Okay, putting my hatred and disgust aside, can I share just one little nitpick with you guys...?
I'm not very fond of the designs for Tres Magia? Like, they look so... generic. As if they were someone's very first attempt in designing a Magical Girl.
Tumblr media
Let's go by parts, shall we?
Theme
At first, I assumed that they had a CYMK* naming theme, because one of them was Magia Magenta, but then you have Magia Azul/Azure (a little weird that it isn't Cyan, but okay...) and Magia Sulfur (which by the way, it's a chemical element)?! I get that they are shadings/gradients within a color spectrum, but it feels kinda disjointed overrall? You don't even need to give them color-related powers, just give them names that properly send the message that they are a team!
*If we're following PreCure rules here, then that would make Utena Magia Black, the Sixth Ranger/Mid-Season Cure adjacent.
Fashion
Not only the outfits are plain-looking and boring, there is zero individuality in them, as if they were copy-pasted and only had their colors changed. Uniformization is no excuse for laziness, as series like Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon and Happiness Charge PreCure for example, had set a design pattern, but had let plenty of room for uniqueness (as seen in gloves, shoes and etcetera).
Subtlety/Disguise/Incognito
You'd think that given the popularity of PreCure in Japan, there'd be a lingering influence within MahoAko, right? WRONG. The girls' alter-egos and civilian selves look the exact same, no difference between them; all they get is some magic clothes plus wands and call it a day (the same goes for the villains*). We're no longer in the 90's/2000's, folks.
*Speaking of the villains, why do they get more detailed costumes and the heroines don't?!
Anyways, I'm giving too much credit to this shitshow, but please, if you're gonna make a Magical Girl parody, pull some effort in it!

In keeping with my plan to watch more of Gen Urobuchi's shows (by which I mean anything he wrote at least two-thirds of the episodes for, instead of consulting), I started Kamen Rider Gaim and have watched the first two episodes. Thoughts:
I don't have much experience with tokusatsu as a genre, outside of watching the first half of Kamen Rider Den-O, some cultural osmosis about Power Rangers (the American version of the Super Sentai franchise), and parodies like Special Combat Unit Shinesman. Still, it was striking how many of the tropes were familiar, to the point where it feels like Kamen Rider Gaim is a magical girl show starring a grown man.
And the reason for this is that the magical girl genre was heavily influenced by tokusatsu in the '90s--Sailor Moon drew heavily on the genre's tropes, giving what had previously been a masculine genre a feminine approach. A team of color-coded warriors in matching outfits showing up to battle outrageous cartoon monsters and save the day by striking power poses and calling out their attacks? Yeah, that's tokusatsu in a nutshell. Prior to Sailor Moon, magical girls tended to work solo and transform into cute witches and pop idols instead, but the new vision was so popular that it eclipsed all that in the popular imagination, to the point that it's what first comes to mind when most people think about mahou shoujo as a genre.
Anyway, people made a lot of fuss about the Urobutcher writing for Kamen Rider when he was best known for dark magical girl anime, but to me, it's not that much of a stretch. The toys and the aesthetic are different--more sci-fi/mecha than frills and sparkles, and stuntmen wailing on each other with plastic swords and transparent special effects rather than animation, but the core is remarkably consistent across seemingly disparate genres.
The real way you can tell Urubuchi wrote this particular story is 1) DJ Exposition is very clearly an authorial favorite, and b) at least one of the swords doubles as a gun.

When I was exploring the Power Rangers franchise again, I learned of 2 manga series that parody the franchise. Along with one that has similarities to “The Boys” there is another one, a romantic comedy series called "Love after World Domination". Despite my history with the genre, the series was pretty good thanks to the Power Ranger theme of the series, and that the main couple was already together so you don't have to deal with the BS plot point of waiting a long ass time for them to get together and the very END of the series.
It’s also just long enough that it doesn’t stay around too long and though I'm glad about that, I am shocked that (spoilers) not only did we never see their confirmed "Megazord" BUT the writer never did a bigger arc with the 6th ranger storyline. Heck while reading the series, I came up with a prediction for one that I think it would have been good compared to what we got.
The arc would be about how after realizing they are not getting anywhere with the current team and the bad guys are getting stronger, the professor of the Rangers decides to get a 6th member. He finds a good choice who everyone soon loves, especially when he does something heroic HOWEVER this was just a way for the 6th Ranger to earn their trust as he has his own plans, which he quickly takes into effect when he easily realizes that the Red Ranger and Skull Princess are dating.
He eventually finds the perfect moment to reveal this news to not only the other Rangers but also the media, and as a result the Red and Pink Ranger (as Pink also knew about the relationship but kept it a secret) get kicked out and the positions are filled by the 6th Ranger and a new lady who is secretly an accomplice of the 6th Ranger. This news also gets Skull Princess kicked out of the evil organization.
Though free to date, the lives of the former Ranger and princess are pretty much ruined, even there families are being effected by this, which eventually causes them to have a big fight and maybe decide to take some time away from the other, even though the don't want to.
With Red and Princess gone, the 6th Ranger leads the team and easily defeats the evil organization, but this is when he reveals that HE is going to take over the world using the Ranger's and Evil Organization’s own arsenal to do it. We then get an arc where the 6th Ranger and his accomplice fight both groups and how no one is a match for him even when the two groups pull off some cleaver moves, but of course after Red and SP return after making up with themselves and their teams, they defeat the 6 Ranger. We then get an epilogue (again spoilers) similar to the original where the evil organization has been stopped but after how effective they are, the government lets them serve their time as a new defense force allowing the Rangers to live there own lives and Red and SP have a happy ending.
For those that have read the series, would you have like to have seen this happen?

Ultimate Playlist: Men’s Names, E
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel Three songs in one, this fan favorite features The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie, popular high school sweethearts who married but had financial troubles and eventually divorced.
