"Oh, hamburgers!" Butters shouted in panic, narrowly avoiding the gunfire.

Shots from emerging from every possible direction, the duo bolted in the search for an escape. Rushing through street hallways and dead ends, they eventually hid behind a car and waited for the swarm of enraged criminals to run past them.

Cartman peaked from the driver seat window. "I think we made it."

"I'm gonna get grounded..." Butters covered his face in shame.

"Butters, Jesus, you're trembling." Cartman said once the guys were out of earshot.

"W-We're gonna die, Eric..." Butters said, looking down in despair.

"What? No, we're not." Cartman opened the money bag, as if to check the contents were still inside.

"Y-Yeah, they're going to kidnap us and torture our families-a-and then they're going to kill them in front of us...and then we're-"

Butters' eyes went wide, the admiration dawning on him like the sunset in the sky. "Eric..." He said, standing up as well. "You really did think of everything..."

The fear inside him had suddenly turned into some kind of thrill, an elation that he couldn't explain. Whereas seconds before he was worried he might die, he was now he was excited, euphoric to be here.

Impulsively, Butters gave Cartman a peck. It had only been a millisecond though, when he realized what was doing. He pulled away with a stutter. "I..."

"What the hell, Butters?" Cartman looked positively dumbfounded.

"S-Sorry..." Butters wiped his mouth, feeling his face heat up regardless.

"Don't get gay on me." Cartman said, though he didn't sound really angry about it. There was a whistle in the distance. "That's our cue! Don't forget the money!" He said before bolting away.

With certain effort, Butters lifted the bag and started running behind him. A part of him wondered why he did that, why he suddenly felt like kissing Cartman.

geralt walked directly into a wolf trap (yes. a wolf trap. you know. the kind with teeth) and got his ass beat to horrific, actually horrible proportions, barely surviving, he spent months in the hospital—i mean temple—where he was entirely bedridden and afterwards could not even look at where he had laid because it filled him with such dread

has this man’s life just been one entire incredibly traumatizing agony and lethal injury. i mean c’est la vie du sorceleur, but my god.

the worst part of all of this is that it’s entirely plausible and everything that happened in this novel pretty much fits geralt in the saga for his neutrality and caution of revenge. but wow uh. i mean kaer morhen bruises them all pretty badly and young witchers are no strangers to pain, but geralt basically stepped one foot out of that stronghold and got bitten, beaten, chomped, sliced, diced, and his ass kicked six ways from sunday. and he was still 18

the more i think about it, i think this is the male equivalent of all the horrors which were inflicted upon ciri.

insert larger conversation here about how, in sf/fantasy especially, inflicting The Horrors onto female characters typically = SA/pregnancy, whereas male characters don’t endure those topics nearly as often. and i would say as much as i like the “all power in the hands of women” epicness that andrzej sapkowski is usually on, how he treats male characters who are SAed, or rather, are SAed but in the narrative it’s sloughed away easily like dead skin, is probably one of his worst approaches to a serious subject and a bone i have to pick. … but anyhow

that is all to say: that probably the only worse thing that could have happened to geralt would have been SA, but since that is often saved for the women in sapkowski’s novels, this is actually as low as it could have gotten for him.

because, Grevious Bodily Injury, so grevious that it’s not only incredibly painful, but disabling, which is emasculating… interesting to think about it from this lens.

what geralt got put through here was worse than what vilgefortz did to him, which is saying something. and the agonizing and humiliating feeling of that was detailed more here too, the recovery process, rather than being shown through dandelion’s and milva’s eyes.

whereas the Nords just fucking. took this entire-ass historical event. and just SHOVED A BUNCH OF SHIT IN IT THAT NO OTHER VERSION MENTIONS. AT ALL.

it's like a super bad movie adaptation and it's fucking hilarious.

So in the original tale, Dagoth Ur learns about the Tools of Kagrenac and tells Nerevar. The Tools of Kagrenac would allow the Dwemer to make a mechanical god by being used on the heart of a dead god called Lorkhan, which is sacrilege to the Chimer. Nerevar prays to Azura and she confirms it. Nerevar goes to Dumac, the King of the Dwemer, about it. Dumac, who doesn't know what Kagrenac is doing, is like "first of all, how dare you." So Nerevar's like "well a literal goddess I just consulted confirmed it so fuck you I'm gonna fuck your shit up."

Nerevar goes to fuck Dwemer shit up.

Here Dunmer accounts diverge wildly, and the fact you never find out which one is true is what I love about the lore of this game. The gist we know that's true is that Nerevar fought Dumac, the Dwemer disappeared, the Tribunal became gods and Nerevar died at some point of his injuries.

The details are fuzzier. Some accounts say that Dagoth betrayed Nerevar. Others say that Nerevar betrayed Dagoth. Some say the Tribunal were present, others say they weren't. Some say Nerevar and Azura wiped out the Dwemer. The generally accepted story is that the Dwemer wiped themselves out, but some accounts blame Nerevar. And then of course the most disputed topic of all -- the truth as to how Nerevar died, whether he was injured by Dagoth, whether the Tribunal killed him, etc etc.

No mention of Nords, to my knowledge. It was all Chimer and Dwemer stuff, and the whole thing is a very tragic tale I still get sad over when I'm drunk enough, eleven years after playing the game.

