background: i work as an ambulance crewmember for a sort of non-government organisation that isn’t non-profit. this means me n my colleagues may be the kind of people who show up when you’re like, dying or whatever

however, my company is absolutely SHIT and yes i will be handing in my notice soon

in no particular order, here goes:

plenty of people at other similar companies got extra money for working during covid. we didn’t, because we “can’t expect special treatment every time something extraordinary happens”

we should, however, constantly wear our ffp2 masks, even when not with a patient / at a hospital (so even when we’re sitting around at the station with nothing to do). this is in fact illegal according to work law bc you have to have frequent enough breaks. our bosses therefore explained that ActuallyTM, when we’re driving to a call or back from a hospital, we’re not actually working and thus the law doesn’t apply

but fear not! this does not apply to our bosses, who can sit in their joint office and NOT wear a mask at all, because of... secret reasons. and they also don’t have to wear the mask in the building. for secret reasons again

recently, the covid guidelines changed countrywide. my company has decided that they can now order a covid positive person to come to work DESPITE currently being infected in case the personnel situation requires it (spoiler: we are always short staffed so the situation always requires it). this worker is then ASKED to wear a mask. not even required to. ASKED

luckily enough, our station is so big that one can easily avoid an infected coworker... or not! the one common room we have (also the only room with chairs) can only very barely fit everyone who works during weekdays. so assuming every ambulance is in we have less than 30 square meters

... unless you also count the bathroom! it’s very smelly and really kinda gross and there’s a hole in the wall leading to the garage

the heating doesn’t really work either. this is because the heating is shit and also bc the one door leading to the outside doesn’t close properly

this broken door leads to a small outdoorsy corridor which has adjoined to it two shipping containers. those are our changing rooms. every person gets a locker for their private stuff! this locker is slightly bigger than your average microwave. the changing rooms are also freezing. unless someone put the heating on, in which case they’re above 30 degrees celsius

we also have a kitchen. this kitchen contains a fridge about the size of a minifridge at a relatively posh hotel. if everyone brings a tupperware box full of lunch then about half the lunches will have to sit outside the fridge

the luxury coffee machine we’d crowdfunded among us for broke. the bosses took five months to get on to buying a new one. just because

(well. i ASSUME they’ve actually bought it and it will be installed. that’s what the bosses SAY. but i have reason to doubt their work)

we have wifi! about 6 mb/s...

last year we got smoke detectors installed. there were none before that.

the table is perpetually sticky. we do not know why. the chairs are perpetually really grossly discoloured. we do not ask why. the sofa is lumpy. we have accepted this.

there are, depending on the season, rats, mice, roaches, spiders, ants that are just. living there also.

the garage is unheated. meaning when we get to the weekly disinfecting routine that's required for each ambulance, we work with potentially freezing water. this is against work law, but our boss said the garage isn’t our workplace so it doesn’t matter if it’s cold there. the fact that we have to clean the ambulances in the garage, with the doors open due to the fumes from our disinfectant stuff... yeah....

but enough about how shit the building is! more about the people i work with!

there’s kevin, a perpetually sick chronic liar who presumably has münchhausen’s. he’s off sick more than half his working days. also he’s on opiates! he also comes to work while high off marijuana. he has also come to work while off sick and ordered people around

there was that one colleague who threatened to kill another colleague bc she’d been messaged by the first colleague’s boyfriend

same colleague worked while drunk once. there were three people who independently of each other smelled the booze on her breath. boss said he wouldn’t do anything bc we couldn’t prove it

the aforementioned boyfriend was fired after he physically attacked another colleague

one lady was only placed on probation after she’d: not resuscitated a patient who needed it, resuscitated (and thus injured) a patient who did NOT need it (and she did it incorrectly as well), threatened another colleague with violence, ignored the directives preventing the spread of infectious diseases and stole an ambulance

we have on several occasions hired people who didn’t have a driving license. you know, for the “drive ambulance” job

there was a guy who very frequently misused lights and sirens, destroyed important documents and destroyed patients’ health insurance cards after he forgot to give them back to them. he was never fired, just handed in his notice eventually

we have one guy who worked full time until the middle of last year (now only takes on shifts part time) bc he is in his mid 60s. he told the bosses hey, i’m old, i won’t do night shifts. they said okay cool we won’t plan you for any night shifts! but they lied

one girl likes to yell at dementia patients when they don’t immediately do what she wants (bc they can’t. understand. bc they have fucking dementia!!!!) (as in, patients with severe dementia)

there are a handful of people who sometimes just. don’t show up. or are perpetually late. there are no repercussions.

and the crowning achievement: our current vice station boss

company branch boss just decided that this guy would be a good fit. this guy is

racist: likes to be like “oh that name on the pager sounds mediterranean / arabic / smth like that. those people only pretend they have medical problems, let’s get some food before going there”

a sexual predator: approximately every young blonde girl who starts with us ends up reporting some kind of harrassment by him, including being pressed to take his number but also inappropriate touches. he has been reprimanded for this (gently) and we are not allowed to talk about it anymore. he continues his behaviour bc why not!