Eddie’s Coming Out Tonight by Night Ranger Eddie likes to rock and roll. He lives better than he can afford to, has a crazy girlfriend, has it in for you, and is coming out tonight.
Eddie’s Concubine by Eddie From Ohio Sung by the woman Eddie has an ongoing affair with, the song describes a middle-aged, overweight, sleazy nightclub owner. He keeps promising he’ll leave his wife for her, but never does, so she pulls a gun on him.
The Ballad of Eddie Praeger by Paul and Storm An Irish epic in the style of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald about a drunk in a pub bathroom who does battle with a urinal cake.
My Baby’s In Love With Eddie Vedder by “Weird Al” Yankovic The singer is jealous because his girl is infatuated with the lead singer of Pearl Jam.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot Another epic ballad, this one chronicles the tragic, final voyage of the bulk carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald, named after the president and chairman of the board of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company that contracted Great Lakes Engineering Works to design and build the longest ship on the Great Lakes.
Elijah’s Song by Neil Diamond A lullaby for his grandson, the song references Neil’s son Jessie, who has his own music career, and Elijah’s mother, actress Sheryl Lee,.
Saint Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) by Joh Par This song is the main theme from the 1985 film by the same name. Saint Elmo’s Bar is where the characters in the movie hang out, but Saint Elmo’s Fire is a weather phenomenon where a corona discharge from a ship’s mast creates luminous plasma, resulting in a blue or violet glow. This effect is named after St. Erasmus of Formia (also known as St. Elmo), the patron saint of sailors.
Elvis is Everywhere by Mojo Nixon This psychobilly song deifies Elvis Presley while labeling Michael J. Fox as the Anti-Elvis. Elvis is the one who built the pyramids and stonehenge, and he’s taking boats from the Bermuda Triangle.
Velvet Elvis by “Weird Al” Yankovic A style parody of The Police, this song glorifies the tacky art trend as much as it does the singer.
Sincerely, Me by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul This is the song from which the 2015 musical Dear Evan Hansen takes its name. The main character, Evan, creates a series of fake emails in an attempt to convince Connor Murphy’s parents that he and Connor had been friends before Connor committed suicide.
Dr. Evil by They Might Be Giants Written for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. When your name is Evil, that is good, or so you think, but you’re so very wrong.

What’s Yours Is Now Mine
There is a very old saying here in the Monster World, don’t take things which belong to other people and that includes ideas, now Nathan created some werecreature parody personas for his stories but there were people that tried to make fun of him and rip off his creations, one such person thought it was a clever idea to rip off his photomanips and claim they as her own original ideas, of course these so called original ideas consisted of taking a vehicle or animal and giving them freakish cartoon eyes and painting them green, all of them would make some of the stupider monsters on Power Rangers seem legitimately scary by comparison. Nathan’s thoughts on this person were as follows…’Oh boy, another fail troll wannabe from the daloli-verse who thinks they’re edgy, clever and funny. Quit while you’re ahead.’ ‘You do realize you need to shut up, right?’ ‘Don’t tell me what to do, as someone who does actual werecreature related work and is friends with an actual werecreature, I find this portrayal offensive.’ ‘If I was a failtroll you’d ignore me.’ ‘Which is the point of people like you to be honest, like if you want to be ignored, fine but don’t act like i’m not doing it to you, since you asked for it.’
“Whatever, my work is original and clever.”
“Oh yes…because ripping off Turbo Teen and Christine is totally original”.
“I am afraid I don’t get it.”
“And really, a were-ape? The creator of Dragon Ball just called, he wants his Oozaru back.”
‘Well…at least I don’t claim i’m a werecreature…’ ‘I don’t claim to be a werecreature but I know one, a Werebelushi to be exact who is more than just annoyed by this sort of thing but once I tell him, he will be beyond super pissed and he will bring you to justice.’ ‘You don’t scare me.’ ‘Oh but you will be scared.’ ‘What are you going to do, block me?’ ‘I will do more than that, just you wait.’ Of course this stubborn blowhard did not believe he was capable of supernatural vengeance but that was her achilles heel so to speak, so he was so arrogant and stubborn she often underestimated her foes, the so called QueenWere-Bitch (real name: Quweesha as she called herself was nothing more than a petty fool.
An hour later Matthias/Werebelushi In The Shades arrived and boy was he pissed. ‘You stole Nathan’s ideas? You made a mockery out of werecreatures? Well then you shall be in for a world of pain. Not from me of course but from my friend.’ ‘Your friend?’ ‘Oh yes, the Were-Aykroyd. He is a twisted genius who knows what to do with people like you, he knows how to bend you and break you.’
Of course Quweesha as she was called didn’t believe it but later that night, she was about to post another hateful photomanip when she was visited by said Were-Aykroyd, but in spirit form…’Looks like i’ve caught the culprit. Quwueesha, you are under arrest.’ ‘What for? Being an awesome troll?’ ‘Oh no, for stealing other people’s characters, you took the werecreatures of Nathan’s and did poorly made rip-offs of them and for that you shall be arrested.’ ‘Whatever, that were-freak deserves it.’ ‘Sounds like you’re the one who needs to learn a lesson, you are the one who deserves it.’ ‘This has to be a joke, right?”
“I don’t joke around, pretending to be someone else’s original creation is a serious offense.”
‘Says the comedian.’ ‘I take myself extremely seriously, thank you very much, the problem is…you’re not contemptuous of yourself so you have to steal someone else's characters and make them into unoriginal knockoffs, you might as well just call them NFTs.’ ‘They aren’t NFTs.’ ‘You literally have a green ape and a green car with teeth, those are NFTs.’
“How dare you.,”
‘Well if you are not going to do good things with this ability of yours, I might as well abruptly take something from you.’ ‘What would that be?’ ‘Your body of course.’ He took on a transparent form as he entered her body, diving into her mouth and down her throat, causing her stomach to gurgle as it pushed against her trashy looking top.