THEN YOU HAVE THE NORD VERSION.

The Nords took one look at this story and basically turned into total Americans about it.

So THEIR super special secret OC was a dude who was dead and CAME BACK TO LIFE to lead their forces into Morrowind and to the Battle of Red Mountain! Why??? because their god was stuck in the mountain or something? Which wasn't entirely off-base -- Lorkhan is also known as Shor, and Shor is a Nord god, and his heart was in the mountain and a major focal point of all this history-bending bullshit. So the Nords were like "we can't have this story about our god without it being about US, too! WE WERE TOTALLY THERE AND LED BY THIS SUPER COOL GUY."

So their SUPER SPECIAL OC marches into the mountain only to find out IT WAS A TRAP, Shor's heart wasn't REALLY there, and the EVIL ELVES literally then go and and DROP A FUCKING MOUNTAIN on them. Also even though it was a ruse and their god wasn't actually there, he also WAS there????, and got the mountain dropped on him too, because EVIL ELVES. Also their SUPER SPECIAL OC killed the Dwemer king and made all the Dwemer disappear.

At which point Vivec showed up and "blasted [him] into hell".

I'm guessing Vivec somehow managed to add that little bit into Nord lore because it sounds like something Vivec would do. Both in the sense that he'd talk about how he wrecked this guy's shit because Vivec loves making himself look awesome but also in the sense that he'd insert that little addendum into history because he thought it was funny.

In another Nordic version of this story their SUPER SPECIAL OC joined forces with their god, instead of getting a mountain dropped on top of them, and fought Nerevar and Dumac. Dagoth took advantage of the chaos to randomly stab Dumac. Nerevar was like "the fuck, dude? I wasn't done talking to him" and stabbed Dagoth. So Shor took advantage of this stabbing to stab Nerevar himself, but not before getting stabbed right back by Nerevar.

Everyone dies, except the super special OC.

So yeah, the Dunmer have this point of history that's super controversial and the Nords just basically yoinked the whole thing and shoved their OC into it and made a hilarious Hollywood movie over it.

I'm seeing an aside note about a dude getting sad that his Voice "failed him" at Red Mountain so I'm guessing that COULD be the guy who yelled at the sky, not sure.

I’m thinking about fuckin’ timeline nonsense. OKAY SO. 

I have seen a few people say that Wade time travelling to save Vanessa in Deadpool 2 means that none of the events of Deadpool 2 ever occurred, and I refuse because then WHAT ABOUT MY BOY?! RUSSELLLLL! It would throw a wrench in my schemes if that were the case. 

Anyhow… technically if that’s how time travel worked in this case, Cable going back in time and changing things would delete this version of him from existence because he changed the timeline to the point that he never would have had to go back in time… but then if he never went back in time, the events would have occurred as they did to necessitate the time travel. See that it doesn’t really make sense? Time is weird. Anyhow, the only physical sign that his present has changed is the teddy bear changing.

I’d say the way to cheat stuff so that the events of Deadpool 2 still happened is to talk completely out of my ass. Let’s say we have multiple options here:

Number one: Wade going back in time and saving Vanessa only changes the timeline in that she is alive in the present. It does not erase what happened when she was dead. Perhaps, she got pulled from the Alive Timeline into the timeline where she died. And fuck that alternate timeline okay we ain’t dealing with it. 

Number two: Okay so yeah Wade saving Vanessa does technically negate all his actions following her death, but perhaps an altered series of events akin to what happened in the film still occurred. Wade still joins the X-Men and still meets Russell and Cable and all that. Hence how he also goes back to save Peter, whereas if Vanessa’s death was the only catalyst for Wade later forming X-Force, that scene would have been null and void. 

Number three, really fucky option: Wade fucking with the timeline did create a new one, but instead of splitting off from the old one, they fused, so everyone involved in that nonsense has memories of what occurred originally and what occurred in the altered timeline… simultaneously? Kind of like how Logan can remember everything from before Days of Future Past and gets caught up on what’s happened in the new timeline, but just extend that to everyone. Some major deja vu there. I like the idea of Vanessa having memories of being dead and Wade trying to die to reach her/punish himself, and that is in part why she ends the relationship: knowing how he destroys himself over her, how his dangerous job endangers her and if she dies again he will spiral again. And like she quips about the new guy she’s seeing not getting her shot. Either she remembers being shot or Wade just caught her up on what happened. I think Vanessa being aware of everything that happened lends to her character's depth, makes her feel less like a bystander in her own life.

1) “Are we all properly drunk or it’s just me? I think it’s just me, but I’m having my doubts about Furuhashi’s sobriety here. Yet, I’m planning to be the one left standing when this is all over, this story shall not defeat me I tell you that. It didn’t got me before, it won’t get me now, and what a fitting title for this chapter. 2) “Oh no, Koichi was caught by a hit, he’s gonna die 6v chapters before the end of the story? Oh the humanity~”-Look, basically everybody was the walking dead in this fight, especially Nomura. I don’t think there’s any one of the main group that didn’t have a half-foot in the grave towards the end of it. 3) “The last All Might hoodie… has been destroyed…