negligent at his actual job: likes to not check his ambulance at the beginning of the shift or not monitor patients properly

and really shit at his vice station boss duties! doesn’t do the shit that actually needs doing and rather thinks up new fancy ways he can tell all of us how to do our job while not making sure our storage is stocked up on all the things we need and while not getting any of the important paperwork done or not arranging any repairs for whatever shit is broken now etc

and now to company benefits!

if you jump through approximately eight billion hoops, you might get extra financing for your gym membership. this might also just cut out at some point

better check your salary thoroughly! people have gotten as little as zero monies despite working a full month bc of a widdle oopsie whoopsie somewhere!

get pressured to take on extra shifts!

apologies if this is a dumb question and i won't be offended at all if you dont answer/dont know but since you've worked in libraries before i was curious if you knew how to let your library know you're interested in an audiobook they haven't purchased ? i know i used to be able to make requests on overdrive but since the switch to libby i haven't been able to figure it out. i hope youre having a lovely day whether you can help or not and appreciate you taking the time to read all this 💛

sorry for the late reply, i haven't been online much and just saw this! most public libraries will have a form on their website called something like "purchase request" or "suggest a title" that you can use to request things! people often think this is only for books, but most places will let you request audiobooks, DVDs, etc. librarians won't always add the things you request to the collection, and they often can't explain every decision in detail due to volume, so results may vary.

the one thing to be mindful of is that audiobook/ebook licensing can be really weird, and sometimes publishers do make it really difficult or impossible for libraries to license certain items! so if your library doesn't get something you ask for, that sucks and is disappointing, but please don't hesitate to keep sending in requests as you have them! that info is always super helpful for collections folks looking to add things to the library that they think you'll want and use!

“Zenitsu?” Tanjiro blinks. “What are you doing outside in the middle of the night?” Zenitsu doesn’t respond; Tanjiro realizes he must be having a sleepwalking episode. “Come on, let’s get you back to bed,” he says gently, putting a hand on Zenitsu’s arm to guide him back inside. Quicker than Tanjiro can process, Zenitsu grabs his wrist, holding it in an iron grip. He still doesn’t turn to look at him. Tanjiro tries to tug his arm back. Zenitsu’s grip tightens. “Hey,” Tanjiro says, brows furrowed in concern and confusion. “Stop that. Let me go, you’re hurting me.” No response. “Zenitsu. Come on, cut it out. You’re freaking me out.” Finally, Zenitsu speaks. At least, it must be him, because there’s no one else around…but it doesn’t sound like him at all. His voice robotic and almost distorted, nothing like Tanjiro’s ever heard from Zenitsu—or...or even a human—before. But what he says is even stranger. “Sleepwalker Agent 038 has been activated.”

Tanjiro feels his heart rate begin to pick up. He tries to unfurl Zenitsu’s fingers tightened around his wrist. Something is not right. Zenitsu faces Tanjiro. His head is tilted to the side and his eyes are all white. His expression is blank, totally emotionless. Tanjiro finally frees his arm, and he stumbles backwards. “What…what’s going on?” That same strange voice, the one that can’t possibly belong to him: “Target identified. Termination to ensue.” “What?” Tanjiro sputters. Zenitsu begins to walk towards him, face completely void of emotion. “Zenitsu! What are you doing? Snap out of it! What the heck are you talking about?” “Any attempts to reach host will be unsuccessful. The Sleepwalker will remain in control until target has been terminated.” Zenitsu stops walking for a moment. Then the porch lights go out, leaving them lit only by the moon, peeking out through the clouds. Electricity crackles around Zenitsu for a moment, indicating he’s charged up. Funny considering that the entire reason -this- blog exists is because that one only writes positivity for factives who source separate or are distressed by their own identity. I did request specific positivity on your blog. Twice. Both times I was directed to the same old blog post that was super heavily focused on problematic factives that just like hate themselves of something. And not just me, I get asks all the time from people talking about how you seem willing to make decent positivity for every group, but our positivity has to be rooted in self loathing.

Like I really don't mean to seem rude, but what kind of sense does telling me "you're more than likely to request your own" make when you know you direct everyone who mentions a problematic factive back to the same old post that descends into a clear bias for problematic factives that need to source separate for their own mental health.

It is incredibly ironic to only ever mention problematic factives that need or want to source separate, ignore multiple requests of positive for problematic factives that enjoy who they are and don't want it can't have that separation, and then turn around and talk about problematic introjects who love themselves and don't separate are valid.

