This was the moment that mattered. Trump's political movement relies on total impunity for liars, and mostly gets it. The lies bind them together, cement their feeling of power.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 1, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Oct 02, 2024
More than 45,000 U.S. dock workers went on strike today for the first time since 1977, nearly 50 years ago. The International Longshoremen's Association union, which represents 45,000 port workers, is negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group over a new contract. The strike will shut down 36 ports from Maine to Texas, affecting about half the country’s shipping. Analysts from J.P. Morgan estimate that the strike could cost the U.S. economy about $5 billion a day. The strikers have said they will continue to unload military cargo.
Dockworkers want a 77% increase in pay over six years and better benefits, while USMX has said it has offered to increase wages by nearly 50%, triple employer contributions to retirement plans, and improve health care options. In the Washington Post, economics columnist Heather Long pointed out that the big issue at stake is the automation that threatens union jobs.
Although the strike threatens to slow the economy depending on how long it lasts, President Joe Biden has refused requests to force the strikers back to work, reiterating his support for collective bargaining. He noted that ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic—sometimes in excess of 800% over prepandemic levels—and that executive compensation and shareholder profits have reflected those profits. “It’s only fair that workers, who put themselves at risk during the pandemic to keep ports open, see a meaningful increase in their wages as well,” Biden said in a statement.
In the presidential contest, the Trump-Vance campaign is trying to preserve its false narrative. In Wisconsin today, Trump accused Vice President Harris of murder—although he appeared to get confused about the victim—and claimed that she has a phone app on which the heads of cartels can get information about where to drop undocumented immigrants. He also said that Kim Jong Un of North Korea is trying to kill him.
When asked if he should have been tougher on Iran after it launched ballistic missiles in 2020 on U.S. forces in Iraq, leaving more than 100 U.S. soldiers injured, Trump rejected the idea that soldiers with traumatic brain injuries were actually hurt. He said “they had a headache” and said he thought the attack “was a very nice thing because they didn’t want us to retaliate.”
Trump also backed out of a scheduled interview with 60 Minutes that correspondent Scott Pelley was slated to conduct on Thursday. 60 Minutes noted that for more than 50 years, the show has invited both campaigns to appear on the broadcast before the election and this year, both campaigns agreed to an interview. Trump’s spokesperson complained that 60 Minutes “insisted on doing live fact checking, which is unprecedented.” Vice President Kamala Harris will participate in her interview as planned.
The campaign’s resistance to independent fact checking of their false narrative came up in tonight’s vice presidential debate on CBS between Minnesota governor Tim Walz, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s running mate, and Ohio senator J.D. Vance, running mate for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. CBS Evening News anchor Norah O'Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan moderated the debate.
Walz’s goal in the debate was to do no harm to Vice President Harris’s campaign, and he achieved that. Vance’s goal was harder: to give people a reason to vote for Donald Trump. It is doubtful he moved any needles there.
The moments that did stand out in the debate put a spotlight on Vance’s tenuous relationship with the truth. When Vance lied again about the migrants in Springfield, Ohio, who are in the United States legally, Brennan added: "Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status."
Vance responded: "The rules were that you guys weren't going to fact-check.”
There were two other big moments of the evening, both based in lies. First, Vance claimed that Trump, who tried repeatedly to repeal or weaken the Affordable Care Act, “saved” it. Then, Walz asked Vance directly if Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. Vance refused to answer, saying he is “focused on the future,” and warned that “the threat of censorship” is the real problem in the U.S.
Walz said: “That’s a damning non-answer.”
Former chair of the Republican Party Michael Steele said after the debate: “I don't care where you are on policy…. If you cannot in 2024 answer that question, you are unfit for office.”
It was significant that Vance tried to avoid saying either that Trump won in 2020—a litmus test for MAGA Republicans—or that he lost, a reflection of reality. While this debate probably didn’t move a lot of voters for the 2024 election, what it did do was make Vance look like a far more viable candidate than his running mate. Waffling on the Big Lie seemed designed to preserve his candidacy for future elections.
It seems likely that the message behind Vance’s smooth performance wasn’t lost on Trump. As the debate was going on, Trump posted: “The GREAT Pete Rose just died. He was one of the most magnificent baseball players ever to play the game. He paid the price! Major League Baseball should have allowed him into the Hall of Fame many years ago. Do it now, before his funeral!”
Former Cincinnati Reds baseball player Rose died yesterday at 83.