Now get ready for Koichi fighting butt-naked against McBee”- It blew off his hoodie, but sadly, Koichi hasn’t worked out to Midoira’s level enough to get the full shirtless scene. 4) “Koichi joined Pop and Knuckleduster in the afterlife. Tragic. This explains why AfO never went after his quirk.”-That, and AFO no longer resembles his passport for overseas trips. 5) “…oh my fucking god this is literally the reason why AfO didn’t tried to go after him? He thought he died here? Even though I bet my fucking ass that he’s gonna show up in five seconds to fight again?”- Nah, he just figured that Koichi wasn’t worth devoting nearly as much effort into focusing on as All Might and OFA, especially now his plans had taken a definite step towards completion with the Nomura data being used to create his multi-Quirk using soldiers. 6) “Had your fun already McBee? Ready to evaporate? Although I want to see if those bones will be left behind or not”- Honestly, this last portion of the fight was kinda unnecessary. Koichi just had to play dead and let Nomura’s emotional high that was powering his transformation die down, then emerge in the aftermath once he’d lost the spark to keep going. Koichi’s last stand against Nomura here was as much a way of giving the guy a means of not dying alone and unnoticed as it were, a means of “saving” the soul of the guy he didn’t really know and who hated his guts from the start. 7) “Now we’re really starting to lean into Attack on Titan territory, aren’t we?”- Would it be easier or harder to cut Nomura’s spine in this state, I wonder? It’s easier to see the target, but harder to approach as a consequence. 8) “OH MY FUCKING GOD 

IT’S ANOTHER FLASHBACK”- Nope, it’s metaphor-land, just to make things more confusing at the 11th hour for you! 9) “WAIT WHAT THE FUCK, WASN’T HE UNDER AFO’s CONTROL BY THEN? HOW THE FUCK DID HE LEFT THE LAB TO GO PLAY WITH THE KIDS?!”- Nope, those kids are all playing All Might cosplays and the like, whereas Nomura’s trying to showcase the Overclock action figure as a means of demonstrating his own idea of what the top hero’s like to them as a means of fitting it…and because the majority of the masses don’t like being singled out for being “different” or having contrary opinions that go out with others, they all shun Nomura instead for his own innocent perception. It may have been the kids claiming they admired the “top��� hero, but really they just admired the one everybody agreed was popular, without stopping to consider that not everybody would share the same view of what made the best hero, and shunning those that did. 10) “…Is the implication here that liking O'Clock was something so lame that nobody wanted to interact with him?”- The implication is that, like Tomura, having opinions or a situation that others didn’t agree with meant they were shunned and ignored rather than make a scene out of events, leaving them easy prey for AFO’s manipulations for them to come along in the aftermath when they’re on their own. It’s no coincidence that Nomura’s approached by Koichi alone in this metaphor, just like AFO approached Tenko afterwards. If somebody had bothered to be there for them when they needed emotional support, they might not have fallen as hard as they did, and ultimately, it’s because Koichi’s there for Nomura in the end that he stays his hand form the killing blow rather than follow AFO’s orders till the end of his life. @thelreads

Thoughts on Honesty and Authenticity in Twenty Five Twenty One

(gotta let this out before ep 14 drops and I find a new topic to ramble about and analyze cause I'm in way too deep into this drama)

Okay, so:

What's so beautiful about Hee Do is that she embodies not just passion and perseverance but an unwavering commitment to being honest to herself.

During the first few episodes, she frequently argues with her mom, be it about pursuing fencing or feeling misunderstood. Yet she stands her ground (and idk about you but I wouldn't want to put up that many fights with this cold ass ice queen mom lmao).

Notice how during every conflict Hee Do has, she looks the other person straight in the eyes and tells how she feels, be it anger, sadness, or disappointment. She never backs down from being honest. Yi Jin's harmless chocolate prank that gets her so riled up is just one instance that firmly attests to this:

Or also after she admits why she's been avoiding him:

Yi Jin, on the other hand, has always learned to run away from conflict, adopted to him by his family running from creditors and scattering after the financial crisis.

While climbing the social ladder, he is consistently a people pleaser, always accommodating and bending over backwards. And he detests it because he knows it's unfair to himself.

Think about the company drinks scene when the boss keeps rubbing in that he's just a high school graduate and is oh so very lucky to be in this company, like he owes them. It's so fucking degrading but Yi Jin tries to cover it up with some humor:

But then the camera pans back to him and he is just a lonely mess of angry and sad at the same time because he's not living his authenticity.

And when he DOES stand up for himself, it's met with a backfire. The way he had to just stand there and take the berating of that stupid toxic producer guy because that's how company hierarchy just works hurt my heart.

He drinks to stop feeling or thinking too much. His honesty - his unfiltered exhaustion of the life of accommodating superiors and upholding professionalism in every corner of his life - tends to spew out of him when he's drunk and his mind can't repress his true feelings, like when his dad called and he asks him:

(the way he says this with so much defeat in his voice, like a part of him is dead inside got to me-)

This isn't to say it's a character flaw, it's moreso a reflection of how cruel the world can be, that he has to distance himself from his wants and needs to stay afloat and support himself and his family.

We see him grow increasingly more agitated and depressed at the situation. The only times he is authentically himself? When he's hanging out with the crew, and especially with Hee Do. Often, what he learns about honesty, he learns from her.

