cws @ det // comerica park // 21 august 2006
i went with some of my college friends to see the tigers play the white sox. due to my october 2005 heartbreak, for this game (and many, many others) i was a tigers fan. comerica park is in my top 3 of most beautiful parks i've visited.
the "who's your tiger?" promotion was kind of great. craig monroe was mine that season (i can't remember why), and for a long time after that, curtis granderson.
[while i try to figure out if i'm still a baseball fan, i'm archiving my baseball memories here.]

As someone who was obsessed with circus-themed horror stuff for most of high school I am RARING to hear about Circus Luna 👀👀
Well, since you specifically mentioned circus-themed horror stuff, I guess I must tell you a little bit about the circus itself!
The Circus Luna has been around for longer than anyone living in the town of Bradbury knows, at least as long as there have been trains in North America. That's because, since the first recorded instance of its appearance, it has travelled cross-country on an old-fashioned circus train. The hulking, bulbous black locomotive looks coal-powered, belching black smoke across the horizon. The paint on the advertisements on the sides has peeled in such a way that they've become (unintentionally?) deeply unsettling, tightrope walkers with black holes for eyes and lions and tigers with gaping black maws. The logo, though, an enormous luna moth, is always pristine.
(The circus comes when it is called. If anyone knew what calls it, then perhaps they could have avoided its attention.)
The circus itself appears with very little announcement, heralded by a campaign of flyers. (No one in town has ever seen someone putting one up.) These have changed, over time, depending on what's popular, what the tastes of the audience are. Sometimes they focus on the exotic animals one might see, sometimes the acrobats. Sometimes the freakshow. In 2006, they advertised the circus as a Tim Burton-esque spooky spectacle, with bold graphic designs in red and black and white.
The circus...is a circus. When it rolls into town, it pitches tents and sets up rings in a field or fairground, wherever there's room. (It's never been clear to anyone whether, in the age of permits and permissions, of land ownership and zoning, all the appropriate hoops have been jumped through, and if they have, when and how they might have been. Somehow, though, the circus is never in the way of any other big scheduled event, and has never been evicted once it's pitched its tents.) It plays the shows it advertises, to whatever audience it manages to attract.
The show never starts before sundown.
(Since 1983, a girl who doesn't look like she can be much older than fifteen, with huge masses of fire-red curls and a mischievous smile, has had an aerial silks act that's been the centre of the show.)
Most people visit the circus. They see a show. They enjoy themselves. And they go home, at the end of the night. As far as most of the inhabitants of Bradbury know, as far as they are concerned, they had a lovely time at a completely ordinary, if a little old-fashioned, circus. They might have been bothered, a little, by big black flies attracted to their corndogs or cotton candy. They likely were awed by something they saw, though they might have a difficult time describing it, when asked. They might wonder if the circus will come back again. And it might, in their lifetime. Or it might not. They may have forgotten all about it by the time it comes back again.
But every time the circus visits Bradbury, people disappear.

2022 Oscars Trivia (Post-Ceremony)
Everything Everywhere All at Once, with 7 wins, received the most awards since Gravity (2013, 7 wins) and the most awards for a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire (2008, 8 wins).
EEAAO is the third film to win 3 acting awards, after A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and Network (1976), each of which only won 4 Oscars and neither of which won Best Picture. Like Streetcar, EEAAO only missed Best Actor. Unlike either film, EEAAO did not lose in its missing category, as it wasn't nominated for Best Actor and indeed had no one to nominate.
Michelle Yeoh is the second woman of color and the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. The first woman of color, Halle Berry (Monster's Ball, 2001), handed her the award -- not by accident, I'm sure!
Ke Huy Quan is the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, after Haing S. Ngor (The Killing Fields, 1984).
This is the first time multiple actors of East Asian descent have won.
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are the third pair to win Best Director, after Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise (West Side Story, 1961) and Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, 2007).
