#whereas pink string is more; IT COULD BE TRUE BUT REALLY I THINK IT WOULD JUST BE NICE/COOL
Text
Alright, I pulled out my corkboard and red string again, this time in hopes of dissecting the MAG timeline to see if there is anything there to support my fan theory of:
~Could Jurgen Leitner be Martin’s Dad~
And so far, signs point to a solid "it could be possible”. So in lieu of this, I will be presenting all my evidence with exceptional bias so it better illustrates my desired outcome. Okay? Okay! Let’s get into it.
Let’s begin with 1985, when Jurgen Leitner supposedly begins renting an office in Pall Mall, central London. Presumably this is just where he sets up an office, and not the actual location of the Library, which isn’t something we get-- anyways, getting sidetracked, uhhh.
Right, we know, vaguely, that Martin was born in 1987, two years after Leitner would have set up shop in Central London; and interestingly enough, in that same year of Martin’s birth, Leitner attempted to hire some people to dig a big ol’ hole in the floor of his office to lead into the tunnels built beneath the building. And this could just be wishful thinking, but I believe it is implied that these tunnels connect to the other tunnels of Millbank Prison. Interconnected, and with many exits leading to various parts of the city. Basically, a needlessly intricate means of escape (I guess balconies and back doors just didn’t exist yet, you know) should shit get real. Anyways, the point I’m trying to make, is that it would make sense for Leitner to suddenly be very interested in having direct access to these tunnels from his main office after receiving news that he’s a father, or whatever. Or maybe it’s just because he’s always been a loser that loves vibing in tunnels.
[Obligatory readmore, because this shit gets long, and even more ramble-y. Also I’m not sorry, because y’all are more than welcome to continue scrolling past this mess]
Alright, now fast-forward to 1994, the destruction of the Library. At this point in time, Martin would have been 7. Now hold up! According to the Magnus Archives Wiki, Martin’s father abandoned the family when he was 8 or 9; so isn’t that a whole in the theory right there? No. It’s not. Because the only thing that is implied about Leitner around 1994, is that he went into hiding after the destruction of the Library. At no point is it implied that he even left the country (or even London, but like, I refuse to believe he’s that stupid; even if that alternative is hilarious). To set up my point, I’m going to shift the focus onto Martin now, and what his life might have been like when he was younger.
So, by present events (present actually referring to like, pre-season 4, actually), Martin’s mother is in a care home in Devon. Could be because care homes are cheaper there, or something, I have no idea. Honestly people in my family don’t live long enough to ever even consider this option, so I don’t know how assisted living works at all lmao. But let’s say, for simplicities sake, that Martin actually just grew up around Devon; and I’m throwing a dart at a map and declaring Plymouth as the city he grew up in. Anyways, why does this matter? Because I do in fact believe that Leitner is stupid enough to think that changing which county he lives in counts as being in hiding. And he gets maybe one (1) good summer with his family before the weight of his sins bare down on him, and he realizes that staying in one place really isn’t an option. So maybe he tries travelling around a bit; but inevitably he always ends up coming back to Plymouth. It takes him a year, maybe two, to finally realize that this won’t work forever. His habits are too predictable, and what’s this? The mother of his child is getting sick; and her condition only seems to worsen over time (you know, like how it usually works when someone is taken ill.); and Leitner gets it into his head that he could be the cause of it; so what is the safest course of action, but to completely abandon his family? Surely things will turn out for the better for them all if he were to just... disappear. To cut ties entirely, so as to make sure no one ever comes after them in an attempt to get to him.
And that worked out fucking great, didn’t it.
Bunch of unimportant stuff happens, and eventually Martin ends up dropping out of school, presumably only a year early from graduation (weird but fine); and it’s safe to assume he eventually ends up traveling to London in hopes of better job opportunities. Plus, if he’s gonna be lying on his CV, probably better to head out of county to some place where no one knows him from anywhere to begin with, right? That makes sense, and none of you can say otherwise.
And where does he find himself sliding into a new job position? Oh, that’s right; at the Magnus Institute. In the Library. I’m just saying. I am just saying, that’s a little interesting. I mean, he lied about having a degree in parapsychology on his CV; so if Bouchard really wanted to play along like he thought the CV was entirely legit, it actually would’ve made more sense to put him in Research, or even in Artefact Storage with a degree like that. But nope, Bouchard put him in the Library. Though, I guess we don’t know exactly what all might’ve been on Martin’s faked CV. But I swear to god, if we get bonus content that’s just Martin’s faked CV and it even hints at him working at a “family library/bookshop” I will spontaneously combust.
Regardless, in 2009, supposedly (according to the wiki), Martin began working at the Institute. Personally, I always thought he started working there in 2010, but that doesn’t matter. I actually like 2009 better, because then a year later, Leitner apparently begins working with Gertrude Robinson. Which I find interesting. I mean, really there’s no reason for them not to work together, I just find the timing of it interesting. Of course, Leitner (in MAG80) alludes to the fact that Gertrude was likely only working with him because there was a lack of anyone else around. But that really only explains Gertrude’s interest in Leitner. What attracted Leitner to the Magnus Institute in the first place, I wonder? Aside from the fact that it’s essentially the Library of Alexandria of research on the Entities.
But Leitner had managed to stay out of public eye for about 16 years, why would he chose right around then to start playing peekaboo with the Beholding? Rhetorical question, of course. Y’all should already know exactly where I’m going with this line of questioning. Martin. Martin is what lead Leitner to the Institute, and to Gertrude. Dude just wanted to check up on his son, and now he’s just as trapped as everyone who works for the damn Institute because of all these weird rituals and shit. Plus maybe there was another reason why Leitner went through so much effort to help Gertrude, even putting himself on the line for it; and I think we can all agree that Leitner is a pretty selfish dude who’s only real character trait is being like a fucking cockroach. Straight up, the only way to kill a cockroach is to beat those suckers until they pop like a fucking pimple-- sorry, I’m actually getting ahead of myself, I don’t want to talk about that yet, um.
Leitner’s biggest character trait, and on some level, character flaw, is his Self-Preservation instinct. When the going gets tough, his own health and safety comes first. But maybe he gets a bit sentimental in his old age, and maybe he struck a deal with Gertrude; if he helps her stop the Unknowing, (or actually I think it would’ve been the Dark’s ritual first), she will bring his son down to the tunnels so Leitner can see how he’s grown, and maybe even talk to him. I just think that would be interesting character motivation; because at the end of the day, it’s still a pretty selfish motivation. But at this point, Gertrude’s only other option for help is a teenaged Shadow the Hedgehog wannabe; so she’d likely agree to just about anything for the extra pair of hands. And given what later happens in regards to the Dark’s ritual, which then results in Gertrude’s death; Leitner gets scared back into his hole in the ground.
But hey, I guess things actually kind of worked out for ol’ Jurgen. Because like a year later, his son* (*allegedly, according to apparently no one but me) starts living in the Archives. It’s like he’s living in his son’s basement, he can just pop up for tea and say hi whenever. Maybe complain about all the bugs that keep crawling around. Or not, because Jürgen Leitner is a coward. But I 100% would not put it past him to shuffle his old bones up into the Archives to stand creepily at the edge of wherever Martin was sleeping and angst quietly at the sight of his son. It’s creepy, funny, and sad. Basically a peak TMA scenario right there.
Then Leitner gets brutally piped by Bouchard. Actually, can I say it like that? “Piped” isn’t some kind of... new-age slang for something, is it? God, I hope not. Anyways; Leitner isn’t just beat upside the head with a length of pipe, but literally pulped by Bouchard (or at the very least implied so), in a way that makes identifying the guy difficult enough that he remains a John Doe straight up until Elias confesses to the murder. Now, obviously there are plenty of reasons for this; given that both Daisy and Basira are familiar with the name Leitner, so presumably other sectioned officers would be as well; so there was at least a slim chance that whatever officer got sent to the Institute upon the discovery of the body might just recognize Leitner immediately. But, and sorry to sidetrack here, but there was just one thing that really stood out to me about Martin. One thing that always stuck with me, that for some reason was the main thing that made me thing Leitner could’ve been his dad.
Martin looks like his father, whoever that may or may not be. It is explicitly canon, that Martin looks like whoever his dad is. So wouldn’t it be better safe than sorry for Bouchard to beat Leitner to a pulp wherein no one could easily discern any major features of him once he was found. After all, it would make things rather messy and a bit too complicated if everyone who saw the body was like, “wow! That looks just like you, Martin.” So really, it’s for the best that not only did Bouchard kill Leitner, but he thoroughly did so.
And so, I will end this already way to long of a ramble with the one thing that solidified me on this theory, and Spoilers for Season 5 of MAG, but... In MAG181 Salesa says, “Now you mention it, you actually remind me of Jurgen a bit. In his younger days of course.” to Martin. Of course, Martin did just shoot out a snappy one-liner about books, but... it’s the clarification of Jurgen “in his younger days”, that gets me. Mikaele could just have easily said something about Martin just “sounding” like Leitner. But the way this reads, and how it’s spoken, even, it seems more like someone that might’ve been looking at Martin for awhile, squinting at him as if he’s seen that face somewhere before, and then right when Martin mentions books, it finally clicks. After all, it would’ve been almost 20 years, or possibly more, since Salesa would have left Leitner’s employ.
So yeah, I admit this theory has a much weaker backbone then my Banks/Folger post, but... I just think it’s neat. And it’s another one of those things that actually doesn’t have any affect on the major plot whatsoever. I dunno, maybe it was meant to be some sort of subplot early on that got ditched or something? Point is, that’s all for now, and with any luck, I will never post another crack theory again, and the TMA tag can be safe from my ramblings once more.

Lean (Miraak x Reader):
Contemplating on writing for Pyramid Head every once in a while since I can't get the thick bastard off my mind but we'll see what the future brings
---------------------------------------------
"Do you like winter, Miraak?" I asked the man strolling quietly beside me. "Not necessarily. However, I remember a time when I did. My temple always felt a bit warmer-- more enjoyable during that time." I snorted at him in amusement, to which he wasn't fond of. "I just imagined you stringing up holiday decor." He merely scoffed in denial, though we both knew it was true.
While searching for another conversation topic, my foot slid against the mud beneath me. "Careful," Miraak warned as his hands clasped firmly around my shoulders. My breath was trapped in my throat from the sudden startle, but somehow he only made it worse. Once my voice came back to me, I said, "uh...-- yeah. Thank you." Damn, his hands were so warm. I could feel the heat emitting from them even through my armor. Alas, the soothing feeling dissappeared as soon as he retracted his arms.
"Honestly, I'm surprised you hadn't already cracked your skull before I came along. It seems that you are always tripping and stumbling wherever you go." I scratched my cheek and chuckled sheepishly. "Ah, you know me so well."