Episode 13 really highlights the rising tension in their different conflict resolution tactics: she wants him to be upfront and just say he doesn't want her if that's truly the case, whereas he wants to linger in a safe zone for a while longer, unsure of how to live out his feelings. Nothing is more evident of this than THIS exchange:

It was as though they thought that you were unable to hear their chatter, but you knew that they would be wrong with assuming so. An immortal. It felt strange to think that you would no longer age in physical layers, instead, your mind would be the only participant within your body to forever grow with the various memories that you would be collecting through the next decades. Did she think that she was defending you? Because to you, it didn’t sound like it, but that was Caroline for you, always insistent of her opinion, though, you two did get along. The pair of you understood what it was like to be on the sidelines, whilst perfect Elena played the victim every time, and got any guy she wanted, even her friends were swayed with the young gentlemen first.

Elena Gilbert was the epiphany of perfect; she was the damsel in distress, giving the opportunity to whomever she sought after to come and save her. But it had happened, and whilst it brought the pair of you closer, there was no maker bond, instead, there had already been a flirtatious brewing between the pair of you whilst you were still human.

You becoming like him gave the two of you more time together as he trained you to breathe idly in and calm your bloodlust. Or how in the middle of the night, he would come by your house, and awake you from a terror, afterwards taking you for an innocent stroll through the woods.

Without him, you’d have been on a path to nowhere, lost and unable to find a route to continue on, wading through the life after death with no direction, nor set course to keep you in line. Surely, you’d have murdered many a man or woman, if you were dependant with surviving with her bewitched curse of immortality, digging into their inviting throats with your dagger canine teeth, that pulsed to be fed.

“That’s a load of- you know what, think what you want to think, you have a history of jealousy filled, toxic and werewolf involved relationships, you are not exactly the best person here to judge me on my healthy and loving romantic partnership with y/n!”

Damon half yelled at the vampiric blonde, however, another tone was fast to respond to his defensive outburst and cause the both of you a disgruntled pair of expressions. “She was turned by you brother, that runs the risk of a sore bond appropriating her feelings.”

Oh, noble Stefan. He had caused you to snap, thrusting the door open to his brother’s bedroom open, making its hinges weaken, as you whisked through the halls in seconds, joining the compendium of mystic falls in the living space, all eyes turned to you, well aware that you had heard all their smart mouthed and toxic opinions.

The sire bond wasn’t something that was too uncommon, however it affected nothing in your life. It was just for them to pick at something that was good, they could never allow something that was actually decent to revel in existence. They had to be the ones with the perfect prissy lives, not others.

“Shut your mouth, ripper!” Yes, you pulled at that string of his life, dangling it degradingly before his eyes, watching as his eyes that were focalised into you turned sour. “I love your brother, and just because you loved the love triangles the pair of you would be involved in with bitchy Gilbert over there, or bloody Katherine, does not make any other people that he or you are with invalid!”

Elena stepped forwards, her doe eyes boring with contained anger towards you. Though instead of speaking to you, her words were directed at her ex, and she wanted to gouge your reaction. “You promised me that we were going to last forever, are you going to do the same to her?”

“No, because I don’t need a time span to appreciate her presence in. I don’t need to tell her lies nor make selfish promises, because with her I am a better man.” Damon sneered at her, coming to stand beside you, protectively wrapping his arm around your shoulders.

“It’s the sire bond.” Elena stated furiously, hating the fact that she was not getting her way. In turn, you laughed, shaking your head at her incessant denial of allowing Damon to move on.

“Shut the fuck up, if you had maybe given a shit about me in the past, you’d have realised that I would stare at you enviously when you were at his side. But maybe you knew, and you just wanted to brag, but I can prove that there is no bond other than the one we already built together.”

“Yeah, and how are you going to do that?” She pestered, and with a sorrowful glance directed at Damon, you dropped your head, anything but proud with what you were about to do. Swiftly you turned, watching as Damon’s eyes widened.

“I’m going to leave.” Whence you began to walk, a hand grasped your wrist, keeping your feet locked where they were. Caroline’s voice broke through the air, her eyes were filled with regret, from all the things that she had said, and all the opinions that she had formed.

“You’re not serious! You’re gonna break up with him because of us?” Stiffly you nodded, watching as Damon felt a taken back. He gaped his mouth open, in shock.

“I’d do anything for my friends, despite the circumstances not being reciprocated. I’m not even allowed to be in a relationship with the man that I love because you are all endorsed with the idea that it’s some stupid bond. Yes, we have a bond, but it’s not a sire one.”

“Baby, don’t.” Damon practically begged, watching as you yourself were torn and conflicted in regards to the situation. A sad smile monitored your face, as you slipped out of his grasp.

“We might have to wait another lifetime until we’re allowed to be together without resorts of undermining and people that don’t really care about us. Some people want there to be a whole ass agility course to separate us, but maybe if we wait, we can prove how wrong they are, if they’re not dead by then.”

Caroline felt terrible, once again Stefan had taken his brother’s life from him, and Elena, well she felt accomplished. She went to reach for Damon’s arm, but he threw her consoling manner and herself across the room, heading straight after you, with a bottle of bourbon.

If you could leave them to prove a point, so could be; he loved you. That was enough, especially for him, he could leave those doses of poison behind, if he would grant himself permission without asking, a peaceful life with you.

