I would like to hear your thoughts on the DF diaboys routes you have played at this point.

yessir!! under the cut:

Shu: Shu's DF route is an exercise in meeting him where he is. We know Shu loves his family, but we have to understand it isn't easy for him to show it. We're right at the precipice of a big change in Shu and Reiji's relationship, but we have to accept that acting the way Reiji wants him to just isn't what's best for Shu. Yui wants confirmation of Shu's affection for her, but she has to learn that he shows his affection in other ways. It's kind of like this route is showcasing Shu's flaws and you're going, "That's okay! I like Shu because he's Shu!" so I think it's sweet. Take your time, Shu! ...If I had to complain about this route, I'd say that we spend so long away from the other characters that it gets lonely. I guess that's the point, though...I just don't really find all the "hiding from everyone else" scenes very exciting after a while. We could've spoken to Reiji more, and I honestly feel like Shu and Reiji have bigger breakthroughs in other routes, so this one feels like it's missing a big scene with the Beatrix bros.

Ayato: If you had asked me when I had just played HDB and MB, I would have told you, "Never in a MILLION YEARS will I feel anything other than hatred for Cordelia," but well!!! Surprise!!! This one will make you feel things other than hatred for Cordelia, whether you like it or not. I truly understand how the triplets felt when they said they loved and hated her. The situation is too complicated for me to get into it very much here, but in short I'll say that I really liked the direction they took with the plot of this route, and I came out of it feeling like Ayato and Yui took a well-earned step forward. Absolutely loved this one. So proud of both of them. Whenever I play through the DF Sakamaki prologue, it makes me feel cruel if I don't pick Ayato's route lmao

Laito: If you are an angst lover like me then you will eat this shit up. It's an extremely bad time for every character involved. It hurt so good. I had to spend 70% of this route convincing Laito not to kill himself. In this route, Laito discovers a fact about his father that changes his outlook on his entire life, like every single thing about his life, and the performance that Daisuke Hirakawa gives is like.. It's pure art idk what to tell you. Reading this route is not good enough, you need the audio. I was scared, I wanted to cry, and as a triplet lover there were high points too, but my heart ached for the entire route, even through the good ending! I like that even the obligatory fanservice scenes don't let you forget how terrible the situation is! Strongly strongly strongly recommend

Yuma: Alas, I can only give you a super biased review of this one. It's my favorite route because it has so many good Shu/Yuma scenes. This route is our last bit of "Shu avoids Yuma and keeps secrets from him for his own good!" drama before Yuma finally gets the whole truth about his childhood. We get the cute flashback scenes, Yuma gets some awful nightmares and has some panic attacks, there's a little of everything! :D Even Zweig is there and he and Yuma are super cool, and if you know anything about Lost Eden then you know how hilarious that is. Anyway, this all culminates in THE YUMA BEST FRIEND MONOLOGUE which is one of my favorite dialovers scenes, period, because it makes me so happy. It feels soooo good to watch the arson recovery trio...recover from the arson. 10/10. Shuuma shippers, this one is required reading.

Carla: I'm definitely not shaming you if this route is to your taste, but it certainly wasn't to mine :') Most diaboys talk down to you, but Carla talks down to you to such a degree that I started getting offended over stuff I've never been offended about before. Like, "What do you mean you don't like the taste of my blood?! My blood is fucking delicious!" lol. I am not into all the forced pregnancy stuff, I am not into the demon racism stuff, I am not into how often Yui is reminded that she has no family and no one will come save her. I personally found Carla to be unbearable until he collapsed and started the process of dying. Then he got all sensitive and lonely and I was like "ok I can deal with him now." The ending isn't very satisfying either (What do you mean sucking Yui's blood will stop him from dying for now? He's been sucking her blood this whole time and his symptoms got way worse.) and Carla's blood sucking noises made me want to take my headphones off and throw them away (sorry toshiyuki morikawa I respect you so much toshiyuki morikawa) soooooooooo.........I didn't like it. I grew to like Carla around CL so don't be sad if you like him, ok? He's my friend now, but this route is still just unpleasant to me hgfghsdf

Shin: I know I said I hated the forced pregnancy talk and the demon racism plans and I did hate them, believe me, but Shin's route was successful in getting me to like him. I love that they put him in jail and beat the shit out of him, that was such a good scene and I really feel like my tastes are finally being represented lmao. Because it's his introductory route, he's pretty rough around the edges (true for every diaboy—everyone is a huge jerk in their introductory route) but there was still a lot to enjoy! The flashback scenes were fun (dare I say...he was...cute?!) and when put together with Carla's, the Tsukinamis have a super interesting story & dynamic together, and it fits the themes of dialovers really well. The differences with Carla's route, to me at least, are that Shin's scenes feel more like "playing with a diaboy" even when he gets mean, Shin has the added appeal of being teasable and of being a BIG FLUFFY DOG, and of course, Shin's blood sucking scenes didn't make me want to die. I'm clearly in the minority here, though, because Shin is at the bottom of every popularity poll I see lol...Anyway, it didn't make me LOSE MY SHIT like some other routes did, but I had fun playing this one!!

