rewatched madoka magica again today bc i fucking hate myself and to absolutely no one’s surprise i went through all five stages of grief in a single evening
#let’s talk about sayaka miki for a second#genuinely the fact that her whole character is centered around tragedy almost to a shakespearean extent#she’s selfless and brave and values her justice and righteousness above all. calls herself an ally of justice#in fact i think it’s rather intriguing how her whole character is centered around “justice”#her story being a more twisted retelling of the original little mermaid#how she is initially portrayed as a very heroic and confident character even before becoming a magical girl. always shielding madoka#selling her soul to heal the boy she loved out of a selfless desire to see him well again#her being absolutely distraught abt being robbed of her humanity and betrayed by kyubey#she combats this harrowing realization by immersing herself in her duties not caring that she is slowly deteriorating in the process#becoming numb with pain and fighting recklessly and psychotically trying to drown out the pain#finally coming to the sickening conclusion that humanity doesn’t deserve her saving and she succumbs to a fate of her making#last words being “i was so stupid” which trumps her previous statement of “there’s no way i’d regret this”#ALSO? the fact that her costume and weapon are symbolic of a knight. she rly portrays this hero of justice who will protect and defend ☹️#i think abt the fact that homura said that sayaka’s wish was so selfless it was only a matter of time before she died#sayaka being the example of what happens to magical girls who go through the entire cycle and eventually become witches is so sad to me#genuinely just like. sick and twisted#very very fucked up.#characters who have their own misconstrued interpretation of “justice” or who are centered around justice in general.#you will always be dear to me.#sayaka reminds me a lot of akechi in some ways ngl#harboring an almost idealized vision of justice but it slowly rots and festers and corrupts their hearts the more immersed w it they become#actually losing their sanity when they fight bc of how much pain they’re in but refuse to acknowledge it until they break#refusing any help and wallowing in misery despite having ppl who love them and want to save them#last words are those expressing regret for being such a fool. for being ignoring#being used by yhe main villain as a stepping stone towards their true goal. they were merely a pawn#also doomed in every version of their reality. always doomed by the narrative no matter what choices they make#i have a type i fear#HAHAHAH ALSO the fact that they’re both dressed so regally compared to everyone else in their respective series#meant to portray them in a virtuous and princely light. only made more apparent by the sword being their weapon of choice#i’m gonna shut up now but they’re soo eerily similar its unnerving tbh 💀

Sometimes i remember a comics moment i randomly came across somewhere, where Sam Wilson mentiones a musical and Steve Rodgers says he doesn't like musicals, to whitch Sam goes "Guess that means you really are straight" and even tho i don't care about Cap America or the Avengers, the moment stuck in me for that quote by Sam. And like....Sci, any ideas if straight men actually don't like musicals or is that bullshit?
actually i think i know more gay men who hate musicals than i know straight men who hate musicals. i've had a drag queen stop me point blank when i was about to sing a barbra streisand song, and i know so many gays who pointedly hate abba. so based on my experience i think the inverse is true. most of the straight men i know are kind of impartial about musicals, but gay men? hate.
my theory is that a lot of gay men don't want to fall into stereotypes, maybe. but thaaaaat's just a theory! a gay theory.
#sci speaks#i'm trying to understand the gays. they are a mystery to me.#i've seen a lot more toxic masculinity coming from gay men than i have from straight men.#i think it makes sense. they have less women in their lives. so they reckon with a lot more masculinity. more dick measuring.#also gay men have some of THE most unhealthy romantic relationships i've ever seen in my life.#this isn't a blanket statement on everyone but just from what i've seen. it's such a strange pattern i've observed.#lesbians? healthy. straights? usually healthy. gay men? universally a tire fire that makes me say “if you hate each other so much ??”#“why are you together??????????”#i have never met a cis gay mlm couple in real life that was healthy. every single one of them made my eyes widen in horror.#i want them to be healthy. please treat each other better.#the number of bitchy bitchy fights i've seen between mlm couples in public that make me so terrified#but i know mlm relationships in general are usually less... affectionate than wlw relationships. even and especially friendships.#just an observation.#i hate to say that there is a definite difference between amab vs afab experiences when it comes to relationship dynamics but.#of course there is. there is. as much as i want to say gender and sex do not matter. it really does.#it makes a difference. it does.#which is kind of why i'm glad i was born in the body i was. when people say “trans means you feel you were born in the wrong body”#im like.. i don't think that's true. i don't think that's true for me.#i wouldn't be me if i wasn't born the way i was. and i want to be me. but i'm a boy. i'm a boy but in the body that i have.#my body is still a boy's body. because i live in here.#sorry this went off on a tangent.#but yeah i know my brain would be different if i was amab. and i don't want all those other issues.#i think the only reason i'm so peaceful and serene is because i'm afab. and afabulous.#i see cis guys and im like.. yeah i don't want what you got.#once again! lucky to be me! i'm lucky. im lucky i have a vargooba. thank fuck for that!#couldve been so much worse off. could've been born with a dick and would be fighting for my life right now.