The blossoming love between Guillermo and Nandor is so... 👌 And not going to lie, got strong Castlevania vibes from the religious ideology that God exists and is on the opposite side of creatures of the night, but that churches and the people who run them can still be corrupted. Just an AMAZING story summed up in 20K words.

Why I Recommend: I am all on board with the Nandor Ghost having a boner for Guillermo trope!  😆 And this is by far my favorite one! Not just because Ghost!Nandor is like ‘great, I’ve become an idiot’, but I love that he is like ‘oh look at this hot piece of warrior ass I keep around, I sure hope I’m banging that’.

So normally, I don’t recommend fics that are just getting started because you never know if the author is going to lose interest...*cough, cough, calling myself out here* but I had to try this one because it looked so interesting and I am HOOKED! I’m so excited to keep up with this one and hope they will continue because it is an AWESOME AU!

BnHA Chapter 299: No Chains Left

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “and then AFO broke out all of the inmates from six other prisons and took a nap. well anyways, here’s the hospital angst.” Kacchan woke up two days later and was all, “WAIT BUT HOW ARE DEKU AND TODOROKI AND ALL OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS EXCEPT IIDA DOING” and then we cut to Shouto’s room where the other U.A. kids were sitting around being Mutually Traumatized and giving each other moral support and such. Everyone was alll, “...”, and then the rest of the Todofam showed up, INCLUDING POSSIBLY REI?! which, omg. The chapter ended with Kacchan STOMPING THROUGH THE HALLS all “WHADDYA MEAN DEKU HASN’T WOKEN UP YET”, dragging along Satou and Mineta behind him, fueled by the power of ALL OF THE FUCKS HE NOW GIVES. He gives so many fucks now you guys. This boy cares so much he can probably deduct it on his taxes.

Today on BnHA: SPEAKING OF PEOPLE WHO GIVE A LOT OF FUCKS, the story cuts abruptly to Hawks, freshly recovering from his near-death experience, and pondering the threads that have weaved the tapestry of his life and led him to this moment. Basically he grew up in poverty with his Jerk Dad and Jerk Mom until his dad got arrested one day and his mom sent him off to go Find Money Or Something, and so he rescued a busload of people and found himself a new career. Back in the present day, Hawks and Jeanist ride around town in Jeanist’s Jamborghini having awkward encounters with civilians in a country on the brink of social collapse, and visiting Hawks’s mother’s home. Hawks is all “I know from an outsider’s perspective it must look like my life currently sucks, but now that the HPSC is gone, my public image is shot, and my parents are finally out of my life, I’m actually feeling SURPRISINGLY GOOD.” Anyway so he’s gonna go meet up with Endeavor now, and p.s. this chapter was fucking fantastic though, damn.

and small wonder then that he latched on to Endeavor so strongly if he really is the one who brought down his dad and inadvertently saved him from this. also, just putting this out there, I know people are always talking about him and Dabi being foils, and I think it’s very interesting how Touya grew up in a household where he saw firsthand the dark side of hero society, and so ended up becoming a villain in order to bring it down. whereas young Keigo had almost the exact opposite experience, growing up experiencing the dark side of villain society and becoming a hero in order to bring about a world where no one else has to experience that. just. both of them are so determined not to become their fathers. some interesting parallels there

so Hawks was sort of an accident after his parents had “thanks for helping me not get caught after I killed that guy” sex, and now this little boy is growing up in squalor and being beaten by his father for things like Sitting In The Wrong Out-Of-The-Way Corner Trying Not To Be A Bother To Anybody. holy fuck. this is so rough to read through you guys

I had a discussion the other day with @mad-man-with-a-book, about Green vs Red and the weight of Lupin’s name and family legacy. Which ended up turning into a full-fledged headcanon and character psycho-analysis, so I thought I’d type it up and post it.

The movie Green vs Red low-key suggests that there never was a “real” Lupin, ie that the first Lupin III before all the impostors was never even related to Arsène Lupin in the first place, but chose to take that name and the reputation that’s linked to it (kinda like Netflix’s Lupin series). While I like the idea, I still prefer the interpretation where Lupin actually is Arsène Lupin’s grandson, because there’s a lot of angst and drama with the weight of a family legacy. And as we all know, I love angst and drama.

For clarity’s sake, and to avoid repeating “Lupin” all the damn time, I’m gonna call Lupin I “Ichisei”, Lupin II “Nisei” and Lupin III “Sansei”.

By the time the anime takes place, Sansei has entirely accepted and made his the legacy of the Lupin name, and the responsibility that goes with it. But he still didn’t entirely choose it, it kind of got dumped on him without him asking. Of course he could have refused, he technically wasn’t obligated to participate in the race for the title of Lupin III; but as the grandson and direct descendant of Ichisei, there must have been a pressure and expectations on him that were way stronger than on other members of the family (then again, we don’t know how many grandchildren Ichisei has, according to the manga he was about as horny as Sansei, and Albert d’Andrésy could very well have the same relation to Ichisei as Sansei… but I digress).

Personally, but that’s just a headcanon, I think Nisei was a good thief but nowhere near the level of Ichisei, and that’s part of what pushes Sansei to outdo himself so much. We know very little about Nisei, but apparently according to the manga he was an absolute dickhead, and I’ve kind of latched onto the idea that he was awful and Sansei hates him, while also being forced to admire him because of his legacy. (I don’t know precisely how shitty a father, but I’m picturing very shitty.)

