Wine Tasting for Beginners
Wine is an incredibly popular adult beverage, and it’s easy to see why. The alcohol, texture, and flavor profiles vary widely, so there is a wine out there for almost anyone. With all this variation, it drives me crazy that there are people out there who turn away from a specific varietal because of preconceived notions, OR WORSE only drink ONE specific style of wine or varietal.
Y’all. There are over 1,300 different grape varietals used in commercial wine making… probably closer to 10,000 when you really get down to it. And you’re only going to drink syrah from California? What about syrah from the Northern Rhone, Australia, Spain, Italy, South America, and South Africa? You’re not even going to try cabernet sauvignon, grenache, mourvedre, etc. ?
I won’t go overboard on wine theory with you, but as a reader of this blog, being open to trying new things is probably your M.O. Perhaps you’ve been in a tasting room and tried a cabernet that was G-R-O-S-S and now refuse to revisit the grape. I’ll be the first to say that it might not be the grape’s fault. A lot goes on in a winery… or maybe it is the grape’s fault, but not from a DNA standpoint. Perhaps the vigneron left the grapes on the vine for too long, or not long enough. Or there was mildew. pests. rain. drought. The possibilities are endless.
The purpose of this article is to help the reader assess the wine. Instead of tasting the wine and going “no, I don’t like that”, you might say “there’s not enough acidity in the wine” or “I don’t really like this flavor profile”. It is important to have a basic understanding of the main grapes, but it isn’t totally necessary. What is necessary is a discerning palate, and the desire to try something new.
Up until recently, my career was in the wine industry. I’ve worked in wineries, tasting rooms, wine bars, 4 and 5 star restaurants, etc. and I’m here to tell you that not all Champagne is good, and not all wines from the Central Coast of California are bad! Wine, however, is subjective—a critic’s opinion, or even your best friend’s opinion may not line up with yours.
To decide what you like, it’s important to learn the basics of what to look for and assess. One could drink and enjoy the same wine for years, but what happens if someone asks them to describe the wine? What would they say? “It’s really good, and very well-balanced” Are we talking about wine, or a circus elephant on a beach ball? It’s important to be descriptive, because that allows us to compare wines. If you say you hate pinot noir, but then have a blanc de noirs Champagne, you don’t really hate pinot noir, so it’s important to get to the root of the thing.
It’s easy, once you become more knowledgeable to jump into nuances like vintages, blends, and climate, but we’ll stick with the basics for now. Starting off, what do you smell in the wine? It’s important to compartmentalize what you’re smelling, or you could miss something. Sure, you smell the ripe cherries, but did you also catch that whiff of roses, black pepper, and button mushrooms? The best way to do this is to look for things in categories.
First—Fruits. This should be easiest as most people either eat fruit, or are familiar with their flavors and aromas. It’s important to think in terms of color, too (though some rules are made to be broken). You probably won't find red cherries in a white wine… but you might find white cherries. In white wine, keep a lookout for:
citrus fruit, like oranges, lemons, and limes
tree/stone fruit, like apples, pears, and peaches
Tropical fruit, like mango, papaya, guava, and passionfruit
Melon, like watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe
Red wine is a bit simpler. Reds are typically categorized into red, black, and blue fruits. This could be cherries, blackcurrants, and blueberries. Boom. Though of course, even within these categories, there are distinctions. Cherries do not taste like raspberries, and ripe cherries taste different from baked cherries. Fruit condition is certainly a factor.
Nonfruits
