Britt’s Fics
Dark is the Night • Banana Fish • The Greatest Showman
A masterpost of most fics I’ve written on AO3. I’ll try to remember to update this whenever I post a fic, but… no promises.
Sorted by fandom with the fewest to the most fics, then sub-sorted by ranking and newest - oldest! Multi-chapter fics marked whether complete or incomplete.
Summaries and warnings, if applicable, included.
——
Dark is the Night - book series (Kelley York, Rowan Altwood)
let me land softly (back in your arms) (Rated G) - James and William spend a rainy night at home.
all I need is you (Rated T, graphic depictions of violence) - William has nightmares after a particular ghost hunting session.
Dear William (Rated T) - After two years since leaving Whisperwood, one year since getting “married” in an unofficial wedding ceremony led by Virgil, and five years together overall, James shows William a collection of unsent letters dating back to the very first day they met.
begin again (Rated M, elements of rape/non-con) - William doesn’t know it at first, but he saved James right when James needed saving the most.
*
Banana Fish
angel eyes (Rated G, creator chose not to use archive warnings) - The first thing Okumura Eiji fell in love with were Ash’s eyes.
out of my mind (Rated G, elements of PTSD, Ash Lynx Lives) - In order to learn Japanese, Ash subjects himself to harassment from a stalker green owl.
lullaby (Rated G, elements of PTSD, Ash Lynx Lives) - Ash has nightmares, but Eiji is there.
take me to the place where time stood still (Rated T, elements of PTSD, Ash Lynx Lives) - In which Ash learns that Eiji has never been to the carnival.
tears don’t fall (Rated T, graphic depictions of violence, pet death, gun violence — but hey, Ash is still alive!) - In which Ash opens up to Eiji about a childhood memory that occurred before he joined Little League.
ghost of you (Rated T, takes place after the canon events of the last episode) - In which Michael has an “imaginary” friend.
only seventeen (Rated T, takes place during the events of Episode 9, open-ended ending) - In which Dino goes after the one thing that will hurt Ash the most.
never enough (Rated T, major character death and suicidal elements, open-ended ending) - Ash doesn’t plan on sticking around. It’s for Eiji’s own good.
before the monsters catch up to you (Rated T, creator chose not to use archive warnings) - In which Ash doesn’t leave the library before reading Eiji’s letter.
*
The Greatest Showman
Ongoing:
I’d hold you as the water rushes in (Rated T; multi -chapter, ongoing, Titanic AU) - Phillip Carlyle has lived in Europe for four years, but now it is time to come home. Or, the Barlyle Titanic AU that nobody asked for.
my head’s underwater, but I’m breathing fine (The highest drabbles are Rated M; however, ratings and warnings vary by chapter) - A collection of Barlyle drabbles.
Complete:
hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you (Rated G) - Phillip reflects over how much his life has changed in a year.
forever & always (Rated G) - he barely remembered to slip the ring on Phillip’s finger, both of their hands trembling, before pulling the younger man close.
opposites attract (Rated G) - Phineas is a dog person. Phillip is a cat person. Or, Phineas leaves Phillip alone with the animals for an evening.
all I have to do is dream (Rated T) - He may be a failure of a man. A complete, utter fraud. But, he’ll be damned if his mistakes end up costing Phillip his life.
i will follow you into the dark (Rated T, elements of PTSD/anxiety) - Phillip Carlyle’s father is often the center of his nightmares. But, it is P.T. Barnum that triggers the worst nightmare of them all.
let it be christmas (Rated T; elements of suicidal ideation) - Phillip hasn’t celebrated Christmas since he was eight years old.
illicit affairs (Rated T) - it’s born from just one single glance, but it dies and it dies and it dies, a million little times.
that’s when I could finally breathe (Rated T; elements of rape/non-con) - Phillip Carlyle made front-page headlines when he ran away.
ethereal (Rated T) - Phillip helps Phineas cope in a way that nobody else — not his circus troupe, not even his own daughters — can. They are a team, Phineas and Phillip, in and out of work. If one of them falters, it shows... but the other, eventually, helps pick them back up again. Or, a collection of 26 connecting Barlyle prompts, A-to-Z style.
buonasera (Rated T, non-sexual nudity) - Phineas and Phillip spend a quiet evening at home.
up on the rooftop (Rated T) - Phineas decides to surprise Phillip in the one way that means the most to him.
paper rings (Rated T) - Phineas and Phillip only have each other left.
all’s well that ends well to end up with you (Rated T) - Phillip will never love another man as much as he loves Phineas Taylor Barnum.
please don’t ever become a stranger (whose laugh I could recognize anywhere) (Rated T) - Phillip runs into Phineas at a party after they’ve ended their relationship.
you’re the only one of you (Rated T) - Phillip discovers that Phineas is hurt by bad reviews more than anyone ever realized.
angel eyes (Rated T) - The first thing P.T. Barnum fell in love with were Phillip’s eyes.
you can run with me and I can cut you free (Rated T, domestic/parental abuse) - Phillip wishes that a character in his book was real.
warmth (Rated T, fire & ice AU) - Phineas gets very sick and Phillip fears that he won’t make it.
learning the game (Rated T) - Phineas makes a mistake that could jeopardize his relationship with Phillip.
home (Rated T) - Phillip comes home from a disastrous party to a gift from Phineas.
melt with me (Rated T) - Phillip sleeps in after a late, winters night at the circus. He should have known Phineas couldn’t be trusted alone.
i think i might sink and drown and die (Rated T, major character death) - The day Phineas found Phillip’s body was the day he went insane.
snow globe (Rated T) - P.T. is lonely during the coming winter. Phillip offers him a place of comfort.
brighten up your darkest day (Rated T) - Phineas’s voice is the one thing Phillip clings to after a fire at the circus leaves him in a coma.
as young as we are now (Rated T) - P.T. Barnum has anxieties he's been holding back from Phillip.
runaways running the night (Rated T, the fic in which I chose to project my disabilities onto my comfort character, lol) - In which Phillip Carlyle struggles with accepting who he is, but P.T. Barnum accepts him no matter what.
the photograph (Rated T) - P.T. has one item that was saved from his childhood.
and the walls are closing in (Rated T) - In which P.T. has a grand new idea for the circus, but ends up stuck.