anyway, contrary to popular belief, Antonio is actually my favorite RP character. just in general. and i've never actually seen him live until the other day. unbeknownst to me, i was waiting for a whole year to be able to actually see him live, i think i was more excited about it than cc!anthony was 💀

which might contribute to my love for him bc i had to piece him together like a puzzle from everyone else's POVs and clips n stuff. so at first i didn't want him to come back bc i was afraid he'd be different from the Antonio i made up in my head... but then. i haven't sat n watched, at mostly full attention, a whole stream for 7 hours in a while LOL

when i watched cc!buddha's rdrp vods a year ago n saw Antonio, i thought to myself "oh no... Tony isn't actually my new muse is he...?". and for a while i didn't draw him bc i didn't have any ideas + i didn't really know how to draw him. but i did know that when i did learn how to draw him, it'd be over for me (i wouldn't want to draw anyone else, and i was right oops 😭)

my idea of Antonio is he's just a dumb, impulsive, silly little theatre kid that got wrapped up in being an outlaw bc of Wu n Dot after his house burned down. they woulda been moving around in old box cars wherever the trains took them. Dot dies before the events of WildRP(headcanon), and Wu to me, is the autistic kid that follows Antonio around bc he talks a lot n has charisma lolol. also, to me, Wu is not as evil as he was intended to be, he just follows in Sonny's footsteps who's calculated n violent. While Antonio chooses Cesare's path to be more diplomatic and focuses more on his reputation. Antonio can't win a fight to save his life, and i love him for it. he thinks he's scary n dangerous, but to me, he couldn't hurt a fly hehe. i mean, one of the first things he did in the crossing was host a talent show at the local theatre. i'm a big fan of pathetic men, what can i say.

speaking of, i love how pathetically in love he is with Renni. and i love how, despite how much they like each other, they never actually get together n still respect each other as friends. they are the embodiment of the saying "if you love something let it go, if it comes back its yours" but without the last part.. they are so tragic to me.

in the last 3.5 years of watching rp, i've never had any character or character dynamic make me cry. like, as much as i love how doomed n toxic Donnie/Lang is, i've teared up a bit, but they've never made me cry just thinking about them. but Antonio, n by extension, his relationship with Renni, has made me cry multiple times just thinking about them 😭 and yeah, i cried the other day when Antonio was thinking about Renni LOL

idk why he's the character that changes my brain chemistry, but uh. he is. i've literally never rambled about a character so much online, sorry for the great wall of text bc of it.. i'm usually masking so hard a lot of the time, but i've been wanting to talk about Antonio for so long with no one to yap to so, yknow.. he gets me to unmask and i also love him for that :']

Which OC's fit to the seven deadly sins: YES The yes as a joke aside, in all honesty, the majority of aspects/sins would fit to assign to almost any OC of mine, cause most of them are some deeply flawed individuals lol

More fleshed out answers to the traits that fit the most:

Pride: Emilio - He's a very prideful person, proud of his family, proud of his upbringing, proud of his achievements, well, proud of almost everything. Which is one of the reasons why he feels so down whenever something in life doesn't work as he planned, or wished for, or also why he has high standards for other people aswell. He simply wants everyone to be at their max form, cause in his eyes it's a big advantage to have in life.

Greed: Aaron - Well if this isn't fitting idk what is lol. Greed is definitely a big aspect of his personality and of his actions. Like doing outrageous stuff online for reactions? Most of these can be linked back due to him being greedy for followers and attention. It's not only online-based though, craving for recognition and for the feeling of being better than everyone else reflects back to his regular life and interactions aswell.

Wrath: Luca - Dude is pretty fuelled by anger, it's one of the heaviest triggers for his impulses and a big reason why he's often losing control to his urges. Is very heavily attached to the things he holds dear, so whenever something/somebody hurts him, he'll quickly bury the feelings of hurt underneath negativity and that usually leads to explosive moments.

Envy: Sharon - Tbh barely a day of her's goes by without thinking of herself in the shoes of some other. Whether it's because someone else is in a relationship and she is not, or other people getting to interact with their families (because she doesn't have one), feeling happy whenever someone experiences misfortune, leads to her feeling better because at that moment she isn't the one suffering, stuff like that pretty much shapes her mood.

Lust: Vale - Gotta say it's self explaining lmao, and also it just fits all over bc despite being a pretty nihilistic person, he'd feel even less desire to live without simple enjoyments (short lived flings, alcohol or cigarettes, free time alone, etc) in life, so if he wants something, he gets/does it, no matter the measures, or if it's forbidden or frown upon, like he doesn't care about any consequences, cause the lust for his desires (even if only temporary) outweighs most things.

Gluttony: Maggie - This was the hardest one to assign tbh, but it fits to Maggie the most. She's kinda wasteful, for example as in that she buys way too much food, and thus tends to throw a lot of it out, because she just doesn't think about if she will truly use up everything. This doesn't extend to food only, she simply may buy too many things cause she simply can't get enough and loses overview of a realistic view of uses. Also it doesn't help that she gets attached to material possessions kinda quickly.

Sloth: Kaia - She's not lazy at all, it's rather that she often just doesn't... care. A very chill person, some would describe her as too chill. Like, her job as a cemetary caretaker? She does it because not many people else would do, and she doesn't mind doing it, cause well, it's just a job to her. Not many things surprise or shock her, as she herself found the explanation for most stuff in life. Which is probably a reason generally why she often seeks out more extreme stuff for excitement.