This list is more expansive than you’d think. It’s important to think in categories of floral, herbal, vegetal, spice, earth/minerality, and fermentation aromas. The first few are pretty self-explanatory, it’s easy to prattle on about violets, rosemary, asparagus, or white pepper, but where do you go after that? Earth can be things like truffles, mushrooms, forest floor, potting soil, etc. Minerality, or inorganic earth, would be things like chalk, slate, gravel, wet rock, and so on. Fermentation aromas would be a little easier to get after understanding what happens in a winery, but we can start with oak barrels. Oak can impart notes of vanilla, cedar, dill, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc), coconut, caramel, and maple. It may also diminish the pure fruit tones in the wine. Perhaps you’ve had a wine that has too much vanilla in it—it is certainly not the grape, but the wine producer who probably tried covering up poorly made wine with too much time in new oak.
The Palate
The first thing would be to go through fruits and nonfruits once again, as humans can also detect aromas retronasally, or, at the back of your mouth. This way, you may catch an aroma you might have missed. The primary purpose of tasting with your palate, however, is to identify the structure of the wine. We do this by utilizing taste, which is sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. The primary tastes used in assessing wine would be sweet, sour, and bitter.
Sweetness is probably the easiest to assess. That taste receptor can be found on the tip of your tongue. It’s important to note for wine beginners that “fruity” does not translate to “sweet” with wine. You can find aromas of juicy cherries in a pinot noir, while the wine itself is dry. It’s like smelling perfume—the perfume can smell sweet, but you still wouldn’t drink it. In conclusion, if you’re looking for a sweet wine, say sweet, not fruity.
Sweetness is also an indicator of the weight, or body of a wine; this is why dry pinot grigio is very light, and the richly sweet Sauternes has a syrupy texture.
Next would be sour. For wine, this refers to acidity. Acidity can be found on the sides of your tongue, running parallel like train tracks. Because of this, people often refer to acidity as the backbone or framework in wine, and it is very important. Acidity is a natural preservative in wine, so it is a good indicator as to whether or not you can lay your wine down for aging. Additionally, a lack of acidity in wine can make it feel as though it’s lacking structure, or “flabby.”
Bitterness, or tannin, is the gritty texture found in red wine; this is occasionally also found in white wine, but is referred to as “phenolic bitterness” as tannin comes from the maceration process with the red grape skins. Bitterness sounds really unappetizing, but can be found in dark chocolate, tea, and coffee. Like acidity, tannin is a structural element to wine but also acts as a preservative to wine that is being aged.
Up next is alcohol. Alcohol is also used to determine weight and body. Try to think about the difference in weight between a 9% ABV German riesling, and an 18% ABV Tawny Port. Too much alcohol in the wine may overpower all the other flavors, and cause that "hot" sensation. This is what people refer to when they say a wine is "out of balance." If there is any specific structural element that stands out in a bad way, it can negatively affect one's impression of the wine.
That's it! Going through this mental checklist in your mind will help you get to the root of why you like or dislike a particular wine, or a certain category of wine.
One thing to keep in mind with wines is that they can have faults. A certain bacteria could have made its way in, it might not have been stored properly, etc. Keep your nose open for wet newspaper/cardboard, nail polish remover, barnyard (in overwhelming quantities), or a matchstick, just to name a few.
Side note: this is what servers and sommeliers are having you look for when you sample the wine... not whether or not you like the wine.
A lot of people look to critics or publications for points and opinions, but I would encourage you to taste and think for yourself. Wine is very subjective. Though certainly, articles might still help provide educational context and a basic understanding of what the wine might taste like.
If you do decide to follow a critic, make sure their opinions align with yours. If don't you like juicy red, overripe fruit with elevated amounts of alcohol, maybe don't follow Robert Parker. If you're trying to find more niched wines that aren't mass-produced, I wouldn't subscribe to Wine Enthusiast.

