So you know that post about Enigma's "Sadeness" going round, where everyone in the 90ies was into Gregorian Chants for a month?
It was NOT just a month.
The 90ies is a whole decade of unexpected and weird bangers which were based on combinations of synth, traditional instruments, traditional music, choral work and religious music. This is why there was always a whole section in shops called "New Age" (which pretty much meant "weird music we can't classify").
So Enigma releases "Sadeness" in 1990 and it becomes wildly popular in Europe. The band is still going strong apparently, though I haven't heard of any of their other music.
In 1993 in France, another Gregorian Chant banger came out: the soundtrack from a (terrible) comedy called Les Visiteurs.

If the theme sounds familiar, it's because in 1996 the composer Eric Lévy formed the band Era (also still going to this day) and the song "Ameno" was another banger. The album was apparently France's biggest musical export in 1996.

In 1994, another choral banger hit the charts. Written phonetically in a language that sounds like Latin, it was used in adverts and the album generally sold really well.

Okay so how was it possible for this many Latin-sounding choral work weird-ass bangers to get so popular? Well, IMO, someone paved the way for them.
Enya topped the charts for weeks in 1989 with her album Watermark and single "Orinoco Flow". Her music heavily relies on choral work, is heavily inspired by religious and classical music, with her own Irish spin on it. While "Orinoco Flow" sounds quite far from that dark Gregorian style, a number of lesser-known tracks definitely have a feel of it. This is my favourite from 1995, all in Latin (other notable ones are "Cursum Perficio" and "Tempus Vernum"):

And if you're one of those snobs poo-poohing Enya as "just cutesy ambient music", she is still Ireland's bestselling solo artist 35 years later, in spite of the fact that she doesn't tour and only releases an album every 5 years or so. She has influenced many artists, been used in soundtracks and sampled into several songs which themselves became hits. Her music is complex and varied - if you care to dig further than her singles.
And since it's Christmas, it's only appropriate for me to end with this gorgeous adaptation of a Christmas hymn:

1. What's your favorite Legendary Pokemon and why?
(I'm using these specific classifications as I answer your question)
So hot take but I don't really feel too strongly about most of the legendaries 💀 I seem to be more of a sub-legendary and mythical pokemon fan by happenstance, so I'm just gonna expand my response with them since I'm more interested in them.
Strictly Legendary:
I like Lugia and Mewtwo because of their respective movies, but I honestly think I'm most attached to Cosmog by a long shot. I don't have too much of an articulate answer behind as to why other than Gen 7 really nailed the landing with creating an attachment to the curious lil' thing and I love it so much :') I just love its personality, and would 100% love to keep it as a little pet and yell at it to get in the bag. xD
Sub-Legendary:
THIS THING. THIS THING GAVE ME HELL CATCHING IT IN MY FIRST D/P PLAYTHROUGH AND IT MADE ME WANT IT SOOOOOO BAD LOOOL
I really, really, really loved the concepts behind the lake trio and what they represented, and was particularly drawn to Mespirit at the time (although Uxie lowkey has the best cry). Nowadays the trio is almost neck-and-neck even, tbh.
I also have thoroughly enjoyed Ogerpon - she's the only legendary I've actually opted to use in my main team throughout all the gens because I got attached and didn't like the other grass pokemon options.
Blacephalon is also a weird take I can't explain. I love the chaos and variety of colors in its design. It just seems very chaotic and strange as is. OH, AND THE DOG TRIO FROM JOHTO. AND LATIOS AND LATIAS. GOD I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM IN EVERY MEDIA.
Mythical:
OOOOH this one is VERY close because I love, love, love the mythicals apparently. Celebi's connection to time, the movie, THE GAMES, and the overall atmosphere behind it is just 110% my kind of personal aesthetic lmao. Like I'd love to have this little fairy are you kidding me???
Shaymin is a very very close second. I love how it has two forms and love its connection to nature. My connection to this pokemon in particular also grew because I associate it with the late memory of someone close to me who passed away. I think of them with this pokemon, so it holds an extra sentiment.
Otherwise I really really really also love Mew (fight me) and Jirachi is awesome because WISHES??? Bangers.
2. If you could Kieran any legendary (other than the Gen 9 legends), which would you give and why?
Lol you're so based for excluding the gen 9 mons, lets go.
Strictly Legendary:
Helloooo Gen 5 fans LMAO. I really feel like there's a lot of unspoken poetry between Kieran & the player with Reshiram/Zekrom parallels. I could honestly see Kieran holding either legendary relatively well from a symbolic standpoint, but Zekrom seems to fit him a bit more imo. He's quite motivated through his ideals to find a truth he wants to see - whether it be "the Ogre being misunderstood" before it was verified, his concepts for what makes a capable trainer and respectable or valued person, and his desires to prove himself. He gets a little too lost in his visions to the point where they cloud his perception and his judgement is ultimately soured; he's desperate to compete and externals it on the player, but in reality he's competing with the standard of an ideal he thinks he himself should be.
Sub Legendary:
I don't mean to pull too much from the lake trio with this post, but honestly, I feel like a lot of Kieran's journey and character arc can be summed up with his enduring willpower. Whether he's motivated through passion, spite and envy, or through his desire to correct his wrongdoings, Kieran really grows into his own because of how much he prioritizes his fire and determination.
Mythical:
Bit of an indescribable take for me but I'm oddly drawn to Marshadow for the mythicals - especially for Teal Mask Kieran. I think it just really symbolizes more of his timid dispositions and more gentle personality underneath everything his edgieness LOL, I guess? And there's something that speaks to me in terms of having him honor that side of him and learn to embrace it - especially alongside the other picks I listed.
This was fun!! I hope these answers were entertaining. :)

