Not What He Seems (ch.1)
(Prefer to read this on AO3?)
(It’s happening folks. The big reveal, four years in the making.)
NotWhat He Seems: Chapter 1
Thomas' heart always beat a little faster when he summoned something, even after several years in this job. It was the thrill of calling a powerful being into this reality with only your wits and some chalk lines as protection.
Beëlzebob was an intermediate-level demon. He took the appearance of every cliché devil ever - hairy black goat legs, a ridiculously buff and gleaming red upper body, large curled horns. The works.
He was also not cooperating at all.
"You are... di̵s̢tra͢c̢te͜d," the demon whispered, his voice echoing back strangely from the corners of the summoning lab. The shadows seemed to thicken.
Thomas kept his face impassive. These were just some special effects, after all. His binding circle was perfect, he didn't need to worry.
"I have outlined our offer in this document. These are the terms you have previously discussed at length with my colleague," he said, reaching out slightly to hand Beëlzebob the carefully rolled up contract. "All should be in order."
The demon unrolled it and took his sweet time reading it through. He would make a good addition to the safe summons list, despite being a bit higher level than their usual choices. This old-fashioned approach, with the written contract and all - it would teach the students to be patient and give them time to focus on the details before shaking on anything.
"Yes," the demon said, dragging a black claw over the parchment. "These terms are acceptable. However, there is one issue."
"Is there?"
A horrible, fanged grin. "The contract must be written in your o̦̰͚w̮̮n̬͇̹̕ blood, mortal."
Maybe it was his experience with grandstanding demons, or Tyrone had been rubbing off on him, but Thomas was not impressed. "That wasn't in the agreement."
"You will rewrite it. Ḩè̲̙͙̩̤r̦e̹̦ ͏͕̥a̝̱̺͟n̘͔d ̛̦̱̲̖n̩͈̪o̰̻͓͓͢w̺͍͎̦.̪̣͇̩́"
"No, I don't think so," Thomas said, mildly. Seriously? All that work was just wasted? Typical. He was not going to use his own blood to write it, sheesh. With all those clauses and addendums the thing was way too long. Not to mention willingly given human blood had power - power that wasn't a part of this offer.
The shadows twisted - the candles flared. "You will, little mortal, or I will step over this boundary and write it myself, straight from your veins."
"This attitude is not convincing me you're a good fit for our list."
"You have summoned me and I will not leave without my deal!" Red-tinged smoke filled the circle, edging over the chalk lines and spreading into the room. It stank of sulphur and decay.
Thomas coughed. Dramatics aside, maybe it was time to get rid of Beëlzebob. Too bad, Hicks would be disappointed to cross off another name on the safe summons list… It had shrunk a lot in the past years. If this kept up their students would soon only get to summon the Organ Duck. If they couldn’t offer a proper practical education they might eventually run out of interested students as well, which was bad news for the survival of the demonology department.
"Whoa, did someone drop a rotten egg in here?"
Tyrone usually didn't barge in during summonings, especially when they were trying to get more demons for the safe summons list, but this time Thomas didn't mind. The open door let in some fresh air and that was very welcome at the moment.
Tyrone entered the room, waving away some of the smoke. "Hey, Hicks mentioned you wanted to have a talk?"
"What? Oh, yeah," Thomas said, distracted. The smoke was dissipating with record speed and Beëlzebob was visible again, staring at Tyrone in abject terror. "I'm a bit busy right now though."
"Do you need any help?" Tyrone offered. His smile was perfectly friendly.
Thomas glanced at Beëlzebob. "As a matter of fact, he was just leaving."
"Yes! Yes indeed," the demon hurried to say. "Just leaving. Right now. I’m going. Big misunderstanding, you know how it is, have to be somewhere else, goodbye now!"
“Thanks buddy," Tyrone said. "Very accommodating of you, leaving without a deal like that. I will remember this. Here, have a snack."
With a snap of his fingers a familiar deep-fried ball appeared, partly wrapped in a festive paper towel.
Beëlzebob caught it with a flinch and popped away without another sound.
“So, what exactly did you want to talk about?”
“Just a second, let me clean up first.” He frowned at Tyrone. “Speaking of cleaning up, what happened to your shirt?”
“What?” Tyrone glanced down at the brown stains on his usually so crisp white shirt, and made a face. “Aw man, seriously?”
“Do I want to know?”
“I bumped into Banerjee on my way here. He was carrying samples. And he didn’t even apologize, can you believe it?”
Banerjee was the Cryptozoology department’s newest hire, working on his doctorate involving – honestly, Thomas had no idea, he just knew it involved a lot of mud. He wasn’t aware of Tyrone’s true identity. The university staff tried to keep that one under wraps. Parents might object to their children coming to a university where Alcor the Dreambender was frequently hanging around.
“He owes me a new shirt.”
Thomas rolled his eyes. “You can literally make it brand new with a thought.”
“He doesn’t know that. It’s about the principle of the thing.”
Shaking his head, Thomas set to work. To his students it often came as a surprise that practical demonology involved a lot of cleaning up. The preparations were extensive, of course, but afterwards someone had to put away the candles and mop up the chalk, blood, and other assorted fluids the demons occasionally left behind. Beëlzebob in particular had left footprints of some kind of sulphurous ooze that he probably shouldn’t handle without gloves…
Safely removing summoning circles was an art, really. It’s not like you could just start scrubbing away with these things – the outer part was usually the binding circle, and you never knew if the demon was still hanging around, invisible, waiting for you to make a mistake. Not that he expected something to happen while Alcor the Dreambender was literally waiting at the door, but proper caution was a good habit to have.
“You know, I could clean this up for you with a snap of my fingers,” Tyrone mused, lounging against the wall while he waited. His shirt held no trace of the brown stains.
“Are you offering?”
“For free?”
Thomas snickered at the almost scandalous look on Tyrone’s face. Put down his cleaning supplies. He had planned to do this differently, but you know what? Now might be as good a time as ever. And it would be fun, wouldn’t it, to put Tyrone off-balance for a moment? “How about a deal then?”
Tyrone perked up.
“You get this room back to its cleaned-up, usable state,” said Thomas, and felt the smile break through on his face. “In return, you get to be my best man.”
To his credit, it didn’t take Tyrone long to realise. “Thomas! You finally popped the question then?”
“Yep. I said I was going to do it soon, this can’t be a surprise –“
“And she said yes?”
“We did talk about it beforehand, you know –“
“Congrats!”
“Thanks,” Thomas grinned. “So, what do you say? Fair warning though, being my best man comes with certain responsibilities. Making sure I’m on time at the wedding and such.”
Organising the stag night as well, technically. Though Thomas suspected Brad already had some thoughts in that direction.
“I’ve been someone’s best man before, I know how it goes,” Tyrone said. “You’ve got yourself a deal, Thomas.”
The room around them shifted, the magical arrays fading away and taking the trailing odour of brimstone with them.
Tyrone’s expression shifted too, as he let go of Thomas’ hand.
“What’s wrong?” Thomas asked.
“Nothing.”
“You seem upset?”
“I am happy for you,” Tyrone said. “It’s just… you’re getting old.”
“Wow, thanks.”
“No, I mean – look at you! Getting married. Maybe kids and a house, soon.”
“I’m not buying a house on a teacher’s salary,” Thomas said. “The rest… who knows? We’ll see how it goes. Is that what’s upsetting you? That I’m growing up?”
Tyrone shrugged awkwardly. He seemed smaller somehow. “You’re going to be very busy with all that – that life stuff. It’s happening already. Everyone is so busy. Your dates with Elisha, Eddy’s got his new job, Brad’s mucking around in his dad’s company - when was the last time we all hung out, just for fun? Not because it was someone’s birthday or anything? It’s been ages since we had a game night.”
That… had been a while, true. “I guess that’s what happens when you get older. There are more demands on your time, you get to juggle more responsibilities.”
“I’m not getting older.”
“Right.” Thomas took a deep breath.  “Listen, so… we’re busy more often. And it’s not like in college, where we all could just hang out all the time. But you’re basically part of the family, Tyrone. Alcor. You’ll always have a place here. And I’m sure the rest of the gang would say the same.”
“Promise?”
“Promise,” Thomas said. And smiled, to lighten the mood. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
“You’d just miss all the amazing deals I make with you.”
“Of course” Thomas said, glad Tyrone was now teasing instead of moping. “I’m clearly only using you for your clout as Alcor. You’ve made my life so much easier.”
Tyrone mimed a gasp. “Sarcasm, Thomas? Ouch.”
“Not entirely sarcasm,” Thomas admitted. “You do make my life easier, sometimes. When you feel like it. For instance, vanishing that sulphurous stuff Beëlzebob left behind, I was not looking forward to handling that. The smell lingered.”
Tyrone suddenly looked way too innocent. “Oh, I didn’t exactly vanish it.”
Oh Stars. “What did you do?”
“Might have put it somewhere. Like, oh, I dunno… Banerjee’s car.”
Thomas facepalmed. Serves him right for making a vague deal like that. “Is it at least safe?”
“Define ‘safe’.”
“Tyrone!”
“Don’t worry, Thomas, I promised not to deliberately harm the university’s students and faculty, remember? He’ll be fine.”
“All this for an accidental stain on your shirt, really?”
Tyrone folded his arms in front of him. “He didn’t apologize.”
Thomas shook his head, exasperated.
Demons. They really knew how to hold grudges.
--------------
The Mindscape was a vast, endless realm where the strong hunted the weak and territories were defined, invaded, and redefined. This was the place where demons lived, and they didn’t like each other any better than they liked humans. The collective noun for a group of demons, as they say, is ‘a carnage’. Teaming up was rare, and more often than not ended in the stronger one destroying the other as soon as their goal was met. That was just the natural order of things.
Even so, sometimes even they needed a neutral place to go. Somewhere deals could be made without worrying about being devoured. This place was the Midway Bar, run by a demon known only as the Bartender, and for the past six years it had attracted a group of regulars.
They took over the table in the corner. Sometimes the group lost a member, occasionally it gained one. They weren’t here to make deals. They were here to drown their misery and sneak away before a stronger demon took advantage of their intoxication to ambush them outside these walls.
Beëlzebob entered the Midway Bar. He went straight to the Bartender, who after a short conversation pointed in the direction of the gloomy table in the corner.
“Get lost,” Flaga the Eagle-winged said, at his approach.
The demon next to her, who mostly looked like a giant fungus with teeth, curled a green tendril around their glass. “Yeah. This is a private party.”
Beëlzebob paused. He was stronger than each of them, he knew. But this was no place for threats. “Apologies for the interruption. May I sit?”
That wasn’t how demons talked to each other, especially not to a bunch of low-levels like them. They shared a suspicious glance. The one across from Flaga, some kind of feathered crocodile hybrid, raised his empty glass meaningfully.
Of course. “Listening can parch the throat so,” Beëlzebob said. “Let me get those refilled for you, and then we̙̮'̥͉̘ll̟̮ ț̳̮a̪̩̗̥l̯̹̹k̰.”

PART 3 OF ITS YOUR FAULT PLS !!!! I LOVE IT EKDBJSHD
Tumblr media
Well since y’all asked so nicely-
——————
Kuroo x reader - it’s your fault (pt. 3) (final)
⚠️warnings - angst
Pronouns - male, he/him
Tumblr media
part 1 can be found here!
part 2 can be found here!
——————
Sports sucks. That’s what Kuroo knew about (y/n), yet he still egged him on to play volleyball with him. He had a choice to say no, which was what younger him was hoping for, yet he still did it in hope of gaining his affection.
All his life he thought he was annoying. All his life he’d been in the mindset of how annoying he was, and how blissful it would’ve been for him to just disappear off the face of the earth.
So when (y/n) suddenly stopped showing up to practice, Kuroo didn’t expect himself to get worried.
He was starting to miss all the clingy touches, or the ‘good morning, Kuroo-kun!’ every single morning practice. He didn’t realize how quiet the walk was to his classes, or to and from home, when (y/n) wasn’t there to fill the noise on random things he found cool or how his day was. He didn’t know how expensive the drink (y/n) religiously bought him from the vending machine was, even though he bought him the drink with a smile plastered on his face like it was nothing.
“Oh, (y/n)? He quit the team.”
Kuroo dropped the volleyball he was holding. He’d gone up to coach nekomata to ask where (y/n) was, and why he wasn’t showing up to practice. But he was regretting asking in the first place. Nekomata gave him a sympathetic look.
Kuroo picked up his volleyball, gave him the best smile he could afford, and walked away. Why was he so devastated? Why did his heart feel like it sunk into his stomach? Why was his chest hurting like that? He should’ve been glad that (y/n) was finally gone.
So why does his heart hurt so much?
————
Kuroo figured he’d stop by his apartment to see what was going on. It’s been weeks, yet he couldn’t find him anywhere in his classrooms, and he nor Kenma could reach him on his phone.
When he walked up the stairs, looking for the ever familiar door to his apartment, he was nervous. For once in his life when going to talk to the boy, he was nervous. It wasn’t a good feeling, he never felt nervous to talk to him before.
When he noticed the door slightly ajar, he clutched the apology basket of sweets in his hand tighter. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to apologize for, though. Maybe for yelling at him, or maybe for something else.
“...hello? (Y-y/n)?” When he opened the door, he was met face to face with construction workers, and a blank apartment. Kuroos heart stopped beating. A man, who Kuroo believes was the apartment owner, looked at Kuroo, to his schools jacket, and down to his basket saying “I’m sorry (y/n) :(“
“Oh? Are you here for that (h/c)-haired kid?” Kuroo nodded vigorously.
“Sorry bud. He moved out a few days ago.” Kuroo couldn’t hide the devastated frown from tugging at his lips. He mumbled a small “sorry” and spedwalked out of the building.
He spammed (y/n’s) phone, probably texting more than he ever did his whole life combined, with “where are you’s” and “hey look I’m sorry, okay? Please answer me’s”
None of them were even read.
Kenma didn’t react well to knowing one of his best friends moved away so suddenly. Unlike Kuroo, (y/n) was good friends with him, practically attached to the hip. When Kuroo told him he couldn’t find (y/n) at his apartment, Kenma clutched his ds harder and glared at the screen like it was it’s fault for making him disappear.
But as much as Kenma blamed the ds, they both knew it was Kuroos fault.
———
Kuroo strived to be a better person. He came to terms with his feelings for (y/n), and how he could never repeat his mistake again.
He grew to love (y/n), and he messed it up so bad.
He’d be sure to never lead anyone on again, minus when he’d lead his team to victory as their new captain. He’d try and hold less grudges, tell someone when he doesn’t like them, as to let them down easy instead of blowing up in their face, and even bought his team snacks and filled up their water bottles during practice.
Kuroo walked around the unknown streets of miyagi, scanning his eyes for a mop of bleached hair. He knew Kenma got distracted on his phone, but this was excessive, even for him.
Eventually, his eyes landed on two bright figures. Kenmas usual bright blond hair, and a tuft of orange next to him.
“Kenma!”
Kenmas head whipped up, and he shut off his phone, but then a flash of (h/c) came into his peripherals. He looked a little further down and locked eyes with someone who made his throat close up.
(Y/n).
He looked older. Not in the way that he looks physically older, but he carried himself with a somewhat mature, grown stance that made Kuroo so a double take. His hair was slightly longer and he was wearing a black team jacket instead of the red Nekoma jacket he used to wear. Shocked (e/c) colored eyes morphed into an expression of pure resentment, making Kuroos shocked happiness short lived. Kenma walked up next to him, about to ask what happened when Kuroo turned his head away, walking with his head down.
Kenma waved bye to Hinata, when his eyes landed on (y/n). He was talking to a silver headed guy, with a distasteful frown directed at Kuroo. He didn’t say anything though, just ducked his head and walked beside his captain.
———
(Y/n) kept his eyes fixed on the ground, as Nekoma and Karasuno stood in a line, facing eachother. Kenma was practically standing in front of him, shocked to the core, but also averting his gaze. Not just because (y/n), but Hinata next to the boy was staring at him with his mouth agape.
Eventually everyone filed into the gym, Hinata stopping Kenma to talk, while taketora eyed him menacingly. (Y/n) side-eyed the little interaction with an unwanted jealousy. He wanted to talk to Kenma, he WAS his childhood and best friend. But it soon dissipated when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
That jealousy turned into hatred.
“Can we talk, (y/n)?”
(Y/n) slapped Kuroos hand away and stepped past him, pushing him back slightly with his shoulder.
“Don’t call me that. You have no right. It’s
(L/n).”
Kuroo watched as (y/n) stepped into the gym, his lips pressed into a fine line.
—————
(Y/n) sat on a bench in the corner with an obviously closed off aura, watching as people set up the net or the players from both schools talked to eachother. He walked as Kuroo shook hands with Daichi, not noticing the mop of bleached hair sit himself next to him. (Y/n) flinched when he felt something brush his shoulder.
He whipped his head around to find Kenma, sitting right next to him, but looking straight in front of him. He said nothing, and fiddled with his fingers. Guess he didn’t change, even after a new school year.
(Y/n) relaxed a bit and went back to stalking his team and old teammates with a somewhat less intimidating aura. They sat in heavy silence for what seemed like forever, until (y/n) coughed into his Karasuno jacket.
“S-so how you been Ke-“
“So you’re just not gonna tell me why you left?”
Kenma was looking straight at (y/n), with his normal, neutral gaze. It looked like his normal face, but (y/n) knew how hurt he was. He understood, though. He would be hurt too if his best friend moved without saying goodbye.
“I’m...I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
More silence consumed them. Sounds of sneakers squeaking and the rustle of the net being hung up seemed to vanish under the cloud of quiet sheltering them. Kenma stood up.
“I’m not mad. But I know why you left. And I’m not saying it’s a stupid reason, but you should talk to him.”
Kenma walked away without another word, leaving (y/n) to trail his eyes over to his old teammate, now captain. The frown that summoned up on his face came naturally, despite taking Kenmas words to heart.
He also stood up, brushing himself off and turning his cheery attitude back on. Why play a game with a frown when you’re about to destroy your old team?
—————
(Y/n) wasn’t mad he lost. He was actually quite satisfied with ticking off some of his old teammates by receiving spikes or feints no one saw coming. He sort of felt like an inside man. A spy even. It wasn’t enough to secure a win, but (y/n) never really cared for that.
Everyone was bidding their new friends goodbye, or just idly standing by. He promised Kenma to unblock his number, but only if they never talked about Kuroo again. (Y/n) knew he was being petty, but if it meant never talking to that piece of shit again, so be it-
“Stop ignoring me.”
Speak of the fucking devil. (Y/n) didn’t turn around, choosing to clutch the edge of his black jacket instead.
“Then stop trying to fix a friendship that never existed, Kuroo.”
“Oi!” Kuroo grabbed onto (y/n’s) shoulder harshly, pulling him back and making him stumble a little. (Y/n) pried and clawed at Kuroos iron hard grip. As much as he hated to admit it, he missed Kuroos touch, a lot.
“Can we please have a civilized fucking conversation? I’m fuckin begging you here!”
“Stop fucking cursing and let go of me you fuckass scheming bitch!”
(Y/n) swung at Kuroos head, but avertedly missed. He wasn’t sure if he missed on purpose, or if Kuroo ducked. Kuroo grabbed onto (y/n’s) waist, earning a choked squeak, and hauled him over his shoulder. Kuroo looked for a secluded area, ignoring the fists digging repeatedly into his back and the confused stares he got passing by his team and (y/n’s) teammates.
Kuroo practically threw (y/n) off his back, him stumbling down and hitting the back of a wall a bit harshly, and trapped him between his body and the wall. Both of his hands were on either side of (y/n’s) head, and his legs were long enough to trap him in if he tried to escape.
(Y/n) shrunk back into the wall ever so slightly, but kept the scowl present on his face. Kuroo pursed his lips and sighed.
“(Y/n)-“
“Let me go. I don’t wanna tal-“
“GODDAMNIT (Y/N) IM BUSTING MY BALLS HERE TO TELL YOU THAT IM SORRY!” Kuroo slammed his hands against the wall again, earning a surprised flinch from the smaller boy. “FUCKING LISTEN TO ME! PLEASE!”
Kuroos eyes softened a bit when he finally met eyes with (y/n’s) petrified form, cowering against the wall with his arms tucked in shakily. (Y/n) was quick to push past Kuroo though, diving past him and turning around, free from the wall.
“You see-this is what I fucking hate about you! You act so slick and perfect to the point where you lead people on to think they mean something important to you! I wanted to be a writer, Kuroo! I gave that up to spend my time bouncing a fucking volleyball around with you, and what did I get?! Nothing! I only did it for your stupid friendship, yet I didn’t even get that!”
(Y/n) practically had steam rolling out up his ears, and his words dripped with pure hatred with each retort. Kuroo opened his mouth to speak, but (y/n) beat him to it.
“So if you really want to apologize, give me back the blood sweat and tears I wasted on this stupid volleyball shit!”
(Y/n) punched at Kuroos chest with trembling hands. He kept punching and hitting Kuroo until Kuroo gently grabbed his wrists and pulled him into a hug. Kuroo felt him balling his fists into his back, trying to push him away, but he knew he was stronger. (Y/n’s) mouth was muffled by the cloth of Kuroos shirt, yet he still kicked and screamed at the top of his lungs.
“LET ME GO! I WANT MY CHILDHOOD BACK! I WANT ALL THE YEARS I COULD’VE BEEN WRITING OR LITERALLY BE DOING SOMETHING I ACTUALLY FUCKING LIKE BACK! ITS YOUR FAULT! ITS YOUR FAULT THAT MY ARMS HURT EVERYDAY! ITS YOUR FAULT I GAVE UP ON WRITING! ITS YOUR FAULT! I HATE YOU! I HATE VOLLEYBALL! I FUCKING HATE YOU! I hate you! I-I hate...I....”
Yelling turned into incoherent sobs as (y/n’s) punches died out into love taps. Kuroo said nothing, rubbing circles onto (y/n’s) back, who finally gave up and weakly wrapped his arms around Kuroos waist. He stained Kuroo with his salty tears, choking out half assed “let me go”s in between hics and sobs like a broken record.
They stood like that in comfortable silence, Kuroo combing fingers through (y/n’s) hair while the smaller boys sobs turned into occasional sniffles. Kuroo rocked gently from side to side, attempting to calm him down until he was ready to talk.
“I just wanted to be your friend, stupid Kuroo...” his words were barely understandable through the cracks and sniffles of his voice-also being muffled by Kuroos chest-but the taller boy heard every word as clear as day. He rested his chin on top of (y/n’s) head, looking off to the side.
“Sorry. If it means anything, I was stupid enough to hold a childhood grudge against you. You did nothing wrong. I just...i was dumb and disliked you because I thought you were lazy and annoying even though you were anything but that and...yeah. Sorry.”
Kuroo pulled away from the hug, the cold air hitting (y/n) like a truck. He silently whined at the loss of contact, wiping away stray tears with his team jacket. Kuroo awkwardly held his hands behind his back, his tongue suddenly feeling too big to fit comfortably in his mouth.
“...I’m sorry too.”
(Y/n) averted his gaze, his eyes half lidded and puffy from crying. Kuroo looked at (y/n) with a blank expression.
“Why?”
“For um...being annoying or something. And like...bitching a lot. I’m sorr-.”
Kuroo grabbed hold of (y/n’s) shoulders and shook him violently. “Don’t apologize! You don’t have anything to be sorry for! It’s my fault! Let me take the blame!”
“God shut up you’re gonna make me cry again.”
“...sorry.”
Kuroo looked like a kicked puppy, which made (y/n) burst into a fit of laughter. Kuroos ears perked up as he was graced with the sight of (y/n) wiping happy tears off his face and clutching his stomach. It was a beautiful sight, so beautiful that it made Kuroos chest tighten.
Chuckles died out into snickers as (y/n) huffed and leaned against the wall.
“So-what are we? Friends?”
Kuroo hesitantly nodded, watching (y/n’s) face intently for any sign of protest. When (y/n) broke out into a smile, Kuroo felt like he was on cloud nine. Like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders after so long. He felt like he was flying.
“We should probably head back. I gotta go back to my schoo-“
“Yeah. Yeah that’s probably..smart...”
It was kind of bittersweet knowing you had to say goodbye to someone you just got your hands back on, but after (y/n) unblocked his number right infront of him before enveloping him in a hug, he supposed it was alright.
“Bye~! call me~” (y/n) mouthed out, stepping onto the bus. People started asking him if he was crying, or what that meltdown was about, but he just shrugged and put some earbuds in with a reserved smile.
Sports sucks. That’s the mindset (y/n) has, and probably will have forever.
But not when I’m with you.
——————
Epilogue:
“(Y/n)!” Kuroo ran up behind the boy and picked him up, twirling him around before setting him down. Tsukishima visibly gagged while Yamaguchi snickered behind him, stepping off the bus and preparing for the training camp.
“Yo! What’s up! God I missed you and your stupid hair.”
“I missed you too~”
...
“So...are we-“
“Yeah, that’s what we said on video chat right? I mean-if you meant it and all.”
“I DID!” Kuroo picked his new boyfriend up, this time placing a chaste kiss on the bridge of his nose.
“And god I love you so much.”

