gonna watch the merlin series 2 troll two parter for the first time in years. i always skip it because i remember it being gross, but that means i've been missing out on some hilarious merlin and arthur scenes.

Presenting to gringos (people that aren't from Brazil) Mundo Torajo (Torajo World)

Mundo Torajo is a brazillian animation youtube channel that will be very soon releasing a series thanks to a gofundme. Unfortunately, there is still no english translation, so I can do it here if you want.

Torajo was a channel like Jaiden (same video format) until about august/september of 2023, when a short was released (this one) beggining the lore, in which a red version of Torajo took his place. This continued on for almost 2 months with no sign of Torajo, only through glitches and links on the shorts that lead to audios of Torajo and Morajo (the red one) talking about the channel's future and video format. 2 months after Torajo was gone, Morajo made this video showing all the audios together. He said he made all of this to prove Torajo the audience didn't really care for him (their whole argument was about youtube algorythm vs passion and a nice audience) because they only stayed for the mystery. In the next video, this one, the two fight and we find out that they are brothers and Torajo called Morajo when the channel grew and he needed help, with everything getting more and more unstable between them. At the end, they set apart and Morajo starts his own channel. The two start a "war" between them until this video (followed by this one), when he introduces a new character, Zulmi (I love her, you'll see more about her later). She is friends with the two and stops their fight... at least, for a while.

Then, this happened. Basically, Morajo got infected with algorythomus, a substance that is, well, the youtube algorythm. He goes a little crazy and threatens Torajo while hacking other youtubers, and then Torajo posts this video. He explains he lives in another planet, Verade, that can be only kept alive when people watch their videos. The next video, this one, is the last part of this series/saga. The two have a fight with a really emotional flashback of them as kids, and in the end THE POWER OF LOVE WINS AND THEY MAKE UP YAAAAAAY

And, for a while, all is well. They continue Torajo's channel together (the 3 of them), introduce a new character, Linn (I love him, you'll see more about him later) and even post a compilation of the fight. And then something happens.

The channel is hacked by an unknown person and this video is posted. In it, we meet the "hacker", Abel, who is basically Verade's god/narrator and that does propaganda to the gofundme for the creation of an animated series (he also wipes Torajo's memory after this). 1 week later, they reach their goal and publish this video, with a sneak peak of the series (also wiping the character's memories). Now, there's just 2 videos left for its release, and the story is warming up. They post shorts daily and this week, Morajo seems very unwell, and as we know algorithomus is coming back, this is surely the cause of it.

This is the lore at the moment, and I can keep you aware of it. They are very popular with kids. I recommend, even if you don't know portuguese, to watch their videos, cuz they are really fun and charismatic. Now, I'll show you the characters!

Torajo

He is the main character. He is, as you can see, a green apple and is very nice, though a bit sassy and dumb. There are many memes about him, like him bald or as a banana. He has a crush on Zulmi but won't say it. Loves coffee and minecraft.

Morajo

Torajo's brother and former antagonist, now a co-protagonist. He is a red apple and kind of an emo, grumpy, kind of mean sometimes but actually very emotional, soft, shy and nerdy. People often call him a mango. He wears glasses but usually doesn't do it on videos. Loves Tetris and cats.

Zulmi

She is a co-protagonist. She is a blueberry and kind of a diva, but also very extroverted and likes gossips, also being nerdy about science stuff. Is often called a pineapple. Has a crush on Torajo, but won't say it. Loves Club Penguin.

Linn

He is a co-protagonist. He is a lemon and very introverted and shy, being very nerdy about anime and videogames, also kind, calm and phylosophic. Is besties with Morajo. Likes to play ukulele, ducks, Zelda and bread with lettuce.

Azedo (Sour)

He is Linn's little brother and a side character. He is a lemon and basically an ipad kid (looks like the collector from the owl house, is currently called Enzo Gabriel/Azedo Gabriel). He likes spider man, chicken nuggets and saying stuff on the community's discord server (I've seen him there sometimes).

He is Verade's god/narrator. He is a mango and kind of crazy, but really funny. He hasn't appeared much, so we don't know a lot about him, but we'll probably see more about him soon.

Amby

Ok, this one ain't canon but I am including him anyway. He is from an arg of the official Discord server and was a villain from an alternate universe that was friends with Morajo and then tried to dominate the channel. He is definitely a tumblr fave cuz he is completely crazy and unhinged, while also being a master manipulator and loving creating enygmas. He is a raspberry.

My Jikook Journey

Part 2 of my intro.

From "multi-shipper" to "...wait a goddamn minute."

This will be a messy and detail-lacking overview because I could easily do an individual post on each thing I mention here and delve deeper (AMA!).

When I became an ARMY in 2018, I was excited about the treasure trove of fanfics now available to me. The ship didn't really matter, but my bias was/is Jimin (bias wrecker Tae then) so the very first fic I read was a vmin camping one (there was only one sleeping bag, gasp!). For me, shipping meant I'd read fanfics or save fanart of certain pairs together because in a fictional sense/in another universe, they make a good couple. I think this is a healthy approach, keeping that boundary between reality and fiction.

When I mentioned to my k-pop fan step-sister that I was reading vmin, she gave me a weird look. She said taekook is THE ship of BTS, which confused me because vmin seemed to be closer and have better chemistry than Tae and JK. Turns out, she was right. Searching by most kudos on ao3, you get a shit ton of taekook. I accepted it readily and just thought I must be missing something since I was a baby ARMY, so I read those super popular fics and started to enjoy taekook too. I started to focus more on them because... it felt like that was what I was supposed to do.

