Yeah, you needed to pull pranks like these more often for these types of punishments.

"Hey, Kikoru and Reno?" Kafka asked in a whisper, screaming, looking at them with eyes like he would break down any second.

"Oi K-k-k kafka? Why the hell happened to you?" Kikoru tried to calm down the man, who was ready to cry.

"Why is Hoshina Fuk-taicho the meanest person right now? Yeah, I mean, he is mean almost every time, but isn't it too extra from the past few days? He gave me 100 more pushups for talking about how a partner whom you are dating always loves his or her boyfriend and gives him all the attention."

"Senpai, are you an idiot? I just got another 2 laps for murmuring, so please don't!" Reno karate chopped Kafka before coming even closer, which, for some reason, made Kikoru's face turn into a tomato as her heart felt ticklish.

"The platoon leader's name is the reason behind it. She and him are dating and probably had an argument because Hoshina Fuk-taicho literally gives her glares, and she just smiles at him and walks away."

"Oh, I see you guys have time to chit-chat during training. How about 10 more laps for each of you?" Hoshina butted in and threw them a glare that could probably kill them. With a sigh, Soshiro started walking home as they all fled.

He was furious because of that gosh-darn plush version of himself that you owned. It was cute at first, but after you started giving it more attention than him, he started getting pissed off. How the fuck can a plushie like him get more love than the real deal?

He took off his shoes, tossed his jacket on the coat rack, and walked into the bedroom to find you dozing off with the stuffed version of himself. Your expression was content.

He blushed

You have been taking that plush practically everywhere he can think of for the past few days—obviously not the bathroom. You would give him those adorable puppy eyes that would make him give up on trying to take it away.

He carefully removed the plush and threw it somewhere you could not find it because he had finally had enough.

The tiny moving plush-like thing in his hand apparently started screaming as well now.

"WHY ALWAYS MEEE!?!?"

What looked like the chibi mini-version of the Defence Force's biggest trump card, struggled to hold on his thumb, kicking around those little feet of his.

"Well, now I'm quite curious abut THAT story..."

"I CAN'T TURN BACK AND I AM T I N Y !!! (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )"

"I see that... How'd you even get in here?"

Tiny #8 stopped fidgeting a bit. Instead two unproportionally big round dark eyes goggled at him. It was undeniably adorable to look at. "Well after THIS happened, I couldn't grab my phone on the table anymore, so I ran around to find someone, but I figured Narumi and Kikoru would very likely take advantage of my situation and do something stupid with me."

"Oh yeah, they definitely would and I get why, honestly."

"So I ran around to find you, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BIG THE 1st DIVISION IS, WHEN YOU'RE LIKE THIS, OK?! And then I saw the slightly opened window and just crawled in... ༼☯﹏☯༽"

"Wait... you know where my temporary place in the 1st Division is located? Why?"

The big dark round eyes got even bigger with every word spoken.

"Yeah, don't look at me like that, I might coincidently got wind of stuff, you know?"

His unexpectedly open and emotional response threw Kafka off. For a second he forgot about his *tiny* main problem, his mind jumped between confused and worried and he couldn't comprehend with his reaction for now. After some awkward seconds in silence, Hoshina's tone grew significantly calmer, but still sort of off to his usual self-assured expression. "Well at least this time you're actually telling me about stuff that bothers you, huh?"

Silence again. While hanging from the palm of his Vice-Captain's hand Kafka realized something (besides his size) was different. His senses grew more aware of his surroundings to find answers.

"Are... are you drunk, sir?"

Besides the slight scent of alcohol in the air, and the - well quite obvious - bottle of sake on the table, the startled twitch on his face confirmed Kafka's guess was right. Other than the sake the only other thing on the table were some snacks. Another odd thing to Kafka, who was used to see Hoshina's surroundings stuffed with documents, loose papers, books and other work related things.

The silence lingered around them uncomfortably. To Kafka's suprise Hoshina was seemingly struggling with words. A look on his face Kafka couldn't remember seeing before. Now his mind definitely jumped to 'worried'.

