arthur: Is something wrong with you?
merlin: Yeah, I've been on a horse all day.
arthur: Is your little bottom sore?
merlin: Yes. It's not as fat as yours.
arthur: *chuckles* You know, you've got a lot of nerve for a wimp.
merlin: I may be a wimp, but at least I'm not a dollop head.
arthur: There's no such word.
merlin: It's idiomatic.
arthur: It's what??
merlin: You need to be more in touch with the people.
arthur: Describe dollop head.
merlin: In two words?
arthur: Yeah.
merlin: Prince arthur.

Merthur & Johnlock
You know what I just realized? I was (and still am) a big Johnlock shipper. I love Sherlock despite the many issues I have with it, and it was my primary mlm live action ship for a while.
Then Merlin came along.
I kid you not, I literally said out loud: “Why the fuck was I bothering with Sherlock?”
I didn’t mean it in a “show vs show” way, but more in a “vibe vs vibe” way. There was something about Merlin that made me happier and more excited than Sherlock ever did. Merlin and Arthur’s dynamic was some how so much more fun to me than John and Sherlock’s, which is interesting given the similarities.
Arthur’s a privileged royal who has Merlin take care of him. Sherlock is very capable consulting detective who has John take care of him.
Arthur and Merlin insult each other constantly without any real bite. John and Sherlock insult each other constantly without any real bite.
Both pairs pretend not to care as much as they do, and go full “kill” mode if the other is in danger.
Neither of them know what “communication” means.
Arthur and Sherlock are both self centered and arrogant. Merlin and John are both sick and tired of their bullshit.
While Arthur and Sherlock can operate without Merlin and John, they struggle significantly when they’re absent. Arthur is a helpless mess, and Sherlock can’t focus on his cases to the point of missing an incredibly obvious detail.
Merlin and John are perfectly able to exist without Arthur and Sherlock, but they are miserable or constantly thinking about them. John lives with thinking Sherlock is dead for two years, and he’s super fucking depressed, even with a girlfriend he intends to marry. Merlin can’t go anywhere or do anything without thinking about if Arthur will be safe, and talks about him constantly for no real reason.
Both pairs are willing to die to save the other.
They both get jealous/protective when someone they don’t approve of is making advances. With Merlin it’s the princesses and ladies that take advantage of him, like Sophia, Vivian and Elena (albeit unknowingly), and Mithian, even though there was nothing wrong with her. The only relationship he supports is with Gwen. John gets super aggressive and protective when Irene is messing with Sherlock. Sherlock goes out of his way to interfere and insult every woman John is involved with aside from Mary. While Arthur never sees or is confronted with the idea of Merlin actually in a relationship, I’d assume it would go pretty similarity. His response to being told that Merlin is even “seeing a girl” is disbelief and skepticism when he gets back.
They both make ridiculous amounts of direct eye contact that anyone with eyes notices as being a bit much for friends.

I could probably find even more if I continued to think about it, but my point is that they’re very similar dynamics. So why do I like Merthur so much more than Johnlock?
I finally figured it out!
It’s because in Sherlock, their relationship is constantly questioned and denied throughout the whole show. It’s both a joke, and not a joke. But because it takes place in modern times, we constantly get reminders of “he’s not my boyfriend” or “I’m not gay” and constant jabs from side characters.
Merlin doesn’t take place in an era where they would talk like that. You could come up with equivalent dialogue that fits the time period, but it would definitely feel out of place. So it just doesn’t happen. Nowhere in Merlin are Arthur and Merlin poked fun at/bugged about whether their relationship is platonic. Nowhere in Merlin does Arthur or Merlin say “I’m not gay” or “he’s not my boyfriend”.
I didn’t realize how exhausting that was until it wasn’t there.
While Arthur is definitely attracted to women, and in love with Gwen, there’s never a moment where he denies Merlin. It’s because he’s never asked, but that gives the viewer more room to interpret their feelings.
With John, he’s constantly shutting down any suggestion of being gay, or being in a relationship with Sherlock, despite all the evidence in front of his face that he feels differently about him than other people.
Now that I’ve realized it, I’m shocked at how much of a difference that made in my feelings toward the shows and ships.
EDIT AFTER SEEING SOME REPLIES/REBLOGS: This is not meant to be interpreted as a Merthur VS Johnlock post!! I am purely talking about the subconscious difference in feeling I felt but couldn’t figure out!! This is not a breakdown of all my thoughts and feelings about the two shows/ships! It’s not meant to be about one being superior than the other! That’s why the title is Merthur AND Johnlock! Just clearing that up!!

I just started watching merlin for the first time (yes i already know things like how it ends etc) and some of the merthur scenes are?? Hello? "Can you walk on your knees?" Um? Their chemistry is really good! I was wondering, have the writers/producers ever commented anything on the ship? And is merthur generally regarded as a queerbait by fans or not?
omg hello!!! merlin is thee show of all time. they really went 'arthurian legend but what if everyone was young and hot and mostly dumb jocks' and it works better than anyone would have thought lmao. and merthur are sooo romance-coded it's not even 'code' it's just. super explicit. "two sides of the same coin???" "one half cannot really hate what makes it whole??" and listen, i was i think 16 when i watched merlin for the first time, a couple of years after it ended and i knew nothing about Arthurian legend except the whole arthur-guinevere-lancelot love triangle thing but i saw their first meeting and went 'why did no one tell me this is so gay?' "can you walk on your knees" "i can take you apart with one blow" hmmm i bet you want to arthur, i bet you want to 👀
and okay, it's been a couple of years since I've been as into the fandom as i have been the last few weeks so i don't remember all the instances too well but I'm pretty sure there have been many times when the makers/cast of the show have commented on them. as far as i remember, bradley james (arthur) and colin morgan (merlin) were very diplomatic about it, katie mcgrath and angel coulby were hardcore shippers in a kinda jokey but not really way? alex vlahos (who played mordred) once called it "a love story between merlin and arthur", and I'm pretty sure julian murphy (the creator) also called it a love story a bunch of times too. so take from that what you will. the beauty of the merthur - regardless of whether it is considered romantic or not - is that it was not disputed by anyone i don't think that they were the most important relationship of the show, and the most purest form of love in the show too. (i won't go into detail right now because i don't want to spoil anything for you, but shoot me a message once you've finished it! i could, would and have written an essay about it 😂)
(as for the queerbait question - no idea. a lot of people call it queerbait in a jokey way. i don't know how serious people are about it because i don't tend to engage in those discussions. i personally don't think i can comment much on it, because i watched it years after it had finished.)