As a kid, Sansei admired his father just as much as his grandfather, because although Nisei couldn’t hold a candle to Ichisei, he was still a damn good thief by the underworld’s standards; and more importantly, he was a Lupin. Except Sansei didn’t like his father, because he was a dickhead. So, to free himself from that admiration for a father he despised, he had to surpass him, and become more worthy of the Lupin name than him. To be able to hate him in peace.

Regarding GvsR, I think that if Sansei was some random dude born in another family (but still the same person, with the same personality), he could have admired Arsène Lupin Ichisei and decided to take him as a model to become a thief, and eventually take his name once he felt worthy of it (which, knowing Sansei and his huge ego, probably happened very early on). That would have been an entirely free decision, a choice he made to follow in his idol’s footsteps.

Whereas if Sansei really is Ichisei’s grandson, he carries the weight on his legacy on his shoulders. The choices he has are: 1) follow the path traced for him by his family and become a (more or less talented) thief, 2) say fuck it and abandon his legacy because the pressure is too high, or 3) stick it to his father by deciding to be even better than the man whose shadow he grow up in, to free himself from that pressure; conforming himself to his family’s expectations while surpassing them, shattering them, to prove that they were wrong and he’s better than all of them.

His only way to free himself from his family’s expectation is to either abandon the way of the thief – something he is incapable of resolving to do because that would be a failure in his own eyes – or becoming the best damn thief his family has ever produced. To be free he has to conform himself to his family’s expectations. And honestly, I find that way more interesting than a random (genius, but random) dude who takes the name of Lupin and appropriates by choice the reputation of Arsène Lupin Ichisei.

Additionally, I like the idea that Nisei is dead, or completely out of the game and in prison forever, by the time Sansei gets his title. The concept of a dead father who you can’t prove yourself to anymore is also an interesting aspect to explore.

For context, I typed this whole-ass dissertation about the weight of the Lupin legacy and the lore and psychology of Lupin III into my friend’s inbox, all the while drawing a shitpost about the LoopGang’s collective braincell. This is a perfect summary of the dichotomy of this anime.

While I’m here, random headcanon: Sansei’s a trans guy, and while he was born with the last name Lupin, calling himself Arsène was his own choice.

Hi Polynya! I’m curious and in the spirit of Ginrei’s birthday, what do you think are his opinions of Rukia and Renji separately and together?

Ha ha, this is such a simple and straightforward question and my answer is going to be so long and so complicated and have almost nothing to do with Rukia and Renji because Ginrei's feelings toward Rukia and Renji have almost nothing to do with Rukia and Renji.

So, I want to start out by saying that Ginrei is a lot like Hisana in the sense that he's a canon character, we get the idea of him and what he's there for, but there's no actual characterization of him, which gives fanfic writers a tremendous amount of leeway to do whatever they want with him. I'm not going to try to justify anything I say here, it's just my ideas and how it goes in my fanfiction. I love it whenever a writer tries to take on the Kuchiki clan and I'm always interested to see what other people's takes are, even when they vary wildly from my own.

I love the fact that "Kuchiki" means "dead tree." We meet Rukia first, and it's sort of a delightfully spoopy name, very appropriate for this salty, overdramatic, grim reaper girl, but it takes on additional meaning when we meet Byakuya, the noble and powerful scion of a dying house.

The thing that makes Ginrei interesting as a character to me is that he is the one who ruled over his house as it fell. I tend to regard filler episodes as semi-canon, so I like the idea of Kouga, even if I don't want to acknowledge the rest of the Zanpakutou Rebellion shenanigans. I think that the main line of the Kuchiki was already running a little thin, Soujun's health was a big concern, and so they marry in this guy who is a scholar and a powerful shinigami. They never say what Kouga's previous social status was, but given that they emphasize what an accomplished dude he is, I think he was chosen for his skills, not his lineage, to strengthen the Kuchiki bloodline, except it backfires. Then Soujun dies, too, a few years later.

Ginrei strikes me as the type of leader who thinks he can control everything. He manages his clan with an iron fist. He is pragmatic, not sentimental. He’s not bad or mean, but he can see that he does not have a lot of room for missteps, and he takes his role very, very seriously. Despite this, he’s lost the generation under him, and all that he has left is Byakuya. There are cousins and branch families, but to the pride of the Kuchiki is its main line, descended from great generals and heroes and the very founders of Soul Society. Byakuya, in a lot of ways, hearkens back to the great Kuchiki of old, and Ginrei sees that he has the potential to reclaim the power and glory of his house. He’s hard on Byakuya and has high expectations for him. Ginrei loved his son and he loves his grandson, but after Soujun’s death, he often wonders if he was too soft on him because of his health, if Soujun would have lived if Ginrei had just expected more of him. Byakuya is the last hope of the Kuchiki and Ginrei knows he can achieve great things, and Ginrei is determined to do everything in his power to make sure Byakuya achieves his full potential.

And some ways, Byakuya is the perfect Kuchiki. He’s strong and he’s hard-working. He’s principled. He’s working on his self-control, and he’s very good at when it comes, to say, sword practice, he’s just not so good at in when it comes to interpersonal relations, but he’s coming along. Then he meets Hisana.