Unexpected [1/8]
Pairing: Dabi x reader, Hawks x reader, Touya x reader
Fluff, angst, AU
Word count: 3.5K
A/N: Welcome to my second series「UNEXPECTED」! Hopefully, I will update this series every Monday and maybe upload a oneshot on Friday???? I hope you enjoy this series as much as you did 「HOME」and let me know if you want to be added to the tag list!
Summary: Being quirkless wasn’t so bad. Especially when you had two badass best friends that had amazing quriks to make up for it. That is until one of them breaks your heart by disappearing in thin air. And the other breaks your heart by wanting to focus on his hero work. After coming back to Japan after studying abroad for 5 years, you were in for a whirlwind of surprises.
[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Nothing stays the same forever. No matter how much you wished it was, no matter how happy you were, things were bound to change. Most of the time for good, but on rare occasions for worse. Yet, you didn’t know that when you met them.
Keigo was always the outgoing one of the group. Always the one who says whats on his mind and jumps into action when he sees something wrong. He always cracked jokes and made everyone smile even when he wasn’t trying. You guess you could say he was pretty popular, especially with the ladies.
Touya was the opposite. A shy kid, often left out of group activities. He was someone who you wouldn’t expect to be friends with but once you were, he would treasure you like ruby that was hidden away for thousands of years. He was shy but that didn’t stop him from having fun or making friends. He liked to watch from afar and enjoyed watching others have fun. Even though Touya was a shy kid, he still had friends.
That’s where you come in. You were his first ever friend. You might not have been popular but you were friendly with anyone you came into contact with and tried to make friends with everyone, regardless of character. A red head with sapphire blue eyes caught your eye. While all the other children were playing with each other, he was standing by himself, eyes darting to different groups of people. He looked like he wanted to join but decided to keep to himself. You weren’t having that. No way were you going let someone be alone during playtime. So you took a deep breath and strutted right towards him. But it looks like you weren’t the only who wanted to make a change. A boy with golden blonde hair and an impressive set of red wings was also making his way towards the same boy. And the rest was history really.
You would never regret that day at all. Because you met two people who were going to be by your side forever. Takami Keigo. Todoroki Touya. The three of you would do everything together. Spend free period together. Eat lunch together. Walk to and from school. Hang out after school. There was never a moment where you three weren’t seen together. And you were the perfect trio. Keigo, the loud, pretty boy who brings attention to him wherever he goes. Touya, the shy, handsome one who tags along to anything and everything. Then theres you, the one who is a good combination of both of their personalities. The one who helps keep these two idiots in check.
Even though you guys were the best of friends, there was one secret that you were holding. You might have a small, itsy-bitsy, very minor secret crush on Todoroki Touya. He might not talk much or show much emotion but when he does, it’s the most sincere reaction. When he smiles, his eyes completely disappear and he is rolling over laughing. You can’t help but smile whenever he does. It’s like you accomplished this big mission to make him smile. You and Keigo could be arguing all day long but Touya would step in to finally stop the fight with a few words a wisdom. Did you mention that Touya acted way more mature for his age? The one thing Touya does that just makes your heart go doki-doki is when he tries to cheer you up after lots of teasing from Keigo. You would be puffing your cheeks at Keigo because was laughing at you. Right before you were about to explode from frustration, Touya would come to pat you on the head to cool you down. But his pat on the head was definitely something else. He would pat from the top of your head all the way down to the back of your neck twice before always tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. This little action never failed to make your heart flutter.
It was another day of walking home from school, of course arguing with the one and only Takami Keigo. You and him were walking a little ahead, leaving Touya to walk behind you guys as he watches you two bicker as usual. This time, you were arguing about who likes Touya more.
“Of course its me, you idiot!” you insult Keigo, pointing a finger at him. He slaps it away and points a finger right back at you.
“You’re the idiot! I was the one to talk to him first. So that means me, Takami Keigo, likes him more. And I bet he likes me more too,” Keigo smirked at your disbelief face.
“Noooo, he likes me more!” you tried to argue. Only one way to find out the answer. You both look behind you at Touya who stops in his track. He glances between the two of you and looks back down again.
“Which one is it, Touya? Me or this loser here,” Keigo snickered, pointing to you. This time, you slapped his hand away and awaited Touya’s answer. Your heart started racing and your palms were starting to get sweaty. You wanted to act like you didn’t care but secretly, you wanted your name to be called out. A blush appeared on Touya’s cheeks as he looked back up at the two of you.
“(y/n), of course,” he mumbled. A cheer ruptured through your veins while Keigo is drowning in defeat. He grasped onto Touya’s shoulders, shaking them and asking why he wasn’t the favorite. “(y/n)’s a girl, of course I’m going to like her more,” he shyly said. That just made Keigo groan even more. You couldn’t have been happier. Touya said your name. And he didn’t even hesitate! That was for sure a win.
All three of you stopped at a street that split into two directions. This is where you usually split up and continue to head home. Keigo’s home is in the left direction while you and Touya’s place is in the right direction. Keigo parted ways with you, leaving you alone with Touya. Walks home were quiet but a pleasant quiet. You could take quick peeks at him and he would never say anything. Did he know you were looking at him? Maybe. But he never said anything to stop you so you’re just going to assume that he doesn’t know.
Touya’s house arrived first, leaving you to walk home by yourself. There would be times when Touya would skip his house and walk you all the way home but today was a little different. When you arrived at Touya’s, his father was already there waiting for him. It was no secret who his father was: the number 2 hero, Endeavor. He was waiting by the gate in his regular clothing but he was still as intimidating as ever. Touya physically shrunk at the sight of his father, quickly saying his goodbye to you and running inside.
“Oh, bye Touya…” you barely managed to say. He ran past his father, head down. Endeavor gave you a look before also going inside, sending chills down your spine.
“Scary…: you mumbled to yourself, turning in the direction of your house. You occasionally looked back to see if Touya would appear again but he didn’t.
Ever since then, Touya was getting more and more distant. He wouldn’t walk to and from school with you guys anymore. He would either leave really early or really late, you guys missing him each time. He would be missing during free period or lunch. Even when you guys were hanging out with each other, he wouldn’t talk much or be his usual self. You were started to get worried about him. But you didn’t say anything because you thought you were imagining it. It started to get serious though when he would come to school with bandages on his arms.
“Touya,” you called his name, going up to him during break. “Are you okay?” you asked, touching his arm that was bandaged. Touya jumped and got up from his chair. You jumped in response, shocked by his reaction.
“Don’t touch me,” he snapped at you, pulling his arm away from your grasp. Keigo immediately jumped in between you two, trying to protect you and glaring at his other friend.
“She just asked if you were okay,” Keigo tried to calm the situation. Touya just looked away angrily. That seemed to push Keigo’s buttons. “Oi, why are you acting like that? We are just worried about you!”
“Well I don’t need you to worry about me! Just… Just leave me alone!” Touya yells and storms out of the classroom. You were left baffled and confused. You were just trying to be a good friend but he exploded in your face. Did you do or say something wrong? Keigo was just as confused but more mad. His wings could be seen shaking as he was trying to suppress his anger and control his wings from spreading wide.
Touya got more and more distant until one day, he stopped coming to school. Something was really wrong. You felt a great sense of uneasiness and it wouldn’t go away no matter what you did. Days passed. Weeks passed and Touya was still no where to be found. Since his disappearance, you would stop by Touya’s house every day after school. You thought maybe, just maybe, Touya was just at home and that you would get a glimpse of him somewhere. But you were met with disappointment each time. You would do that every day until you got the news. The worst news of your life. Touya passed away.
Touya’s death was hard to get over. When you heard of the news, you were completely devastated. A crying mess. Your heart tightened with even the smallest thought of him and there was an endless amount of tears running down your face. You felt guilty everyday following his death. You could have done something about it. You should have asked if he was okay earlier on. You should have persisted in trying to help him. You should have been a better friend. You didn’t even get a chance to tell him how you felt.
Keigo was there for you every step of the way. He was equally as devasted with the news but was better at hiding it. He felt an overwhelming amount of sadness enter his heart when he saw you bending over, crying at his picture at the funeral. Keigo kneeled beside you, holding your shoulders in a side hug, half of his red wings moved to cover your body in comfort. You leaned into him, crying into his chest.
“Keigo,” you croaked out. Your voice was hoarse from crying nonstop and you barely got it out of you. Keigo looked down at you with love and concern in his eyes. “Let’s make a promise. To not leave each other ever. I don’t know what I would do if you left my life too,” you barely managed to get out that last sentence because it was too devastating to think about. You started to cry again and he hugged you even tighter.
“I promise. We’ll get through this together,” he promised, resting his chin on the top of your head.
And he kept his promise. You two were stuck together by the hip. It was you guys against the world. He never abandoned you and you never abandoned him. You continued to do everything together. After school classes. Free time. Applying to the same school. Commuting together. The only rule you kept together was to never bring up Touya. His memory was too sad and would always result in depressive episodes. But he was always in the back of your mind. Keigo knew that and would constantly try to get your mind off him by distracting you with things you liked. That would range from bringing you flowers, taking you to your favorite arcade or watching your favorite movie at home. The more time you spent together, the more you got closer, and the more feelings started to grow. Eventually, Keigo asked you out during your first year of high school together. It definitely came as a surprise but you couldn’t have been happier. And then for the first time, Touya never returned to your memory.
You two were happy. And it was the happiest you’ve been in a long time. Keigo was so sweet to you. He only had eyes for you since the beginning. Ever since elementary school where you two first met. He was determined to make you his but after all those events that happened, he wasn’t going to rush things. Keigo knew that you only had eyes for Touya and when he died, he was still on your mind. It was going to take time for you to get over him, he knew that. And when you were ready, he would be there to love and protect you from anything and everything.
But everything started to change when your third year rolled around. It was time to think about college and life after high school. You had started to think about options that were close to your home but you really wanted to go abroad. You had always dreamed of studying abroad and if there was a time to do it, it would be for college. You really didn’t want to pass up the chance, but you wanted to talk to Keigo about it first. Walking down the hallway with all your college options in hand, you were on a hunt to find your boyfriend.
You found him talking with a group of girls in the hallway. But you got a strange feeling. One girl was getting way too close for comfort to your boyfriend. She was fake laughing at everything he said, touching him at every chance she got and stood close enough where her chest was touching his arm. You went to him and cleared your throat, grabbing everyone’s attention. The girl that was all over Keigo let go of his arm and backed away while giving you a dirty look. But you ignored her. Instead, you put your attention on Keigo.
“Can we talk?” you asked, gently pulling on his sleeve. He look down and then back at the group of girls.
“Uh, I’m kind of busy right now,” he said. You cocked your eyebrow. That wasn’t the usual response that you would get.
“Well, it’s kind of important,” you inform him, lifting up the college options in your hand. One pamphlet caught his attention. He took that one out from the pile and started going through it.
“America, huh? You want to study abroad?” he questions looking disinterested.
“I was just thinking about it. You know I really want to-”
“You should go,” Keigo interrupts you, slamming the pamphlet together and handing it back to you. You looked at him in disbelief.
“Well I was hoping we could talk about it first,” you say, a bit angry and annoyed at his actions towards you.
“And I told you that I was busy. Later,” he patted the top of my head and turned back to the group of girls. “Anyway, where was I ladies?” and the group burst into a fit of giggles. You couldn’t help but stay frozen in your spot. Did you really just get dissed like that? From your own boyfriend? You let out a scoff and walked away. There was no point in standing there, looking like an idiot. You’ll definitely need a talk later. Keigo’s smile falters and he hears you walking away. His heart clenches and he wants to run after you so bad but he couldn’t. He had to do this.
You were itching in your seat. You leg was vibrating under the table. Your eyes glued to the clock. Could time go any slower? Finally, the last bell of the day rang and you sprung out of your seat to walk next door to Keigo’s class. He was already packing up when you approached him.
“What was that all about?” you asked, crossing your arms together. He didn’t look up. He didn’t acknowledge you. He just continued to pack his stuff.
“What are you talking about?” he asks right back.
“Earlier today. You brushed me off like I was some nobody. I wanted to talk to you about something important and you made me feel like you didn’t care,” you confessed, pouring out all your feelings to him. He stopped packing his stuff and straightened his back, letting out a big sigh.
“Maybe I don’t.”
“What?” Did you hear that correctly? You hope your ears were just playing tricks on you. Keigo turns to you with hands in his pockets. His face was expressionless.
“Maybe I don’t care.”
“What are you talking about? Why are you saying that?” you started to raise your voice, tears were on the brink of your eyes. Your boyfriend let out another sigh and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I’m just trying to tell you how I’m feeling. It doesn’t matter to me what college you go to. You can stay here in Japan or move across the world to the States. But I’m not going to college or chase after you if you go.” He said. Your heart was breaking with each word and it was clear in your face that you were hurting. Keigo sensed your heartbreak from miles away but he continued. “Come on, why the sad look. You knew that this was coming. You knew after high school I was going to focus on becoming a hero. And not just any hero. One of the best in the nation. I don’t have time to be fooling around in college or chasing after you.”
“Is that why you’ve been so distant lately?” you asked, eyes glued to the floor. You didn’t want to believe that he was being distant. That he was drifting away from you. It brought back too many bad memories. You started to feel something tight in your chest and a heavy weight was being pushed on you. It was starting to get harder to breath but you tried your hardest to keep your composure.
“Come on (y/n). Don’t act like you didn’t know. This was never going to work out. You’re quirkless and I’m going to become a top hero. The equation doesn’t add up.” God you were beyond furious, hurt, upset, baffled, shocked. You were feeling so many emotions at the moment that you didn’t even know how to express it.
“You promised,” you barely let out a whisper but that seemed to cause a reaction out of Keigo. But it disappeared as soon as it came.
“We were kids,” he responded. You wiped away the tears that you didn’t know where streaming down your face. You sniffled and just nodded your head. You got the picture now. You understood. There was no point in trying to fight him or scream at him. Quite honestly, you couldn’t process what was happening because it was all too sudden. This all happened out of nowhere. And you were feeling numb.
“I guess I will go study abroad. Thanks. Good talk.” You say before turning and walking away.
All that was 5 years ago. You haven’t seen or talked to him since. You went to study abroad in the States for your whole 4 years of college. And as much as you loved it there, you loved Japan more. It’s been a hot second since you been on Japan grounds but it felt good to be back. Even more exciting, you were on your way to your new job as a teacher.
You didn’t have a quirk so you weren’t very useful in most situations growing up. But becoming a teacher was like giving back to the community and being useful to others that are specific to them. Thankfully, you were a quirkless teacher teaching at a school full of quirkless students. They still need an education afterall, and need to learn how to fit in society without a quirk.
You were taking your time getting to the school. You wanted to take this time to take in the city atmosphere and the air and basically let it all in. Everything looked the same. The streets. The people. The shops. The villains?
A scream could be hear and you whipped your head in that direction. A villain took to the streets, a huge bag of money in his hands. You started to panic and searched your surroundings. Where there no pro-heroes nearby? Looking back at the villain who was speedily coming closer to you, you caught sight at the scene behind him. Part of a building was destroyed, leaving glass shards everywhere. The villain, big as he was, started throwing cars and large objects out of the way, hitting the other buildings around him. One large object came dangerous above your head, hitting the building behind you. You looked up to see large, sharp glass coming straight at you. Bracing yourself, you prepared to get hit any minute now. But it never came. You opened your eyes slowly. You were being embraced by someone. Looking up to see who had saved you, your breath got caught in your throat.
Golden blond locks of hair. Sharp, fierce, yellow eyes. Majestic, red wings.
Takami Keigo saved your life.

also not sure if you guys prefer shorter HCs? let me know, arigato

Nakahara Chuuya

➭ you try to bring him outdoors because he just looks super bored. plus, he keeps trying to raid the wine cabinet and you are just too tired to keep an eye on him all day. he is physically a child after all, who knows what’d happen if he downed a whole bottle of wine?
➭ makes you bring him to the arcade and forces you to play with him, laughing at you all the way as you try to hit the right dance notes. most of the time is spent poking fun at you instead of actually playing. gets moody when he loses so you let him have the victory for all the games. you give him pats and he actually accepts them.
➭ drags you into a restaurant and orders himself pasta and wine. curses under his breath when the waitress does a double take and says kids don’t get to drink alcohol. you order him some orange juice instead and he sighs in resignation.
➭ “man, being a kid sucks.” - his signature phrase that day. can’t get into R-rated movies, can’t drink alcohol, plus he shrunk and got even shorter. nobody else from the port mafia better see him like this. it’s enough that he knows you’re trying not to call him ‘chibi’. he didn’t need anyone else teasing him about this.
➭ his temper is magnified. super short, hates it when random adults come up to him and talk to him like a baby. he’s at least ten— what’s with all the “he’s such a cutie”? also glares at any guy who tries to pick you up thinking you’re a single mother. “she’s not interested, dummy, so scram!” he shouts, face all scrunched up in anger.
➭ sleeps on top of you since he’s so freakishly small now compared to you. he loves how soft you are so hey, at least something good came out of shrinking into a kid.
➭ “i hope i can turn back to normal soon so i can love you right,” he mumbles as he’s half-asleep. such a gentleman even when he’s a kid.
Tumblr media
Osamu Dazai
Tumblr media
➭ cheeky. very, very cheeky. suicidal bastard loves to mess with you, especially outside. the two of you could be riding the subway sitting side by side and he’d randomly touch your chest. your blush and nagging just inspires him to mess with you more.
➭ doesn’t just stop at messing with you though. young dazai loves to mess with others too. you bring him to the ada office to ask for help but then you see dazai at the other side of the room unplugging kunikida’s laptop charger and you know all hell’s gonna break loose when you spot his computer screen going blank.
➭ fully takes advantage of the situation 100%. kids eat free somewhere? he’s getting fed there. free carnival rides? yes yes yes. also, even more of a charmer as a kid. always haggles for free food/items at every store. always wins.
➭ anyone tries to flirt with his belladonna while he’s a kid? no way is he having it. he’s just gonna stomp on their feet and drag you away. he may be in a child’s body now but he can still do some damage in the form of a tantrum.
➭ pesters you to let him play with your hair to get him sleepy. basically the normal things he does daily when he sleeps except since he’s a child now you can actually carry him like a baby and lull him to sleep which he absolutely will ask of you.
➭ “maybe i should stay like this and have my belladonna coddle me more,” he says as he happily remains in your arms like the giant baby he is.
Tumblr media
Atsushi Nakajima
Tumblr media
➭ absolute fluffball. so sweet you cannot believe it. wants to help you out with almost anything. cooking, groceries, you name it, he’ll insist on helping with it. he got scared while you were cooking though, you had a frying pan in your hand and when you lifted up that hand he just yelped and hid behind the counter. you had to assure him you weren’t going to hit him, all the while cursing that orphanage in your head. look how scared they made him—
➭ so much more easily intimidated by anyone and anything. he’s too precious as a kid you almost don’t wanna bring him out to the world. but he rarely ever gets a day off given how hectic things seem to be at the agency so you bring him out anyway. he’s so relaxed and playful when you bring him to the park, asks you to fly kites with him.
➭ easily socialises with the other kids even though he’s never really had friends outside of work, laughing and having one of the most carefree days of his life. you’re just happy watching him, childhood innocence being something he’s been so deprived of. maybe this could make up for it, as minor as it may seem.
➭ now what does he do if he sees some other guy flirting with you? no outrage from him, he just feels the insecurity creeping in somehow and runs back into your lap, hugging you and burying his head in your chest. cue his sigh of relief when you wave the guy off. atsushi is just a ball of sunshine.
➭ he would be the one telling you to sleep, saying how he knows adults need a lot of rest. convinces you to lean your head on his shoulders and he manages to stroke you to sleep. “i wish i met you when i was a kid,” he murmurs as he thinks of your heart of gold.

