs’ sacrifice and the indignity of the treatment of their human remains by the slaveholders who executed them.
Regardless, there is an effort made to treat the dead with respect. Yvonne Holden, director at the Whitney, told me that an annual blessing is performed by a local group, and that they have adorned the severed heads with talismans like cowrie shells. I’m doing further research on this aspect of the memorial and the way it renders the monument collaborative. But I should note, too, in closing, that I saw several installations at the Whitney upon my visit this time (in Nov. 2019) devoted to resistance: in the lobby, there were placards devoted to “Suppression and Resistance,” “The Haitian Revolution,” and “The German Coast Uprising.” Most likely these have been added since 2015, but it is possible that last time, I just missed them.
My thanks to Yvonne Holder, director of operations at the Whitney. Photos are used here with permission of the Whitney Plantation. Photo credit to Christina Connor, my traveling companion.

via Whitney Plantation on Facebook - On this day in 1811, the largest uprising of enslaved people in the U.S. South erupted on the German Coast of Louisiana, lasting till the 11th of January. About 500 enslaved people of St. Charles and St. John the Baptist parishes rose up and walked downstream toward New Orleans. They were stopped after a rough battle against the local militia backed by regular troops. Many were killed in the action or were reported missing. Dozens of enslaved people were condemned to death, executed, and beheaded, at the plantations to which they belonged. The heads were planted on poles at places where each of them had undergone punishment. Been writing a story that takes place on a sugarcane plantation near New Orleans in 1860. I’ve been drawing inspiration from both the Whitney Plantation (pictured) and Laura Plantation. That’s the thing with that part of Louisiana. It stays with you long after you leave. #writing #onwriting #neworleans #nola #whitneyplantation #louisiana #travel #nofilter #inspirition (at Whitney Plantation) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv1PpfYlKYl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3srx501dbard