Burn (Rated T; multi-chapter, complete) - Phillip pushes Barnum away after the fire. Barnum struggles with what to do about the secrets of that night.
water drops (Rated M) - Phineas likes to go swimming in the springtime. Finally, Phillip joins him. (fic request)
the world will end in fire (Complete; rated M, but ratings and warnings vary by chapter) - some the world will end in fire, some say in ice. Or, a collection of prompts for the FanFicFeb writing event. Fire & ice AU.
Barlyle Prompts & One-Shots (Rated M, but ratings and warnings vary by chapter) - A collection of Barlyle prompts.
a circus ain’t a love story (Rated M) - Phillip Carlyle has found himself caught up in a world he's dying to get out of, but P.T. Barnum won't let him go.
Indefinite Hiatus:
i walk through flame to feel your warmth (Rated T, fire & ice AU) - He is fire. He is ice. The touch of him burns his hands like snow, but warms his heart like gold.
ashes to ashes (Rated T, major character death) - In which Phillip dies in the fire, and Barnum unknowingly takes in an invisible houseguest.
hang up your coat (Rated T, major character death, suicidal ideation/dark themes) - And the circus came crumbling down.

I tested out my Temur-themed manifest deck on Pats and her Rakdos deck.
And it sorta works? Getting Primordial Mists and Whisperwood Elementals out made it easy to cheat out stuff as long as I had mana. Plus, I always had 2/2 bodies for blocking.
The challenge was getting my Dragon Whisperers out and spitting 4/4 fliers.

YA & School Love in LGBTQIA+ Historical Romances
First off, I’m glad to say that the YA novels of today are teeming with LGBT characters, many of them MCs. That said, this is just a taste of a few that I really enjoyed or by authors you might not be aware of yet. @lgbtqreads is an excellent resource for more exhaustive lists, and also companies like Book Riot.
All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages. Short story anthology of LGBTQIA teenagers throughout history, from across the spectrum. Ed by Sandra Mitchell
- Take a journey through time and genres to discover stories where queer teens live, love and shape the world around them. Seventeen young adult authors across the queer spectrum have come together to create a collection of beautifully written diverse historical fiction for teens. From a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood set in war-torn 1870s Mexico featuring a transgender soldier, to two girls falling in love while mourning the death of Kurt Cobain, forbidden love in a sixteenth-century Spanish convent or an asexual girl discovering her identity amid the 1970s roller-disco scene, All Out tells a diverse range of stories across cultures, time periods and identities, shedding light on an area of history often ignored or forgotten.
Hayden Thorne novels are being reissued. She specializes in YA LGBT romance novels, many with fantasy elements, but all of them well constructed and inventive. I’ve read almost all of her novels in this genre, and several are mentioned elsewhere on this blog. Just, please, check out this amazing author’s work for some very creative takes on some of your favorite tropes, and ideas I’ve never read anywhere else.
A Place for Wolves by Kosoko Jackson
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe meets Code Name Verity in this heartbreaking and poignant historical thriller. (YA!!)
James Mills isn’t sure he can forgive his parents for dragging him away from his life, not to mention his best friend and sister, Anna. He’s never felt so alone. Enter Tomas. Falling for Tomas is unexpected, but sometimes the best things in life are. Then their world splits apart. A war that has been brewing finally bursts forward, filled with violence, pain, and cruelty. James and Tomas can only rely on each other as they decide how far they are willing to go—and who they are willing to become—in order to make it back to their families.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee (Review)
- A young bisexual British lord embarks on an unforgettable Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend/secret crush. An 18th-century romantic adventure for the modern age written by This Monstrous Thing author Mackenzi Lee - Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700s.Henry "Monty" Montague doesn't care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family's estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. So Monty vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty's reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.Witty, dazzling, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
Don't miss Felicity's adventures in The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, the highly anticipated sequel!
Pantomine by Laura Lam (Micah Grey Trilogy Book 1)
- In a land of lost wonders, the past is stirring once more . . .
Gene's life resembles a debutante's dream. Yet she hides a secret that would see her shunned by the nobility. Gene is both male and female. Then she displays unwanted magical abilities - last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Matters escalate further when her parents plan a devastating betrayal, so she flees home, dressed as a boy.
The city beyond contains glowing glass relics from a lost civilization. They call to her, but she wants freedom not mysteries. So, reinvented as 'Micah Grey', Gene joins the circus. As an aerialist, she discovers the joy of flight - but the circus has a dark side. She's also plagued by visions foretelling danger. A storm is howling in from the past, but will she heed its roar?