Aimee’s 2023 royal family engagement count: The final results!
Disclaimer; everyone’s counts will be different, people have different rules to their method of counting the Court Circular. It isn’t a definitive count and is done just for fun 💗
The court circular doesn’t record any work behind the scenes, only public engagements, official meetings and luncheons/dinners. It’s more a gauge of their public facing roles.
👑 Princess Anne 👑
Once again Princess Anne tops the chart as the hardest working royal, completing 467 engagements.
She has done 393 engagements in the UK.
She travelled to 10 different countries this year and did 74 engagements there. 🇨🇾🇪🇪🇳🇿🇦🇺🇫🇷🇨🇦🇩🇪🇯🇪🇮🇳🇬🇮
Dubbed by some as the unofficial Queen of Scots she did 62 in Scotland.

In the first year of his reign King Charles did a grand total of 463 engagements
In the UK he did 386 engagements.
He travelled to 5 different countries where he completed 76 engagements and did 3 full royal tours in Germany, France and Kenya. He also hosted a state visit for South Korea at Buckingham Palace. 🇩🇪🇷🇴🇫🇷🇰🇪🇦🇪
What is also worth mentioning is that he has Red Boxes that he has to go through every single day, except Christmas Day and Easter Sunday as well as a lot of work behind the scenes.
Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh
This year, on his 59th birthday, Prince Edward became the Duke of Edinburgh, taking the title of his father. With this he increased his work with the Duke of Edinburgh award and travelling to visit international sections of the award. On anon bc I know this will be controversial but one crazy take on the holocaust/wwii is that the American internment camps for Japanese-Americans were just as bad as the Nazi concentration camps.
It’s a sentiment I see a lot and although I know it’s trying to shed light on racism to me it trivializes the horrors Jews and other faced in those camps.
Yeah I've seen that, I've seen a lot of attempts to compare the Holocaust with other things always with the subtext of "shut up Jews, you didn't have it that bad" there's a term for it, "Holocaust Revisionism" where you don't deny it but you downplay it
any ways I've seen a lot of this kind of thing lashing out at Jews because people "don't learn about X" or saying things like "at least Anne Frank could hide" or this particularly famous case from a few years ago
"fuck Anne Frank"
I think this is an outgrowth of two things
the death of complex thought, people right now it our moment have lost the ability to hold in their brains complicated thoughts, such as "not all bad things are equally bad, some bad things are worse than other bad things" So was Japanese internment bad and a crime against humanity and a stain on American history? yes 100% all of those, but its not downplaying any of those things or making Japanese internment okay to recognize the basic fact that humanity has done worse things, Stalin's forced labor camps, or the forced labor camps in China and North Korea rn are worse, and of course the Holocaust with its goal of the destruction of the Jews was worse.
some people are uncomfortable with the idea that white people can suffer historic crimes. Now we can debate if Jews are white, I'd say no pretty clearly not, but whatever, it doesn't matter it doesn't make racism not real to say that sometimes people we see as white are targeted for historic injustices, and indeed often just because the racism they faced doesn't fit in our current 21st century American frame of reference for what is racist, doesn't make it any less racist at the time
and finally its just antisemitism, people are uncomfortable with Jewish suffering, because it humanizes us, and we shouldn't be human in their eyes. There's a book called "People Love Dead Jews" I think thats optimistic I don't think they like us dead even.

Adventuresses We Love – Annie Londonderry In 1894, two Boston businessmen reportedly made a $10,000 bet that no woman could bicycle around the world in 15 months or less. Annie Cohen Kochopsky took them up on that bet. To help finance the trip, Kochopsky sought out sponsors and sold ad space on her bike. Her first sponsor was Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Company. They agreed to pay $100 in exchange for her carrying an advertising placard for them, and if she would agree to go by the name Annie Londonderry for the duration of the adventure. Annie readily agreed. On June 27, 1894, despite having only learned how to ride a bike a couple of days earlier, Londonderry set out from her home in Boston’s Beacon Hill and headed west. She carried with her a change of clothes and her pearl handled revolver. She arrived in Chicago that September, and realized she had a problem. Winter was coming fast, and there was no way she’d be able to cross the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains when the snows came. So, she reversed course and rode back to Boston. Where she started over, this time heading east. She rode to New York, jumped a steamer to France, then biked to Marseilles. From there her travels took her through the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Russia, North Korea, China, and Japan. She left Yokohama and sailed to San Francisco, then spent the next six months bicycling across the Southwest and Midwest. Londonderry reported that she was held captive while biking across China at the height of the Sino-Japanese War. Still, it seems the greatest dangers she faced were from animals - she and another cyclist were nearly killed by a runaway horse and rider in California; while a collision with a herd of pigs in Iowa left her with a broken wrist. Londonderry arrived back in Chicago on September 12, 1895, and claimed her prize. She’d made the trip with 2 weeks to spare, becoming in the process the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle. Anne Cohen Kochopsky, aka Annie Londonderry died from a stroke on November 11, 1947. She was 77 years old.