Hoshina tried to mimic an insulted face and looked away. "A little tippsy at most... I'm off-duty for tonight.." Besides the slightly blushed nose and cheeks, Kafka now noticed some dark circles under red eyes. "..and despite my gut telling me better, I assumed I probably won't be needed anymore today, and that I could hang loose a little. It's not my Division after all, there's another Captain and Vice-Captain in charge here. So I might as well make use of that chance... Should have known, it would end up that way or another.. " He smiled a bit and Kafkas felt like his heart clenching from the sight. "Although I definitely should have placed my bet on YOU to be the reason for that." He chuckled lightly, while his expressions grew somewhat softer.

"I'm sorry, Sir."

"Nah, it's fine. As if I didn't get used to your-"

"I never put much thought to it, but ever since the Defence Force started preparing for the big counter attack on #9 your workload must've at least doubled in the 3rd and 1st Division.. and here I am still taking over the rest of your time as well..."

"Don't like where this is going, officer... You're not starting pitying me, are ya?"

"No I-...I just feel like.. I didn't realize, and there for not appreciated your work enough.." Silence. "And also.." The tiny kaiju had his look glued to the floor in front of him for a while now. "I know you told me to brush it off earlier but,... I truly regret ... not telling you about... #8 n'stuff.. I'm sorry... I'd change that if I could.."

A small plushy-sized Kaiju was gently put back on the ground again. Hoshina scratched his nose for a second, before bending far back to the other side of the room. He grabbed for his smartphone that was burried in piles of carelessly pushed aside documents.

"As I said. You're here now, aren't ya?" When he got his phone he chose to stay laid down on the floor and started typing something on the lightened screen.

A tiny transformed Kafka carefully made his way around and walked up on eye-level with Hoshina's face again. Once again overwhelmed by his current state of being, he let himself fall back on the floor and sat on the ground. "So... what should I do?"

"The first thing WE do is trying to make some calls. But since you seem to be in no life-threatening condition, we might have to wait 'till tomorrow for a first medical examination. If that's the case you'll stay, and I get you down to the lab first thing in the morning."

"Wait!" The tiny Kaiju made a suprisingly far jump right up to Hoshina's chest and pressed the (for him very big) red hang-up button on the screen with both paws. "You're right about that, I won't die this second from being tiny, so we might as well wait for tomorrow."

The questioning look on the opposite's face made a tiny Kafka look away and scratch his neck shyly. "Well, since you're ... I dunno,... I feel like, I can't have you be seen d-dru- .. like this by other officials of the 1st Division, b-because of me..."

A finger poked his forehead, which caused a tiny being like him to fall right back landing on warm soft fabric of Hoshina's shirt.

"Idiot. But you might be right about that."

Okay-ish indeed. Tiny and the souls are a bit on the edge, but with time and Kafka proving who he really as a person things gets better overall.

And you got no idea how Reno feels about just how deep this go. Its shocking enough your senior in the job is a kajiu hybrid. Learning he is also childhood friends with some of the most important people in the Third is another new spin in the shock. Much less they've know for years about Kafka's family secret.

Kikoru is no better when she finds out either. Might actually take it worse in some aspects even.

Oh, the three have gotten Kafka to dress up as a lizard a few times. Mostly on halloween. They even managed to get him into a dinosaur costume that with a simple rope and Okonogi dressing up as a palaeontologists won them second place in a event once. Kafka was very good at playing the role of a dino.

And well, being lizard brained at times is sometimes good, at least if you want a laugh. Once when Kafka was sunbathing, Soshiro found out while cleaning his swords that Kafka acts like a cat chasing a laser point when one of his swords got a bit of sunlight on it and made a light spot. Which Kakfa was quick to notice.

It was very hard for the swordman to not laugh his ass off as Kafka chased the little light all over. Making all kinds of sounds that Okonogi managed to record.

Speaking of which, the scientists are having a field day when Okonogi gives them some of the stuff she has noted and recorded. Thanks to that Kafka gets a small break from the crasyness that scientists are when they finally get a new toy to play with.

Also, that fucked up sea cucumber comes in handy with deterring the more dareing lot of scientists. As well as make Gen understand that when Mina, Soshiro or Okonogi says "Don't open that door!" or "We're saving your sanity.", fucking listen. The captain of the First was not able to sleep well for a week straight after seeing how Kafka has to clean his innards like once or twice a year. And had most of nightmares in store afterwards.