It's a common problem, isn't it? Baby ARMY who are open to shipping are quickly found and "guided" to taekook before they have a chance to glance in another direction. If they try, taekookers, who are the majority in the shipping sphere, will convince them that taekook is THE ship. Even if they aren't ARMY (my step-sister), they know that much. As a new fan, you just want to fit in, so you'll go along with what's most popular. Some people eventually find their own way, but many don't. Asking questions is vital, but if you do it aloud, you risk getting attacked by a small but extremely aggressive portion of the most infamous fanbase.

Even back then while just innocently reading any well-written fic I could get my hands on, I noticed that Jungkook was usually portrayed as a lot edgier and darker than he really was (manifested the 2023 JK aesthetic) and Taehyung was constantly portrayed as... Jimin. Especially in fan art. For some reason, a lot of the time, the appearance/vibe/personality of Taehyung was truer to Jimin than to himself, and that confused me. "Why not just make it Jungkook x Jimin?" I kept seeing them trying to force Taehyung into the dynamic that Jimin has with Jungkook when their own dynamic was perfectly fine.

Slipping down the pipeline, I started to watch taekook moments/analysis videos because I thought gotta be missing something, right? That's how I found out people are convinced they're dating, and it wasn't just a fun fic/art thing. The videos themselves were... something. There were just way too many red circles, too much slow-mo, and too much mind-reading going on for me to take any of it seriously. Plus, the moments that weren't exaggerated were just close friend skinship. Hell, Taejin were doing more sus shit together than taekook.

And yet people insist on taekook even when taekook do nothing to insist on themselves.

At this point, it was deep into 2019. Jikook were wilding in 2019. Even I was noticing all the... little things that made me raise an eyebrow. The touches that lingered just too long in rather intimate areas, the fond/awed looks at each other, the shameless flirting, the complete lack of physical boundaries, and the normalness of it all between them. That's telling. Even though I was mainly a taekooker with a shit ton of fanart and fics saved to my phone, if you looked at my liked YouTube videos around that time, I had jikook moments videos saved, not taekook, because their moments were just more fun/juicier to watch overall. They just interacted differently than they did with other members.

A quick example would be a video compilation of taekook holding hands. Sure, they're holding hands, maybe even interlocking fingers, but they're usually standing side by side and looking in different directions or just having a neutral expression. But if you watch a jikook one, not only is it much longer, but it's just different. I feel like I'm interrupting sometimes. Even in such a simple action like holding hands, there's a softness, an intimacy there that doesn't exist in taekook. Jikook wouldn't just be holding hands (usually for absolutely no reason), they'd be looking into each other's eyes, smiling sweetly, fully turned toward each other, attention completely captured by the other. How can I explain the look in their eyes? It just doesn't exist with vmin, yoonmin, jihope, etc.

Sidebar: All of those pairs have flirty/sus moments as most really close friendship dynamics do, but they're lighthearted to me and never invoked a true sense of.... whoa whoa whoa, hang on. If Jungkook and Jimin were my close friends IRL and I saw the way they are together, my alarms would go off. As either, "Oh my god, they're fucking," or "Oh my god, they wanna fuck each other." People always say, "Oh, Jimin's like that with everyone." No. No, he's not. Pay attention. Really pay attention to the differences in the dynamics between members. None of them have the "same" relationship. Especially pay attention to how the rest of the members react to Jikook.

Anyway,

So here I was noticing this... deeper intimacy in simple interactions with those two (because I'm a human being with eyes and life experience), and yet my Twitter timeline would just dismiss them entirely. "I love their friendship," "Wow their brotherhood is so beautiful," and "They're all so close," and normally these statements wouldn't bother me because technically they're true, but I started noticing that taekook or yoonmin would brush shoulders and everyone would be like, "Omg taekook/yoonmin married/boyfriends/real," over nothing. Their moments are cute/sweet/funny, but never more than that. The blatant hypocrisy did frustrate me a little, but ultimately I didn't overthink it; I didn't want to be delulu or look too deeply into anything because I still thought I must be missing something. Taekook is the most popular for a reason, right? Right?

But Taekook died for me when Tae told Taekookers to get out of their imagination. I respected that from him and took it at face value. It was the most aggressive shutdown of shipping we've ever had. I couldn't brush him off. It's disrespectful. He's uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, over the next couple of years, Jungkook and Jimin only got more suspicious in the minor interactions and in the big staple moments. Rosebowl. Hickeygate. Etc. Everyone was bending over backward trying to explain away the things these two did with each other, and it's always the same excuses. I was also trying extremely hard to think of any reason other than the simplest one because I didn't want to be delulu.

Because there was no way two members of a boyband were actually in a long-term relationship together. Especially in a conservative country.

Ridiculous. Unrealistic. Delulu.

I was basically telling myself in a mirror that they were just extra super duper close friends with muddy boundaries that meant sucking ears and giving neck hickeys was okay. I did allow there to be the thought that, maybe they're friends with benefits and that unavoidable intimacy now bleeds through into their regular interactions.

That opinion carried until 2023.

The year so many jikookers gave up and bemoaned that those two weren't close anymore or had broken up is the year that finally convinced me.

What tipped me over?

Jungkook's vlives.

The way he kept watching videos of Jimin when he could just phone him. It reminded me of me watching Jimin, but I'm just a fan; I watch those videos because it's the only way I can appease my yearning to be close to and connected to Jimin, and absorb everything that he does or says or is.

Jungkook doesn't have that limitation, so why's he sitting there like a lovesick puppy with the fondest/most loving eyes when he could have Jimin over with just a call? Why's he sitting there looking like he's also yearning for something he can't have like us, the fans, when he can have it? He has Jimin's number. You don't need to watch yourself tease Jimin. You can just go do it. Just text him, bro.