"That is only because I stand witness to it," he uttered. We continued onward to Morthal in silence. A week ago, Jarl Idgrod sent me a letter of assistance; "potential murdurer on the loose," it had read. She noted that she wasn't one to fall victim to senseless gossip, but over the last several days she had been growing paranoid of the situation. Thus, she requested us to investigate. "I wonder why the jarl wants two dragonborn to take care of a killer instead of the guards? Gods, I feel like most of the soldiers are just using this pitiful war as an excuse to be lazy," I grumbled with my arms crossing.
"I agree. Though as far as I'm concerned, she wants you to handle it, not I." I perked up at his remark. "What do you mean? Everyone should know by now that you're just as powerful as I am. We've been traveling together for three months." Miraak diverted his gaze from me and pointed it straight ahead. "Perhaps, but you and I are still very different from one another. The people of Skyrim view you as a hero to be remembered for ages, whereas I will forever be remembered as a traitor-- if I was even remembered at all." The atmosphere around us suddenly became very dim. For a moment, the only noise that could be heard was the mire sloshing under our boots.
"That's bullshit," I retorted finally. Miraak was taken aback by my sudden change of attitude. "Excuse my language, but it is. Look at all of the good you've done since we've been together! We took down a vampire lord for crying out loud! And yeah, we weren't thanked for it or anything--"
"Y/n."
"But that doesn't matter. What does matter is that you put in a lot of effort to make the world safer, and I think that deserves respect."
"Y/n." By now, Miraak was no longer walking at my side. "What is it?" Before he was able to respond, the muddy ground had fallen loose beneath me and I plummeted into a brown socket of water. Oh yeah, I forgot that we were trudging through a swamp. The filth shot through my mouth and nose as I was completely sumberged. To make matters worse, the water was also incredibly frigid, making it even more difficult to sort through my panic. A pair of arms dove into the murk and proceeded to yank me up by my collar.
I gurgled, spluttered, and heaved strong breaths once I was dragged out of harm's way. Miraak shook his head at me all the while. I could practically feel the smirk hiding under his mask. "Oh, yeah. Real funny. Please continue... to remind me of how much... of a klutz I am," I rasped, still trying to flow air into my lungs. "I did try to warn you, you know. You were about to walk straight into the pond," the man defended. "Ok. I'll give you that." Miraak helped me to my feet after I finally regained my composure. "Oh, great," I sighed at the muck covering me head-to-toe. "I look so unprofessional." He skimmed over the grime coated over my outfit before scooping a clump of mud and smearing some over his robes. "I suppose we'll both have to look unprofessional, then." My cheeks tainted a dark pink at his actions, but I decided to blame it on the nip in the air.
My arms hugged my body when I started to shiver. Going for a dip in late autumn definitely wasn't the best of choices. Miraak scanned over the map and pinpointed our distance from Morthal. "We won't be able to arrive there before nightfall. We still have an hour left to go," he informed. I groaned to myself in reply. "Guess we'll have to make camp, then." He nodded, gesturing me to follow him.
In a matter of minutes, he had already secured a decent campfire and was now assembling the tent. Meanwhile, I was sitting on a nearby log with my bedroll enveloped around my trembling body. I was enjoying watching him, though. "I'd say you're a natural. When did you get so skilled at camping?" I inquired once he took a seat next to me. "By learning from you," he stated simply. Gods, how could he be such a jerk yet act so charming?! I avoided saying anything more and began scrubbing the dirt from my armor with a wet rag.
It was freezing, tonight. There was no comforting glow from the moon and stars due to the thick layer of clouds overhead, which only made it feel colder. I shuddered when a breeze travelled through the area and tormented my body. I was still wearing my undershirt and trousers, and even those were still damp. The cloth made my fingers sting the more I used it, until I felt Miraak's hand take ahold of my own. "Your fingers are red," were the only words that left his mouth before he grabbed my other hand and squeezed them both gently. I was so shocked by this that I couldn't even so much as blink. "Are you cold?" I had forgotten about the prickles climbing over my skin. "Um--uhh, kind of." How did my voice become so small?
Before I could protest, I was pulled closer to Miraak. And now that I left exposed, he felt even warmer than he did earlier. I wasn't even touching him! Not to mention how nice his hands felt. He was like a portable smelter! I stayed more silent than a moth as he continued to caress my fingers and palms. There was no telling what was going on inside of that brain of his.
"You may lean against me, if you like."
Oh.
Oh!
My heart was thrashing around inside of my chest. He wanted me to just... slide even closer and lean on him?! Just like that?! By now, my mind was spiraling in both confusion and embarrassment. Still, I was very cold. There wasn't any harm in doing it, right? He was the one who offered. I ultimately accepted his proposal.
It started off with our knees touching awkardly, and then with my head attempting to rest against his shoulder, which failed due to the golden scales protruding out from his sleeve and jabbing me in the side of the head. Miraak eventually lifted his arm, inviting me to scooch under it-- to which I did. As soon as I got situated, he let his hand ease onto my shoulder. I was so flustered that I could barely breathe. It was suffocating, practically unbearable, yet I only felt myself nestling further into him. "You're really warm," I mumbled.
Oh, dear.
Why on Nirn did I say that? I sounded like a pervert!!! What if he thought I was creepy?! My heart dropped as he held me still and turned to look at me. "Y/n, how do you feel?" It was made to be a question, but it sounded more of a demand. I sat tense for a long while, lips parted yet unmoving. "About...?" I gulped when he slowly placed my hand flat against his chest. I could feel his heart throbbing at a rapid pace, as was mine. "Me."
Miraak's voice was low and sounded on edge. Perhaps he was more nervous than I thought he was? My next movements were reckless. Recklessness seemed to be my only sense of courage, right now. I carefully drew his hand towards me and slipped off his glove. He didn't stop me, however his muscles twitched under my touch. I stared at his pale skin for a long while. It was decorated with veins and had a scar stretched over his knuckles. Thanks to the protection of his gloves, his fingernails were in prestine condition. In short, his hands were utterly glorious.
I tilted my face down and pressed my lips against his scar, leaving him breathless. "Does that answer your question?" I asked Miraak with a flushed grin. Without responding, he brushed his thumb over my cheek and felt the entirety of my features. His hand was so calloused and smoothe! I cupped my own against it, keeping it there for as long as possible. Once again, I was pulled into another embrace, this one being much tighter and affectionate. Neither of us decided to speak, and somehow it felt more befitting that way.
With my head resting against Miraak's chest, I could hear his heartbeat quite clearly. It was much slower compared to earlier, more soothing than anything. He wasn't very sure where to place his hands, so he kept one firm on my waist and the other rubbing my hair. Sure, my face was hotter than a bonfire and there was still panic fresh on my mind. Then again, I also felt so calm in his arms. This may have been the first time in my life where I actually felt normal. Everything around me simply fell into place. It was selfish of me to inwardly beg for this moment to never end. As a dragonborn, I had my responsibilites, but for now I kicked those responsibilities aside. I had the right to be selfish every now and then.
"Maybe I should go diving into swamps more often," I teased, breaking through the comfortbale silence. I felt my heart flutter in the midst of him vibrating a soft chuckle. "That would certainly be an entertaining idea. Though I might not get the same reaction from you each time." I peered up at my new love interest with a quirked brow. "What kind of reaction?" In one swift motion, Miraak nudged up his mask to his nose and blessed me with a kiss. It was quick and simple, hardly lingering over my lips in time for me to process it. It was as if I had just imagined it!
Even so, the blush stained on my cheeks was already spreading to my ears. This man was a complete menace. His mask was already tipped back down, but the coy smile he was holding was evident. "You bastard," I hissed. He only shrugged his shoulders at me. "If you fall into the swamp again, I may even give you another kiss," Miraak jested. I proceeded to whack his bicep.
------------------------
I bet Miraak got those plump ass lips :^3

A Little into You (Junkyu x Reader) (Ch. 9)
Chapter 9 - A step further.
Word count: 3k words
Genre: Fanfiction, PG13, Comedy, Romance.
A/N: Hi! Here’s Chapter 9! Thank you so much for waiting, and I really hope you all love this one 😀🧡
Now, it had been three weeks since you last met any of the Treasure members since you all had that lunch at the Japanese Restaurant. What’s that? Did you read that right?
Yes, it’s been three weeks.
And by now, the group chat that you and the 5 members have, had already expanded after Yedam added in the rest of the group in there.
This was your first time being in a group chat with these many people. Aside from your office’s group chat of course.
So one day whilst at work, you received a text from the Treasure group you were in.
 Chatroom:
Junkyu: Yeorobun~ Jihoon is asking if you all want to get some IKEA meatballs after today’s schedule!
Hyunsuk: Oh? But we’re finishing quite late today. Are you sure they’re still open late at night?
Junkyu: Oh. Right. @Jihoon Hey! Why did you recommend IKEA?? You know they don’t open after 11pm!
Jihoon: 😂😂😂 I knew they don’t.
Junkyu: ???? Then? Why’d you tell me to ask the group about it??
Jeongwoo: 😂😂 Junkyu-hyung…
Jihoon: I just like messing with you. Besides, you chatted the group with y/n in it so…. 😏
Y/n: ….are you guys okay….
You smiled to yourself reading the chat again. It was silly, yet, amusing. You sort of missed talking to your new friends to be honest.
“Y/n, Mr Bae is looking for you,” your colleague, Soomin said, making you stop looking at your phone.
“Oh? Oh, right. I’ll go to him now,” You said as you got up from your seat.
Soomin nodded and went back to her desk not far from yours.
                                                               *
Jihoon was grabbing himself a cup of water from the practice room’s water dispenser when he heard his best friend yell from behind him.
“YAH! PARK JIHOON! What’d you do that for???” Junkyu huffed, as he entered the door of the room.
Jihoon chuckled and drank his water before setting the cup down and facing his best friend.
“What? I didn’t do much?”
“Yahhhh, that was so embarrassing!” Junkyu exclaimed, as he ruffles his hair.
“Hm? What? Hey, I only asked you to ask the rest about IKEA and you were the one who chatted the wrong group,” Jihoon stated matter-of-factly.
“We need to change the group’s name! Y/n must think I’m dumb now,” Junkyu said, pouting.
“Sure, sure, we can change it later. We can write it as Treasure x Y/n. How’s that? Sounds like a collaboration, right?” Jihoon snickered as he pulls out his phone from his pocket.
“Whatever, as long as I don’t have to embarrass myself anymore,”
“Hmm?” Jihoon hummed. “Since when do you care about what y/n thinks of you, huh?”
“I-I don’t! I just don’t want to appear dumb, that’s all,” Junkyu stuttered slightly.
Jihoon grinned at him, “Sure, Junkyu.”
“Hey!” Hyunsuk’s voice appeared as he entered the practice room.
Both Jihoon and Junkyu turned to see who it was.