you know what?
no.  absolutely not.
i already did part 1 of this post here.  i’m back again with part 2, because unfortunately the awfulness factor doesn’t stop with arthur, and as much as i adore hunith generally, this entire sequence is a MESS.
and yes, i am aware that pretty much nobody else thinks so.  every time i see this scene referenced in fandom, it is always framed as a fun, cutesy, sing-songy moment of “oooo, hunith ships merthur!”  literally every time.
which, you know, like i always say about everything fandom-related - that’s fine.  everybody is going to enjoy things differently; you do you, and keep on having fun!  but here on my own blog, in my own space, i am gonna do me, and in this case ‘me’ involves yelling about how much i can’t stand that particular read, and how angry the end of 1.10 makes me.
disclaimer, to help folks curate their own fandom experiences: i am going to be Very Cranky for the rest of this post.  if you love this particular scene in the way i just mentioned, you will probably want to scroll on by, because this piece of meta most likely won’t be your jam.  as always, these are my personal thoughts and nobody is obligated to share them, so please do not hesitate to simply skip this post if we are on different wavelengths - instead, keep enjoying fandom in whatever way is most fun for you!
fair warning now given, off i go on a long, frustrated tirade.
i already wrote about the first half of this scene, where arthur decides that the appropriate thing to do at this particular moment is to give merlin a scolding about the evils of sorcery, despite the fact that the only reason arthur is even alive to deliver this lecture in the first place is because merlin’s ‘sorcerer’ best friend just DIED saving arthur’s life.  but sure, you know what, let’s use said best friend’s funeral to chastise merlin about how “dangerous” sorcerers are.  let’s just make that completely dickheaded decision.
and, moving on to the second half of this scene - here’s the thing.  hunith overhears this entire conversation.  she overhears arthur telling merlin off about sorcery, in front of the burning corpse of merlin’s best friend, who is, as far as arthur knows, the ‘sorcerer’ who died saving arthur’s life.
and yet, for some inexplicable reason, hunith still cannot get off the arthur pendragon train for two damn seconds.
she has known arthur for less than a week.  by contrast, she has known will for his entire life.  but the instant arthur walks away, hunith sidles up next to merlin and says, “you’d better be going” - like.  okay, my god, can you try to hustle him away from his best friend’s in-progress funeral any faster?????  how about we maybe give him a second?  the pyre hasn’t even burnt down yet, and merlin hasn’t had a single second to himself since this sequence started.  he’s had to stand there and listen to arthur insult the dude who everyone is supposed to be memorializing, and then hunith - who overheard the entire thing - zips right over and tries to chivvy merlin on his way.  you’d better be going.
HELLO?!  the pyre is still roaring.  how about, instead of hassling merlin and hustling him offstage, everybody just sits down and waits for a minute.  how about they all just leave merlin alone for three everloving seconds.
honestly, just - every time i think about this scene i get angrier.
i love hunith, and i know she’s well-intentioned.  but everything she gives merlin in this scene is the exact opposite of what he needs.  he doesn’t need to be hurried off the village green like there’s some reason he can’t stay there for the entirety of his friend’s funeral.  he doesn’t need to be pushed into going back to camelot when he is clearly struggling with the idea of leaving ealdor again.  and he absolutely does not need to be told how much someone else “needs” him right now, when he himself is the one who is having a fucking crisis and who needs someone to take care of him.
i cannot emphasize that last point enough.  it is just - beyond upsetting to me that hunith literally watches arthur shitting on merlin’s dead best friend (and, by proxy, merlin himself, since merlin is the actual sorcerer) and she still somehow thinks the right thing to do is walk over and start telling merlin how great arthur is and how arthur “needs” him and how merlin “belongs at arthur’s side.”
i can’t stand that.  it makes me so angry.  it’s not right.  it’s not fair.  it’s damaging.  it’s the same shitty messaging that destroys merlin’s life in later seasons, this idea that he exists for someone else’s sake, the complete disregard for what he himself might want at any given moment, for what he himself might need, for the reservations he might have about this plan that other people have formulated for his life.
he is UNCOMFORTABLE when she says these things to him!  he doesn’t look at her; he shifts his gaze to arthur and the camelot squad with this grim, unconvinced expression on his face, and then he averts his eyes from her.
everything hunith tells merlin in this scene is the exact opposite of what he needs to hear.  he does not need someone to tell him how badly his services are “needed” by a man who hates the person merlin truly is, not when the only friend who ever accepted merlin’s true self has just been killed.  he does not need to be told that arthur, who is alive solely because will is dead and who only seconds ago expressed exactly zero gratitude for that sacrifice, is the person to whom merlin owes his undying loyalty.  he does not need to be shuffled off to camelot as quickly as possible, as if it would be better for him to just rush forward and forget what happened here, as if what happened here didn’t matter.
because what happened here did matter, whether hunith and arthur find it convenient to acknowledge or not.  i have to lay this out again, because what happened to merlin in ealdor is so much more important than anybody ever seems to realize - and i do understand that, i really do (because yes, it was just one episode for us) - but we have to look at it from merlin’s perspective, not the audience’s.
will wasn’t ‘one episode’ for merlin.
i can’t say this enough times.  i cannot say this loudly enough.
merlin, at the beginning of this show, has only ever had ONE FRIEND.
most of us can’t even imagine something like that.
but try.  TRY.
merlin has only ever had one friend.  he’s only ever had one friend to love him.  he only had one friend for the first two decades of his life.  he’s only been in camelot for a couple of months; he’s only known these camelot people for a couple of months, and they don’t know his real self anyhow.  and now his ONLY FRIEND, the person he’s known all his life, the only friend he ever had who knew him for who he truly was, was just violently cut down before his very eyes, whilst saving a guy who can legally have merlin murdered for just existing.  and even though merlin and will spend the entirety of 1.10 having a painful, complicated argument, will still uses his last moments on earth to tell the biggest fucking whopper of his life, in order to shield merlin from harm, taking all of the danger and infamy and condemnation upon himself.  he dies with a lie on his lips.  he dies with merlin’s hand in his hair.
and all the while, merlin knows that this would not have happened if he had just been willing to use his magic in the first place, instead of letting his fear of discovery prompt him into allowing his neighbors to offer themselves up for the slaughter in his place.
the avalanching double-whammy of grief and guilt that merlin is suddenly slammed with at the end of this episode is almost incomprehensible in scale.
i’ve talked about this before, but again, i think it’s something we don’t generally remember: losing will is the first time merlin has ever experienced personal bereavement.  and he doesn’t get to start out with a warm-up; he goes straight to the big leagues.  this is not some trifling thing.  this is a total implosion of merlin’s world as he knows it.
when we think about the mark this episode leaves on merlin’s life, i don’t think most of us consider the magnitude of this event deeply enough.  losing will in this way is not some one-off thing that merlin just...gets over.  this is the most earth-shattering thing that has ever happened to him, at this point in time.  it is still one of the worst things that has ever happened to him, period, even years later.  the guilt never goes away.
and the thing that’s unique about this particular trauma is that merlin has to manage it alone.  there are other tragedies in his life where we witness him receiving support/comfort from others - freya, lancelot, balinor (though of course there are aspects to these miseries that merlin has to keep secret from other people, as well) - but with will, merlin has to do everything on his own.  he can’t get one single moment of peace at will’s funeral.  his own mother, the only person who knows what really happened, can’t help him without making everything about arthur.  and merlin can’t tell anyone else what happened, not the truth of it, because doing so would squander the gift he’s been given - will’s lie is still protecting him, years later, from arthur and morgana both.