Homebrew Your Own Hard Seltzer With These Essential Tips

Whether you love ‘em or you hate ‘em, one thing is true: When the weather creeps above 90 degrees, a hard seltzer is more refreshing than even the most sessionable IPA.
The brew day for a seltzer is deceivingly simple: Its only requirements are boiling a sugar syrup and preparing a neutral yeast strain to pitch. But getting a sparkling-clear, fully attenuated seltzer requires meticulous attention to detail, and as much effort as the most complicated homebrew recipes.
Four areas where hard seltzer brewing departs most from beer brewing are yeast management, clarifying, carbonation, and flavoring.
Feed the Yeast
Malt-based wort provides a nutrient and sugar-rich environment in which yeast fulfill their life’s purpose: fermentation. When making hard seltzer, the absence of malt means no nutrients are present (especially free amino nitrogen referred to as “FAN”) to help yeast strengthen their cell walls and prepare for the process of converting sugar to CO2 and alcohol. Without certain compounds, yeast won’t ferment at all; without others, they’ll perform a slow, and stinky, fermentation with lots of sulfur aromas.
The best move is adding yeast nutrient three to five times during seltzer fermentation, depending on the level of yeast activity. For a five-gallon batch, add four grams of nutrient when yeast is first pitched; a second addition 48 hours later; and a third after 72 hours. Monitor fermentation activity; when bubbling in the airlock slows, add more nutrient until you’ve arrived at a final gravity of 1.000. This is a much higher dose than typically used in homebrewing — that is because these nutrient additions are providing all the FAN and vitamins yeast need, instead of only supplementing the levels in (malt-based) wort.
Fight Sulfuric Off-Flavors
When selecting a yeast nutrient, be sure that the ingredients include diammonium phosphate. Diammonium phosphate provides FAN and specifically combats the creation of sulfuric off-flavors that are common when fermenting seltzer.
The other way to fight sulfur aromas in the final seltzer is to keep the fermentation as vigorous as possible. Bubbles of CO2 escaping from the fermenting syrup carry highly volatile sulfur compounds to the surface, and out of the seltzer. If the bubbles aren’t rising fast or often enough, sulfur compounds can remain stuck in the seltzer. Make sure to use yeast nutrient and even a second pitch of yeast if bubbles slow too much.
Be patient! It can take up to three weeks to complete fermentation on a seltzer because the yeast are in a hostile and nutrient-poor environment.
How to Get it Seltzer-Clear
One aspect of alcoholic seltzer that enhances how refreshing and thirst quenching it feels is its sparkling clarity. On a professional scale, this would be achieved by running the seltzer through a very fine filter. When brewing seltzer at home, there are a few things to do that help achieve that pure water appearance without expensive equipment.
Cooling
Once fermentation is complete (the gravity of the seltzer is 1.000 or less) cold crash the fermenter. This can mean putting the fermenter in a refrigerator, moving it to a garage or other uninsulated area when the weather is cold, or any other available means to cool the fermenter quickly. Ideally the temperature would get down to 40 degrees, or even lower, without freezing any of the water in the seltzer. This cooling slows yeast activity and causes the cells to drop out of solution, flocculating to the bottom of the fermenter.
Fining
After being held at a cooler temperature for about three days, the seltzer is ready for fining. Using a fining agent like gelatin or isinglass at the end of fermentation is one of the steps to getting the seltzer crystal clear. When hydrated gelatin is added to the seltzer, it pulls particulate and yeast out of solution as it solidifies on the bottom of the fermenter. The correct ratio for clarifying is 1.2 grams of unflavored food-grade gelatin per gallon of seltzer.
Capture the Fizz: Force Carbonation
The hard seltzers on the market get their signature fizz from force carbonation. Kegging and force carbonating are also your best bet with hard seltzer made at home. Yeast already struggle to ferment the stuff, so hoping yeast can re-ferment in the bottle and naturally create that high level of carbonation (a process known as bottle conditioning) is likely to end in disappointment.
Transferring the seltzer off the gelatin and yeast cake at the bottom of the fermenter to a keg and force carbonating it to 2.9-3.1 volumes of CO2 will give you the most authentic, Claw-like, if you will, experience. The Brewers Association has a handy chart on page 89 of the Draught Beer Quality Manual for determining what level to set the CO2 regulator to achieve desired carbonation.
Fruit Flavors, Explained
To get the purest, most authentic fruit flavor, brewers opt for whole peeled fruit or fruit purees… usually. For the most seltzer-like seltzer, the drink needs to maintain its clarity while packing a mouthful of flavor. Many recipes opt for extracts — I’ve found these to have a slightly metallic, sometimes oily flavor. In beer, there are flavors from the malt and aromas from yeast to mask some of these less-than-ideal extract side effects, but with seltzer all you have is carbonation to complement your flavor. That’s why flavoring made specifically for sparkling water really shines as a way to add pizzazz to a homemade hard seltzer.
The flavor drops by SodaStream are formulated to keep the beverage clear and come in many of the standard seltzer flavors like mango, lime, and grapefruit. I used to call my dog the canine vacuum. He kept my carpets clean, sucking up any food I accidentally dropped (as long as it wasn’t something healthy like fruits or vegetables). In retrospect, I should not have been so cavalier. Many foods humans eat are toxic to dogs. But let’s face it: Most of us enjoy slipping our dogs a bit of what we eat now and then. And that can be OK as long as we know what foods and amounts are safe. So, when it comes to human food for dogs, what can dogs eat and what should dogs definitely avoid? Can dogs eat bread? What about fruits and vegetables? And can dogs eat nuts or fish?

