The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) is a lot of fun so far, but I'm not surprised that the same folks who made Bly Manor are so thoughtless about their use of queer characters. Looooot of evil people whose evilness is highlighted by queer debauchery in this show. Still better than what they did at the end of Bly Manor, but an uncomfortable reminder that having a diverse cast of queer characters is often only greenlit if they are evil characters.

#original #bly manor #fall of the house of usher #the fall of the house of usher #the haunting of bly manor #bury your gays #the problem isn't that there was a gay death at the end it's how they did it and what they SAID with it #also the character of Hannah got done dirty but I'm happy to see her actor again in this #queer villains #I have a whole separate post about bly manor being manipulative and unfocused in its ending but the main issue is that #it frames a character with a chronic illness as right and heroic for killing herself bc her illness made her a danger to others #which was a wild heel turn #also the most evil character in the show is punished by being forced to relive the trauma of being sexually abused in childhood.#unbelievably thoughtless show belied by genuinely excellent horror cinematography that made me think it was better than it ended up being #but I'm sure this show will fuck up too i just wanna see rich people get stylistically murdered. with no good guys it's easier to detach.#both shows suffer from the issue of prioritizing spooky visuals and cool shots and then after that figuring out what they're trying to say #which means their metaphors come across all garbled and frequently offensive bc horror is a deeply political and allegorical genre #and if you're going to tell a 9 hour Horror Story you need to know what the fuck you're saying!#but at least it looks cool! I love the acting too. and the one-liners.