It felt like he just wanted to bask in Jimin without interruption, without distraction, without having to force his attention elsewhere. Beyond being incredibly sweet, it also felt like Jungkook was making a statement, a point, because he kept doing it. Why? Is he somehow obsessed with his friend and bandmate whom he's seen almost every day for over a decade? If it was to promote him, he really didn't have to do all that? He didn't do it for the others, not to that extent.

Watching Jimin, talking about Jimin, singing Jimin's songs, fkn playing Letter on guitar. (The naked vlive flirting session? Lord, what.)

The man kept having vlives with a significant Jimin focus. He insisted on it enough times that it felt like he was trying to slap some sense into me. His insistence bothered me enough for me to finally do a deep dive into jikook.

Down the rabbit hole, I went. The more I learned, the more my jaw dropped. Where the fuck was all this info on my timeline when these motherfuckers were celebrating the most basic kpop boy interactions as if they were wedding vows? I even ended up seeing pictures/info we as fans were never meant to see at the bottom of that hole. If you know, you know.

Eventually, I ended up on this video (bless this fucking channel).

I want everyone to understand that I had zero knowledge of established relationship timeline theories. I went into this video blind, just trying to find the point in time when JK started to warm up to Jimin. That's not what I found. I found something so much better.

Especially 2013-2015 had me in awe. I think I cried. Jimin and Jungkook had a fattest, cutest mutual crush on each other. Absolutely. And because they were young, not that famous, and still rookies with media and camera training, we get a lot of insight into those two that we wouldn't get in later years when they learned how to mask and behave more "idol"-like. Jimin was especially loud, almost sadly loud. If you haven't watched the timeline of at least those early years, I implore you to. It actually blew my mind and broke/healed my heart. It's really bittersweet to see two teenage boys with little to no experience in anything romantic trying to come to terms with themselves while also coming to terms with each other. It's like watching a coming-of-age romance movie.

I saw clear shifts from when the relationship hit turning points in certain years. I proposed a timeline in my head based on that. Imagine my fucking surprise when I found out other people have also come up with timelines, and more surprising yet, they were all unbelievably similar to mine, down to what changed in what half of the year. I, who had no previous knowledge that this was even a thing. I just noticed it all on my own. We were all seeing the same thing. The same changes. No red circles, no slow-mo, no mind reading. It's all in the body language.

I panicked a little because overall it seemed too good to be true, so I reached out to a taekooker friend to send me her best evidence videos and receipts because I just had to make sure I wasn't going totally delulu here. I needed to see that the other biggest ship had interactions and moments on the same level with that same consistency, maybe even their very own relationship timeline to bring me back down to Earth. But... there's nothing. Really, there's nothing between taekook. Not one moment where I was like, oh? You'll find hours-long jikook content videos that are absolutely jam-packed with content, significant content, but that sort of depth just doesn't exist for taekook. Instead, you get conspiracy theories.

I watched most of the videos on that best of jikook channel and several other staple channels. It wasn't as if I bought into everything presented. I still rolled my eyes at many things that were blown out of proportion by some creators, and jikook isn't free from red circles and slow-mo and bullshit. And yet, I was still overwhelmed by the mountain of crisp receipts dumped on my head.

Jikook have much, much more solid evidence supporting the theory that they are together than evidence against it. I took the facts as they are, took my social experiences for what they are, took my psychology background for what it is, and concluded that they are most likely together, probability-wise. At the very least, they are the ONLY pair in BTS that have ANY legitimate possibility of being romantically involved. If jikook isn't real, then none of the other ships have any hope whatsoever, let's not kid ourselves. It's them or none of them.

They also have much, much more evidence that they are together than with any random man or woman you wanna throw at them. There needs to be valuable evidence or a total shutdown for me to tip the scale. I'm going to need Jimin or Jungkook to state, "I am not dating anyone at all," or "Get out of your imagination," or a bighit relationship announcement, or a clear video of lip-on-lip action or very intimate interaction with someone else.

Frankly, I don't give a single fuck about a grainy pic/video when it's 2023 and there's no excuse for that. I don't give a fuck who owns the same vase or cooking pots. I don't give a fuck if either of them hugged a woman. These are not evidence. These aren't even as good as the worst Jikook evidence.

At this point in time, Jikook is still the only viable option with the information we currently have available to us. This is my opinion and I stand by it.

At the end of the day, the thing I want most is for Jimin to be happy. Currently, it seems that Jungkook makes Jimin the happiest (as Jungkook says). As long as that holds true, I'll be here. If that changes at some point in time, I'd accept it.

But until that day comes, what the fuck else am I supposed to think?

Cirque du Soleil ("circus of the sun") is a Montreal-based company that's been producing animal-less circus shows since 1984 (you may recall a joke about this from Madagascar 3 lol). Most follow a very basic plot of "[character] gets isekai'd for approximately 1h38m then goes home" but it's honestly so much more fun to make up stories one one's own imho. They're also usually composed in Grommelot, an invented language that's usually a mix of multiple languages and gibberish - i.e., it's not supposed to be understood.

A little-known fact about me is that I grew up watching recordings of these shows (because ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS A PROSHOT 🙏) and love them to bits. I've seen Alegria (pre-revival), Kooza, and Kurios live as well.

The official CdS youtube channel has been uploading tons of compilations since 2020. This year, to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary, they've also been releasing a bunch of abridged versions of their shows, which you can view on youtube here.