merlin, at the end of 1.10, is forced to navigate this grief completely alone, in the silent secrecy of his own heart.  arthur is actively making it worse.  hunith is out here singing arthur’s praises.  and will is just like - he’s suddenly not part of the conversation anymore.  he doesn’t even register on anyone’s radar.
it truly is...incredible, for me, to watch hunith overhear arthur being legitimately terrible to both merlin and the guy who just died saving merlin AND arthur’s lives, and then to see her come over and start talking about how merlin belongs at arthur’s side, how much merlin needs to be there for him, how they’re two sides of the same coin.  meanwhile, the guy who literally just lied his life away to protect merlin’s secret and who NEVER made merlin feel like he had to hide who he was and who never had any problem with magic in the first place and never made merlin feel unsafe and never treated merlin like he was less of a human being just for existing -
- he’s just burning to ash there, and hunith doesn’t even acknowledge that, despite the fact that merlin is so visibly, intently, single-mindedly focused on that funeral pyre, and so clearly in distress and in pain and NEEDING somebody.  all she can talk about is merlin’s responsibility to arthur.
the dissonance here is baffling.  hunith has known will forever.  she met arthur less than a week ago.  she barely knows him, and what she does know is that he thinks magic-users are dangerous/evil.  she saw him being a dick to her kid.  she knows her son is having the worst day of his life.  and she still doesn’t offer a single comforting word in reference to the person who just died protecting merlin’s secret, instead choosing to wax poetic about a man whose bigotry is what merlin needed protecting from in the first place.
that...is a hot mess.  the merlin-hunith-will dynamic is one of the few things in this show that reflects less-than-stellarly on hunith’s character, however much i love her.  and even though it all stems from an overwhelming desire to keep her son safe, it doesn’t make her choices any less damaging.  she sends merlin away specifically because she finds out that will knows about his secret.  she spends 1.10 analyzing and encouraging and dissecting merlin’s relationship with arthur, when merlin’s relationship with will is the one that desperately needs attention.  she’s proven wrong about will’s trustworthiness in the most stunning, powerful way possible, and then she never even acknowledges him, instead choosing to laud the dude who literally forces merlin to live in fear of execution.
she’s merlin’s mother.  she’s the only person in his life who knows anything about what will actually meant to him.  she is his only possible resource as he tries to weather a kind of devastation that defies description.
and she, like arthur, just barrels right on ahead and makes everything about someone else.
Tumblr media
the cinematography choices in this scene matter.  whenever arthur or hunith tries to talk to merlin, the camera is placed on the opposite side of the fire from them, meaning the flames are always in the foreground of the frame.  they are something we are required to see and look past before we can get to anything else in the scene.  and in terms of directorial/acting decisions - merlin doesn’t take his eyes off the pyre until the end of his conversation with hunith.  not once while talking to arthur does he look away from it.
the funeral pyre is always in the foreground of the shot, because it’s in the forefront of merlin’s mind.  that is where his focus is right now.  that is what is taking up all of his attention.  that is what is edging into the frame, eating up our entire field of view.  that is what he needs help with.
but he doesn’t get any such support.  the entire sequence ends up revolving around arthur.  will’s entire funeral is about arthur fucking pendragon.  arthur inserts himself so he can talk to merlin about how evil magic is, and then hunith inserts herself so she can talk to merlin about how great arthur is.  nobody ever stops to think that maybe merlin doesn’t want to talk to anybody right this second.  merlin’s entire ‘farewell’ to the only true friend he ever had in his life is completely swallowed up by the prince of camelot, and if that isn’t a metaphor for the rest of merlin’s life, then i don’t know what is.
Tumblr media
i know nobody needs to hear this, because very few people are invested in this kid at the same level of embarrassing detail as me, but here it is, anyway.
yes, will is prickly.  he’s hard to get on with.  he’s angry.  he’s bitter and snappy and uncharitable, sometimes.
but you know what?  he has every reason to be like that.
this kid has nobody.  his own best friend’s mother - who has known him all his life - doesn’t trust him and doesn’t respect him.  she is too afraid for her own son’s safety to give will any credit.  she sends merlin away to camelot, the most violently anti-magic place in the world, because apparently, will knowing about merlin’s secret would be even more dangerous than uther pendragon’s genocidal reign.
think about how that would feel.  to hear something like that about yourself.  to be somebody who is already so goddamn alone in the world, and to have your only friend vanish without so much as a ‘see you later,’ and then to be made to feel, however indirectly, like this is somehow your fault, like you’re the liability, like you’re the untrustworthy element here.  as if you, somehow, are more dangerous than a king who literally pays to have sorcerers trafficked to him in cages.
will has every right to be upset, all the time.  he has every reason to be angry, and bitter, and hurt, all the time.  to be thought so poorly of - to be held in such low esteem - when he hasn’t done anything wrong, when he hasn’t ever done anything to earn that kind of mistrust - and to have that same misplaced suspicion used to justify separating him from the only person in the world who gives a damn about him - if it were me, i would be constantly on the verge of screaming, all the time.
will has always been on merlin’s side, and he has never done anything to endanger him, and in the end he gives up everything to make sure merlin can stay safe and hidden and unhunted.  he shouldn’t have needed to prove his goodness, his constancy, his worth; not when he’s already kept merlin’s secret for who knows how many years, but even after he does do so, it doesn’t even matter.  arthur acknowledges him only to disparage sorcery.  hunith passes him over completely in favor of praising arthur, with no acknowledgment of the misjudgment she made.
Tumblr media
i have said before that merlin tends to befriend people who have nobody, people who’ve been left behind by the rest of the world, people who’ve been made to feel that they aren’t worthy of love.  and will, merlin’s oldest friend, was the first of those many characters, and it is so heartbreaking to me that in this instance, the same kind of disinterested and careless attitude towards his worth that dogged him all his life is perpetuated and affirmed after his death.  ‘people are used to ignoring him,’ merlin tells arthur, and merlin is right - even when will is dead and burning, arthur only sees sorcery.  hunith, who we would expect to be more sympathetic, only sees arthur.
merlin is the only one who knows better.  merlin has always known better, and he loves will so much, but he is the only one, apparently, and honestly, after will dies?  nobody else even tries to understand.
Tumblr media
to sum up:
hunith and arthur, for all that i love them, are both way out of line at the end of this episode.
the legacy of this experience, for merlin, is that he spends the rest of his life processing this particular trauma alone.  and that is why i always, always have to keep will and ealdor in the back of my mind when i write for merlin in any capacity - because this event isn’t some simple stumbling block for him; it changes him forever.  it teaches him what he can and can’t expect from the people around him, and it solidifies how irrelevant his own needs are when viewed in comparison with arthur’s, even to people who barely even KNOW arthur; people who are supposed to put merlin first over everything.  it teaches merlin to bury his sorrow, and to wrestle with personal suffering in secret, because if things aren’t ultimately about arthur, then they aren’t important enough to be granted any significant amount of time for merlin to deal with.  merlin’s own grief, even at his best friend’s funeral, takes too long to resolve.  arthur walks away from the pyre, and it’s time for merlin to leave, too.  you’d better be going.
bottom line: i don’t care if other people think this whole ‘ooo, everybody wants merlin to be with arthur’ thing is wonderful or beautiful or dreamily romantic.  it isn’t.  it’s ugly, and it’s cruel, and it stripped merlin of his present identity and his future potential, one stolen moment at a time.