Ash by Malinda Lo
In the wake of her father's death, Ash is left at the mercy of her cruel stepmother. Consumed with grief, her only joy comes by the light of the dying hearth fire, rereading the fairy tales her mother once told her. In her dreams, someday the fairies will steal her away. When she meets the dark and dangerous fairy Sidhean, she believes that her wish may be granted. The day that Ash meets Kaisa, the King's Huntress, her heart begins to change. Instead of chasing fairies, Ash learns to hunt with Kaisa. Their friendship, as delicate as a new bloom, reawakens Ash's capacity for love--and her desire to live. But Sidhean has already claimed Ash for his own, and she must make a choice between fairy tale dreams and true love. Entrancing and empowering, Ash beautifully unfolds the connections between life and love, and solitude and death, where transformation can come from even the deepest grief.
The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara
- A clever, romantic novel based on the true story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy to sail with the infamous pirates Anne Bonny and Calico Jack—and fell in love with Anne Bonny.
There’s no place for a girl in Mary’s world. Not in the home of her mum, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy granny, where no girl can be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Mary’s livelihood—and her safety—depends on her ability to disguise her gender.
At least, that’s what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate.
The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain, earning herself the chance to join the account and become a pirate alongside Calico Jack and Anne Bonny.
For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captain’s mistress, she risks everything—her childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life.
Breathlessly romantic and brilliantly subversive, The Unbinding of Mary Reade is sure to sweep readers off their feet and make their hearts soar.
Deviant Desire by Jackson Marsh (Just came out March 7th!)
- The Victorian East End lives in fear of the Ripper and his mission to kill rent boys. Silas Hawkins, nineteen and forging a life on the streets could well be the next victim, but when he meets Archer, his life changes forever. Young, attractive and rich, Archer is The Viscount Clearwater, a philanthropist, adventurer and homosexual. When Archer suspects the Ripper is killing to lure him to a confrontation, he risks his reputation and his life to stop the madman's murders. Every man must play his part, including Silas.A mashup of mystery, romance and adventure, Deviant Desire is set in an imaginary London of 1888. The first in an on-going series, it takes the theme of loyalty and friendship in a world where homosexuality is a crime. Secrets must be kept, lovers must be protected, and for Archer and Silas, it marks the start of their biggest adventure - love.
The Prince and The Dressmaker by Jen Wang
- Set in Paris, this graphic novel follows Sebastian, a prince with a secret. By day, Sebastian laments his parents' fervent search for his bride-to-be, but by night, Sebastian transforms into fashion icon Lady Crystallia! Sebastian's best friend and dressmaker, Frances, has kept his secret, but when the secret becomes too hard to keep, she may risk their friendship and Sebastian's trust for her own shot at the spotlight.
A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
This whole series is gold, but here is the information on the first novel...
James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years…rumours that only further pique James’ curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding…especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.
Originally, this list was going to include professors too, but they were already on a list and May/December romances will be on the list for May.
Adding a link for a list of best LGBT fantasy romances in the YA genre, because they have several novels with historical themes that I know friends/fellow readers I know, have enjoyed.

Farseek faceless menace
#Farseek faceless menace for free
#Farseek faceless menace how to
Beast Whisperer is the lower-cost option, but Soul of the Harvest is arguably better despite the additional mana required as it supports cards like Scroll of Fate and Whisperwood Elemental much better. Beast Whisperer ($2.95) and Soul of the Harvest ($0.49)īoth augment the draw power of this deck in a huge way. Obviously that’s the best case, which means it doesn’t always happen, but at its worst it still represents good card selection. I really enjoy activating this with an empty hand and drawing three cards. This morph creature has been seen in other years of Commander precons but is notably absent here. Whisperwood Elemental ($0.49)Ī very powerful engine for generating face-down 2/2s, Whisperwood Elemental also acts as minor wrath protection as long as you have some face up creatures. Copying spells can give this deck access to some effects it lacks, and that’s hugely important with such a focused strategy. If you want to be the one at the table managing mischief, I strongly suggest this friendly Quanar.
#Farseek faceless menace for free
Its job, largely, is to return face up creatures to our hand so we can replay them face down, possibly for free and possibly to draw a card (thanks Kadena!) You can also leave mana open to respond to wrath effects or targeted removal with this friendly cat’s effect. This humble uncommon is actually quite powerful. Whether it’s cards, a good fight, a Scry 2, or just a power/toughness upgrade, getting more value out of something we’re already trying to do is a big deal. Aphetto Runecaster ($0.25), Temur War Shaman ($0.35), Unblinking Bleb ($0.15), and Salt Road Ambushers ($0.25)Īll three of these are here to give us more out of turning things face up. Master of the Veil (sorry Liliana, different Veil) is a less optimistic, lower-cost version. It’s here working its magic again by letting us rebuy on triggers we get from turning things face up. One of my favorite creatures from Legions, Weaver of Lies was a significant component of my 60-card casual morph deck at the time. Weaver of Lies ($0.35) and Master of the Veil ($0.49) Don’t worry–the deck is still the right size. I’ll warn you now that I did want more creatures in this deck, so there will be more cards added here than I cut above. Great Oak Guardian and Apex Altisaur are good creatures, but they’re a bit costly and off-theme. (Do combine Mirrorpool with it, though – thanks to Bennie Smith for the great tweet that tipped me off to this!) Thought Sponge and Voice of Many get outclassed by other card draw engines, including Kadena itself. (Make sure you check out the Commander Newsletter, where I’ve written about Volrath already and either will write about Grismold or already have, depending on when this is published.) Scaretiller is an awesome card in a deck that supports it, which this is not. Grismold, Rayami, and Volrath all deserve their own decks and don’t fit well here. I’m going to start out by cutting some creatures–particularly, ones without morph. Morph is one of my personal favorite mechanics, partially because the friends I made playing in Onslaught block are some of my best friends to this day and partially because it’s just sweet.įor reference, here are all the original decklists for the precons. Since we’ll be working with Kadena, we’ll focus on the morph (and, to an extent, manifest) theme. The idea is that pumping money into Commander decks by buying hyped-up cards isn’t a direct path to victory or fun instead, synergy and theme are the big motivators here. Because of how linear time works, prices and availability may have changed since I wrote this, and if that happens, I apologize for the inconsistency. That way, you can see how I keep things within budget.