“Okay so let me get this straight. You have a boyfriend. Your boyfriend is famous. You’re flying to LA with said boyfriend. And you’re staying at his house? Cause he’s 20 and has a fucking house.”
“Uh yeah, that pretty much covers it.”
“Jesus, I move across the country and then you decide to start getting interesting.”
Indy flipped her grilled cheese over in the skillet, and then flipped off the camera, getting an eye roll from Charlie that she felt through the facetime call.
“You gonna be okay on the plane?”
“Don’t wanna talk about it,” she grumbled, trying to push the nagging thoughts from her mind.
“Indiana. You’ve gotta tell him before you get on that plane. If you can even get on the plane that is.”
“I said I don’t want to talk about it. Just drop it, okay?”
Her list of distractions was dwindling as she finished all the work that had been piled on her before fall break, which was really only a long four day weekend. All she had left was an exam that afternoon, and then it would be time to go.
Grayson had insisted that they take Beks advice, take a trip out of the city to somewhere other than Jersey. It had been an interesting conversation to say the least.
“That sounds fun but I can’t.”
“Why not?”
She hesitated. Her usual excuse for getting out of things that made her anxious was simple. School. Too much homework, upcoming exam, blah blah blah. Usually that just earned her an eye roll, maybe an off hand ‘nerd’ comment too, but then the subject would be dropped.
Grayson wouldn’t be swayed that easily; and, she didn’t even have her default option. She scrambled for ideas with her thoughts running wild until he reached across the couch and laid his hand on top of hers.
“Hey, where’d you go?”
“I was thinking about airports.” It wasn’t a lie, but that was only partially the culprit of the knot in her stomach.
“It’s a straight flight to LA, super easy. I’ve done it way too many times, I know my way around.”
She chewed her lip and he squeezed her hand.
“C’mon, you’ll love it. LA is shitty sometimes but it’s amazing too. And you can meet Eden finally, she’s always asking about you. And Adele too. And I can show you the house, the pod studio. We can go surfing if you want. I’ll take you to Monty’s.”
“Gray. I can’t afford it.”
“Like I was gonna make you pay for it,” he laughed, but she stayed still beside him, unable to find the same amusement.
“I don’t want you to spend money on me like that.”
“Money doesn’t mean much to me. Doesn’t mean anything to me really,” he shrugged - she couldn’t imagine what that must feel like. It felt a bit hypocritical, for her to be acting like she struggled with money while she sat in her nice Chelsea apartment. But that money hadn’t come from her own pockets - it came with the price tag of guilt and the threat of it being taken away if her dad felt like it, which kept her and her ever shrinking savings account on edge. Money didn’t seem to be a real concept in the Dolan family however, and she tried to remind herself of that while Gray toyed with her fingers.
He switched to other tactics of persuasion when the silence stretched a bit too long, moving closer and nuzzling into her neck, pressing little kisses to her skin in between murmurs of “please Dee” and “c’mon baby”.
She conceded, gently tugging on his hair to get him to come back to her.
“Fine. But I’m paying you back one day. When I can.”
Grayson knew that wouldn’t be for years, and he liked the idea of her and him that far in the future, so he just nodded and kissed her again.
Charlie stayed on the line while Indy ate and then moved on to finish her packing, throwing in too many outfits for just four days and four nights, but she wasn’t sure what California called for. It took her a good five minutes of digging to find her bathing suits that she hadn’t drug out since the summer, but she eventually added them to the bag as the final touch and got everything ready. Charlie convinced her to take a few pieces of skimpier clothing in case the ‘vibes were right’, which had Indy blushing bright red and eventually making an excuse to get off the phone before she had to get into her sex life any further with her sister.
Her breathing settled for a moment when her phone buzzed, a message from ‘gray 💚  ’.
Plane snacks?
Also does coffee make you shit your pants
Cause I’ll get you some for the ride to the airport if it won’t hurt your tummy on the plane
:)
Leave it to him to put a smile on her face even as her stomach continued to turn. She tried to convince herself it was her exam that had her so worked up, but she knew better.
if 4 years as a barista gave me anything it was immunity in that department
so yes to the coffee pls :)
and just get me whatever you’re getting for snacks please
Gotcha, I’ll swing by and get your bag
Good luck on your exam! Not that you need it
I’ll be waiting outside in the ugly ass truck 💜  I love you
see you soon, I love you too
With that she packed up the last few things, leaving her bag in plain sight before she left for class. She was able to clear her mind enough on her walk, getting herself into ‘school mode’ before she got to the building. The exam went easily, as she expected that it would - it was nice to have subjects like medical terminology that were so cut and dry sometimes. Either you know it, or you don’t, as Nicole used to say. No point in guessing.
Indy didn’t like having to guess.
Which was why she had the airport map pulled up on her phone while she stood on the sidewalk, leaned up against the building as she tried to plan out the best way to get to the terminal that they needed. She’d already done this - three times, actually - but it made her feel better anyways.
She heard the rumble of the engine first, but it only held her ears for a moment. Because then, it was a giggle, and a squeal, and a whispered voice saying “no, that’s them, that has to be them! Who the fuck else would have a truck like that?”
Indiana’s stomach tightened even more somehow at the realization of what was happening. Charlie’s voice rang in her ears - your boyfriend is famous.
They’d never talked about what to do in a situation like this, but she’d seen enough stories about celebrities who hid their relationships to know that ‘undisclosed’ was the default setting. Suddenly very thankful that she’d decided to go with a hoodie that morning, she pulled the fabric up over her hair and dropped her head, keeping her eyes trained upward to watch what Grayson was doing.
She watched the girls go up to the cab and ask for a photo, which Grayson seemed to happily oblige to, though he didn’t get out of the car. He noticed her a moment later and his smile faltered at the realization that she’d been waiting on him. The girls asked him to give their love to Ethan and then went on their way. Indy held back for a few moments, waiting until they were out of sight before she hurried forward and got into the passenger seat.
“You must have finished that exam quick, I figured I’d be waiting on you,” Gray teased, but his voice was a bit tight.
“It was pretty easy, you either know it or you don’t.”
“Right. Well, I wouldn’t have known any of it,” he laughed, eyes still scanning the street - whether for cars or people, she couldn’t tell. “You ready to go?”
No. “Sure.”
The pair had felt the peace of comfortable silence enough in their relationship so far to know when it was absent, and there wasn’t a trace of it to be found. Indy was too caught up in her own mind to react to Grayson’s attempts to engage her, from the hand on her bouncing thigh to the looks he snuck, eyes darting from the busy road for a moment. She kept her coffee in both her hands - drinking it was counterproductive in terms of her nerves most likely, but the warmth of it was comforting enough for her to justify it. Grayson’s mouth got drier with every exit they passed, and he kept his cool until they got to the pay to park lot at the airport and he shifted the truck into park.
“We don’t have to go you know.”
The dejection in his voice was finally enough to pull Indiana out of her own little world. Her eyes came back into focus as she turned to him.
“Gray-”
“If it’s about the money, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I just really wanted to show you LA, cause it’s a big part of me, and I didn’t want you to be stressed about the price of tickets.”
“It’s not the money.”
“Then what is it? Because you’re pissed about something, obviously, and I’d like to be let in on the secret if you don’t mind.”
She shrunk under his harsh tone, unsure of whether she should even say anything. She hated when she got like this, and hated even more that she didn’t even have a hope of control over it, despite it being herself, her own mind causing the issues.
“Planes.”
“What?”
“It’s not you, it’s planes. Airports. Flying in general. I just… I don’t like it.”
“Oh. Well, I mean, I’ve been on plenty of planes, and nothing bad has ever happened while I was on there.” There was an airiness to his tone, as if it was as simple as his own testimony fixing the entire situation.
“That… doesn’t help.” She didn’t even like the thought of him being on a plane, much less the both of them. She practically flinched at the sound of one flying over them.
Grayson’s wheels were turning, slower than he wanted them to as he scrambled for an idea, anything that could make her feel better at the realization that his words had only made it worse.
“Can I have a redo on that?”
She looked up at him - at his sheepish smile and the blush on his cheeks, and the next breath she took in was a tad easier.
“Sure.”
“I’m sorry you’re feeling anxious, what can I do to help?”
His tone was so flat that they just looked at each other and then busted out laughing. Indiana couldn’t remember the last time someone had made her laugh when she felt so terribly. It was almost foreign to her - she felt like she shouldn’t be doing it somehow.
“Sorry, that was - fuck that was formal,” he laughed, rolling his eyes. “What I meant was, whatever you need, I’ll do. You just have to tell me.”
“Uh… not going.”
His hand moved to the gear shift, ready to put it in reverse and leave. She placed hers on top of his, holding on when he moved away.
“Kidding.”
“No you aren’t.”
“Okay, maybe I’m a little serious. But I want to. I want to go, it’s just hard. Having someone with me that I trust helps though.”
His chest swelled a bit at the realization that he was considered one of those people - it was one of the best honors he could imagine being given by somebody that he cared about, probably because it wasn’t something that he gave out easily. He pulled her hand up to his mouth and pressed a kiss to the soft skin.
“I’ll be with you then. You can hold onto me the whole time.”
“You sure about that?”
He frowned immediately at that, reaching his hand over to her thigh, running a thumb over the material of her leggings. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I mean you’re probably gonna have more fans coming up to you and stuff. I figured you didn’t want them like… knowing about me.”
“I never said that,” he countered, squeezing a bit. “I mean if you don’t want to, that’s okay, but I’m okay with it if you are.”
There was a sincerity to his gaze that conveyed what he hadn’t said - an almost plea for her to be okay with it. And so she was, at least enough for her to give him a nod and a quick kiss before stepping out of the truck.
He got to her bags before she could, and he was grateful that he’d only brought a duffle. He managed both bags with one hand and grabbed onto hers with the other as they started through the parking lot.
And he didn’t let go a single time, apart from the security scans and her going to pee after they made it through, in which he waited outside the bathroom for her with his arms crossed. Ethan met up with them at the terminal, buzzing with excitement at the prospect of getting to see Eden for the first time in a month. He was staying an extra week to get some quality time with her, and he was a constant stream of excitement. Grayson kept his attention on Indy though, trying to read her for any signs that things were getting worse. He kept a hand on her bouncing leg, running a thumb back and forth constantly, leaning over and pressing a kiss to her temple every so often.
“I’m gonna go check something really quick, I’ll be right back. Ethan, stay with her okay?”
Ethan didn’t question it. He slid over to replace his brother for a moment as he headed up to the desk at the gate. Despite his bubbly charm, Ethan had a calmer nature to him than Grayson did, no matter how hard he tried to exude the same level headedness. It came effortlessly to his twin it seemed.
“Gingerale helps calm me down on planes. Don’t know why but it does,” he mumbled, scooting a bit closer so his arm was pressed up along hers on the small bars between their seats.
He didn’t seem to need a response, and Indy was grateful. She leaned against him a bit more as a silent thank you that he seemed to accept, and they stayed that way until Grayson returned, switching out places again, wrapping his arm around her shoulder immediately.
“I upgraded us to first class.”
“What? Why!?” She spoke for the first time since the car, surprised that her voice still sounded stable.
“You’ll see. C’mon, we’re about to board. You still sure you want to do this?”
She couldn’t give him an answer, but she stood up anyways and held onto his arm as they scanned their tickets and moved down the jet bridge. He pressed kisses to her blonde hair, ducking down a few times to check on her as they made their way down and got settled into their seats, Ethan settling into the row beside her.
Indy kept her lip tucked underneath her top teeth, looking around at anything to distract her from where she was as her mind raced, so fast she couldn’t even pinpoint what was making her the most anxious.
“Focus on me. I’m right here,” Grayson hummed, reaching over to turn her face towards his for a moment. “You’re okay. We’re okay.”
“Yeah.” There wasn’t an ounce of conviction in her voice. She felt like she was going to cry, and she tucked her hood up over her ears, trying to drown out anything that sounded remotely like an airplane. Her lungs weren’t working how she wanted them to, and she sucked in breath after breath, none of them deep enough to relieve the tightness in her chest.
“Here. Try this.”
Long fingers tucked into her hood, moving her hair back from her ear so he could slip one of his headphones in. It fit snugly, and he scrambled to his phone, pulling up his Cudi playlist and scrolling through until he found what he wanted. The familiar intro of Teleport 2 Me, Jamie started to play as the final passengers boarded onto the rather large plane. How had everyone gotten on so fast? It seemed her mind was running away from her, making time move faster, bringing on the inevitable.
“This song makes me think about you, you know. I know Jamie is your middle name but still.”
She barely registered his words as a few tears snuck out of the corner of her eyes. Even her lips were shaking as she tried to breathe, curling in on herself with her knees pulled to her chest. The flight attendant was nice enough to not ask to see her seatbelt, sensing that she was better left undisturbed.
The guilt started to eat Grayson alive as he watched her struggle, running a hand over her back and leaning over to hold onto her, looking to his brother for support. Ethan’s eyes were wide with concern but he was just as helpless, not even being able to reach a comforting hand across the aisle because of the flight attendants passing by. It only got worse as they began to move - Grayson couldn’t tell if she was shaking harder or if it was just the movement of the plane.
The only good sign he got was her reaching her hand out in search of his. When he laced his fingers with hers she squeezed so hard he knew his bones were moving in a way they weren’t meant to, but he didn’t dare pull away. Not when he was the cause of her being in so much distress. It put a pit in his stomach, a mixture of the urge to apologize over and over and the wish that he could somehow climb inside her mind and soothe her, make her believe that she would be alright.
So, he did the next best thing he could think of. As soon as they had taken off, which felt like it took hours, he reached to her waist and unclipped her seatbelt.
“Come here.”
It took a moment for her to process, but once she understood Indy didn’t hesitate to climb over into his lap, curling up so small that she fit comfortably there in the wide first class seat, head tucked into the nook of his neck as he wrapped her up in his arms.
“You’re okay, I’m right here. I’ve got you.”
“I’m sorry, fuck I’m sorry,” she squeaked. If anyone else in first class heard it, they elected to ignore it. “It’s not usually this bad.”
“Shhhh, don’t. Just close your eyes. We’ll be there before you know it, okay?”
She reached a hand up to his neck, tucking it in against his skin under his sweatshirt as an anchor before she closed her eyes. She wrestled with her mind, trying to override with a focus on what she was physically feeling - his warm skin under her fingertips, the roughness of his beard against her forehead, the change of the song in her headphone. Her other ear was pressed against his chest and she tried to listen for his heartbeat, getting sidetracked when his hand moved her hoodie up barely so he could get underneath to her skin. One finger began to trace.
I-M-S-O-R-R-Y
She shook her head, tilting up to press her nose against him. It was her that should be apologizing, she thought. She hadn’t warned him properly of what to expect. That being said, it was true that she hadn’t had such a bad experience in a while - it only clicked then that it probably had to do with the fact that Grayson was on the plane too. If it crashed and she died, so would he, and the thought of it made her want to hurl. Instead, she clung to him tighter, forming letters by his collarbone with her fingertip.
N-O-T-Y-O-U-R-F-A-U-L-T
He pressed a kiss to her forehead, leaving his lips there for a moment before he shifted and rested his cheek on top of her head.
S-T-I-L-L-S-O-R-R-Y
She nuzzled closer to him.
I-L-O-V-E-Y-O-U
Against her hip, she felt four gentle squeezes, a silent I love you too as they continued through the sky.
--------------------------
“Jesus. It’s hot. Like, hot hot.”
“Ethan. It’s Cali. Of course it’s fucking hot.”
“Yeah, but it’s not natural for it to be this hot in fucking October. Anywhere.”
Indy listened to their bickering quietly, catching her breath a little more with each mile she put between her and the airport. It was just her leg bouncing now as she sipped on her gingerale - it had appeared on her tray table at some point in the flight and she hadn’t been able to stomach it until she made it out of the airport and into Ethan’s tesla, which was driven by Adele, a sweet woman with a kind smile and soft voice.
Grayson sat in the backseat with her, still on alert for any sign that she was anxious, hand resting on her thigh. But he breathed easier as he watched her body finally begin to accept that she was on the ground, and by the time they pulled up to the gate she was almost back to her normal self.
She enjoyed the feeling of her feet on the hard concrete of the driveway when she got out of the car, feeling a bit like a celebrity when the door swung open over her head. Grayson grabbed the bags and was immediately at her side, taking her hand and leading her up to the door. It wasn’t the first time that Indy had seen the inside of the house - she’d gotten glimpses of it on a few vlogs that they’d watched with Bekah one night. But there was a warmth to the space that didn’t quite read on camera, a familiarity that she realized was traces of Grayson everywhere, from the Cudi vinyls on the shelf to the wood based furniture that he’d definitely had a hand in making.
“I’m going to get Eden, I’ll be back in… I don’t know how long,” Ethan winked, immediately grabbing his keys and heading back out to the still warm Tesla, leaving his bag off the side of the kitchen.
“You up for a tour?”
If she was honest, her body was entirely exhausted, and her mind wasn’t far behind. But she perked up for his sake and nodded, taking his hand as he started to guide her through the house. He stopped in each room, showing off little details he’d helped pick out, from the colorful couch in the sunken room off the kitchen to the floating desk in Ethan’s room that he’d helped him install. The podcast studio was the most eclectic of any of them, with a massive wooden table that almost seemed carved around the blue light in the middle - not to mention the hot pink wall of the entrance, which was cut off by a wild jungle wallpaper wall that stretched from one end of the house to the other. Grayson spoke a mile a minute, explaining every step, every change they had made to the house since they’d bought it. Indy’s mind struggled to keep up, to visualize what he was saying, describing rooms she’d never seen.
“Ethan got the master this time around, so my room is a little smaller, but it’s cooler anyways.”
He guided her into a dark room on the right side of the hallway. It was somehow calmer than the rest of the house, and it practically zapped the rest of the energy out of her as soon as she passed the threshold. He showed her the green bathroom, the fancy toilet he’d picked out, his massive and meticulously organized closet. But when she flopped down onto the bed, she knew she was done for.
Grayson smiled when she hummed against the comforter - the first true sign of relaxation she’d shown since he’d picked her up from campus that morning.
“You tired bubs?”
“No,” she lied.
“You wanna take a nap?”
“No.”
“Your eyes are closed.”
“I’m resting, I just need like… 30 seconds.”
“You can sleep.”
“You were gonna show me the backyard though.”
She felt the bed dip down slightly, and then his lips were on her temple.
“The backyard will be there when you wake up. Besides, I need to get some work done anyways, and you’ve had a shitshow of a morning. Sleep, and maybe we can go get dinner with E squared later if you’re up for it, and I’ll take you to the beach.”
“E squared?” She muttered, only half motivated to stay awake for the answer.
“Ethan and Eden. They’ll be back over in a few hours I’m sure, he’s saving us from having to listen to their reunion fuck through the walls.”
“How considerate.” Her voice was muffled in the pillow, and it made Grayson smile. He moved to his closet, opening the extra drawer he used to store his blankets and pulling one out for her.
She vaguely felt the weight of the fabric being laid over her, and a gentle hum that sounded like ‘I love you’ before her body finally gave in and succumbed to sleep.
As soon as he knew she was out, Grayson got to work on all the things that he’d neglected in the last month. He made quick work of a full email inbox, a few calls that he stepped out of the room for, a Wakeheart campaign approval that he forwarded to Ethan - something about being back in LA lit the fire under him that always seemed to simmer out in the cool Jersey air. It took less thought, less intention to go into his kitchen, use his preset on the coffee machine with his favorite mug under it. Jersey was home, but LA was home, and he never realized how much he loved it until he was away for a while. His phone buzzed, loud against the counter - a text from Ethan running across his screensaver of the only picture he’d taken with Indy so far. He made a mental note to take more over the next few days before he opened the message.
Be there in 10, make sure everyone has pants on
He liked the message and stood up slowly, closing his laptop before heading back towards his room. He paused in the doorway, unable to help himself as he looked in.
Indiana was sprawled out across his bed, one of her legs escaping from under the covers. The pillow was tucked under her head, held by one arm while the other reached out to the empty side of the bed, hand splayed out on the fabric. With his phone already in his hand he couldn’t help but to snap a quick picture of her, a sweet memory that he knew he’d want to keep. He felt a little guilty having to wake her up from what seemed like such a peaceful nap, but he also knew she’d be made if he didn’t give her a chance to freshen up before Eden got there. So he leaned over and pressed a kiss to her temple, rubbing along her back until her eyes blinked opened.
“Time to get up sleepyhead,” he teased, keeping his hand on her hip as she rolled over and stretched out in the most adorable way.
“Hmmmm, c’mere,” she grinned, reaching up for him and pulling his lips down to hers. The little cat nap seemed to be the recovery her body needed, a reset that allowed her mind to focus on other things, like how good Grayson looked in the fresh t-shirt that he’d changed into while she was out. He indulged her, moving a knee onto the bed so he could get above her and get behind the kiss.
“Ethan’s gonna be here in 10,” he murmured, but his lips still moved against hers, his relief palpable that she seemed to be doing better.
“Then we have 9.”
“Eden’s coming too.”
She pulled back with wide eyes, and before he could say another word she was rolling out from underneath him. It took her two whole rolls to get to the other side of the bed, which was almost as endearing to Grayson as the way she scurried to her bag in the closet, immediately pulling out clothes like her life depended on it.
“Baby, it’s just Eden.”
“No, it’s Ethan’s girlfriend Eden. Which means she’s not just Eden, it means she’s very important.”
“Important? You act like this is a job interview or something.”
“It’s a girlfriend interview, which is worse.”
“A what?” He struggled to stay focused on her answer as she pulled her leggings off and wiggled into a pair of high waisted black jean shorts as she spoke.
“When you have a woman in your life, a good woman, who isn’t your girlfriend, they go into protective mode. It’s a maternal thing I think, but it doesn’t matter who it is, they keep an eye out for you. And the biggest threat that those women can see for their guy friend is a new girlfriend. It doesn’t mean she’s gonna hate me, but she’s definitely gonna want to vet me at the least. And I bet it’s worse because I’ll be around Ethan so much so she’ll want to be extra careful. Plus, she doesn’t know me from adam, and...hey. Hey. Are you listening to me?”
At some point in the middle of her explanation she’d taken her shirt off, and Grayson’s mind had gone a bit fuzzy at the sight of her bra - dark purple, with a peek of lace under the cups.
“Yeah, yeah sorry. Eden’s nice though, she’s sweet, there’s nothing to be scared of.”
She turned to him with a frustrated frown that he kissed away when he closed the distance between them, hands moving to hold her bare hips. Her skin was soft and still had a trace of warmth from sleep, and it made him hold on and rub his thumbs against her for a moment, trying to process that she was actually there with him.
“If you say so.”
“I do say so, and besides, her opinion of you isn’t going to change my opinion of you.” He kissed her forehead quickly and let go so she could get ready. She pulled a tank top on and headed into the bathroom, freshening up until the moment that she heard the front door open, signally Ethan and Eden’s arrival.
“Do I look okay?”
“Perfect as always,” he beamed, taking her hand and leading her back out towards the kitchen.
“Grayson!”
Eden came running around the island and barrelled into Grayson like she hadn’t seen him in years. He caught her with a smile, a laugh and a ‘hey evil’, an inside joke that Indy wasn’t let in on. She didn’t have time to dwell on it though, because she was immediately wrapped up in tan arms, her vision obscured by a curtain of wavy black hair.
“Hi! I’m Eden, it’s nice to meet you.”
“Hey, Indiana, nice to meet you too!”
The hug was as awkward as any first hug she’d ever had, but the smile on the boy’s faces made it worth it when Indy pulled back. Ethan was glowing in the way you only glow after you get laid for the first time in a long time, and he’d apparently worked up an appetite, because they didn’t spend more than five minutes in the house before they were headed out to Monty’s. Indy still tried to open the Tesla door like a normal one, barely stepping back in time when it lifted up above her head. To her surprise, Eden jumped into the backseat beside her, forcing Grayson up to the passenger seat next to Ethan.
“So, you’re in school right? To be a nurse?”
“A doctor actually, but yeah, I graduate in a little over a month with my Bachelor’s,” Indy explained, preparing herself for the questions she was sure to get, being careful to be truthful in her answers without accidentally saying something that would make Eden hate her. Ethan’s girlfriend had a sweet face, peppered in freckles that almost looked faded in her warm toned skin. Her eyes sat large on her face, making her look a bit like a doe. But her outfit told a different story - everything about it spoke confidence and bad bitch energy in a way that Indiana was only used to seeing on LA model’s instagrams. It hit her quickly that it was very much possible that Eden might actually be an LA model, and the thought made her mouth run dry.
“What do you do?”
“I’m a graphic designer.”
“Oh really? That’s amazing! What kind of work do you do?”
Eden launched into her career, from how she got there to what major brands she’d worked for - some of which shocked Indy. Grayson reached back behind his seat a few minutes into the drive, holding onto her leg and running his thumb along her skin as he balanced listening to his brother and listening to the girls. The energy settled in the cab, and Indy breathed out a sigh of relief at the realization that, for now at least, she’d passed the test.
It didn’t stop the questions though. A constant stream of information grabs, from her favorite things about New York to her family. Grayson squeezed tight when Eden mentioned her mom, throwing Ethan an unjustified look of annoyance. Indiana didn’t mind, though she didn’t love the look of pity that came over Eden’s face when she let her know that she had passed. But it moved on quickly, on to questions of her apartment, her college, her friends.
The only pause came when the Tesla rolled to a stop outside of Monty’s, which was packed with a long line outside. Eden let out a small sigh, reaching down for her purse.
“Usual, guys?”
They both nodded, a bit of unspoken tension growing in the air.
“Indiana, you wanna come with? The boys can just circle around.”
“I uh… yeah, yeah sure.” Indy went along with it, stepping out of the car quickly, trying to look back at Grayson through the window for some explanation, but they were so tinted that she couldn’t even guess what his facial expression was. Eden linked their arms quickly, leading her down the sidewalk and to the back of the line as if nothing had happened. Indy watched Ethan pull away quickly, and swore she could see a very concerned Grayson through the windshield.
“It makes it easier if they don’t have to get out. Too many people, and with a line this long the paps would show up.”
Two brunette girls in front of them turned around, interest piqued.
“Paps? For who?”
“No one, mind your damn business,” Eden said, waiting until they turned around to melt back into her usual friendly demeanor.
“I didn’t even think about that. About like, getting recognized I guess. But it happened in New York for the first time this morning, on campus.”
“LA is the worst for it. People see you take a picture with someone and then ask for one even if they don’t know who they are. Well, most people our age know who they are actually, but still. It’s not as bad in other places, just the occasional person. Et-” she cut herself off, knowing the girls were still eavesdropping. “He loves meeting fans but it gets to be a lot sometimes. So I try to help him out when I can. They’ll never ask for it, but they never turn it down either.”
Indy swallowed hard. She said it so casually, as if it was totally normal for the two of them to be standing there while their boyfriends drove around just so they didn’t get mobbed. She felt like a million pairs of eyes were on her as they inched forward in line every few moments. Eden just looked at her nails, picking at her cuticles.
“Does it ever get… normal? Them being recognized?”
“You learn to ignore it. And they don’t go out as much as you think. We’ll go out to show you around because you’ve never been here, but most of the time they’re home bodies. They kinda had to be, coming out here so young.”
“I can’t imagine coming out here at 15,” Indy mumbled, shaking her head.
“They’ve been through a lot. But then again so have you. So has everyone, at the end of the day.”
She was taken aback by the sudden depth of the conversation, but it didn’t last long, because soon they were close enough to the menu that Indy was asking questions. The Tesla circled again while they waited on the food, which came in little brown boxes stuffed into a bag. The girls waited on the curb for Ethan to pull back around, climbing in as inconspicuously as they could, getting settled into the backseat again.
“Got the goods?”
“You know it,” she grinned. Grayson reached back for Indiana again - he’d missed her in the few minutes that they were gone, and he didn’t realize he’d been anxious until it faded when she was back with him.
“We’re going to the secret beach, it’ll be like 10 minutes, so don’t eat all my fries.”
“I bought us all an extra to share.”
“Atta’ girl,” Ethan said, pressing on the gas a bit harder.
The secret beach, it turned out, was just a less populated one. But it was peaceful, washed pink by the beginnings of a sunset over the ocean. Grayson couldn’t tell if he was more overwhelmed by the colors in the sky or the feeling of finally having his own girl with him, someone’s hand to hold as he moved down the sand beside his brother and Eden. It had been almost a year of him being a third wheel, and he couldn’t stop looking over at Indy, his girl, who was there with him.
Her eyes were on the ocean. Sure, she’d seen the atlantic ocean plenty of times, but the pacific was different. It seemed bigger somehow, bluer, and it took her breath away. Food forgotten, she tugged on Grayson’s hand, only pausing to kick off her shoes before she was running down towards the water, laughing when the froth of the waves tickled her toes. Grayson’s shoes were soaked, but he didn’t care as he followed her down the coastline, laughing and yelling, picking her up around the waist and spinning her around, stopping to kiss her hard as the waves crashed. Ethan took a video on Grayson’s phone, a proud smile on his face as he watched his brother light up. Eden rested her head on his shoulder, remembering the days where that was the two of them, when everything was brand new and on fire.
The duo’s burgers were cold by the time they made it back up the beach, and Ethan had already started in on Grayson’s fries, much to his dismay. But they settled in the sand and ate their food, falling back into the group conversation between bites and swallows.
“So, you’ve been in LA for what, 5 hours now? Are you sold yet?” Ethan picked up another fry from the extra container, dropping it into his mouth.
“It’s gonna take a lot more to sell me on anywhere this far west,” she laughed, crumpling up the paper that her burger was wrapped in and tossing it into the box.
“Has Grayson made you a Jersey girl already?” Eden teased.
“It’s grown on me for sure, but nowhere compares to New York.”
Grayson chewed his last fry a bit slower.
“Yeah? Ethan took me into the city once when we were visiting Jersey but I don’t know much about it if I’m honest. I grew up in Texas.”
“The city is special once you get to know it. There’s so many different people, different cultures, new places to go. And it’s got all the best hospitals, which just makes me work harder because I want to work in one some day. Plus it uh… it’s just always been home to me. I can’t imagine living anywhere else really.”
Grayson’s stomach tightened, suddenly very full of food and smaller than when he’d started eating. They’d never really discussed living situations. He racked his brain, tried to remember if he ever mentioned that he was only staying in Jersey until the tiny homes were done. Surely she realized that he was going to come back to LA. He couldn’t tell if he’d subconsciously thought that she would want to move with him, or if he just assumed that they would handle the distance. But his mind was instantly filled with the image of Indy curled in on herself in a first class seat, and he resisted the urge to get up and walk it off as the guilt returned. The sun seemed to set faster, turning the beach indigo as everyone got up and headed back for the car.
Ethan took an extra moment to fold up the picnic blanket they’d brought, letting the girls get just out of earshot.
“Don’t do that.”
“What?”
“Don’t go all doomsday on this shit and shoot yourself in the foot. Cross the distance bridge when you get to it. You all haven’t been together a month yet, if you start talking moving across the country she’s gonna freak. Give it time.”
Most of the time, Grayson despised Ethan’s big brother persona - 20 minutes wasn’t a flex when it came to maturity in his book. But in certain moments, he was grateful for his level head. It helped him breathe a little easier as he headed back to the car, happy to see that Eden had shifted to the front seat. He took the back, a bit annoyed at the space between their seats - another perk of his Porsche, no doubt. But he settled for resting a hand on Indy’s thigh and leaning over for the occasional kiss as they found their way home.
Each couple bid their goodnights despite the early hour, a silent understanding of the do not disturb courtesy to be followed. Indy and Gray bumped hips as they brushed their teeth in the same sink, toothpaste filled smiles shining at each other in the mirror. They fell into each other like they’d done it a million times, even though they could still count on two hands the amount of times they’d had each other like this. It didn’t matter that they were in a new place. Grayson felt the same above her, beside her, behind her as they worked each other up and eased each other down. Their voices echoed off the walls the same, the attempt to stay quiet still there as they tried to give the other couple the same respect that they were no doubt trying to give them.
The travel caught up with Indy first - she was much less versed in time changes after all, and she fell asleep right after her quick shower, curled up in Grayson’s arms, his nose full of her vanilla shampoo and his mind racing, running laps around two words. New York.
He felt like he heard more about the city in his next few days than he did when he was actually there. They facetimed Bekah the next morning, glad to see that she’d made it out of surgery successfully, and that all was smooth sailing so far. She was ecstatic that her two friends we’re getting a break, and she excitedly showed them the new view of the city she had since her recovery room was on the other side of the hospital.
Indy wore a New York sweatshirt that evening when they went back to the secret beach, and she fell asleep with it on on the couch at home, leaned back against Grayson’s chest. He carried her to bed and kissed her forehead, but his eyes focused on the letters, which seemed to be staring at him in the dark.
They ordered pizza for lunch the next day, after an anxiety filled morning of Eden and Indy in a follow car behind the two of them longboarding with their friends. Eden asked about what made NYC pizza so much better, and it seemed like Indy could have talked for hours about crust and sauce, seasoning and ratios.
By the third day, it was consuming his every thought, and despite Ethan’s advice to let it play out, he knew he had to talk to her, or at least try to.
Indy was none the wiser. The LA sun had warmed her skin and her mind, leaving little lines of its presence on both. By the second day the house felt less like a hotel and more like a home, and she understood why the boys loved it so much. Eden became more than an acquaintance; she was easy to love, and the interview seemed to have stopped for the most part. But a part of her still itched for her New York apartment, the bustle of the city, the familiarity of campus and Jets and the blocks that she walked down.
She thought she’d hidden it well, but she learned she was mistaken on the last night they spent in LA.
“You’re ready to leave, aren’t you?”
Indy perked up from where she had settled on his chest. It was routine now, for her to rest against him and trace patterns on his skin before they dozed off.
“Hmm?”
“You’re tracing N-Y-C on my chest. You want to go home.”
“Home sounds nice, the plane ride doesn’t though,” she laughed a bit. Laughing was good. Calm, and put together. “Guess it’s just my subconscious.”
Grayson sighed against her, running his fingers over her back as he looked up at the ceiling.
“I didn’t realize you were so attached.”
“To what?”
“To the city.”
“Oh. Well, yeah. I mean, it’s home.”
“Home can be multiple places. LA is home, Jersey is home, hell, even Australia is home for me in a way.”
Indy’s neck got tired from craning up at him, so she shifted up to sit with her legs criss cross as he lounged back against the pillows.
“Well, I’ve never really had to make anywhere else home. New York has everything I need I guess.”
“You’ve never wanted to try somewhere else?”
Indy sighed, finally understanding.
“Gray, baby, it’s not like I hate it here. I know it’s important to you, and it should be. I’m just saying that New York is… well, it’s New York. It’s important to me, it’s where I’ve planned out my future.”
He sat up further, propping up on his elbow, resting a hand on her knee.
“What does that mean though? ‘New York is New York’. I mean, it’s a cool city, I’ll give you that, but it’s not just that, right?”
It took a moment for Indy to find her words. She’d never really tried to explain it to anyone, but if anyone would get it, it was him.
“It’s my mom.”
Grayson’s face fell immediately, and he opened his mouth, but she kept talking before he could.
“I know she’s not there. She’s wherever she is, I guess. But she breathed New York Grayson. That’s the last place that I knew her while she was still her, and the last place that she knew me. My memories of her live in that city, and when I’m not there I feel like I’m even farther away from her. And I already feel like I’m forgetting little things, because it’s been 4 years now, and I can’t even tell what I can’t remember, and it’s scary.”
Her breath caught in her throat a bit at the realization of what she was saying, what she was admitting. She’d never spoken any of it, not even to Charlie.
“Leaving would feel like moving on and leaving her behind, and I can’t do that. I can’t.”
Her face fell into her hands, and when Grayson’s arms moved around her and pulled her close, she let him.
He held her there until her tears stopped, rocking her barely back and forth until the wave had passed. He thought of Sean, of where he was, and what he would say. And he did his best to take on the heart of his father, to be like the man he so admired - selfless, and good, and strong for others no matter what it cost him. He pressed a kiss to her hair before he spoke.
“No one is asking you to leave. I promise, I’ll never ask you to leave. I promise.”