SUMMER ANIME 2024 FINAL THOUGHTS (PART 1)
So just like last season, I'm gonna put here a post with my final thoughts of every anime I saw this season and just like last season, I'm gonna start with the ones I dropped so yeah, let's begin!
Mayonaka Punch: Don't get me wrong, it was good but I was getting busier and when I noticed I was like 4 episodes behind lol, what I saw was good so I'll come back in the future surely. Also just wanted to say that this anime had my favorite ending of the entire season lol, it's just so cute and the spoken word like song is one that I really enjoyed
Suicide Squad Isekai: Okay, maybe I shoul've given this the 3 episode rule but counterpoint, I wasn't even liking the first episode at all lol
I just found it boring while watching it and why force myself into watching something I'm not enjoying? so yeah I dropped it lol. Two good things from the series tho: One, Harley Quinn's design looks super cute and two, the ending was such a banger it's crazy. Other than that yeah I didn't like it so it was dropped
Okay, now we can truly begin:
MY DEER FRIEND NOKOTAN
Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan
Okay, was this a disappointment? I don't think so, was it the greatest anime of the season? not at all lol.
Honestly I saw someone say a few days ago that ''the show peaked at episode 1'' and it is kinda true, episode 1 came in really hard and made everyone thought this was gonna be the next Nichijou or Pop Team Epic... And in the following episodes it became more and more clear this was gonna be a SoL anime with the absurd humor being somewhat relevant at times.
In my opinion once you get out of your head that the show is gonna be absurd humor with tons of changes and just see it as a Slice of Life with random elements the anime becomes much better, and even then from episode 5 onwards it found a good balance of chill and absurd which I liked in the end. The OP was a banger, the ED was fun, and each episode had at least one joke that made me chuckle so yeah, while not as good as it was hyped up at the beginning it still was quite fun in the end.
VTUBER LEGEND
I started watching this 'cause the premise looked kinda fun and after watching it, I think this might be my 2nd favorite anime this season.
I loved this so much, this may be because I was getting more in the vtuber rabbit whole while watching it (two separate things btw, just a coincidence) but this was really, really good. The humor on one hand was most of the times really spot on for me, it really brings that sort of unhinged behavior you can get through Hololive clips, and going outside of it the characters were really lovable too. Really liked everyone in the agency one way or another (even the one who always said that she's a baby lol) they all had good chemistry with Awayuki and even if there were a few that barely appeared in general (the catgirl one rarely appeared and Hikari while being the first properly introduced besides our MC, appeared very briefly throughout the anime) all of them were very likeable in the end.
I also appreciate a lot how this anime did something similar to Chainsaw Man and had a different ending on each episode, it's nice to see and imo it shows that love was poured into the adaptation, the way this wasn't explicitly a gl anime is something that most wouldn't appreciate but imo it's perfect this way, not everything has to revolve between romance to be good and the friends that Awayuki made throughout the series clearly shows it (altho I personally would like the Mashiron x Awayuki ship lol) in the end showing very little to no romantic intentions worked wonderfully here.
Nothing else to say, this was super good and loved it all the way.
SHY 2ND SEASON
more of a 2nd cour but eh, still works good imo lol
Honestly I'm not a big fan of the superhero stuff, but ever since seeing Shy last year I knew this would be something I would adore, the first season was amazing and definitely an underrated gem and this one? this one was just a good
What a banger of a season 2/cour 2, the characters were still on point, the new ones on Ai/Mai/Tokimaru/Century and the new Amalareiks were real good to see and this arc was just super good. I always expect Shy to be just like this season was, starts off slow and steady and it sneakily goes up until it becomes a real gem altogether. Hopefully this gets renewed for a new season 'cause this was really good to follow, for now I'll more than likely go follow the manga from here on out. This was really good.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I really like how there were different EDs here too, not like one each episode but there were a few here and there, which was really cool to see outside of the art that is always resent at the EDs since season 1, nice detail there
Just like last season, the next batch will probably be out next week lol.

WOL outfits throughout my run of the game
I've been working on this character based on Zooey from granblue fantasy, and all of her outfits so far have been based on her ^o^ or well, at least the main ones anyway (also big shout outs to @dewpriism for the help in making most of them)
Tags:
Gui plays ffxiv (every post regarding the game, including opinions and reactions and anything in between)
Daughter of Dravania (WoL specific tag, including glamor, gpose pics and lore posts)
WoLtfits (glamor posts, once again with most glamour being inspired by zooey gbf)
Original outfit (slight recreation because I can't remember which gloves or skirt I was using at the time, the skirt used to fit a lot better with the top but I've since been unable to find it on my glamour dresser)
This one was the very first one I made, when I was still playing paladin in ARR, and for how limited my knowledge of the game was (and for how ugly a lot of the pieces in ARR are), I'm still proud and found of this one, even tho it's been since retired and it's not quite as good as the later ones
Dark knight outfit
This one was after I started getting more used to the game (and realized that gatherer/crafter items could be used by any class in the game), it's a bit darker than I wanted it to be, but it still looks cute imo (and fits a dark knight :V), the only part I didn't really like were the leg guard things, but I liked the shoes too much to put on greaves or boots, and sadly this game is extremely limited when it comes to skirts 😭
this also has the distinction of being the set I used the most of since I played through HW with it and used through the vast majority of my stay in free trial, only switching to the next one when I decided to play bard
Bard/gunbreaker outfit
Now THIS is the one that I feel like has been the most quintessential outfit so far ✨ it's the closest one I've had to Zooey's actual outfit (with the only downside being the fact it has sleeves), my friend did an amazing with the boots especially, since despite the fact they're made out of leather, the colors still makes it look like they're greaves without looking super clunky and heavy like in my first outfit
It's both by far the best one I've had thus far and extremely faithful to what Zooey outfits I had in mind when I started playing, while still having its own personality
Red mage outfit
This one is by far the most out of the rails one so far lol red mage doesn't really fit Zooey's aesthetic, but it's an aesthetic I, as the player, really liked, so I asked my friend to see if they could at least make a color scheme that would fit Zooey, and they knocked it out of the park once again, and once again doing a banger job of making leather boots look metalic~
While this originally was just the pvp version of the level 70 red mage set, I ended up adding the skirt once I realized how well it went with the rest of the set.
And that's it for now ^o^ overall I'm proud of these, and really happy with the results, despite none of them being 1-1 to Zooey's outfit, I still really like them, and the small differences that detract from the likeness to gbf Zooey ends up giving the outfits a bit more personality while still being reasonably close to what I perceive as her aesthetic. This is far from finished as each new expansion opens up more possibilities and chances to try out other outfits based on the new pieces I come across