“There are some key differences,” says Dr. Deborah Linder, DVM, research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton, Massachusetts.
Dogs and humans digest and metabolize food differently, and a dog’s digestive system cannot break down some of the foods people eat, Dr. Linder warns. And we all know that some of the things we eat are not particularly healthy.
Most commercial dog foods provide a balanced diet with all the nutrients a dog needs. As long as your dog’s essential needs are met through an easily digested quality dog food, he shouldn’t need anything more. But you can feed your dog some other foods as healthy, low-calorie snacks.
“It’s perfectly safe to give up to 10 percent of the total calories from treats without unbalancing the diet,” says Dr. Linder, a veterinary nutrition specialist and diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
Before sharing your table scraps, be aware that there are concerns about human food for dogs beyond toxicity: allergic reactions, raw vs. cooked, bacterial infections from E. coli and Salmonella, weight gain, elevated salt levels, choking hazards and bones that can break teeth or splinter, causing internal blockages or punctures.
“Anything you give should be fully edible and not cause an obstruction,” Dr. Linder says. The keys to safely feeding your dog are education, moderation and introducing new foods slowly to monitor for adverse effects.
Remember: Each dog is unique. Factors like size, weight, age, breed, medical conditions and activity level affect what foods and amounts you should feed, so always check with your veterinarian before trying to feed any human food to your dog. As Dr. Linder says: “Know your pet.”

So which of our favorite people foods can we safely share with our four-legged friends? Here’s our lowdown on what your chow hound can chow down:
Can dogs eat bread?

Bread is the staff of life, and yes, dogs can eat it. Barley, rye and wheat do contain the protein gluten, but gluten sensitivity is uncommon in dogs (with the exception of a rare genetic disorder in Irish Setters).
While dogs can develop an allergy to any protein source, gluten poses no higher risk than other proteins. Unless your dog has a gluten sensitivity, it’s OK to feed plain white, whole-wheat or whole-grain bread with no spices or raisins (raisins are toxic to dogs).
As with any baked good, check the ingredients list on the package before serving.
On the other hand, raw dough that contains yeast is a no-no. Fermenting yeast cells produce alcohol (alcohol is toxic to dogs), and the dough can expand internally.
Can dogs eat dairy?

Lactose intolerance poses the main concern with dairy products. Lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products, can be difficult for some dogs (and people) to digest. As long as your dog is not lactose intolerant, milk is OK in small quantities.
Cheese — which many dogs love — also is OK, but due to its high fat and salt content, consider a low-fat cheese, such as mozzarella. Eggs that are thoroughly cooked are an easily digested protein source; never feed raw eggs due to the risk of Salmonella.
Avoid ice cream. Although there can be lactose issues with yogurt, it’s a better option that offers calcium and can aid digestion. Choose plain yogurt without added sugar or xylitol, a sugar substitute that is toxic to dogs.

The darker the chocolate (bittersweet and semisweet dark chocolate, cocoa powder and unsweetened baking chocolate), the more dangerous, but even milk chocolate and white chocolate should not be given to dogs.
Chocolate ingestion by pets is so common that the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center puts chocolate in its own category separate from other foods. Last year, the total number of calls the center received about chocolate worked out to nearly 50 a day, ranking chocolate fifth among the ASPCA’s 2017 Top Pet Toxins.
Be vigilant, especially with so many occasions popular for giving chocolate: Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. Think of it this way: Now you can have that chocolate all to yourself.