Her top which had what appeared to be an NFT version of Pinkie Pie but with green hair slowly began to tear as her stomach bulked up and broadened, developing brownish hairs on it as her breasts retracted into her chest, brown hairs slowly developed on her chest and torso as her sleeves tore up due to her arms which bulked up, her gloves tore apart too as her hands enlarged. ‘What are you doing to me?’ ‘Well since you won’t be needing this body of yours for a while I am going to borrow it, and by that I mean use it to my advantage.’
She groaned a little as her back broadened and her hips retracted in size and her privates altered to the more manish variant as she slowly shot up in height to 6’2 as her shoulders broadened and her hair darkened, her DNA also altered a bit. ‘Demons are always fun to toy with.’ The Were-Aykroyd quipped. ‘They have the power to mess with people in all sorts of ways and so do I. I am going to enjoy messing with you, and making you mine, since you don’t care about keeping what is yours.’
“This hardly seems fair.”
“Luckily for me, it is fair that you get what you deserve.”
At this point she was deeply regretting everything she had said, she realized that now she was the one having something taken from her…as her hairline altered and her brow altered, her feet had also grown larger as they burst out of her shoes and she looked behind to see her rear had plumped up. ‘You made me overweight.’ ‘No, the term you are looking for is thicc.’
She groaned as she saw two of the toes on her feet sticking together, giving her the appearance of having webbed toes as her eyebrows thickened and one of her eyes turned from icy blue/whitish to green while the other turned brown, her nose broadened, and developed a cleft down the middle as her features altered to resemble his. ‘I look like you!’ ‘Why yes, you do and you look quite dashing. Of course I am going to have to do something about your damaged clothes. Yeah, it happens all the time with Nathan too, don’t worry, having my powers isn’t so bad. You do get enhanced intelligence and superhuman strength after all, two in one, smart, and able to be badass at the same time.’ ‘I hope you are going to do something about the clothing damage.’ ‘It happens all the time with most Were-Aykroyd transformations, unfortunately, but you’ll get used to it.’
She coughed as her voice contorted and warped, making her sound like Dan Aykroyd as her transformation completed, her mind didn’t change completely but she felt like apologizing. ‘I am sorry I did this to Nathan and that I insulted your Werebelushi friend.’ ‘I should hope so, anyhow..apology accepted. However, you are now permanently a Were-Aykroyd, don’t worry, you’re not going to be stuck like this forever.’
“I’m not?”
“Oh no…you’re probably thinking it’s going to be the full moon ordeal but it’s not.”
‘It’s not a full moon ordeal?’ ‘Oh no, basically a Were-Aykroyd does turn at night but also when it gets dark and sometimes it’s into a different Aykroyd character, oh and don’t worry, we don’t eat people or anything and aren’t hive-minded. We are not akin to zombies or anything.’ ‘So I won’t have to eat brains or anything?’ ‘Oh lord no, why would I eat brains? Unless it wasn’t actual brains of course.’
“So do I have to look out for Buffy or Van Helsing or anything?”
“Only one enemy you have to look out for, Frohmeyer…”
“Vic Frohmeyer?”
‘Yes, him…he’s got his eyes on that cursed screenplay that connects all Dan Aykroyd characters together.’ ‘That sounds dangerous.’ ‘In his hands, it will be. I cannot even begin to imagine what will happen if he gets his hands on it.’
“So I have to keep it safe?”
‘Yes, you can start by joining the family of a certain fellow Were-Aykroyd, look for Dan, he hangs out in the Spirit Halloween store that isn’t too far from Greasey Jake’s.’ ‘I shall look for him there, then.’ ‘Good, tell him you want to be a member of his family.’ ‘Yes sir!’
And thus with that, the new ‘Were-Aykroyd’ who was still the person she used to be only reformed, went out to seek Dan the King Were-Aykroyd in hopes of joining his family, eventually she did join the family as a new member and got used to her new powers, of course she had to keep it a secret from her friends.

National Lampoon’s Men in White (1998)
Film review #537
Director: Scott P. Levy
SYNOPSIS: Two low-ranking garbage men are abducted by aliens that intend to launch a full-scale invasion of earth. They manage to escape, but are immediately recruited by the government to put a stop to the invasion. However, there are mysterious forces at work that do not want them to succeed...after all, who would put two garbage men in charge of saving the world?
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: National Lampoon’s Men in White is a 1998 sci-fi comedy film that is unsurprisingly a parody of the 1997 film Men in Black. The film centres around two garbage men, Roy DuBro and Ed Klingbottom, who are abducted by aliens led by Glaxxon, who intends to invade the Earth with his army. They manage to escape the alien’s clutches, but are almost immediately recruited by the government to stop the invasion by Dr. Strangemeister, who has secretly selected the lowest, most inept government officials to deal with the invasion and fail, since he is secretly working with them. The film is, as the title suggests, a parody of the man in Black film that was released a year earlier, but it is a very loose parody, poking fun at other science-fiction films including Independence Day. The plot is very simple, but it’s just a vehicle for all the gags and comedy, so it’s easy enough to follow. The one thing I’m not sure about is who this film is really aimed at: it has a P.G. rating, and there’s no real adult humour or language, but there’s a fair amount of references that younger viewers probably wouldn’t get. If you’re watching it as a Men in Black parody, there’s enough references throughout the film, and plenty of visual gags that, while nothing special, are still decent. There’s a fair amount of more subtle gags, such as the scenery changing through the President’s windows every scene, which is quite funny, and it reminds me of the Naked Gun films in that no one ever references them. The mix of visual gags, fourth-wall breaking, and slapstick humour is a lot of different techniques that makes threading the film as a whole together problematic; but again, as it’s a comedy-parody film, you can probably just enjoy it for the different gags. Having the National Lampoon’s title attached to it also suggests it would be targeted for an older audience as many of the films are, but I don’t think this is meant to be the case.