“You guys are early today. Your vocal training ended early?” Hyunsuk asked as he headed towards where Jihoon was, grabbing himself a cup of water from the water dispenser as well.
Both Jihoon and Junkyu nodded at his question.
Hyunsuk gulped down his drink, disposed the cup and walked to the middle of the room. There, he sat down and gestured the rest to sit with him.
“What are you both doing standing there? Come, sit! You should get proper leg rest before we start dancing later on,”
Junkyu and Jihoon went towards him and sat with him.
“So…what do you guys want for dinner tonight? Minus the IKEA idea of course,” Hyunsuk said.
Jihoon giggled when he saw Junkyu tense up from the word IKEA.
“No, noo! I didn’t mean it that way Junkyu,” Hyunsuk said, laughing a little. “Really though, where do you all want to order from for dinner?”
“I’m fine with whatever you guys are having,” Jihoon said.
“You guys want to gather in one dorm and just eat altogether there?” Hyunsuk asked, now scrolling his phone, searching for a suitable food menu for dinner.
“Sure, sounds okay with me,” Junkyu said. He tugged on the string of his pink treasure hoodie, realising that the strings were uneven.
“Ahh,” Jihoon stretched his arms out before laying down on the floor. “Hmm. Hey, Junkyu, do you want to invite y/n as well?”
Junkyu choked on his own saliva hearing Jihoon mention your name again. “Wh-what??”
Jihoon and Hyunsuk started laughing out loud.
“Hey, Jihoon, stop teasing Junkyu like that. He’ll hit us both later if you keep doing that to him,”
“Yeah! Why are you always mentioning her name here, huh? If you want to invite her so bad, why don’t you do it, huh?” Junkyu huffed as well.
Jihoon got up and sat back up properly. “Hey, don’t say that. I just might really invite her, you know,” he smirked at his two friends there.
“But y/n doesn’t know where we live? And I don’t think the rest are ready to reveal where we live to her too. I mean, we’ve only known her for what, a month or two?” Hyunsuk wondered aloud.
Jihoon shook his head. “Who says it has to be at our dorms?”
“Oh? Then, where?” Junkyu asked, extreme confusion portrayed on his face.
Jihoon smiled, showing his eye smile at his friends. “I’ll take care of it. Just find us some good food for takeout tonight,”
                                                                *
“I don’t think that’s necessary Mr Bae,” you said, shaking your head from the idea he mentioned before you.
“Oh come on, y/n! You’ve been working here for over a year! It’s only reasonable you get promoted to do something else,” he said.
You kept quiet. Truthfully, you didn’t think you deserved any promotion at all. A raise in your salary? Maybe yes to that, but a new post?
Your eyes were kept lowered, as you stare at your thighs as you stay seated opposite Mr Bae’s desk.
Mr Bae is the president of the company, and yes, he is your teacher’s son. This was the man who gladly took you in to work with him when his mother was worried what would become of you when you missed your college entrance exam.
“Y/n,”
Your eyes lifted to look at him. “Yes”
“My mother would have wanted this for you too, you know.”
“I…I don’t know, Mr Bae,”
“What’s stopping you? Tell me,”
You shifted uncomfortably in the big chair you’re sitting in. You picked your fingers as you began thinking whether you should voice your concerns to your boss.
“Y/n?”
You inhaled deeply before letting out a deep sigh.
“Alright, fine. You caught me. I am worried. I feel like I don’t deserve this because first, I am the youngest person here, and to be promoted into an important team of the company just makes it seem fishy, don’t you think so? Besides, what’s everyone gonna say when they find out that I’m given that post when in reality all I have is a high school certificate??”
Your president grinned at this. This was the first time you have ever said anything this much to him. You had always been quiet around the people in this company, and seeing you rant out your concerns somewhat eases him.
Mr Bae leaned back into his tall, leather office chair. “Hmm. That’s it? That was all you’re worried about?”
You shook your head in disbelief. How could your president see this as a small matter? You were anxious about this, and yet he was so calm about it.
“Mr Bae, you don’t understand—”
“Please, call me Joonyoung. Or Joon for short. You’re my mother’s friend, and to be frank, our age isn’t that far apart, no?”
Your eyes narrowed at this, “Correction; I was your mother’s student. And, you’re literally 8 years older than I am so—”
Joonyoung laughed at this, clearly amused by you. “Alright, that’s fine, y/n. I’d understand why you’d benchmark yourself. You are indeed, way younger than I am,”
“Yes, indeed,” you huffed.
“But I still think you should accept the promotion,”
You scoffed. “Look, I told you, I am already concerned abou—”
“Soomin recommended you to be in her team too, you know,” he interrupted you before you could nag at him about your reasonings again.
That made you stop. You straightened your posture in your seat.
“S-soomin-eonnie? The one who seats not far in front of me in the office?”
“Yeah. She’s been asking for you to be on her comms team couple of times now, actually. I just didn’t want to push you before this because I knew you would refuse, with your ‘I am only a high school graduate’ excuse,” he said, adding quote marks when he mentioned your excuse.
“But…why?” You asked, confused.
Surely, Soomin is the only person you’ve interacted most in the office, and she’s quite young too, around 6 years older than you. But your interactions with her were mostly work-based. You were in charge of designing brochures, pamphlets, slides, creating reading materials and such for her and her team.
Whereas for Soomin, she was the leader in her unit, the Comms Team; they call it. What her team does was, they would go out on trips to other companies and provide a lecture or meeting for staffs and brief them on how they can incorporate and learn English language for their staff and companies. Sounds easy but it’s a handful once you’ve experienced the pressure of meeting people all around the city.
“So..?” Joonyoung’s voice broke you from your string of thoughts.
“Will you join Soomin? She’s been talking about how helpful you were to her and she felt bad that you were stuck doing all the computer work in the office.” Joonyoung got up from his seat and decided to peek outside his office’s window.
“She said that she felt like you had more potential than just being a person who sits at her desk and doing all mini jobs for everyone else in the office,”
“H-hey! That’s not true! I have students too,” you added, not wanting to make it seem like your job was that pitiful.
Joonyoung turned to look at you now. “Please, y/n, your students are the 3 staff that will soon be leaving to be relocated into Karako W’s office,”
You pouted. You almost forgot about the merge your boss had secured almost a month ago.
“So, let’s just say yes, shall we?” he smiled at you.
You let out a sigh.
“Great! I’ll take that as a yes!” he said happily. “I’ll let my mother know about this, she’ll be happy for you,”
“Sure…”
“Oh come on y/n, cheer up! You’re getting a promotion and a raise! Anyone would be happy to be in your shoes!”
You groaned. “Anyone but me,”
“Hey, at least now in your new post, you get to visit other big companies and collaborate with them,” he smiled, still convincing you.
You blinked a few times. You wondered if you ever got a chance to visit YGE’s company as well?
                                                                    *
You got back to your desk to see your phone buzzing non-stop. You hurried to sit down and looked at it closely.
4 new messages from Jihoon TRSR
“Huh? Jihoon-ssi?” you muttered to yourself.
Just as you were about to open the messages, your phone started buzzing again in your hands, but this time it was a heavy buzz since it was a call.
Panicked, you answered it without looking at the screen.
“Hello?” You answered, slightly whispering since you didn’t want to disrupt the quiet atmosphere in your office.
“Y/n! Quick! I need help!” Jihoon’s voice, rang in your ears, all panicked.
“What? Why? What’s wrong Jihoon?” you felt your forehead creasing, now that you heard his panicked voice. Did something bad happen to them?
“Y/n, please. You gotta help us. The management…Jaehyuk…”
“What, what?? What’s going on??” Your tone in your voice rose, now that you were anxious to know what happened. But Jihoon wouldn’t complete his sentences!
“Please, I’ll tell you all about it later. But you gotta help me, help us, please?” he pleaded through the phone.
You took a deep breath and exhaled. Your eyes dart around the office to see if anyone was watching you. None. Coast clear.
“Alright, Jihoon. What can I do for you?”
                                                                 *
“Bingo!” Jihoon said happily, once he got off the phonecall with you.
The rest of the group looked at him and wondered what he was so happy about.
Jihoon walked to his spot in the choreography formation and did some light stretches since he took a short break to call you just now.
“Hey, Hoon, what are you so happy about, huh?” Hyunsuk said, as he noticed his friend’s beaming reflection from the room’s mirror.
“Nah, I’m just happy about tonight, that’s all,” Jihoon answered, his bright smile still plastered on his face.
“Ookay…”
“Speaking of which, have you decided what to buy for tonight’s dinner?” Jihoon asked Hyunsuk back.
“Oh, I asked the rest and they said they wanted pizza. That good for tonight?”
“Sounds great! And I’ve got the perfect place for us to eat too, tonight!”
Doyoung clapped his hands at this, “Wahhh hyung, both you and Hyunsuk are really treating us really well tonight, huh? What’s the special occasion?” he asked.
“Oh nothing, it’s just for all your hard work today,” Jihoon answered happily.
“Yayyyy! We’re having pizza tonight!” Junghwan cheered happily.
“Oh yeah, where are we going to have dinner tonight? Hyunsuk-hyung’s dorm?” Jaehyuk asked.
Jihoon winked at his dongsaengs. “It’s a surprise.”
                                                                  *
 (Y/n’s Apartment – Nighttime)
 “Eonnie! Eonnie!” you called out.
Your sister’s breathing was ragged and heavy. Like she was suffocating badly.
You got up from your chair beside her bed and ran outside the room, hoping to bump into a doctor who wasn’t busy at the time.
You found one not far from the nurse’s counter, and you grabbed him by the arm.
“Doctor! Please, please, my sister—” you shook your head and gestured him to follow you.
When both you and the doctor arrived in your sister’s room, she was already shaking in her bed, her breathing more ragged now.
The doctor rushed in and checked your sister’s vitals and eyes.
“She’s having a seizure! Nurses, hurry!” he called out loudly.
Soon, you saw two to three nurses rush in to help the doctor.
You stood by the doorframe, holding on to it, as if you were going to fall if you ever let go.
You watched as they tried to tend to your sister and your tears wouldn’t stop flowing down your cheeks. You were sobbing on your own now, watching needles being poked into your sister’s delicate skin again.
You shook your head over and over again, sobbing.
Please don’t leave me, eonnie. Please.
You woke up from your sleep, panting.
You sat up in your bed slowly, trying to regain yourself.
It was a dream. It was only a dream.
You sniffled to yourself. You realised your cheeks were wet and you proceeded to wipe them on the sleeves of your shirt.
“Ah shucks. I can’t believe I cried in my sleep,” you mumbled to yourself.
Eeeeeekkk.
Your eyes widened. What was that? Did you hear wrongly? Or was it really a chair moving?
You gulped. You grabbed your phone on your nightstand and checked the time.
11.37 pm.
You frowned to yourself. Just how early did you fall asleep?