Hisana is absolutely unacceptable to Ginrei. Byakuya needs a marriage with a woman with strong spiritual pressure and a noble lineage so that he can gain some alliances from the marriage and then she can pop out some strapping young heirs while also managing his social life for him, just like Ginrei’s wife did for him. Hisana obviously isn’t going to check any of these boxes.

I headcanon Byakuya as demisexual, in the sense that he doesn’t experience sexual attraction very often, and if he does, it’s only to someone he’s already got strong feelings for. He was sort of okay with the vague idea of marrying someone for the purposes of procreating until he met Hisana and realized how much that would pale in comparison to actually being married to the love of his life.

Up until this point, Byakuya has had some minor rebellions against Ginrei, but they’ve never really gone at it, but this is one time that Byakuya stands firm. Ginrei is super-pissed. He lets Byakuya marry her because he figures she’s going to die soon anyway, but he’s mad about it. He never comes around to Hisana and he’s mean to her and this is really the nadir of Byakuya and Ginrei’s relationship.

Finally, we are getting around to what you asked. Hisana dies and Ginrei softens a little toward Byakuya in his grief. He retires and turns the clan and Squad 6 over to B, hoping it will be a distraction and that Byakuya will finally turn his focus over to what matters. This seems to be going well for about one year and then BAM! Byakuya acquires an orphan.

I am guessing that Ginrei didn’t know about Byakuya’s promise to Hisana to take care of Rukia, but even so, I think if you asked him, he would have regarded Byakuya’s duty to his clan and promise to his parents as more important. It’s not that Ginrei isn’t an honorable man, it’s that his concept of honor doesn’t necessarily extend to a dead peasant in comparison the Noble and Ancient House of Kuchiki. So Byakuya adopts Rukia and Ginrei’s immediate reaction is panic. What is Byakuya doing? Is he going to marry this girl? Is he going to name her his Heir? Has he cracked? And it turns out to be none of those things, he’s just going to keep her around as this sad ghost that haunts his house, but Ginrei’s initial reaction toward Rukia is that of interloper. He thought this Hisana nonsense was overwith, but no, we’re still doing this.

When Ginrei first meets Rukia, she is in her overwhelmed, lonely stage of first becoming a Kuchiki. Ginrei also criticizes her for being small and meek and basically useless. She’s a mediocre shinigami. She’s not beautiful or talented, so Byakuya can’t even marry her off for political gain. The real issue, though is that Rukia is just emblematic of the fact that Byakuya doesn’t intend to move past his grief and remarry. He works his ass off as Captain and Clan Head, but other than that, he’s just gonna be a sad widower and sit in his big house and write letters to his dead wife and the Kuchiki are going to die off. There is really nothing Rukia could do, no way she could be different that Ginrei would approve of, because it was never really about her in the first place.

Fast forward a few years, and now we come to Renji. I also headcanon that in his retirement, Ginrei has moved out to a scenic portion of Rukongai, so he doesn’t interact with Byakuya much on a day-to-day basis, but he hears stuff through other family members that come out to visit him. He’s never actually met Renji, all he knows is that Shirogane retired, and Byakuya hired some tattooed goon from Squad 11 instead of one of the dozens of Kuchiki cousins that are lying around. In my fanfic Call Me Back When the War is Over, Byakuya explains to one of his aunts that the reason he did this was because he didn’t have a relative who was capable of passing the Lieutenant’s Exam. She replies that he just should have pulled some strings so that someone (preferably her own son) could pass, assuming it’s a mere formality. Now this is exactly what Ginrei would have done. This is a problem, though: it involves choosing sides. I’ve got the top seats of Squad 6 set up as follows:

- 3rd Seat Ohno is the Heir to the most powerful Kuchiki branch family. His father is arguably the next in line for Clan Head, based on power terms - 4th Seat Kuchiki Choei is an actual Kuchiki, but he’s a younger son and he’s a clown, meaning that he got bored standing in line for Clan Head and wandered around the corner to vape - 5th Seat Kuchiki Takehiko is the actual closest of Byakuya’s relatives to him, and is arguably the next in line for Clan Head, strictly on family line terms

Pulling strings to help any of these three become the next lieutenant would be a very political move on B’s part, tantamount to anointing his successor. Ginrei assumes that B picked an outsider for the purposes of recusing, of saying “I shall simply refuse to die and remain Clan Head myself, forever’, with the addition fuck you of picking the Actual Worst Person Byakuya Could Find for the job, instead.

This really isn’t the case at all, it is literally that Byakuya feels that you shouldn’t be a lieutenant if you can’t pass the exam. He’s basically a rule-follower, and also it’s a good rule, and also his dad died as a lieutenant and I think he thinks a lot about how that could have been avoided through actions, whereas Ginrei tends to think of it more of a thing that could have been avoided if Soujun was better.

So, that gets us up to the beginning of canon. I am (in theory) working on a fanfic that takes place in the 17-mo timeskip where Ginrei comes to visit and actually gets to know Rukia and Renji and (spoiler alert, but is anyone really surprised) he ends up liking both of them a lot. Part of it is just Ginrei has chilled out somewhat in his retirement and realized that it’s okay to have parts of your life that are not completely devoted to the Good of the Clan. Part of it is that Ginrei loves Competence and Rukia and Renji are so, so competent. Part of it is that Byakuya is obviously doing a lot better than he was, and it’s just really obvious why. Like I said, Ginrei does and always has loved Byakuya, he just wants what’s best for him. It’s just that if there is one thing Kuchiki are terrible at, it’s expressing their love for one another in a positive and healthy way.

