Mohammed Shawa was a White Helmets volunteer and a father of three little girls, one of them just 5 days old. ‘He could not have enough of her smile, her eyes.’ His friends say he was always smiling.

On the 4th of May, Mohammed was killed in a double-tap attack during a rescue in Idlib. Channel 4 News have analysed the heartbreaking footage of the attack from multiple sources to prove that the White Helmets crew were deliberately targeted. They call it a war crime, but that title almost seems too small for the pain and devastation it caused, to his family, his fellow volunteers and his best friend who raced desperately to the hospital to see him. Mohammed died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

In all, 267 White Helmets have been killed in attacks, to date. Russia and the Syrian regime frequently target them with deliberate double-tap airstrikes. The first strike hits civilians and the second hits the White Helmets, when they arrive to rescue them. 10 White Helmets have been killed in this latest onslaught on northern Syria.

’to save a life is to save all of humanity’

The White helmets, (also known as the Syria Civil Defence) are a volunteer organisation that operate in Syria (and Turkey) since the first outbreak of conflict in Syria in late 2012. They are a heroic union of caregivers and rescuers who are usually the first respondents in bombings and shellings. Their work includes evacuation of bombed sites, emergency first aid, search and rescue and other emergency service roles.

The volunteers, comprised of former bakers, engineers, pharmacists, salesmen and carpenters, pledge commitment to the principles of ‘humanity, solidarity and impartiality’ as outlined in International Humanitarian Law. Their inspiring work has earned them recognition at the highest international levels and they have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Their motto is taken from the Holy Quran, ‘to save a life is to save all of humanity’. In a dark world where over 500,000 lives have been taken by corrupt political forces, the White Helmets are a beacon of light for Syria’s remaining people.

An instrumental process in the configuration of the team was the primary support and training which was provided by the Mayday Rescue Foundation, which was established by former British army official James Le Mesurier. It was due to developments like these in the organisation that they became world renowned, with support from a combination of NGO’s, international charities and public fundraising campaigns. Unfortunately, Le Mesurier OBE died earlier today in Turkey, with the cause of death unknown.

It is also extremely instrumental to know that the White Helmets are an equal opportunity organisation, with women also fighting the frontline: 221 women are trained in medical care and light search and rescue work. They also undertake much bigger projects, providing trauma counselling, community education and maternal health clinics. These long term investments are extremely beneficial and have been life changing for Syria’s people, in a country where public infrastructure and services are dire and limited.

Since their formation, they have saved over 115,000 lives, with at least 270 of the team losing their lives in their selfless sacrifice to help those in need. Although their intentions were only ever pure, there have been numerous attempts to defame them by Assad as well as Russian sponsored media organisations such as RT. These false claims include claims of their links to terrorists (Al Qaeda) amongst other conspiracies.

‘Their data and eyewitness testimonies, as well as photographic evidence, have been vital sources of information for international investigations into war crimes compiled by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and human rights groups. These crimes include the use of chemical weapons, the collective punishment of civilians through starvation sieges and the targeting of hospitals and medical facilities. The leading perpetrators of these crimes, the Syrian government and its ally Russia, are targeting the White Helmets on the ground and attempting to discredit their work online and in the media. ‘