#Farseek faceless menace how to
That amount is more of a significant expense for some than others, but the idea is to show you how to improve a deck on a budget.Īs we go through the improvements, I’ll list the prices (from, of course) of the cards I’m adding. As you may recall, the premise is to take the preconstructed decks and spend up to $50 (before tax and shipping) to improve them. This time around, we’ll be focusing on the Faceless Menace deck featuring Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer. The time has come for our final Commander 2019 Budget Precon Upgrade. Other Commander 2019 $50 Budget Upgrades Merciless Rage | Primal Genesis | Mystic Intellect

Top 10 Minecraft Mods For Halloween
Best Of Top 10 Minecraft Mods For Halloween GO News Publication Andre
Werewolves, witches, vampires, covens and creep new mobs and biomes are all present and correct in this list of Halloween mods for Minecraft.
Minecraft has spent years as one of the most beloved games around, and a big part of the reason for that popularity is the freedom players have to customise their experience. Mods can do anything from tiny quality-of-life tweaks to transforming the gameplay experience, completely overhauling the game with a new lease of life if it becomes stale.
With Halloween rapidly appoaching, one fun way to spice up your worlds would be to use mods to add a terrifying twist in honour of the spooky season. Ranging from downright chilling to harmless trick-or-treat fun, here are ten such mods to give your next Minecraft session a spooky spin.
10. Eyes In The Darkness by Gigaherz
This legitimately scary mod only adds one mob to the game – The Eyes. They spawn in darkness, so you’ll see them in caves or outside at night, where they lurk in wait for prey. Once you look at them, it becomes a game of red light, green light – as soon as you look away, they’ll strike.
It’s remarkable how atmospheric this mod manages to be in spite of its simplicity; any encounter with The Eyes is genuinely chilling. Available on Forge all the way up to 1.17.1, Eyes in the Darkness is the perfect minimalist addition to add some scare factor.
9. Halloween LuckyBlocks by HyCraftHD
On the (slightly) less terrifying side of things, Halloween LuckyBlocks adds a variety of Halloween-themed blocks, props, and costumes to let you live out your trick-or-treating dreams on your server with your friends. It adds witch’s broomsticks, clown and scarecrow costumes, candy bags and much more.
Available for Forge up to version 1.16.5, the mod isn’t without some scary elements, though – it also adds a scarier zombie variant, a ghost, and a vampire, so keep one eye open when you’re dressing up for candy!
8. Spooky Biomes by ProxyNeko
Built for popular mod version 1.12.2 on Forge, Spooky Biomes is the explorer’s Halloween mod. It adds four new biomes to the game, each with its own eerie atmosphere. Two of these biomes have a native mob – the Forgotten Warlock – a powerful and frightening enemy to face off against.
The mod also adds new wood types with the four trees native to its biomes, so builders have something to rejoice about too. Spooky Biomes is a well-rounded and fun mod for anyone looking for some spook.
7. Whisperwoods by Itsmeowdev
If your new spooky forests are feeling a little dead, Whisperwoods might be the solution for you. This mod adds a plethora of scary mobs ranging from harmless moths to the petrifying Hidebehind, a silent stalker with a taste for woodsmen. Other additions include a ghost-deer miniboss, cave-dwelling vampire bats, and (mostly) friendly wisps.
Vanilla Minecraft has a few spooky mobs, but Whisperwoods takes it to the next level. The mod has support on Forge up to version 1.16.5, so give it a shot if you’re in the mood to hunt – or be hunted by – some true horrors.
6. Vampirism – Become a Vampire! by Maxanier
Vampirism is a Forge mod with support up to 1.17 and, quite simply, it adds vampires. When one of them bites you, you’ll become one yourself, gaining all the powers that come with it. You’ll grow even stronger as you suck more blood from animals and other players, though your vulnerability to the sun will also increase.
It also adds the vampire biome – home to bloodsucking bats that must be slain for rituals – and vampire hunter NPCs to protect villages. Vampirism is the ideal spooky mod if you’re in the mood for some bloodsucking antics.
5. Howling Moon by Razmenwolf
As the name suggests, Howling Moon is a mod focused on lycanthropy. Get attacked by a werewolf on a full moon, and you’ll become one yourself. From there, you have access to “werewolf stats”, showing how prolific you’ve been in your slaughter. The mod makes sure to give you prey too – hunter NPCs roam the world, and if that’s not enough you can take the fight to them at their Lodge structures.
Another 1.12.2 mod through Forge, Howling Moon is the ultimate werewolf experience. If you’ve ever wanted to (literally) unleash your inner wolf, this is the mod for you.