It’s not just what you feed your dog, but how much. Let’s chew the fat about the weighty issue of obesity.
Fifty-six percent of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, according to a 2017 clinical survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP).
That record number equals an estimated 50 million dogs, with more than 36 percent of those overweight and nearly 20 percent obese. And it’s a growing problem.“It’s the most common health threat,” says Dr. Ernie Ward, DVM, founder of the Ocean Isle, North Carolina-based APOP, which has been tracking rising pet obesity rates since 2006.
“It’s not just an aesthetic or unsightly condition,” Dr. Ward says. Fat tissue pumps out thousands of potentially harmful chemicals, hormones and compounds that can lead to cancer, high blood pressure, kidney failure, heart disease, reduced life expectancy, orthopedic disease, chronic inflammation, and respiratory and skin disorders, he says. Extra weight also impacts a dog’s quality of life, such as the ability to go for a walk or climb stairs.
Obesity is a complex disorder linked to many factors, including genetics, but overfeeding and under exercising are serious problems.
There is some good news. Dr. Ward says sharing some human foods with dogs, in moderation, might benefit your dog. “Dogs and people co-evolved eating many of the same things,” Dr. Ward says. It comes down to understanding “the nutritional value of the food,” he says, and taking into account your dog’s unique nutritional and caloric needs.
Dr. Ward advocates what he calls “the hybrid menu”: a combination of quality commercial dog food and whole foods (unprocessed, unrefined, without additives and artificial substances).
Because highly processed packaged food undergoes high heat and pressure that can alter fats and proteins, Dr. Ward suggests blending in things like lean protein sources and fresh, crunchy vegetables.
“By adding some of these whole foods, you’re getting all the complex fibers, all the real protein and fats that are contained in the natural state, which is ideal for digestibility,” Dr. Ward says. “Simply adding some broccoli, celery, zucchini to their regular kibble every day can have tremendous health impacts over time. Those little, simple things can make a big difference.”

I used to call my dog the canine vacuum. He kept my carpets clean, sucking up any food I accidentally dropped (as long as it wasn’t something healthy like fruits or vegetables). In retrospect, I should not have been so cavalier. Many foods humans eat are toxic to dogs. But let’s face it: Most of us enjoy slipping our dogs a bit of what we eat now and then. And that can be OK as long as we know what foods and amounts are safe. So, when it comes to human food for dogs, what can dogs eat and what should dogs definitely avoid? Can dogs eat bread? What about fruits and vegetables? And can dogs eat nuts or fish?

“There are some key differences,” says Dr. Deborah Linder, DVM, research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton, Massachusetts.
Dogs and humans digest and metabolize food differently, and a dog’s digestive system cannot break down some of the foods people eat, Dr. Linder warns. And we all know that some of the things we eat are not particularly healthy.
Most commercial dog foods provide a balanced diet with all the nutrients a dog needs. As long as your dog’s essential needs are met through an easily digested quality dog food, he shouldn’t need anything more. But you can feed your dog some other foods as healthy, low-calorie snacks.
“It’s perfectly safe to give up to 10 percent of the total calories from treats without unbalancing the diet,” says Dr. Linder, a veterinary nutrition specialist and diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
Before sharing your table scraps, be aware that there are concerns about human food for dogs beyond toxicity: allergic reactions, raw vs. cooked, bacterial infections from E. coli and Salmonella, weight gain, elevated salt levels, choking hazards and bones that can break teeth or splinter, causing internal blockages or punctures.
“Anything you give should be fully edible and not cause an obstruction,” Dr. Linder says. The keys to safely feeding your dog are education, moderation and introducing new foods slowly to monitor for adverse effects.
Remember: Each dog is unique. Factors like size, weight, age, breed, medical conditions and activity level affect what foods and amounts you should feed, so always check with your veterinarian before trying to feed any human food to your dog. As Dr. Linder says: “Know your pet.”

So which of our favorite people foods can we safely share with our four-legged friends? Here’s our lowdown on what your chow hound can chow down:
Can dogs eat bread?

Bread is the staff of life, and yes, dogs can eat it. Barley, rye and wheat do contain the protein gluten, but gluten sensitivity is uncommon in dogs (with the exception of a rare genetic disorder in Irish Setters).
While dogs can develop an allergy to any protein source, gluten poses no higher risk than other proteins. Unless your dog has a gluten sensitivity, it’s OK to feed plain white, whole-wheat or whole-grain bread with no spices or raisins (raisins are toxic to dogs).

Human Food for Dogs: What Can Dogs Eat?
I used to call my dog the canine vacuum. He kept my carpets clean, sucking up any food I accidentally dropped (as long as it wasn’t something healthy like fruits or vegetables). In retrospect, I should not have been so cavalier. Many foods humans eat are toxic to dogs. But let’s face it: Most of us enjoy slipping our dogs a bit of what we eat now and then. And that can be OK as long as we know what foods and amounts are safe. So, when it comes to human food for dogs, what can dogs eat and what should dogs definitely avoid? Can dogs eat bread? What about fruits and vegetables? And can dogs eat nuts or fish?