21 Canon that is overhyped
This is going to be a ‘touch your own nose’ situation, but unironically: the romance plots. Again: Absolutely a thing I spent a lot of time on especially wrt. Fanfic thoughts, and obviously who’s hitting on who is fun ep-to-ep gossip, but I feel like the attention the romances specifically get in comparison to the amount of canon they actually make up is, like, *wild*. I will once more blame genre and genre expectation and genre familiarity or lack there-off because like. These are action-adventure shows, not romantasy or YA (also why is YA now synonymous with teenage romance, I hate it here).
Like, canon Orym/Dorian is fun, but a) I’d like it in fandom/fanfic a lot more if it was actually the trope it is in the show instead of … *points at all that* and more importantly b) it is absolutely not everything that’s going on with those guys. The romance is a tertiary plot sharing screen time with all those other tertiary plots and standing half a step behind, I’d say, these two’s individual (also tertiary, because that’s just how it goes this campaign) arcs.
While I do think the romance plots have gotten qualitatively better from c1 in c2 and c3, fandom seems to think there’s quantitatively a lot more of them and that they are, overall, more important, and I just don’t see that. And in some cases (like with Orym, but there’s other stuff playing into that) the Romance-focus and overhyping of the few-and-far-between romance scenes over everything else warps their characters in fandom in a way that I just find unpleasant or uninteresting. Orym, for example, is just a lot more interesting to me if he’s the type of guy he imo is (standing next to the other Quiet Salt of the Earth Apocalyptic Action Guys) than when he’s warped into a Cute Tumblr Slash Man who only exists when he’s having an interaction with or emotion about either Will or Dorian.
I do think this is separate from an (imo) ‘shipping ruins analysis’ or whatever take (which are dumb, sorry not sorry), because my point here isn’t really that I have a problem with shipping, I have a problem with how people distort the canon to be all about canon romance that just often is not that fucking important. To be quiet clear: I think CR would be banger if none of the characters ever canonically banged, and I’d still be shipping in that case. I’m confused what other people are watching, because last time I checked the romance scenes are always like. 5-10 minutes in-between long fights and platonic shenanigans and intrigue plots and someone defacing a temple. Instead of the main event. You know.

Well, I was not here for the apparently garbage shipping discourse of C2, and quite frankly I am bored of the gods-drama but at least that’s, like, canon, in-universe drama. So after that long post about how people are to obsessed with the romances, I will immediately touch my own nose about it some more and say: Most rancid discourse happens when people randomly decide to defend a character’s lesbian gold star, especially if the character in question is, like, actively trying to fuck dudes in canon. Extra rancid whenever those people have to square their ostensible trans-inclusiveness with their blatant terfness the second they are reminded multigender people exist. To the people doing this stuff: I’m really so sorry for you that Laudna keeps hitting on the Nightmare King and trans people exist in Exandria, have you tried not exuding incredible amounts of ‘I am banned or discouraged from all my local irl queer community events’-Energy in the main tag?

i’ve been sitting on this shit for like two weeks since starting rottmnt and watching the movie before realizing there was a whole other season i accidentally skipped so it’s time to combine the hyperfixations
this is probably gonna have to be at least a couple more posts cause i a.) haven’t finished rottmnt (so hush hush please and thank) and b.) i haven’t reached a solid conclusion for all the characters. these are just my opinions and i’m just another loser on the internet but you’re getting my opinion anyway
on that note...
what TMA entity i think each member of the rottmnt cast would serve/vibe with!
(spoilers for ROTTMNT and TMA obv)
just for those unaware, there are 15 TMA fear entities. they are the embodiment of the fears of humanity and were created as humanity learned to fear shit, as one does. they aren’t really physical things, more ideas that influence the “real” world.
starting off with a banger
ms. o’neil!
ngl, april was one i really wanted to hit hard but wasn’t sure where to start. while i do love her as a character, she isn’t quite my favorite, so initially i didn’t give her much thought. entities like the dark, corruption, flesh, buried, vast, end, desolation, extinction, web, lonely, spiral, and stranger were out the door pretty much immediately; none of them really fit her character (corruption maybe just a tiny bit cause of her interactions with mutants but like. that’s pretty much it).
personally, i was leaning towards an eye-marked/avatar april with a hint of slaughter and a dash of the hunt. april is someone who very obviously LOVES learning given how often her schooling/assignments come up in the show and how often she geeks out over science stuff with donnie. the hunt mostly comes from her determination to get to the bottom of things regardless of the outcome. i threw the slaughter in there too bc i feel like april really wants to get into a fight with someone(s) at all times.
raph!

raph is one i didn’t want to go the obvious route for, but he kinda speaks for himself imo. he is very family-driven and cares deeply about his brothers; he serves as the leader (until leo takes his place anyway) and the powerhouse of the team and is very set on using his size and strength to protect his family.
raph is a corruption avatar with a pretty sizable helping of slaughter (most of if not all of the mutants are gonna be corruption avatars or corruption aligned but it probably won’t be the only thing for all of them). savage raph was honestly a big influence on the slaughter, but i also headcanon that baby raph had issues with his temper and had to learn to reign himself in cause he was built bigger and tougher than his brothers. he doesn’t let himself rage out often, but it’s fucking terrifying when he does.
mikey!