As to Ginrei’s feelings about Renruki as a ship, he’s for it, actually. Conniving family members have been trying to marry Rukia for years in hopes of getting an in with Byakuya, and I’m sure they’re setting their sights on Renji, now, too. Ginrei likes them well enough, but he can imagine what a shitshow this could turn out to be, and he finds it very convenient if they were to just marry each other.

I’m rather fond of the idea of Byakuya appointing them as a branch family to the Kuchiki, because I’m not super keen on them going full-Kuchiki if Renji married in, but I think Byakuya would be upset if Rukia married out and he wasn’t able to provide her with the lavish lifestyle he thinks she needs (she does not). It’s a nice compromise that lets them be a part of the family, but out of the limelight. In any case, I think that was Ginrei’s idea, thanks Granddad!

1) “HEEEEEY- LONG TIME NO SEE CLOUDY, I WAS WONDERING FOR HOW MUCH LONGER THEY WOULD GO WITHOUT SHOWING YOU”- So, rough timescale for this places it about 15 years or more after Shirakumo’s ‘passing’, and I find it interesting how this reveal is interplayed between both series, because again, there’s nothing here that tells you Shirakumo and Kurogiri are the same being, despite them both showing up in this manga, you’d have to have read to the reveal in MHA to get the double-context of his appearance here, and otherwise, you’d have played it off as just a loyal servant always being by his master’s side. 2) “AND HERE COMES NUMBER FIVE! EVERYBODY GET READY FOR SOME FUN TIMES I HOPE”- Number Hood is in the room, ready to party. To count, we now have four of the series’ foremost fighting maniacs all locked in the same room together.

IT CAN’T BE McBEE, BUT IT CAN BE A PREVIOUS PROTO-NOMU, OH GOD WHICH ONE IS IT, IS IT NUMBER FIVE?”- It’s Number Hood! 6) “YEAH RAPPA, THAT ONE YOU GUYS CAN KILL, ALRIGHT?”- Well, Rappa can certainly try, but by the same rules that guarantee his own survival, Hood is likewise protected as well. Still, this fight gonna get bloody. “Oh I think somebody is about to get an ass-kicking… but it definitely can’t be Rappa since he was never defeated before.”- Never defeated in an official cage match. This is now a free-style brawl. Side-note, I’m pleasantly surprised to recognise the flicker-jab style Hood’s using from my time reading Hajime no Ippo. That series really increased my knowledge of how technical punching can get. That said, Hood’s got the advantage of literally being able to turn his arms into a whip, rather than just mimicking the effects with a snap punch.

7) “You got over Knuckles turning you down pretty fucking quick, didn’t you Rappa? Well, I want to see what the previous generation of Proto-Nomu had to offer, I hope it’s something I can use to belittle McBee”- It seems like Hood had, at a baseline, the muscle-tearing/body morphing abilities he made extensive use of against Endeavour put into him at first, with the other stuff getting added on later. This contrasts with Nomura having an humanoid body shape, but sticking to that template in order to roleplay his idealised self as a hero to the public, whereas Hood is literally tearing himself apart and stitching himself back together in order to better hit to opponent. 8) “Okay he was fast, even without the need for a speed quirk That’s already a 1x0 over McBee, nice”- That’s all his old boxing training coming to the forefront. He’s not actually moving at super-speed, he’s just moving to where Rappa’s punches aren’t, making it look like he’s faster. After all, he doesn’t need to hit quicker when he can hit longer instead. 9) “I know I shouldn’t be surprised, this thing is a proto-nomu after all, it would definitely have some tricks up his sleeve but jesus fuck that is horrifying”- It seems Hood literally rips apart his arm’s internal structure to increase his flexibility, turning his fist into a moving flail, before rapidly reconfiguring the damage back into the semblance of a working arm once the blow connects. Since his internal body seems to be composed of stringy muscle fibres, it can be assumed that it’s a derivate Quirk along a similar line as Muscular, only instead of growing more muscles, he’s rapidly stretching and tearing the ones he already possesses. Probably why Hood was later give Muscular’s cloned Quirk, if the synergy between their abilities is that good. 10) “Now you better get up boy, remember what you told kirishima?”- Rappa said he never lost, not that he didn’t take a sucker-blow to the floor once or twice. It ain’t about how much you get hit, it’s about how many times you stand up, and after seeing that horrifying display, I don’t blame him for needing a second to re-evaluate what the hell’s up with his opponent. 11) “You know, the fact that his face is being kept hidden makes me think that once knuckles actually manage to land a hit, it will be revealed that he has the same face as McBee, and everyone reading this will go “GASP O:” “- Or we’ll all recognise the other noticeable Nomu that showcased independent though on the battlefield, besides Kurogiri, who’s already had his turn.

12) “DAMMIT MIRKO THAT’S NOW HOW YOU PROTECT THE UNDEFEATED RAPPA!”- And a hint towards Hood’s competitive nature, rappa attacks with punches, he counters with punching. Mirko attacks with a kick, he counters with a kick.