“There are some key differences,” says Dr. Deborah Linder, DVM, research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton, Massachusetts.
Dogs and humans digest and metabolize food differently, and a dog’s digestive system cannot break down some of the foods people eat, Dr. Linder warns. And we all know that some of the things we eat are not particularly healthy.
Most commercial dog foods provide a balanced diet with all the nutrients a dog needs. As long as your dog’s essential needs are met through an easily digested quality dog food, he shouldn’t need anything more. But you can feed your dog some other foods as healthy, low-calorie snacks.
“It’s perfectly safe to give up to 10 percent of the total calories from treats without unbalancing the diet,” says Dr. Linder, a veterinary nutrition specialist and diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
Before sharing your table scraps, be aware that there are concerns about human food for dogs beyond toxicity: allergic reactions, raw vs. cooked, bacterial infections from E. coli and Salmonella, weight gain, elevated salt levels, choking hazards and bones that can break teeth or splinter, causing internal blockages or punctures.
“Anything you give should be fully edible and not cause an obstruction,” Dr. Linder says. The keys to safely feeding your dog are education, moderation and introducing new foods slowly to monitor for adverse effects.
Remember: Each dog is unique. Factors like size, weight, age, breed, medical conditions and activity level affect what foods and amounts you should feed, so always check with your veterinarian before trying to feed any human food to your dog. As Dr. Linder says: “Know your pet.”

So which of our favorite people foods can we safely share with our four-legged friends? Here’s our lowdown on what your chow hound can chow down:
Can dogs eat bread?

Bread is the staff of life, and yes, dogs can eat it. Barley, rye and wheat do contain the protein gluten, but gluten sensitivity is uncommon in dogs (with the exception of a rare genetic disorder in Irish Setters).
While dogs can develop an allergy to any protein source, gluten poses no higher risk than other proteins. Unless your dog has a gluten sensitivity, it’s OK to feed plain white, whole-wheat or whole-grain bread with no spices or raisins (raisins are toxic to dogs).
As with any baked good, check the ingredients list on the package before serving.
On the other hand, raw dough that contains yeast is a no-no. Fermenting yeast cells produce alcohol (alcohol is toxic to dogs), and the dough can expand internally.
Can dogs eat dairy?

Lactose intolerance poses the main concern with dairy products. Lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products, can be difficult for some dogs (and people) to digest. As long as your dog is not lactose intolerant, milk is OK in small quantities.
Cheese — which many dogs love — also is OK, but due to its high fat and salt content, consider a low-fat cheese, such as mozzarella. Eggs that are thoroughly cooked are an easily digested protein source; never feed raw eggs due to the risk of Salmonella.
Avoid ice cream. Although there can be lactose issues with yogurt, it’s a better option that offers calcium and can aid digestion. Choose plain yogurt without added sugar or xylitol, a sugar substitute that is toxic to dogs.
A great option — some companies actually make ice cream-style treats specifically for dogs. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
Can dogs eat fish?
Fish can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which some studies show act as an anti-inflammatory and can help with joint pain.
Salmon should be thoroughly cooked to kill parasites and bacteria; be sure to remove the bones.
Shrimp also is OK if fully cooked and served plain without the shell. Fresh cooked tuna that has been deboned is fine; canned tuna packed in water and served plain is OK, too.
Can dogs eat fruit?
Many fruits can be a healthy, low-calorie snack for dogs. They are water- and nutrient-dense foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Feed fresh fruits, as many canned fruits are packed in sugary syrup. Frozen fruits can be OK, too, as long as they are thawed first.
Always wash fresh fruits and remove rinds, skin, peels, shells, cores, pits, stems, leaves and seeds, as they are choking hazards and, in some cases, can be toxic to dogs. With larger fruits, cut them into pieces before serving. Be aware that citric acid can cause stomach upset in some dogs. And never feed your dog wild berries that are not definitively identified and safe.
As long as you follow the above precautions, you can feed your dog several fruits, including apples, apricots, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, coconut, mango, oranges, pineapple, pumpkin, strawberries and watermelon.
Although the meat of cherries is not poisonous to dogs, the fruit’s small pit can cause big problems by becoming lodged in the throat or digestive tract. Best to avoid this bite-sized hazard and its preserved sugary form: maraschino cherries.
These fruits should never be fed to dogs: grapes, lemons, limes and raisins.