You kept quiet a little longer, just to see if there were any more noises.
A good whole minute passed by. No noise.
“Huh, I must be imagining things,” you assured yourself.
You were about to pull your covers over yourself again when you heard it again.
EEEEeeeeeekkkkk. Eeek.
That sounded like two chairs. Or specifically, the sound of the chair in your kitchen makes because you fairly remember how it sounds like ever since you removed the carpet underneath the chairs to be washed the other day.
Your heart raced. You slowly got up from your bed, slipped on your room slippers and slowly made your way towards the door.
You didn’t open your bedroom door or anything, since you didn’t have the courage to do so. But you pressed your ear against it, just in case you could hear anything.
“What are we doing here, hyung? Aren’t we trespassing?”
“Nah, we’re not. Believe me, this is legal,”
“But she’s not here. She’s probably asleep already,”
“Yeah, hyung, we should leave. This isn’t right,”
“Oh come on you all, she could be curled up in bed reading a book. Who the heck sleeps this early??”
You could your own breathing growing louder. Are there trespassers in your house??
Who should you call? Should you call the police?
Your head turned to look at your phone that you left on your nightstand. You decided to go over there to take it when suddenly you heard the doorknob getting turned.
This is crazy! You were in your pajamas and you didn’t have any weapon on you! Heck, you didn’t have your phone with you right now too!
You decided to just brace yourself and just throw in a hasty punch at whoever this trespasser is. The nerve! How dare they come into your home this time of the night?!
Just then, the door creaked open and you hurriedly pounced on the trespasser, making you both fall to the floor. Your eyes were shut as you swing your arms to punch the person but then you felt a hand grabbing your arm, making you freeze in your spot.
“Whoa! Easy there, cutie. What are you all feisty about?” a familiar voice spoke out.
Huh? That voice.
You opened your eyes to see….Jihoon laying on the floor beneath you, whereas his waist was trapped in between your thighs.
His hand was still holding on to your arm that was raised up earlier.
You furrowed your eyebrows. “Jihoon?? What are you doing here??”
“Aaahhh! I think I just saw something I shouldn’t be seeing!” You heard another voice screaming not far from you.
You lift your head to see who it was, and there it was….the rest of the familiar faces you know…all looking at both you and Jihoon with shocked looks.
  To be continued...

The Rose Prince (Pt.1)
-------------------------
There were two things Roman trusted in the twisted puppet show that was his life, two things he knew werent a fabricated stage of wired and strings. His brother Remus, and his own gut.
Remus was trustworthy because he was unpredictable, everything else in the castle was a code that could be cracked, a machine that could be exploited and forced into malfunction if dealt with properly.
Remus, however, was human. You could ask him for something and maybe he would give it to you, or spit in your face, the possibilities were endless. And that's what Roman liked about it all, about the uncertainty, the changes and shifts, it meant that things wouldnt stay dull and stale and boring.
Whereas if Remus hadnt been there, all Roman would be left with was the painfully obvious whirring of cogs and gears, the blinking red lights of cameras that broadcasted the prince's every move for all the world to see, stale conversations with machines who, despite Remus' best efforts, still seemed to slip up when referring to him correctly.
This was life for the Kingdom of Roses and Ice, princes and princesses were not to be raised around other people, for fear it might corrupt them. They were to be sent to a separate castle of strings and wires, and taught there how to be the perfect stone-faced statues, the picture of grace and nobility. The perfect bride and wife, or groom and husband, and the perfect king and ruler. The process lasted until they were eighteen, where upon its end they would be married off to the husband or wife of their parents choosing, or, should they fail in the task of perfection, risk being trapped under lock and gear forever.
Roman often wondered just how many of the castle's enchanted servants were once like him, regal, special, important. He wondered what they might have done to warrant such a curse, and if he'd already done the same thing.
But he worried no more for himself than he did for Remus, Remus was uncontrollable, a wild card if there ever had been and wild cards were not tolerated in the seat of the throne room.
He wondered if there had ever been royalty who tried to keep their children in the main castle, were they sent to die here to? Perhaps forced to bare another curse? This was Roman's least favorite topic to ponder, because then he started wondering if his parents had ever tried to rebel, whether they had tried to keep their children within the true castle, safe from the curse that would befall them should they fail in the task of perfection.
"Romaaaannnnnnn," Remus' voice drawled from nearby, but Roman couldn't quite focus on it.
"Hey snot-face I'm talking to you," and then he felt a sharp tap on the back of the head.
"Ow! Remus!" Roman whirled around in his seat, holding the spot which Remus had hit.
"You're thinking again, I was getting worried," Remus said with a laugh.
"Well what did you have to go and snap me out of it for!" Roman replied angrily.
"Because when you start thinking you usually reach the topic of mom and mom and then you start crying and I really dont think crying is a good way to spend our last day in this hellhole," Remus replied, Roman gave a start and rushed to the calendar.
And sure enough, there it was, June Fourth.
Remus could have gotten out two years earlier, but, in his words 'like hell I'm going to let Roman stay here by himself, you'll have to kill me first,'. Which did in fact not make Roman feel any better, but rather much worse, who knew what an open act of rebellion might mean.
"Well I guess I better get dressed then hm?" Roman said, almost whispering, as though he dared not believe it was truly time to leave, as though he thought they might stay in the false castle forever.
But soon enough they were standing on the steps of the true palace, a grandiose structure that looked as if it were made of snow and glass and ice. Roman smoothed down the hem of his skirt and straightened his back up as best he could, his binder felt tight around his chest, he wondered whether it was nerves or something else.
"You may enter the Palace of Frozen Rose," a voice said as the doors opened, Roman felt his stomach twisting like a worm on a hook. He looked up at Remus, who merely nodded as they walked inside.
If the outside was anything to marvel at, the inside was almost twice that. Statues of all sorts lined the walls, like larger than life music box dancers. The floors glistened with light reflected from the outside, creating a variety of colors across the floor.
But Roman couldnt focus on that now, he had to keep his head forward, poised on what was in front of him, gaze never lingering elsewhere, that was what made an obedient ruler.
"Good morning, Prince Roman, and Crown Prince Remus," Roman had to hold back a sigh of relief as his mother uttered the words. They'd passed, Remus was to be a a Crown Prince, the future king, and Roman was safe, all he had to do now was marry, and he'd be happy again.
"Good morning Queen Elizabeth and Queen Belladonna," Roman and Remus said in unison, Roman's voice carrying much louder than his brother's. Roman couldve sworn he saw the hint of a smile on his mothers' faces.
Almost as soon as the introductions began, the twins were shepherded to separate parts of the castle, no doubt to prepare themselves for the men selected by their mothers'.
Moments later Roman was dressed in a white sweater that hung off his shoulders, a red hoodie wrapped around his waist, skinny jeans, and white boots. Upon his face was glittering white eyeshadow and lipstick red as blood, and just like that he felt as though he'd never left the false castle, as though he was a puppet like those that had taken care of him for eighteen years. Of course,he didnt voice this, that wouldve been a foolish decision. So he did as told, walking down the hall, smiling and waving and watching as the ballroom inched closer and closer.
Roman felt the spotlight on himself as soon as he entered the room, like a bright sun meant just to reveal himself to the world.
"The Rose Prince has arrived to the court," Roman heard someone announce, the room went quiet, Roman tried desperately to find his brother, but could see nothing. He felt himself being pulled down the stairs, all eyes were on him, burning into his skin. He heard whispers, he knew they were about him.
Roman wasnt allowed on the dance floor for more than a minute or two, immediately being taken to the throne instead. Roman watched enviously as the other guests danced and partied as he was forced to sit and stare from a gilded silver throne.
"The Crown Prince of Thorns has arrived to the court," Roman looked up, and there was his brother, dressed in robes of jade and black, looking as though he'd very much like to bite the guards escorting him to his throne.
The party carried on as though no one seemed to realize the princes weren't joining in the festivities.
And one by one the guests began to leave, until there were exactly four men standing in front of the throne. Remus was beckoned to stand, and he did so, bowing slightly when he reached his full height.
The first man stepped forward, he was short, with light brown curls of hair that had shades of blue and pink flecked throughout. He had round-framed white glasses perched on his face, and his eyes were a contrast of white that faded to a shade of pink.
"Emile Picani, Prince of Orchards," said the voice that had announced Roman and Remus' arrival. Emile gave a slight bow and looked up at Remus as if expecting him to say something scornful. Remus merely smiled, Emile waited a few seconds before rushing to stand on one side of him.
The second boy was a slight bit taller than Emile, but nowhere near the height of Remus, with light brown skin and brown hair, his eyes were a deep shade of blue that made them seem almost black in color.
"Patton Boleyn, Prince of Gems and Jewels," the voice said, Patton rushed up to stand on the other side of Remus' throne. Roman was beginning to peice together what was going on.
He watched as the third man stepped forward, taller than almost everyone else in the room, with striking yellow eyes that stood out against his dark complexion and a black hat perched on his head, his face was covered in burns, yet it didnt not take away from his features, Roman could hardly keep his eyes off him.
"Janus Ryder, Crown Prince of Serpents," Janus approached Roman's throne, removed his hat, bowed, and placed a kiss on Roman's hand before going to stand next to his throne. Roman had to struggle not to blush furiously at the gesture.
The fourth and final man was dressed in vibrant midnight blue, with specks of white scattered throughout his dress like stars, and upon his face were round black glasses.
"Logan Sanders, Prince of Stars," the voice said, Logan gave a bow, crossing his legs as he did so, and took his place next to Roman's throne.
"After tomorrow, the Prince of Roses will be escorted to the kingdom of the Crown Prince of Serpents and Prince of Stars, the Prince of Orchards and Prince of Gems and Jewels will remain within the castle alongside the Crown Prince of Thorns," Roman felt faint, he'd only been there for a day and he was expected to leave soon after? And what of Remus? Were they never to see each other again?
But he kept a blank expression on his face as he and Remus repeating their instructions, the four other princes giving various reactions, the most common of which seemed to be worry.
Soon enough their suitors were taken from the room, and Roman and Remus were alone, until finally, they were allowed to their rooms.
And Roman screamed. Never before had he felt like this, confused, upset, trapped, in all the years he'd spent in that palace-shaped prison, he'd never felt as stuck as he was now. The only solace he could find was the walls of his room, where no creature except himself could hear. So he screamed, he screamed and cried and thrashed until he felt numb and limp and sick.
One day before he was to be married off to two men he'd never so much as looked at before.
One day before he would be separated from his brother, potentially forever.
One day before he became something worse than a puppet.
One day before he became a pawn in a game he was fully aware was being played.
Prince Roman did not dream that night, not even a nightmare. He simply slept, with fear and dread sinking into his stomach.