Thanks to Daniel Kwan's win, the non-white-man Best Director streak continues. Of the past 11 years, only one had a sole win by a white male director: Damien Chazelle (La La Land, 2016), whose film Babylon was shut out this year.
Michelle Yeoh is the 8th woman to win Best Actress at age 60+, and this is the 11th such Best Actress win.
At age 64, Jamie Lee Curtis is the 9th-oldest woman to win Best Supporting Actress.
Sarah Polley is the second consecutive woman to win Best Adapted Screenplay (after Sian Heder for CODA). After a long drought, three consecutive years have included female screenplay winners (including Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman).
Daniels are the 7th/8th people to win Best Director at age 35 or younger, and this is the 8th such win.
Guillermo del Toro is the first Latin America-born Best Animated Feature winner (previous Latino/a winners Phil Lord and Yvett Merino were born and raised in the US).
Diane Warren continues to hold the record for most Original Song nominations without a win (14) and continues to be the woman with the most Oscar nominations without a win.
This is the second consecutive year that every winner in the Big 8 won their first award in the category, and the first time since 2014 that each of them was a first-time winner overall.
Five Best Picture nominees went home empty-handed: The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, and Triangle of Sadness. That's the most since 2013 (American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Nebraska, Philomena, The Wolf of Wall Street), i.e., the last time a movie won 7 Oscars.
This is the first time since 2017 (The Shape of Water) that the most-nominated film a) won Best Picture and b) won the most awards of the night.
"Naatu Naatu" is the first song from an Indian film to win.
All Quiet on the Western Front is the fourth Best Picture nominee in five years to win Best International Feature. It is Germany's first win since The Lives of Others (2006) and third overall (Nowhere in Africa, 2002).
Brendan Fraser is the first man to win an acting Oscar for a film directed by Darren Aronofsky, who previously directed Natalie Portman to a Best Actress win for Black Swan in 2010.
Dan Sudick continues to hold the record for most Visual Effects nominations without a win (13).
All Quiet on the Western Front is the fourth non-English-language film to win four Oscars (Fanny and Alexander, 1982; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000; Parasite, 2019).
EEAAO is the first science fiction film to win Best Picture.
Ruth Carter is the first black woman to win multiple competitive Oscars. She was the only black winner this year, the fewest since 2015, which had no black winners.
Matthew Freud, co-winner of Best Animated Short, is Sigmund Freud's great-grandson, is divorced from Rupert Murdoch's daughter, and just generally has an interesting Wikipedia page.
The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win Best Documentary Short.
As Jamie Lee Curtis noted in her speech, both of her parents were nominated for Oscars but did not win: Tony Curtis for The Defiant Ones in 1958 and Janet Leigh for Psycho in 1960.
This is the second time all four acting winners have been over 50, following 1981: Henry Fonda (76), Katharine Hepburn (74), John Gielgud (77), Maureen Stapleton (56). With an average age of 57.25, this is the third-oldest acting quartet, after 1981 (avg. 70.75) and 2020 (avg. 62.75).
This is the second consecutive year that all four acting winners have been first-time winners, and the first time since 2005 that all four acting winners have been first-time nominees (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney, Rachel Weisz).
This is the first time since 1955 that all acting and directing winners have been first-time nominees (Delbert Mann, Ernest Borgnine, Anna Magnani, Jack Lemmon, Jo Van Fleet).
This is the second consecutive year that only three films have won multiple awards.
The Black Panther movies are the first movie + sequel to win Best Costume Design, with both awards going to Ruth Carter.
EEAAO is the first film to win 6 of the Big 8 awards. A film can win a maximum of 7, since it can't be eligible in both screenplay categories, and EEAAO's only below-the-line win was Film Editing.
Navalny is the first CNN film to win an Oscar.