Like their wild canid ancestors, dogs can eat meat. It’s a good source of protein — with precautions. Fresh, lean meat is preferable, and all meat should be thoroughly cooked to prevent food-borne illnesses from parasites and bacteria (best not to cook in microwave ovens, as they can cook unevenly).
Grind the meat or cut it in bite-sized chunks to help prevent choking, and do not feed bones. Remove fat and skin, and serve plain, as sauces, gravies and seasonings might include ingredients your dog should not have. Beef, chicken (watch out for chicken bones, though) and turkey are fine. Pork and pork products like bacon and ham might best be avoided due to fat, salt and high calorie counts.
Hot diggity dog, what could be better for a dog than a hot dog? Well, lots of things. Hot dogs are a category unto themselves, as easily fitting under “Meats” as “Salty Foods” alongside processed lunch meats (think “bologna”). Dogs can eat hot dogs, but there’s a difference between “can” and “should.”
Despite their name, hot dogs are not good for dogs. They can contain lots of sodium (added both for flavoring and curing), fat, sugar and garlic (garlic is toxic to dogs).
And while hot dogs are considered a ready-to-eat meat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes on its website: “Although hot dogs are fully cooked, those at increased risk of foodborne illness should reheat hot dogs … until steaming hot before eating due to the threat of listeriosis.”
What’s more, hot dogs pose a choking hazard. If you feed hot dogs to your dog, check the ingredients list on the package and also look to see that they are uncured; reduced fat; made from grass-fed beef; and free of preservatives, artificial colors and artificial flavors. Cook and cut them before serving.
Can dogs eat nuts?
Nuts are a good source of protein, but they can be high in calories and salt, hard to digest and a choking hazard. Even nuts that are safe for dogs — like shelled cashews and shelled peanuts — should be unsalted and limited in quantity.
Others, such as almonds, pecans, pistachios and walnuts, are best avoided. And definitely say nuts to macadamia nuts — they are toxic to dogs.
Just as peanuts are safe for dogs, so is peanut butter. And it’s a favorite for many dogs (and a people favorite to watch a dog smack off the roof of his mouth). The best peanut butter to feed is plain, unsalted and raw (meaning it’s made with unroasted peanuts). Most importantly, be certain it does not contain the sweetener xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
Can dogs eat prepared foods?
Here’s the dish on prepared dishes: It might be tempting to feed a dog from your plate, but it’s not a good idea. Many ingredients in prepared meals (whether takeout or delivery, restaurant leftovers, store-bought or even your neighborhood potluck party) can be harmful to dogs, including chives, garlic and garlic powder, leeks and onions and onion powder.
And recognizing garlic and onion poisoning can be tricky because symptoms can take days to develop. Because you don’t know what ingredients might have gone into that soup, sauce, salad dressing, marinade, pizza and toppings, stuffed potato or confection, curb the desire to offer your dog prepared foods.
You can have your cake and eat it, too, but your dog can’t, and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.
Can dogs eat popcorn and other salty foods?

You don’t want a salty dog. While dogs need some salt, too much salt not only will make your dog thirsty, it also can lead to dehydration, hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney failure, heart disease and sodium poisoning.
Avoid excessively salty foods and snacks (particularly for dogs with a heart condition) like processed lunch meats, pickles, potato chips, pretzels, and, yes, fast foods (including french fries).
Not to ruin all the fun, popcorn is a snack dogs can eat if it’s air-popped, unsalted and unbuttered. Watch for un-popped kernels that can be a choking hazard and get caught in teeth.