Maybe I need to write Cardinal's Map so there's a contemporary book about the power of literature and reaching for a world beyond the mundane that isn't wall-to-wall inspirational platitudes with vague worldbuilding about the battle between the forces of good vs. evil.
#i say as though i would be able to avoid trite inspirational platitudes and vague worldbuilding#anyway my driving-filled day had me listening to nearly half of 'nightfall in the garden of deep time'#and i do like it#but it seems to be an awfully long and wordy book for a very simple story#(maybe it's the author's librivox-ish narration and my increased listening speed making it worse but it's still a thing)#anyway the vague inspirational messages about the power of creativity are getting to be a bit much#especially combined with worldbuilding that's mostly cryptic statements about how important it is for art to be good true and beautiful#which is a good thing! it'd just be nice if it was even a little subtle about it sometimes#i feel like this suffers coming after the latest amanda dykes book#with a lot of beauty but also a lot of characters who spoke solely in artsy inspirational platitudes#and coming after that one mg time travel book#that was supposed to be about a bookshop bringing in people from across time#but turned out to mostly be 'books are good which means this bookshop is full of good magic that needs to balance evil magic'#which was very stupid and didn't make use of the bookshop part of the premise at all#and anyway those similarities are dragging this book down for me#actually 'once a queen' did a pretty decent job with these kinds of things#worldbuilding kind of vague and metaphory but overall still an actual world#and characters who learned lessons without everyone in their life speaking only to metaphorically discuss the theme#anyway the actual book in question has me invested#but also rushing through it to get to the story beats because it's taking too long to get there#starting to suspect this would have made a good novella#because we know she's going to have a creative epiphany so dragging out the metaphors only hurts things

just read (from an extremely unreliable source) that booth had wanted to give his diamond stickpin to one of secretary seward’s maids who he had a thing for. which is extremely unlikely, (the source also suggests that booth might have already given the pin to her, which is why it wasn’t found on his body—a claim that i have a whole host of issues with) BUT. it does make me even more insane to think that booth had wanted to give the pin to a girl he was in love with, but had promised it to david instead.
or that david knew that booth wanted to give the pin to a girl he was in love with, and tried to claim it for himself after booth’s death.

Giving Limbo a blackboard and chalk in an age where everyone uses glass tablets and holograms is so so so endearing to me. Quills and parchment type of guy. He just needs to write an entire blackboard full with one equation as enrichment. I think Ordis can handle the dust just fine as far as filters go but maybe less so in terms of mental fortitude
(Operator becoming the rubber ducky for extremely complicated multidimensional math they don't understand in 3, 2, 1... )
You see, according to my lavos (Higgins), the correct amount of containers into which to put science is "one more." He also has shitall concept of personal space and a tendency to forget that his complicated thought processes are not universal, so now he's banned from mugs. Luckily the mug that North (drifter) had grabbed only had yeast in it that Higgins got from an ostron for science reasons, but it's still not a fun thing to knock back instead of the chimurr you were expecting at like 6 in the morning
so we have previously established that limbo & lavos would be science besties, right
i propose:
limbo has cat energy: acts like he knows everything but is in fact a bit of a dumbass outside his exact field of expertise, will nap in weird places
lavos has dog energy: will lick the science, outdoorsy (science field trips), makes friends easy