The film was produced by Saban International, who most notably do the Power Rangers series, and the aliens and effects definitely have that look and feel about them. Karim Prince, who plays Roy DuBro, also starred in one of the Power Rangers series. There’s a decent mix of CG that doesn’t look too bad for the time, and practical effects that work fairly well. Overall, the film is a mish-mash of different gags that doesn’t really tie together too well, but has a few good jokes (like the scene which makes fun of the Men in Black “neuralyser” that wipes memories). I think the cast is decent enough (apart from the lazy German stereotype of Dr. Strangemeister), but they’re not given too much to do other than delivering bad jokes. It’s not a gripping film, and there’s very little of substance, But I guess for a family film there’s different references and humours for different viewers so I suppose that’s good? I’m not sure anyone who hasn’t watched Men in Black or Independence Day or the like will really appreciate or enjoy it, and it’s references make it a dated film that diminish the humour of the film to modern viewers.

I was just gonna leave this in the tags, but I thought I’d talk about Red’s unspecified trauma disorder.
Red clearly has PTSD from witnessing his dad get mortally injured and left to die in a self-sacrificial mission. In fact, the very first thing we see in The Wonderful 101 is Red solemnly thinking about the event. After 20 years, Red has not been able to move on and develop a sense of humor about it or be able to talk about it freely (he could have put Blue in his place much sooner if he had just told Blue his story, but he didn’t. This could either be because of Red’s humbleness or he cannot stand to talk about the event).
Additionally, Red developed a guilt complex, blaming himself for what happened to his father despite the fact that he was only five-years-old at the time. He is still burdened with undeserved self-doubt and extreme humility, which he displays when questioning himself over the name of his own planet when an alien mistakenly calls it “Dearth”, and again when Green demands respect from Red, insisting Red tell him how well he did on the entrance exams, Red then replies modestly with his honest scores, which were record breaking good. Green then changes his approach and keeps demanding Red respect him on only the merit of having more experience, to which Red humbly agrees, despite being appointed leader of the team and having full right to be the one demanding respect from a child like Green. Not to mention the scene in Neo Mu where Blue insults Red immediately after Red came to his aid, prompting Pink to stand up for Red, which Red actually discourages, as though he feels Blue is at least within reason to be frustrated over having such an inexperienced leader. Though it is worth mentioning that, by the end of the game, Red finds his confidence as the leader and quite literally starts pushing Blue around.
Red shows PTSD symptoms in his hyper-vigilance. He is significantly jumpier and more animated than all the other characters. This is a reference to the super sentai genre the game parodies, where characters will be excessively loose in their body language because their faces are covered by masks (think: Power Rangers). However, it’s also a weirdly fitting attribute for a character with PTSD, who may be hyper-aware of potential threats around them, and will be jumpier and more anxious. This most likely wasn’t intended by the developers to be an implication of Red’s mental conditions, but regardless of intention, the connection can be made.
There is also evidence that Red experiences flashbacks to the traumatic event of his father’s death. We could assume that from a story telling standpoint, we see flashbacks as the game progresses as a means to understand Red’s character and motivations. But, it appears Red may actually be seeing these flashbacks when they happen in-game. In Operation 009-C after fighting Wonder-Jergingha, Jergingha punches the Wonderful-Ones and knocks Red and the others out of their CENTINEL-Suits, launching Red onto the ground, dragging himself along to reach his Wonder-Pendant. He sees Luka hiding, which triggers a flashback. Now, what’s interesting about this flashback is that Red has a physical reaction to it, where not only does he lift his head a little like he’s noticing something, but his expression changes from a snarling pained expression, to a blank stare. Whether or not Red is actually experiencing these flashbacks that we’re watching play-out is not clear, but it is a possibility.

So I was reading through your Super Star Sentai tag and I thought of something ✨amazing✨ (and cruel)
So since this is a parody of Sentai like Power Rangers then we can have the trope of where they defeat the Villain (Star Paragon/Kirby) at the end of the 1st season
(With an awesome duel between Kirby and Meta that may end a little…gory…for Meta)
But when I sat defeat I mean more of…driven off like he had his fun now he's gonna go tell his friends about this sick planet
(of course, the heroes don't know that they just think he's gone)
Now everything is hunky-dory for however long the time skip is
And then it goes straight to hell the moment Season 2 starts
Because who else to recommend this banger planet to then Kirby's best friend and brother
Shadow Kirby
Now in true Sentai fashion, this new villain is much much more dangerous
But how do you make a villain who can easily mist a guy with nary but a wave
By making him decently smarter, much more of a planner, and with a dollop of sadism
If Paragon is the kid who squishes bugs on the sidewalk when walking, Shadow is the kid who floods ant holes and burns them with a magnifying glass when they try to escape
(From what I understand Kirby is essentially just playing with earth casually while Shadow is playing competitively)
Which could be a perfect way to get the B-Team animal friends (Nago, Pitch, ChuChu)
Actually, I have the hilarious idea of Paragon going out for errands, seeing this crisis on Earth, fixing it, getting a little too invested playing with this toy, and quickly pawning it off to Shadow when he needed to finish his chores
I meant dismemberment and then mandatory cybernetics with the gory part of the duel
SHADOW KIRBY. OH NO ...Never in a million years would I have thought to use him (I drew Shadow Kirb exactly one time a few years ago and then basically forgot he existed). ^^ And in this context it's kinda brilliant, because Star Paragon's one weakness is his apathy: at the end of the day, he doesn't really care about Earth one way or the other. The natural step-up from him would be a villain with the same amount of fearsome power, who actually does want to see Earth burn. ⚆.⚆ Even if I don't use this idea, I kinda want to draw what a Shadow Paragon might look like. ^^ If nothing else, it'd be a fun design exercise.