Read on Ao3 Part 1
Warnings: this chapter is fluff all the way down, folks
Pairings: platonic merlin & everybody, can be merthur if you want I don't care
Word Count: 4729
Healing isn't supposed to be easy, but maybe the others can help make it easier.
He did say he was going to be pulling Merlin into his bed to cuddle with him in the mornings.
The sunlight is a menace, Arthur’s sleep-slack brain decides one day as it slices knife-like over his eyes through a slit in the curtains. He furrows his brow and turns, nuzzling his face into his pillow and doing his very best to ignore the fact that it’s morning now which means he’ll have to get up and do things. He’s royalty, he shouldn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to.
…well, okay, maybe that’s not true.
Arthur muffles a snort into his pillow.
That should show how much Merlin’s been rubbing off on him since he came to Camelot, Arthur before Merlin would’ve huffed in that arrogant prat way—he’s not too proud to admit he has his moments—and said that he gets to decide what he wants to do, no one else. Arthur after Merlin knows that he’s his people’s servant as much as they are his. He may not have had the words to express it before Merlin but he’s always felt that way. Seeing someone so blatantly defy the status quo—and by extension, Uther—helped bring that out of him.
See? This is why he’s tired and deserves more sleep. He’s already waxing poetic about Merlin. He turns over in bed again and resolves to try and get a little more sleep.
Of course, as soon as his head hits that side of the pillow, the door opens, and in come Merlin’s footsteps.
The curtains are pulled open and Arthur winces, the light beaming onto the back of his head. Merlin putters around, probably setting up breakfast going by the smell of sausages, and then there’s a tug on his blanket.
“No,” he mumbles, holding it closer to his face, “lemme sleep.”
“You have to get up, Arthur,” comes Merlin’s amused snort, “you’ve got a meeting with Leon in a few hours.”
Arthur grumbles, refusing to open his eyes. “Then why can’t I sleep until then?”
“Because if I don’t get you up now, you won’t have enough time to wake up properly.”
“But it’s just Leon!”
“Yes, and you know he has this annoying habit of looking pristine even when he’s covered in mud.”
This is true. Arthur sighs, cracking his eyes open, and is immediately greeted by a wonderful sight.
Merlin, his Merlin, is standing in the sunlight.
It felt like a knife on Arthur’s face, but on Merlin, it looks like a cloak. A cape. Something to be worn with pride. He glows, that’s the only way to describe it. Even his eyes are shining.
How can anyone believe that Merlin isn’t magic?
…yeah, he must be really tired.
“Arthur,” Merlin calls, and only then does Arthur realize he must’ve called his name a few times, “you okay?”
Arthur nods dumbly, still grinning dopily up at Merlin. Merlin looks warm. Warm Merlin. Merlin should be warm. Warmth is good for Merlin.
Something cold ripples through his chest as he remembers how cold Merlin was the first day he let them hug him.
Merlin shouldn’t be cold.
“Arthur?” A gentle tap on his shoulder. “Are you okay?”
Arthur blinks and holds his arms out. “C’mere.”
Now it’s Merlin’s turn to blink. “What?”
“Come here,” he insists, reaching for Merlin, “just come here.”
Merlin’s face flushes an adorable red. “Arthur, I—“
“I’ll get up in a minute, I promise, but come here first.”
Merlin sighs. “Alright, you big baby.”
But Arthur can see the way he trembles with uncertainty as he sits down to take off his boots. He can see the way Merlin’s brow twitches and how he isn’t quite sure of himself as he slides under the covers.
Well. Can’t have that.
“I said come here,” Arthur murmurs, gathering Merlin into his arms, “there.”
“…’rthur?”
“There,” Arthur sighs, snuggling into his new Merlin-shaped pillow, “perfect.”
Merlin’s tunics are scratchy. He’s a bit elbows and knees. He doesn’t seem to know what to do with all his limbs.
But as Merlin’s arms shakily come up to hold Arthur back, a contented rumble comes from Arthur’s chest.
Merlin is warm.
Yeah, they’re not getting up for a few hours. Leon will understand.
2.
Merlin doesn’t like going hunting, which is fine, which is why they’ve affectionally renamed it ‘a woods trip.’ Actually, he’s pretty sure Gwaine calls it ‘get Arthur out of the castle so his prat nature doesn’t consume him,’ but everyone gets the point.
The point is that it’s one of the few times where they can just be a group of men, bit worried about getting stabbed by bandits, yes, but not worried about the rules and hierarchies and eyes of the city on them all the time. They can mess about and joke and partake in the bizarre sense of humor they all seem to have without any of the guards looking worriedly at each other when they think they won’t be seen.
Honestly, most of the guards at this point have just…accepted it. Arthur will never quite get over the one time he overheard a conversation with one of the new guards outside his room.
“Shouldn’t we tell someone that the servant is conspiring against the King?”
There had been a scoff from the older guard, Kodi. “You must be new.”
If Merlin had wondered why Arthur was muffling snorts into a napkin when he returned, he didn’t ask.
The woods aren’t exactly safe, not like Camelot is, but as Leon says, the safest place for a ship is in the harbor but ships were made to sail.
It’s what he tends to pull out whenever one of them complains about camping out for a night.
“Come on,” Gwaine mutters as he tries to get the fire to start, “come on, you bastard…”
Merlin glances over and hides a smirk. “Need a hand, Gwaine?”
“No.”
After a few seconds pass, Gwaine stifles a sigh.
“Maybe.”
Merlin stands, takes the flint and steel from him, and crouches down. He strikes it once and there’s barely a spark. He frowns. Another try yields another failure.
“What’s wrong with this thing?”
“So it’s not me. Great.”
“No, it’s—did someone leave this out?”
“Ah—“ Percival raises his hand— “that might’ve been me. One of the canteens spilled over the pack that it was in.”
“Well, yeah, that’ll explain why the—yeah, that’s it.” Merlin sighs. “Okay, well, um…”
“Can’t you just—“ Lancelot snaps his fingers— “you know?”
Merlin stiffens.
“Hey,” Gwaine murmurs softly, resting his hand on Merlin’s shoulder, “Merlin. Hey, Merlin, look at me.”
Merlin turns, his mouth a hard line.
“You have magic,” Gwaine says gently, “we know. We don’t care that it’s illegal. You’re not bad for having magic and we won’t punish you for using it.”
“…thanks.”
“Anytime.” He nods toward a scrap of kindling. “Now come on, I’m hungry.”
It gets a weak laugh out of Merlin as he stretches his hand out and mumbles something. A fire sparks into existence and roars merrily. Gwaine smiles and wraps his arms tightly around Merlin.
“Good job, Merlin,” he says quietly as Percival drops a hand onto his shoulder and rubs, “good job.”
“…really?”
“Yes.” Percival gives his shoulder a squeeze. “Good.”
3.
New rule they figured out: Merlin isn’t allowed to go near bodies of water unsupervised.