gotta love mikey!! he is so web aligned. i wasn’t sure about him for a while but then it hit me like a freight train. web. web 1000%. MAYBE a lil spiral if you wanna get a bit spicy. oh and he’s eye-touched.
in all seriousness, i fucking adore mikey (he’s not my fave either but still). his creativity and positive energy bring a whole kind of lively to the team and his family. he’s fun and upbeat and holy shit who was gonna tell me he’s 13 in the show. on top of all that, mikey is defo smarter than he seems, which fuels my web opinion. he has DEFINITELY used his youngest sibling status and his adorable face to manipulate anyone and everyone he has ever met to get what he wants. maybe not intentionally, but he’s done it. the spiral is honestly the closest thing i could think of that could relate to his ties to his mystic power. his eye ties come from the fact that he probably hears everything and everyone cause they assume he either doesn’t understand or he doesn’t really care. he does. he can and will use anything you say in a court of law. be scared.
splints!
splinter was an interesting one to think about. i wanted to take his history into account while also keeping in mind the kind of person he is in the show and how he interacts with the people around him.
splinter is also a very family-oriented man after he picks up the tots, but i feel like he goes through major personality changes after his time in the battle nexus and his transformation. we can see hints of lou jitsu in splints every now and then, but it is painfully obvious that lou jitsu is gone and he’s not coming back. with that being said, i wanted to split splinter into two different avatars: lou jitsu and splinter (mostly cause i’m interested in exploring both of them).
lou jitsu is a slaughter avatar that is eye marked with sprinkled in lonely (cause what actor as popular as he was has many real connections. esp when he’s trapped with big mama). i feel like despite being blinded by stardom, lou jitsu was still a very smart tactician who could handle himself very well in a fight (hc that leo gets his quick battle analyses from splints/lou).
splinter is a lonely avatar with a healthy helping of corruption. splinter is less lonely in that he doesn’t have people around him and more that the toll that having his life falling apart in the span of like 10 minutes and being harshly cut off from everyone and everything he’s ever known is SO apparent. that kind of extreme isolation leaves its scars. i think that despite having his family around him, splinter still misses the people he used to know, even if he wasn’t as close with them as he thought. he misses the normalcy sometimes, even if he would never go back and lose his sons.

the decemberists- indie folk/rock; VERY lyrical, lots of story songs. 'Picaresque' is a great starting album
shawn james- indie folk/blues rock; got me into hozier! he has a very blusey voice like hozier but its a lot louder lol, got a lot of bible references and greek mythology. 'Shadows' is a great folk album and 'Through The Valley' is a classic!
joanna newsom- indie folk; SHE PLAYS THE HARP!!!! i really love her music because shes a real storyteller and uses the harp in a lot of her songs. her songs can be quite long though, and you might find her voice a bit grating. 'Bridges and Balloons' is a really nice song about childhood stories! I'd recommend her whole album 'The Milk-Eyed Mender' (the songs aren't too long on it lol). shes not on spotify tho :(
beirut- folk pop?; they use a lot of traditional eastern european sounds which i love. 'Nantes' is a banger
sufjan stevens- indie folk; hes best known for making the soundtrack to call me by your name if youre familiar with that! 'Seven Swans' is a really good soft folk album, i think 'Abraham' is a really nice song with some biblical imagery
st vincent- indie pop; im specifically recommending her early work here, her first two albums have some really soft moments and can feel quite cinematic imo. 'All My Stars Aligned' rlly takes me places lol. id also strongly recommend this video which has her and andrew bird doing an acoustic concert in a house, its like a comfort video for me tbh
neko case- indie rock?; shes someone ive only been getting into recently but i feel like she kinda fits. she reminds me of mitski a bit. her song 'Star Witness' rlly hits and is a bit of a folky-dreamy vibe

Everyone Shut Up I Just Need To Lose My Mind Over That FAKE TYPE. x Ado Collab Track For A Minute
i have a longer post about FAKE TYPE. i'd like to write, because 2022 is truly the year of the FAKE TYPE. fan, but i don't have time for that because right now i only want to yell about "utakata lullaby"
for the uninitiated, FAKE TYPE. is an electroswing hip hop duo that turns out some of the most delightfully unhinged music i've had the pleasure of stumbling upon. it's composed of rapper TOPHAMHAT-KYO and musician DYES IWASAKI, who also release music as solo artists (though you'll often see DYES credited on THHK tracks). Ado is best known for her breakout single "ussee wa", because it kicks ass, and right now we are living in Ado Single Summer thanks to the upcoming one piece film, in which she provides the singing voice for the featured character on an entire album's worth of collab tracks. i do not go to one piece, but i DO go to FAKE TYPE. so imagine my delight when i saw that one of the collab artists would be FAKE TYPE., who've also been skyrocketing in popularity over the last couple of years thanks to increasingly higher profile work like hololive collabs.
anyway. let's talk about "utakata lullaby"
the opening is a classy little warmup into the full-swing energy of the rest of the track, and Ado is flexing her vocal prowess right from the start. it isn't until the chorus kicks in that we are fully in FAKE TYPE. territory, though: the melodic drops away almost completely, and we get the classic shrill bounce of a THHK rap going at full manic tilt. it is a TREAT.
THHK is a wildly talented rapper, and he can do some truly whack shit with his voice. the combination of his dissonant vocal harmonies, the constantly shifting rhythms and the way he effortlessly moves from spitting rapid rhymes to shrieking and laughing them make for a pretty distinct style. i love it
FAKE TYPE. do their fair share of fun collabs (i could write an entire post about how much i love "Bloody Mary", their first collab with KANKAN), but here's the thing: THHK doesn't write lyrics for other artists quite the same way he does for himself. that's a given on an obvious level, but they're always a little toned down, the rhythms a little more predictable, and usually a little less of a mouthful than THHK's hyper-dense verses. but Ado is capable of doing the same whack shit with her voice that THHK is, and judging by "utakata lullaby", he absolutely went to town writing those lyrics. that little giggle in the second verse when Ado hits the high note is a THHK flourish that wouldn't sound out of place in, say, "Princess♂". imo FAKE TYPE. should do another collab with Ado because i would pay cash dollars to hear her spit more THHK rhymes
the music is also a dynamic treat because DYES IWASAKI only churns out bangers. i don't have as many coherent thoughts about the music other than: It's Really Good. the shift between bouncy electro swing and dissonant electronica is classic DYES. the contrast between the piano intro and the rest of the song's escalation up to the chorus is simply delicious. mwah
in summary: "utakata lullaby" rules and you should go listen to some FAKE TYPE.