i don't want to put my uninformed foot in my mouth or get involved with the Discourse but i've been seeing the two extremes of reactions to the korean low birth rates issue (on tumblr and twitter both) and i'm just kind of like. look. i feel like "low birth rates (in many countries but especially japan and korea as part of this conversation) are more broadly the result of capitalism/a culture of overwhelming overwork that makes social relationships and having families incredibly inaccessible to young people" and "low birth rates are very much a part of the current conversation about misogyny and social expectations for women in korea especially in the context of reproduction as 'unpaid labor' for women" are statements that can both be true
#laughs awkwardly#gender#especially considering the ways patriarchal expectations and capitalism very much intersect in terms of quality of life for women#ex. women being expected to have kids / raise kids / do all the housework and cooking in a relationship#while ALSO existing in a society where women (even married women) have to work demanding jobs to deal with the high cost of living#AND women are systemically discriminated against in terms of pay / job availability / work environment and harassment#all of these things add up. these conversations are not opposing points of view. you know?#and also like. not super comfortable with how TERFs are discussed in terms of non-white cultures#TERFism / radfems as a MOVEMENT (and a cult) is very much rooted in white supremacy / ideals of womanhood#again. multiple things can be true at the same time. yes i do see (from my perspective involved in taiwanese social media)#some east asian feminists engage in transphobia in ways that approach radfem rhetoric ('women are victims of men' 'men are predators'#type generalized sentiments which you can imagine gains a lot of traction among women traumatized by patriarchy)#but movement-wise i don't think it's fair (or just in good faith) to generalize radical feminists from non-white countries#to straight up TERFs. which again. rooted in white supremacy. keep feeling like i have to remind people it doesn't make sense#for asians to be white supremacists and that not all oppression on earth stems directly from white people. you weirdos#'what are you talking about' in east asia the type of feminist statements called 'radical' are stuff like.#women shouldn't have to wear make up every time they go outside. women shouldn't be expected to do all housework.#should men pay for women on dates. debates that i think in the states we kind of take for granted as stuff settled years ago#even if some feminists might be transphobic it's not necessarily Transphobia As Core Tenets Of The Movement. does anyone get the difference#basically what i'm saying is. wow these tags got long. maybe let's not apply uniform standards of 'correct language and values'#to non-white people and attack them when as all movements they are fluid and influenced by the people living in it#TERF-style transphobia is not the predestined course for them. maybe it's more productive to have open discussions about transphobia#to work towards inclusivity and solidarity in these movements than to prescribe White Internet Morality to them#and declare that they're evil when they are still very much having conversations that need to be had. thanks i think that's all#essentially. i find that 'how dare a non-american movement not have morally pristine vocabulary priorities and membership#as determined by white leftists' to be in itself kinda a racist attitude

everybodys all lets condemn people with Morally Impure Interests until all of a sudden you have an interest that is suddenly considered Impure and wanes in and out of Public Opinion for many years because nobody actually knows how to think for themselves online. personally i think we'd all be very lonely if we chose and broke friendships based on.... What Video Games They Like and like absolutely nothing else regarding the person's character

people really love to conveniently forget trans men exist when they talk about feminism. or if they dont they make us out as also part of the problem as if we somehow are able to have the same amount of privilege as cis men. absolutely wild
#“not all men” is a valid statement because its fucking true#like guys. seriously. not every single man is evil#feminism isnt about putting men down its about raising women up to be equal and getting rid of gender inequality#sorry im seeing a massive uptick in people hating on trans men for being men lately and its fucking stupid#like yall are doing a great job at making me feel ashamed to be a man who likes men. awesome thanks guys#i dont normally make posts like this but its been rattling around in my mind for a few days now#its always put out like. all men (trans or not) are Inherently Evil and all women (trans or not) are Inherently Victims#which is absolutely the stupidest shit ive ever seen#and they also leave out anyone who doesnt fit into the man/woman dichotomy. and if they dont its always seen as woman lite#which is also stupid as fuck#not every nb/agender/other person is feminine asshole#anways. case in point. can we stop demonizing masculinity while also discussing the effects of misogyny and the patriarchy please.#because both of those things are very real and very much do hurt people#but im sick of people lashing out at trans men as if the problem magically doesn't affect us anymore because we are men#because guess what! newsflash! it affects trans AND cis men too!!#i shouldnt have to explain it should be obvious but like. im tired man#sorry ill forever be annoyed at women who just hate every single man who dares breathe in their direction because they COULD be an asshole#if you hate someone because of their gender no matter what gender it is i Do Not Trust You#anyways thanks for coming to my ted talk. replies are off cause i dont want to argue with people i just want to express my opinion

i'm gonna start wearing catholic iconography for real. i'm gonna start being really insane about catholicism in my day to day life. noooooo you don't understand i mean it for Real this time i've been extremely normal about it so far
#valentine notes#now i know you might think 'hey. bracken rarely even leaves the house without a cross on him. what does he mean For Real'#'bracken is already extremely weird about catholicism in both his behavior and his fashion choices'#yeah. sure. but you all have to understand that this is also me at a Baseline being very normal#which. is not the same as every few months when i get the urge to Practice catholicism.#escaped the 'i need to go to church' urge last summer (barely) but now i am collecting little catholicism items again...#little kitschy gold archangel figurine on my bookshelf. saint sebastian pendant on. only going to get worse#SO bad actually. went 'i should get a little bible to carry around' as i was writing that last tag no you SHOULDN'T#anyway once i find a way to incorporate my gorgeous rosary into day to day life.#SO BAD. BEEN THINKING ABOUT PRAYING THE ROSARY. LIKE AS A HABIT.#anyway saint sebastian pendant never leaving my neck ever again i'm so....#i'm. gonna look like i practice catholicism for real maybe.#this is not a statement that's true because i dress in a manner that is very clearly not Religious Guy.#but like. hey. dkfjgh. if someone showed up in a saint necklace every single day what conclusion would you draw#asking for science#CANNOT wear it to work unfortunately. not cause there's any rules against it but i'm personally not going to bring#religious imagery around the kids. i get away with little cross jewelry nd stuff but like#having to explain to a child what the t on this coffin necklace is. well. i will not be responsible for introducing a child to christianity#anyway who wants to see my saint sebastian pendant :D#catholic tag