terushima yuuji x fem! reader
in which reader is the cute, shy nerd of johzenji high that terushima has for some reason set his eyes on. she lets him in on a little secret of hers, and the two make a bet, deciding the fate of their possible relationship
or alternatively, reader is cute but secretly is a little shit and terushima is head over heels for the duality
i wrote a proper one shot for once (even though it's super self-indulgent) and not a half-assed drabble, yay!
warning for cussing

Terushima really, really liked his tongue piercing. Hell, he loved it, because it a: made people flirt with him more, and b: made people kiss him more. The number of times people have told him his piercing makes them want to jump him couldn't be counted on his fingers, or his teammates' fingers, or the fingers on his whole team combined, which Terushima was very proud of and appreciated, thank you very much.
That being said, he did have one question.
   "What does it feel like?"
If there was a school with the most cliche stereotypes in its student body, it was Johzenji. The student athletes were the volleyball team, the popular kids were the basketball team, and every school has their self-proclaimed outcasts, with their limited freedom to be anti conformist due to the school dress code.
And of course, there were the smart, always a pleasure to have in class students: top of their classes, and focused only on their studies.
Lucky for you, you were one of the quiet, bookworm types, unsuspecting and safely away from any spotlight of attention, whereas others are accurately named "teacher's pet". More often than not, you were curled in the corner of the library or classroom, books open in front of you as you wrote neat, organized notes, color coded and highlighted. Yeah, people labeled you as a nerd most of the time, but if being a nerd meant actually having a normal high school life without the added stress of drama, which then made it easier for you to stay on top of your school work, which then would help you get into a good university, and then have a smooth ride from there on out, then whatever, guess you're a nerd now. Plus, it made your parents really proud of you and gave them bragging material to other parents, so if you really needed drama, your parents always knew what gossip floated around.
Terushima doesn't know why he even bothers. She isn't even his type! Though he doesn't exactly have a type that's more specific than hot, pretty girl. Yet there he was, stepping into his classroom, making a beeline for the desk in the corner. Others find it surprising that he was in the "nerd class", but Terushima knew that he was smarter than most, and wasn't some mindless idiot who knew nothing more than girls and their right hand. But that was a secret he kept to himself, because he liked having that trick up his sleeve, so when other students watched curiously as he walked into one of the top classrooms, he shrugged it off, telling them he wasn't sure why he was there, too.
You saw him approach from the corner of your eye, and inwardly sigh. Trying your best to focus on reading the notes in front of you and preparing for the history test you had in less than fifteen minutes, a shadow appeared over your notebook as an arm draped over the back of your chair.
"No book today?" a husky voice whispers directly into your ear, which would've gotten a reaction out of you if you were in a better mood.
"I don't need to take notes from a book if I already have notes, obviously," you said without looking up from your review, avoiding giving Terushima a satisfying amount of your attention. It was tiring, honestly. All you did was mind your business and study! You never stood out, and most people forget you even exist, at least until they need to copy notes they conveniently forgot to do themselves, to which you always said no. You did nothing to gain his, or anyone's attention, yet there he was, resting his cheek on your shoulder and turning to speak, his breath ghosting over your ear. His persistence was starting to get on your nerves, and you couldn't afford to get distracted from your education with him. You had to figure out a way to scare him off, fast.
"Aw come on baby, can't you at least let me see your pretty face?" He twirled a lock of your hair around his finger, trying and failing to get any sort of sign that you were even listening to him. Every other girl he flirted with fell for it, so why was it so addicting to him that you never did? Why is he trying so hard for you, why is he so pulled to you? To him, this was as real as soulmates could get without an actual red string manifesting in front of his eyes.
As usual, you ignored him. Just as he opened his mouth to sweet talk some more, the bell rang, telling him to get over to his seat or face the consequences.
"I'll see you later, baby." He straightened, sending a wink in your direction.
While most students filed out of the classroom, ready to either get home or attend club activities, Terushima strolled to the side of the door once everyone left.
   That is, everyone except you.
There you were, diligently jotting down something in your planner, slipping both your notebook and textbook into your backpack.
As you approached the door, he blocked your way, staring down at your shorter form with a charming smile on his face.
He took in your appearance, noting how your skirt wasn't short, but short enough to let his mind wander, showing him the exposed part of your legs between the hem of the skirt and the top of your socks, which came to your knees. The cream colored sweater you wore over your white blouse gave you a cute and innocent look, sweater paws included, and your olive jacket was tucked neatly over your arm, hanging by your side. He almost drooled at your oh-so-kissable lips, as pink as the ever present rosy liveliness on your cheeks. Your eyes stared up at him, like a kitten, in a way that made him want to coo, and had you not been glaring at him, he would've basked in the cuteness of your appearance, soft clothing and all.
"Please, just one kiss? Don't you want to feel my piercing for yourself?" he asked suggestively, smirking down at you.
"Not really. Do you?" You asked as you set your bag down on the nearest desktop.
He was taken aback by your response. "Well I- I mean- uh-"
You cut him off by tiptoeing, pressing your lips on his. Oh damn, they were soft as hell. Yeah, this is why he was so attracted to you. Yeah, he'd like to get your kisses way more often. He even almost forgot what you had just said.
As he licked your bottom lip for permission, he then realized what you meant.
   Clink.
You pulled away, snickering at the confused look on his face. You pulled a childish face at him, pulling at your eye and sticking your tongue out at him, confirming his suspicions.
In the middle of your tongue sat a shiny silver bead, the twin to the one in his own mouth.
"Nobody's gonna believe you," you taunted, slinging your bag over your shoulder and walking out of the classroom as he stepped to the side distractedly, dumbfounded, obviously still processing what just happened.
   Then it struck him.
   Well, shit.
"I'm telling you man, she has a tongue piercing too!"
"Yeah, whatever dude. A girl like her? The most she's ever done is probably truth or dare in middle school, and she'd only pick truth!"
Terushima had to admit that he used to think the same of you, based on the way you wore mainly comfy sweaters and kept quiet,  speaking softly and rarely. "Bobata, I'm serious. We kissed! I even saw it!" He insisted, yet as the words came out of his mouth, he himself didn't know if they were true or not. If it did happen, then you were right, nobody was believing him, not even himself.
"Dude, she probably doesn't even know how to kiss," Bobata laughed as he walked away, joining a two vs. two match.
Terushima had walked into volleyball practice after he got over what had just happened, though it still felt like some fever dream, and the coach and Hana had gotten mad at him for being fifteen minutes late, and he had to warm up by himself before he could play a match. He would've skipped it, but then they would've killed him for being so careless, and he didn't want to face their combined wrath again.
"Nah, that was a hella good kiss," Terushima whispered to himself, staring at the ball in his hands, "but was it real?".
   "Can I have another? Please?"
You almost laughed at the way he was asking you, like a child asking his mom for another cookie or something. "I didn't give you anything," you said, tilting your head.
Terushima stared. "Yes you did! You gave me the best damn kiss I ever had!"
"I haven't even had my first kiss yet," you lied straight through your teeth, pretending to look surprised yet embarrassed.
"Nobody calls a kiss like that their first kiss."
"I really don't know what you're talking about. Now, stop bothering me." You flushed, proud of the fact that he basically called you one of the best kissers, but you played it off as being embarrassed that he was making a big deal out of your so called "first kiss", or rather, the lack thereof.
He could see the genuine innocence in your eyes, which frustrated him to no end. Either it was real, or he was on drugs. He hoped it was the former.
   "Then explain your tongue piercing!"
"Tongue piercing? I would never get something as wild as that. I barely got ear piercings!" You looked scandalized, like a strict mother's embarrassing teenage years being exposed to Helen and all her kids at the PTA meeting.
"You have one! And how else would I know if you didn't kiss me!"
"Terushima, I really don't know what you're talking about, and frankly, I'm worried for you." You looked at him, concern in your eyes. "You're in this class with me because you're smart, and as far as I know, you're not flunking out. So why are you saying all this nonsense?"
Terushima didn't know how to feel. On one hand, he felt like preening, taking in your praise at his hidden intelligence, but on the other, he was frustrated that you kept calling the truth nonsense.
"Fine! If you don't have a piercing, show me."
"I'm not a child; I'm not going to stick my tongue out at you."
"If you don't, you're admitting defeat."
"Fine! If you insist," You relented, sticking your tongue out at him.
To his dismay, there was nothing there, no bead, no flash of something shiny.
He looked you in the eyes.
   Well, shit.
"Am I tripping or did yesterday actually happen?"
"Of course yesterday happened, it was yesterday," you sighed, looking at Terushima, not in the mood for more of his antics. Once again, it was you and him in the empty classroom, the campus deserted. Just yesterday, your camera broke, and you turned it over in your hands before slipping it into your bag. So long, photography club.
   "You know what I mean!"
An idea popped into your head. "If you mean this," you purred, lightly pushing on his chest with one hand until his back hit the wall. You used your other hand to pull him down by his blazer, placing your lips on his.
   Clink.
"Then yes. Just in case you needed to ring a bell."
"You damn tease. Why are you doing this?" Terushima's eyes kept flitting to your lips. Who would've guessed that he was also into tongue piercings?
"At first, I wanted to drive you away by telling you something no one's gonna believe, so you'd go crazy or something. Now, I think I'm having a little bit of fun with it," you said, swiping your tongue across your bottom lip. Terushima watched as the silver bead flashed, reflecting the light coming from the windows.
   "You put it back!"
"Of course I did, what's the point of getting a piercing just for it to close up? Now, Teru, how about we make a bet?" You stood on your tiptoes, whispering into his ear. There was no way he could've suppressed the shiver that ran down his back. Well fuck him, you were pushing his buttons in all the right ways, a stark contrast from the cold shoulder you've been giving him the past two weeks. Hell, he was loving it, fully pulled in by you and your addictive flirting.
"Depends on the bet," he whispered back into your ear, lightly kissing it. He held your waist in his hands, humming appreciatively at your sharp intake of air as he pulled you closer to him.
You backed down. "If you convince at least one person that I've got a tongue piercing, I'll do a favor for you, no questions asked." You wrapped your arms around his waist, resting your chin on his chest.
Oh god, Terushima was sure he ascended to a higher plane of existence. If his eyes were cameras, he would've taken a dozen pictures of you hugging him, staring up at him with those adorable kitten eyes, chin on his chest, his chest! He couldn't stop himself from cooing, "Awe, well when you're looking up at me like that, how can I say no?"
You smiled, amping up your cute factor as soon as you realized it was working in your favor. "Then if you win, I…?"
"You go out with me," Terushima said simply, to nobody's surprise.
"And if I win, you stop bothering me. Deal?"
"Deal." Both of you knew that if you won, Terushima wouldn't follow through with his penalty, but well, at least he'll make an effort.
"Seal it with a kiss?" He knew he sounded desperate, but honestly he was: desperate to kiss you again, to feel your lips on his, to hear the soft sound of your piercings meeting, to finally call you his.