first off, HUGE props for going over Every Single Character, gotta admire the dedication there. for the euro team though, i've gotta hard disagree. maybe it's just me but the armor for the most part... doesn't look great on them, particularly for giancarlo and olivier. speaking of which johnny and ESPECIALLY olivier's outfits go hard imo.
lastly, this is making me think about something again- looking at metal fight so far and from what i've seen of burst, for sure bsb's character designs are... quite plain in comparison. it's kind of a similar thing to what pokemon has going on where if you look at gens 1-3 vs gens 5+, the character designs get a LOT more interesting in the latter. the weird thing is that despite this, the g-rev designs for a lot of characters are arguably more boring than their s1 counterparts, michael being probably the peak example of this. some of the characters introduced in that season had some banger looks though (see: f-sangrez)
I based the ratings on all of Beyblade, so while some of the outfits are great compared to the rest of the season, they're still competing with mfb and Burst, where the design philosophy for characters (specifically Burst) is to make them as extreme as possible (one of the Burst mc's has a 9-point mohawk). As for the armor, I have a very strong personal bias towards any sort of armor on characters
I have the V-Force and G-Rev posts almost done, since when a character was in multiple seasons I'd rate them all their fits at once. The BBA team improved in G-Rev (most notably Max and Kenny), Michael got a downgrade, Emily and Eddy I think improved (I really like the PPB jackets so I am biased). The White Tigers all improved (except Mao), and Borg also got minor improvements
G-Rev's new characters do have great designs (F-Sangre most definitely), and I noticed that V-Force had a lot of characters wearing uniforms, which does make a lot of them seem uninspired (a select few do stand out however)
I haven't started the mfb list yet, but I have a feeling the ratings will be overall higher, and Burst will likely be full of 7/10 and above