It’s the end of winter and the trees are just starting to grow their leaves out again. The grass is turning green under the lumps of snow that still remain and the birds have started to sing. All around them is the sharp sweet smell of new, the soft cracks as the ice melts.
Soft cracks, mind you. Not big ones that mean someone is about to fall through a thawing lake.
He didn’t actually fall through, but it had been a close thing.
Elyan had fretted for a good few minutes as Merlin’s teeth chattered until they figured out the poor man had just had a clump of snow fall on top of him, he hadn’t fallen through the ice into the lake. He gets a half-hearted scolding as they whip up a fire and a warm drink, quickly replaced by questions of whether he’s okay, is everything still attached to him, is he hurt?
“I’m fine,” Merlin insists, huddling by the fire, “just a bit cold.”
“You’re still shivering,” Elyan points out quietly, “give me your hands.”
“What? Why?”
“I’m going to make sure you don’t lose circulation.”
Merlin frowns but lets Elyan take his hands. The knight begins to rub his fingers in a pattern Merlin recognizes from Gaius, stimulating blood flow back into the digits to ensure that everything is working properly.
Elyan works patiently for a few seconds until he realizes that Merlin’s eyes have glazed over.
“Merlin?”
Merlin blinks and seems to snap out of whatever daze he was in. “Sorry, sorry, I just—um—“
Elyan tilts his head, Merlin’s hands still cradled in his lap as he struggles for words. Absentmindedly, he swipes a thumb over Merlin’s palm and Merlin bites back a whimper.
“Merlin, am I hurting you?”
“I mean…yes? But no, no wait, I don’t want you to stop, I just—it—“
“Shh,” Elyan says, “it’s okay. Tell me what hurts.”
“I just…you’re really warm,” Merlin mumbles, “and I guess I’m just not used to…to…to touch yet.”
“Ah, I see.” Elyan moves his hands slowly, seeing the blood flow is mostly back to normal as he cups Merlin’s hands between his own. “It’s still warmer than you’re used to, right?”
Merlin nods.
“Can I keep holding your hands?”
“Mhm.”
Elyan holds Merlin’s hands in his own until they deem it safe for him to ride back to Camelot.
4.
If Lancelot knows the secret to getting Merlin to feel a little more comfortable in his own skin, it’s to have him hold something.
He’s not sure why it takes Merlin’s mind down an edge as he begins to fiddle with whatever’s in his hands, but it does. The worried furrow in his brow softens into one of concentration, the anxious twitches of his fingers grow more fluid, more relaxed as he twists and turns the thing between them. Over the years, he’s gotten good at figuring out what Merlin needs to be holding, if he does say so himself.
When Arthur has an important meeting that makes Merlin’s eyes dart around the room, Lancelot hands him a shirt that needs to be repaired. Merlin’s hands navigate the stitches with ease as he makes sure Arthur’s got his armor of a different sort.
When there’s a tournament full of knights coming from far away that Merlin can’t trust quite yet, Lancelot hands him a pouch of seeds to sort, collected from one of the children from the flower store. Merlin sorts them deftly, putting each group into a little envelope to be returned, using it to hone his eye.
When there’s a terrible thunderstorm and Merlin can’t sleep, when Lancelot finds him wandering the castle late at night, he gives him a little plush toy. It’s a small thing, stitched together from remnants of clothing, and something that the servants pretend doesn’t exist. But if you know where to look, and who to talk to, there will be a little stuffed toy sitting on your nightstand if you ever need something to hold. Malwen raises an eyebrow when he asks for one but once she knows it’s for Merlin, Lancelot has it before the day is out.
As he watches Merlin fiddle with the toy, twirling one of the buttons around and round its thread, he wonders.
Is this the only form of physical comfort Merlin has ever allowed himself to have?
The answer is an incredibly disheartening yes, and Lancelot resolves to always give Merlin what he needs to help himself.
Then there’s a moment where Lancelot has no idea what Merlin would want to hold.
It’s a visiting lord, because it’s always a visiting lord when it’s not bandits or a visiting knight. They storm inside—Lancelot hadn’t bothered to remember his name—and pronounced that he missed Uther’s way of doing things. That when Uther was in charge, Camelot was strong, that there were roots of evil snuffed out at every turn.
Of course, he was quickly glared into submission by Percival and Arthur had cooly informed him that evil was snuffed out by not giving it an environment to grow, not futility ripping weeds from the soil.
But not in time to stop the lord’s words from getting to Merlin.
Lancelot finds Merlin on the balcony that isn’t a balcony, an abandoned training ground far above the rest of the city. He sits on the old stone, swinging his legs back and forth, staring at the ground with a glazed expression. His hands twist and turn over each other and his breathing is a little too controlled to be safe.
“Merlin,” he calls softly, not wanting to startle him, “Merlin, can I come sit with you?”
“Mm.”
“Thank you.” Lancelot eases himself down onto the stone bench, speaking softly as if he’s trying to soothe a wild animal. “Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Merlin isn’t hurt, good. Lancelot glances down at his hands. They twitch and knead at the fabric of his tunic. They clench into fists only to open a few seconds later. They look like they hurt.
They’re trembling.
Lancelot takes a deep breath and carefully, oh, so carefully, takes one of them in his.
Merlin goes limp, all but slumping into his shoulder. His hands are so cold.
“I’m right here, Merlin,” Lancelot murmurs, giving the hand in his a squeeze, “I’m right here.”
Slowly, he reaches out to take the other, feeling Merlin’s hands twitch lazily in his. Every so often, Merlin will squeeze and he will squeeze back. Merlin’s head tucks itself under his chin and the warm rush of his breath hits Lancelot’s arm. His hands stay safely in Lancelot’s grip.
Lancelot will always give Merlin something to hold. It’s no accident that includes his own hands.
5.
Not many people in Camelot know that Leon isn’t just Arthur’s right hand, but the closest thing Arthur had to a brother.
They grew up together, in the streets and fields and halls of Camelot, running around with sticks before they got given swords, fighting dragons and monsters before they battled the real ones, helping each other in secret before they rose to places where no one could hurt them.
Leon remembers holding an Arthur too young for any of this as his father raged, as the swords clashed too close to his face, as a peaceful village burned around them. He remembers a younger Arthur holding onto his cloak, his sleeve, his hand, always asking, asking, asking Leon to be there, just to be there, the way he didn’t feel anyone else was.
They’re older now, and now Arthur is a man Leon is proud to know. He asks Arthur for things now, for help dismantling the things they hated as children, for help finding ways to take care of the knights when he doesn’t know what to do, for help figuring out what to do in this world where things are starting to make less and less sense day by day.
Arthur is his brother, his friend, and his King. Leon is Arthur’s brother, his friend, and his Knight.
To most others, Leon is nigh untouchable. He is the longest-serving knight in Camelot, he is almost royalty with how close he is to the Pendragon family, and he is near unmatched on the dueling grounds. He has the ear of the King, the unwavering loyalty of the knights, and the faith of the Council.
There is a short list of the few who know he this is not all he is.
There are a few children in the lower town who know he is a kind man before he is a great knight, that there are scrapes and bruises they receive running from something only to be protected by a red cloak and a calm voice. There are a few servants who know that his presence as they walk to Gaius is an impenetrable shield on one side and the softest guiding hand on the other. There are a few stable boys who know that they will never again be beaten for who they are because he is just like them.