You didn't answer, instead pulling him down again to give him a light peck on the lips.
"Bye!" You slipped your backpack over your shoulders, waving a hand in the air as you looked over your shoulder.
"Wait, not like that! I want a real one!" Terushima called, running out the door, watching as you walked away and out of sight.
   Well, shit.
He saw you sitting a few tables away, chatting away with your friends around you. When you caught his eye, you stuck your tongue out at him, taunting him with the bead that only you, your friends, and him knew the existence of. He did the same, watching as the two of you started making faces at each other, each one worse than the last, like elementary school rivals.
"Bobata, when I tap your knee, you have to look where I'm looking, okay?" Terushima whispered, a plan to win the bet in his head.
Bobata looked at him weirdly, "Sure dude, whatever you say."
Grinning, Terushima stuck his tongue out more, making sure his piercing was as clear as day. When he saw you open your mouth to do the same, he quickly tapped Bobata's knee.
"Dude, I don't even know where you're looking. There's nothing there."
"What?" He exclaimed, watching helplessly as you turned around, piercing hidden yet again.
"There's just the back of some girl's head."
It was then that Terushima realized your friend sat across from you, effectively shielding you from prying eyes.
Eyes that would've sealed the deal for him, in his favor.
Terushima turned to Bobata, devastation clear on his face.
"You've got to be kidding me."
"Guys, why don't you just believe me?"
"Believe what?" Futamata looked at Terushima, confused.
"He's been going on and on about how the girl that sits in the corner all quiet has a tongue piercing. A tongue piercing! He's gone crazy," Bobata said, leaning back in his chair.
"It's true! I was gonna show you earlier but some girl was in the way!"
"Why would she have a tongue piercing in the first place, and why would you know?" Futamata asked.
"Because it's the only piercing nobody can see unless you show them, so she only told me about it because she knew nobody would believe me! Like you two right now!" Terushima exclaimed. "How often do you guys see my piercing everyday?"
"All the damn time," Futamata and Bobata said in unison.
"Okay, how often do you see it when I'm not going around showing it off?"
"Now that I think about it, I never see it during class the way I can always see your ear piercings," Bobata mused.
"That's because it's in his mouth," Futamata quipped, hiding his laugh behind his hand.
"Exactly! Hers is in her mouth too!" Terushima insisted.
"Why would she show you in particular, though?"
"'Cause I've been trying to get with her and she always rejected me and she got tired of it but now she's always flirting but nobody believes it and it drives me insane but I finally have a chance if I can just prove it to somebody!" Terushima ranted, exasperation setting in.
"Dude, you gotta realize how unbelievable your story sounds right now. You're basically saying Hermione Granger from Harry Potter had a tongue piercing," Futamata pointed out, Bobata nodding in agreement.
"Okay, but Hermione Granger was badass."
"Yeah, you're right," Futamata said. "But that's not the point! The thing is, all she does is study, take notes, pass classes, and get the highest grades! She's just so, ordinary. She seems so innocent and naive."
"Yeah, but so was Hermione until we found out she was cool as hell," Terushima said.
   "Good point," Futamata added.
"Fine, fine. If I see it, I'll believe it, one hundred percent. Deal?" Bobata relented, watching as Futamata repeated after him.
   "Deal."
Terushima leaned over the desk next to yours, looking down at you. He watched as you looked up at him, memories of yesterday flashing in his head.
"Can you watch me play volleyball?"
"What do you mean?" You asked, unsure of what he was asking of you. There were no games, and the Interhigh Prelims were already over, so what could you watch?
"After school. Sit and watch us during practice, you can even help Hana if you want," Terushima offered.
You looked at him skeptically. Something about his request felt off, like he had an ulterior motive, but you didn't know for sure, which is why you answered the way you did.
   "Sure, I guess."
You stood outside the gym doors, shuffling your feet from side to side. Just ten minutes earlier, you were wrapping up some notes and flashcards you were using for an upcoming literature test as Terushima walked out the door, waving goodbye. Back then, you thought nothing of it, deciding to visit their practice after they were done. Now, you regretted that, because you had to open the doors alone, by yourself, and interrupt whatever they were doing.
Basically, you had to bring attention to yourself, which you hated in the first place, and knowing how chaotic the Johzenji volleyball team can be, you weren't sure you'd live to tell the tale.
Sighing, you braced yourself, placing a hand on the door handle.
   Three.
   Two.
   One.
You pulled open the door, timidly peeking inside. As soon as the sound of the door opening echoed throughout the gym, the sounds of sneakers and bumps quieted. It was as if everything has paused, freeze frame. A ball in the air fell to the floor, bouncing away.
And the whole team was staring at you.
"Hey! You made it!" Terushima called out as his face lit up.
"Um, hello. Terushima told me to come and watch the practice," you explained softly, glancing around the gym.
"Oh, great! Come over here," their manager, who you recognized to be Hana, said, waving a hand at you. You dropped your bag by the door before making your way over.
"Hi, I'm Hana Misaki, the third year manager, and this is our coach, Anabata Takaaki," Hana introduced, motioning to the coach. He waved politely, saying, "Nice to meet you."
Someone tapped you on the shoulder, and as you turned around, you were met with the face of a girl, obviously a first year, looking down at the floor.
"I'm Ryuna Kuribayashi, and I'm the first year manager," she said, shyly looking up at you.
"Nice to meet you Ryuna," you said warmly before introducing yourself as well, watching as she gave you a gentle smile in response.
"So, what brings you here? Other than that idiot Terushima," Hana asked, throwing a glare towards Terushima's direction. As if he had super hearing, he turned around, pouting, just as one of his opponents, number eleven, sent a ball in the air, landing on his head.
You stifled a laugh as you overheard him complain loudly. "Nothing else, he just told me to come by, and since I had nothing to do, I had no reason to decline," you answered sheepishly, rubbing the back of your head.
"So you have no club activities?"
"Yeah, I was part of the photography club but my camera broke and I haven't had the time to either fix it or replace it, so I've basically just been a placeholder."
"Well, how about you become a manager for these bunch of crazy kids? Soon, you'd be the third year manager, and I'd really appreciate it if we continued having two managers, just in case they decide to tear Ryuna apart, since once their tournament is over, I'm leaving," Hana sighed, watching as Ryuna shrugged her shoulders. You looked at the team, playing two versus two matches, jumping and yelling like madmen, then back at Ryuna, who was watching fondly, albeit a bit worried.
"Yeah, okay. I can see why you can't trust them with one manager." You gestured at them with your head, just as Terushima jumped in the air, yelling his lungs out.
"Great! If you come here for a second I can give you a form to fill out, and- oh wait. Do you know anything about volleyball?" Hana asked. "It's just one of the things I'm supposed to ask you, since it's a volleyball club and all."
"Yeah, I played in middle school," you assured.
"Great! Here," Hana said, handing you a form. Fishing a pen out of her pocket, you took it gratefully before putting the paper against the wall, filling it out.
"Then that settles it! I'll call a break and tell them the news." Hana turned to the coach, waiting for him to finish correcting one of the teammates. She tapped him on the shoulder and asked for a time out. The coach blew the whistle, and Terushima called, "Alright!"
Once everyone had gotten water and a towel, Hana called for everyone's attention. "Everyone, this is (L/N) (Y/N)! She's a second year, but most of you know that because I hear a fly keeps buzzing around her." Hana sent a dirty look at Terushima, who put his hands up and stuck his tongue out, guilty as charged. "She's becoming our third manager to take my place once I leave," the team whined, obviously going to miss her, "so when next year comes around, we'll have a third year and second year manager. Since most of you will be graduating with (Y/N), when Ryuna is a third year, we may only need one manager, since she might be actually looking after a volleyball team, not a group of overgrown kids." The team protested, unknowingly proving even more so that they were a childish bunch. "Yeah, yeah, I'm just kidding. Everyone, welcome (Y/N)!"
"Welcome to the team!" The team chorused, jumping in the air, reminding you of a certain redhead you used to go to middle school with.
"Thank you," you said, bowing slightly.
   "Alright, back to work!"
"So I heard you're becoming a manager? Why, you need to keep tabs on your man?" Terushima sidled up to you, towel around his neck, water bottle drained.
"No, I just feel bad for Ryuna having to deal with you all the time," you replied, looking over your shoulder at Ryuna handing out water bottles to the crowd of teammates around her, looking overwhelmed before Hana came and smacked them in the head.
"Well then, meet some of the team. Hey, Bobata! Futamata!" Terushima called to numbers 2 and 3.
"Hey, I'm Bobata Kazuma," number 2 said as he jogged over, tipping his head slightly.
"I'm Futamata Takeharu," number 3 introduced as well, nodding towards you.
"And I'm number one!" Terushima yelled proudly, with you looking unamused.
"So who's the captain? I bet it's Futamata, he seems better than you, Terushima," you said, trying to make fun of and get a reaction out of Terushima, and it worked.
"No! I'm the captain, number one!" Terushima insisted, pulling at his practice jersey.
"Fine, fine. Do you guys really only play two on two matches?" You asked, looking at the three of them. Damn, they towered over you. No wonder Ryuna was overwhelmed earlier, had you still been your little first year self, you too would've been intimidated.
"Yeah!" Bobata answered proudly, "It's what makes us the 'party team'."
"But volleyball is six on six…" you trailed off.
"Well yeah, but doing two on two makes it more competitive," Futamata pointed out.
"Yeah, but when game time comes around, you all will be running into each other, because two suddenly tripled." You rolled your eyes, already seeing them crash into each other like bumper cars.
"But when that happens, you'lll come and save us, right?" Terushima asked, looking at you with puppy eyes.
"I guess…" you grumbled, not wanting to indulge Terushima.
"Aw, c'mon! You'll help us with anything, right?" Bobata pulled the same act, dodging as Terushima tried to elbow him.
"Just say it! If you say it, we'll believe it!" Futamata added, catching on to something, something you were suspicious of.
"You're being awfully insistent," you looked at them dubiously, raising an eyebrow.
"Just say it! 'As your manager, I'll help you with anything'," Terushima said, speaking slowly. As he spoke, his piercing glinted in the gym's lighting, the sun already setting, unable to provide its sunlight.
   "No, that's weird."
   "Just do it!"
   "No!"
"Please?" All three of them chorused.
"Fine! As your manager, I'll help you with anything," you relented, not noticing the incredulous look on Bobata's and Futamata's faces.
"Say it slower, just in case I heard wrong," Terushima suggested, looking at you evilly.
Seeing as you were in no position to refuse, you did so, "As your manager, I'll- oh." Your face fell as you realized why they made you repeat those exact words.
When you said 'I'll', your piercing was out in the open, exposed to two of Terushima's friends, who were looking at you with disbelief written across their faces. You mentally smacked yourself for overlooking the fact that when Terushima said it, his piercing was visible, too.