Happy birthday, Doffy.
I made a digital version of the INWARD drawing. And if you're up to it, I found that mini-essay I wrote for Doflamingo and why I paired him up with the hibiscus flower.
The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, also called Chinese hibiscus, China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus, rose mallow, and shoeblackplant, it is a tropical hibiscus from the Malvaceae family. Small fun fact that doesn’t relate to Doflamingo: Hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti, Malaysia, and South Korea. A yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii, USA.
Depending on where you get your information, the hibiscus can represent a myriad of things. The most common themes I noticed include beauty, charm, love, romance, wealth, fleeting beauty, and glory. For a tribal dad, it may mean power and respect. To give the hibiscus as a gift can mean different things depending on color. Giving this flower as a gift may mean “Seize the opportunity.” As it may symbolize glory, only those who are considered the best and most beautiful are worthy enough to receive it.
I chose this flower for Doflamingo because he’s pretty in pink, for one, and he has a tropical theme attached to him, thanks to Dressrosa. But in all seriousness, it was because of the balance of power in One Piece that he dictated through the Underground and black market. Doflamingo blackmailed the World Government and strives to win at the cost of other people's lives. The hibiscus is beautiful and enticing to look at. It was given as a gift only to those “worthy” of its beauty. Unfortunately, those delicate petals eventually dry up, and their glorious presence diminishes. His control and influence did not last for eternity, and his beautifully decorated Dressrosa turned sour, a fleeting beauty.
The specific colors I chose are purple, pink, and red. Purple symbolizes higher class, knowledge, and mystery. Like his alias Joker, Doflamingo was an enigma until his backstory and abilities were revealed, which made him even more extraordinary. Pink hibiscus mainly symbolizes friendship and many types of love. Pink is also here because I love and adore him, but I've mentioned that before. Red symbolizes the obvious, passion, love, and romance. From the Donquixote family’s origins in Dressrosa, Doflamingo himself burns with that fiery desire (and sadism) to satiate his every whim and darkest wants, whether it’s to destroy everything the Celestial Dragon’s reign over, to kill his enemies, or party with his poolside harem.
There (the South Pacific) a red hibiscus behind a girl’s right ear meant “I have a lover.” Behind her left ear, it meant “I seek a lover.” Behind both: “I have a lover and I seek a lover.” (Scoble, Gretchen, and Ann Field. The Meaning of Flowers: Chronicle Books, 1998.) I just thought this excerpt was really cute.
. . .
. .
.
Where did I get all that info? Minus the book excerpt, idk. I wrote this about 5 years ago when I was active in Amino.

hindsight (chapter 1) | park chanyeol x reader
a/n: finally, i did some few alterations on how the first chapter would look like, i hope all the readers would be able to understand how my fictional mind is taking its place, but here you are! thanks for staying tuned for the publishing of the first chapter.
disclaimer: this is a work of fiction, everything that is mentioned does not depict facts.
warning: mention of cuss words
word count: 3.9k words
pictures are from pinterest**
THE SCHOOL uniform was being hung on the hook by the careful maids as my eyes were adjusting to my newly found consciousness. The school emblem is printed on the jacket, and the plaid skirt has a hem that ends on the knee. Then Anne entered the room with a smile. "Good morning, Young Miss," she said.
"Good morning, Anne, I replied.
Anne smiled dearly and opened the curtains, which allowed the rays of the sun to enter the room. Then the delightful Charity entered the room with an iPad in hand.
"Young Miss, I hope you had a wonderful night's rest. Here is your schedule for today, she says as she hands me the iPad. I rolled my eyes at the continuous scheduled activities. In the world of elite society, you must always make publicity, as we are prominent figures representing our heritage far from home.