1: Varekai

oghhghgh my gosh I love this show. so much. absolutely devastated it's not touring anymore :(. If they ever bring it back then I NEED to see it. You understand

This has one of the more plotty premises: rather than falling to the sea and dying, it begins with Icarus falling into a strange land and healing through the power of... love? Communal support? It doesn't really matter because the MUSIC and the STAGING and the COSTUMES oh my GOD the COSTUMES. It's such a bright and fun time with good vibes all around and I cannot recommend it enough. Bonus for Greek mythology references. Did I mention the COSTUMES

2: Quidam (2 and 3 are interchangeable for me, depends on my mood)

CdS claims that this show isn't about much. This is a lie. I could write SO MANY ESSAYS on the symbolism in Quidam and all the different interpretations people have about it. Its soundtrack is also an absolute banger that I love listening to on my own time.

The only thing to be aware of before going into Quidam is that it's a bit of a downer. I think it's the most somber of any CdS show I know of.

3: Alegria (original)

Possibly the most well-known CdS show. No joke, I think I've been watching this proshot for my entire life. I think I saw this proshot before I ever saw a cartoon.

Another great soundtrack - I like the original 1994 recording the best. Francesca Gagnon is ICONIC as the singer in white.

This is one of the few non-isekai shows out there; it depicts a kingdon that has just lost its king and shows a brewing tension between the "old birds" in the aristocracy and the young upstarts who hope for structural change.

Mystère may have been the show that solidified the CdS format, but Alegria is so ridiculously well-known and unforgettable that it's always struck me as the cirque show. It makes for a great entry point.

I follow an AITA blog and every time one where someone involved is a system I have to scroll by because I know the AITA is just gonna be someone asking if they're an asshole for abusing a system all of the comments are "the system is the asshole because they're a chronically online delusional faking 13 year old manipulative sociopathic narcissistic immature freak" which not only shows off like ninety OTHER layers of ableism but is also just. so much fucking vitriol toward systems for no reason. On other confession blogs there's always a dozen confessions about how evil fakers online are tricking innocent singlets into thinking everyone has DID and they always have like 9 times the usual amount of reblogs and all the tags are like "#THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". There's r/fakedisordercringe and "best of fakedisordercringe" compilations on YouTube and people on TikTok love to not only make 30 piece long slideshows about evil fakers online (see above) but then also it's like. the funny haha meme on there to tell systems they deserved their trauma and should go through more of it. This has just turned into a rant there is SO much ableism I see and suffer thru online as a system member so thank you for showing explicit support for systems. It's tiny but it means a lot to me to know that not everyone thinks of ppl like me as monsters who "get what they deserve" yknow

Hi, so I'm writing this on my phone while watching Hermitcraft. Lol. These are thoughts that have been bouncing around my head for a while.

-Grian's wings-

I think they shapshift. Think about it. We, the audience and the artists, are constantly making different variations of Grian. Either through the art itself or through headcannons. "Cannon" wise, we are the Watchers, and We gave Grian his wings.

There's Parrot Grian, which is pretty much default Grian at this point. Then there's white winged Grian, which could either be a dove or a chicken. Theres the desert birb Grian because of Life series Desert-Duo. There's the recent King Fisher Grian because of his fishing addiction this season. Then there's his Watcher form, which usually ends up being biblical accurate angel. Which I think the multiple wings are the different kinds of bird avian hybrid We make Grian into. (This will probably be the only "original" thought that's been going through my head. The rest of this is me compiling HCs I've heard/seen/watched and have been brimming full to talk and analyze, tho the analyzing will probably be a different post lol)

-Grian's Family-

There's a lot of HCs when it comes to family connects to Grian. There's YHS background that left him as an abandoned kid in Japan. Nadia225 gave Grian adopted Mafia parents, which is really cool, and you should watch their videos because they're really talented. And they gave Grian Bio-parents where one is a Water and the other is a Listener. And they're royalty. There's HCs of him being adopted by Philza (which honestly makes no sense to me because I think Grian is older than Philza. Character wise too.) And then He gets adopted by Xisuma. So parental figure-wise, there are a few to choose from.

Sibling wise... that's even bigger. There's the classic Jimmy and Pearl. There was one of Scar and Pearl being sibs to Grian. (The sibling dance animation that I can't remember the youtubers name to credit) There's Etho, through choice, with Nadia225 (or that's how I've interpreted their interactions lol). And then there's Martyn who gets thrown in, too. (But this just might be me.) Back to parent Philza, Grian gains Wilbur, Techno, Tommy, and occasionally Tubbo as younger brothers. I guess We see Grian as a big Family dude. (^○^)

Extended family tho... I have yet to see anything about aunts and uncles, not even grandparents, and my brain isn't coming up with anything.

Parent Grian always ends up adopting Tommy, but I think I've seen at least 2 fanfics where it was Tubbo instead.

-Watcher Relationships-

It's so weird. Like. Do We have a Feral Sibling relationship with Grian. Or are We mortal enemies. Is he traumatized by Us, or has he fully accepted being a Watcher. Like, I love the angst fics as much as the next Watcher, BUT PLEASE, I NEED MORE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN US, would love any fic recs anyone has, lol.

-Martyns cannon-

I still need to actually research this one, but at the end of Evo (Grian pov) it is /heavily/ implied that Grian joins the Watchers, seemingly by choice. Then I moved on to hermitcraft 6-9 and binge watched that. So if there's any Martyn Cannon that can be added on plus his "headcannons" feel free to do so!

Hello Cloud’ika. Brain rot is real. Also the YouTube comments are an awful black hole from which not even light escapes but there’s gems amid the trash. I was scrolling through the compilation animation from the live stream and found a couple nuggets of fantastic prose. Is this what happens in The Oddessey? No. But I listened to We’ll Be Fine, Love in Paradise and God Games on near constant repeat and think that Athena and Ody need a reunion where he can see that she fought for him.

Silence fell in the colosseum, a feat considering the parties in attendance. Zeus stared down at the crumpled form of his daughter.

Why would this favored child go to such lengths? To risk not only Poseidon’s wrath but her own destruction at his own hands in punishment. Surely this wasn't rebellion like he'd feared...