Kafka is just greatful the kids at least don't try this stunt at all. They seems to understand that whatever happens when Kafka close and lock the door, it means its best to leave him be unless they want to open pandora's box. So to say.

Kikoru would take it a bit worse since three important individuals in the Defense Force know about this. Especially considering she finds out after No. 9's attack, reveres Mina the most and Kafka seems to be some random geezer. She doesn't get to know part of his personality as he ain't taking the exams here.

Okonogi's research so far definitely gave our himbo some extra free time. Narumi is probably gonna take the Third Division's warnings more seriously after that horrific sight. Why do I have a feeling the Rookies are gonna dare each other to check in on Kafka or see what the hell he's doing behind closed doors?

Mina is gonna put him in a cat costume once she hears about the light chasing mishap. Especially if she finds out he can purr. Soshiro no doubt buys a laser pointer just to tease Kafka on some days.

im so glad to see this addition thank u so much omg just a few things i also wanted to add to this because its just been getting baffling? long rambling under cut

the fact that shes been in the defense force for YEARS (close to 10) and yet shes never? thought? to get another person weapon to fight smaller kaiju as you mentioned when her main "asset" is being able to shoot through monsters with accuracy and power thats never been known before... i mean yes she handles the standard guns quite well and it might be "good enough" but it wouldn't hurt to have an upgrade..? a second option..?

and from kikoru and hoshina we can see that it IS possible for officers to have more than one personal weapon (im seriously not counting the new cannon because that puts her FURTHER and FURTHER away from the battlefield) so its really odd that mina (or well, the author) never considered giving her a secondary weapon when she's clearing kaiju after the honju is down on the field anyway

its just really disappointing because when we finally got some insight on how she felt being "alone" during her earlier years it kind of just. stops there. she says shes still scared but does her job. and thats fair but its obvious mina had to have so many mental breakdowns as a rookie theres just SO MUCH to develop on??? not to mention her internal thoughts when shes in number 9 (kind of matching kikoru's fight where she got that mental attack, except mina had to be saved)

which is why i find it so odd that the fight is dragged out for THIS LONG but mina has yet to have the same moment kikoru, narumi, and hoshina all had where they "found their purpose/solified their ambitions".

i wanted to believe that in chapter 114 her losing her OG weapon she would've been ready (like hoshina) and had something backed up? but thats clearly not the case and its even WEIRDER that matsumoto is sidelining her when shes obviously (off screen) capable of rising to captain status and fighting on her own?

i genuinely thought that she'd follow the route of reno and kikoru who were saved by kafka once and proceeded to develop on their own (or in reno's case when he was being tested for no.6, with iharu's help) and also handle the fight herself (or at least, majorly herself) (but thats not even it. not even close.... she doesnt even get to participate in the fight?!)

i understand from a marketing POV its important to keep popular characters relevant to the story but the reason WHY mina isnt popular in the first place is because she was never given the chance to slowly develop or show up.. if it was her thing to be 'distant' then sure! but it wouldnt have hurt to showcase more of her power instead of just???? whatever the hell the past few volumes have been, really

very disappointing. very frustrating. im so sad.

mina, who fears being alone and is forced to fight from rooftops. mina, who feels horrible guilt over her troop members risking their lives for her. mina who is all of that but doesnt get the chance to fight alongside her officers when given the chance because ??????????????

i still cannot understand this how are you going to have mina appreciate her vice-captain and THEN move on from that and make her go “take care of kafka” whilst narumi and hoshina “take care of this” you’re absolutely insane for this. and it’s so fucking obvious matsumoto never cared about ashiro mina in his life.

she’s spent volume 4 (tachikawa base raid) up until volume 9/10 (where she got to use her new cannon) WITH NO FIGHTS. hoshina showed up to conduct trainings with kafka so there’s that. mina got NONE OF THAT. and from volumes 11-12 she doesn’t show up either since it’s kikoru, hoshina and narumi’s individual battles (WHICH THEY ACCOMPLISH ON THEIR OWN. EVEN IF THEYRE DYING.)

in volume 13 we get a bit of her backstory but once again she’s SAVED! by someone else and she doesn’t even fight on her own. god fucking lord.