Gina gets a pass for this challenge bc neither of these sins fit her very much (and she's also the 8th one heh)

finished off DD last week and we're straight into soj.

i know the least about soj of any of the games probably, which is kind of nice because these later games really need the element of surprise they don't have a lot else lmao.

some thoughts on the tutorial case:

the good

this is a big visual upgrade from dual destinies (although i'm still unconvinced the games needed to move to 3d assets). phoenix's model looks better in ways i found hard to articulate until someone on twt pointed out SOJ gets rid of the bulky black outlines. it's so much smoother!

aside from the models, the sprite animations for the new characters are very detailed (almost too detailed... i mean do we need ninety animations per NPC? can we get some extra ones for phoenix lmao), i like how the UI has been refreshed to match khurain, overall it just looks more polished/complete than DD.

insight is new, and subject to suck more later lmao, but so far it's the best minigame since the magatama. both perceive and mood matrix suffer from being kind of nonsensical; it never stopped being goofy to me in DD that you just had interactions like "well i found the body and i was shocked" "UM ACTUALLY my robot says you were RED EMOJI FACE, so you're lying!" insight, on the other hand, is more based on logic/reason -- spot the contradiction, think through a couple different layers of info (rayfa's words vs what's on screen and what makes sense), etc. i also like the idea that the ghost witness isn't lying, you just have to interpret the memory -- it's a bit of a refreshing change from everyone just committing perjury 30000000 times.

the defense culpability act is very funny. i can't be mad at it because it is too funny. i think i should get to kill the prosecutor if i win.

also, maya having lived here for unspecified time period, surely being aware of the lawyer stuff and still inviting her best friend, ace attorney phoenix wright, is very hilarious. i hope edgeworth, academic of foreign legal systems, had a heart attack as soon as he heard where nick's vacation was

it is also funny to see supervillain payne. winston payne was just kind of an asshole and largely incompetent. gaspen is a supervillain who longs for murder. well, okay. why not i guess

the questionable

khura'in is but the latest in a long line of exciting AA countries that will have you asking "what are the geopolitics of this world?" and "...is this racist?"

it's really funny to me that the first culprit was a white guy on an eat pray love journey but that his eat pray love journey is totally incidental to the crime, apparently. khurain is apparently very welcoming to immigrants if one can become head monk guarding their sacred treasures after a mere six months, and payne is chief prosecutor after three.

it's also very funny that with his life potentially on the line, the only person phoenix is worried about is maya. i think there is an understandable in-game explanation, which is that you have to assume every game might have a new audience and that new audience has only been told of maya so far. but returning players who know he has a teenage daughter might uh. wonder.

the bad

i can sense that the more lore i learn about khurain the more racially uncomfortable i am going to become

the names are BRUTAL i wish they'd stop. i get that ace attorney always has silly goofy pun names. but i feel they're veering further and further from the... slightly more believable names into stuff that just sounds stupid, and man, trying to apply ace attorney pun name goofiness to names that are also supposed to be in a fake fictional language .... i mean it sounds like i'm reading racist jokes from the 90s. it's uncomfortable.

i also think khura'in lore is bound to upend or retcon the superior kurain village lore, which ruled in the trilogy and did not need expanding into a kingdom. isolated little village matriarchy of witch family that are constantly committing sorocide >>> whatever's about to happen here. it's great for rayfa that she does her lil dance for enrichment 2x a day to have temporary hallucinations in a pool of water, but maya crosses her fingers and shapeshifts. checkmate.

lastly, one thing i found myself thinking as i moderately enjoyed the tutorial case was that it was honestly kind of nice having a case scaled back. i can't shake the sense that three playables is just too much for these games; apollo was dead weight narratively in DD and i think athena is about to suffer that fate in SOJ. the character writing in these new games is just not strong enough to manage this many major characters and their whole entourages. the mistake of the original trilogy was accidentally setting a precedent for "new prosecutor every game, who is also our friend by the end :)". the main cast is so huge that most of them just end up stagnating or disappearing into the void or whatever; apollo and athena cannibalized each other's screentime in DD, athena usurped trucy, SOJ is introducing a whole whack of new characters to replace THOSE newbies... it's a lot. we don't need to reinvent the wheel every new game.

anyway... i know a little about 6-2 and i expect it to exacerbate a lot of these issues lmao.

There have been a couple of things! Or at least more things that I can kinda comfortably mention lol:

So we officially have Price being in love with Nikolai now, however they aren't together (yet) they just pine and literally everyone around them knows

Price no longer got his hat from Alex in universe, instead he got it from Nikolai which we will learn more about in the NikPrice one-shot (still working on it, its gonna be so long 😭)

You guys get some stuff on Price's sister now that I've officially started building her (thank you therapist is laswell's wife anon)

Her name is Josephine Laswell (Price), she took Laswell's last name while they were married.

She's an on base therapist who typically does short term sessions with people, and usually they are sessions that the soldiers specifically sign up for, not ones they are forced into

However, Price knows that a lot of times therapists will just sign through the papers for the military members far too quickly, and he wanted to make sure Roach was okay so he asked his sister to take him on as a patient since he knew she would actually fully make sure he was okay before sending him back into the field.