Hey! I absolutely loved your Zuko x reader one host you wrote, and I was wondering if you could do one where Zuko and the reader barely talk, but she’s part of Azula’s friend group. At the beach some stuff happens, and Zuko finds out she’s not as crazy as he thought she was. Kind of angst. I totally understand if you can’t, or don’t feel like it! I hope you’re safe and healthy, and everything is going well. Thank you!

Author’s Note: Ok this request is P E R F E C T. I don’t think I need to tell anyone I love the psychology of this show, but I love the psychology of this show - especially with Zuko and his relationship with himself and others. And this episode??? Ohhhhhh I have some THINGS. TO. SAY. about this episode. I have been in this boy’s place and I feel 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 him 👏🏻 he 👏🏻 deserves 👏🏻 better 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I went in a sliiiiiiightly different direction, but I didn’t drastically change it (it turned out cute I think). Also, I named this “From Eden” because as I was writing it reminded me of the Hozier song. I’m such a sucker for a Broken Babe™, especially when the babe in question has a lot of personal growth and learns to love because of it. Thank you so much for this, anon, you’re absolutely gorgeous and I hope you’re keeping safe and healthy as well ❤

“Hey.”
Zuko sat on the porch of his family’s old vacation home, his mind miles away. Your greeting made him snap his head towards you, glowering down at where you stood at the base of the front steps. You crossed your arms, responding to his gaze with a defiant glare.
“What do you want?” he growled.
“To have normal friends,” you spat in reply. “Seems I’m stuck with you instead.”
A few hours ago, Zuko almost made a crater in the beach from the campfire you, his sister Azula, and your friends Mai and Ty Lee had started a screaming match around. Insults were flung, tears were shed, and skeletons were evicted from closets, all resulting in your realization that maybe political survival wasn’t worth the dysfunction of constantly being surrounded by a sociopath and her cronies. Pretending to have a super fun sleepover with them back at the guest house was proving to be too much for your fragile sense of self-containment, and you weren’t quite friendly enough with your newfound death wish to tell Azula how you really felt about her, so you went where you knew it would be quiet. You didn’t expect to find Zuko and his anger issues there a second time, but he honestly didn’t scare you - you’d take his obvious rage over Azula’s subtle calculations any day.
“I don’t know why you’re complaining,” Zuko jeered. “You’re just as emotionally fucked as the rest of them.”
“Ty Lee’s got herself pretty much under control, despite her gullibility,” you answered cooly. “Also, if you really wanna talk about emotionally fucked, I’m not the one who almost roasted my ex-girlfriend alive earlier.”
Zuko furrowed his brow at you, leaning forward as if to challenge you. You stayed exactly as you were, regarding him with a hard, unimpressed expression that revealed just how little he intimidated you. You couldn’t bend and weren’t a trained fighter - you knew he knew this, and that he wouldn’t actually attack you, despite how convincing he tried to make his empty threat appear. After a long, intense moment of wrinkled foreheads and competitive frowning, he backed off with a sigh, leaning back against the pillar behind him.
“So, what, you want to come and make peace? Talk it out or something?”
You shook your head, climbing the steps and lowering yourself onto the second highest; just below him, with a few feet between you as a courtesy.
“The last thing I want to do is talk about that dumpster fire on the beach,” you told him. “I just needed some time alone. But, since I found you, I guess it’s a good time to ask if you’re okay.”
Zuko looked you up and down, a confused and partially concerned look on his face. You half expected him to raise the back of his hand to your forehead to check for fever.
“What do you care if I’m okay or not?” he asked bitterly. “We’re not friends.”
“Zuko, I’ve known you since I was a toddler,” you said. “I’d say we’re friends. It’s not like anyone else really is.”
“Mai is my girlfriend,” Zuko snapped at you. She’s the best friend I have!”
“Mai dumped you for being a possessive asshole,” you deadpanned, “then she let her best friend convince you to commit arson. Friends don’t let their friends’ sisters manipulate them into felonies.”
Zuko huffed, slumping back defeatedly.
“You can’t act like Azula’s never made you do anything you didn’t want to,” he grumbled.
“I don’t,” you replied shortly. “I’ve just stopped caring about making her like me, since she really doesn’t like anyone. She doesn't get under my skin like she used to when we were kids.”
You noticed Zuko’s lips curl upwards into the ghost of a smile. You mirrored him, leaning your arms atop your upright knees.
“What?” you asked.
Zuko chuckled faintly, shaking his head.
“Nothing,” he responded. “You just… Do you remember when you were eight, and Azula teased Ty Lee about being too slow climbing the trees in our courtyard?”
Your eyes widened in realization, your mouth parting into a wide smile as you let out a gasp of hysterical laughter.
“Oh, that was awful!” you cried, though the memory only brought more fits of giggles to your gut. “I was such a little brat!”
Zuko was laughing with you too now, arms wrapped over his stomach as he tried to speak between breaths.
“It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen!” he exclaimed. “Watching her fall out of the tree like that, the shock on her face, and then I caught you with the knife and saw where you cut the branch... She deserved it. You should give her a taste of her own medicine like that more often.”
You blushed, looking away from him as your laughter died down.
“Now she could kill me if she wanted,” you said. “I try not to say or do anything around her if I can help it.”
“... Is that why you’ve been so quiet since then?”
You nodded.
“She beat me up when she found out what I did,” you explained.
You stood, pulling down the waist of your sarong to reveal the burn scar on your right hip. Zuko’s eyes burst with shock at first, wondering exactly why you’d be disrobing in front of him, his expression softening when he saw the mark Azula left.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “Most brothers feel like they should protect their little sisters. I always felt like I should’ve protected all of you from her.”
“You did,” you assured him. You sat back down beside him, closer this time, so that your hips almost touched. “I remember you jumped in front of her once when she threatened us. And that time…”
Your voice faded, the memory almost bringing tears to your eyes. You couldn’t figure out why.
“You hid from her,” Zuko finished your thought.
You nodded.
“You let me hide in your room,” you recalled. “Remember? Azula punched me. I ran to the first quiet place I could find and accidentally went to your room.”
Zuko hummed.
“You were crying,” he added, “and your eye was all red and swollen.”
“You held me.”
Zuko’s eyes fixed on you. He didn’t say anything, though he remembered; you burst through his half open door, sniffling, tears and spittle running down your cheeks and chin. It was the first time Azula had actually, physically hurt you, and you were terrified and confused. He asked if you were okay, and you shook your head. Being so young, the only thing he could think to do was hug you, since that’s what his mother did to make him feel better, and you clung to him, sobbing into his shirt and using his much bigger body for protection. After that day, he let you use his bedroom as a hiding place whenever Azula got to be too much - until she found out about it and started teasing you about wedding dresses and baby names.
“We were friends,” you breathed. “I wish we still were.”
There was a long silence in which the two of you stared out at the horizon, down the steep hill leading to the vacation house and into the ocean. The moon hung in a small sliver, barely flickering across the calm waters that rocked below; you could hear the gentle rush of waves as they crawled over the sand and shrunk back into themselves, creating a calming din that echoed up to where you sat.
“... I still remember your favorite game to play with me,” Zuko said into the warm air between you. “Those times you hid in my room. You used to pretend to be a Kyoshi warrior. My mom gave you one of her old fans and we’d jump on and off my bed, trying to catch each other.”
You grinned.
“I would wrap myself around your legs to keep you from walking,” you recalled.
Zuko laughed.
“I loved that,” he admitted. “It used to make me laugh so hard when we were kids.”
He looked over to you, and you turned to face him as well. The anger in his eyes was gone completely, in its place a warm, steady sadness that made you ache.
“I miss you,” he whispered.
You reached cautiously for his hand, relieved when he slid his fingers between yours and gripped your palm tightly.
“I miss you, too,” you replied. “I’m sorry I let Azula drive me away from you.”
Zuko wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tender embrace. Your hands latched together on either side of his back, gripping into his shirt a little bit as you buried your face in his shoulder. He felt and smelled the same as he did when you were little; hard like the walls of a sturdy house and sweet like the last embers in a fireplace.
You didn’t know how long you held each other, but when you broke apart, you sat together for ages, existing in silence on the steps of his childhood house and beside one another. You felt small again, but in the best way - you felt like the girl who was brave enough to cut through the branches of a maple tree so your tormenter would fall out of them.
“I want to run away,” you blurted. “I could be someone totally different if I weren’t stuck here.”
“If you do, I’ll go with you,” Zuko said. “We can be different people together.”
You grinned, leaning your shoulder against his.
“We could move to Kyoshi Island,” you suggested. “I’m too old to start warrior training now, but we could start a business. Open an inn or something.”
Zuko chuckled at the thought.
“I’ll call myself Lee,” he mused, “and you can go by Izumi.”
“Maybe we could be married. And we could adopt orphan children and cats.”
“Just cats. You can’t emotionally destroy a cat like you can with a kid.”
You glanced over at him, noticing the hard gleam in his eye. You wrapped your arms around his bicep, holding him close to you.
“You’re not your father, Zuko,” you whispered. “You don’t want to be.”
Zuko nodded. He reached for one of your hands, curling his own around it.
“... I feel like I am going to leave,” he said, “at some point. When I do… will you stay? So that I have at least one friendly face to come home to someday?”
You nodded, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
“I will,” you promised. “And when you do, I’ll give you Azula’s severed head as a homecoming present.”
Zuko laughed at that.

Body Terror Song-AJJ
“I'm very sorry that you have to have a body
One that will hurt you and be the subject of so much of your fear”
Aviva had somewhat been avoiding Jin since their last conversation—which was difficult, as she was his manager, and they were smack-dab in the middle of a busy training schedule.
Hoseok was currently working with the choreographers to put together a routine to go with their debut song. Aviva hadn’t come to every rehearsal like she used to, busy talking to booking agents, and besides that, not having much (any) experience to do with dancing. Still Hoseok was a friend, and an important group member, so when he asked her to come see what they were working on and give him some feedback, she came.
“This part is on the offbeat, then you turn,” Hoseok explained, demonstrating the move for the other boys. “So, you want to take it from the top?”
Aviva applauded as she entered. “As expected from our dance captain!” She grinned at him, never unimpressed with Hobi’s dance skills. He smiled back at her.
“Don’t overdo it, Avi-yah, his head is big enough already,” Namjoon warned.
“Go hydrate while you have the chance!” Hoseok ordered, pointing off to the side where there was a line of water bottles along the floor. Jimin was already sitting, drinking and stretching. The others moved over to him, chatting as Hoseok sighed.
“What’s wrong, Hobi?” Aviva wondered. Hoseok shrugged.
“It’s going pretty well for our first run, but… there’s just one problem. I can’t help but feel like something’s missing…” He tapped his chin, looking frustrated. “What do you think, Avi?”
Aviva grimaced. “Sorry, I think I’m pretty useless in this situation. I’ve told you before, I don’t know much about dance routines—”
“Yah! Don’t put yourself down like that,” Hoseok said. “You might not be a dancer, but I’ve seen you speaking to the choreographers, watching videos, attending practices and taking notes. You’re our manager, and you’re our friend, your opinion is worth something.”
“Okay…” Sometimes Hoseok made her feel like crying with his emotional words. Half the time she was pretty sure he was doing it on purpose.
After watching the routine, Aviva spoke to Hoseok off to the side again.
“Yeah, I kind of get what you mean. It’s a pretty solid routine, but there’s no…” She made a like explosion movement with her hands. “No spice to make it stand out.”
Hoseok laughed, copying her movement. “Spice! You’re adorable, Aviva.”
“Shut up,” she muttered, feeling her face get hot.
“You know… I think you might have given me an idea though,” he said, leaning down to whisper it in her ear. Her eyes widened.
“Well that’s… daring.”
“Right?” He grinned widely.
“And, I guess, from a numbers standpoint, that would fit our projected demographic well.”
“You mean we’re hot so teenage girls are gonna be into it,” Hoseok translated.
“Teenage girls are one of the most powerful forces I know of,” Aviva said seriously.
“Hey, I’m not gonna argue with that.” Hoseok nodded. “I grew up with an older sister and five girl cousins around my age, and they saved my ass several times in our teenaged years.” He paused. “Come to think of it, they were the reason I got into trouble in the first place, half of the time, but eh, at least they cleaned up after themselves. Anyway…” He cupped his hands over his mouth. “Okay, boys, I have an important announcement to make as your choreographer!” The boys gathered around. “We have a signature dance move for our debut song! It’s… drum roll, please.” Yoongi slapped at Jin’s arm, creating a staccato beat. Jin winced and pouted at him. Hoseok laughed. “The ab reveal! We’re gonna pull up our shirts in the middle of the routine and show them off!”
Namjoon’s eyes widened.
“Are you sure? Pulling up our shirts? That seems… over the top.”
“The top over your head?” Aviva suggested, grinning. Everyone blinked at her. Aviva tilted her head. “Ah, that doesn’t work as well in Korean…”
Namjoon repeated it slowly to himself in English and then rolled his eyes.
“Ah, who are you, Jin-hyung?”
“She’s not as handsome,” Jin said immediately. Then he shrunk back as she looked at him. “Sorry…”
“Joon’s right though, we don’t want to overwhelm our audience,” Hoseok said thoughtfully. “So let’s just have one person do it! More of an impact!” He pointed excitedly at Jimin.
“Why… why are you looking at me…?”
“We’re counting on you, Jimin-ah! The success of our debut song is riding on your abs!” Namjoon said, clapping him on the shoulder and then speeding out of the room, the other boys following suit, as if afraid Hoseok might change his mind and make them all do it again. Aviva frowned.
“You okay, Jiminie? If it’s too much pressure, Hoseok can think of something else.”
Hoseok frowned. “What? I like this idea,” he grumbled. She elbowed him. “Yeah, sure, fine. Leave to me, manager.”
“No, it’s fine,” Jimin said, his smile a lot weaker than his usual shining grin. “I’ll do it. Don’t worry about me, manager-noona.” He left the room quickly. Aviva let out a breath.
“You guys better not pressure him too much. Honestly, it’s like we’ve learned nothing from that whole thing with Kookie…”
Over the next few days, Aviva kept an eye out for Jimin. She made a worrying observation that he didn’t appear to be eating, turning down even Jin’s home cooked meals in favor of diet shakes.
So Aviva sucked up her pride and asked Jin and Taehyung for help.
“I’ve heard it’s unfortunately pretty common in the idol industry, but has Jimin-ah done anything like this before?” Aviva asked Tae as they gathered in her kitchen early in the morning.
Taehyung had been excited to be invited to her apartment, but now seemed nervous. “Ah, noona, you know, I’m not really sure it’s my place to talk about that.”
“Right…” Aviva let out a breath. “Right, that’s true. I should just talk to him about it directly, but I was worried he was going to get embarrassed and not want to talk…”
“That’s a possibility,” Taehyung agreed.
“So, I thought I’d carry out Plan B at the same time as Plan A,” she told him.
“Is that where I come in?” Jin wondered, pointing at himself. Aviva nodded.
“I wanted to ask for your help making a lunchbox for Jimin-ah.”
“A lunchbox!” Taehyung clapped his hands together excitedly.
Jin smiled. “That’s a lovely idea.”
“If you’re comfortable telling me some of his favorite foods, and we can try to keep it as healthy as possible as well,” Aviva thought.
“Right!” Taehyung nodded, his expression turning serious. “I will make a list.”
“I’ll think of some healthy recipes,” Jin added. Aviva smiled.
“Thank you both.”
“Ah, there is something I wanted to talk to you about, Aviva-yah, if you don’t mind,” Jin said. She looked at him, curious. He cleared his throat. “In private, maybe?” Taehyung glanced at him, looking slightly suspicious. Aviva considered for a moment, and then pulled out her wallet.
“This is the company card,” she told Taehyung, giving it to him. “Why don’t you buy some ingredients for us to work with?”
“Yes!” Taehyung flashed his typical victory sign. “Grocery store, here I come!” He rushed out the door.
“Don’t forget your coat… ah, too late.” Aviva shook her head. “That boy.” She turned, seeing Jin smiling at her. “What?”
“Ah, no, I just thought, for all their flirting, mostly you just seem like their mom.”
She blinked. “Really? I thought that was Namjoon-ah, or you, maybe.”
“Me?” Jin tilted his head. “Well, I guess we can all share the burden. It takes a village to raise a child, right?”
“What did you want to talk to me about?” She cut to the chase.
“I wanted to apologize, again, for overstepping, when I was drunk,” he said. She frowned. “I wouldn’t bring it up again, but I know you’ve been avoiding me, so I realized it must have really hurt your feelings.” She ran her hand through her hair.
“I don’t know… It, that wasn’t very professional of me, oppa, sorry.”
“I accept the apology from you as a manager, but from you as a friend… it’s unnecessary. In the matter of friendship, I was in the wrong.”
“You didn’t hurt my feelings,” she said. “You just brought up something… something I’m not ready to think about, and I was worried you might bring it up again if we talked one-on-one.”
“Ah, well, I guess I almost have done that?” Jin smiled sheepishly at her. “I’ll do my best to avoid it from now on.”
“…Okay,” she said. “But, maybe… some day, if I ever feel like I’m ready to talk about it, would you… would you listen to me? Even if it doesn’t make very much sense.”
“Of course,” Jin said, taking her hands in his and squeezing them lightly before letting go. “Now! Please tell me you have a spare apron, because I am too handsome in this shirt to get it messy.”
She snorted. “Ah, yeah, there’s the one I bought for Soonie as a gag gift.” She pulled the frilly pink apron out of a closet and handed it to him.
“Hmmm…” He was blushing slightly.
“Oppa?” She gave him a weird look.
“Ah, it’s nothing. I just thought… she’d probably look cute in this.”
Aviva nodded. “Of course. She looks cute in everything.”
Jin laughed. “Hmm.”
Later that day, Aviva headed to the studio. She could hear Jimin working on his moves in the room down the hall. Then she heard a loud slam and ran forward to find Jimin collapsed on the ground.
“Jimin!” She quickly moved over to him, pulling his head onto his lap. He groaned.
“Ah!” He put a hand on his head, wincing. She ran her fingers through his hair gently, trying to see if she could feel any bumps or cuts. Jimin made a happy little noise, closing his eyes for a moment before jerking out of her arms. “Manager-noona!” He sat up, scouting away from her. “I’m alright. I just got a bit dizzy and it made me mess up the step.”
“Jimin-ah,” she said, trying to catch his eye, though he appeared to be avoiding her gaze. “I know this can be a sensitive topic for some people, but have you eaten today?”
“Hmm, that’s right, it’s about lunch time. Do you think you can hand me my bag? There’s a shake in there.”
“Jimin-ah,” she said again, taking his hands in hers. They were shaking. “I’m worried about you.”
“I’m fine!” Jimin said, his cheerful tone a little forced to her ears. “This diet is really working! I’m starting to get abs! Wanna see?” He started pulling up his shirt. “Here—”
“Yah, pabo!” Taehyung appeared in the doorway.
“Ah.” Aviva smiled slightly. “I thought you might have followed me here.”
“Tae?” Jimin frowned at him. “Who’re you calling pabo?”
“You!” Taehyung said. “I saw you fall over.” Jimin’s face flushed. Tae looked at Aviva.
“Show him what we made for him.”
Jimin looked at Aviva. She opened her bag and held out the lunchbox to him.
“Tae helped make this?” Jimin said doubtfully. “Tae Tae, you know I appreciate your cooking, but—”
“Don’t worry, Jin-hyung and Avi-noona did all of the cooking, I just helped pick out the ingredients,” Taehyung told him. “I know I’m not a very good cook.”
He wilted a little.
“I still appreciated the thought,” Jimin said quietly. “When you’ve tried making food for me in the past…”
“Yeah, but I don’t think Avi-noona appreciated when I set her smoke alarm off,” Tae thought. Jimin squinted at him.
“Tae, you bad boy—”
“It wasn’t too bad,” Aviva interrupted, waving her hands. “Everyone’s safe, so that’s all that matter—”
“You went to noona’s apartment without me?” Jimin pouted at him. Aviva blinked.
“What? That’s what you…?” She sighed.
“Yeah, so? You get to eat her home cooked meal,” Taehyung pointed out. “So you’d better appreciate it.”
“I will.” Jimin turned to her. “I do.”
“Say that after you eat it, maybe?” She suggested.
“Anyway, Jin-hyung was there the whole time, so it’s not like anything could’ve happened,” Taehyung muttered. Jimin grinned, opening the box.
“Yeah, I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Aviva said.
“It looks really good,” Jimin said, staring at the food. “But, my diet…”
“Noona and Jin-hyung specially picked the recipes so that the food was healthy, particularly for a dancer,” Taehyung told him. “Noona printed out scientific articles like she was possessed by Namjoon-hyung or something.”
Jimin snickered, and then his face turned serious.
“You did all that for me?” He asked Aviva. She nodded. “But, I’m trying to help too. I’m trying to be the best I can be, for this group. That’s why everything’s got to be perfect… When it’s perfect, I’ll feel better.”
Aviva sighed, pulling her knees up to her chest, and resting her chin there, staring at her feet. “You sound like Jungkookie, or my sister, or me…” She looked up again, finally catching Jimin’s gaze. “But let me tell you a secret, Jimin-ah. You’re never going to be perfect. There will always be another loose thread you can pick at. If you keep doing that, whatever it is you want to do, will never get done. Sometimes the best you can do, is the best you can do at that moment. Maybe one day you will be better, but that kind of change can’t happen instantaneously.” She smiled. “But what am I telling you that for? You know. You’re one of the hardest working people I know, Jiminie.” Jimin rubbed at his face and then took a deep breath.
“Don’t you make me cry!” He warned her.
“It’s okay if you cry,” Taehyung said. “I’ll hold you if you do.” Jimin made a face.
“…Only if Avi-noona joins.”
“…How about a pat on the head?” She offered instead.
Jimin ate half the lunch, slowly. He apologized for not finishing it all, but Aviva assured him that was okay. He hadn’t been eating, so eating quickly all of a sudden could make him sick.
She and Taehyung stuck around for the rest of Jimin’s practice, Tae doing his best to follow along, Aviva even joining along for a couple moves, making them all laugh as she growled with frustration at not being able to follow the choreography.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, manager,” Jimin teased her.
“Oh, I know,” she grumbled. “But I would’ve probably died trying.”
“Ah.” Jimin nodded. “I can understand that.”
“Live instead,” Tae suggested, slinging his arms around their shoulders. “It’s more fun to hang out all together. I’ll get lonely alone.”
“Okay, but get off of me,” Jimin said, shoving him. “You’re sweaty.”
“We all are,” Aviva said, wrinkling her nose as she looked down at her business clothes. “Hobi’s gonna yell at me for wrinkling my clothes again.”
Jimin snickered. “Oh yeah, hyung does that to me all the time! You’ve just got to change quickly and hide the clothes before he sees them.”
“Yeah, but I was going to drive you back, so he’ll see me,” Aviva thought, chewing at her lip. Jimin smiled slyly.
“We could stop by your place first, and could can change.”
“Ooh, can we borrow your shower?” Taehyung asked, his smile matching Jimin’s.
Aviva sighed. “Boys, I really don’t think it’s your intention to make me feel unsafe in my own home, hmm?”
They both blinked, and then exchanged a guilty look.
“Not at all!” They said in unison.
“Sorry.” Tae bowed slightly. “I know I’ve been teasing you a bit too much lately. I got overexcited because your reactions are amusing and I enjoy learning new things about you.”
“Alright, alright,” Aviva said. “Just get in the car.” She drove them back to the dorm.
“You practice this late every night?” Taehyung asked, looking up at the dark sky as they moved down the path towards the dorm. “Alone? Amazing!”
Aviva frowned. “Jiminie... are you sleeping enough?”
“I’m fine!” He said. “I’m not tired!”
“That’s not what I—“
“I’ve got to make sacrifices for my abs,” Jimin interrupted.
Taehyung poked at his own stomach.
“Hmmm. I’ll just hope for them in the next life.”
Aviva touched her stomach. “A healthy body looks different for everyone,” she said quietly. Taehyung and Jimin exchanged a thoughtful look.
“I know I said I’d stop teasing, but you do have a nice body, manager-noona,” Tae commented. Jimin shoved him.
“Tae! You can’t just say things like that!”
“What? She’s soft and nice to touch.”
“That’s worse!”
Aviva sighed, rubbing her temples. “Taehyung-ah, I think maybe you mean well, but you’re giving me a headache. Jimin-ah’s right, it’s not appropriate to say things like that.”
Jimin shot Tae a pointed look. “Okay, okay.” Taehyung waved his hand. “I’ll retract my statement.” He made a weird swooping movement as if swallowing back his words. She snorted. He smiled slightly. “There now… don’t be sad, manager. You and Jiminie can both have abs if you really want, but do it in a healthy way, please.”
Jimin blinked. “Tae, you—” He squeaked. “What the fuck was that?”
“Huh?” Tae looked around.
“I just saw someone sneak out of the dorm!” Jimin said, pointing at a far off darting shadow. Aviva squinted.
“It’s too dark, and my eyesight isn’t good enough to see who it is. Maybe it’s just Hoseok sneaking out to party. I know he did that sometimes in the early days of training.”
“Did he?” Jimin’s lips twitched. “Sounds fun.”
When they got inside, Yoongi was sitting on the couch working at his laptop.
He looked up when they entered.
“You’re back late.” He crossed his arms over his chest, giving them a pointed look. “Just what will I tell your mother?” Taehyung laughed as Jimin rolled his eyes.
“….Jin-oppa is the mom?” Aviva guessed.
“Of course.” Yoongi grinned.
Aviva looked around. “Joon isn’t up working with you tonight?”
Yoongi shook his head. “Everyone else is asleep.”
“Alright, boys. Get some sleep. I’ll be back in…” She glanced at her watch and groaned. “We’ve only got a few hours. By the time I drive back home and then I have to clean up, and then go to sleep and then wake up and come back here and—”
Jimin held his finger in front of her mouth.
“Why don’t you stay over?” He suggested. “I promise Tae and I will behave.”
“I will,” Tae seconded. “I don’t want you driving while you’re so tired, noona.”
Her brow furrowed. “Well, I guess you’ve got a point…”
Tae smiled. “Yay! Where are you going to sleep? Cause I like to snuggle—“
“Nope!” Jimin said, slapping him over the back of the head. “You literally just promised you’d behave.” Taehyung whined as Jimin pulled him out of the room. “Let’s go take a shower before bed.”
“Are they showering together?” Aviva wondered. Yoongi shrugged.
“Saves time.”
“…South Korea is surprisingly open-minded about some things,” Aviva thought.
“Maybe,” Yoongi said. “Or maybe it’s just us. Anyway, I’m going to be working for a while longer, so you can use my bed if you want. No cuddling with hormonal teenagers necessary.”
“Cuddling aside, I don’t particularly want to be sleeping in a room with six to seven boys,” she told him. He nodded.
“That’s fair. Neither do I.”
“... Sorry I haven’t found a bigger place for you guys.”
He sighed, brushing his bangs away from his face. “That’s not what I meant, Aviva-yah.”
“Okay...” She chewed at her lip. “Can’t I just sleep out here?” She pointed at the couch.
“You don’t mind me working?” He wondered. She shook her head.
“You don’t mind me snoring?”
He laughed. “I’m used to Joon-ah and Jiminie already.” He stood up, stretching. “I should get you a blanket or something—and do you need something to sleep in?” She hesitated, and then nodded. “You’d better come into the room with me, so you can tell me what’s okay.”
She frowned. “Won’t I wake them?”
He shook his head. “They’ll be dead to the world at this point.”
They walked into the bedroom. Yoongi walked over to the dresser, searching through a drawer. Aviva glanced around at the sleeping boys. Hoseok had his hand on his stomach. Jin was surrounded by a sea of stuffed animals. Jungkook was wrapped in his blankets like a caterpillar. She glanced up at Namjoon, who was sleeping with his laptop open on his chest. She hesitated and then climbed up the ladder, taking the laptop from him. He grunted and rolled over, continuing to snore. Aviva started climbing down the ladder, but fumbled while trying to hold the laptop steady.
She half fell on top of Yoongi.
He sighed, his breath in her ear.
“You’re just as bad as Namjoon-ah, honestly.” He steadied her on her feet and stepped away, shaking his head.
“…Thanks.” She placed Namjoon’s laptop on top of the dresser, careful not to disturb any of Hoseok’s figurines.
“Would these work?” Yoongi held up a pair of basketball shorts and a t-shirt.
She chewed her lip. “The shorts are fine, but the shirt would be a little… tight.”
“I figured.” He glanced her over and then looked away. “Namjoon-ah’s shirts are the biggest, but I can’t tell what of his is clean.”
“It’s fine,” she said. “I can just sleep in my undershirt.”
“…Alright. And there’s an extra blanket in the closet.” He smirked. “I’m not sure you’re tall enough to reach it.” She rolled her eyes.
“You’re barely taller than me.”
“Still counts!”
“You keep telling yourself that,” Jimin said, walking in with a towel wrapped around his waist. He glanced at Aviva and then quickly avoided eye contact, his face turning pink. “Ah… a little privacy please, noona?”
“Of course!” Aviva zipped out of the room, past an equally shirtless Taehyung, who just gave her his patented blank faced look. Yoongi followed her at a slower pace. He walked over to the closet and opened it. Aviva walked up to him. “Are there clean towels in there? I’m thinking maybe I should take a shower too. I tried to dance, so I’m all gross.”
Yoongi glanced her over again.“You look… fine, but I understand the feeling.” He handed her a blue towel with a yellow duck on it. “I haven’t used this since I last washed it, so it’s clean.”
She stared at it. “This is yours?”
“Yeah.” He shot her a challenging look. “So?”
She just grinned. “So, you’re cute.”
“Just… just go shower,” he said, his face flushing. “Go shower and then get some sleep before you have to start your day.”
Aviva felt much better after showering. She could use Hobi’s iron in the morning on her button up, and trousers, she thought it had some kind of gentle clean setting on it. She came back into the living room, wearing her camisole and Yoongi’s shorts, which were a bit tight on her, but not too much so.
Yoongi glanced up at her when she walked in. He froze. She sniffed, glancing at the mug in his hand. “Coffee? Are you not even trying to sleep?”
“I have to finish this, but you…” He frowned. “You’re the one who’s cute…”
She blinked at him. “What?”
“Too cute.” He suddenly pulled off his hoodie and held it out to her. “Wear that and cover up before the maknae line rushes over here drooling.”
“Stop being gross,” she said, pulling the sweater over her head anyway. It was warm. The fabric was worn, but not overly soft, it felt nice against her skin. “But thanks for this.” She snuggled into the sweater further.
“…I made it worse,” he muttered.
She squinted at him. “What’s that?”
“Nothing. Go to sleep. The blanket’s over the back of the couch. I’m going to record your snoring and use it in a track.”
“Use Joonie’s, it’ll have more impact,” she told him. He snorted. She plugged her phone into a charger and then put her glasses down on the side table. “Night, Yoongi.”
“…Night, Aviva.”