#oscars project 2022#oscars trivia#really this post is just for me but it doesn't hurt to put it here

Notes from Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan by Jake Adelstein
note: take book with grain of salt as author is greatly self-aggrandizing, but provides some nice color on yakuza
many yakuza prefer to be called 'gokudo' (the ultimate path)
shobadai - slang for protection money paid to the yakuza
"Santa Fe was a book of nude photos of the popular actress Rie Miyazawa" that showed her pubic hair. When authorities didn't pursue the book for breaking obscenity laws based on the photos' "artistic qualities" it opened the floodgates to the relaxing of those policies enjoyed to this day
typical divisions of a police station: violent crime, white-collar, fraud, , traffic, juvenile crime, prevention, lifestyle/vice, plus an organized crime control division, which would pursue drugs, credit card fraud, and human trafficking
kind of neat - the idea of exotic animals being sold to yakuza to scare people. who would have a leashed tiger?
When someone leaves the yakuza, a letter is circulated to all members, either a hamonjo - this person is no longer in the organization, don't do business or associate with them; or a zetsuenjo - betrayer hunt this person down.
if a murdered body is found with the head facing North, that may indicate a killer feeling remorse as that's how dead bodies are laid out.
suicides remove their socks and shoes as it's rude to wear into the afterlife
There are two major types of yakuza: tekiya, low-level con artists and bakuto, the big leagues, who engage in predatory lending, human trafficking, the racket, and blackmailing corporations. They are over half Korean-Japanese and the dowa, formerly untouchable caste of Japan.
The major yakuza have lots of sub-groups that pay monthly dues. The Yamaguchi-gumi (biggest) takes in about $50M in private equity monthly and this is considered a conservative estimate.
The police don’t have the authority to wiretap, offer plea bargains, or witness protection in yakuza investigations, which limited their ability to effectively prosecute them. It’s also not illegal to be in a criminal organization.
As of 2006, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police compiled a list of ~1k front companies in greater Tokyo, 20% real estate with significant investment in securities, auditing, consulting, and other financiers.
Police sometimes call the yakuza “Realtors” lol
In 2008, a major Corporation was found to be paying over $100M USD to yakuza to remove tenants from properties they wanted to purchase (this is called jiage or land-sharking and is big because tenant laws are so protective.)
The bosses of some yakuza groups are minor celebrities and will be photographed and reported on having meetings/dinners with politicians, or will grant TV interviews!!!
Marubo cops – organized crime detectives
One business model: landsharking, moving yakuza into buildings before they can be repossessed and then buying them themselves or getting money from the original owner for the service, protection money from the sex trade, and the cash cow, extortion (specifically, shaking down business people with embarrassing secrets). They would do the same with companies in financial trouble. They would take out loans from midsize banks using the company’s real estate as collateral, but then when the company would go bankrupt, those loans would go unpaid. The Sumiyoshi-kain also ran staffing companies, loansharking, and an insurance company specializing in false claims to rip off real insurance companies. A collection agency for recovering bad debts for real loan companies. Pawnshops for trafficked goods. A talent agency for porn (paid well not coerced). Transportation and security for large events. Take construction contracts and then subcontract out, pocketing the difference. Set up a fake political org for the tax break and a way to launder money. Have your extortees pay to receive your newsletter.
kabukicho was the undisputed red light district of tokyo before it got partially cleaned up following the 2001 fire of the Myojo 56 building where 40+ people died. It is speculated that the yakuza burnt it down after not being paid its protection money by the mahjong parlor inside.
At least in 1999 during the time of this book, a reporter tells him: "Nine times out of ten, no matter how much it looks like a murder, the Shinjuku police will write it up as a case of assault resulting in death - manslaughter? Why? So they don't have to launch a full investigation." Murders of 'low-lifes' not deemed newsworthy. What WAS newsworthy was anything involving someone famous, a civilian, or a teenager. Maybe a brewing gang war.