“Let him go, husband.” Hera crossed the expanse from the spectator seats to dais where his throne sat.

“She already bargained for his release with all of us.” Hephestus added quietly, taking a spot opposite the queen, and spoke only loud enough to be heard.

“She regards both Odysseus and his son as being worth all... this.” Ares gestured to the ichor leaking from the Goddess's wounds as he stepped around her to join the other olympians at the throne, unsubtly checking for signs of life in his counterpart in war.

“Apollo, tend to her.” Zeus commanded, his expression becoming almost regretful for a moment at the sight of the unconscious goddess. The god of medicine and music obeyed instantly, pulling the limp goddess into his lap to assess the multitude of wounds. “Hermes!” The messenger god appeared, none of his usual flippant tone in his greeting.

“Yes, My Liege?”

“You're bound for Ogygia, to the daughter of Atlas, with orders to release Odysseus of Itha—“

“I will come with you.” Athena struggled to rise as she spoke with a groan. “Father, I would be part of this delegation to Calypso.”

“You are wounded, Sister Dear.” Apollo objected, trying to keep her from standing.

“Please. I must answer his plea.” she pleaded, once more endeavoring to stand. “He needs me.”

Zeus gave her a long hard look, which she shrank ever so slightly from, before amending his command slightly.

“And Athena will join you in retrieving her champion.”

“Calypso, Darling.” Hermes sang as the two Olympians materialized on the beach of the enchanted island. Athena was standing, but only just, and she leaned heavily on the messenger god as well as her spear. The bright colors of the foliage faded as the Nymph appeared.

“Hermes, to what do w— do I owe the pleasure?”

“Where is he?” Athena asked, drawing Calypso’s attention to her.

“Whatever happened to you, Lady Athena?” Athena waved off the question.

Hermes cleared his throat and spoke. “I have orders from Zeus, Thunder Bringer, Lord of the Skies…” As Hermes gave the proclamation, declaring Odysseus’s release from the island, out of the illusions blanketing the coast stumbled a second person. It had been so long. Odysseus looked like a madman. His hair and beard were long and matted, the last remnants of his armor were hanging off his thin frame in tatters. Athena hurried—as much as her wounds would allow— to the man as he took in the scene on the beach and froze.

“Athena.” Hearing her Favored speak her name, the same anguish in his voice from his desperate cry from the cliff broke her heart once again.

“Odysseus…” his strength gave out right before hers did, the king of Ithaca falling into her arms before her own weakness forced her to her knees in the sand. “I’m here my friend.”

Gay OK Bangkok

Well, holy shit. I had been planning to watch this ahead of Only Friends because @shortpplfedup named it as one of the Jojo shows that would serve as a good primer for the types of themes we could expect. I didn’t know much about it except it was an Aof/Jojo collab and had openly queer cast members. I expected something like a short Thai Queer as Folk. 

And it kind of is like QaF, in the sense that it’s very much a show about a group of queer friends and their romantic (mis)adventures that features frank discussion of gay sex and sexual health practices, but it’s not really like it at all in terms of its tone. Where QaF is known for its explicit sex, trippy drug sequences, and heavy doses of camp, GOBK is much less smutty and has a thread of deep melancholy running through it (oh hi Aof), and it is primarily interested in doing some serious character work alongside delivering its messages about safe sex. And these characters got their hooks in me much more than I expected.  

I think what I appreciate most about this show is how real the characters feel. They’re wonderfully flawed, fully realized human beings—beautiful and ugly in equal measure, wrong as often as they’re right, and just doing their best to balance their needs and desires with how they want to show up for the people they love. Even the characters I didn’t like much, I still understood and felt some empathy for, and I think that’s a credit to the compassion and care with which this series is written (not a surprise given Aof and Jojo are the ones who wrote it). Everyone gets the benefit of nuance and grace, including the side characters. And to be clear, I wouldn’t consider this a bl. I’d call it a queer slice of life drama that includes romance, but is not about romance—there is no primary romantic relationship that acts as the plot driver and it’s not at all interested in happily ever afters or even firm endings for its relationships.

My only real complaint about this show is I wanted (a lot) more of it. But still, for a show that only had eight hours total runtime over two seasons, it managed to do a lot with it. I am going to avoid getting into spoilers because as usual, I want y’all to watch this! But I really loved seeing a few years in the life of Arm, Pom, Aof, Big, Sathang, and their various friends, family, and lovers. And, crucially, it’s all so very queer. There is so much to unpack here about the nature of loneliness and desire and the guilt and shame that often comes along with them. The show is interested in exploring lots of ways to be in love and in relationship with each other, and it lets the characters fight, fuck up, break up, make up, and express their own confusion and discomfort and dissonance along the way. The only thing it’s interested in being preachy about are safe sex practices; everything else is presented in shades of gray. And it doesn’t limit itself to romance; we see the characters at work and with their families and out living their daily lives in a society that is often actively hostile to them. This show sits squarely at the center of @wen-kexing-apologist’s by/for/about Venn diagram (can’t wait for you to watch this, friend).

I highly recommend this show to anyone who plans to watch Only Friends (which, by my count, is just about everyone I know on here)—homework is of course not required before enjoying a new drama, but I do think familiarity with this work will enhance your experience, and it’s such a quick watch! Wrote a little snippet for my “Grace joins the cheer squad” halocheer AU! There’s also a little bit of my “Pete joined the popular kids in middle school and now he’s a bully and also Max’s best friend” AU mixed in, so there’s some lowkey spankerman going on in the background, but it won’t be the main focus and it’s only really hinted at in this section.

If Brenda doesn’t do something drastic, Hatchetfield is doomed. Well, Hatchetfield High, at least.