Frank was tense and you had no idea why.
Maybe he was regretting bringing you to his hometown, you’ve been dating for two years now, and he’d insisted that it was time, but maybe he was having second thoughts.
Or maybe he thought you weren’t having fun?
“This place is beautiful, Frank,” You beamed, trying to see if that would make him react.
“I’m glad you like it, I’m just happy is not that cold... Are you hungry? We could go have dinner somewhere...”
He eyed you up anxiously, you saw his arm tense and sink further into the pocket of his coat.
“Frank, is something wrong?” You asked.
“Hmm? Oh!” He blushed, though it could’ve been simply that he was cold. “I– Yeah I’m fine, I’m just asking because we’ve been walking for almost three hours now, so if you want to stop... that’d be okay.”
You looked around and found a tiny coffee shop not so far from where you were standing.
“I’d love to drink some hot chocolate,” You smiled, holding onto his arm and pulling him closer.
Frank smiled down at you, his eyes shinning like the little lights adorning the surrounding houses.
Once in the coffee shop Frank found you a table while you went to the bar and asked for your drinks. You saw a girl around Frank’s age approaching and then she stopped to talk to him. Your stomach shrunk with unease. You weren’t jealous, but that girl seemed to know Frank well enough, and she was really pretty. You looked at your reflection and tilted your head.
Sure, maybe you could be a bit more stylish if you wanted to, but to be honest you were comfortable wearing baggy stuff, things that wouldn’t suffocate you, and maybe you should try and get a new haircut eventually, but you liked the one you had...
You shook your head and grabbed the drinks. This was supposed to be a fun holiday and you weren’t going to ruin it by overthinking silly stuff.
“Hi,” You said politely. “I- uh... I have our drinks...”
The girl turned to look at you and her smiled widened.
“Is this Y/N?” She asked him.
“Yeah,” He smiled back, then looked at you. “Y/N, this is one of my old classmates from school. Her name’s Tania. Tania, this is Y/N.”
“He was just telling me all about you!” She replied with genuine interest. “It’s been years since I last saw him, I’m happy he seems to be doing well,” Tania stared at you appreciatively. “You have to come to our party next saturday! It’s kind of like a middleschool reunion, bet everyone’s dying to meet Frank’s partner.”
“Oh, I...” You looked back at Frank, who was just sitting there, beaming. “I... I guess we can make some time and go?”
“I’ll send you the address tomorrow,” Tania nodded. “I’ll go now, don’t want to ruin the date– It was a real pleasure to meet you, Y/N!”
“Likewise,” You replied shyly. Once she was gone, you sat down in front of Frank. “You never told me you were popular back in your hometown.”
Frank snorted. “I wasn’t, Tania’s an old spellingbee teammate.”
You nodded, taking a slow sip from your chocolate.
“So are we really going to the party?”
Frank hesitated. “I’d like to go, but only if you’re comfortable with it.”
You pondered, you’d like to hear more stories about Frank’s childhood, and a party sounded fun.
“Yeah, I’m fine with it... she was really pretty, you know? Tania.”
“You think so?” Frank asked without much interest, looking for his wallet.
“Yeah... wouldn’t be surprised if you had like... I don’t know, a crush on her when you were a kid, or something...”
He stopped his movements and looked up to you.
“A crush?” Before you could reply, he burst out laughing. “Oh no! She has a terrible attitude! Never one to enjoy teamwork, most of the time I would avoid her at all cost... I mean, I guess that doesn’t mean she’s not attractive, but she was never my type, really.”
You nodded, but Frank suddenly seemed to realize what you were trying to say.
“Y/N,” The young man held your hand, “I mean it. The first time I ever had a crush was when I met you.”
You snorted.
“I’m sorry, but I found that hard to believe. C’mon, I know you and I are good together but you surely must have had a crush on someone else before me! Like, there’s thousands of prettier people!”
“Prettier than you, you mean?”
“Duh,” You shrugged. “It’s okay, I know I don’t exactly dress to impress...”
“Hey, you’re breathtaking,” Frank replied lovingly. “At least for me you are, not that it matters, as long as you’re comfortable with how you look like, that should be enough.”
“I am,” You smiled squeezing his hand. “Thank you for the compliment.”
***
You were back in your room, getting ready for bed after the long day you two had, you were talking about a silly comercial you’d just seen and putting on your pijama pants when suddenly you noticed the room was too quiet.
“Frank?” You asked without turning, still struggling to put on Frank’s shirt with which you usually slept. “Did you fall asleep already?”
When you turned around you let out a short squeal. Frank was right behind you, and he was kneeling down on one knee.
“Y/N,” He started, trembling hands trying to mantain the little box steady. “I was planning to do this on Christmas morning, but today I realized that’s a bit cheesy and unoriginal, and if there’s someone who deserves to have a nice proposal, that’s you– But uh, well I didn’t have anything planned, I’m sorry.”
You laughed, fighting against the tears that were threatening to blurry your vision.
“I still hope you like this, though,” He smiled, his eyes starting to tear up as well. “When I’m with you I feel at home, and I know you feel the same. Life is really uncertain and crazy, but I’m sure that I love you. I’ve made my decision, and I don’t want to pressure you into anything, we can wait– I can wait for you... I just need to know, Y/N, would you marry me?”
“Yes!” You fell to your knees and hugged him tightly. “Oh gods, so this is why you were acting so nervous? Holy Hera, Frank, I was so worried!”
Frank laughed, kissing your temple. “I’m sorry, I wanted to make it really special, but I was so nervous all the time...”
“It’s okay, this was perfect,” You shook your head, watching as he put the ring in your finger. “We’re perfect.”