The reason the anti prostitution law is on the books is to protect girls who were being sold into sexual slavery after the war. That's why they only go after the pimps and owners, not the girls.
one thing to track is i keep writing big clubs, when i should go smaller, seedier, and more participatory. one stage, men using vibrators on the fully naked dancer. also kinkier: more costumes, piss play, the works.
downtown there are typical haunts where the yakuza hang out near their offices, where they get coffee and shoot the shit. and it's not one organization, but all of them.
lots of young girls (high school to college) get addicted to the host clubs and run up a big tab at which point they get redirected into becoming hostesses or joining the sex trade themselves. these are usually unlicensed clubs that have no police protection and are therefore easy marks for the yakuza. a good host club makes about $300k a year in 1999; the legit hosts can make big money too, think $6-10k a month not including gifts. hosts and hostesses often frequent each other's places when they get off work, so they're often busiest at like 4am/late late hours.
Roppongi is known for its foreigners. The place to go if Japanese people and foreigners are looking to connect (/connect!) Before the bubble burst, Roppongi was known for its highbrow establishments, but it's gone sleazy with big clubs, drugs, and all the typical sex trade establishments. It's nicknamed "High-Touch Town"
Because yakuza bosses can be held liable (and sued) for the crimes of their subordinates, when someone gets collared, it's typical to throw them out of the org (at least on the surface) claiming they were just a bad egg to limit liability. Yakuza will also sue newspapers and other organizations that call their businesses fronts or old members yakuza. Very good lawyers.
money laundering - hostess clubs and sex parlors (have your employees act as regulars and pay there); donations to religious organizations you run from the profits, own restaurants, r&r spots, and more and have your employees go there with the profits.
there are legal limits on interest rates for consumer loans, but yakuza loan sharks obviously go way above that. keep database of all customers at one establishment to see when the loan is falling behind, and then reach out from one of your other loan offices to offer a loan with even higher interest rates to double prey upon your victims.
more swords as weapons since gun use penalties are so high!
not uncommon for yakuza to own the movie studios making yakuza films which has promise as a funny detail; also more chopped fingers, toes transplanted as fake fingers, etc.
Tokarev - Russian guns popular in the 90s with yakuza
"that's why we farm out the dirty work to the Chinese and the Iranians. If they get caught, they don't talk and they just get deproted."
control the media by running the top talent agencies and denying them access to top entertainment talent if they publish unfavorable reporting

GTAW: Chapter 18 Notes
1. If you’re a baseball lover like myself, and want to learn more about Japan’s passion for the sport, and the differences between the American and Japanese philosophies, I’d recommend “You Gotta Have Wa: When Two Cultures Collide on the Baseball Diamond” by Robert Whiting. The two quotes above I got from this book.
But if you don’t want to do that, you can watch this 10 minute video instead.😜
A ⚾️ — Also, there’s no easy way to say this, but the only way to understand baseball is to watch a game. Multiple games, at that. You can watch complete games on YouTube or the MLB website. You can also watch instructional YouTube videos, but I can almost guarantee you’ll be left confused. There are a lot of unwritten rules in baseball and it can be difficult for a beginner to fully grasp them right off the bat (see what I did there?😉). However, I found some videos that might help as you learn.
Brief history of baseball in America (funny/dark humor)
I would also be remissed if I didn’t mention anything about The Negro League. Very important stuff, especially when explaining how baseball first came to Japan.
⭐️The different kinds of pitches.
The history of the baseball cap.
⭐️The official rules of baseball.
B ⚾️ — Major League Baseball (MLB) is the #1 pro baseball organization in the United States (and Canada). It comprises 30 teams and is divided into two leagues: the Nation League (NL), and the American League (AL).
The regular MLB season consists of 162 games a year.
The annual championship of the MLB is known as the World Series. Why it is called the World Series when it’s only held in the United States (and Canada)? Good question. I have absolutely no clue. Chalk it up to American arrogance, I guess.
The MLB is responsible for maintaining and interpreting the official rules of baseball. All international leagues, including those in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Venezuela, you name it, more or less adhere to the official rules of baseball as codified by the MLB. Think of baseball as a regulated good, like champagne or Swiss chocolate.