She only goes by her first name on base, it was a request from both Price and Laswell who didn't want her getting caught up in their work if something happened. Because of that her name tags only ever say "Dr. Jo" or "Dr. Josephine"

Price calls her Josie as a nickname and Laswell calls her Pheenie as a nickname

Soap definitely doesn't tell his family when he brings Ghost and Roach home with him for the first time

Like he talks to his family at least once a week on a big family video call, and straight up sometimes Ghost and Roach will just be chilling in the background so they assume that Soap has told his family

Then they go home with him and meet them for the first time and Soap's mom is like "John why didn't you tell us you had boyfriends!!!"

Then its just a big jumble of Scottish words as the entire family start like jumping on Soap who is returning with just as much energy

Then suddenly it just stops and Mama MacTavish is like "anyways, you two both come inside its so nice to meet you, here let me give you a hug"

Also Roach definitely thinks he is the youngest out of their trio until Soap finally admits (gets caught) about lying about his age and Roach finds out that he and Soap are actually the same age and he legit gets so excited about it just because now when Soap tries to pull the "older and wiser" card he gets to throw it back in his face

Was thinking about Roach's first life again and particularly his childhood and thought I'd give some more on that plus a fun behind the scenes

When Roach thinks about that memory from when he was a child of his dad throwing him into the river, he remembers the location. A long dirt Roach through the woods leading to a little river with a bridge and highway above it

Fun facts, I actually used a place that my family used to go when I was younger as inspiration for the place. So the place where Roach got thrown into the river is technically real and exists in Arkansas lmao

I think Roach, in his first life, because he spend so much time trying to get out of his house to get away from his parents spent a lot of time in the woods around his house

Spending time in the woods meant getting use to all sorts of critters/creatures as well as getting good at spotting things like snakes so that he could avoid him

That being said he was definitely the type of southern kid/teen who would go outside for like five minutes then come back up to the house with a snake in one hand and a possum in the other lmao

He's never mentioned that he really isn't afraid of any animals to the 141 before

Jackson knows because he definitely watched Roach pick up enough random ass snakes/rats/whatever else during their time on Griggs squad. Point is, Roach has no fear

The 141 discover this bit by bit

They're tracking through the woods toward one of their objectives and suddenly Roach rushes forward and grabs Price, pulling him to a stop

The whole team are confused/lowkey annoyed until Roach steps forward and picks up the snake that Price was about to step on

A rat ends up running into the break room on base. Gaz freaks tf out and refuses to get off of the couch. Roach walks in and within like two minutes is carrying the rat outside in his hands

Just little things like this that the 141 eventually have to get used to because it's just part of Roach's charm lmao

Roach's first kiss in his first life was with the son of his church's homophobic ass preacher. They would sneak away from after church activities and into the woods to "hang out" which for two repressed teenage gays really just meant making out

Roach genuinely thought he was going to marry that guy and their relationship lasted until Roach decided he was going to leave. He asked him to leave with him

He said no because he was too afraid to tell his parents yet. Roach never held it against him, but their relationship ended and Roach never saw him again after he left

The same boy did exist in his new life, but Roach stayed clear of him because of Simon/the mental age difference

Currently, both Ghost and Price have both had glimpses of their first life through dreams

I've mentioned Jackson having struggles with sudden loud noises and flashes of light due to his first life, but I think he also has issues with planes/aircrafts because of the memory of the crash

Jackson is also a southern boy, thinking from like Louisiana. He can kinda turn his accent on and off, but most of the time it onlycomes out when he's passionate/in the middle of sex. He can also speak Louisiana French

Honestly my idea of what Jackson looks like changes every two seconds he's like a chameleon so he has like no in universe appearance yet dkfnfn

His sense of style however? Stylish man to say the least

Like somehow always looks put together, even in sweatpants and a tee shirt. It kinda pisses Gaz off sometimes, but most of the time he's just like "God damn my boyfriend is hot."

Headcanon that Gaz loves spicy foods and assumes that Jackson can't take any spice so he puts some in his food at one point to prank him

He's terrible surprised when Jackson just eats the food with no issue. Jackson has to be like "babe I've literally grown up eating Cajun food have you never had Cajun food" and then he makes Gaz something with a lot of spice and Gaz is the one who ends up not able to handle it sjfbjfndjdj

Why/why not? in all honesty once i've written a fic it's out there in the world and i am absent from anything going forward of it. i dearly, dearly appreciate everyone who puts time into commenting because it truly is the thing i stick around fandom for, but i don't have the time or energy a lot of the time to reply effectively and to not just keep repeating thank you's!

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? considering it uses the 'Bad Ending' tag, it'll have to be a room full of knives! it is canon-compliant though, so is the angst really my fault?

What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? i feel like most of my fics have a somewhat happy ending, if not just a simple open-ended one, but i might say sunbreak for this because the ending of it is very joyful and there isn't much else left to say to hide the happiness.

Do you get hate on any fics? not really! i did get the worlds most insane comment on NOSTOS a couple years ago that was kind of horrible to read but it was anger at a character and not my fic lmao.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? i'd never written it until this year because it was on my writing goals list for the year! i can't really say what kind because i've only written a couple of scenes so i'm not sure where they sit in the grand scheme of things but i have written some!