Hot ‘n Cold
Kim Namjoon x Reader
(Written for a writing game by @letsgetitinbusan)
6059 Words
Genre: Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Smut
Warnings: Consumption of Alcohol, Swearing, Unprotected Sex (Wrap it before you tap it, kids), Outdoor Sex, Vaginal Fingering
Summary: A camping trip takes an unexpected turn
Preview:
“You feel much warmer already.”
“Mhh, you are helping a lot with that.”
“I think I noticed. Good to know I can be of assistance. It’s getting quite hot in here, don’t you think?”
Bliss. Overwhelming and all-consuming bliss clouded your mind when you walked out the door of the lecture hall you just took your last exam of the semester in. Making your way through the crowd of students towards the nearest exit you hurried out of the building knowing you wouldn’t have to set foot in that hellhole that dares to call itself a university for the next beautiful, fun-packed, exciting 8 weeks of summer break. On the way back to the dorm, fully immersed in your phone, you suddenly felt a large hand gripping your shoulder. Hurling around, the grinning face of Namjoon, your friend and next-door dorm mate, appeared in your view.
“Guess who got himself full marks on their last project of the year?”
Namjoon exclaimed practically beaming with elation and pride.
“Hmm let me think…  Must have been that dude you hung out with last week, right?”
You said teasingly, pretending to think hard to guess the answer to this, truly very difficult, question considering the genius mind of your friend.
“No, silly, it’s me of course.”
Namjoon rolled his eyes and continued.
“Anyway, how was your exam? Any more luck this time?”
“Ugh, I wish. It was a disaster, my brain feels like it’s been sucked out of my head. I’d be surprised if I actually passed though knowing my prof, I highly doubt it. That man just can’t teach a class for the life of him. It’s an outrage he has the audacity to have us take an exam on that waste of a time his lecture was if you ask me.”
You rambled on frustrated but continued jokingly.
“I might have to borrow that big juicy brain of yours next time so I have an actual chance to succeed.”
“Ready to get wasted at the camp tonight then, I assume?”
“Hell fucking yeah I am.”
Laughing, you both continued down the paved road leading to the big grey building that was your dorm. Dragging yourself up the numerous sets of stairs you asked yourself for the thousandth time why exactly you’d thought picking a room on the 5th floor of a building that has no elevator was a good idea. Well, at least you had the best crackheads you could wish for as neighbours so that was something, you thought to yourself. Over the years you had lived on that floor, you and the others had bonded over your shared struggles of living in that falling-apart building and the uncountable tragedies that unfolded within those walls, including that one hot summer in which the rusty, ancient water pipe burst and thus none of the inhabitants had running water for two weeks straight. Out of that emergency situation a new tradition was born with all of you packing your essentials and riding your bikes down to the shore and going camping every summer during semester break.
“Bet Jungkook hasn’t even started packing?”
Namjoon said and knowing his room mate, you agreed.
“Better help him then, we should leave as soon as possible so we can secure our spot at the campsite. I don’t trust people these days, that spot is getting popular and I’m not taking any chances.”
With a last wave at him you unlocked your door and disappeared into your apartment. Ever since your former room mate and parter in crime had moved out earlier that month you had the flat to yourself and you still weren’t accustomed to having that much space for your stuff. Sadly, your flatmate had moved across the country meaning she couldn’t take part in the camping trip this year.
Scanning your possessions, you skilfully grabbed various items and articles of clothing you’d be needing for the next few days and threw them on the bed. After ticking everything off of your imaginary list, you began packing the pile of things into your backpack.
Not much later and after checking your groupchat to make sure that everybody was ready to go, you left your room and walked down the corridor meaning to knock on the door on the right. It immediately opened and Yoongi appeared in the frame, manoeuvring his belongings into the hallway.
“Good to go?”
You asked to which Yoongi hummed in agreement. You descended down the staircase together carrying your equipment.
“Is Jimin downstairs already?”
You wondered, since Yoongi’s room mate was nowhere in sight.
“Nah, he still got that dance performance with Hoseok this afternoon. They will join us later this evening.”
“Right, right, forgot about that.”
In front of the building Namjoon, Jungkook and Taehyung were already loading their luggage onto their bikes. When everybody was done you set off on your journey revelling in the beautiful feeling of freedom awaiting you at the camping site. After a good hour you turned into the path leading towards the clearing at the beginning of the small forest by the shore. Upon arrival Jungkook immediately spotted the car that was parked right beside the track.
“How does he manage to be here first every time? I swear he does that on purpose just to rear me up.”
Jungkook whined at the sight of his brother.
Pausing the unpacking of his luggage from the trunk of his car, Seokjin greeted you all with a wave and a big smile.
“Great! You made it just in time to help me unload the tents.”
“Speaking of, we need to agree on sleeping arrangements since a certain someone managed to rip theirs last year.”
Yoongi said and all eyes lingered on Namjoon who looked at the ground in shame.
“Let’s see… We got four tents. That means Taehyung and Jimin in their tent and Yoongi and Hoseok will share one, I guess? Then me in my tent and Y/N in hers. Which means Namjoon and Jungkook will have to seek shelter in one each. Any preferences?”
Jin spoke and looked at the two tent-less members of the group.
“I don’t mind sharing the tent with Y/N. Uhh... I mean if she doesn’t mind of course.”
Namjoon said quickly and you couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Fine by me. As long as it’ll still be in one piece by the end of this trip.”
“Great, that’s settled then. Little brother, the honour of sharing a tent with this handsome guy is all yours.”
Jin said exaggeratedly gesturing at his face which Jungkook could only answer with a grimace, seeming a lot less excited about said fact than his brother was.
You busied yourselves to take the tents out of the trunk of the car and searched for the perfect spot to put them up. You walked across the clearing examining the ground thoroughly with Namjoon following behind with your tent under his arm.
“What about here? We’d get some shade from that big oak tree right there and it looks like the ground is as even as it can get.”
You asked and Namjoon agreed.
“Perfect. You really have a good eye for that. Remember the first time we went camping and you and your room mate placed the tent directly above a molehill?”
Namjoon laughed and you snorted at the memory.
“Please don’t remind me, I got the shock of a lifetime when suddenly something tried to make its way in from underneath the tent. Never screamed so loud in my life.”
“I remember you woke us all up thinking you were getting stabbed or something. Scared the shit out of me.”
Namjoon said and started setting the tent up. Since he was very skilled in putting the pieces together, you didn’t have to do much besides holding the poles up for Namjoon to drape the fabric around. After a few minutes the mission was accomplished and you looked pleased at the joint achievement.
“I’m really glad you picked me to share a tent with. Without you I would have been struggling a lot more to get it set up.”
“Well thanks for trusting me enough to let me into your holy cave.”
At that remark you stopped dead in your tracks and burst out laughing then turned to Namjoon with an incredulous look. Namjoon who seemed to have realised just now how much of an innuendo his comment had been covered his eyes with his right hand shaking his head in disbelief.
When the others were done setting up their tents, Taehyung and Jungkook began collecting some wood and stacked it into the fireplace that had been built in the middle of the clearing. The rest of your group took seats on the logs that were placed around the firepit and unpacked the food that you had brought. Jin and Namjoon took it upon themselves to act as masters of the meat and impaled sausages with some thin sticks to roast them over the fire. By the time the first batch was done, Hoseok and Jimin finally arrived and were greeted with shouts. They joined the jolly round busying themselves to some well-deserved dinner.
After you had devoured the sausages Hoseok whipped out a box containing some crackers, a bar of chocolate and a bag of marshmallows out of his backpack.
“Nothing better than some S’Mores when camping, am I right?”
Hoseok asked and handed the box around letting everybody grab some for themselves.
Jin nudged Taehyung in the shoulder who sat on his left and asked him to accompany him to his car. When they made their way back to the rest of the group, they were carrying bottles upon bottles of Soju.
“At the last wedding we catered for, those people ordered way too much alcohol and they refused to keep the leftover bottles so naturally I found a convenient solution to that problem and persuaded my boss to leave the good stuff to me. Not even he can resist my charms I assume.”
Jin told you and overall cheers complimented him.
“Awesome Jin, you working at a restaurant really has its perks.”
You said approvingly and happily accepted the bottle of peach flavoured Soju Taehyung handed you over.
While the supply of Soju slowly shrunk and the pile of empty bottles grew, your mood became more light-hearted over time and you all reminisced in the memories you had made over the years. Slowly but steady the sun set and it got darker. When the glowing red ball of light had finally disappeared completely behind the horizon Jimin and Hoseok declared that they were tired and proceeded to get ready for bed.
“That dance performance really makes itself felt now. Maybe I have to admit that I’m getting older.”
“Don’t worry Hobi, it took a toll on me as well. But at least we know we gave it our all.”
Jimin said and stifled a yawn. The two headed to the cabin at the edge of the clearing that contained a rather humble bathroom but at least it offered a tank of fresh water so that was something.
Gradually one after the other decided to go hit the hay and bid the remaining few people goodnight. When only Namjoon, Jungkook and yourself were left sitting around the fire, the three of you decided to play a drinking game resulting in Jungkook getting so drunk that he had to throw up. Namjoon hurried towards the bathroom in the cabin to get some water while you comforted Jungkook. You grabbed a napkin and wet it with the fresh water Namjoon had brought back and began cleaning around Jungkook’s mouth wiping the nasty residue from his face. Unfortunately, a lot had already dribbled down onto his shirt.
“I think you should get that thing off. We can wash it tomorrow but for now just change into a fresh shirt.”
You said to Jungkook and helped him out of the soiled piece of clothing. Jungkook who couldn’t control the movements of his limbs properly, let his right arm snap back after retreating from the sleeve of his shirt resulting in hitting the container of water Namjoon was still holding. A splash and Namjoon had gotten the majority of water over his chest. Cursing he let the now empty container fall to the ground. Namjoon tried to wipe some of the water off his body but it was useless, he was drenched. You laughed at the sight. It reminded you of a puppy who had just received an unwanted shower.
“We should get you to your tent so you can rest. Do you feel a bit better now?”
You asked Jungkook and he nodded. Namjoon helped you escort Jungkook to the tent he was sharing with Jin and made sure he got in alright, closing the entrance behind him.
Back at the fireplace, Namjoon stood by the flames as near as possible trying to get them to dry his shirt but the fire had already died down significantly so it didn’t really work. Resigning, he lifted the wet fabric above his head and threw it next to himself on the log. You couldn’t help but give him a sneaky glance. You had always thought of Namjoon as really handsome but something about him revealing his wet chest so shamelessly to you hit different.
“Do you wanna stay up or go to sleep as well?”
Namjoon asked and caught you off-guard in the act of looking him up and down, your eyes lingering on his chest a little longer than necessary. Flustered you directed your eyes away and shook your head.
“No, I wanna stay up, I want to enjoy this as much as possible.”
“You talking about my body or the night in general?”
Namjoon joked and you secretly asked yourself the same question. You proceeded to grab one of the last bottles of Soju and took a sip so you had an excuse not to answer.
“Want one as well?”
You asked and seeing him nodding, you handed him one of the bottles. After the first gulp he scrunched his nose looking appalled. Checking the label, he felt his worst suspicions confirmed.
“You gave me one of the flavour-less ones! What do you take me for – an animal? What have I done to you to deserve such torture?”
You laughed feeling not as sorry as you maybe should have as Namjoon looked really funny being so disgusted by his beverage.
“Sorry, I couldn’t see well and just picked the one nearest. Want a different one?”
You took a close look at the three remaining Soju bottles and gave Namjoon an apologetic smile.
“I’m afraid they are all plain as well. Seems like I got lucky and picked the last grape flavoured one.”
“So that’s what I get for trusting you. I feel betrayed.”
“Um do you wanna share mine? I don’t mind, I’ve had enough alcohol anyway.”
You offered your bottle to Namjoon and he didn’t hesitate to take it, chucking his own bottle away. How could he turn down such an offer when it appeared so temptingly? Taking turns emptying the drink, you sat in comfortable silence just listening to the occasional sound of the woodland creatures nearby and gazing up at the night sky. Here in the middle of the forest without all the street lights and neon signs lighting up the night, the stars were clearly visible and shone bright and clear. You loved the night sky, so naturally you were gazing upwards totally lost in the twinkling lights of the millions of stars.
You didn’t notice the lingering eyes of Namjoon who was admiring how the moonlight illuminated your silhouette. When exactly he had caught feelings for you, he wasn’t quite sure. All he knew was that it somehow happened and when he finally came to terms with that, he was already crushing hard and even though there had been the occasional teasing and ambiguous situation he still didn’t think there was more to it than just that. You had been friends for ages so anything beyond that was surely out of the question, right? Therefore, he hadn’t given it much thought but the way you had looked at him when he took off his shirt didn’t go unnoticed and Namjoon couldn’t help but wonder if there was a possibility that he wasn’t the only one who had developed a crush over the years.
“Do you ever wonder why we are here on this earth?”
Namjoon was pulled out of his thoughts by the sudden question. You looked at him and continued your philosophical train of thought.
“I mean look, there are so many stars and planets up there. Why out of all places do we exist on this one? And think about it… The moon and the stars are so far away but we still see them. They are so huge we can actually see them from here. Isn’t that amazing?”
Before Namjoon could answer you rambled on.
“And we are so small. We are so small, Joon, why are we so small? So insignificant? The stars shine so bright even after they had died but we are just dead, just rotting. Why do I even bother accomplishing anything when in the end it means nothing and everyone will forget that I even existed?”
You finished and stared at Namjoon. The sight of you looking so desperate and sad devastated him.
“Y/N… That’s not true and you know it. You are so loved by your family and your friends. You could never be insignificant and of course the people around you will remember you. Please stop thinking so lowly of yourself, I can assure you, you don’t have to worry about that.”
“Th-thank you… I suppose I had to much Soju, I’m sorry you had to witness me spiralling into another existential crisis.”
“Don’t be sorry, that’s what friends are for, right?”
“Yeah… friends.”
You mumbled and looked up at Namjoon. Your eyes met, holding the gaze for a bit longer than expected before Namjoon cleared his throat.
“So, do you wanna go to bed? It’s getting quite late.”
“Hmhm yeah it’s getting colder, as well, now that the fire went out.”
You shivered suddenly at the cold air of the night, missing the warmth the fire had provided. Namjoon stood up and checked the fireplace to make sure it was really gone out so you wouldn’t accidentally set the whole forest on fire while you slept. You collected the remaining bottles that were scattered around the firepit and added them to the already remarkably high pile of bottles you had all emptied together. Finding the way to your tent turned out to be a lot more difficult, now that it was almost pitch black. You stumbled over a root that was sticking out of the ground and could only save yourself from falling by gripping onto Namjoon’s wrist tightly. He swayed back at the sudden weight pulling on his arm but managed to steady himself in time.
“Are you alright?”
Namjoon asked concerned and turned around. You were still holding onto his wrist but had found your balance again. When you let go of his arm Namjoon held his hand out to you.
“Wouldn’t want for you to trip again. Really, why don’t you wear your glasses more often? Couldn’t read the label on the Soju bottle, couldn’t see that big root. Honestly I’m surprised you managed to survive without getting into any serious accidents yet.”
“Come on it’s not that bad. And I hate my glasses, I look stupid wearing them.”
You scoffed. You hated your glasses with a burning passion but were too lazy to go get new ones that you would actually consider wearing.
“You don’t, you look cute with them and not stupid, at all, but if you prefer to stumble through life like a mole squinting at everything then suit yourself, I guess.”
“Thanks, I will. Besides, I wouldn’t want to miss out on the chance of being escorted to my humble sleeping accommodation by my chivalrous saviour now, would I?”
You said cheerfully and took Namjoon’s hand. You continued the short walk towards your tent. When you’d reached it, you opened the zipper and crawled inside and Namjoon followed you straight. Leaving your shoes in front of the entrance you slipped out of your pants. You made yourself comfortable in your sleeping bag while Namjoon rid himself off his jeans and tucked himself into his sleeping bag as well.
“Joon, can you hand me the water bottle? I feel like a raisin, all that Soju dried me out beyond measure.”
Namjoon felt his way through the items popped into one corner until he found the requested bottle.
You took it and quenched your thirst, downing almost half of the bottle in one go.
“Hey, leave me some okay? You’re not the only one who’s thirsty.”
You reluctantly stopped gulping down the water and held the bottle out in the direction of Namjoon. Since it was almost completely dark inside the tent, Namjoon had problems to make out the bottle causing him to hit it with the back of his hand. With a shriek from you the bottle flew out of your hand and landed on your legs, letting the water flow all over your sleeping bag.
“Y/N I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! Did you get wet, is it bad?”
Namjoon apologized and pat his hand over your sleeping bag to see how badly he had fucked up but all you could do was laugh, being already so used to his clumsiness.
“It’s okay, really. But I won’t be able to sleep in that thing, it’s soaked and it’s getting cold tonight.”
“No worries, you can sleep in mine. It’s my fault that yours is wet, after all, so that’s only fair.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, you’ll be freezing.”
“I won’t, I can stand the cold better than you, so just take mine and go to sleep.”
In the end you didn’t want to argue and the thought of sleeping without a cover wasn’t that enticing either, so you just got out of your wet bag and threw it out of the tent. When you wiggled into Namjoon’s sleeping bag which was a lot more spacious than yours and conveniently was already preheated by Namjoon. You felt the overpowering fatigue that set in and quickly slipped into unconsciousness.
After a while, you woke up at the sound of teeth chattering. You turned around only to see Namjoon laying curled up into a ball and shivering.
“S-sorry, did I wake you up?”
“What the fuck do you think you are doing? Do you want to freeze to death?”
“It’s f-fine, don’t worry. Just get back to sleep.”
“Fine my ass. Do I look stupid to you? Come here, your sleeping bag is a lot bigger than mine. We might have to squeeze a bit but I think we can both fit.”
You opened the zipper and shuffled towards Namjoon. When he had squeezed himself in, he tried to close the sleeping bag but it was no use.
“Doesn’t matter, just leave it open. It’s better than nothing isn’t it?”
You said and Namjoon turned around only now realizing just how close you were.
“God, how are you not frozen solid yet, you are ice-cold!”
“Not everyone can be as hot as you.”
You let out a small chuckle and pressed yourself closer to Namjoon’s body, making yourself comfortable as the little spoon.
“Then I’ll try to make you hot, as well, lying beside a fucking block of ice truly is no fun.”
Namjoon thought you had no idea how right you had been about making him hot. While the two of you had occasionally cuddled during movie nights at the dorm, nothing came close to just how close you were now with nothing between you, except for your underwear and your shirt. With you next to him and the added warmth of the sleeping bag around, Namjoon started to defrost and soon he was engulfed in the warm feeling, ready to fall asleep but he was too aware of your body pressed into him. It really wasn’t necessary for you to push your ass that far into his groin, he thought. It was almost as if you were doing that on purpose just to drive him crazy. But maybe he was misinterpreting everything and he would make a fool out of himself.
As if on cue Namjoon felt you move your body just a bit, letting yourself grind into him slightly. Throwing all caution over board he put his arm around your waist pulling you even closer and letting his hand rest on your stomach. You let out a satisfied sigh and proceeded to move yourself against him. The friction had its effects on Namjoon who noticed himself hardening, very aware that you must feel it too since his boxers barely concealed anything. You however, were finally content that your actions bore fruit. You had been sure of the potential that lay in yourself and Namjoon to be more than just friends and you were determined to find out if you were right about that during this camping trip. Sharing a tent was the best opportunity you could have wished for and considering the very noticeable bulge you felt being pressed into your back from behind you had been right with your assumptions.
“You feel much warmer already.”
“Mhh, you are helping a lot with that.”
“I think I noticed. Good to know I can be of assistance. It’s getting quite hot in here, don’t you think?”
You said and took off your shirt to throw it to your feet. You then turned over now facing Namjoon. He was taken aback by this sudden change and could feel your breath on his bare chest. You placed your hand onto his stomach and slowly progressed to explore his toned body.
“How exactly do you think this is helping us to cool down?”
Namjoon asked, sucking in his breath when you let your fingernails graze the side of his upper body.
“When did I say I wanted to cool down?”
You asked quietly, tilting your head up so you could meet his gaze. This was enough to convince Namjoon that he was allowed to act upon his feelings. He let his hand rest at the back of your head and leaned forward until your lips finally collided. He pulled you closer to himself and you wrapped your arms around his torso. The kiss became more heated and Namjoon let his tongue poke through his lips so you parted yours to let it in. When you had to let go of each other to be able to breathe again Namjoon stared at you, having to process for a moment if this was actually happening. With a huge grin you threw yourself onto him again to continue the kiss. Namjoon’s hands wandered up and down your back brushing against the straps of your bra. You felt his finger hesitate on the hooks of your bra.
“Go on – open it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, oh my god, do you need a written declaration of consent?”
You giggled at how considerate he was being.
“Just wanted to make sure so you won’t hold it against me later.”
He smirked and with one move of his fingers he had opened the bra and pulled it away from underneath your body. Within seconds you found yourself turned over so you were laying on your back with Namjoon on top of you. With one hand he propped himself up to not crush you completely while his other hand immediately found its way to your breasts. Namjoon kissed you once more before he let his mouth trail down your chin and neck leaving hot kisses on your skin. You had closed your eyes revelling in the addictive feeling when you felt a sudden burst of pain shooting up from your breasts causing you to let out a surprised moan. Namjoon had pinched your right nipple with the hand he was using to massage your boobs. You opened your eyes in shock and found Namjoon smiling mischievously up at you. He had been keeping his eyes on you to observe how you reacted to his actions and was visibly enjoying himself. Letting his hand travel down to your stomach resulted in his face being conveniently positioned exactly over your breasts so he didn’t hesitate and began to caress them with his lips. Namjoon sucking on your tits while simultaneously exploring your still covered pubic area with his free hand had you aroused in no time and you could already feel your panties getting soaked from the movements of his hand, which Namjoon also didn’t fail to notice.
“Seems like you can get me wet in more than one way.”
You said referring to the accident earlier and Namjoon couldn’t refrain from laughing causing his body to vibrate which let his fingers move against your crotch in a delightful manner.
“Well, I know which way I prefer.”
Namjoon said when you let out another moan. He hooked his finger into your panties and pulled them down, so you lay before him completely undressed. His hands caressed your thighs for a bit until he put light pressure onto them to spread them open for him to kneel in-between. You suddenly felt the imbalance in your levels of being undressed, so you sat up catching Namjoon’s lips in a needy kiss while letting your hands palm his hardened length through his boxers for a moment before pushing the unnecessary piece of clothing down his legs so both of you were equally nude. Namjoon pushed you back to lay down again and you obliged. He let his one hand return to your breasts while the fingers of his other hand slid through your slick folds.
You didn’t want him to feel neglected and reached down so you could wrap one of your hands around Namjoon’s dick. Though your grip was only light, Namjoon let out a groan of pleasure at the sudden sensation. Encouraged by his response you slid your hand up and down his shaft and let your thumb graze over his tip every other time using the leaking drops of pre-cum to lube his length up. Namjoon stopped moving his fingers through your folds only to enter you with one finger a moment later. You let out a quiet mewl at the unexpected sensation. You kept your gaze on him, mesmerized at how Namjoon had closed his eyes and thrown his head back in pleasure when you had sped up your movements on his dick.
“God, Y/N, that feels so fucking good.”
Namjoon said letting out a sharp breath when you grazed his tip another time. Keeping up the pace Namjoon had set pushing in and out of your wetness he soon added a second finger. You whined at the delicious feeling and started speeding up jerking off Namjoon. When you felt the movements of his fingers getting unsteady you stopped only for Namjoon to shoot you a questioning look.
“Don’t give me that face. I don’t want you to finish now when the real fun hasn’t even started yet.”
You said and raised one of your eyebrows teasingly.
“But I don’t have any condoms with me. Do you?”
“Don’t worry, I’m on birth control, don’t you remember?”
“So, you are sure you want this?”
“Jesus, Namjoon, just fuck me already.”
You laughed, a little desperate by now.
Namjoon let out a low growl, your words being music in his ears. He moved his body back up to lay down next to you and involved you in another steaming kiss. Namjoon grabbed you by your waist and helped you get up. Straddling him, you sat on top of him and bowed down to kiss him again. He lifted your hips just a bit so he could position himself properly. With a last look into your eyes he lowered you down letting himself enter you slowly. You gasped at the wonderful sensation.
When Namjoon had pushed his length completely into you he held still for a moment to let you get accustomed to his size before he started moving your hips back and forth. When you began moving your hips yourself, with your hands placed on his chest for support, Namjoon moved his hands from your hips to your chest. Setting a steady pace, you began riding Namjoon, totally lost in the pleasure and Namjoon thought he had never seen you look more beautiful. He continued to massage your breasts and pinch your nipples occasionally which caused you to feel the familiar knot form in your stomach.
“Fuck, Joon, I’m close.”
You gasped out between moans and dug your nails into his chest. Namjoon felt himself near his orgasm as well but he was determined to finish second. He held onto your hips again and lifted you just a bit so he could thrust his hips into you from below giving you the chance to let yourself go completely.
“Don’t hold back, baby. I want you to come all over my dick.”
These words combined with Namjoon thrusting into you was enough to send you over the edge. Letting the waves of hot pleasure roll over you, you came undone moaning Namjoon’s name. Seeing your face of pure ecstasy and hearing his name come out of your mouth did it for Namjoon and he let his orgasm overwhelm him.
Panting, you both came down from your orgasms. You let Namjoon’s dick slide out of you so you could lay down again besides him. Smiling at each other like complete idiots you tried to catch your breath.
“I can’t believe it took so long for this to happen.”
“Well. I didn’t think it would happen at all. I thought you’d never see me as more than a friend.”
Namjoon responded and you looked at him in disbelief.
“Are you serious?? Kim Namjoon, you might be a genius on paper but when it comes to flirting you suddenly lose all ability to think.”
You laughed and Namjoon joined you.
You noticed the tiredness starting to set in again so you cuddled up to Namjoon and closed your eyes. You felt Namjoon place a kiss on your forehead then drifted away with Namjoon falling asleep soon after.
In the morning, you woke up from the blinding sunlight flooding the tent and heating it up even further. With your eyes still closed, you went over the events of the previous night smiling to yourself. When you opened them, you stared into the brown eyes of Namjoon.
“Morning sleepyhead.”
Namjoon said and scrunched up his nose when you poked him in the stomach.
“You know it’s creepy to watch people sleep?”
“I’m sure you can make an exception?”
“Hmm, kiss me and I might think about it.”
You grinned and Namjoon happily did as told. Since the morning sun made it almost unbearable to stay inside the tent any longer, the two of you got dressed and you tied your dishevelled hair up into what you hoped would look like an intentionally messy bun. When you crawled out of the tent you saw Hobi, Jin and Yoongi already sitting around the fireplace having some sandwiches for breakfast. Upon joining the others, Namjoon and you were greeted with knowing looks.
“Ah, finally, the two night owls grace us with their presence.”
Hobi said jokingly.
“Did you sleep well?”
Yoongi asked with a cheeky smile while raising his eyebrows.
“Yeah, we somehow all woke up because of some suspicious noises in the middle of the night. You don’t think you know where they came from, by any chance?”
Jin continued amused.
Namjoon tried not to make eye contact with them and instead preceded to scratch himself at the back of his head.
“Ah come on, now you’re being shy? Last night you didn’t bother if someone could hear us.”
You said and slightly bumped Namjoon in the side with your elbow, earning laughter from the other boys.
“It’s still embarrassing...”
Namjoon mumbled but relaxed himself and grabbed one of the sandwiches Jin had held in his direction handing you the other one.
When Namjoon placed a quick kiss on your cheek before taking a bite off his sandwich you thought that this year’s camping trip was definitely going to be your favourite so far and the fun had just started.

Here's another round of "these would be head canons except it's canon" or "random ideas I had and wrote down and I'm posting them to keep track of all my thoughts"
-
Sofia always gets a little nervous when walking up or down stairs, she's terrified to fall, unfortunately her room is upstairs, and no one knows of this fear
Pond has submechanaphobia (the fear of underwater objects)
Ponds younger sibling Brook has "nicknames" for her and her friends.
"Pon," "Avey," "Memma," "Fia," "Cememine," and the calls both the twins "Anby-n-Anby"
Pond can size shift in a way, being able to be small enough to fit in a glass, or be as big as a lake, she can change her size shape and form under the right conditions, but prefers not to
Andie doesn't swim- it's not that she doesn't know how, she just doesn't like getting wet, and she doesn't like swimsuits
Avery gets bored and thinks about random stuff a lot
The twins have done that cat nose boop to their friends, they were all touched by the sentiment, except for Avery who had to have it explained to her, then she happy-cried about it
Andie and Andy snuggle like actual cats do, often purring as they sleep
Andie is the older and more assertive twin
Every time Andie gets deadnamed Emma looms over the person with an angry look and just says "Her name is Andie." In a dead serious tone. It doesn't happen as often anymore, but I like to think after they run in terror, Emma checks to see if Andie is okay, then needs to be reassured that she's not actually that scary
Sometimes the others can't understand Avery due to her accent, to everyone else it's kinda funny, (though Emma does try REALLY hard to understand), but Avery gets kinda mad, especially if it's important or if she's already upset. Shes especially hard to understand if she's upset/panicking, it kind of sounds like gibberish at that point. That's usually when she gets pancaked by Em.
When Emma first met Sofia she PANICKED cause she had no idea what a dullahan was. Emma just started screaming and panicking, until Clementine and Avery calmed her down and slowly explained that she was fine, that she's supposed to have her head off. Emma didn't completely get it at first, but she's slowly adjusted to it and she understands it now, but then she was so scared. She's really really embarrassed by it, and feels bad about it, and Sofia was scared of her too, so it was just really awkward at first. They're cool now, but at first they wanted to run away from each other upon seeing the other
Avery doesn't like jewelry- it's too much sensory wise, she doesn't like the feel of rings, bracelets, or necklaces, and she can't wear earrings, they won't pierce through her scales
Avery absent mindedly lays on her stomach and is always wearing something that covers her stomach- she doesn't realize it, but it's a survival instinct, as her stomach is one of her biggest weak points. She's almost physically incapable of lying on her back, she can only do it when she's in a safe calm environment where she feels she can't be hurt. But again, this all happens subconsciously, she doesn't notice that she's doing it. Her other huge weak point is her tail, it's important to her balance, and it's directly connected to her spine, so should anything happen to her tail, it could be life or death. This one she is aware of, but there are other reasons she doesn't like people touching her tail in addition to the danger it puts her in. It's uncomfortable for her, it's hers and it's weird to her if you touch it. It's uncomfortable on a couple of levels, it feels uncomfortable and is literally uncomfortable, leave her tail alone. The only exception to this is Emma, and only because it can't always be helped, she might touch her tail some when she sits on her hand. But Emma tries to touch is as little as possible, as she knows how bad it bothers her. (also Avery can lay on her back in Emma's pocket)
Sapphire has a Scottish accent- that's where Avery got it from
Emma and Avery do eventually become a couple, they're just anxious and beat around the bush about it for a while. They're too nervous to tell each other, they're worried about rejection, ruining their friendship, and being good enough for the other. Once they're dating it doesn't change much, except they do call hanging out with each other dates and occasionally do couple things (and Avery does kiss her at one point, which Emma gets all flustered about)
Andie and Andy are identical twins
Andies enchanted flute can implant suggestions into people's minds, and she has the ability to talk to/understand feral animals, this is all she can do because she doesn't want to put in the effort to learning more, and 90% of the time she forgets she can do either
They all have a favorite ice cream flavor!
Avery - Moon berry ice cream with chunks of hot pepper and hot fudge on top
Emma - Chocolate with fudge chunks and chocolate syrup on top
Sofia - Vanilla
Clementine - Coffee flavored ice cream with chocolate syrup and marshmallows
Andie - Neapolitan, preferably in a sundae
Andy - Strawberry with strawberry syrup and when possible, strawberries on top
Andie is secretly scared of balloons
Emma's shoes are slip ons
Andie gets vocal training to sound more feminine, Andy pays for the classes out of his allowance
Emma's house has small platforms and walkways for beans. One of these elevated walk ways leads into Emma's room, where there's a small cubby hole that's a make shift room for beans. Emma set it up for Avery to give her some space when she comes over, she has a big family, and everyone in the family is big, and they all want Averys attention- it can be a bit much. When Avery is in the small room she's officially off limits, with Emma being close by to ward off her siblings. Emma worries about her small friends safety, and sanity, and tries to make accommodations for her, both with her size and her needs.
Averys stims/ticks are: Hand flapping, tail wagging, she has a pressure stim that helps her calm down, her feet claws dig at the ground absent mindedly, her leg bounces when she sits, she pulls on her hair, ocassionally grunts and/or whines, will scream at the top of her lungs when she's pushed past her limit, and rarely, but sometimes she randomly twitches/flinches, and hates when people point it out, like, she's not spasming on purpose, you don't have to be a jerk about it... Emma doesn't stand for it either, so people will shut up about it quickly. Avery doesn't have anything diagnosed, but it's very possible that she has adhd, a sensory processing disorder, an anxiety disorder, and/or is somewhere on the spectrum. I'm not going to officially diagnose her with anything, most of these things are based off myself, and I feel that they also apply to her. These seem very in character, Avery is impulsive, can't sit still, does things without thinking/ not realizing she's doing it, she can't stand certain feelings/sensations/ textures/ tastes, etc., she panics kind of easily, and it escalates quickly, she has several stims/ticks that she uses for basically every emotion, she likes to enclose herself in comfortable small spaces, she has certain people she goes to for comfort, this is all canon already, I've discussed most of it before, I just thought I'd try to list it all out for my own reference
In Averys particular subspecies, there's no way to tell what the sex of the draconic is before it hatches. Her parents debated on a while about various male/female names, but they didn't want to keep referring to the egg as "the egg," or "the baby," as they didn't just think of the egg as an object, so they decided wanted on a gender neutral name for the egg so it could work for either, eventually deciding on Avery
Emma has anxiety about accidentally hurting her small friends, sometimes causing nightmares and makes her want to distance herself from them
Emma doesn't like being upside down (she learned this when she accidentally shrunk herself down to borrower size and Avery accidentally picked her up upside down in a panic)
After buying new clothes, Sofia often sets her head on her bed then does a small fashion show to see how it looks on her- she finds it's one of the few benefits of being a dullahan
Clementine LOVES mind puzzles and being able to problem solve, anything that poses a challenge excites her
Sofia often carries her pet snake on her shoulders, wearing her ball python as a boa
Avery loves sour candy, Emma prefers chocolate, Clementine likes m&ms and small candies that can be eaten while studying, also she considers grass and raisins a candy, something that is a debate amongst her friends, Sofia likes gummies, Andie likes candy bars, and Andy likes hard candies, Pond doesn't eat, so she can't eat candy, but would absolutely love chocolate covered almonds if she could taste them
Pond can do impressions- she often likes to mimic Avery and Andie because she finds accents funny, for some reason? She doesn't really know what it is about them, she just finds them hilarious
Emma is determined to find a way to hug Pond, she will hug water, she'll figure it out someday...
Out of all their friends, Emma only trusts herself to help Avery when she really needs it. It's not that she doesn't trust anyone else, it's just that, well, she doesn't think her friends can handle it. Emma's little brother Aaron has a lot of the same struggles as Avery, so Emma's a little more knowledgeable and understanding than the others. Not to say that the others aren't understanding, but they're often confused or flustered or even scared of Averys behavior sometimes, whereas Emma sees her struggling and attempts to help. The others can't do much most of the time, whereas Emma can help her out by giving her a small squish to help her decompress, put her in her pocket when she needs to be alone, she's scared, upset, tired, etc.,and knows how to talk to her to help her calm down, and she's good at figuring out what it is that she needs/wants when she gets too elevated and is panicking and/or shutting down