BTW, I like the idea of Star Paragon going around telling other potential invaders about all the fun he had on Earth after his defeat. XD It's very in-character: innocent intentions, apocalyptic consequences~
'Mandatory cybernetics'...could you be hinting at a sort of Mecha Knight event in this AU??? ⊙ヮ⊙ BECAAAAAAAAAUSE--!!!! ...Okay, in all seriousness, I actually already considered this. ^^; And I decided I didn't want to do it because there's a...future thing, that's going to happen that's kind of the focus of the story, and I think MK going from his position on that to 'the dark side' would be: (a) a little out of character (b) basically rehashing the character arc of someone else who has much stronger motives for turning to the dark side than he ever will Although I do like the concept of a Mecha Knight, and this AU's setup is so perfect for it...hmm... ...wait, what if I used DMK instead

What made you write your WIP?
Thank you!! all asks combined into one post as per usual :3
Some of these are gonna be interesting, considering I mainly write fanfic :"D
1. What made you write your WIP? I write because I have something I want to play around with. Either a character concept, or a world, or a plot. Other details can always come later
9. Who is your favourite character to write? I love writing Crowley, he brings light-hearted joking to everything I add him to. Writing austistic!Halt in particular is super fun because it's incredibly self-indulgent
18. Give a brief character description of your main characters. Aaaaand this is the one that's interesting! Because I mainly write fanfic. So I'm gonna cover Halt, Ferris, and Caitlyn and how they differ in The Royal Ranger from their canon depictions :D
Halt: Actually I haven't changed all that much. He's incredibly autistic-coded in canon, so I just added a couple of traits. Mainly what I've been doing is writing him as younger than he is in canon, because this takes place over fifteen years before the main series. He's got a deep-seated need to help people, even if he doesn't know them all that well, and this often puts him at odds with his parents, who think he's got other things to be focusing on instead
Ferris: In canon, the brief bit we see of Ferris is weak-willed, spineless, cowardly, and other synonyms for "bastard". Honestly, I found it to be a little bit of a let-down. So for TRR, I made him manipulative and cruel, having no use for anyone who's not able to do something for him. He wants power, as well as any advantage he can get over Halt. He's also apt to twist anything and everything as being some kind of slight against him, so he keeps thinking Halt absolutely hates him when Halt is just being autistic
Caitlyn: Caitlyn was a blank slate, because she never actually appeared in canon and only gets a brief mention as believing Halt was in danger when no one else did. I've made her chronically ill, very sweet, but absolutely determined to support Halt. She's one of the only people Halt can go to for absolutely anything and, currently, the only person who's both very familiar with Halt's autistic tendencies and willing to support and accommodate him (Crowley is willing to accommodate Halt, but doesn't know his autism well enough yet)
26. What is the worst writing advice in your opinion? On a purely personal level, I hate the advice that using the present tense is good to give a sense of immediacy. I dunno why, but I'm completely and utterly incapable of reading the present tense for any more than a sentence or so at a time. I have to mentally rewrite everything I read in it back to the past tense, which is so exhausting that the writing falls utterly flat
On a more broadly-applicable level, "show, don't tell" has been so over-applied, especially in YA, that a lot of writing has started sounding incredibly overwrought, like those parodies of 1940s film noir that you hear all the time

This tabletop roleplaying game, which we’re calling ACE! with an exclamation point, is one of fast, cinematic, action comedy. To play you need a handful of six-sided dice, a pen, and some paper. Each player plays one Hero, except for one player who takes the role of the Director.
Tumblr media
Think of ACE! as an irreverent, fun-packed movie. You might play as ghost hunters in New York City, a band of plucky galactic guardians, vampire slayers, or soldiers of fortune in the Los Angeles underground. Heck, you might even be cartoon animals. Good grief!
This is a multi-dimensional, time-hopping, genre-mashing, pan-galactic portal into any type of adventure you can imagine! Want to play in a fantasy world full of elves and orcs? Crew a starship as it explores the galaxy? Hunt vampires in Victorian London? Play as animal detectives, robot cowboys, wizards, ninjas, or time traveling bounty hunters?
The only limit is your imagination, and the requirement that you have fun.
Tumblr media
This Kickstarter is for the full five-book set.
What? Five books, you say? Fear not -- they're pretty small books! They include the core rules, and four hilarious genre-hopping adventures. Each book is about 30 pages long. Except for one which is longer, but we wrote 'BUMPER SIZE ISSUE' on the front of that, so it's OK. If you’ve ever held a comic-book in your hand, the Awfully Cheerful Engine! will feel very familiar!
The core rulebook is just 30 pages in a bright, colorful comic-book sized format. We even gave it an issue number, like a comic-book! After that, each 'issue' is a standalone adventure, designed for one-shots or short campaigns with new characters each time. One week you might be fighting ghosts on the streets of Manhattan, and the next you might be exploring the frontiers of space in your trusty starship!
You don't have to play them all, or in order. The standalone format means you can fit them in whenever and however you feel like it. GM can't make your regular game? Go bust some ghosts instead! Pickup game at a convention? Investigate the strange goings-on in a small American town in the 1980s. Running a livestream? Board a starship and fight the Kulkan Empire! Play one of them, some of them, or all of them! It's up to you!
Tumblr media
Are they comics? Or are they RPGs? (They're RPGs)
ACE #1: Introducing the Awfully Cheerful Engine! With a foreword by Ghostbusters RPG author Sandy Petersen, this book tells you the rules, how to create your Heroes, and gives you a bunch of Extras (NPCs & monsters) to use. By Russ Morrissey.
ACE #2: Spirits of Manhattan. Strap on your Anti-Plasm Particle Thrower, grab your Electromagnetic Field Detector, and jump into your Ghostmobile. New York City needs your help! By Dave Chapman and Russ Morrissey.
ACE #3: Montana Drones & The Raiders of the Cutty Sark. At the request of Army Intelligence, Montana Drones and her team travel the globe in search of lost or hidden artefacts, often exploring dangerous sites and racing against hostile enemy agents to keep the objects of their quests from falling into the wrong hands. Striking locations, exciting chases, dangerous enemies and monotonous classroom lectures await! By Marc Langworthy.