Like fruits, vegetables that are safe for dogs are healthy, water- and nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Plain, fresh vegetables are preferable, as many canned vegetables contain added salt, but frozen veggies can work as long as they are thawed or cooked.
Always wash fresh vegetables first; most can be served raw or cooked, and steaming is a good cooking method. Grate larger vegetables or cut them in small pieces to avoid choking. The list of safe vegetables is long and includes broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, green beans, green peas, lettuce and zucchini.
Corn also is safe for dogs, but not corn on the cob — the cob is a choking hazard. Dogs can eat red tomatoes as long as they are ripe, but discard the leaves and stem.
Mushrooms cut both ways. Store-bought mushrooms are considered safe for dogs, but never feed wild mushrooms. There are about 10,000 known species of mushrooms, some of which are poisonous, so don’t take a chance with any found fungi. Given this, you might want to avoid mushrooms altogether.

While people love chocolate (and studies suggest it has human health benefits), sad to say this people favorite is not sweet on dogs. Chocolate (as well as cocoa and coffee) contains compounds called methylxanthines that are toxic to dogs.
The darker the chocolate (bittersweet and semisweet dark chocolate, cocoa powder and unsweetened baking chocolate), the more dangerous, but even milk chocolate and white chocolate should not be given to dogs.
Chocolate ingestion by pets is so common that the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center puts chocolate in its own category separate from other foods. Last year, the total number of calls the center received about chocolate worked out to nearly 50 a day, ranking chocolate fifth among the ASPCA’s 2017 Top Pet Toxins.
Be vigilant, especially with so many occasions popular for giving chocolate: Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. Think of it this way: Now you can have that chocolate all to yourself.

Fat tissue pumps out thousands of potentially harmful chemicals, hormones and compounds that can lead to cancer, high blood pressure, kidney failure, heart disease, reduced life expectancy, orthopedic disease, chronic inflammation, and respiratory and skin disorders, he says. Extra weight also impacts a dog’s quality of life, such as the ability to go for a walk or climb stairs.
Obesity is a complex disorder linked to many factors, including genetics, but overfeeding and under exercising are serious problems.
There is some good news. Dr. Ward says sharing some human foods with dogs, in moderation, might benefit your dog. “Dogs and people co-evolved eating many of the same things,” Dr. Ward says. It comes down to understanding “the nutritional value of the food,” he says, and taking into account your dog’s unique nutritional and caloric needs.
Dr. Ward advocates what he calls “the hybrid menu”: a combination of quality commercial dog food and whole foods (unprocessed, unrefined, without additives and artificial substances).

The cats were grinning. And I knew the evil spirits that had habited Isabella fled to the shelter of the cats in her moment of extinction.

The fat cat exploded into a puff of fur and blood.
The scrawny cat’s face registered confusion. The elegant cat’s eyes communicated understanding.
I grunted as I regained my bearings and footing, unafraid of the spirits jumping into me once I annihilated the only other living vessels.
The spirit of Vendetta that dictated my every step had them under pressure. He allowed no room for any other entities in my body.
Perceptive, the possessed cats attempted to flee. I chased them down with rapid fire, smearing them all over the place.
The cats died slow agonizing deaths that spoke of torment. When the last of the cats mournful wails subsided, the candles all died.
Engulfed in the darkness, I puffed my cancerstick, sucking on it like it was an oxygen tank, knowing this world held things a lot more detrimental to my health than cigarettes
Feeling nothing, I walked back to the botanica, stepped over the gorilla floating in a pool of spreading blood, contemplated a swig of his Ron-cana, yet, stepped in the office and snatched up the keys to the front door. It was the only way out. Security was designed in such a way that no one could come or leave without being buzzed in or out.
Everyone was dead though … buzzing the devil’s intercom.
As I walked through the botanica, pass the caged pigeons and chickens I realized that those three evil entities could of sought refuge and escaped to one of the birds. And as I studied those caged birds I knew that that was exactly what had occurred.
Flicking my Bic lighter, I smiled at the blood-speckled birds. In return they cooed and clucked.
I stepped back over the gorilla’s corpse, retrieved his bottle of over-proof rum off the counter and began dousing all the fine clothes veiling the statued saints. Flooding their shrines in Caribbean moonshine. I lit fire to various fine cloths. All along eyeing the frightened birds. I took a swig of the Buck, wiped my mouth and splashed the rest over the trapped birds.
Fire was rapidly spreading, growing. flames licked and whipped at me.
I steamed my cancerstick to the green line like it was the last mothafucka left, when the cherry was alive and sizzling, I flicked the butt into the cage with the most blood-speckled birds.
I walked out of the flaming botanica to the sound of flapping wings on fire.