4. Hunter’s Nightmare by Therebelt
If you’d rather be the one doing the hunting, Hunter’s Nightmare is the mod for you. It also adds werewolves (along with a multitude of other supernatural monsters) but instead of becoming one, you’re tasked with killing them. At your disposal are wolfsbane, flintlock pistols, and of course, silver.
This mod is for version 1.12.2 on Forge, but at the time of writing is also being ported to 1.16.5 on Fabric, so no matter how you play, you should be able to get in on some monster-killing action.
3. Pirates by Spectre0987
While werewolves, skeletons, and vampires get plenty of time in the spotlight at Halloween, ghost pirates are a far more overlooked variant of the undead – though just as spooky. Fortunately, the Pirates mod (for version 1.12.2 on Forge) is here to give them the love they deserve.
The ghost ship structure generates in oceans and is inhabited by entire ghoulish crews to take down, with plenty of loot as a reward. The mod also adds other pirate-y content: telescopes, rum, cannons and much more.
2. Bewitchment by MoriyaShiine
No Halloween list would be complete without the opportunity to join a coven, and that’s exactly what Bewitchment lets you do. You can also become a vampire or werewolf, if that’s more your thing. This mod has a ton of spooky content, ranging from flying broomsticks to occult rituals to scary expansions, brewing and trading.

Commander 2019 New Commanders
Yeehaw new Commander cards! This is one of my favorite times of the year! For today, I’m going to review my thoughts on each of the new Legendary Creatures printed in this crop of Commander decks, and how good I think each of them are. Later, I’ll go through all the other new cards to see which ones have decent applications and which ones are flops. But for now, let’s get started.
I’ll start with Kadena, since this was the first deck previewed. Sultai morphs is a super interesting deck concept, and I love that we get a Tarkir Naga to be the headliner for it. I like the abilities here, though the abilities are such that it’s a pretty obvious build. Which is good, honestly. It’s good to have some generals like this that are easy starting points for new players. The first major upgrades you’re going to want in this deck are cards like Leyline of Anticipation, to make sure you can cast a morph every turn with flash and keep drawing into more gas. It’s a good thing the deck comes with Seedborn Muse, since that’s also going to be a must in the Flash-Morph build for this. This is also probably the best home that Primordial Mist and Whisperwood Elemental will ever find, though it’s a shame Ugin, the Ineffable doesn’t work here.
As a commander, I like Kadena quite a bit. It’s great that (assuming you have a Morph card in hand already), you can play Kadena and immediately put your first Morph down and draw a card, so even if she gets removed, there’s some value already. I doubt she’s competitive, but great for 75% players. I’ll ding her a bit for obviousness, but she’s probably my favorite of the face Commanders.
Jeskai Flashback was not exactly what I was expecting (I was anticipating Grixis), but it does make me happy for a few reasons. First, we need more Jeskai commanders. Second, Jeskai Spellslinger is an archetype that has been woefully underrepresented, despite having so many amazing cards to contribute. Sevinne is pretty cool design space, and there are a few directions to go here. Obviously, the value from his Graveyard ability is awesome, so casting as many spells as possible from the Grave is a necessity. Note that it doesn’t specify Flashback, so Retrace spells work also.
Given that his ability only triggers off the first spell cast from the Graveyard each turn, I don’t think there’s a truly competitive build here, which is a shame. The 75% build that is possible is Flashback/Retrace tribal, and will come together just by upping the quality of cards from the precon. One more off the wall idea is to also make use of his first ability to create some sort of Pariah lock. You’re in the colors to back it up with counters, so it’s not completely unreasonable to consider, though it’s definitely not competitive. All told, I like Sevinne, but he’s not my favorite, of the set or even of his deck. He doesn’t have immediate impact, and only sort of has protection, which keeps him from being amazing. But overall pretty good.
I really like the idea of a Populate deck, and I really like Ghired. Adding Red to the typically Selesnya mechanic makes this a lot more aggro, which is very needed. Ghired himself is pretty cool, because he comes in with a pile of stats. You’ve gotta wait until he can attack to get any real value out of him, though, so I suspect Boots & Greaves will be must-haves for players of this deck. The real reason I like Ghired, though, is because of his hidden potential.
Sure, there are some obvious things you can do like run Advent of the Wurm and go big & stompy. But there are some sneaky combos here as well. First up is Helm of the Host, which is absolutely insane, because the token it makes is non-Legendary, so it can be Populated and not die. So it goes: Create a copy of Ghired, which comes in with a 4/4 Rhino, then swing with both Ghireds to make two more copies of Ghired, each of which comes in with an additional Rhino. It shouldn’t be hard to get an out of control board state pretty quickly at that point. The second combo worth mentioning is to use Heat Shimmer or Twinflame (or similar) to make copies of either Combat Celebrant or Scourge of the Throne, then attack with the copy and Ghired, & Populate for infinite combat steps. So basically, there are options here. And that makes me like this guy.
B/R Madness is a pretty straightforward theme, but there honestly aren’t enough good Madness cards to “win” with. So Anje is very cleverly designed in that she can enable multiple different decks, and as such, she is probably one of the most competitive-viable Commanders of the set. First step, if you do want to go all-in on the Madness build, is to fill your deck with Madness creatures (or build your own with a bunch of Vampires and Falkenrath Gorger), then use Anje & as many wheel effects as you can get your hands on to dump most of your deck into your Graveyard. From there, there are a number of ways to win, with my favorite being a giant Living Death for whatever combo you want.