"I believe the bet has come to an end? And the winner is?..." Terushima said slyly, looking like that cat that caught the canary.
"You…" you mumbled, unwilling to admit it.
   "What? I couldn't hear you."
"You!" You huffed, looking to the side.
"Wait, bet? I thought you were just trying to not go insane," Bobata said as Futamata agreed with him.
"You see, if I was able to prove she had such a piercing to at least one person, I'd be able to do this." He snaked an arm around your waist, pulling you into his side. "And you, Bobata, Futamata, make two people."
"So what did you win?" Futamata asked, not following.
"I won this one right here," Terushima replied happily, stepping to the side to hug you from behind.
"Everyone!" Terushima suddenly yelled, waiting for everyone's attention. "Meet my girl, (L/N) (Y/N)!" Terushima declared proudly, leaning back and lifting you up into the air from the waist, peeking over your side and snickering as you protested loudly.
   "Hey! Put me-"
You were cut off by the team's wolf whistles and yells, their cries loud enough to be heard miles away as they all jumped in the air excitedly. Do they ever stop jumping? Even Hana and Ryuna were clapping, fond smiles on their faces.
Accepting your fate, you crossed your ankles, holding on to Terushima's arms for dear life.
"Thank god you're in good shape," you whispered, squeezing his bicep.
   Terushima grinned. "Like it?"
"Love it," you rolled your eyes as he preened, hugging you even tighter, before putting you down.
"Guess I got my girl after all," Terushima said as those who overheard cheered softly for him.
"Yeah, yeah, it took you three weeks and a bet to get little old me."
"Yeah, but little old you tricked everyone by having a tongue piercing, so I wonder, what else are you hiding behind that innocent façade?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," you said, crossing your arms and petulantly looking to the side.
"Well, can little miss innocent give me the hottest kiss of my life?" He said mischievously, eyes sparkling at you.
"Whatever you say, mister handsome-as-hell," you smiled, leaning up as he bent down, your lips meeting in the middle.
If it was even possible, the team got louder, and even the managers were whooping for you, relieved that you finally got together and happy because you two made a really cute couple.
Terushima smiled into the kiss, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you even closer.
   Clink.

Mountain Con
Article by David Miller
What are your names and what do you do in the group? Swede: My name is Swede and I play guitar, pedal steel, and regular guitar and banjo. Jim: My name is Jim and I’m the singer and I play a nylon gut string guitar. I play harmonica and I write some songs. Ben: My name is Ben and I play keyboards. Mike: My name is Mike and I play drums. Dustin: My name is Dustin. I do all the turntable and sampler work on stage and the ‘jack of all that’s needed that’s not musical. Pierre was in Montana this day and he is the bass player and genius engineer and as Dustin calls him, “the mad scientist.” You all combine music technology with pop song writing. What is the spark that gets a track going for this band? Jim: Well, a lot of times they start as Folk songs. We’re experimenting more with building loops and experimenting more with what might happen accidentally. Usually we start with songs that can be played with and acoustic guitar, lay it down with a click track and build it up from there. For this next record, we’re experimenting a little bit with going the reverse route to mix things up. When do the samples and loops come in? Jim: Our studio and writing process are inseparable, really, but after we get some chords and lyrics we start our insane process that is too complicated to get into. We won’t bore you with all the details today. But after much obsessing we finally get something that we are happy with and we hope other people are happy with too. What’s happening in the world right now that become topics or themes when you write? Swede: God, open the news paper. Watch CNN. Jim: Our lyrical side of things is usually existing in a different universe than the musical side. The musical side is an exploration of sounds, whereas the lyrical side is more personal. Lyrically, I’ve been dealing what I call, ‘conspicuous appropriation’ or a collage aesthetic that coveys a picture of something that’s happening today. When did Mountain Con start and what was the original idea? Jim: Four of us were in a band in Missoula, Montana where all of us except for Dustin are from. It was a more contemporary early nineties guitar driven rock band kind of thing. We moved out to Seattle when we were 18 and thought that within a year we’d be, ya know, big rock stars or whatever. Basically the whole thing just kind of fell apart. But we regrouped here in about 1998 and it gave us the ability to really rethink how we made “Rock Music.” Mike: We also really liked the beat approach to hip hop and the way that felt, so we experimented with taking Bob Dylan songs or rock songs and applying that to say, Public Enemy and basically trying to get that beat stuck into something that doesn’t fit. Jim: Yeah, that got the gears turning. I mean, when we first started out we didn’t even know how to make a loop. Now we can just about have our way with anything that we want. Tell me about the title “Dusty Zero’s, Dirty Ones.” Dustin: That title really puts together the two worlds of folksy rock and digital production, I mean you got the whole binary code thing that is at the heart of digital based production and sampling, and the human element of what all of do instrumentally and what styles we play. With the declining industry sales and the threatening legal strategies being implemented by record label, how do you guys feel is the best way to get your music to the public? Swede: Well, it almost got to the point with our dealings in LA that we fed up and just wanted to put out the last record on the internet. Dustin: We did the whole shopping thing (delivering demo’s of your music to record labels) with the record and it was brutal. I mean, unless you have a huge fan base and a lot of record sales to show on your own, people in the industry aren’t taking any chances. They got enough problems as it is. So we went to all the local record stores and radio stations and we’ve been getting a lot of great support from them. KNDD has been really helpful to us and KEXP as well. But Seattle and Portland are the only real markets that this record has seen. Jim: The only National grasp that record has achieved is over electronic means and the internet. Dustin: We just got on iTunes three weeks ago and that alone took months because we didn’t have a record company backing us and it’s hard to get the attention of these large companies on your own. Give me your top 3 or 4 hip hop production influences. Mike: I’m into the old school East Coast thing. Like Tribe Called Quest, and Public Enemy. Dustin: Erik B and Rakim. Jim: Digable Planets. Mike: Currently, I like Mos Def’s stuff. He’s got some great stuff goin’ on. But definitely not any top 40 stuff, or at least rhythmically to me that stuff is less interesting. Who would be your dream artist to open for or play with? Dustin: Beck! He would be the dream first choice obviously. Jim: The Dust Brothers are huge. Dustin: We’d love to open for the Roots and Interpol. What sets you guys apart from the rest of the crowd? Swede: We get a lot of comments on, the slide (guitar). A lot of people come to our shows and don’t even know what the hell the thing is. Dustin: If someone knows what they’re looking at on stage, they see a slide, an old Hammond organ, keyboards and drums, and tucked in the back is turntables and samplers. We have such a unique set up live that we just stand out by what we bring to the table. You all have a very pop oriented sound. The Stranger here in Seattle even commented that you had a “cookie cutter M-TV” sound. Where does that come from? Jim: I think that comes from growing up in a small town where, the only outside access was the mass media. So, it’s like it’s in our DNA when we want to arrange a song, we instinctively gravitate to the classics. It wasn’t even until we were 18 or so living here that we had any access to alternative music. Sometimes we hear criticism for that, but we can’t help ourselves and we have no interest in making music that we are not. It’s what’s true to us. What social or political elements do you champion in your music? Dustin: We like to combine social consciousness with good grooving’ music. Really we make party music, but one piece we’re proud of is a song that is a mixture of a beat that sounds kind of like something Outcast would do, and we took some lyrical influence from John Lennon’s “Gimmie Some Truth” and made a song that we really resonate with consciously. Also it was made in time for the elections and we felt very strongly about that outcome in that we didn’t want to see four more years of lying and cheating as demonstrated by the current administration. Tell me about the name “Mountain Con.” Jim: Our Grandfathers worked in one of the largest open copper mines in the country in Butte Montana. It was called “Mountain Consolidated” and we felt like it was a nice big powerful name for a band. Our music is a mine. We dig through the sedimentary layers of culture and make modern music, so we’re a mining project in our own right. For a closing thought, I want to go around and ask each of you this same question: If you could go back in time, what musical movement would you like to visit for a weekend? Dustin: I’d probably go back to the Bronx in the early eighties. I, mean, just the musical invention of plugging in two turntables into a light post on the street and creating the greatest musical art form since rock. Mike: Even though it doesn’t necessarily inform my rhythmic influence with this band, I’d like to go back to late ‘70’s London and be around the punk energy as well as the fashion and design movements happening then. Ben: There were a couple of weeks in the early ‘70’s when Pink Floyd rented a room and started jamming on E minor to A, which became “Breath” from Dark Side of the Moon. I would have liked to be around to see that. Jim: Did they have the Lear Jet in ’66? Because I need to bounce around to a few places if I’m only getting a weekend on this on. But there was like a competition between the Beach Boys and the Beatles and Bob Dylan around that time for the most amazing pop album of all time really. It’s like the history of pop music was moving into a gigantic focal point and after which rock music just broke out into a million shards. So, I’d need a Lear Jet to go from LA, to London, and back to Woodstock NY. Swede: I would have to say Hamburg Germany in 1959 with the Beatles playing at the Kaiser Keller and the Star Club back when they were all hopped up on speed and were still a punk rock band.

#OscarsSoDiverse: My 2017 Oscars Predictions
Tumblr media
How could I begin telling you how positively different this year’s Oscar nominees are without being too dramatic? Well, I guess I would begin by saying: diversity. Yes, they have recovered quite a bit from 2016’s controversial #OscarSoWhite extravaganza and, being an avid Academy Awards fan since 2010, the year where a foreign language film won the prized Golden Statuette for Best Picture, The Artist (2012), I have been defending the Oscars from all the criticism and let me tell you: this year, I never had so much to say to defend it since the Oscars did not need the defense; they made it themselves. “How so?” one might ask. First, they have started inviting new members for the Academy, sending out more than 500 invitations to esteemed young and new actors such as Andrew Garfield (Spiderman), song writers such as Sia Furler (Zootopia), and foreign language film directors László Nemes (Son of Saul). This move was made after the criticism of the Oscars being only a “gentleman’s club”, literally, because almost 75% - 85% of the members of the Academy are, to quote the naysayers, “white old men,” hence the recruitment of a fresh new batch of women, young filmmakers, and people of color. Such a ploy paved way for a diversity in the nominee line-up: more women represented (most notable is Joi McMillon, the first ever woman, and a woman of color at that, to ever be nominated for Best Editing for the heartfelt movie Moonlight), and more people of color (Ava DuVernay for 13th). True enough, the nomination for most is not made only to show that the Oscars are noticing them, but that most of these people are also exhibiting great craftmanship in their particular field of expertise. And that, I guess, is how I begin my 2017 Oscar Predictions: an ode to the minorities now having a chance at getting the elusive and exclusive Golden Oscar Statuette.