Your problematic factives post mentions a couple of types, wonderful! It then goes into only shouting out negative experience, I can not explain enough how much it feels like "shoutout to problematic factives but only if they hate themselves because what happened in source was so bad that you can't just love yourself" and it is incredibly frustrating because we're told told by the people around us who pretend to be accepting that the only way we can be accepted isn't changing our names and our interest is and cutting source off completely and if we can't do that it's a hurl of insults. Positivity should be a place to get away from that, not have these stereotypes affirmed.

There's a reason I chose that blog post to reblog as incredibly frustrating as it was considering that it is meant to be for introjects but it *begins* with fictive specific positivity meaning readers will likely have fictive on the mind for the next post and has nothing for factives despite the fact that people do continue to request good factive positivity from you. The reason was because even though that blog was clearly not catered to us at all and there was not a sliver thrown in our direction, it was *all* we've been able to get from you. The best positivity we get from you is the one where you can't even give us a little nod.

This has been a problem on my mind for a long, long time. Go back and look at the difference between your two posts. One of them gives some neutral shout outs (if you are this, if you are that. Nothing attached to that, just if this fact applies) and then straight into the negatives (if you're going to therapy to not be yourself anymore). The other starts with a neutral but has SO many positives, while still giving some attention to the introjects that source separate.

There is such a CLEAR difference in how you handled these things. I'm allowed to point that out. I'm allowed to tell my followers that this post clearly either wasn't made with us in mind or didn't want to mention us specifically for whatever reason, but it's better for many us then the one made specifically for us.

I mean like. If you hadn't made a post for problematic factives I can get where my actions would have been pretty uncalled for, I could just ask. But I did ask. I asked twice, people in my inbox asked, and from what I understand, nothing that was beneficial to me or my askers was ever posted. Nothing that was as accepting and warm feeling at the blog post I reposted was posted. And idk what you think about that but I think that gives me the right to seem upset.

I would love to edit and translate manuscripts all day long, on top of working as a teaching assistant, my side job in the field that also pays me, preparing conference papers for presentation, which often includes translating Latin, Middle Welsh, Old Irish, Early Modern Irish, and Modern Irish myself, even when scholars before me have translated them (to ensure that the nuances are captured), adapting those papers to Powerpoints, arranging accommodations and flights for said conferences, playing Stardew Valley, organizing conferences/conference panels, working on my phd, working on projects that are actually publishable in the field, plotting the next Fomoire invasion of Ireland, as well as my various and assorted commitments to different groups and organizations that I am also doing without pay in order to bolster my CV so that there is a snowball's chance in Hell that I have a shot at employment, while even more senior scholars in the field have to struggle to justify their translation work. It reminds me of an article on the Celtic Students blog that talks about how the overwhelming amount of public outreach in the field, at the moment, is done by Grad Students, yours truly included.

In these digital spaces, students of Celtic Studies (predominantly graduate students) carry the brunt of the public's attention, and work to amend persistent pervasive errors or misunderstandings (such as 'did the Celts really fight naked in battle', 'were the Celts really matriarchal', and 'why did Saint Patrick commit a genocide against the pagans') that have found themselves deeply rooted in public consciousness. These misunderstandings appear to have been perpetuated by the rise of the internet giving the public access to wildly out of date scholarly publications, the Wikipedia articles on medieval Celtic literature being deeply inaccurate, and a small cottage industry of people producing exceptionally inaccurate self-published books (and ebooks) about 'Celtic Mythology' that dominate digital marketplaces such as Amazon and the Kobo storefront. 

Despite this being important work, and entirely legitimate scholarly labor, it can be disheartening when this work is not recognized as legitimate or worthwhile by senior members of the field compared to standard scholarly activities.

ok like i get being mad about the a/c not being fixed as fast as you'd like and the various other legitimate maintenance problems ppl have been dealing with when they shouldn't have to be. but pls don't get mad at the maintenance workers not being able to give you a timeline for a fix because of the ADMIN not having tracking info for a part they need for your a/c repair as if they were the ones who manufactured the part and handle it's transport like babe not only do the guys who come in to do your work likely not handle this shit themselves separate from the admin, but the housing org and the a/c part ppl are seperate businesses, ran by people with limited time/resources/staff and high demand like. The ppl could literally just not have stuff to tell you because THEY weren't given a way to track it themselves by the a/c part seller? You don't always get tracking info, like when a teacher i know had issues with getting a part shipped for an oven issue they were fixing or with some international orders. Did ya think that maybe they aren't purposefully trying to slight you in any way but are just ppl with limited info and resources who ALSO would rather just fix your issue and be done with it like? Be mad about the high cost of living with an administration that isn't as efficient as it should be considering the scope of their work and the high demand, be mad with issues like your a/c or water not working properly considering the price you pay for maintenance and the space itself, but don't get mad at the repair workers for issues outside of their control or make a fuss because of a "problem" that really is just how life goes sometimes, instead of acting like it was meant to be a personal slight just cause it's not the most convenient or what you wanted