See, cheer is more than a sport. It’s more than a hobby. It’s more than a thing she does that makes her cool and hot and popular (that’s just a bonus). It’s a promise to keep the team’s hopes up, even when things couldn’t look bleaker. It’s a responsibility to keep the entire town from falling into a gloomy state, which can last upwards of two weeks when they lose to Clivesdale—which is exactly what’s going to happen if she can’t figure out how to revamp the squad and get some pep in their step.

It’s not that they’re particularly bad or anything. Lately, their routines have been clean and tight. They move in perfect harmony, executing their perfectly choreographed moves flawlessly. Their cheers are just as loud, just as passionate, just as energetic, and lately, they’ve added some really catchy and creative verses about how much Clivesdale sucks. Those are always a hit with the crowd, even at games where they aren’t playing against Clivesdale. None of this stops the team from losing, though.

For a while, Brenda’s had a sense that their usual tricks are getting stale, and even with their super awesome new chant about how nobody cares about the stupid fucking cherry festival, they aren’t enough anymore. What they need is to shake things up. Do something bold and daring that gives them an edge. Do something completely unexpected. Figuring out what exactly that is is exhausting, though. It’s taking more brain power than all six of her classes combined, which is fine, because it’s way more important, but it’s starting to get draining.

“Maybe we should bedazzle our uniforms with one of those guns on those late night TV ads,” says Stacy as they walk the hallway side by side. “It’d be eye catching. And maybe if the sun hit them just right, the light would reflect right into the opposing team’s eyes and temporarily blind them!”

“Stace,” she says. “I love you, but who the fuck still gets informericals? Who the fuck still has cable?”

Stacy’s face falls, and it tugs at Brenda’s heart a little. Maybe that was a little harsh. When did she become such a buzzkill? It must be this whole cheer conundrum getting her down.

“It was a YouTube compilation,” Stacy says wistfully.

“Okay, we can bedazzle something, just not our cheer uniforms.” Much to Brenda’s relief, Stacy immediately perks up again.

“Denim jackets?” she says excitedly.

“As long as you promise never to wear double denim.”

Stacy’s face contorts into a disgusted expression. “Double denim? Oh, God, ew, of course not! Who do you think I am?”

Brenda smiles softly. “Your place after the game this Friday?”

Stacy eagerly agrees, and Brenda really is looking forward to it now, but the reminder that the game is, in fact, this Friday brings her attention back to her original problem. She wishes the answer would just fall into her lap.

“Hey, ho! Heck, no! Co-ed dances gotta go,” cries Grace Chasity as she marches in their direction and hoists her picket sign up high, her movement animated and full of energy, her eyes burning with passion, her voice ringing out loud and clear through the mostly empty hallway. Max stalks this hallway more than any other, waiting for Pete to get out of class, and nerds avoid it like the plague (which is probably inconvenient for them, because this is where all of the math and science classrooms are and nerds love that shit). Most nerds avoid it, anyway.

“She’s actually really good at chanting,” she says to Stacy absently.

“Yeah, she’s a natural,” she agrees.

Really, it’s a shame that Grace is wasting those skills and that energy fighting to get homecoming canceled, of all things. Brenda would be surprised if she’d gotten a single signature. She admires the drive and dedication, at least. Max tried to menace her into stopping—probably because there’s somebody he obviously wants to take to the dance this year, even if he thinks he’s playing it cool and being slick about it—and she didn’t back down. She wasn’t even scared of him. She’s kind of badass, actually. It’s a little sexy, the way she told him off and didn’t give a fuck.

“Imagine her on the cheer squad.”

Stacy tilts her head and gives her a quizzical look. Brenda’s just about to reply that she was only joking, but then stops herself. Wait a minute. She might be onto something here. It would definitely be unexpected, and it would give them the edge she’s been looking for.

“No, seriously, she should join the cheer squad! I know she’s a little weird, but maybe a little weirdness is what we need. C’mon, Stace! There’s so much on the line here! We’re the only thing standing between this school and losing to the fucking Chemists.”

Stacy scrunches up her brow and makes that disgusted expression again when Brenda mentions the Chemists. She looks at Brenda, then at Grace, then back at Brenda. Her face softens and becomes more thoughtful, and she nods solemnly.

“Hey, Grace!” Brenda calls after her, just before she makes it to the end of the hallway. She turns around and looks a little surprised for a second before that fiery passion returns.

A BL/GL Podcast (and YouTube Channel) Recommendation

I don't know these two personally and have never talked to either of them outside of a couple of comments on Billy's YouTube channel, but if you like BLs and GLs and enjoy podcasts on top of that, please check this one out. They work so hard on it, consistently update, and it honestly feels like spending time with friends whenever I put them on in the car, making long car rides less lonely. There are shows I plan on watching simply because they have covered them on the podcast and I want to listen to those episodes without being spoiled. Most of the shows they break down extensively, often dedicating an hour or more to each episode. They share their thoughts, theories, and have a great, friendly banter, even when they completely disagree. They usually have fun after shoes where they discuss favorite and least favorite characters, play games, talk about ships, etc. I feel like they put so much effort into the show and don't get enough love due to currently having a small audience.

They started with KinnPorsche (I suggest checking out Billy's YouTube reactions out if you are into reaction videos. He takes episode 14 HARD). They have also covered To My Star 2, Love in the Air, 23.5, Only Friends, Sense 8, Pit Babe, Moonlight Chicken, and a lot more. I believe Love in the Air is one long episode, but the rest are broken down per episode, which gives listeners a lot of material to fill their time with on their commutes.

As for Billy's YouTube Channel, he reacts to a lot of different BL and GL series, some they haven't yet covered on the podcast. He also reacts to animated series and uploads gaming sessions from his Twitch.