Chapter 15
“-and he’s lived on Mara since then.” Madison finished, Florès humming and nodding in acknowledgment. The younger girl was currently reading the files about the Titans as the mechanic tinkered away on the new model for the ORCA.
It’s size was between the original prototype and the smaller one he had given Emma. This one was supposed to have a wider range of available sounds than just the options to make a Titan stand down or provoke them to a fight. “Damn, that’s a sucky backstory. And you’re telling me Rodan jumping in a volcano in an effort to be with his wife in death may be related to why he can live in one?”
“Yeah. I mean, Mothra can reincarnate.” Madison said with a shrug. “Magic that allowed someone to survive lava doesn’t seem that far-fetched.”
“Magic doesn’t exist.” Florès said, shaking his head as he got up from his chair, walking to the coffee machine and mini-fridge he kept in his office. “It’s just science no one has figured out yet. You want any snack?”
“Chocolate. And how would you explain reincarnation then, uh? Or Isla de Mara just... vanishing without a trace?”
Florès seemed to think for a moment. “Either Mothra is actually a really long family line of moth Titans who leave notes to each other in order to pull the longest scam in history- catch,” He threw a kit-kat at Madison. “-or the theory of genetic memory is actually right. As for Mara, I dunno. Probably something with physics...”
“What would you do if you learned magic was actually a whole science in itself?” Madison asked as she opened the candy. “Would you be mad?”
“I would be mad, yes. What about the last ones?” He asked as he started the coffee machine.
“Alright, so... Ghidorah...” Madison started. “There’s three of them, but we don’t have records of their actual names. But we do have nicknames: One who is Many, Golden Demise, Death Song of Three Storms... wow, there’s a lot.”
“Just give me facts, like with the others- powers, known relationship with other Titans, current whereabouts, and whatever backstory Dr. Chen scrounged up.”
“Alright, so: last seen near Mara, and disappeared at about the same as the Island. Everyone seems to hate them, and the feeling is mutual.” Madison turned to look at Florès, breaking her kit-kat up.
“What about their powers?” Florès asked, pouring himself a cup and coming closer.
“Uh... bio-electrical, energy draining, meteokinesis, flight of unknown nature, suspected to have a high level of telepathy, independency from oxygen...” Madison listed off.
Florès nodded, taking his seat again. “Is it noted somewhere why he doesn’t need oxygen. Like, are they deep-sea weirdos, or something?”
“... Look in the opposite direction.”
“What do you mean, look in the opposite direc- no.”
“... yeah... it says in the ‘myth’ section that they fell from the stars...”
“No no no no no no no- we’re dealing with fucking aliens!?” Madison nodded. “¡Qué cojones...!” Florès snapped, slamming his cup on his desk. His attention then snapped at the unfinished ORCA. “I need to finish this.”
“Most of the myths they’re in also all portray them as malevolent.” Madison added. “Like, ‘inspiration for the Christian Devil’ malevolent.”
“Mmm. Don’t like that.”
“What, you’re Christian?”
“Raised catholic, yeah.” Madison eyebrows shot up to her forehead. “Comes with the territory when you grow up in Venezuela. But I doubt these guys fell from grace, or anything.”
Madison hummed, going back to looking at the computer screen, even if she wasn’t reading anymore. “I talked to one of them, you know?”
“Did you?” She nodded. “How?”
“I... one of them was able to get outside of his body.” Madison started, Florès nodding and taking a sip from his cup. “And he talked to me. Brought me to mom when she came to get me in Antartica. And... told me he and his brothers just wanted to be free.” She buried her face in her hands. “I should’ve trust my instincts, should’ve known he was lying...”
“Well, you’re twelve.” Florès noted, patting Madison on the shoulder. “You can’t know everything. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Plus, you’re not the one who freed him now.” He then turned back toward the ORCA. “If I had been in your mother’s position, I would’ve done the same. And I can guarantee you that your mother would’ve still saved you if she knew all that stuff. So stop blaming yourself for getting kidnapped, alright Russellita?”
“Alright.”
-
Oh, that rock he was laying on was comfy.
Rodan never wanted to get up, curling up a bit even as he finally opened his eyes. The sun had risen a while ago, indicating he had slept in. Which made sense, seeing as he had stayed up talking and star watching with Ghidorah, who had been... surprisingly nice.  They just talked about places they remembered seeing beyond the world Rodan knew, pointing at locations in the sky when it turned dark.
Now that it was locked away from reality, the night sky had gained it’s stars back. He used to think that Ghidorah were vengeful souls back from the dead, but he supposed that stars being a map of the world beyond their own made just as much sense as them being the imprint left by the departed.
Nevertheless, the scenery this morning was still very pretty. With the sun reflecting in the water with thousand of sparkles and illuminating the golden strands of hair around him, it was as if light was bouncing off of everything.
Wait a minute...
Rodan opened his eyes more fully, looked up, and realized with horror that he was laying in Ichi Ghidorah’s lap, who had his hair undone for once and forming a curtain around him. “Good morning, sleepyhead.”
Rodan screeched, jumping to stand up and suddenly very awake, only to stumble and land on his ass. “How long have you been watching me!? And why was I sleeping on you!?”
“Since my brothers woke up a while ago. And you fell asleep while we were star watching last night. The ground didn’t look very comfortable, so I moved you.” Ichi answered, still sitting as he leaned toward Rodan, who looked around him with a panicked expression. “You asleep looked like you were agreeing...”
“Okay, don’t manhandle me when I’m unconscious. And where did those two go!?”
“Ni is exploring what’s left of the human settlement. San is looking for rocks.” Ichi answered coolly, hoping the little bird would calm down eventually.
For now, to no avail. “Why are they doing that!?”
“Ni wants to see if there’s any humans left. As for San, he just wants to find rocks.” There was a pause, Ichi debating whether or not he should open up a bit. “He will also inevitably smash one of these rocks on my head as revenge for telling him to do things, but that can’t be helped.”
“... there’s no humans left.” Rodan angrily muttered, finally taking his eyes off Ichi. “They all left some times before you came here, and those that didn’t were probably flung away when I fell for the humans’ bait.”
Ichi raised an eyebrow at that. “Bait?”
“Humans figured out how to create calls.” Rodan explained bitterly. “They used one to bait me into flying into your storm.”
Ichi chuckled. “Oh, we’d have found you either way. The whole reason we came here in the first place is because San wanted to see you.”
“Maybe, but I wouldn’t have had to fight off the three of you in the middle of a raging storm.” Rodan retorted, bringing his knees up to his chest.
Ichi simply shrugged, going into meditation. {Ni, there’s no humans left. They all left before we came here.}
[Are you sure?]
{The little bird told me they left.}
[You’re really just going to believe him?]
{What?}
[What if it’s a trick?]
{What would he get out of lying about that!?}
(Also, he’s telling the truth.)
[Hello, brother San. How do you know that?]
(Hi Ni! Humans have a really strong emotional presence despite being so small and stupid, so they’re really easy to spot. Along with Rodan, we’re the only ones here.)
{And you didn’t tell us anything for some reason because...?}
(I thought you guys already knew! I mean, I get Ni not noticing because he’s so bad at it- no offense-)
[None taken.]
(-but brother Ichi!? You should’ve noticed ages ago.)
{Okay then-}
[Brother San, we haven’t even been there for a full day yet.]
(You know what I mean.)
{You two-}
[Anyway, I think humans figured out electricity, and how to generate it.]
{What!? Are you su-} Ichi was snapped out of his thoughts as he felt something lean on his leg. He opened his eyes, looking down at Rodan. The smaller being was leaning his head on his thigh, eyes closed. Was he... was he sleeping?... no, just resting. {The both of you come back as fast as you can. Ni, bring back some evidence.}
(But-)
{That’s not negotiable, San.} Ichi ignored his brothers as he put his hands on Rodan. One under his back, and the other one under his knees.
Rodan opened his eyes, confused. “What are you- gah!” Ichi had lifted him, only to promptly set him down on his lap. He chuckled as Rodan’s face started glowing brightly, twirling a lock of red hair around his long fingers. “Wha- telling you not to manhandle me when I’m sleeping wasn’t code for ‘do it when I’m awake’-”
“Don’t move.” Ichi told him, fingers carding through long red hair and separating it. “How do you usually style it?”
“Uh... simple ponytail, and I use another twisted strand to keep it together.” Rodan explained hesitantly. He looked down as Ichi started humming a little tune to himself, taking a strand of hair right above his ear and braiding part of it.
“How high do you keep your hair?” Ichi asked Rodan, who hummed in confusion. “I know it’s not high like San’s, but it doesn’t seem to be at the base of your head either.”
“J- just do it however you want.” There was a pause were there was no movement, Rodan fidgeting. He then brought a hand to the back of his head, claws tapping the middle of the back of his skull. “It doesn’t immediately become a problem if it loosen up, that way.”
“You don’t have to be so shy, you know? Why don’t you tell me what happened to you while we were sleeping.” Rodan shrunk on himself at that. Ichi leaned down as the other started debating it to himself, taking the braid within his teeth before lifting a sleeve up. He tied off one of the short ribbons he usually kept for his hair.
“I... became the Fire Guardian.” Rodan finally admitted.
Ichi hummed, starting to gather hair for the ponytail, letting go of the braid in the process. “What happened to the last one? The bird with the colorful feathers... what was her name again?”
“Quetzalcoatl. And she... died. Out of control volcanic eruption, the smoke is what killed her.” Rodan’s voice had broken on that fourth word.
Ichi raised an eyebrow, tying the ponytail with the ribbon. “You two were close?” He was pretty sure the only people Rodan had been close to was Godzilla.
“We met after you guys got sealed.” Was the only context he offered.
“I see...” Better not push the subject for now less San’s plan gets ruined from trying to dig too deep too fast, but it would be interesting ammunitions for later. He tied the braid around the base the ponytail, passing whatever wasn’t braided under it. “Done~”
Rodan hesitantly pat the braid on the side of his head, before shaking his head a bit. It seemed to be holding better than normal. He was about to thank Ichi, before remembering he was still sitting on his lap and jumping off with a yell. This time, he was able to right himself, and looked at him. Since the Ghidorah was sitting down, the two were at mostly the same eye level. He coughed hesitantly, the flush on his face lessening a bit. “Th- thank you.”
“You’re welcome, firebird.” Rodan’s flush immediately came back, his face almost glowing a golden color.
“Still better than ‘little bird’...” He muttered to himself. Rpdan than turned, facing away from Ichi. “I’m going to go for a short flight, ascertain the damage you and your brothers did. Do not try anything while I’m gone, got it?”
Ichi chuckled. “You’re cute when you’re trying to be intimidating. And understood. I’ll be right there when you come back.”
“... Good.” And with that, a strong breeze lifted an extremely flustered Rodan of the ground, leaving Ichi alone and in a good mood.
Said good mood immediately faded away as he felt something collide with his head. He looked to his right, raising an unimpressed eyebrow at Ni who had smashed something made out of wood on his head, “Really?”
“I wasn’t finished searching, and you were getting too touchy-feely.”
“Yes Ni, that’s the plan.” Ichi reminded his brother. “Get close to Rodan in order to manipulate him.”
“You were getting touchy-feely- here’s the human tech.” Ni dumped what was left of the pole on Ichi’s lap. The older brother took a look at it, frowning. Certainly what was needed to transport energy from one place to another, but not enough to not lose any in travel, and there was too many pieces.
“That doesn’t make sense.” Ichi grumbled. “This is too primitive compared to the flying machines they had. It should be more in line with it. The other civilizations we saw always had a consistent level of tech on the entirety of their planets, if not always in line with other civilizations.”
“Not all of them.” Ni reminded him. “You remember the Exif, right?”
“Of course I remember the Exif.” Ichi hissed. The first (and the last) civilization to ‘loan’ Ghidorah from the Xiliens for a period of time that could be counted in years. In this case, for the upper class to intimidate the lower ones into believing their Gods had come to smite anyone who would dare oppose them. And since Gods were supposed to be immortal, they had stayed for several Exif centuries.
But then the Exif ended up believing their own lies, and upon San’s request, found a way to disconnect them from the Conductor. Enveloping their planet in an endless storm and watching it die had given Ghidorah such a rush they just knew that it’s what they had been taken away from their own world for.
“Not sharing everything in an equal manner between all seems like something they would do.” Ni commented. “And humans always lived in small, separated communities with a clear leader. Maybe it became more apparent as time went on? It goes very fast to them, after all.”
Ichi groaned, taking one last, distasteful at the components in front of him. “Still. There’s never that big of a gap in technology on singular planets. If they have figured out space travel, the furthest they would be able to go to is their moon.” A rock landed on the back of Ichi’s head. “Welcome back, San.”
The youngest brother sat down, giggling as Ni gave his own snort. His arms were full of rocks “Sorry, needed to get it out after you interrupted my search for cool rocks.”
“Did you find any cool rocks?”
“Not really...” San whined, handing the rocks to Ichi, who started looking them over. Most of them had the same hard quality as the ground. “You called us back before I could find good ones... oh! But I did find this!” Out of the tissue he usually draped himself with, San got out a glossy black stone that had a powdery, golden sheen to it.
Ni’s eyes widened by a fraction, making a grabby motion for it. When San shook his head, his face soured. “Why?”
“I want to give it to Rodan. Show of goodwill.” San explained. “By the way, where did he go?”
“For a flight. He wants to see how dead his island is.” Ichi answered off-handedly. “Are you sure that plan of yours is going to work? Fire bird has... quite the temper. He might not break if we tell him the humans were the ones who did this.”
“Someone angry at us but more at our target is still easier to use than someone who’s just angry at us.” San replied, before frowning. “Also, I thought he was  ‘little bird’?”
“’Fire bird’ sounds less insulting than ‘little bird’.” Ichi answered, shrugging. “Like you said, show of goodwill. That, and doing his hair.”
“... Brother San, give me that rock.”
“No, Ni!”
“It’s not for me. I want to be the one giving it to the fire bird.” Ni answered. Upon his brothers’ confused faces, he continued. “It’s easy for the both of you to pretend to be nice- oblivion, San is actually nice. It’s not for me. But the plan isn’t going to work well if it doesn’t seem like I’m at least trying to be nice. So?”
After a few seconds, Sa handed the stone to Ni, the message in his eyes obvious. Don’t screw this up.
We cannot screw this up.

A Moment of Reflection
Place: Directly After “A Gate Between” Word Count: 1,830 Rating: T Prompt For Quarantined Frans Weeks: Day 5 [Time]  Cross Posted to a03 here!
@qfransprompts
“where’s frisk?” Papyrus turned to look at Sans over his shoulder, a bony brow raised inquisitively as he slowly dried a plate. Was he honestly asking that? There was no other place Frisk could be other than the house.
“...CAN YOU NOT FIND HER?” He drawled slowly.
His older brother frowned up at him. “paps, if i could would i be asking?”
“TRUE ENOUGH. WHERE HAVE YOU LOOKED?” Sans let out a sigh as he listed off all the rooms including embarrassingly enough the bathroom. Papyrus frowned at that but didn’t prod as he looked out the kitchen window in thought.
“HAVE YOU TRIED THE GARDEN?” Sans’s eyelight shrunk in surprise as he glowered at himself. Why hadn’t he thought of that? Frisk might not have been ready to go exploring or anything but that didn’t mean she didn’t want fresh air or the like.
“thanks bro.” Paps hummed as he returned to doing the dishes, not giving his sibling a second glance as he lazily took a shortcut.
Frisk...felt tired.
She was enjoying watching the magical plants in front of her. Loving it when one would light up in a pulsing glow every time an insect would touch it’s petals to let out a silent melody of music she couldn’t fully place. Or when a red flower would erupt a tiny sprout of flame from its center similar to a candle when lit.
But the majesty in front of her was also a brutal reminder of the price she had paid to witness such things.
To be alive to do so.
Slowly she reached out to a lone blue flower situated to the side of the bed and brushed against it, marveling as Papyrus’s voice came through loud and clear. “BROTHER WOULD YOU STOP TALKING TO FLOWERS, YOU’RE GIVING THEM YOUR BAD HABITS.”
She snickered and played it again just as Sans appeared behind her.
He watched her silently as her face glowed with happiness, her knees tucked up beneath her chin just as she had done when she was younger and felt his soul give a twirl in his ribs. She looked so beautiful mesmerized by the echo flower.
But it was also a reminder of the simple joys she’d been denied.
“he says bad habits but i call them lessons in comedy.” Frisk jolted in place, her heart quickly leaping into her throat as she spun around, but just as quickly calming as she smiled up at the Seelie grinning at her.
“I’m still not used to your shortcuts.” He tried not to notice how small her smile had gone.
“sorry, didn’t mean to get the jump on you.” His wink was enough to earn a chuckle, one just as small as her expression but still clear enough that it warmed his bones. Slowly he walked closer and plopped nonchalantly on the ground next to her. It was cute how red her face turned at his closeness but he chose not to address it.
“checking out the flowers?” Frisk nodded.
“Yeah, I have been curious about them for a while now.” Sans’s sockets softened as he recalled how often she’d sit with him making flower crowns and rings as they spoke with each other, how excited she’d get when he told her stories of plant Seelie and the meaning their blooms usually told when speaking.
She hadn’t exactly brought up flowers or other conversations with him since she’d gotten there.
Sans missed it.
“want me to tell you about them?”
Frisk blinked as she looked over at him and she could only see a warmth in his gaze that made her cheeks sting as she recalled their kiss from a few nights ago. She suddenly felt shy but looking back at the mysterious plants in front of her she managed to nod again.
Sans chuckled. “which one first?”
He watched as she pointed towards one, it’s tone shifting in a gradient of white and purple light as it swayed in the light breeze around them.
Ah. He liked that one.
“that’s a flavor petal.” Frisk’s face scrunched up as she gave an adorable nose wiggle.
“Flavor petal?” Sans looked at the questionable tone and simply shrugged.
“it’s used in cooking a lot similar to parsley. when you eat a petal it lets you taste whatever food or drink your body is craving at the time. paps has had to pull my snoozing butt from the garden on occasion because of it.” Frisk snorted. She could picture that easily.
“Back home that type is called a Tritonia Crocata.” Sans hummed thoughtfully but his smile dropped as he noticed her eyes dull slightly. He didn’t fail to notice how soft spoken she went when she’d mentioned home.
So much guilt stirred in him.
“you’re homesick.” She didn’t deny it, only tucked her chin into her arms as she stared at the flower they’d been speaking about.
Sans tried to be tactful but he couldn’t think of a way other than to address the whole thing head on. He knew she forgave him, understood why he’d ignored her wishes and had manipulated her the way he had. Frisk might tell him all the time his honesty wasn’t that but he knew that was her being too kind and merciful.
That also didn’t mean there still wasn’t regret she felt for caving to him whisking her away.
“i’m sorry.” She looked at him in confusion before letting her shoulders slump as she realized what he was talking about.
“Sans--”
“i’m sorry.” He looked at her gently. “you can tell me for the rest of our lives there’s nothing to forgive but there is. and i’ll be honest i don’t regret having you here with me, just why it had to happen.”
His soul tightened painfully as she looked back at the flowers, a detachment he didn’t like and always hated seeing overcoming her features. It reminded him so much of those bad days she’d have.
Sans never wanted to be the reason for her to look like that.
“It’s...going to take time.” She looked at him again and for a brief moment he saw her younger form and felt himself taking the chance to offer her the comfort she’d so often denied him back when he’d been incapable of helping her.
“it may seem like it’ll never go away, like you can’t feel anything else but the pain.” The way he saw water bead in the corner of her eyes confirmed what he’d been thinking. Hesitantly he wrapped an arm around her and gently nudged her into his side.
Frisk at first tensed but slowly she relented and leaned into him and let out a shaky sigh as he ran his phalanges through her hair. The feeling of his textured phalanges running though her locks sent a pleasant warmth down to her toes and it made it surprisingly easier to breath.
He spoke in a lowered tone, near a whisper like she might fall apart if he was any louder.
“but it’ll get better. it’s fair to mourn the loss of your mortal life, but it’s not going to last forever frisk.” The sound of her name in his baritone soothed her.
“It feels...so heavy Sans. I’m happy to be with you, really...but it hurts to wonder what I’m missing…” He pressed a kiss to her brow and she turned red as a tomato. Still he ignored it again as he rested the side of his skull against the top of her head.
Frisk then noticed she’d been fully pulled into his lap, his legs stretched out on either side of her and his arms securely holding her as he continued to pet and twist her hair. There was a faint rumble, a barely concealed hum against her side where it rested against his ribs.
Was that...his magic?
She felt so safe, so protected being held so close as she was even as the contact sent her heart into a tizzy and made butterflies soar through her stomach. It might have been uncomfortable if others were around but she found she welcomed it with just the two of them for company.
Sans might have been a different being from her but she had never felt closer and more related to him in these rare moments. The rare moments that had gradually become more frequent since they’d confessed to each other.
“i know, i know what it’s like to miss the potential for something you’ll end up never having.” And she caught just how sad Sans sounded. Like he really did know what she felt. Before she could ask though he was shifting her to face him.
His hands framed her face and he lingered as he took in the smoothness of her skin and the pale shade of her lips, but more than anything still how bright her sun colored eyes were as he looked into them thought they were filled with sadness.
“eventually you’ll make friends though, experience new things and sights no one else will ever get the opportunity to have done.” His words sounded so passionate her ears burned. His sockets narrowed reassuringly as his smile lifted in one corner empathetically.
“make no mistake, a part of you will always carry that weight that currently suffocates you, but it’ll be so much easier to bear. and i’ll be here every step of the way to make sure it doesn’t crush you.” Frisk’s breath froze in her lungs as he pressed his forehead into hers and tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear.
She wanted so much to take his words and engrave them into her heart. She never wanted to forget them for even a moment. How did he manage to see to her very core and say exactly what it was she didn’t know she needed?
“...y’know i hate making promises, because a lot of the time they can’t be kept. you never know what life is going to throw your way. but for you? i promise. in time it’ll get better, and i’m going to love watching you shine every step of the way.” She sniffled and choked.
“D-did you just make a pun?”
Sans smirked. “how could i not? the sun’s staring into my sockets.”
Frisk couldn’t help it.
She let out a sob as her heart swelled and balled herself up against the skeletal Seelie as she shook.
Sans silently held her, not minding for a second how her tears wet his clothing or how her hands clenched and tugged against him where they rested on his chest. He knew this had been the very thing she’d always needed.
Someone in her corner and to support her.
Never again if he could help it would he let her go without that. This was a promise he refused to break come what may.
They had all the time in the world for him to prove that to her.