Hypothetically Rewriting Assault’s Story + Some General Assault Opinions
There’s a game my husband and I like to play when we watch a movie, play a game, or read a book that has a story that we don’t really enjoy or we enjoy certain parts of but not others. We look at things we’d keep and things we’d change and we build a story from there-- sort of like an AU but we don’t really go into the writing part, we just stick to theorizing and mapping a general story.
I decided to play that game with Star Fox. Not because I think Star Fox has a bad story but because sometimes I think the stories could have been handled better. Note: for the rewrite game, I only really look at story, even for video games, I don’t really look at gameplay mechanics, but I do understand those have a lot to do with story potential so I do take it in as a factor... I just don’t bother to “rewrite” the mechanics, if that makes any sense at all. Some of my list today will include boss encounters but I wouldn’t necessarily say those are mechanic-related... more like “event-related”.
I’ve mused a bit in the past about rewriting Adventures and Command and I do have plans to do a mock up of an Adventures remake eventually. However, today I was thinking about how I would go about handling an Assault re-write in particular. Much like Command and Adventures, I don’t have any beef with the core story but I do think there’s a few things that could’ve been better about Assault’s storyline-- like they had good ideas rolling but they didn’t quite refine them.
Under the cut because SUPER long.
My basic feelings on Assault are pretty positive. I think the game is generally just fun and I like that it feels like the natural progression from SF64. I liked getting to see planets we haven’t seen since the N64 era in better graphics and I liked seeing Star Wolf return. I also just thought the aparoids were neat enemies.
Generally speaking, though, when it comes to Assault, I think it suffers from the thing it tries to push the most-- the story. I think a lot of people get caught up in thinking the story is better than it is because it’s the first game since SF64 that really follows the same Star Fox vibe without retelling the Lylat Wars. Don’t get me wrong, the overall plot is great but the execution and pacing are... wonky. Certain characterizations also take a hit in some regards but no one really talks about that when Command exists. That’s something we’ll talk about later on with this post.
That being said, Assault really does have a lot good going for it. An absolute banger of a soundtrack, some great dialogue, a neat story synopsis, the introduction of cool characters like Panther and Beltino (who existed but was always off-screen), and just good levels.
So, here’s what I would add, I suppose, if I were to somehow have the ability to rewrite Assault. Originally I had this in paragraph form, but I’ve made it into more of a list under topic segments with main points bolded for your viewing pleasure. Some of these points might be considered nitpicky and while I do understand that yes, this is a game about space animals, I do hold the developers in high enough regard to make a game with a continuity that makes sense.
The Story Changes
- Reduce Pigma’s storyline in Assault. This is the biggest one for me because a bulk of the plotline feels like a giant chase to just get at Pigma and it feels like it derails from the actual plot with the aparoids. We only go to Sargasso because of Pigma. We only go to Fichina and then back to Meteo again, because of Pigma. That’s 3 levels in a 10 level game devoted to just tracking down Pigma and chasing him. While it makes the build up to fighting Pigma kind of nice, I personally feel like the plot could be reduced to 2 levels. If Assault overall was a longer game, I could see them making it 3 levels. Overall, though, in its current state, I feel like the side plot overstays its welcome and the aparoids promptly get shoved to the side in favor of “Oh no, we gotta get to Pigma!” And I get the main motive here is to show how the aparoids affect people and because of the build up, it does a good job at showing how utterly terrifying the aparoids are. But it’s still too long given the length of Assault’s story. The only alternative to this is make Assault longer, which... honestly, it should be.
- Revise the scene with Tricky. I’m obviously not well-versed in dinosaur biology but I’m pretty sure dinos didn’t grow that fast from what studying I HAVE done. And why is he suddenly king now? Did his parents die? He seems not affected by this at all? Like it’s a funny scene with him, Fox, and Krystal, but it’s odd if you really look at it. Give us, as players, more context because I’m still not even sure what happened to make Tricky suddenly the leader and... big. As a note, you’re gonna hear me gripe a lot about the Sauria level in this post.
- The Star Wolf + Peppy sacrifice is a low effort way to raise tension/stakes and then cop out. Oldest trick in the book, imo, is to act like you’re going to kill off important characters only for them to be alive miraculously. And let’s face it, as an audience we all know they aren’t going to kill those characters because it’s Nintendo and those characters are too beloved. I would’ve forgiven them for only doing this with Peppy or Star Wolf, but when you tack them both together and throw in the fact they make it seem like you’re going to have to kill General Pepper too... yeah, it’s just a bit much of the same trope over and over again. I wanted to put a note in here about how I’m fine with the Great Fox being “sacrificed” but overall, it needed to return to the series because of it’s icon status, but I think that’s more of a gripe at Command instead of Assault.
- Keep Pigma alive. This will conflict with a point I have later on about the game consistently having characters cheat death for easy drama points but with Pigma, I would’ve kept him fully alive... but maybe with some physical damage from the aparoids. I understand he’s semi-alive in Command and tbh I don’t know where I stand on that. Why keep Pigma alive, you might ask? I feel like his character has a lot more potential than being “just the greedy guy”. Like he’s got good potential future villain material for future games and... if I’m honest? I just don’t see Nintendo wanting to keep Pigma dead so why even bother killing him off? They couldn’t even commit to him being dead in Command anyways so it seems very moot.
- Bring Bill and Katt back. Assault is acts a bit like a big reunion of all of our SF64 favorites but our two favorite side characters are suspiciously missing. Wouldn’t Bill be out on the front lines fighting against Andrew in the beginning? Or maybe back in Katina? And wouldn’t Katt inevitably show up in the midst of the invasion, maybe to pointedly check in on Falco?
- Bring Andrew back for the final fight. I think Andrew being defeated early into the game is fine overall but I think bringing him back in for a reunion final fight against the aparoids would serve to really solidify that it’s really everyone vs the invading aparoid force. It would show that not only is Star Wolf willing to put aside their differences but so is basically everyone in the Lylat System in the name of survival. Imagine the Venomians and Cornerians working together against an aparoid fleet, giving Star Fox and Star Wolf time to attack the queen? I just think it’d be neat and it’d open up the potential for some fun banter mid-mission. I do understand that quite a few people consider Andrew canonically dead after Assault but personally, I feel that his defeat left his fate questionable (I’m a staunch believer that unless there’s a body, they’re probably alive, especially for Nintendo games because, again, they never like to kill people off) so him returning in Command never really bothered me.
- In general, reconsider some of the character portrayals. Unfortunately, when a series has a different studio for each game, character portrayals will inevitably have inconsistencies. While I give Namco a lot of credit for putting in oodles and oodles of detail into the game (particularly the levels), I think they failed in their portrayal of Fox, at the least, and Wolf is a considerable offender as well. While it’s obvious that Fox in Adventures was effectively modeled off of Sabre even in terms of personality, Rareware was at least able to justify Fox’s newfound jaded attitude with the passing of many years and a distinct lack of steady income, resulting in the team being in disarray. Assault’s Fox is a stark contrast to his cynical interpretation with seemingly no explanation other than maybe “Oh, I have more money and a gf, maybe I should behave myself”. As if the sudden change in personality wasn’t random, Fox also just seems very blah, like a blank slate stereotypical shooter game protagonist dude with little to no emotion. Wolf is less obvious but gets slated into a mentor-like role midway through the game and ends up in a respectful rivalry with Fox... which there’s nothing inherently wrong with that except for it happening abruptly (and, I mean, Peppy is right there). But I take less issue with this and more of an issue with the fact that there’s an entire level establishing that Wolf now runs a crime den with effectively what seems to be an army and no one bats an eye at this. He doesn’t even call on them to help with the aparoids. Did they all die when the aparoids attacked Meteo? Are they safe somewhere else? Where do they go? How was Sargasso able to operate without the CDF being on their doorstep with warrants for arrests?
- Don’t kill all the dinosaurs. A bit of a dramatic statement but the ending screen that showed all the damage to Sauria really bothered me. While I understand that the dinosaurs had less of a chance against the aparoids than a more technology-focused society like Corneria, I was a bit disappointed that the decision was made to just state that a lot of tribes had been wiped out. I know this could easily be retconned in a future game and I feel like it should be. “But why, Amalia? Why are you disappointed by that?” 1) It’s a little too grimdark for my tastes. 2) The fact it all happened off-screen felt very hand-wavy. And 3) It brings into question the entire point of Adventures. Why did we bother to save this planet if it was going to be reduced to rubble and ash 1 year later? Where were the Krazoa in all of this? Why did they not make an appearance at all to try to stop the invasion with their alleged powers? It just raises too many weird questions and I feel like Namco didn’t think it through too much. Which I mean, sure. Family, kiddo game. I’m not asking for bigbrain plot and lore but I’m squinting at this bit because it does feel very contrary to the lore from the previous game.
- Make the aparoids more relevant. As nice as it is to have a random bad guy from another galaxy, I feel like there was more that could be done with the aparoids in terms of their origins. Tiny things, mind you, not huge revelations. Off the top of my head, they could have been tied into Krystal’s backstory to help alleviate some of the complaints that she was too random to be added to the series’ main cast. Alternatively, they could have been a product of Andross or even a weapon prototype from Corneria that fled the lab (I actually thought the game was leaning in that direction for a bit then just Nothing Happened). I get that the vagueness of their origins leaves room for people to speculate and speculation is nice but... when you leave too many things unknown, it starts to feel less like giving fans room to interpret and more like just doing random things for the sake of it. I think a lore tidbit here or there would work wonders for the aparoids instead of leaving them as just borg/zerg clones.
Level-Based Changes
- Add either Aparoid RedEye or Aparoid General Scales as a boss to Sauria. Given that this level mysteriously lacks a boss, which is just weird compared to the other levels, I think that they had the opportunity to add something cool to go along with the cinematic feel they were going for with Assault. Assault’s cutscenes do play in a movie-like fashion and it’s clear they’re trying to make the game as epic as possible. It’s a shame they had so much fodder for a great boss here but they failed to go through with it. Alternatively: Add a Krazoa-Aparoid fusion. Why? Because Star Fox is about cool epic sci-fi and that would be cool epic sci-fi incarnate.
- Add a boss to the Aparoid Homeworld Level, aka the penultimate level. Another one I felt was personally weird that there was no “final defense system” to challenge the team. Would be cool to do an aerial battle over the aparoid planet with some giant flying aparoid.
- Be kinder to Sauria. The level had some good homages but overall was incredibly small and incredibly short. It felt like a bone tossed to Adventures fans but was not entirely true to the setting built by Rareware. I’m... not even sure where the Sauria level is supposed to take place? I presume it’s Walled City but it doesn’t really have the same color scheme or aesthetic? Also where is my revised Adventures music? Why do all the other levels get it but Sauria doesn’t?
- Put some of those funky items from the multiplayer into the main campaign. I don’t know why some of these things, items especially, were omitted unless it was purely due to time constraints. I remember having missile launchers and jetpacks in the multiplayer and was a bit sad that they were not in the main campaign. Retuning the levels and adding those in would be a nice breath of fresh air for the more tedious on-foot missions.
- More levels. Self-explanatory. Still sad we didn’t get the Zoness or Titania levels in the single-player mode.
I think all of the above changes would improve the game, though I recognize all of this is being said 16 years later after lots of time to contemplate Assault’s weaker points. I’m not entirely certain how long Star Fox Assault took to develop but given that there’s obviously quite a bit scrapped from the game (an entire arcade mode was scrapped as well), I’m going to assume that the studio felt pressured to shove the game out the door and into the hands of customers. It’s a shame, really, because I think a little bit longer in the oven would have done a lot of good. Still, the product we got was good in its own right and a game that many people look back on fondly. I haven’t gotten to replay it in years but I hope to quite soon.
You might wonder why I bothered typing this all out and I guess my point was this-- Assault was great but it wasn’t perfect, and while a lot of other games fall under a crushing amount of scrutiny, Assault seems to dodge it. And don’t get me wrong-- I adore Assault. But given that not many takes exist out there about rewriting it, I decided to give it a shot. For variety’s sake.
I do want to a mock up of a revised Assault story, which I think I will get to work on after completing this while all my ideas are still fresh in mind. So stay tuned for that sometime in the near future. I will also be doing my Adventures mock up at some point but probably not for a little bit as I do wanna focus some of my free time on actual fic-writing.