Since most follow me for KinnPorsche related things, I will share his KinnPorsche playlist here, which has each episode reaction as well as BOC video upload reactions. I have like...3 saves for HS:R (might buy the extra slots someday). I like how the story could differ a lot depending on the choices you take and the paths you're on. I find that the decisions you make could affect your overall experience with HS:R, too.

I'm pursuing Greg in my first and third slot just to see how different the interactions would be between humanity vs no humanity path.

When it comes to MC, I use 3 different sprites for each saves. Most of them were based on anime or game characters I like.

MC's appearance was based on Lain from "Serial Experiments Lain". I like how logical and cunning she is in WoD path. Her approach in life is much more ruthless but still sensible. She reminds me of Lain in episode 10 when she "misused" her power to do the right thing.

3. God's Voice (VoG)/No Compassion (no humanity) path

I took inspiration from Michiko Malandro, one of the main characters in the anime "Michiko to Hatchin". This time, I want to play as someone who knows what's right or wrong but not having enough empathy to fully understand it. Funny enough, I started this path out of....pettiness haha. I was curious about the kiss scene in the end of season 1 only to deal with the consequence in season 2 😭. I thought the kiss was done out of pity??

Someone on YT made a compilation of Michiko's outfits throughout the show. And yes, she's serving. 💅

When it comes to outfits, it's hard to pin down because I like most of them. But, I have a few that I frequently use.

Judging by how the story revolves around moving from one place to another to survive, I usually choose something more practical for her (not every outfit I've picked is the most practical, though).

A friend of a friend was doing a Google survey recently on what names the fandom uses for various characters. It included Orange, also known as Second, sometimes shortened to Sec, and occasionally abbreviated as TSC which is understood to stand for The Second Coming.

Participants in the survey were instructed to select, from a list of options, which name they primarily use for each of the characters featured. One of the examples given for clarification is that many people don't refer to Chosen by his full title of "The Chosen One" in regular conversation. Which makes sense. I tend to shorten his name to Chosen in casual conversation, whether speaking or typing; I don't usually abbreviate his name as TCO unless I tag him as such so a post reaches more people.

But what tripped me up was the other example, in reference to Orange: that being, using the name Orange to refer to him in the AvM series, but using the name Second to refer to him in the main AvA series.

...do...do people really do that? Is that how a bunch of you have been doing this?

If so, I'd really like to know why because just hearing about it like this perplexes me.

Does it come from the idea that AvA and AvM are separate timelines, that they don't share continuity? I'd heard that idea mentioned some time ago and, while I admit that the in-story chronology of Alan's videos as a whole is a mess (some information isn't even consistent between multiple videos of the same event, see: King losing his child to a different version of Minecraft in the s3 finale than is shown in the full season compilation), I don't really understand why that's enough to say they're separate continuities.

In my mind, there are too many things that fall apart if we consider these disconnected series featuring different iterations of the characters. If AvA Yellow isn't also AvM Yellow, then there's no explanation for Yellow being able to figure out a way to render a cursor into the outernet in The Showdown, because we never see AvA Yellow working with redstone so his capability has no explanation. If AvM are the only videos you know Purple from, then you won't get why the color gang are friendly with him at the end of The Witch episode because you aren't considering the events of AvLeague.

And I forget where I saw this comment, I think it was on YouTube somewhere, but somebody said that AvA Orange and AvM Orange are practically different characters and- I don't get it?? What did they see that I'm not seeing? Where's the divide? Can someone illuminate it for me???

As far as naming conventions, I do use both names for him and have reasons for which name gets used at which time, but it's not to distinguish between series, because I do believe AvA Orange and AvM Orange to be the same character.

I use the name Second to refer to him at times when his powers are active; specifically, the powers that awoke in full for the first time during The Showdown. This began as a way to demonstrate how his powers seemed to act on their own merit without his conscious input in that episode, since he has no memory of them or of anything he did while they were active. (A bit like ???% for those of you familiar with Mob Psycho 100.) But if such a time comes when he is able to maintain consciousness while his powers are active and use them deliberately, I will still continue to call him by the name Second during those times.

I use the name Orange to refer to him the rest of the time, when his powers either are dormant or are unconsciously active, such as when his drawings self-animate.

I was watching gay compilation videos on YouTube and found the Gallavich season 1-4 video, then watched too many seasons of Shameless UK (because I didn't have access to US) then watched five seasons of Shameless US, then spent 3 months reading the whole tag on AO3.

Fanfic trope that you were sure wasn’t for you but now you low key (or high key) love?

Not sure if there is one, I have tried most tropes just to check them out, and I have liked tropes I don't normally like when it's just the once and it's done in some interesting or particularly skillful way, but I don't think I've ever done a 180 on something? I suppose! I usually start out only reading canon compliant fic when I'm first entering a fandom. Then I will either run out of steam or start reading AU, or fully just transition to only reading AU (which is what happened with Shameless, more or less). So I normally start out not liking AUs and then given enough time and steam, I will make AUs my whole personality.

What surprised you most about this fandom?

I'm really surprised by what it has become, it's so nice to see all the crafts and community building that's going on here every week, and how nice and drama free (from my vantage point anyway) it has become, in the last few years. I'm not very good at participating, but I really want to because it feels like such an open and welcoming and community-focused space.

Episode 3, also on ao3 , Episode Two, Episode One

Dustin sighed as he trudged up the stairs to his room. 

“Only one video before homework, Dusty!”