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've ever written? not really! i am a big AU fan — the kandreil teen wolf au i wrote this year with the beloved and highly esteemed @dayurno is probably the craziest, but i have a kandrew 'gideon the ninth' au planned too! if we're talking actual crossovers, there was a hilarious in-joke au partially written in a group chat a couple of years ago that was a WOH and MDZS law firm au. xue yang owned jby's soul. wei wuxian had bitcoin. i have a customised t-shirt for it.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? yup! and it's the reason i put writing away for about four years when i was in high school because i was so demotivated to share my stuff.

Have you ever had a fic translated? i think there's two or three of my fics that i've given permission for russian translations! i don't think they've been finished though so it would be cool if that ever ends up happening!

Have you ever co-written a fic before? as stated earlier, i spent eight months in an echo-chamber with @dayurno in which we went into a mutual fugue state and came out with wet-eyed banshee kevin and his high school boyfriends. maybe one day we'll get to the twinyards sequel of it i do also have to shoutout @picturedframes who was half of the mastermind behind sunset, like survival, and has contributed an insane amount to other works like diachronic and all that looking down.

What's your all time favourite ship? don't ask me this,,,, it chops and changes from year to year! i think in favour of being nice to myself i'm going to just say percabeth — they're the OGs from day one and they still hold up in my heart

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? either my 'the old guard' wenzhou au, or the other installments of the nostos 'verse! i loved them dearly at the time and i do think they would be well worth writing still, but my interests have moved on fandom-wise slightly! maybe one day i'll revist them, but not any time soon i don't think.

What are your writing strengths? ohh. digging my teeth into a character, i think. i use fic as a way to kind of just write thesis' and loveletters and stories all at the same time, and i think i'm good at holding up a character and writing out what makes them tick! and maybe a weird one but fleshing out the wider world? i'm very proud of like, my background characters. describing people who take coffee orders and who are studying in the library too and who are one-line classmates.

What are your writing weaknesses? this time last year i would have said dialouge but i think i've gotten better at it this year! probably being too verbose. i think i have a tendency to get carried away with thoughts and descriptions and i think sometimes that means they lose their potency when i really need them! it's a goal for next year i think; learning how to pare back my writing and make it more effective.

heya! I was scrolling through the tags on that ask-culture post and saw yours, and just wanted to stop by to say that that's really cool!! I was enamoured with the idea of the large hadron collider when I was a kid-- what was it like working there (if you're allowed to say)? do you have any interesting stories from those days? and were any of you amused at the rumors going around back then, that "when they turn on the LHC the world will totally end!1!!"?

(my own "funny" anecdote: I remember playing Zelda: Twilight Princess and eating a cheese sandwich that day, patiently waiting for the sky to light up or some black hole to appear, even though I knew it was fearmongering newspaper bullshit lmao... just the awe at the thought that we had a construct so powerful to smash atoms like that was rocking my world, I was so excited to see what things we would discover from it!)

The experience of working at the LHC will probably change a lot depending on when you are there and what you work on. I've met a few people who work on "beams", which is all about the low energy proton systems that get things started and the focusing magnets and stuff, but most people I know are on one of the four big LHC experiments: ATLAS, LHCb, CMS, and ALICE. So there's always people who do almost purely data analysis, but I think it's fun to talk about the hardware of the detectors themselves and what it feels like to work on them.

People who work on ATLAS probably have the most boring experience. Not that their detector isn't cool (it's very very cool), but ATLAS is located at the main CERN campus, so I don't think there's really much of an "ATLAS control room culture" different from the general CERN campus culture. Noone has to bike between CERN and the control room, or take the shift bus at 6am (all the bus drivers have fantastic music taste btw). They can go to the main cafeteria. Being "on a detector shift" just sort of has less of a vibe for them.

I'm going to talk about the LHCb detector because I'm fairly familiar with it and they just rebuilt the WHOLE thing in 2019-2023. So it's like they're back in 2009 again really. LHCb is about a half hour bike ride from main CERN, tucked in between the back fence of Geneva airport and a McDonald's (I like to joke that the detector is under the McDonald's but it's not). So when you're on site at LHCb, you have to hang out with other people from LHCb! And during the rebuilding period, you also get to meet a lot of the technicians. Not everyone who works on the LHC is a physicist, on the detector side we do also have some awesome people who help us put the damn thing together (electrical engineers and former mechanics). There's a lot of gruntwork to be done to put a detector together, and for me it involved cleaning and plugging in a whole lot of optical fibre connectors (to the sound of the disco radio station). There was this one spot on the stairs to the scaffold we called the "helmet check": there was a pole sticking out and people usually duck enough to miss it with their head, but still hit the helmet. Working on scaffold 3m up in the air to reach the top of the detector parts is cool.

The detector pieces are mostly assembled above ground and then moved downstairs when they're complete. To be clear, "downstairs" here is 100m underground by elevator. There's a big cylindrical hole on site ("the pit") where detector components can be lowered in by crane. I just think that's pretty cool!