The other option is to go even faster reanimator, and use tutors to get your hands a Worldgorger Dragon in your grave, plus an Animate Dead or Dance of the Dead and combo off from there. Anje can rummage every time she reenters the Battlefield, so you’ll draw your deck and get infinite mana, which you can use to win with a giant Comet Storm or Torment of Hailfire or whatever your spell of choice is. Overall a very elegant design, but lacking a good 75% build. She will also see play in other decks looking for looters, Vampires, or (gasp!) both.
Now we get to the secondary commanders. Volrath is interesting, and really has nothing to do with the “Morph” theme of the deck, but that’s a pretty narrow theme to begin with. I do like that this new version of Volrath pays homage to his character, with a mechanical link to Phyrexia in his first ability, and his shapeshifting in his second. It’s smart of them to make it usable off any counter, so the range of cards usable in this deck is much greater.
That said, I don’t know exactly what you would do with this. 7 power seems like they want Commander damage to be a thing, so I suppose there’s some options to make him unblockable (Blighted Agent or Invisible Stalker maybe?) and win that way. My personal favorite idea is to make him a copy of Insidious Mist, at which point good luck dealing with him, since he keeps his P/T. There’s a build here somewhere, but unlike some of the others on this list, I don’t see much way to get it beyond 75%, unless you go full Sultai combo shenanigans, in which case why bother with Volrath at all? So, I guess... I kinda like him.
I... really don’t understand Rayami. First, just from the flavor perspective, what is even going on here? He’s a Zendikari Vampire who... has picked up Green and Blue for... reasons? Even though no Zendikari Vampire has ever dabbled in any colors besides Black ever before? So in my head, there’s maybe some connection here to Yarok the Desecrated representing the fate of Bala Ged. Maybe? I’ll just tell myself that’s it and that Rayami is a super in-tune Vampire who’s totally one with the land. Yeah. That’s what I’ll tell myself to make me less angry with this.
Mechanically... I also don’t understand what’s going on here. So, this ability-sharing schtick has been on White (Odric & Concerted Effort), Green (Majestic Myriarch & Animus of Predation), and Black (Soulflayer & Cairn Wanderer). White tends to give it to other creatures, whereas Green & Black add it to themselves. Black also has the Graveyard/Exile element. Aaand Blue has general shapeshifting, so we’ll go with that? But that said, I don’t tend to like Commanders that feel like they have more colors than they really need. This could have been a mono Black card and it would function exactly the same. Also, the fact that its first ability isn’t a “may” trigger makes me a lot less excited, since it shuts down Sultai Graveyard shenanigans, which undermines a huge strength of the wedge. Sure, making a 5/4 Flying Hexproof Indestructible Double Strike Lifelink Vigilance Protection from Everything general sounds fun, but is that really going to happen very often? Probably not. Altogether, I think Rayami is one of the flops of the set, both flavorfully and mechanically. So basically, both my Vorthos & Mel sides are disappointed in this one.
And just like that, they’re better. Elsha is fantastic, across the board. I said I wanted more Jeskai spellslinger support, and Elsha is here to serve that on a fabulous platter. First, just for flavor, I love that we get another Tarkir Djinn, since they’re one of my favorite creature designs of recent years. And that she’s practicing in front of the Mystic Monastery just makes this art perfection.
Mechanically, I love the inclusion of Prowess, hearkening back to the original Khans set mechanic. And adding a Future Sight + Leyline of Anticipation combo for Noncreatures is exactly the type of text I wanted to see here, and perfectly encapsulates the 3 colors. There are tons of builds possible with Elsha, including some that could very well be competitive. It also bears mentioning that Elsha and Kykar both play in the same space, and they each belong in the 99 of the other’s deck.
Anyway, Elsha scales really well as a commander, from super casual to pretty damn powerful, and on top of the perfect flavor that makes her one of my very favorites from the set.
My response to this is summed up in this one GIF:
In all seriousness, now that we’ve done a Legendary Wall, can we just... not do it again for a while? Yes, I’m well aware that with this and Spark Double you can stop all combat. And doesn’t that sound like fun? Pramikon is pillowfort.dec, and that’s about the long and the short of it. Knock yourselves out, but this sounds incredibly un-fun to play against OR pilot, in which case what’s even the point? It’s trolling in deck form. Literally annoyance without substance.
On top of that, it’s basically a Legend with a complete and utter lack of sense of place, or flavor at all for that matter. If you want to build a Walls deck, just run Arcades the Strategist. I promise it’ll be more fun.
I’m going to have such a hard time not calling her Atla Panini, because I am preoccupied with food. I really enjoy this design. She’s flavorful, has a sense of place and purpose that I understand, and is gorgeously illustrated. Mechanically, she functions something like a variant on Mayael of the Anima, but with fewer restrictions on what creature she can hit. Obviously, the flavor jackpot is to run a deck that’s all Dinosaurs, or at least things that can hatch from eggs, I suppose. She’s fun, she’s 75%, all she needs is a sac outlet to get the ball (egg?) rolling towards good times for all.
Can I just say, I love that for the three Wedge/Shard decks, they included at least one character from the namesake? We don’t get enough Alara in our lives, so having an actual Naya Leonin makes me happy. Not quite as happy as having another Jeskai Djinn, but there you go.
Anyhoo, Marisi is designed to own combat and speed the game up while he’s at it. And what’s crazy is you don’t even have to hit with him to get the ball rolling. Any of your creatures will trigger the Goad, and that just seems like crazy fun. He definitely doesn’t seem competitive, but could be fun at casual tables.