And to put money in perspective, The New York Yankees are the most valuable MLB team, worth an estimated $7.1 billion alone, which doesn’t even count the other 29 teams, many of whom also range in the billions and multi-millions.
C ⚾️ — The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) is the #1 professional baseball organization in Japan. Locally it is called the Puro Yakyū. It comprises 12 teams and like the MLB is also divided into two leagues: The Central League (CL), and the Pacific League (PL).
The regular NPB season consists of 130 games a year.
The annual championship of the NPB is called the Japan Series, which makes sense, unlike the MLB.
The two most successful teams in NPB history are the Yomiuri Giants and the Hanshin Tigers.
D ⚾️ — The World Baseball Classic is the FIFA World Cup of baseball, though not as many countries participate. It’s only been around since 2006 and sometimes crazy drama happens and it’s awesome. Most baseball lovers (and I’m thinking specifically of snobbish Americans) consider the World Series to be the ultimate championship, not the WBC, but try telling that to the Japanese.😂
Fun fact. Team Japan were the first WBC champions in 2006 and they are this year's 2023 champions as well. Pretty neat. I watched the game. It was electric. Congratulations Japan!!!🥳🎉🎊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
E ⚾️ — In the past it was heavily frowned upon for a Japanese player to sign with an MLB team, mainly for two reasons: One, Japanese natives didn’t like their top athletes playing away overseas. And two, it was seen as a selfish money grab. (MLB players get paid A LOT more than their international counterparts.) Although, nowadays when a Japanese player makes it to “the Bigs” it’s seen as an act of national pride, which is why Satoru has a Seattle Mariners “away” jersey (Ichiro Suzuki) and a St. Louis Cardinals “home” jersey (So Taguchi). 🇯🇵
F ⚾️ Satoru says he doesn’t have a favorite player, but when Shohei Ohtani steps onto the scene that all changes. He develops a HUGE man-crush on the guy and won’t shut up about him:
SATORU: The man is a beast, Hannah. A Beast!!!😤
HANNAH: Yes, dear, we know. You’ve said it a million times already.😒
2. Here, Satoru quotes from the Inquiry of Urga. While not a major religious text, I’d like to think Satoru is well versed in many texts. It’s also worth noting that most Japanese are not religious, but I think religion makes the plot more interesting.
3. Okashi Gaku’s “Cake in a Can.”
Overview of some Japanese vending machines. I would love having a security goat. 🐐 I pass on the bugs though.🐜🐜🐜
4. Koishikawa Kōraku-en (Garden for Taking Pleasure Later) really is located right next to the Tokyo Dome as is an amusement park.
The “Big O” Ferris wheel.
Going up inside Tokyo Tower.
The Skytree is actually twice as tall as Tokyo Tower, but I think Tokyo Tower is prettier and more romantic since it’s modeled after the Eiffel Tower, so that was my rationale.
I have no idea whether Hannah would be able to see all of Tokyo from that height, but let’s pretend. Tokyo is massive.
5. This is also a good thing to point out, but my beta reader asked me why I didn’t mention anything about sumo wrestling, since it is technically Japan’s official national sport. Long story short, sumo has been embroiled in a lot of scandals recently and is not as popular with younger audiences. That being said, sumo will never disappear from Japan and holds great cultural significance, but viewership wise, baseball is more popular than sumo. However, you can watch this short video and decide for yourself.
Here is also a brief history of sumo.