Anyway if you're friends with the detector teams, you get to hear a lot of the "real facts" early and without politics. Sometimes you try not to admit the detector is behind schedule on construction until after someone else has already admitted to needing a delay. Sometimes everyone can tell that a deadline is going to be missed but you can't announce that too early just in case your estimate of how much you'll miss the deadline by is too far off. Sometimes you hear that something is broken a few days before it's officially announced. Sometimes you hear that another detector asked for a beam stop and it was to try to get a bird out of their detector cavern (I don't think they ever found the bird). I know in the early years there was a months long repair shutdown caused by a pine marten chewing through an important power cable. LHCb has a local cat that drops by to visit and people put photos of it on twitter.

I wasn't on the project early enough for the first turn on, but I was really glad to be around for this upgrade period. Seeing the detector up close really gives you a sense of the scale (huge), and working on the details really lets you know how much time and care and effort goes into it. And that's without even discussing the software and computing stuff! Huge project for humanity overall, such a privilege to be there myself for a little bit of it and have put my hands on it (while appropriately electrically grounded of course).

The whole thing was a pretty unique life experience. Long and busy days at the detector, but cool, and having lunch (or on site BBQ) with my colleagues was always great. I think I'll always miss it, but I don't regret changing jobs to have a better work life balance.

(And if you're in Geneva over winter, try to get yourself on a tour of one of the detectors! You can't go in the other months when the beam is on, winter is guaranteed Tour Time but there is sometimes a week or so in summer.)

all these asks got me thinking about roxy experiencing the outside world for the first time lmao most conversations beginning with "HEY CASSIE / (CASSIE'S DAD) COME SMELL / FEEL / TASTE THIS" and it's just. a really big stick she found.

This is my favourite part of Meteors! The excitement and the sheer awe at the world around them as they experience it for real for the first ever time.

In this version, she would only be with the other animatronics in the ruins for a little while and she'd probably not want to leave yet. She'd be running around having her fun discovering how everything feels under her paws and showing off to everyone what she can do now. When she gets to live with Cassie and her dad and actually get to go outside of her own volition, she's absolutely like what you said too.

Running around, finding the most mundane things ever and shouting to Cassie to come see what she found. Cassie returns the favour by finding things like a different coloured leaf to the one Roxy found to show her. Cassie's dad still isn't entirely sure how he should interact with her and she's not as familiar with him yet so he would only really get involved whenever Cassie kind of invites him to get involved. He's more than happy to watch them though. He looked away for two seconds though and Cassie was cheering Roxy on to climb a tree which... he knew he probably should have tried to stop her but like. She was digging her claws in trying to climb and it wasn't going great so he left them to it. Until she yelled 'TO HELL WITH THIS' and just fucking leapt at it and pulled herself up as Cassie cheered. He's never moved so fast in his life lmao

But yeah, Roxy is losing her mind. She's running through grass, fascinated by the clouds and the dark sky (they had to wait till it got darker out because of the light sensitivity), climbing trees, having Cassie yell at her for trying to eat leaves, finding snails and having them and everything else she finds explained by Cassie... It's all so new and so amazing to her she loves it all so much already and she's so damn excited to see everything. She'll admit, it can get really overwhelming a lot of the time, but she wouldn't trade it for anything! Her tail is a blurr it's wagging so hard and if she wasn't so light sensitive, she'd have been out there all day every day if she could!

Cassie is so tired by the time they can drag her back inside. She's had to explain everything from how grass grows to how the clouds move and why the leaves fall off the trees. Anything she couldn't answer was redirected to her dad. Cassie loved it almost as much as Roxy did though. They played games in the park as well as all of the exploring stuff for as long as they could, they had a blast and a half!

And Roxy took a few dandelions, leaves and cool rocks back with her at Cassie's suggestion and Cassie's dad's insistence she do what she wants. When Roxy gets her prescription goggles, they go out in the day and she keeps telling them it's like a whole other world but they just can't quite see what she means. She's got questions for days though and they're both happy to answer them for her of course

i recently have been feeling a certain kind of way about reading fanfic; if i find myself scrolling (bored/looking for fun stories as always) i kinda just quickly scroll through the whole page and give?? up??? like im not as excited as i used to be. this is for a few reasons:

1. i feel like a lot of fics are the same now 👍🏼 not a terrible thing, but i really look back to the quarantine era of "forced creativity" (a different conversation) and think about just how much people were writing; not to "give out content," but to truly explore an online writing community and do something that was worthwhile. the resurgence if the "[as]" trend on tiktok really put that into perspective for me: quarantine forced ppl to explore creativity, created job opportunities based on that (influencers/content creators as we now know them), and really pushed artistry to the point of basic normalcy. even though this was a cool kind of thing (seeing so many ppl create), our level of understanding art and its brilliance was lowered. which brings me to point 2-

2. a good amount of the "creative era" of quarantine was simply ppl replicating other ppl's original ideas, or straight out stealing them to add an extra topping of fame, bc ofc "everybody wants to be famous." my best examples of this are the two sides of the tiktok coin: dancing & damelio.

dancing became a big thing, and it made sense to start dancing trends; a trend is just popularity + replication. but charli damelio becoming famous for creating one of those trends and it later being stated that a completely different girl, jalaiah harmon, created it and had no recognition until the news came out?

and yes, she was on ellen, but that pales in comparison to the millions of dollars that the damelio family made bc of one instance of improperly following a trend.