But it was salem ignorence that cause all of this sure what the gods did to her was awful but they right you cant just play with life and death (also they punish her the second time she try it when she talk to the god of darkness) if ruby will bring penny back it would mean that salem is right and the gods are wrong
Anon, I rewatched the segment with the brother gods and I recommend you do too. You wanna talk about playing with life and death?
How's this: the brother gods, after committing genocide on humanity, talk about how this was an interesting experiment but they'll go to other planets now because this one's a Remnant of what it once was. You know, because they committed genocide?
They created an entire sentient species to worship them, and then when a few groups of that sentient species did something they didn't like? They killed everyone.
So yeah, there was a lot of playing with life and death going on there. All of humanity was an experiment to them.
It's not Salem's ignorance that caused all this. This happened because the brother gods were so mad at a grieving woman tricking them into bringing her husband back to life that they decided to punish her. And the god of darkness explicitly says that this means she'll never be able to see her husband again! He knows how horrible that is!
So yeah, it would mean the gods were wrong. Because they are wrong.
What Salem is doing now? Yeah that's really bad. Obviously. But back then, she was a grieving woman who wanted to bring back this one person who she loved. And had the brother gods just told her she wouldn't be able to contact them again, that would have been that. Maybe she would have lived, maybe she would have tried to join Ozma in the afterlife, to put it mildly. Even immortal, that was what she initially tried to do.
The brother gods play with life and death constantly. All of humanity was their game with life and death. When talking to each other the god of light says that it's a balance they agreed on. It was their choice. They didn't punish Salem for playing with life and death, they punished her for tricking them and wrapped it in a bow of learning about the meaning of life and death. But really, they were mad that she tricked them.
Salem wasn't wrong for trying to get her husband back, the gods were wrong to punish her.
I don't know if they should have brought Ozma back, but they sure as hell shouldn't have made Salem immortal about it. Or killed everyone after she gathered some of humanity to fight them in an attempt that was completely incapable of doing any damage.

sometimes it's fun to hear abt how certain scams came down (at least when they have a happy ending and the people hurt get refunds or some other compensation) but man. there's always people who are gonna say "this was so obviously a scam and anyone who fell for it is just stupid" and i find that. upsetting ig? especially when the red flags are things you have to actively look for/be relatively well versed in certain topics to notice
like i watched a video breaking down the day before and how its scam went down and everyone in the comments is talking abt how stupid gamers are and only very little people are like "hey. most people don't read game news or follow every trailer and update about games, they just see one cool trailer and want to buy the game" and even then! people respond to it saying "well that's stupid, you shouldn't do that" like bro i don't think it's fair to expect people to research every product they're gonna buy 😭 online stores yes (as in, don't give your money to dubious sites who will steal your information or just take the money and run), but this was hosted on steam. read reviews maybe, but we're talking about pre-release wishlisting or first day purchases. obviously with the gift of hindsight this is very easy to mock, especially if you ARE the type of person who's involved in gaming news and thus knows what red flags to look for, but the vast majority of people aren't and it just feels unfair
ig that's the core of it?? it's unfair. like if someone gets away with a scam you shouldn't blame the people scammed, you should blame the scammer, who usually knows how to manipulate their words and promises all in order to get people to pay them, and hopefully get away with it through loopholes. by calling people stupid for getting manipulated, you only serve the manipulator and show other potential manipulators they can get away with it too if they just target the right people 🤷‍♂️ (which is shitty to do anyway, but if looking at it from a more selfish angle helps hammer it in - one day you could end up one of those right people. you are not immune to getting scammed)

shittty anime again
Just got done rewatching the l*vi backstory ovas and jesus christ that whole ordeal is such a massive condemnation of the s*rvey corps (<= idk what people be searching) on multiple levels its actually insane. Like. The idea that you could come out of that being like wow what a tragic and harrowing ordeal l*vi is so cool and strong and brave etc and not like WHAT THE FUCK... GET HIM OUT OF HERE!!!! The way erw*n masterminded this whole plot to blackmail him into service and then indirectly got his family killed over LITERALLY NOTHING functionally ruining his whole life and then like. Rubbing in the fact that he has nowhere else to go like his plan was just to secure this talent by any means necessary (WHICH IT PRETTY MUCH WAS?) It is literally horrific 😭 and the fact that it ends with l*vi being like At The End Of The Day No One Ever Knows What Will Happen In A Situation... so I guess I'll follow this guy until I die?