Ooooo baby. This is pretty sexy. It’s basically having Tortured Existence (One of the format’s most underrated cards, IMHO) in the Command Zone, and that is pretty sweet. Sure, it doesn’t help you cheat on costs, which would push this to competitive levels, but it allows for some pretty insane value loops. Chainer is a perfectly designed 75% Commander, and I love him for that.
I’ve gotta say, the Madness deck might be the winner, when it comes to new cards. I like all three of the new R/B Commanders in this deck. Greven is clearly designed for Voltron-style Commander Damage wins, but with a unique method of getting there. He swings with literal Hatred, which is beyond fucking cute, so for this deck you’re going to want lots of sacrifice fodder and easy ways to pay life. In a tight build, it should be trivial to take out opponents with one hit, though you’re going to want to make sure you have ways to regain your lost life if you’re going that route. Building this deck seems like a fun puzzle, and I love cards that encourage that.
So that’s it for the primary & secondary Commanders. Next up are the tertiary extra new Commanders printed in each deck, and where better to start than here:
Making new versions of both Greven and Gerrard was already a great idea, but whoever decided they should have the same beautiful stylized art was majorly inspired. Seriously, how fucking gorgeous is that? (And I’m not just talking about Gerrard himself, though full transparency... 100% would do. Also would do Sevinne while we’re on the topic, but that’s neither here nor there.)
Aaaaannnyhooo. This new design for Gerrard is phenomenal. It’s expanding the design space for Red/White, along the same lines as Tiana did from Dominaria, and I am here for it. What’s great about this is that it allows for card advantage, but is still solidly within Red/White, so it doesn’t feel like they’re just adding card draw or something that the colors shouldn’t do. This particular design rewards lots of board wipes, since it allows you to break parity on the otherwise symmetric effects. I’d look to build this deck with lots of board wipes, and lots of value creatures that have good ETB effects, since they’ll all trigger again on re-entry. I doubt there’s a super-competitive build here, but there should be lots of options for both casual and semi-tuned levels, and that makes me very happy.
Okay, if Grismold isn’t from Eldraine, then I’m going to make like Miranda Priestly and be verrrry disappointed. Mechanically, he’s cute. He’s in the general sphere of existing Commanders like Ghave and Slimefoot, but with his own twist. Best bet here is to run lots of token producers and sacrifice outlets, and try to get Grismold up to big/big stats and start haymaking with him. Good news is that these colors have plenty of ways to loop & recur creatures for value, so you will also be able to throw in some typical Golgari shenanigans for alternate paths to victory. Seems great for casual & 75% builders.
Whew, they really went hard on Weatherlight Saga characters didn’t they? Next year, I want new Orim, Hanna, Starke, and Rofellos cards, k?
Tahngarth is pretty sweet. You can have him join in any combat your opponents decide to initiate. I don’t like that he has to be tapped in order for his ability to trigger, but I do like that it’s optional, so you don’t have to send him to his doom if you don’t want to. It does encourage attacks, so that’s good. If I were building a Tahngarth deck, I’d want plenty of ways to Goad in it, since that seems like it would be necessary if your opponents end up being reluctant to attack. I’d also want some good equipment on him, since as-is, it takes him 5 hits to kill someone, so ideally you’d get that power up to 7. The Swords cycle seems really good here, as they’ll power him up and offer some protection, plus make him unblockable for certain opponents. It’s possible he ends up better than I expect, but my guess is he’ll end up on the casual side of 75%. Which is totally fine.
And last, but certainly not least, we come to probably the single most impactful card from the entire set. K’rrik has competitive written all over him, and I expect he’ll be a go-to for Big Black decks going forward. Seriously, he comes down for 4 mana and 6 life, which is easy to accomplish on turn 2 or 3, and then he is crazy cost reduction for all your Black spells from then on. His Lifelink helps recup the loss, and he’ll get big enough to become really threatening pretty quick.
Honestly, I think K’rrik is possibly the best mono-Black commander we’ve seen in years, and he’s also going to be a must-have for any heavy Black deck, and I can definitely see him making waves in even the competitive community.
So that’s that! All the new commanders from Commander 2019. Overall I’m pretty happy with this. There’s a variety of power levels and deck styles to build, and only a few that I actively dislike. Next up, I’ll go over the other new cards from the set, and see which ones might have an impact.
Oh, and if you didn’t get the Miranda Priestly reference earlier, A) Shame on you and B) Here:

Whisperwood Elemental!
Raymond Swanland is one of my favourite Magic artists who started doing art for the game since I returned to it in Time Spiral. I like his art because it has a unique style to it. While Magic art has invariably improved in the last few years, I feel it has come at the cost of a loss of style. There are fewer artists whose work you can pick out by style alone, whereas that was much more the case in early Magic with artists like Richard Kane Ferguson or Drew Tucker.

LGBTQIA Historical Romance Novels w/A Dose or More of Angst
** A Gentleman’s Position by KJ Charles (Book 3 of the Society of Gentleman series) - Lord Richard Vane is the man all his friends depend on, so much so that their secret group is named after him. What they don’t know is that his valet, David Cyprian, is a man that makes all this possible. Richard has depended on Cyprian for years, and both have been pining for one another since the first. But, Richard is adamant against men that abuse their employees, and Cyprian is adamant about his position in life (knowing Richard doesn’t understand). When a threat is made that could destroy everything the group of friends has built, and result in some of them being hanged for sodomy and sedition, only Cyprian can aid them...if he still wants to be there at all.