and that's what i see now with multiple online spaces; they've become boring bc everyone is doing the same thing w/o giving proper credit to anyone. before content creation & whatnot became huge, no one irl would go around seriously saying tht they created some huge, celebrity-reach trend without being checked.

now, the difference between tiktok and fanfic pertaining to "trends" is based on power imbalance. no one is gonna believe a middle schooler saying that they started the trend of wearing skirts over jeans when it was very obviously some a-list celeb. in writing, you look to your favorite authors, poets, etc. and formulate your own writing style. whether that's word choice, plot format, or anything else you can cultivate to your own writing experience.

while you can always put your own spin on new dance/fashion trend, writing is different. you wouldn't put a spin on a classic in the same way: it would be a modern retelling, or smth symbolic of the original. adding an extra move is is not equal to adding an extra sentence. and that is what leads me to my final point-

3. writing is becoming/has became very formulaic. a good amount of fics in the most popular fandoms here follow a similar style. we see this with the short cycle of complaints that went around when the fic format of "short blurb with a group of character names under it" came about. along with the fact that the format probably came from the notoriously unoriginal & wattpad-esque booktok, everyone who wanted activity in their notifs was using that format. and so now, with every new group of teens that comes here to enjoy stories and explore writing, the new "trend" isn't a fully fleshed out story: it's like pushing out content.

i'm not complaining, and i'm not saying that everyone lacks originality. i enjoy whatever ppl put out bc i know that any form of writing comes from some place within. i am simply making a written observation of something i've noticed happen over the last couple of years- being a younger teen when it started, and now growing into the basics of adulthood.

hi, do you have any manga/anime you'd recommend? I have not watched/read like anything popular, so no recommendations are off the table. I only just finished naruto and was like hey I actually really liked that (except for the huge flop at the end lmao) and decided to try some of the other big mangas and ended up reading one piece....... (some of the characters are fun, and the pirate setting is cool but oh god, at what cost???) anyway, i trust no one but you now, and I need a new hyperfixation or i'll die :)

I do need to clarify to everyone that I actually don't watch/read too much anime/manga. Especially recent popular stuff.

But I do want to push Samurai Flamenco onto everyone. It satirizes the super hero/power rangers genre and includes lots of gay shenanigans but also has some of the most insane plot twists of all time.

I am currently (slowly) rewatching Tiger & Bunny which is satirizing the same genres, has some more lowkey gay subtext if that's what y'all want, if you watch the non-netflix version there's LOTS of poking fun at capitalism/branding (but it's removed in netflix because they couldn't retain the licenses for the brands it was mocking...).

If you ned to watch just one... watch Samurai Flamenco

And honestly... that's the closest thing to Naruto I can rec? Like in terms of battle-y, action based stuff. Shounen-core stuff. And even then they're not that simialr... Naruto was an outlier for me in many ways, though I did looove Bleach until... I didn't love bleach.

Haikyuu is a sports anime I had a lot of fun with but also nothing new has been announced for the anime in like… years… and idk if I can recommend hte manga because I find the volleyball scenes to be impossible to follow in the manga form shgkjsdg But the manga IS done!!

If you liked Sasuke... watch/read Hunter x Hunter and meet my pal Kurapika :) It ALSO has some massive hiatuses and it's source material isn't finished BUT it's getting an update VERY SOON and it's VERY EXCITING! HxH and its predecessor YYH inspired a lot of shounen tropes that exist to this day except... it does them well.

Stuff that I wouldn't necessarily recommend based on your Naruto enjoyment but like in general: Tongari Boushi no Atelier (Witch Hat Atelier), Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon), No. 6 (I've only watched the anime and haven't read the source material, so idk what's better), and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Oh!! And Blue Period (manga > anime)

Random unorganised life rambles ig-

Isla is so adorable i swear. When it's the three of us fronting (Xera, Isla and I) i feel like so happy. Ofc i love everyone else too, but the atmosphere is so different? With us three, it's relatively calm, and just wholesome.

We got an album we ordered a couple of days ago, as well as some pcs, and it was just kind of funny that we kind of somehow fell into place there and then. Not us being obsessed with the pcs and photo book and stuff. It's difficult to explain, but despite being different, and even the big age gap between some of us, it feels so comfortable and normal you know?

We'll often just watch Chan's room together lol, because Isla loves him and we just feel at home together watching his lives. It's like us three are a little family, siblings that surprisingly never argue, like an ideal sibling universe haha. We're not siblings but it feels like it (a realistic siblings relationship example is Charlie and I- always arguing and dissing one another lol).

We've not done the best lately, but we're doing ok. It helps that although for example college results aren't going the best (well for maths solely at the moment), there isn't the dooming pressure and yelling. It's refreshing. It isn't ideal still, but it could be far far far worse.

Avi, oml. Basically, he's not really super into kpop, he gets it mildly, he listens to it occasionally (for me apparently), but he kind of looked at the amount we spent on albums and stuff lmao. He was like, why??? Also when i told him we were getting a signed jo yuri album, he was like, ok? It was clear i needed to explain why Jo Yuri is superior. Anyways.

Something about Xera, I've come to learn, he at first presented himself as being rather like Avi, hard, moody and scary. Turns out, he's probably the most babiest out of all of us non little parts. He is so sweet, and like not at all as he first presented. I think it must've just been a defensive barrier. I like that he's been showing up a lit recently ngl.