the song of achilles - madeline miller (historical fiction)
retelling of the myth of achilles, from patroclus' (his normal dudebro absolutely no romance there - some historians) perspective. some banger lines balanced out by godawful ones (once you start counting how many times feet are mentioned you never really stop + skin is once described as 'the color of freshly pressed olives' which is just green). the story is, yknow, beautiful and aching. i did really enjoy it, worth the read!

diaries of a junior doctor (who no longer practices medicine), with funny as well as heartbreaking anecdotes on life as a doctor. fucking hilarious at times, then you turn the page and you read the saddest thing. i absolutely devoured this book, its a really cool insight into the medical world! 10/10 have already decided m gonna reread
a short history of nearly everything - bill bryson (non-fiction)
what the title says! its basically an 'introduction' to all of science (air quotes bc its like 500 pages) written in a way that makes it both easy and fun to read as someone who studies literature and hasnt had a science course in 4 years. imo best read along with a pencil so you can underline and comment etc. wonderful book, learned a lot and had a great time
opposite of always - justin a. reynolds (romance, YA, coming of age idk)
high school senior gets together with the girl of his dreams. and then she dies. but no fear! its groundhog day week months and he wakes up right when he met her again. can he save her? while this book is sweet and well written and lovely message and all that.... it made me realise 'ah. im officially too old to relate to high schoolers'. so there's that.
haven't they grown - sophie hannah (mystery)
the protagonist parks in front of the house of her old childhood best friend who she hasnt seen in 12 years. just having a looksee. oh there she is, getting out of the car with her kids! hold the fuck up. those kids look exactly the same age as 12 years ago... a book with layers upon layers of lies and mystery, i recommend saving it for a time that you have the entire day to read, you just wanna know So bad. the protagonist's daughter (and her husband to some degree) help her to figure it out and it's neat :)
wendy, darling - a.c. wise (fantasy)
what if peter pan and neverland wasnt really the dream it seemed? what if wendy got institutionalised for still believing in it? what if, years later, she has a daughter. and what if, one night, peter pan comes for her daughter. a really cool reimagining, really goes hard on the 'peter is a kid forever and ever and has insane powers to shape neverland so maybe thats not a good idea!' i really loved it, its a great book about growing up even though you dont want to etc. also incredibly expressive writing, i could picture perfectly what was being described. quite eerie a lot of the time but im a fan of that
the dreamers - karen thompson walker (sci-fi?)
there's a girl at a college that won't wake up anymore. she's just peacefully sleeping but nothing can rouse her. after a few days, she passes away. weird but alright! ah shit it was contagious and now the whole town is falling asleep. they all seem to be dreaming so vividly though, what could it be about? odd writing style, but in a good way. something else yknow. really eerie vibes, but unmatched by the way your skin crawls when you check the date it was published and it was before the pandemic. uncomfortable similarities! its about the way a community might come together (or not) in crisis times and also about the differences between waking and dreams. fun!
the midnight library - matt haig (philosphical fiction)
it starts with nora taking an overdose. except she wakes up in the midnight library, a place between life and death. there she can try other routes her life could have taken if she'd done things differently. a really nice book about depression and finding the will to live again by looking at yourself with a new perspective. although i loved one of his other books (how to stop time) more, this was also a very good read