welcome home NANCY WHEELER (keira knightley fc)
hope you brought your tissues with you! be sure to check in at home or to your hotel and don’t forget to always look over your shoulder. this is hawkins, after all.
basics
[KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER] When’s the last time anyone heard anything about [NANCY WHEELER]? Old friends remember them as [INVESTIGATIVE & BRAVE] but also [UPTIGHT & METICULOLUS], no wonder they’re still known as [THE DETECTIVE] around town. Today, in 2006, they are [THIRTY-NINE] and some people say they remind them of [A FRESHLY INKED PEN DABBING ONTO A NOTEPAD, RUNNING AWAY FROM HER OWN PROBLEMS, & KEEPING A HANDGUN ON HER AT ALL TIMES…. JUST IN CASE]. [lexi, 22, she/her, est].
biography
When Nancy Wheeler left for college, she had no intent of ever returning to Hawkins, Indiana for more than a holiday or a school break. After Will and El’s death and the defeat of Vecna, she felt like there was no place for her in Hawkins anymore. Mike was grieving in his own way (shutting her out), Jonathan was grieving in his own way (breaking up), and all she had was a one way ticket out of that hell hole.
College was fun! Nancy built a little life for herself out there. She joined a sorority (much to Karen Wheeler’s happiness), eventually moving into their house come her sophomore year, became editor-in-chief of The Berkeley Beacon, had a shitty boyfriend, maintained a 4.0 GPA, and realized that maybe life could just be normal. There would always be the pang in her chest every time she returned to Hawkins that shit would hit the fan, but for four solid years, it didn’t.
After graduating with Latin honors (Summa cum laude, but who’s bragging?), she had plenty of job offers lined up, but took one at The New York Register. It was lesser known than The New York Times, but she wanted something smaller just to feel like she was making a difference. A few measly years in and Nancy was actually one of the top reporters, but she didn’t feel like she was fighting crime. As a teenager, she was fighting literal Demogorgon’s and Vecna. Reporting on petty crime and the happenings of such a big city just felt meaningless. So, she packed her bags and moved back to Hawkins. It had been years since anything happened in town, so she felt like it was a safe choice. Besides, Mike had just welcomed his son into the world and God knows he would need help.
When Mike was institutionalized, there was someone who needed to watch Luke. Nancy felt like the obvious choice. Karen was still in her prime, but her time for taking care of children was long past her, and Nancy was actually related to Mike with a decent paying job and a clean background. For just a few months, it was her and Luke. Despite not wanting children of her own, she took her role as Luke’s caretaker very seriously. It gave her a look at the life that her parents always wanted for her. A white picket fence, married to Steve Harrington, with a couple of kids, and a dog. It was a nice dream to live in for a handful of months, but it wasn’t her reality forever.
When Mike came home and Luke was no longer her number one priority, Nancy shifted her attention to The Watcher and, to be honest, she loves it. It’s exactly what she always wanted. Traveling and reporting on weird happenstances. It allows her to actually use her investigative prowess for something meaningful. If it wasn’t for how busy she was and for how arrogant Mike was, Nancy would take Luke in herself because… Well, to put it nicely, Mike’s doing a bit of a shit job (in Nancy’s opinion) in the parenting field. So, when she is home, Nancy tries to make it a priority to pick up Luke from school whenever Mike works late or if he has a school event, she’ll be in the front row. Being an aunt when Mike Wheeler is the father is a full time job!
time capsule
In 1983, Nancy Wheeler put her Tigers cheerleading uniform in the capsule. She had no better use for it since she quit the team earlier that year. Her mom had made her join the team and after Barb’s death, it just didn’t seem worth it to be a part of something she disliked. Besides, it felt like a right of passage after everything that happened that year. It felt like a way of her saying goodbye to her childhood and the girl she once was.
In 1984, Nancy Wheeler put Barb’s obituary in the time capsule. She had died the year prior, but it was only “confirmed” that year. Nancy hoped it would keep people remembering her when it was eventually dug up.
In 1985, Nancy put a Jazzercise coupon that she never used in the time capsule. Her mom gave it to her, but the summer of 1985, she was a bit more than preoccupied. So, into the time capsule it went. Maybe Jazzercise would survive the test of time.
In 1986, Nancy threw her diary in the time capsule. She no longer had a use for it and honestly, the last thing she wanted to remember was how she pined for both Steve Harrington and Jonathan Byers in high school.