Humans are Space Orcs “Maximum Discomfort.”
Another addition to the little prison series I am doing. I don’t think this one has plaything too inflammatory in it, but it is still up to you weather you want to risk it.
Krill was trapped in a prison of fear, worst of all, he was trapped in a prison prison, a human prison, the most brutal species in the galaxy putting their own most brutal into close confines with no way out and no connection to the outside world. What was worse, this wasn’t even a licensed prison overseen by the UNSC or the GA, this was an outlier, a maximum security penitentiary on a border moon designed specifically to deal with the people that no one else wanted to. It was lawless, it was mad, and it was a great way to get yourself Killed.
After seeing his life flash before his eyes earlier, when confronted by one of the other prisoners, he now clutched desperately to the back of Commander Vir’s jumpsuit forever thankful to the human for his act of courage, in offering to fight the entire prison population to protect him, but Krill new the truth. Commander Vir was no alpha here, he wasn't the right kind of human, these ones were hardened, cold and calculating. The commander had the tendency to be juvenile naive and trusting at times.
He was going to have to bluff hard to survive, or neither of them were going to last a day.
Together they were dragged across the room and seated rather aggressively at the center of the human table . Adam grimaced visibly as he sat held fast by the large man from earlier who looked around the group of humans and made eye contact with each and every one of them, “Well everyone please welcome our newest guest, “Captain Jack.”
Adam looked up his confusion overriding his worry, “What?”
“You have an eyepatch and a peg leg, that makes you a pirate.”
“I mean, yeah, but if I Recall Captain Jack had both eyes AND both legs.”
The man’s smile fell brows falling, “Are you questioning my nickname choice.”
Adam shrunk back a bit, “I ur…. No sir….”
The man glowered at him and then began to laugh. The rest of the group followed suit, Krill shrank closer to Adam’s legs. It may have been laughter, but it definitely wasn’t the inviting kind, he chucked wiping tears from his eyes, “Sir ... ain't that quaint…. This little bastard thinks I’m a sir.”
More laughter.
Suddenly Adam felt himself jerked to his feet held at least an inch off the ground by the front of his jumpsuit staring the large man in the eyes, nose to nose, “Don’t call me, sir.”
“S-sorry s-si…. I mean yes…. Of course….. It's just a bad habit.” His composure from earlier was beginning to crack a little. Krill hid under the bench.
“What you army or something.”
“Yes…. yes. I have the tattoo to prove it.” That seemed to ease their curiosity and he was set down and ordered to show them. He did as he was told, pulling off the top layer of his jumpsuit to hang around his waist, and pull down the neck of his T-shirt to show the tattoo. There was a murmur from the group, “Aviation, so you can fly planes and shit?”
Adam let go, “Yes…. more like jets and shit….”
“You ever been in combat?” One of the men asked interested
Adam rubbed the back of his head glanced towards the Drev side of the room, made a decision and nodded, “Yes I…. I was deployed during the Drev war. The atmosphere on their planet doesn’t…. Exactly allow for much flying, so I was ground infantry during our last push.”
There was another murmur around the table.
“So you gotta kill you some of those battle bastards.” Andam jerked forward uncomfortably as he was slapped on the back, “Thank you for your service!”
“Wait….. Is that where you lost your leg and your eye.”
Adam swallowed, “Just the leg, the eye was an accident.”
There was a murmur of appreciation from around the table, “Hey, that mean you were involved in operation Steel Eye.” One of the men asked, and the rest of the group muttered in anticipation leaning forward. Adam scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
“I uh…. Well yes.”
There was an eruption of glee around the table and Adam was slammed by a wall of delighted hollering, laughing, and back patting by the group of men cheering him on for having crushed the Beatles, shown them their place, and so on.
“Alright, alright that changes things a bit. I hate using people’s names as you know, so I’m not going to let you keep yours, but I’m gonna come up with something better for you like Steel, short for Steel-Eye, I like that, it’s a good name, honorable. Wait till those big ugly beetles know who we got on our side.”
Adam went slightly pale glancing across the room. The largest Drev there was an almost 10 foot female with Vivid green carapace. She looked like she could have charged through a four foot steel wall, “or we…. Could not mention that.”
One of the guys next to hi laughed, “You’re a funny guy, Steel, you don’t have to worry about nothin’ we won’t let them touch you, not when you are such an esteemed addition to the human species.” Adam grimaced again as the table cheered. Krill hugged his leg, they were totally going to die.
“Tell us, aside from being a beetle killing badass, what else can you do, what are your talents. You see despite your service, no one just eases by here. What can you bring to the table.” There was a whole lot of learning going on in this group, and Krill could tell that the Commander wasn’t particularly happy about the situation….
“I uh…. Like what? I mean I can fly, but that’s not…. Useful here.”
“Nah, friend, we talkin bout stuff like drawing, steeling, fighting….” that seemed like a pretty varied list to Krill, and he couldn’t imagine how the first one went with anything.
“Ur ... uh, I can draw a little…. Not like shading or anything like that… but I can do outlines I guess ... ur -”
“And you can fight.” Someone prompted
Adam grimaced but was forced into a nod under the scrutiny of the other prisoners. He was grabbed around the shoulder and pulled in close, “Well there it is, our new tattoo artist.” The big man looked down at Adam, “he left us under….. Well a sheet, so you get his job now. Glad to have you on board.”
-
Adam was coming to learn that his original understanding of how prison worked was…. Completely wrong. Documentaries were generally the way to go, but even then those were not entirely accurate either. If anything movies romanticize prison, crazy how stupid that sentence was out of context, but really the only thing he might consider comedic or cinematic about the whole thing was The Boss’s use of nicknames…. And yes, that was his nickname. No one knew what he was really called, all they knew was that he was The Boss and should be treated as such. The other men Adam and Krill had met on the first day were his Lieutenants. The big dark man was Smiley, the handsome man was Fabio, and then the two little men were the Gemini boys
That first night Adam had been forced to eat the nastiest prison 'glop probably ever prepared in the history of humanity. Adam had almost thrown up on multiple occasions arguing that it wasn’t necessarily the taste, but the texture that was throwing him off. He had eventually given over the rest of his trey to Smiley who seemed to enjoy the glop. When the bell rang, the group of them were ushered into their containment units. Krill was forced to Separate from Adam, but luckily ended up in a sell with a terrified Tesraki who spent most of his time hidden under the bed.
Adam, on the other hand, walked into the cell to find the top bunk absolutely overwhelmed by a massive balding man with a greasy face and broken nose. He paused in the doorway grimacing as the man looked at him, but with a buzz, the doors slid shut behind him. They made eye contact for a very long moment and the other man drifted a lazy expression over him.
Adam felt his insides turn to mush, but he tried not to show any fear. Showing fear in a prison was like showing fear to a dog. Fear meant weakness, and weakness was a reason to attack. Instead he nodded stiffly, “Evening, guess this makes me your new roommate. What’s your name.”
The man eyed him, but didn’t answer.
“Adam eyed the bottom bunk, and the sagging bunk above it. He had no intention of lying down in that bed scene it seemed at any moment he was going to get crushed as the top bunk fell. He glanced around the room and was sickened. It was maybe ten feet long and seven feet wide with an open toilet in one corner and a sink next to that. Otherwise there were no other furnishings.
Truth be told he really had to pee, but he was coming to find out quickly that he had a serious issue doing that when other people were present. Plus the boogeyman was still staring at him. With a sick sigh and a churning stomach, Adam sunk to the floor and leaned his head against the bars looking out into the hall which had gone dark. A few flashlights swiped here and there from the prison guards on patrol, but otherwise there was no movement. Listening to the sounds, he caught the soft mutter of voices, and a few other unsavory sounds, but he tried not to think about them too much. Glancing towards the top bunk he found a pair of eyes still glittering in the darkness.
He took a deep breath through the nose to calm himself.
It didn’t help. In fact it took all he had not to break down into tears and start whimpering for his mom to come save him. Damn he was such a bitch. Instead he leaned his head against the bars and took a few more deep breaths. He wished Sunny were here, if she was here they would already be out, shed have bent the bars with her bare hands and kicked everyone’s ass that tried to get in her way. Sure he wanted nothing more in the world to be a total badass, but where he pretended, she really was.
That night was probably the worst night of his life, and that included his multiple nights of PTSD induced fear right after the war. He was cold, scared, uncomfortable, and trying very very hard to block out the noises coming from the other side of the room. He didn’t know what they were, and he didn’t want to find out they could have been innocuous, but they could have totally not been, plus he needed to pee like a racehorse, but the toilets were metal, so that totally wasn’t an option. He rested his head against his knees and, SOMEHOW, by the grace of deity was able to fall asleep.
He woke up the next morning to kidney pain, and the rattling sound of the doors as they beeped open. He hit the cold stone floor of the hallway with a grunt and a curse as the other prisoners began peering out into the light rubbing their eyes and grumbling.
A shadow darkened the space above him, and Commander Vir looked up to find the Boss standing over him with a bit of a grin, “Rough night?”
He cursed and scrambled to his feet adjusting himself as the boogeyman pushed past him out the door. Adam followed the man with nervous eyes, but  hand clapped him on the back, “Oh don’t worry about grunt, he's a gentle giant really, kind of quiet, but wouldn’t hurt anyone.”
Adam snorted and before he could censor himself, “I wasn’t worried about him, I was worried about the bunk snapping and crushing me in my sleep.”
Luckily the boss burst into fits of raucous laughter, “Didn’t know you had such an acerbic tongue. I expect you down in the yard in ten, don’t be late.” The man let him go, and adam quickly rushed back into the room for the most relieving moment of his adult life before walking back out and picking up Krill a few cells over. The Vrul seemed to have had a better night floating in a corner while his roommate hid under the bed. Together they made a quick, and hopefully unnoticed exit down the stairs and onto the floor. In an almost panic, Adam found his way into the courtyard at the center of the jail where the humans had claimed a rather dodgy set of workout equipment
“There you are Steel, was just beginning to worry you had gotten lost .” The men about the yard chuckled, and Adam was forced to sit on the edge of a bench handed a strange contraption and a little well of inc, “Let’s see what you can do, Kid.”
Adam blinked and stared at the strange contraption, “The hell is this.”
“A tattoo machine, what the hell else would it be.”
Adam looked up, “Looks like something pulled out of a dumpster. Or the tetanus machine.”
The prisoners folded their arms displeased.
Adam crossed his arms, “I get you guys don’t exactly have anything to work with, but I am not going to work with that till it’s proven sterile. I am not getting blamed for someone’s death or infection, and AND I at least need a marker or something, so I can do an outline before I start. I don’t produce shit. Also someone is going to have to convince Grunt to sleep on the bottom bunk because I am NOT doing that shit again.”
Lucky for him the prisoners seemed at least amused by his demands, and were ordered off to find equipment. Adam tasked Krill with a way to sterilize the equipment, which Krill determined was highly unlikely but was forced to work with what they had. However, once the prisoners learned that Krill had medical training, He was suddenly accepted as a human, and then forced to look at everything from blistered feet to weeping sores. This place was disgusting, and he nervously glanced at Adam, who was now sitting on the bench top half of his jumpsuit tied around his waist, T shirt exposed trying to figure out how the hell to use the improvised machine, which required a rather steep learning curve.
Both of them were wildly out of their depth krill having gone from being the chief medical officer of a high tech floating space hospital in which he had requisitioned all the latest medical equipment one could hope for to doing back alley physicals on human convicts in a maximum security prison yard, while Adam had descended from Fleet Commander of the UNSC, golden boy of the GA, and most influential human in the galaxy to doing half rate prison tattoos with no more than a paperclip and improvised inc on another man’s exposed thigh.
From what Adam seemed to think, they should at least ask for favors in exchange for their services. Perhaps that way they could make themselves invaluable enough that no one would be able to question their use, or their importance

What I thought about every episode of The Owl House Season 1 (Part 2/2)
Part two, sukers! Let’s do this. Click here to read part one.
“Senses and Insensitivity”: The B-plot in this episode is outstanding. It shows the audience more about Eda and Lilith's love for each other as sisters, which actually gets a lot more heartbreaking, given what happens in "Agony of a Witch." I loved every minute of it...which is why it makes it weird that it's just the B-plot. Because while the main story is ok, I could do without it. It makes King look like a jerk, and in no way does it feel like he means it when he apologizes. Plus, the fact that Luz and King get saved by Dana's self-insert and don't even do anything to stop Piniet just doesn't sit right with me. Although, I do find the jokes about fandom mentality to be pretty funny. If it wasn't for Eda's storyline with Lilith, "Senses and Insensitivity" might just be a C+ of an episode. As is, I'll be kind enough to give it a B-.
“Adventures in the Elements'': And here it is. The episode that everyone saw months beforehand because some jackhole decided to leak it to the internet. And what an episode it is. We get some great mentor/motherly moments from Eda. Some perfect course correction from Ed and Em going from unlikable antagonists to decent supporting characters. Having Luz learn a second spell, and having the growth between her and Amity's relationship. And a semi-enjoyable B-plot with King and an army of stuffed animals (which is just as funny as it sounds). My problem? Pacing. While King's subplot about an army of stuffed animals is fun, I feel like more time should have been dedicated to Luz getting trained by Eda. That way, it’ll feel natural to see as Luz reaches her breaking point due to going nowhere with Eda's training, which would feel justified rather than making Luz come across as kind of whiney in the episode (at least to me, she does). Another issue I have is with how Luz and Amity's relationship is presented in this episode. It genuinely feels like we skipped an episode because Amity went from "thinking about it" to getting distracted by waving at her bestie. Now keep in mind, I'm the first one to say "who cares" when people bring up the poor pacing in Luz and Amity's relationship due to Disney having little to nothing in terms of LGBTQ+ representation in children's animation. But the thing is, their relationship feels more properly paced in future episodes, but it's not the case here. So it's gonna have to be another B- in that regard.
(And seriously, don't ever leak episodes from a show, even if it's your favorite. Because not only does it ruin the experience for fans who want to support it the right way, but it also hurts the show itself. Because if people stop watching episodes, guess what? They'll stop making them. And nobody wants that.)
“The First Day”: Is it odd that I like an episode that's clearly not great? Because there's so much about "The First Day" that I enjoy. I like the entirety of the detention track and the fact that they're not typical troublemakers. I like the message about how it's unfair to force children to learn something they're not interested in because it's for a "better education." And I would frickin' take a bullet for Puddles. Unfortunately, this episode has some of the worst pacing in the series. Let's look at what this episode has to accomplish: It has to force Luz into a track and explain why it's a poor fit for her. It has to have Luz be interested in another track and get in trouble due to being too curious. It has to establish a connection between Luz and the detention track so they can have a heartbreaking third-act breakup. It has to set up, then introduce, a monster that will try to destroy Hexide. And finally, defeating the creature has to tie into why it's a good idea for students to mix tracks. That is a lot to do in under twenty-two minutes, and it makes the episode feels like it’s on fast foward at times. I'd say the solution would be to cut King's substitute teacher subplot (which only has value with one good joke), but that would only give "The First Day" a couple of extra seconds. So, really, the only way to "fix" the episode is to probably give it a few minutes by making it a forty-five-minute special. I'm sure fans wouldn't mind that. They love Luz and her journey enough that I'm sure they would be more than ok to see a more lengthy experience through the halls of Hexide. But that's not what we got, so it's gonna have to be a D+ episode. I don't hate it, but I don't blame others who do.
“Really Small Problems”: "Ugh, it's the cliche--" WE'VE! BEEN! OVER THIS! Does this episode have a cliche storyline? Yes. Is this pretty much the first filler episode of the series? Of course. But is it still entertaining? Without a doubt. There are great jokes, adorable moments with Luz and King's friendship, and little moments that I love. Like the fact that it was an accident that King shrunk Willow and Gus, and how Luz treated the situation calmly and rationally instead of blowing her stack. "Really Small Problems" may not be high up on my favorites list, but it's at least a fun B episode that was well worth a single viewing.
“Understanding Willow”: You wanna know what impresses me the most about The Owl House? The fact that Dana and her writers knew what the fans exactly want before they even started asking for it. The fans wanted to know what happened between Willow and Amity, and so the staff showed us. Fans wanted to see what Mr. and Mrs. Blight are really like, and the staff showed us. Fans wanted a Luz and Amity centric adventure, and the staff gave it to us. And because they've been working on the first season long before fan input started coming out, that means that we were going to get what we want before even having to ask. Most shows would save content in "Understanding Willow" for a second and even third season, so it amazes me that the writers waste no time in giving us the good stuff. Add that with a great "I'm sorry" speech from Amity, cute moments between her and Luz, Luz being an understanding friend, and Eda's bell dance, and you've got yourself an A+ of an episode.
As I said, I've already reviewed the last four episodes. But if you're interested in what I have to say, here are the condensed versions of my thoughts. Click the episode titles if you want to see the full review:
“Enchanted Grom Fright”: Speaking of giving the fans what they want, the fans have been obsessed over Lumity damn near since the beginning, myself included. So now you're gonna give us a prom episode filled with flirting in the hallway, a dope dance sequence, and the reveal that Amity has a crush on Luz? All while showing more of Luz's relationship with her mother and the fear Luz has of telling Camila the truth?! Then consider this an A+ episode that might just be a crucial moment in Disney's history!
“Wing it Like Witches”: This is a fantastic episode. And no, it's not because of Amity's gay panic attacks towards Luz...ok, it's partially because of that. But it's also because this episode shows how far characters come developmental wise. Willow became more confident, and Amity is actually part of the group now. It all comes together when the most developed characters team up against one who'll most likely get little development. It's a solid A of an episode that always leaves me smiling when I watch it.
“Agony of a Witch”: Yup. The single image of Luz crying is still enough to tear me up inside. And man, what an episode. The tension, the drama, the REVEAL! Lilith admitting she cursed Eda still shocks me because it could not have been farther from what I expected. Especially given the sisterly bond that we've seen in past episodes. So yeah, this is another A+ for sure.
“Young Blood, Old Souls”: I've heard some people say that the season finale is underwhelming, and I think I know why? You see, this has what I like to call Infinity War to Endgame syndrome. Part one does a great job of setting up the tension and stakes, that part two seems to pale in comparison in an attempt to relieve some of that tension. Because since part one ended, people have been hyping themselves up for part two to be such an epic conclusion that it couldn't have completely lived up to the ridiculously high standards. It's the same reason why I never felt disappointed with either Avengers: Endgame or "Young Blood, Old Souls." I had high expectations, sure, but I also reminded myself that there is a chance that either might be unenjoyable. And guess what? I consider Avengers: Endgame an A+ movie and "Young Blood, Old Souls" an A+ episode. Is either story perfect? No, but here's the thing. I could list all the nitpicks I have, or I could keep my big mouth shut and just enjoy it for the parts that are perfect.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And that's it! That's what I think about every single episode of The Owl House so far. As for my thoughts on the show itself, I think it's incredible. It has a nice balance of comedy and drama with specific episodes, has an intriguing story, and includes some of the best representation that Disney has had in decades. But that doesn't mean the show is perfect. Pacing can be a bit off at times, some B-plots are just unnecessary to pad out the time, and not every joke can land. But to be fair, this is season one. Dana Terrace and her crew have more than enough time to polish out the rough parts for what is hoped to be a better season two. And I still can’t to see what they have in store for us.

Internship Chapter 3: Day 1 - Emira
Author Note: It’s possible that the Illusion Coven is led by two people, but I think there’s only one coven leader. Canon might prove me wrong someday.
First Chapter Previous Chapter
________________________________________________________
Emira glanced down at her map, making sure she was in the right place. She marked the location of the Illusion Coven before she left so that she wouldn’t get lost. She had decided to walk, since it would only take about 15 minutes and her access to other modes of transportation were quite limited.
Emira decided to wear her casual clothes, since she didn’t want to look like a student at her internship. She wanted to be taken seriously.
Before she left, her mother said to give her regards to the coven leader. She placed heavy emphasis on the word regards, but Emira knew better than to ask for clarification. She just agreed to do so, and then set out on her way.
She thought about the internship while she walked. She felt mostly neutral about the assignment, not really sure what it would bring. While she had been hoping for the Emperor’s Coven, she did love doing illusion magic. This could be a good chance to learn some new spells and, as her mother often put it, do some networking. She still wasn’t sure what that meant.
Now she stood in front of the building she had marked, double checking that she made it to the right place. The building was two stories tall, with windows every five feet or so. Beige paint covered the external walls. It looked fairly ordinary, but Emira could feel a hint of residual magic in the air.
The front door had a neon flashing sign that said ‘OPEN’ in bright green letters. That was where Emira entered, taking her first official steps into the coven.
Inside, there was a small lobby like room. It had a couch and a few chairs to one side with a set of large doors behind them, and a counter on the other. The walls were fairly muted in color, but had flashes of bright accents. Behind the counter sat a male witch with eyes cast towards the door. He was the only witch in the lobby, and he smiled slightly when Emira looked his way.
“Welcome to the Illusion Coven.” He said as Emira approached his desk, sitting up straight in his chair. “How may I be of assistance?” He spoke politely, in an even tone. From the question, he seemed to think she was a customer. He must’ve been a secretary of some kind.
“I’m the new intern.” Emira replied, stopping in front of the counter. She could see a binder on the table, full of lines of text. “Emira Blight.” She added, since there would likely be more than one intern from Hexside coming to the coven today.
The witch looked down at his binder for a moment, then his eyes snapped up. “Oh, yes that starts today doesn’t it.” His smile grew into a grin as he jumped out of his chair. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Blight.” Emira took a half step back from the counter, his  sudden enthusiasm putting her off slightly.
“Same to you.” Emira kept her response concise and polite.
The coven member was still grinning as he stepped around his desk. “The coven leader is expecting you, if you’ll follow me.” He gestured towards a back door, and when Emira nodded he started walking that way. She followed after him as instructed, passing through a door labeled ‘employees only’.
On the other side was a series of magically lit hallways that were lined with doors. The magic lights caught Emira’s eye; she wondered if they could be manipulated with an illusion spell. That would be a great way to prank witches passing through this hallway. Perhaps by making them flicker or change colors, she had to think about it.
The coven member led Emira through a few turns, then stopped at a door that was larger than the rest. The doorknob had a gold colored plating on it, which stood out from the others as well.
The coven member knocked twice on the door and received a call of “Come in!” from inside. He pulled the door open and gestured for Emira to enter.
Emira thanked him as she moved past, resisting the urge to look back as the door shut with an audible click behind her. Instead she glanced around the office. The two side walls were lined with bookshelves, full of what looked to be illusion magic books. Along the back wall trophies and awards were displayed, all for magic competitions and performances.
The head of the Illusion Coven sat behind a large desk in the middle of the room. Emira had met him a few times before, but hadn’t spent much time speaking with him.
“Why, if it isn’t Emira Blight.” The coven leader said, drawing Emira’s wandering eyes to him. He was smiling broadly, showing a few too many teeth to be natural. “When I heard you would be joining us for the internship, I was absolutely thrilled.” Interesting that he had said her full name.
“I’m happy to be here.” Emira replied, only half lying. It would be rude to say she wanted to go to the Emperor’s Coven instead. “My mother sends her regards.”
His smile shrunk by a few teeth, but quickly snapped back into place. “Please tell Odalia I return them in kind.” He spoke smoothly.
As she did that morning, Emira did not ask for more details. “I will.”
The coven leader gestured to a chair in front of his desk, moving on from the pleasantries. “Please take a seat, we have much to discuss.” Emira did so with a nod, finding that the chair was comfortable to sit in. “Let me fill you in on our marvelous system. Illusion Coven witches go on jobs every day to provide illusion magic to those in need.” He emphasized the word need. “Customers request work and witches are assigned to help them. Starting tomorrow, you will shadow one of our finest witches. For today, you will work with me.” He lifted one hand to his chest to emphasize that information.
So it was mostly small jobs then. “What kinds of jobs are requested?” Emira asked, curious about what exactly she would be doing.
“All kinds.” The coven leader counted on his fingers as he listed them. “Things like performances, advertising, special effects, temporary cloning, astroturfing, and too many others to count.” The list piqued Emira’s interest, especially work in special effects. “Today we’ll be helping set up signs for the construction coven. I’ll show you around our building, and then we’ll be on our way.” The coven leader rose from his seat as he finished.
“Sounds like a plan.” Emira stood as well, smoothing her pants as she did. The coven leader stepped around his desk and led her out the door, back into the hallway.
“Our building is small, most of the rooms are offices for our witches. The bathrooms and the break room are at the end of this hallway.” The coven leader pointed down the hall to the left. “There is a small theater next to the lobby, where we perform amazing shows.” He started walking down the right hall, with Emira following behind.
They made the same turns through the hallways as Emira did to get in there, which she made note of in case she needed to get back to the coven leader’s office. When they reached the lobby, they went to a set of two large doors on one side of the room.
“This is our grand theater!” The coven leader pulled the door open as he spoke, showing off the room to Emira. It was larger than expected, with a stage in back and seats that could hold a crowd of about 100. She wondered if she’d get to perform there during her internship; that would be cool. She looked around for a minute, taking in the sights, then backed away so the coven leader could close the door.
“Are you ready for your first job with the coven?” The coven leader asked, that too large grin returning to his face.
Emira nodded. “I’m ready.”
“Let’s go then.” They walked towards the front door, passing by the coven member who had returned to his counter. The coven leader stopped to speak with him. “Assign the other interns to Jennifer for today, I’ll have permanent assignments for them tomorrow.” The coven member nodded and wrote something down in his notebook.
With that done, the coven leader led Emira outside to start walking to their destination. He said it was only a few blocks away, so they could walk. The weather was clear, and it had warmed up since Emira’s earlier walk to the coven.
It only took about five minutes to reach their destination, which was a large empty lot surrounded by a fence. Construction Coven witches milled around it, hauling in equipment and large pieces of lumber. Some were using glyphs to enhance their strength and were carrying massive stone blocks like they were filled with air.
Emira looked around, eyes landing on the clear leader of the project. She was wearing a bright orange vest and were carrying a clip board, a sure sign of being in charge. When she saw Emira and the coven leader approaching, she waved them over. Emira followed him over, staying back and to his right.
“Thanks for coming.” The construction member said in a low, gravelly voice. Now that she was closer it would be easy for Emira to make that orange vest neon green instead, so so easy, but she would have to wait for the right moment if she wanted to do it.  “We just love your work.”
The coven leader smiled, giving a practiced flourishing bow. “Glad to be of service.” He then gestured back at Emira. “Ms. Blight is one of our interns from Hexside, she’ll be helping out today.” Emira flashed a brief wave and a smile from behind him.
“Fantastic.” The construction members tone of voice did not match her word choice. “You’ll be setting up the construction signs today. We need one on each corner, at the entrances, and every ten feet as warnings around the perimeter.” She pointed to each area as she mentioned it, spinning her finger in a large circle to represent the perimeter.
“We’re on it.” The coven leader said, then turned to Emira. “Let’s start at the front.” She nodded, so he strode back towards the entrance.
When he reached it, he lifted his right hand and drew an illusion circle. “The construction coven likes their warning signs to be bright.” He finished the circle and cast the spell, causing a flash of light. When it faded a moment later, a large sign had appeared on the fence next to the entrance. It said ‘warning, active construction’ in bright orange letters, the same shade as the vest. With a second spin of the finger, it lit up with flashing light.
Emira raised her hand to make another one, perhaps in a different color scheme, and started to draw a large magic circle for it. She had drawn about half of the circle when a hand on her wrist stopped her.
“Oh no, don’t worry about it. I’ve got this.” The coven leader said, once again wearing his large grin. He didn’t close his hand around her wrist, but the firm touch carried his intent clearly. Emira pulled her hand back, allowing the magic circle to dissipate. She couldn’t help but feel confused, hadn’t he brought her here to help?
“I’ll do the ones at the other entrance then.” Emira suggested, pointing over at the specified location.
The coven leader shook his head, his smile not giving an inch. “That won’t do at all, you must stay with me. Come, watch how I layer these spells.” He again cast an illusion spell to make a construction board, and then lit it with a similar lighting spell.
Emira felt her jaw slack; if she had less restraint she’d be openly gaping. He didn’t want her assistance then, did he? He just brought her along to show off his two layered sign magic, which wasn’t anything special in Emira’s opinion.
They moved next to the other entrance, where he again insisted on creating the signs himself. By the time they made it to the outside corners, Emira wasn’t even watching him cast anymore.
She was one of the finest illusion witches in her year, good enough that she could’ve been sent to the Emperor’s Coven instead, but here she was just standing around doing nothing. She turned to watch the foot traffic move by, combining that with staring into space.
It was only day one, and her eyes were already glazing over.
She didn’t think it was possible, but she hoped Edric was having a better time.
