Hello everyone! Your Halloween candy goes in a cupboard out of reach of your dog.
Promise me? Do you promise? Do you really promise? Will your children promise too?
I will be sad if I spend this next week cleaning up chocolate filled puke. Please don't make me sad. 🥺

Whim, the Most Wonderful Wizard will give you good luck if you don't let your pets eat candy!!!

Havanese ? 💙
Tumblr media
9/10
Havanese and CKCS have convergently evolved for the niche of Being Your Best Friend and I think that's beautiful. I would attribute it entirely to Enzo and Whim but I loved them so much before that, if I'm being honest. I think they fulfill a similar function to cavaliers but they're a different flavor of lapdog. And like, people deserve that. There will literally never be enough options for little friend dogs. Long live the havanese.
- 1 point for having a coat I could never maintain and being a little too small to be a viable option for me. But also being so cute with their little hippity hopity gate. It's a little upsetting. Forbidden Friend.

It will surprise absolutely no one when I say my favourite breed is the Havanese (and I'll include Havana Silk Dogs too just for funsies).
They're loving, attentive, cuddly, playful, so so clever, and super cute. Dog breed of all time. Little friends designed to love you are so good at it. Also a really convenient size for both travel and apartment living.
Looking forward to getting an intermediate trick title with Whim this year.

I'm going through a rough time in my personal life so I'd like to hear some positivity!
What's your favourite breed? What three things make them your favourite?
Anything dog-related (or even otherwise!) you're looking forward to?

Whim wanted a spa day so she treated herself to a mudbath.
In other news, Havanese, free to a good home.

I'd say due to their small size Havanese can initially be difficult to house-break, but now Whim routinely holds her bladder for my 12 hour shifts.
I have seen a bit of a tendency towards territoriality / resource guarding (food and people especially) since I recently acquired a second dog, but it's been easy to manage and is slowly becoming less of an issue with training.
Separation anxiety can be an issue, especially if you don't go to a breeder who is selecting for confident dogs.
Havanese are very clever dogs that absolutely adore training. Whim has really enjoyed both Rally and Obedience. In my opinion they can succeed in a wide variety of activities and sports. Most of all they just want to spend time with their people and so they thrive off of the connection that training brings, regardless of what you're training them for.
Overall I think Havanese are some of the healthiest of the toy breeds. They're physically sturdier than some smaller / lighter boned dogs. They also aren't prone to BOAS like their shorter-snouted compatriots. When I was a triathlete Whim routinely ran 10-15km a day with me. The issue I've personally dealt with the most is luxating patellas. I'd definitely recommend going to a breeder who does all of the required OFA health testing.
Like all small breeds they can be prone to dental issues. They also require quite a bit of coat maintenance. Therefore counter-conditioning and cooperative care starting at a young age are quite important imo.
Havanese are extremely outgoing and friendly with people. They should range from neutral to positive with dogs. I've known several that tried to befriend cats. They can be quite good with children, and make excellent therapy dogs, so long as an adult is around to supervise. They tolerate being manhandled quite well, if a kid is a bit too enthusiastic, but I'd expect them to eventually enforce a boundary if it was repeatedly violated or they were overly stressed. Agression in the breed is a serious fault. As they age, they typically become more handler-focused and seek out attention from strangers less, but they still enjoy it if it's offered.
Havanese are not a barky breed. If someone is at the door, Whim lets out a single bark to alert me and then goes quiet. Repeated and extended barking has only ever occured while she was over-aroused.
They're excellent apartment dogs, typically being under weight limits landlords might set. They're not prone to destroying items or furniture. As previously mentioned marking/incontinence may be an issue, especially in younger years or immediately after moving to a new location.
They're very cuddly and a joy to live with. I'll be celebrating 12 years with Whim in June. I wake up every day grateful to have her in my life.

Anyone have experience with Havanese doggos?
Far far far in the future, boyf and I want a small Muppet companion dog, and it seems that this breed is more physically hale than other Muppet breeds and with better confidence, and would be a good match for a largely indoor lifestyle. The lavish coat is not an issue, as I can bathe and groom. We intend to train for good manners as well as fun and tricks. We would be going to a reputable breeder to ensure physical soundness and known medical history.
I just want to know if anyone has any experience owning these stupidly adorable seemigly-imaginary creatures. Were yours barky? Friendly? Hard to housebreak?
I'm not a dog person (generally strongly dislike, very much love individually) and am trying to find an agreeable, playful, funny, smartish little dog that I will be more likely to bond with.
Our other Muppet dog options seem to have so many problems, even purebred. This breed has a better reputation, which is appealing.
Thoughts?