But Leon has not truly cared for someone younger than him since Arthur was little. Not the way he used to.
Of course, as he is with most things, Merlin is the exception to this rule.
Merlin, with all his magic and baffling charm and bumbling wisdom, worms his way into Leon’s heart by the time he gets assigned to be Prince Arthur’s Manservant. From there, it isn’t hard for Leon to watch with a certain glow of pride in his chest as Arthur starts to change, from the hardened fist Uther wanted him to be to the man the little boy he grew up with was supposed to be. He keeps his words to himself about how kind Merlin is, relentlessly so, and smiles quietly when Arthur begins to clumsily mimic the acts of kindness. He grows to care for Merlin quickly, making room next to his heart for one more, nestled close.
But it isn’t until he has a chance to comfort Merlin properly that he begins to think of him as a brother.
Don’t get him wrong, Merlin is his brother the same way the knights are his brothers. But Leon hasn’t loved someone the way he loves Arthur in a long time.
He receives a call from Gaius and responds, hurrying down to the physician’s chambers to see Merlin’s face is awfully flushed and his eyes red-rimmed in tears. He hurries faster to Merlin’s side, asking what’s happened, what’s wrong?
It seems Merlin has been fixing something wrong with the magic of this bracelet Gaius shows him, a silver one with a big amber stone in the middle. It looks familiar, it reminds Leon of Morgana for some strange reason, but he can’t quite place it. But it seems something went wrong and now…now poor Merlin is upset.
Leon knows what to do.
He guides Merlin carefully into his room, stopping to remove his mail shirt and leaving him in the softer under-tunic and cloak, and sitting Merlin carefully down on the bed. The poor man looks cold, small, like a scared dog.
“Merlin,” he says softly, “Merlin, I’m going to sit next to you now.”
He eases his weight down onto the bed and waits. Waits for another tear to roll down Merlin’s cheek to let out a soft noise of concern, melting at the sight of someone crying.
“Come,” he murmurs, opening his arms, “shed your tears, Merlin.”
And oh, he hasn’t seen those eyes for a very long time. Not since little Arthur had looked up at him, shining with undisguised hope and want but holding himself back, like a starved puppy too scared to eat. It breaks his heart and he lets out another low noise, reaching for Merlin.
“When Arthur was little,” he murmurs, his voice low and soothing as he begins to gather Merlin into his lap, “he never used to like sleeping alone when his father was away. He said the castle was too big, too empty, even with all the people inside.”
He takes Merlin’s hands and guides them around his neck.
“I never liked sleeping in the castle either, it was too quiet. I didn’t know where anything was, except for Arthur. One night, he came into my chambers and all but tackled me in a hug.” He smiles fondly at the memory. “He insisted I let him stay.”
“St-stay?”
“Yes, Merlin, stay. Stay with me, let me hold him until we both fell asleep. He pulled himself into my lap—yes, just like this, your legs over mine—and wrapped his arms around my neck—there you go, just here, that’s it, you hold onto me now—and we stayed like that until we fell asleep.”
Merlin’s hair ruffles as he settles, Leon’s breath warming the top of Merlin’s head as he tucks the poor man close. Merlin’s hands are ice around his neck.
“And when the nights got cold, we would wrap ourselves up in the blankets,” he continues, beginning to swaddle them both in his cloak, “until we were bundled so tightly together that even the coldest night wouldn’t get it. It was warm, I remember being warm, there, in the bed, in the blankets, safe…and warm…”
There’s a quiet sigh against his neck as he wraps the cloak around the both of them. It’s warm, a perfect little nest. Merlin’s weight settles against his chest and part of him that’s been suppressed for many, many years starts to warm.
“He stopped coming to me when he got older,” he murmurs, “whether because he didn’t need it anymore or if he got too big. Between you and me, I’m sure it’s the second one. He’d still try if he weren’t worried about hurting me. I think he misses it, sometimes.”
He pauses, then leans closer and tucks his face against Merlin’s temple.
“I know I did. I still do, every now and then, but I know Arthur feels safe now in a way he never did when we were growing up. And most of that is thanks to you.”
“M-me?”
“Yes, Merlin,” Leon whispers, “you. You make him feel safe, make the rest of us feel safe. You’re a good person, Merlin, and we care very deeply about you.”
“…you do?”
He can hear the sleep coloring Merlin’s voice. He hushes the poor thing, cuddles him close, rocks the both of them closer to slumber.
“Of course we do,” he whispers to his brother, “of course we do.”
+1.
Sometimes Merlin has good days. Days where he’s smiling and laughing and joking with the knights. Days where he’s bantering back and forth with Arthur like it’s nothing. Days where he uses his magic the way he always has, like it’s a part of him.
Sometimes Merlin has bad days. Days where he’s quiet and they can’t get him to smile. Days where he is every bit the perfect servant for Arthur, which means he’s about as far from Merlin as he could be. Days where he seems to want to pretend he’s never had magic in his life.
Today is a bad day.
Merlin doesn’t talk until one of them asks. He goes off on his chores and they don’t see him for hours. Gaius is worried. Leon is worried. Lancelot is worried.
Percival is angry. Some of the new knights believe Merlin is a traitor—for whatever reason—and spends time educating them on the training fields.
Elyan is afraid. Gwen came to him and said that she hasn’t seen Merlin all day, which means Merlin is avoiding the servants as well as the knights.
Gwaine is upset. Because he can’t find Merlin anywhere and the longer he stays away the worse he’s going to be when he comes back.
Arthur walks into his chambers at the end of the day and sees Merlin sitting on his bed.
He stuffs away the outrage at himself for not thinking to look here first, stuffs away the fear and sadness that Merlin is upset, stuffs away the need to order him to Gaius and have him looked over, and replaces it with a soft call of: “Merlin?”
“Sire.”
Oh, no.
“Hello, Merlin,” Arthur says softly, “can I come over to you?”
“If you like, sire.”
“I would.” Arthur crosses the room slowly, wary of Merlin’s reaction, until he can stop within arms’ reach. “Hello.”
“Hello.” Merlin looks up at him. “May I ask you for a favor, sire?”
“Of course, Merlin, anything you like.”
“…m-may I have a hug, please?”
Arthur’s heart shatters.
His face must do the wrong thing because Merlin flinches, withdrawing into himself. “I’m sorry, sire, that was rude of me to ask. I’ll leave you be, now.”
“No, no, no, Merlin,” Arthur stammers, “no, that’s not what I meant, stay, stay, Merlin, of course you can have a hug, come here, come here—“
He gathers Merlin into his arms, to his chest, wrapping him up as snugly as he can.
“You don’t need permission for a hug, Merlin, that’s why I was upset,” he mumbles, “I don’t want you to think you have to earn it, you don’t—“
It seems his ramblings, however embarrassing to him, are helping Merlin calm down. Or at least get over his fear enough to wrap his arms around Arthur too. Arthur squeezes him tight and is content to sit there for a moment to let Merlin have what he wants, but then he feels something tug at his chest.