ACE #4: Strange Science. Welcome to Wilden Falls, your average American town in the heart of the country. Surrounded by trees, nature, and there’s a wonderful waterfall that brings the tourists. It’s a quaint little town. Until weird things start happening at the local research facility, people go missing, and there’s a sudden influx of fitness nuts in the town. That’s before we get to the time travel, bodysnatching, and portals to other dimensions. Maybe ‘strange’ isn’t strong enough a word for it! By Dave Chapman.
ACE #5: Beam Me Up! These are the voyages of the starship FSS Brazen. Its continuing mission: to recklessly go where plenty of people have probably been before… and hope a major interstellar incident isn’t sparked in the process. In this highly illogical adventure for the ACE! roleplaying game, you’ll explore frontiers you never thought you had. By Marc Langworthy.
Tumblr media
We give you four adventures to start with, and we have plans for more, but there's also a free compatibility license so anybody can write and publish material powered by the Awfully Cheerful Engine!
Tumblr media
Hardy Hobbit. Teenage Samurai. Cheerful Stuntman. Clumsy Vampire. Squeamish Ghost. Who knew you could say so much in just two words? The possibilities are endless.
It’s not just Awfully Cheerful! It’s fast and fun, too!
You won’t get bogged down in endless rules and character sheets that look like tax forms. Your ACE! ID Card contains everything you need to know, and it’s only about the size of a credit card! But don’t try to spend it. It’s not a real credit card. Honestly, we tried, and it didn't end well.
Tumblr media
You can download blank ID cards from our website. Don’t worry, there’s a printer-friendly black-and-white version too!
Making your Hero takes about five minutes. And that includes a coffee break.
You can choose from an array of talking animals, alien and fantasy species, and occupations from a bunch of genres. Play a cat, a crow, or a turtle. An alien, an elf, a robot, or a vampire. A knight, a pirate, or a wizard. An astronaut, a burglar, a reporter, or a spy. The core book has dozens of Roles to get you started with, and each adventure book introduces more!
Even better, you can already use our online character builder and make a character in about 30 seconds! It's so quick! Give it a try! And if you felt like sharing your Hero on Twitter with the hashtag #awfullycheerful and a link to this page, well, we'd be most awfully grateful!
Tumblr media
                                       Build your Hero online!
Alternatively, each adventure comes with its own selection of pre-generated characters. If you don't want to make your own characters, you can simply use those - perfect for one-shots or new players!
Tumblr media
Download the pre-gens for all four adventures from the official website!
Tumblr media
In A.C.E! each Hero (that's you!) has a Role. Your Role gives you a special ability only you can use. Here's a quick look at some of the Roles you can play!
Talking animals like Ape, Cat, Crow, Dog, Kangaroo, and Turtle.
Species like Alien, Dwarf, Elf, Ghost, Goblin, Golem, Hobbit, Monster, Ogre, Robot, Vampire, and Werewolf.
Fantasy roles like Alchemist, Assassin, Barbarian, Cleric, Druid, Knight, Ninja, Outlaw, Pirate, Ranger, Samurai, Slayer, and Wizard.
Occupations like Actor, Archeologist, Astronaut, Athlete, Bounty Hunter, Boxer, Burglar, Chef, Con Artist, Cowboy, Detective, Doctor, Engineer, Gambler, Gangster, Hacker, Hermit, Inventor, Musician, Pilot, Priest, Professor, Reporter, Scientist, Smuggler, Soldier, Spy, Student, and Stuntman.
Even a couple of superheroes like Speedster and Vigilante!
Tumblr media
Yep, you can play a Ghost. You don’t take damage unless its from a holy source or some special sci-fi ecto-gadget. But you also can’t pick things up. So there’s that.
Each of the adventures adds some more Roles (or recommends some old ones)!
Spirits of Manhattan adds Ghost, Demonologist, Doctor, Engineer, Exorcist, Inventor, Priest, Professor, Scientist, and Student.
Raiders of the Cutty Sark adds Botanist, Double-Agent, Socialite, and Witch.
Strange Science adds Brain, Cheerleader, Outsider, Protector, Radio Presenter, and Tycoon.
Beam Me Up adds Captain, Chief Engineer, Comms, Hologram, Gunner, Counsellor, and Pilot.
Tumblr media
ACE! is a pretty fast, light game. If you played 1986's Ghostbusters RPG, you'll see the influence immediately.
Stats! The AWFULLY CHEERFUL ENGINE! is a d6 dice pool system*. You have four Stats -- Smarts, Moves, Style, and Brawn. If you have a Moves score of 3, you roll three six-sided dice when you try to jump a motorcycle over a ravine. If you roll high enough, you succeed. It's pretty simple!
Focuses! For each Stat you also have a Focus. For Smarts it might be a science, or chess, or history. For Style it might be bluffing, singing, or fashion, and for Brawn it might be brawling or swimming. You can choose from plenty of focuses. Foci. Focuses. Whatever.  Anyway, if the thing you're trying to do relates to a Focus, you get to roll an extra two dice.
Trait! You choose a trait, like Angry or Cheerful or Rebellious or Despondent. This, combined with your Role, makes you a Gullible Vampire, a Brave Turtle, or a Squeamish Scientist.
Karma! Finally, you have a bunch of Karma points. These can be spent for extra dice or to absorb damage from attacks, and they're recovered by using your trait.
*Fun fact -- did you know that 1986's Ghostbusters RPG, by Sandy Petersen, Lynn Willis and Greg Stafford, was the first ever dice pool RPG? Also Sandy Petersen has written an awesome foreword for the AWFULLY CHEERFUL ENGINE!
Tumblr media
What, I hear you ask, is a CALAMITY DIE?