idk anything about the grace period for deltarune u can just keep this ask in the attic until that’s over.. anyway.. i really liked chap 2 i played it in one sitting 😭 the rpg combat is enjoyable enough and just the right amount more complex than the undertale combat is, although not very difficult. very touching power of friendship moments minus that fucking bird man. some of the dialogue felt quite fandom tropey and surface-level, and queen’s lines (love her tho) were hit or miss for me. i think the biggest frustration i have with it is all the useless random encounter characters clogging up your world 😞😞 there’s only so many wacky one-liners toby can give them and i am not invested enough to care! also some of those designs are uglie!! there are better ways to make a world feel real and lived in. same thing happened with undertale.
BUT it was a great time! i liked the juxtaposition between the ultimately harmless antics and charming banter with the gang and queen, and the more sinister plot going on in the background. most obviously in the ending. toriel and susie making a pie while kris RIPS OUT THEIR SOUL….spoiler warning.. did u see the theory that the soul aka red heart is you the player operating kris the vessel? i’m definitely not a theorist but i like seeing all the loose plot ends i’m having a good time. i love noelleeeeee 💞💞💞💞and i liked susie a lot more this chapter. when ralsei taught her a healing spell 😖😖 i still don’t really care about ralsei though 😓

i also played it in one sitting it was so GOOD. i don't care that it was 2 am here when it was released i wasss ecstatic and the game was so fucking GOOD tonby the fox delivered!! it was so so worth the wait! the music was so much better than in chapter 1 imo, like... my castle town? the cyber fields theme? the queen's fight? spamton g spamton??? rouxls' "fight"?? BANGERS. i only see bangers. the new gameplay mechanics were also very fun!! i for one kinda struggled with the mice puzzles but not nearly as much as that one section with the traffic jams where you have to go down and back up or whatever. what the hell was that? i'm surprised i actually got past it. i loved the parts in cyber field though where you had to move on beat with the music that was sooo fun!! more of that! i prefer the fighting system in undertale ngl but it's mostly bc the undertale bosses are... just so good. the one boss who rivalises for now to me is queen, although rouxls is also very fun.
as for the story itself... i liked it :) susie & noelle are fucking ADORABLE. i think they deserve to be happy forever like not even together just individually as characters they're the fucking best. susie's grown so much that's my girl... wough... ralsei i do like but... i don't trust him :D i don't think he's evil but he knows too much and tells us too little until he can't keep it for himself and i don't like that. like bro you're gonna get us in trouble stop. but ALSO some ppl speculate that himself is being misled and that the fountains wouldn't bring the roaring, which is an interesting theory. (also i miss lancer being more relevant)
uhh kris is... well... kris... :)... yeah i did hear about that theory i'm in a discord server where ppl have been going on and on about theories since the game dropped LMAOO we're all insane. um. my personal theory is that there's another knight, or that kris is at least also influenced by an "evil force" or whatever, and we're the good force influencing them bc otherwise they're just a normal albeit mischievous kid. and the stretch part is that uhhh there's two knight pieces on a chessboard, ik this isn't about chess at all but king of spades does tell you at the end of chapter 2 that you'll meet a more powerful foe = the queen, coincidentally in chess the queen is stronger than the king. hmmmmmmmmmmm. lmao i don't think my parallel here is right but it's fun to think about anyway
did you see the superboss? i didn't fight him myself but he's so fun. also @ everyone who said he's gonna be a tumblr sexyman i hate that you're right shut that shit down HJKSNFKJSDHG. also did you see the secret fucked up pipis route? it's horrible. genuinely... i watched a streamer play it and 😳 uh. well i didn't even hate berdly before anyway yeah he's annoying but like he's a snot-beaked kid i'm not gonna wish him... whatever happens in this route. legit scarring. and poor noelle... pffbbgtbg. hate this so much. but i think it was done so bad and horrible on purpose, with how specific your gameplay has to be for you to be able to complete it tonby really was like "you wanna be an asshole? undertale wasn't enough? fine. work for it. and also suffer" nskjshf. i'm never doing it <3
lastly FUCKING QUEEN!!!!!!! QUEEN MY LOVE!!!!! BEST CHARACTER. i love her sosososo much it's unreal. and i didn't mind any character designs much, i'm not too complicated in that regard shfkjsdfh i love the tasques and tasque manager though :) also the... idk their names... the butler dudes? they're so cute. swatch's design is neat