Tug, tug, tug.
Arthur frowns, tries to tug back, only for the tugging to grow more insistent. He follows the tugging to scoop Merlin into his arms, carry him to the bed, and lie down beside him. As the tugging persists, he tucks Merlin’s head under his chin and pulls him closer, threading a leg through his. One last tug and oh, oh, he understands now.
“You’re not bad,” he murmurs, ruffling Merlin’s hair as he talks, “you’re not evil. You have magic, Merlin, that’s alright. You’re my Merlin. I don’t want a proper servant, I don’t want a normal servant, I want you. You’re my Merlin.”
There.
Whatever wall there is crumbles as Merlin begins to sob desperately into his chest. The tugging renews, guiding him this way, that way, to hold Merlin close, to pull back and let him gasp for breath, to murmur reassurances in his ear, or to roll a little and hold Merlin down as he seizes with the force of the cries.
And through it all, Merlin never stops asking for comfort.
His fingers never loosen their grip on Arthur’s shirt. His legs never let go of the one Arthur wraps through his. His nose never strays far from the crook of Arthur’s neck. He never stops pushing himself into Arthur’s chest, almost as if he’s trying to climb inside and make a home for himself there.
He already has one.
Arthur realizes the wordless asks and answers, holding him as tight as he wants, listening to the tugs in his chest to take care of his Merlin properly, never stops murmuring that yes, this is good, this is alright, Merlin can have whatever he wants, Arthur’s here, he’s here, he’ll take care of Merlin.
He’ll be here. He’ll always be right here.
After, Arthur will ask him softly about the tugs, and Merlin will blush and realize that his magic was asking for help when he couldn’t. Arthur will smile and ruffle his hair and tease him about his magic liking Arthur better than him. The smile will soften when Merlin shakily admits he’s thought the same thing.
After, Merlin will start asking for touch more. He’ll brush his hand against Lancelot’s, sit a little closer to Gwaine or Percival, start accompanying Elyan on his daily walks, or find himself reaching for Leon’s cloak only for Leon to bundle his hand in his and keep it safe.
After, Merlin will slide into bed the moment Arthur opens his arms, letting them both sleep in a little more and enjoy the feeling of warm, warm, warm.
But right now, Merlin is crying in Arthur’s arms and Arthur isn’t going anywhere.
He’ll always be right here.

HEY AMY!!! i hope you had a lovely day today🥺thank you for the ask💞
🥺- for my mutuals, ill talk about why i follow you and why everyone should be as well
omg im pretty sure i met and started following you like the day of that bellamy scene™️ because i remember thinking how fucking horrendous that episode ended, and, at the same time, how amazing that night on tumblr was aksnakaaj. so that night, tumblr was a fucking disaster and chaotic and funny asf. i remember texting @tkstrrand the entire ep (bc she couldn’t watch it for some reason) like how boring it was/how she wasn’t missing much blahblah and then when the death scene happened at the last fucking second, i sent her about a thousand separate incoherent texts in the span of like two minutes LOL tumblr was in shambles and i made a few posts about how fucking dumb the show was—one post i made i told my few new followers to fuck the 100 and just watch merlin and you texted me about it!! we have literally so much in common (with merlin, atla, the 100, tog!!!) that when you texted me about how you felt about that scene compared to merlin’s ending, my thought was like “this blog is so kind and we feel the same way and i need to follow asap.”
you are literally so sweet and lovely to talk to🥺that night™️ may had been disastrous, but i can look on it with a lighter heart because we met because of it!! every time we talk i always smile so much (and dw, i know i still have to get clone wars for our boy anakin👀👀)
dude, everyone should be following you because your blog is incredible, your tags are superb, and you are literally one of the sweetest people i’ve met on here😭💞 i adore you.
👀 - and ill tell you a parallel from merlin or the 100 that still fucks me up
this post for merthur still FUCKS ME UP by @camelotsheart
THE EYES. THE GIFSET’S BEAUTIFUL COLORING. THE EYES. EYES. I CANT. THIS GIFSET HAUNTS ME. parallels, man, i fucking love them.
☕️ + send me a ship/character/movie/book and ill give you my opinions on it
my opinions on morgwen:
I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I SHIP IT WITH MY WHOLE ASS SOUL. dude, their potential as a ship is incredible😭i fucking love them together. i wrote them as a side pairing in my first multi-chapter merthur fic and i adored writing their interactions and dynamic sm. if morgana was going to be with anyone, my first choice will always be gwen. i also read them as a pairing in fics all the time because the pure power-couple potential is insane.
hot ☕️ here™️: i think if someone was to bring morgana back from the brink of hatred, it should have been gwen (not merlin). so, like, i could definitely see merlin telling her about his magic and whatnot and maybe that would have stopped her from going dark side...but...i didn’t think merlin should have (ekk probably an unpopular opinion).
see, i love merlin with my entire heart..and tbh telling uther fucking pendragon’s ward that he had magic was just too much of a gamble—especially with arthur’s life on the line, which literally became merlin’s sole purpose in life (another matter for a different essay™️). i understand his need to keep it a secret from her even more when the large reptile repeatedly got into merlin’s head that she was bad news from the jump (also another matter for a different essay™️).
SO. that leaves two options for our miserable magical gal: arthur or gwen. now, i honestly believe arthur wouldn’t have hurt her if he was told. and i even think he may have became more sympathetic to the magical community because of it—especially when he saved mordred wayyyy early on that cemented the fact that arthur was not uther. but i can also understand why morgana wouldn’t tell arthur, and it’s pretty much the same reason merlin didn’t tell her about his magic: the risk was too big and she didn’t want to gamble her life with an unknown reaction.
now we get to the main point: gwen would have been the best option for her. whether it is platonic or not, gwen was always there for morgana. gwen is such a kind, loving soul, and she deeply respected and adored morgana—you can tell by the way she smiled around her in the beginning seasons, how she would get her flowers, how she would worry about morgana’s wellbeing. even though gwen was morgana’s servant, she cared for her in more ways than were required and it showed. they were best friends. the entire incident with gwen’s father, which was horrendous, might be the reason gwen would be rightfully upset about the subject of magic; however. she knew her father wasn’t magical, she knew uther was a tyrant, and she knew morgana’s heart. someone is gonna tell me that if morgana had explained to gwen what happened, how her magic was innate, how morgana would never fucking choose to have magic anywhere near her shithead guardian (who probably would have killed her imo if he knew bc you know the whole “fire will purify” bullshit), that gwen would hate her??? I MEAN LITERALLY WATCH THE LAST EPISODES AGAIN. when QUEEN GWEN realizes that the whole time it was merlin saving everyone’s asses, and she connected all the dots, her face showed nothing but pure understanding and acceptance.
gwen was such an underused character. her fucking potential arcs could have been phenomenal (again, LOL, another matter for a different essay™️), and the way canon made morgana use gwen was fucking gross and im not a fan🙃 but fuck canon. i ship them and i love them to pieces ✌🏻thank you for coming to my talk✌🏻
my opinions on manon mf blackbeak:
oh boy, where do i start? i would die for her...is that too extreme for the starting place? i fucking LOVE manon blackbeak dude. oh my god, so, remember when her and aelin fought for the first time in QoS? i remember jumping up from my lounging position with my hand over my smiling mouth because i love both of these badass hardcore women with everything i am. i mean, aelin owns my ass (she is probably my favorite character of all time rn) but manon hits differently. her storyline at the beginning was so bleh, but, man, did it escalate fast to “holy shit” to “i fucking love her” to “oh fuck im sobbing.”
the only thing i will complain about with her character in canon was the fact that my girl was straight???? excuse me?? she has been alive for fucking forever and she is straight? no. i cant accept that. tbh i ship manon and elide🥺 (i also ship dorain and chaol oops). but her character development was everything and i cant think too long on what happens because i will start crying tbh sksjsmakks
okay wow im so sorry for, uh, spilling every thought i had into this. it legit took me like a day to respond 😔
i appreciate you so much. thank you🥺💞

Oooooooo Merlin/Arthur
Coffee shop AU: Who is the barista, and who frequents the coffee shop? This is easy: Merlin is the barista - unless Morgana dared Arthur!