The Calamity Die is how you find out that your friends really aren't your friends. You see, when you make a roll, one of those dice is a different color, and is called the Calamity Die. And if your roll fails, and also the Calamity Die rolls a 1, your so-called 'friends' decide what happens to you. It won't kill you or anything, but...
Well, we'll leave that thought with you.
Tumblr media
Nooooo! And it was all going so well!
Kickstarter campaign ends: Fri, June 18 2021 10:00 PM BST

Lessee, the comic that started it all published in 1984, I popped out the aether and into the world in '85. All of two earth rotation's worth years old when the iconic, original cartoon aired in 1987.
1990 rolls out in theaters at my ripe Turtlemania target audience age of 5. Fuckin' rip to me, ig. I was never gonna make it out alive. Seeing TMNT on everything, everywhere was like the entire first decade of my life. The sky and ocean are blue, fire trucks and the fast chucks are red, my school pencils and the sun were yellow and turtles were green... and also red, also blue, and purple, and orange.
Then there was the Out of the Shadows music tour, the Christmas album turtles, the Archie comics run... By 1991 with Secret of the Ooze came out and the minute I saw Kuya Ernie 'Surf Ninja' Reyes Jr. being froggy with The Shredder, I was insufferaaable. I was spin kicking and blade handing everything (didn't help Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired soon after).
God the 90s were just brimming with (child) martial artist TV shows and movies, weren't they.
I think one of the weirder things for me is that at its height in the 90s, the turtles occupied a very solid space of "Cool Older Kids" in my little TV-addled pre-internet head. In most of their incarnations, til Next Mutation, they started at 15 and aged from there. Comparatively I would still be in the single digits or freshly entering my preteens given any 90s iteration. In the Archie comics they got to age to their 30s, in Next Mutation they started at 17. I never considered the day I'd come to be "older than" the "Cool Older Kids" one day.
But also lol, they're make believe they're whatever age they need to be for whatever story they're in, canonical, fanmade, official or unofficial.
The other little thing I found strange as a child but understandable as an adult was I knew they parodied things. Made fun of stuff happening in other TV shows, pop culture in general. And as quintessentially 90s they were... the turtles who were meant to 90s teens at their height did not really seem much like teens I knew. Their slang seemed very Californian which tickled my little native Californian fancy but it contrasted with one of my only New York points of reference: Ghostwriter. As an adult now, I know back then it was the people in the show production, full adults, aping what Kids These Days seemed to be doing, what was popular to them (even if it wasn't). All seasoned with the in-jokes and pop references of their generation, which honestly makes me fucking holler when these new iterations do it with things from my time, re: Mutant Mayhem.
By the time I had access to the internet where I'd come to know fandom as I came to understand it then, Turtlemania had died down. Ninja Turtles: Next Mutation ended up only having the one season. And anime was just beginning to get clubs in middle schools. When I Iearned how to ask Jeeves to get anywhere all I wanted to know about was Sailormoon, Yuyu Hakusho, and Fushigi Yugi. I barely remember anything else I looked for if it wasn't anime-related.
Okay, TMNT Fandom.
I saw a post by a young fan saying that the Ninja ninja Turtles were now as old as their parents at forty. So I'd like to know who else is as old as or older than the ninja turtles franchise.
I'll start: in 1984 I was five years old. I saw the cartoon in 1988 and fell in love and I'm still there, in love. It's really deep. I don't think I can climb out.

I was tagged by @viola-ophelia eons ago but was never arsed to properly do the writing restrospection until now (mainly because I kept molding my responses in my head over and over until I reached satisfaction).
2021 FANFIC YEAR IN REVIEW
Word count:
Good question. I'd guess around 75,000 (counting unpublished works).
Fandoms:
Tolkien, naturally. And a bit of CLAMP (tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, more specifically)
Did you write more than you thought you would or less than expected?
More in terms of wordcount and unfinished, unpublished works; less in terms of published WIPs. I was surprised by my own creativity, but I'm annoyed as well. I don't like to have too many things to deal with at once. At the moment, I'm guilty of asking people prompts, but it was a writing exercising for me to improve my stories (to my own standards).
What's your own favourite story of the year?
I'm mixed between The Lord of the Rocks (my current masterpiece, a parody of the Silmarillion following The Lord of the Rings' quest/premise) and Le Prince des Plaines (oneshot of Legolas travelling with the Rangers, Elladan and Elrohir. Pre-Hobbit and pre-LotR. A fic in French because it's my language.) The untitled Melkor/Fingolfin story (unpublished, wip) is the one I am the most invested emotionally and intellectually speaking, because I deal with my favourite topics: fate, fatality, religious devotion, mythology. As you can see, the CLAMP influence is creeping in.
Fanfiction goals for the new year?
Finish The Lord of the Rocks;
Finish The Portrait (a Fingon-centric fanfiction that causes me much grief, because I challenged myself to write Russingon despite not shipping Maedhros and Fingon together. I can't stand Fingon's personality, we're not compatible the slightest. I do objectively recognise his qualities, but he annoys me on a personal level. I'm however taking pleasure in discussing issues of the sloppily built class system of Tirion, and the longing for a muse (Fingon is a painter in this story));
Finish my tsubasa fic;
Hopefully write up to 75% of the Melkor/Fingolfin story;
Start the Fingolfin/Hador story (that's essentially a colonial story that's heavily inspired by the series Vikings. Master/servant, enemies to allies dynamics, reversal of power play as Marach's people take possession of more lands to counter Ñoldorin, mostly Fëanorian, expansion. I want to write some good ol' action story, despite that I'm not the best at it).
If I can ever think of a RG Veda story, I'd be delighted. Kendappa-ōu/Souma is the pair I'd like to write about, but knowing myself, I'll write some Ashura-ōu crap (and fuck you, Taishakuten).
Most popular story of the year?
The Lord of the Rocks. Dear You is very close to have more kudos than lotrocks. Surprisingly. It's stupider and less plotty.
Most underappreciated story?