We've found that we do have older more proper adult parts, well to say we are aware of some. They are just extremely in the background if that makes sense. None of us have gotten the chance to speak to them at all, nor do we know any names. I only kind of stumbled across a very very vague kind of memory / thought/ recollection of one, i seem to think they're approaching their 30s. I don't know anymore than that. Probably never will. If they're staying away from us or being that discreet, there's probably a reason. It's good to i guess know that they're there, somewhere.

I'm so excited to get all the albums we ordered, i know Charlie got oddinary and the skz seasons greetings with a ton of pcs. I got the iz*one one reeler, which we got in the post today. The pcs are beyond beautiful, I can't wait to put them in a folder when we get the sleeves. I also got the freaking signed (real!!!) Jo Yuri Glassy album, which I'm so excited for, i can't wait to see what pcs we get too omg. That album will be like my most prized possession i swear. The one-reeler (colour of youth vers) is gorgeous beyond belief, the photo book is simply*chef kiss*, Xera was obsessed too. And the preorder benefits, got the full set, we were so lucky to get them though!

Hieloowww, Happy Munday! hope your monday isn't as munday as it sounds XD sry i'm so munday today. How's this week? hope this week isn't as crazy as your last week!! and yes! I also want to go back to the very beginning of the time, because I actually had put my tiny teenage soul into a small capsule like a few few years back and buried it by a pine tree. I meant to dig it back up but I handed over a shovel to another one whom I thought could hand it back to me when it becomes the right time, but seems like that ain't happen yet so haha yea I have some things that I miss and those could be the reason why I want to go back in times to just live those early memories again. I don't know, but yea it sounds very romantic in that sense =D, I've ordered some samples of those 3 perfumes that you mentioned! kinda excited because I never held any women perfumes in my crib before actually hahaha i might fall in love with the air around my living room after I get those samples wknos lmao but yeah, i heard the smell is one of those senses that keep our memories together through the long journey, I really wish I had a chance to smell some more scents in the past and sometime I also wish some of my memories had tied with some scent so I could remember it more vividly, but sadly some of the most important ones I have no memory of smell, well.. but if the brain-triggered smell which only exists in one's brain could also be considered as a type of smell than I have those kind of scent that ties with those important memories. like even if you don't actually smell a thing your brain perceive some memories as a form of smell or they function as some sort of smell, that sometimes like when you feel so happy or so excited you may feel like you are smelling something so sweet and fruity and floral, namean? lmao. speaking of your biggest biggest inspiration can I take a guess? hmm.. and people change because they get power, once you tell them how you feel that becomes a weak point on you, but i dont see them as unpleasant memories to keep tbh, i keep them because it showed me who they really were, for example my crush who liked me, i told him and he was like, no way, baby i like you too, and he didnt change at all, so that thought me that no matter how much fragile (? i might look to him, he would never take advantage of that with the "power" i gave him, he'd believe me and not test me, and we've been friends for 5+ years and he's never used that power against me, he's had girlfriends and stuff but he's never said "do you remember when you used to like me? or when we used to do this and that years ago?" or things like that, and thats the people i like to keep around me you know? those that would never take advantage of you no matter the situation.

I had to look up what “tephra” meant, & now I am even more intrigued in what the aftermath of the “big scene” will be. So excited to see what you’ve got in store for the remaining chapters!

fdljks there are a few titles in ashes that like. i don't know how it feels to everyone else, but they stand out to me. "holy", "analog", "keratin", "tephra", "ephemeral".

(gonna talk more about it under the cut)

look i'm just using this as an excuse bc i never talk about chapter titles

"holy" i think like. i mean it's More Than a play on holly/holy. there's obviously a connection to "sacrament" by titles, but i think from hollyshine's name alone, there's a lot of my thought process. and "light"; that chapter belongs to hollyshine more than jaystorm. i can't like. i can't like say terribly much about this, but yeah. it's also special because i believe it's the only title that isn't a noun.

"analog" refers not to analog/digital, but like. the biology term. also it stands out to me because i almost always spell it "analogue" so don't know what's up w/ that lmao.

"keratin" feels very harsh, at least to me. it's the stuff of claws and hair. most of ashes' chapter titles come from nature, so like analog, it feels out of place in that regard. but i like it a lot.

"tephra" is another term that's a little more technical and a little more removed the the cats. but. well. i can't say Anything about it, just that it's one of my favourite chapter titles.

and "ephemeral", which sounds like an adjective (although i'm using it as a noun), as well as just. idk. it stands out to me.

it's interesting to me tho bc these five chapters are like. holy isn't special, it's just holy's part of roar/wind/holy. both tephra and ephemeral are big because that's what happens when u get to the end of a story, every chapter from ice to wild is like. a lot. a lot of stuff. that's how Stories Work.

(ashes "slow plot" tag like it takes me a while to get anywhere but now i'm here and Just You Wait it's all at once.)

all of the chapter titles from "drought" to "wild" have very specific meanings i might talk about when i'm done with ashes. bc i'm quite happy with that set.

anyway i like. idk if anyone reads my chapter titles, especially for ashes where they're only one word, but i have lots of feelings about them.