Highschool/College AU: Who is the straight-A student, and who’s the backrow slacker? This one is harder to choose - I like both straight A student Merlin and backrow slacker jock Arthur and straight A student Arthur because his father wouldn’t accept anything else and backrow slacker because too distracted by magic Merlin!
Rivals to loves AU: Who takes their rivalry seriously, and who is half in it just to push the other’s buttons? How about a Merlin, who actually thinks they are rivals when Arthur is just flirting really, really badly?
Enemies to lovers AU: Which one switches sides? Arthur!!!
Soulmate AU: Who is eager to meet their soulmate? Who absolutely does not want to meet their soulmate? That one depends on whether Kilgharrah exists in this AU: if he does, then he’s probably annoyingly vague enough that Merlin expects the worst and never wants to meet his soulmate! Though really, in any AU both could be very sceptical because of their respective parents, Arthur because his parents were soulmates and his father never got over the death of his mother, and Merlin because his parents were soulmates and his father still left him and his mom.
Single parent AU: Which one is the single parent? (Alt. if they’re both single parents: Which one is open to starting a new relationship from the start? Which one is never planning on finding love again… Until they meet the other and are instantly smitten?) Arthur is the single parent and Merlin is either the kid’s irreverent tutor, OR the neighbour with the cutest dog in the street who Arthur doesn’t realise is their neighbour and instead thinks he’s a homeless person begging on their street when he’s really in the last throes of his thesis and his dog has stolen the memory stick!
Doctor AU: Which one is the longsuffering doctor? Which one is the patient? If it’s to be a longsuffering doctor, then that’s definitely Merlin! Arthur is the bad patient who has no patience at all, and thinks he should be able to leave the hospital like, yesterday!
Bodyguard AU: Who is the bodyguard? Who are they protecting? Which one is secretly pining for the other? Oohhh, I don’t think I’ve actually ever read a Merthur Bodyguard AU! Are there any? Gimme the recs, please! Anyway, I think... Merlin being the magical bodyguard to Arthur’s prince is very nice obviously, but also practically canon, so to get some AU flavour in there I’m going to go with magical big name Merlin who needs a non magic bodyguard for REASONS, cue Arthur! And the pining obviously happens on both sides!
Pirate AU: Who is the pirate? Who is the member of the royal family who did not sign up for this? I’m always here for more royal!Merlin, so I think dashing pirate Arthur who accidentally kidnaps prince!Merlin and decides to make the best of the situation (in every way)!
Childhood best friends AU: Which one was super obviously in love with the other the whole time? Who was oblivious until they were older? Arthur was painfully obvious, Morgana almost died of second hand embarrassment and still Merlin didn’t notice a thing! (Probably because he was equally as obvious, Gwen can definitely commiserate when it comes to the second hand embarrassment)
Thank you, Clara!
Send me more ships!

i couldn’t tell you why, but i was thinking about merlin in the shower this evening and some of my main Problems with it. warning, under the cut is me ranting about the stuff i don’t like about merlin, which i haven’t watched in three and a half years so i might not be right on the details. warning for salt and foggy memories of a show i haven’t seen in three and a half years
when thinking about merlin, the main problems that come to my mind are
the rapid speed of morgana’s character “arc”. one moment she’s season one morgana, passionate, caring woman fighting for the rights of those around her then BOOM she’s Evil. i don’t remember there being much of a progression
parts of it are really confusing and muddled (might just be that my memory is getting bad because it’s been so long but i remember a lot of the plots jumping around kind of nonsensically)
the tone problem. the first season has a bright, fun, happy tone which WORKS for the subject matter but as the seasons progress, that tone becomes less beneficial.
the black and white morality. the narrative cuts uther pendragon breaks left and right as he slaughters people for practicing magic and for only having the ability to, then cuts arthur breaks for being an asshole, going along with his father’s way then outright perpetrating it himself because he’s Arthur and he’s ultimately a Good Guy and the Once and Future King so it’s cool he can do whateves he wants. merlin grows darker and darker in his pursuit of protecting arthur and the narrative excuses it every time because he is the protag and is doing it for the Greater Good. morgana, meanwhile, is turned into a heartless, crazy villain while she should have remained a sympathetic one.
the thing that i feel the show failed at most was making merlin and morgana proper foils. morgana wants to bring about change, no matter the cost and no matter the risk. she’s the armed revolutionary with an understandable and righteous motive. the narrative could have shown her going too far in pursuit of these goals and maybe losing sight of where the line is and of her former friends, but it would have been stronger if she remained a sympathetic figure fighting for her cause. merlin, by contrast, is... i don’t know what the right word for it is. maybe the apologist? the race traitor maybe? merlin has lost sight of the plight of both his people and himself in his pursuit of making arthur king and keeping arthur safe (arthur, arthur, arthur), whether this is because he believes arthur will save the world or because he just loves arthur is up for debate, but the show always frames merlin’s viewpoint as Just. supporting arthur wholeheartedly is what needed to be done. if it would have allowed merlin to be the HELLA gray character that he was by the end of it and embrace that moral ambiguity between him and morgana then we would have gotten this amazingly ambiguous conflict. both sides are arguing that the ends justify the means, they’re just trying to achieve different ends through DIFFERENT means (both of them wrong for different reasons, one trying to shatter the status quo and the other trying to preserve it wholesale). and with heroes and villains that look that similar you could get into some really interesting talks about human nature and conflict and oeaprjadfdasf it could have been great
the themes, like the tone, were all over the place.
a lot of the narrative wasn’t cohesive, but i’m trying to cut it slack for being a tv show and how tv shows don’t always know how long they have to tell a story and have to make do. they did, however, build a mythos that felt too big and felt as though it collapsed in on itself. i can’t tell if this was because they thought they were going to get more seasons or if they just pulled a moffat and couldn’t fulfill on the promises of the narrative.
i feel like gwen’s character had a lot of missed opportunities and was very angry about how much of s5 was spent with her having literally no agency. i also didn’t think that she and arthur really clicked but that might have been the merthur glasses. i’m not exactly gonna deny that i shipped that a lot and still do