The Jewels.
Most fun story to write?
The Lord of the Rocks, duh.
Most unintentionally telling story?
If it's about grand questions, I would say The Jewels is more philosophical than I intended it. It started as a Mairon/Curufin oneshot, but then, I had some plot ideas. It's nevertheless an overall short story (16k words). (Ok, I wrote it in 2020, but arh.) The Melkor/Fingolfin story is intentionally telling about fate and the divine, which I did not plan with The Jewels, but it happened anyhow.
Biggest disappointment:
Being distracted by new story ideas.
Biggest surprise:
Being distracted by new story ideas. Heh.
Tagging @ismeneee / @ismeneeefangirlswaytoomuch yeehaw. And anybody else who'd like to do it, just say I tagged you and voilà.

Toku[-like] Tuesday 35: Dress Code: Latex
hey hey hey, hope everyone’s enjoyed today’s anime desk. @mogsk made this delightfully cute edit about it...
Tumblr media
We have plenty of great films to hit on Tuesdays to come, from the live action films of Mamoru Oshii such as Avalon, through more J-horror, and the rest of the filmography of Park Chan-Wook, to even a little something from here in the 28 Days series (a pair of zombie outbreak films which are, like all worthwhile British art, unremittingly bleak pictures of the state). And no doubt stuff I haven’t even heard of, or thought to show.
But tonight I want something that won’t require too much research since I have been writing about anime all day, so let’s return to our suit acting ruits with last year’s Canadian scifi parody-comedy, Psycho Goreman!
youtube
This is one that both @mogsk and @lyravelocity have recced to me at various points. As the trailer tells, two anything-but-innocent kids gain the power to control an evil galactic overlord, a lark which pulls them, naturally, into a grand and very bloody conflict - an environment they fall into very naturally. Shot on a shoestring budget, it’s been praised for making it count in every way, particularly in its sense of creature design.
As a parody it’s affectionately addressing both the disappeared American B-movie and that country’s Saturday morning TV, which means in a way it’s speaking to imported toku shows such as Power Rangers? The ‘mundane people pulled into a tropey scifi world’ premise also calls to mind Galaxy Quest, although from the looks of things hitting a slightly different vector of comedy. I regret that I can’t remember most of the things Alex said about its character dynamics except a general impression that they sounded very entertaining.
After that, we’ll return to actual honest-to-Godzilla tokusatsu, and catch up on Kamen Rider Revice! Where we left off, old fashy Fenix had successfully disbanded the mariachi-themed Deadmans before they could carry out sacrifices to summon their god - but most of the head Deadmans have escaped alive to start (I hear) some substantial arcs, and there’s no way Fenix are up to any good with all this. So let’s head back to the realm of colourful plastic and see where they take it next...
Toku Tuesday 35 is to start in the next ten minutes (before 8pm UK time) on twitch.tv/canmom !

It would probably be nice to note for the uninitiated with it that LISA: THE PAINFUL has like... pretty heinous racism in it. It's certainly not just 'dark humor', it's got violently inappropriate anti-native stereotypes in it, and you should probably warn folks about that!
OH YES THIS IS VERY VERY TRUE AND THANK U FOR REMINDING ME
yeah idk what the hell he was thinking with these designs but toward the mid-end of the game, there is a section of the game with characters that are clearly meant to be indigenous people and the whole thing is just. odd. the designs are pretty transparently racist, and he clearly did no research and just went with “generic tribal look” which is fucked, AND to make it worse the characters in this section all have red skin. its never explained in-canon but apparently the warriors paint their skin red using the sap of the trees they are protecting (blood trees), which is like... not really an excuse at all and is just kind of fucking terrible LMAO
there are a handful of indigenous characters outside of the bloodmoon tribe, none of which are much better (though they at least dont have red skin), but yeah this is a major failing of the game and it can be really fucking jarring given that race is not brought up at any other point. the only other racial commentary i remember is with salvation black, who is a parody of the black power ranger, and in that part he just says “no race jokes please!” which is a reference to the old rumor that the black power ranger quit bc he was a black man and was cast as the black suit. so its VERY fucking uncomfortable and not a fun section, but it luckily goes by very quickly

Do you have any ideas for Interactions between Marvel and Super Sentai/Kamen Rider heroes?
Oh, man. I’ve been thinking about this one, and it’s wild, because I haven’t put much consideration into what Marvel’s been up to in ages. The first thing I think of are those shots of Hemsworth and Hiddleston doing Great Saiyaman poses on the set of Dark World--not that Great Saiyaman is toku, poor guy’s a Kamen Rider parody by someone who does not know why people love Kamen Rider. Anyway, I think Loki might meet JK, The Boy Who Causes Problems On Purpose, and adopt him immediately.
Another thing that immediately comes to mind is an Iron Fist/Gekiranger crossover, which would be a pure delight--imagine Jan, Ran, and Retsu getting invited to compete in the Pinnacle of Heaven. You’ve got all these larger-than-life figures, Fat Cobra and the Bride of a Thousand Spiders and Dog Brother Number One and so on, and then Danny and Victor Alvarez show up with Victor’s new friends, this trio of very ordinary-looking twenty-somethings in colorful uniforms, who are very polite to everyone and then proceed to enter the ring together and turn into a furious tornado of roaring beasts.
My preferred vibe in general is magical heroes, and so of course now I’m thinking about which magical Marvel heroes might get along best with which toku folks. Billy Kaplan of the Young Avengers would be well-suited to a Magiranger team-up, ideally with Teddy at his side, and it would be extra fun because they’d talk about Power Rangers non-stop. Dr. Strange seems like more of a Wizard vibe, although I suspect that Haruto would initially distrust him as being too similar to Fueki.
Speaking of Young Avengers, Tommy Shepherd and the Go-Busters would vibe like nothing else.
Also, I can and will pay money to anyone who will draw me a picture of the Gokaigers meeting Corsair.
