I’m glad you like Odell! He’s a shade elemental (except not really but shhh) and ex-warlock familiar and one of the main characters in my book Rattlesnake Chronicles. He loves dancing, has problems with sunlight, and laughs at any and all puns (which is good for snake man and eventual love interest Si, who is rumored to be entirely constructed of Puns and nothing else). He’s a good good boy, Best boy, deserves the Best.

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would callan “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan inadvance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?) 

Interesting question, because these days I’m not really convinced that this is a real distinction.

I mean, clearly there are two extremes of the spectrum, in that some fic authors will start a story with no idea of where it’s going (usually abandoning it after a couple of chapters) and others write out an extremely detailed scene-by-scene outline from which they don’t deviate, but that’s only possible up to a certain length of fic.

For fics which are more than 20k, say, almost every writer is going to be somewhere in-between; we all start out with an idea of the arc of the story and where it’s going to end (even if we’re not sure quite how it’s going to get there) and we all allow the possibility of adding new scenes or changing the flow of events if it seems better as we go along. And the longer and more ambitious a story is, the more likely it is that you will have to ‘garden’ it, because it will have too many moving pieces and subplots to work out right the first time.

I think perhaps the question may in fact be another way of asking ‘how much do you redraft’? If you write a story through once and then just edit for spelling and grammar, you will in effect be an ‘architect’ because you never give yourself the opportunity to develop the story; if you put a story through several drafts you will inevitably be a ‘gardener’ because you will be looking for ways to improve it and open to new ideas for it.

I’d actually be interested to know what GRRM thought he meant when he made the distinction, because he’s a wise old bird when it comes to writing and he can’t really think that one can ‘architect’ a book from start to finish; it’s a distinction which does seem to me to have been adopted in an unhelpfully simplified form among fans.

[Added:] But I didn’t answer the question about me! I always have a clear idea of the story arc, however long it’s going to be, and I usually write the end scene very early on so I know where I’m aiming to get to; but there are usually a lot of surprises along the way when I come up with new sections of plot or find that my first ideas were too simple and that I need to work a bit harder to get the effect that I want. Usually I find that I’m rushing through events too fast, and I have to give the characters time to react and come to conclusions before the next thing.

It goes on from there, and people close to him notice it, but they don’t say anything, because it’s so sad. Then there’s a meeting and there’s the real Eduardo and they don’t even speak, but then the meeting’s over and Eduardo forgot his bag and Mark is still sitting there, alone, but talking to… him.

3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?

Ugh, this is tough! I hate to leave the older ones out of the running, but at the very least my editing’s gotten better since then (I just reread an older story and wanted to take it to bits), so I’m confining this to the last fandom or two.

Contenders from the Critical Role batch: Disguises and Deceptions, because writing Raishan was too much fun; Of Oak and Ash and Grasping Thorn and Green in the Crown, because oh, Cassandra; and A Winter’s Masquerade, because (as the previous two stories also ought to indicate) I loved tinkering around with hints of Whitestone’s folklore.

Borderlands: Marked might be the best. It does require some knowledge of the previous games, but that whole idea of “if Rhys’ tattoos made everyone wonder about sirens, then what in the world would Jack think?” was irresistible.

Thanks for the ask! Sorry for the cat+keyboard-induced delay in replying!:P 

H: How would you describe your style?

I guess I’d hope that my style is pretty ‘cinematic’! I’ve done a variety of genres but I feel like they all have a pretty cinematic pace in common, as well as also tending to be being pretty visual. I’d like to think my fics are ‘stylish’ but without being ‘light’ if that makes sense!

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

Shoutout to whitedatura for being one of the few fic writers to give me genuine Feelings-with-a-capital-F for Varaday. But I’m obsessed with their Drink Like A Fish, Lie Like A Stone fic. The relationship development is phenomenal (I have a thing where characters hook up and then it just gets totally compartmentalized, even if we know it really did Mean Something), and the Vasquez POV is so well done.  I’m very much looking forward to the last chapter, it’s brilliant

Q: How do you feel about collaborations?

I feel good about them! I did one once with @yoporkchopsandwiches for Breaking Bad because we had all these running headcanons about a ‘Victorian Breaking Bad AU with opium dens instead of meth’, and decided to turn them into a fic, and it was a lot of fun! From what I remember we outlined the whole fic and then basically took turns swapping chapters, each writing one, and then swapping scenes within the chapters, the closer to the end it got. And it was a fairly seamless co-writing experience! And even if there are moments where you’re think ‘I’d do this differently’ or ‘I think it should be like this’ it’s actually staggeringly easy to let go haha, ‘cause like…if you wanted to do everything ‘like this’, you could just write your own fic, couldn’t you? Wanting to do everything a specific way kind of defeats the point of a collaboration, so doing things differently than you normally would was part of the fun

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

Omg picking favourites makes me so stressed haha, so in the interests of not being totally biased I’m just going to mention 3 fics I’ve been enjoying lately by 3 different authors who I don’t really know that well:

Drink Like a Fish, Lie Like a Stone by Whitedatura: I mentioned it above, but it’s SO GOOD, and it’s not often I feel genuinely emotionally invested in Varaday beyond ‘they’re both hot and it could work’.   It’s also a really entertaining ensemble fic with everyone so well portrayed, and the plot is really skillfully done, not to mention appealingly twisty and turny and well. I’m very behind on leaving comments for it but it’s gr8

Rose Creek Community Radio by keycchan: this is such a LOVELY fic. I’ve only listened to a little of Nightvale, so I don’t know which ideas are canon and which the ones are the author’s own invention, but the fusion feels really seamless. Billy as the ‘I’m just going to take in a deep breath and let it out really slowly right now’ scientist, and Goodnight as the effusive radio show host is Perfection, and it’s such a cosy, feel-good fic to curl up with 

Tall Tales by kay_cricketed: This was one of my stand-out faves from the Mag7 holiday fic exchange, and it absolutely blew me away with how original and beautifully it was written. The concept and execution was so outstanding and fantastical, and the descriptions are to die for

So those are three I really like for different reasons, but I mean there are so many staggeringly talented people in this fandom, yourself included, so I really could have said anyone or any fic and totally meant it.

I've been watching Breaking Bad for the first time (because why not watch shows years after everyone's seen them, yeah?) and am halfway through season 3. Something made me remember you'd written a Breaking Bad fic a while back and now I am even more eager to get through the show so I can read it.

Hi, @whitedatura!  Breaking Bad has some of the most skillfully controlled screenwriting and stunning cinematography I’ve ever seen in television.  I watched it at one of my lowest points in the past two years, and for some reason it was the kind of chaotic catharsis I needed.  I sincerely doubt I will ever write anything like the fic I produced in that instance ever again; rereading it almost feels like reading something written by someone else.  Not in a negative way, but in a startled way, like…did I feel so powerless (on account of what someone did to me at that point in time) that writing something that vindictive and power-balance-shifting was the only thing that was going to make me feel better?  It’s an example of one of those brief, one-off fandom blips that feels like a fever-dream in retrospect.