“Okay, mom!” He shouted back, closing his door with a quiet click. He set his backpack down on the floor before settling into his desk chair in front of his laptop. He opened his laptop, immediately clicking on the youtube icon, searching for one of his favorite streamers to watch to decompress after school. Corrodededdie’s content was great for doing just that, especially since Mike had harassed the guy for hours and ended up getting them 12 hours of content that he’d only really made a dent in because his mother said she’d take away his laptop if he stayed up to watch the live 12 hour stream. So now he’s catching up with the compilations and freakouts he missed when he clicked out of the stream at the 8 hour mark. 

He was mindlessly scrolling, trying to find a video he’s never seen or one that’s funny enough to rewatch when a new upload catches his eye. It was only occasionally that corrodededdie uploaded videos that weren’t compilations for his live, so when he did it was particularly good. And this one was even better. 

“Holy shit,” he had to text Mike. 

‘Dude dude dude did you see Eddies new video? Steve goes to hell is in it asbfjdhcnbd’

‘Wtf no hav u watched it yet’

‘Watching rn’

He clicked on the video titled “Steve gets corroded,” and settled in, he could tell this one was going to be good. “What’s up shit heads! I’ve got Steve goes to hell here with me today to play the slenderman game,” Eddie’s voice floated through his speakers, “You call your subscribers shitheads?”

“Yeah, what do you call yours?” 

“Uh. Usually I just say ‘hey guys.’” Dustin could see the connection through the screen, and he let the smile spread across his face. He was positively enamored with this new duo and he could only hope that they did more videos like this. It was Steve’s first time playing the slenderman game and it was hilarious. He kept screaming and barking at the screen like that was somehow going to help him. And Eddie was trying to help but couldn’t get the words out because he was too busy laughing at Steve. “You do this for fun? Jesus, it’s giving me a heart attack,” Steve said, and Dustin watched as Eddie laughed maniacally. “It is fun!” 

“No it’s not! Agh!” 

 As the video went on, Dustin grew more and more confused. They were a good duo but it seemed like they were closer than they let on. Eddie would scare Steve and then immediately comfort him afterwards. It was still his normal brand of chaos but a little softer? How interesting. He briefly wonders if he’s reading into this too much, and maybe they’re just really fast friends, but a comment pops up from another viewer telling them to ‘get a room.’ 

The video came to an end as Steve screamed at the 6th time slenderman killed him, and Eddie cried with laughter in the background. “Eddie, that was awful.” Steve said, scrubbing a hand over his face and turning away from the monitor. “It wasn’t that bad.” Steve shook his head and pushed at Eddie’s shoulder, and then the screen went blank. Dustin sat back in his chair, searching through the comments. 

‘Nancy and Rob: You guys are so gross’

‘El212: are they dating??’

‘Madmax44: they’re a couple for sure’

‘Corrodededdie: a couple of besties’

‘Steve goes to hell: the fuck dawg?’

Dustin shook his head at their antics. Whatever was happening with them was kind of weird, but it worked out in Dustin’s favor. If they make two videos together, one for each of their channels, that was twice the content! 

‘I don’t like that guy,’ it was a text from Mike, who was notoriously grumpy, he sighed, of course Mike didn’t like Steve. Mike didn’t like anything fun except for DnD and the only sessions they’ve had were the online version which, to be honest, sucks. So he ignored the text from Mike and pulled out his calculus homework. That would be more fun than trying to get Mike to see the appeal of ‘Steve goes to hell’ anyways.

It had been a few weeks since Eddie and Steve’s first collab and Dustin was getting antsy for new content. Luckily for him, Robin of “Nancy and Rob” had uploaded a new vlog, and although she wasn’t his favorite, it was still content. And the fact that she was friends with both Steve and Eddie gave him a sliver of hope that there’d be at least a few crumbs of content from both of them. And oh boy was there. The video started out with Robin opening the door to Steve, pulling him inside and sitting him on the couch. She immediately got into the video and asked Steve what the last text he sent was. She had quite the mischievous grin on her face. Steve read the last text, it was talking about some guy. 

Dustin watched as Robin wrestled the phone away from Steve before showing the screen to her camera. It was a screenshot from one of Eddie’s videos. Oh my god, Steve was asking for Eddie’s instagram. This must’ve been from a few weeks ago, seeing as Steve and Eddie definitely knew each other now. Dustin wiggled in his seat excitedly. Two of his favorite creators were becoming one. (If the influx of videos they were making together said anything.)

Though, there was still the debate of whether or not the two were dating. Dustin considered what they had shown on camera, and they were pretty cozy with each other, but whenever asked about their relationship they only ever said they were “besties,” with matching grins. 

And look, Dustin wasn’t blind, he could see that the two were feeling some type of way about each other, he just couldn’t tell what type of way that really was. Dating feelings? Best Friendly feelings? When he talked to Will about it, the resident gay of his closest friends, he’d only shrugged and said maybe. Now, he’s probably right, that they were just friends, but Dustin has never acted like that with any of his friends. 

In the end, it didn't really matter because they were making content together and that was good enough for Dustin, and apparently everyone else. Soon enough it wasn’t a ‘Steve goes to hell’ video if Eddie didn’t at least make a cameo. 

In their most recent video, they had made a birthday cake for Piggy, Steve’s beloved but albeit, raggedy old cat. And this particular video didn’t help the relationship allegations because whenever Steve would talk about his friend Tommy, or any of his exes, Eddie would go “The fuck dawg?” Like he was jealous or something. Despite the debate the content that came out of it was hilarious, Eddie’s chaotic energy matched with Steve’s mildly anxious energy created something wonderfully funny, and something about the two was so endearing it made Dustin only want more. 

And he wasn’t the only one who thought so. Whenever Eddie would go live anymore, the chat would be full of questions asking where Steve was until Eddie finally gave in and called for him to come make a cameo. Luckily for the viewers, it seemed like he was always there. And it made Dustin wonder if Steve ever went back to his own house.