Enough about that, I will get right into it:
Make-up and Hairstyling
Less is More, a saying most people use in their daily lives; a quote which earned a second nomination for Eva von Bahr and Love Larson (first in the work for The 100-Year old Man Whou Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared) in their minimalistic work in A Man Called Ove (also nominated for best foreign language film) making the effect of a man losing hair and simple design through makeup as it competes with Suicide Squad and Star Trek Beyond: both big-budgeted Hollywood blockbusters whose prosthetics is extremely detailed and delicately applied. Who won me over? I think my soft spot for underdogs made me call it out: I go for the less-budgeted one.
Would Win: A Man Called Ove
Could win: Star Trek Beyond
Costume Design
Period films and fantasy films dominates this category and this year is not an exception. Period films Jackie, Allied, and Florence Foster Jenkins made it as well as J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, whose costume were made by Oscar quasi-favorite Colleen Atwood, known for her work in Into the Woods. The surprise here, at least for me, considering the many period dramas and fantasy features came out last year, was La La Land. I don’t know about your choice but mine would have to be Jackie because of its well-woven Pink Chanel Dress, resembling the actual one Jackie Kennedy wore on the day JFK was shot in their car. What comes close is Fantastic Beasts because, well, of Colleen Atwood and her reputation.
Would win: Jackie
Could win: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Sound Mixing
The sound categories confuse people so here’s how I go about explaining it: sound editing is the making of the sound heard, sound mixing is how it is synced/synchronized to the scenes. For this one, I went to vote La La Land for its hypnotic tap dancing sequence and, conclusively, almost every scene that had made use of those neat sound mixing. I must admit I almost went swinging my vote for Arrival for its sequences of encounter with the other-worldly creatures, but I didn’t.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Arrival
Sound Editing
Ah yes. The sound made for film. I almost thought I would go for the simplicity of the sounds in La La Land yet there’s something about war films that takes you on a different light, hence my vote goes to Hacksaw Ridge.
Would Win: Hacksaw Ridge
Could win: La La Land
Music (Original Song)
Most people ask me why this category is here, well, it just is, I guess. This year’s feud is between two musicals: La La Land, two song nominations, and Moana, one song nomination.
Would Win: How Far I’ll Go (Moana)
Could Win: Audition (Fools Who Dream) (La La Land)
Music (Original Score)
La La Land could have swept through this category easily, having Passengers as one of its contenders but here comes the unexpected-expected Jackie, whose score was made by Mica Levi, notable for her work in Under the Skin. There is kind of a difficult choice between a musical score of an actual musical and a drama because on the one hand, you have a performed one, on the other you have one that lacks lyrics but contributes to the overall feeling and emotion of  scenes.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Jackie
Documentary Feature
The diversity in this category is spectacular: 3 of the 5 films nominated are directed or written by African-American directors and writers. One of those writers is a prominent figure in the formation of novels and literary pieces that center of African-American issues, James Baldwin (I am Not Your Negro). Another is the longest feature film to ever be nominated for an Oscar (467 mins or 7 hours), O.J.: Made in America, and one is directed the biggest snobs of the Oscars 2915 Ava DuVernay for her amazing directing for the powerful Selma, 13th. The biggest contenders are, without bias, are the 3 said films namely I Am Not Your Negro, 13th, and O.J.: Made in America. That is not to say that Fire at Sea and Life, Animated, are not great but their story, although they are equally heartfelt and sweet, is overpowered by the former. For me, the film 13th makes the more gritty and eye-opening experience for me as an individual: it’s not even about the black community anymore at some point; to me, it’s about how we view ourselves as people of a community and the role we play in it, how the institution of the powerful continues to oppress the powerless and strips them off of any of it. Moreso, it analyzes the US in its mass incarceration of criminals, mostly African-American, and how, in its history, specially during the Jim Crow, it is able to procure slavery in this particular form (I know it sounds like a propaganda but trust me, it’s not. This film is available for viewing at Netflix if you want to check it out). I am Not Your Negro is poetic for me and I don’t think the Academy would go for something like it; O.J.:Made in America is equally gritty as the 13th but it’s really too long for me. This battle is a true nail-biter.
Would Win: 13th
Could Win:  O.J.:Made in America
Animated Feature
The frontrunners for this category are neck-and-neck in their fight as there are three of them. Zootopia tackled the sensitive issue of racism and community bias. Moana feels so close to people living in the Pacific (and the animation of the sea and beaches are beautiful). Kubo and the Two Strings is so beautifully animated in stop-motion that it was nominated for best visual effects. “Do I go for story or do I go for animation?” that is the question. I guess it’s high time that Laika win for their stop-motion animated feature.
Would Win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Could Win: Moana or Zootopia
Foreign Language Film
You know what wins me over almost every single time in this category? COMEDIES! And Toni Erdmann (Germany) is one! Yes. I have nothing to say other than it made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants (kidding). However, I have to also praise The Salesman (Iran) and A Man Called Ove (Sweden) for its dramatic takes, and Land of Mine (Denmark) for a heart-crushing experience. I would also like to acknowledge the first ever film to be nominated from the Oceania, Tanna (Australia)!!!!(I’m just sad that Elle from France was not nominated in this category but I’m glad for its best actress nomination)
Would win: Toni Erdmann (Germany)
Could win: The Salesman (Iran)
Visual Effects
The Jungle Book vs. Kubo and the Two Strings is how I see this category running its course, although the other nominees, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Deepwater Horizon, and Doctor Strange are not to be missed. I decided to choose the realistic talking, breathing, and running wildlife animals of The Jungle Book over the gorgeous visuals of Kubo.
Would Win: The Jungle Book
Could win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Production Design
Like the costume design, this one is heralded massively by the period films and fantasy films. This year is quite different, as one period frontrunner, Hail, Caesar! is challenged by the beloved musical La La Land. The former boasts spectacular set design as it shows the peak of Hollywood’s film industry: the big-budgeted studio-shot films during the mid to late 20th century whereas the later focuses on the matching of costume design to the setting with matching light engineering. As much as I love the set design of Hail, Caesar! since I’m a film enthusiast, I would have to put my hands down for La La Land’s neat and palatable serving.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Hail, Caesar!
Editing
Three films are winning me over here: Moonlight, its sharp editing that showed the three stages in the life of one black gay man, Hacksaw Ridge, its bold cut that showed a blood-bathed battlefield, or La La Land, its sleek edit that showed beautiful musical numbers one after the other. I went for THE musical.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Moonlight
Cinematography
If only Lion did not win that American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award for Achievement in Cinematography, I would have easily went for La La Land. I thought for sure it would win now I’m having second thoughts since ASC is like the best predictor for this Oscar category. Not to set aside, also, is Silence and its picturesque visuals perfect for a somber visual experience. I hope I set my heart to the right choice. What I loved about La La Land is that it incorporated cinemascope, reminiscent of the mid-to-late 20th century camerawork and mixed it with contemporary digital cinematic maneuvers.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Lion
*Side note: here now, are the major awards of the Oscars*
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Moonlight or Hidden Figures? Both great. Both spectacular. Both impactful. Do I go for the coming of age story of a gay black man or the true-to-life story that presents the African-American women behind NASA who are responsible for the test flights back in the time where there still was Jim Crow?
Would win: Moonlight
Could Win: Hidden Figures
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Among the nominees, I really had so much praise for 20th Century Women but, admittedly, it all boils down to Manchester by the Sea and La La Land. Sure you have two great stories but which one garners the coveted prize? I like Manchester because it is timid but painful since it tackles the story of death; another thing about it is that it made the characters feel so three-dimensional: like you know them as people, something far too few films have ever accomplished. On the other hand, I like La La Land because it placed a familiar story in a familiar setting yet still summon what’s so different and peculiar about it: the enigma of the story that happens in it, the sheer coldness, the sparkling sun, and yes, the interplay of the characters. In a perfect world, I hope Manchester by the Sea gets it, however, the Academy loves La La Land so much they might just let it steal this one.
Would win: Manchester by the Sea
Could win: La La Land
Best Supporting Actor
Michael Shannon has been the surprise here as he portrayed a cancer-stricken police officer. However, much has been said and much has been heard, Mahershala Ali for his performance in Moonlight is put on the pedestal and the only one seen to garner this prize. To me, Ali’s performance lingers long after he’s gone in the film: he only appears around the first 15-20mins but the impact Ali and his character portrayal has left behind trembles and creates a rippled effect that is felt even long after the film finishes, and what a stellar sighting that is.
Would (and should) win: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Could win (in an imprefect world): Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)
Best Supporting Actress
No one can take this prize away from Emmy and Tony award-winning character actress Viola Davis and her heartfelt portrayal of an African-American mother, wife, and companion.
Would win: Viola Davis (Fences)
Potential Spoiler: Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)
Best Actor
Oh my! The true nail-biter of this year’s category is this one. Casey Affleck or Denzel Washington. I hate saying it but Affleck did a better job than Washington. The reason why there is so much fuss because of the allegations of sexual harassment by Affleck which affects his chance at winning the Oscar. The main reason, in my humble opinion, why Washington is the one in the two frontrunners is the line delivery (since the lines are almost 24 sentences long because the film is an adaptation of a theatre play).
Would win (hopefully): Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Could win:  Denzel Washington (Fences)
Best Actress
Isabelle Huppert played an assaulted corporate executive, Emma Stone played a romantic actress-wannabe, Meryl Streep played Florence Foster Jenkins, a music enthusiasts who believes she hits the perfect notes even though she doesn’t, Ruth Negga played an African-American woman shunned for her marriage with a white man (back in the Jim Crow) whose case won the right for interracial marriage in America (true story), Natalie Portman played Jackie Kennedy: who then made the most out of here role? For me, it was Portman and Huppert. For the Screen Actor’s Guild, however, it was Stone. True enough, SAG awards predict the best actress quite precisely, and they moved me to consider Stone’s performance which led me to witness La La Land for the second time and truly immerse in her portrayal, and what a spectacle it really was.
Would win: Emma Stone (La La Land)
Could win: Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Direction
I seriously doubt if anyone can argue for a better winner that Damien Chazelle of La La Land for this category. He had created such a great vision and translated it magnificently into the La La Land that we have witnessed. A craftmanship like his is unmatchable this year.
Would (definitely) win: La La Land
Best Picture
The highest award of the night for me goes to...
La La Land, not because of its hype but because of its near-perfect mixture of elements that blend well together as well as reviving an almost-forgotten genre of musical in film. The revitalization of everything in this film is fresh as it is neat. There are other great entries in this category as well, my top favorites being Manchester by the Sea, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight. The others, Lion and Hell of High Water are also both intriguing. However, there still is something about La La Land that makes it stand out above all the rest: the direction. If not for this direction by Damien Chazelle, such a film would not be possible.
There you guys go! Here are my predictions for the 89th Academy Awards. Although I am not fully confident with the predictions I wrote, I hope you have as much fun with it as I do. This year’s Oscars awards nominations give me great hope in the future of this award giving body and I hope it continues its current course. Here’s to the honoring of the best in 2016’s films! Cheers!