**** A Private Gentleman by Heidi Cullinan Review - Lord Wes has a stammer, but his chance first meeting with vision impaired courtesan Michael is a sweet thing. One can only write what he wishes to say, while the other struggles to understand what is written. Michael has a horrendous past, however, and Wes is intimately linked to the events. Their single time together brings on flashbacks that render Michael incapable of continuing his profession and haunt his dreams when he does manage to sleep. This has possibly the most nurturing plot line I’ve ever read, in any genre, but things get much worse before they get better.
** Stormhaven by Jordan L Hawk (Book 3 of the Whyborne & Griffin series) Review - Whyborne & Griffin have been a couple since book one, and Whyborne new his partner had horrific nightmares. In this installment, he finally learns just what happened to Griffin when he was put in the asylum, and how men like them are treated by the medical community.
*** A Scot’s Surrender by Lily Maxton (Book 3 of The Townsends series-standalone)
- Robert Townsend does his level best to see that his family his comfortable, and that matters run smoothly when his elder brother is away. Even if it does mean treading lightly around the stoic and handsome Ian Cameron. But, an unexpected arrivals results in accusations of theft and while the two men are busy trying to solve the crime, they are drawn together. One, uncertain and hiding the secret of how he spends his nights. The other, drawn to the heavens, but unwilling to yield to the temptation of his employer’s brother.
*** Memories by Ruby Moone
- Will Marsden is a man on the run from his memories and his past. Steward of Denton Manor was a good position until Captain Dearne, the owner, lost the manor on the turn of a card. When the feckless Dearne is dumped unconscious and near death on his doorstep, Will grudgingly accepts an enormous sum of money to care for him. Dearne regains consciousness but has no memories of how he came to be in the bed of a dark-haired, angry, but gorgeous man or how he came to be so badly injured. When nightmares drive Dearne into Will’s arms every night, the attraction between them explodes. As Dearne battles with lost memories, he is forced to accept the fact that someone in his family wants him dead, and Will is forced to confront his past head on. Will the revelations uncovered tear them apart? (Hint, while Dearne’s story has angst, it’s Will’s past that really adds a heavy dose.)
** The Doctor’s Discretion by EE Ottoman - Review - Doctors William Blackwood and Augustus Hill are hired to catalogue a medical library. The sparks between them fly almost immediately, but Augustus is hiding elements about himself that he knows may cost him his new romance. The pair set out to help a man sent to an asylum, his only offense being that he was assigned female at birth.
**** Captive Prince by CS Pascat (Book One of the Captive Prince series)
- Damen is the heir to his kingdom’s throne, but is sold out by the one person that should treasure him the most. He ends up owned by Prince Laurent, with whom Damen’s country has a tentative peace. Laurent seemingly encompasses all the worst his country has to offer, being manipulative, scheming, and deadly--but he’s also the most beautiful thing Damen has ever seen. When Damen discovers he must work together with Laurent to save both their kingdoms, it leads to more than he might have imagined, but he still finds that reaching freedom is a questionable thing and Laurent does not always play by familiar rules.
*** The Innocents Betrayal by Victoria Sue (Book Two of the Innocents series)
- Will is on the run from his title’s responsibilities, and an arranged marriage. Having no real plan in place, he flees his father’s house, and poses as a servant. Alex barely survived his time fighting Napoleon, and the guilt about his former wife’s death. He’s broken emotionally and physically, with no one in his own household caring. Left to rot in his bedchamber, it takes the arrival of Will to turn things around. But, the pair also have more than their pasts and futures to outrun, as their working together forms the basis of saving the lives of thousands more men in an espionage plot.
*** Gaywyck by Victor Varga - Robert Whyte is a young man wanting to be an artist, a goal family friend hopes to help him achieve by setting him up as librarian in the household of famed art collector Donough Gaylord. Robert is immediately overwhelmed by the handsome Donough, and his employer’s kindness is something Robert cannot resist. But, all is not as it seems, and several attempts are made on Robert’s life--seemingly at the hands of his beloved. The truth is ever more macabre and twisted.
*** Revolutionary Temptation by Sylvia Violet (Book 1 of the Revolutionaries series)
- Captain Jack West has just gone from invalided soldier to spy for the Continental Army. It’s not a job he relishes, but he’s at least still helping his fellows by working against the British in the colonies. He recruits charming and skillful Elias Ashfield, a bookshop owner with other interests on the side that enable him to move about more freely. Jack is cautious about his attraction to Eli, but Eli knows what he wants, and is determined to get it. Even after the two come together, however, Jack struggles with their situation and the wisdom of continuing to meet with the man that he loves. It takes Eli’s life being at risk for him to come around, and even then, it doesn’t all run smoothly (angst and misgivings continue into 2nd novel).
*** A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood Review - James Spencer and William Escher have been sent to the Whisperwood School for Boys. It’s a place where wealthy families can send their hard-to-manage sons, w/out having to pay too dearly for the privilege. James won’t admit why he was sent, and William is quickly revealed to be an addict. It’s only after they come together as a loving couple that James can admit that the cause of his antics stemmed from his parents refusing to believe the depths of depravity in their midst. Amid all this, one of their friends has disappeared, and ghosts begin to haunt the students as they attempt to discover the solution to an old mystery. What they find is far darker than they might have imagined.
Warning: Some novels depict child abuse, murder, dub-con, incest, suicide, drug abuse, patient abuse, and/or other potentially triggering themes.

Per. Fection. Unlike Tumblr mobile formatting.