Our Asian elite society has been the most refined selection of people in the east coast, specifically in Manhattan where most of the members of the high-class people are situated, as for my family who are one of the upper elites, we were expected to live in the most elegant way possible and that is how we managed to own an estate in Upper East Side of NYC, most aristocratic families also reside with us in this area, our noble families with what we say, ‘of blood’ reside in a foreign country for multiple of reasons, and that is first, to preserve the remaining Asian nobility from eradicated monarchial governments, our ancestors way back before, as monarchial form of government was being threatened and new forms were arising, their titles were being threatened and some people made violent attempts on ending the lives of the nobility, so that is how with all the money they had left, fled to America.
"I thought we had cleared out all the events for the rest of this month. Was it not possible to inform me there were some to follow?" I asked her as I palmed my forehead.
Charity remained silent, prompting me to apologize for my erratic behavior: "Char, I am sorry."
She sighed, "It’s alright, Young Miss. I understand the frustration." She completely assured me that my anger is valid. I felt embarrassment and decided to find purchase from the comfort of my comforter, and Anne immediately tapped on my shoulder as it was her time to make the bed, eliciting a growl as I sat up and grabbed my phone from the nightstand.
"Char. Do you mind giving me more details about this event I am going to?" I asked her. I glanced to see that she was ensuring that my uniform was clean and ironed well, as Mom is a bit strict about going outside with cloth wrinkles; she says that is very peasant style.
Charity opened her iPad as she assessed this later event: "The yangban association hosted a charity auction for children of orphanages all across South Korea, and as the lady of the Byun household who is about to debut anytime soon, you have to show that you are prepared." Charity explains as I step out of the comfortable bed. The lace nightgown, with its fabric that can be felt on my skin, Then I arranged the bed to not add more work for Anne and the rest of the maids.
Our family’s roots originate back in Korea, and after the Japanese seized our land, my great-grandfather had to take his family to America for safety as our titles were stripped from us together with the royal family. The title given to us from the Yangban was the highest ranking in the caste system of the Joseon dynasty. As we lost identification as members of the yangban, our family was referred to as refugees only and not those of respectable position, just like we once used to. However, as Asian monarchies started to falter in power, they also found refuge in America.
As part of the peace treaty that was signed by Japan with the U.S. after the war, as atonement for causing disruption, the noble clans that fled from Korea were given the right to reestablish their titles with the help of the surviving Royal family of Korea where they can be situated in the area of Manhattan, and they were the highest noble being looked up by all members of the elite society today as they are the major restorationist of our society—they all refer to this as the Day of Miracle, and just like those of European nobility structure and inspired from the Goryeo’s nobility structure as well, we were granted of Dukedom, Earldom, Viscounty and Baron, and the Byun family was entitled to Dukedom to my grandfather and passed down to my father, and will be in turn passed down to my brother, Baekhyun. The secret royal family back at that time in the reestablishment of our titles, they chose 9 most trustworthy men to look over to the major provinces of the country and that is how my father, Byun Min became the duke of South Jeolla province, and the surviving members of the yangban most especially military leaders were granted Earldoms and Barons, and while the remaining Joseon intellectuals who were not granted Dukedoms were given the Viscounty title, with that formed the House of Yangban comprising of Korea’s nobility, and they are given the authority as condition of the U.S. for aiding Korea back in the Korean War to authorize the nobility to be involved in the political affairs with the connections from the secret royal family.
"School day, first period, you have Algebra that will be taken up for the rest of the morning and Literature after lunch; afterwards, you have to meet your instructor as it is a Monday; and then, once you are home, you will meet up with Haley for your hair and makeup for this evening’s event."
What an eventful day!
My friend, Angel, also said that her family would show up at the Masquerade charity event later that evening. Although Angel’s family is not part of yangban and is one of the lower elites of Elite High Society, through her mother’s connections with the head of yangban, their family was invited to this high-class event.
The elite high society held a caste system that the Yi Clan created, which was the upper elite, mainly aristocrats, as they were the real purpose for the establishment of the society. The rest are called the lower elites, which follow the class of businessowners filled with Asian billionaires and millionaires, but as far as I am concerned, they also have their own ranking system, and lastly, the most recent addition to the lower elite society are Asian celebrities; they formally decided to add celebrities as they are important for publicity.
Angel was part of the businessowner class, and their father is a well-known billionaire.
Hearing from my friend Angel that she would also be attending the charity event had me at peace because sometimes I hate showing up to these kinds of functions, and they do bore me every single damn time.
Once we were fully settled into the class, Sir Hwang finally entered the room and now introduced the topic, the objectives, and the date of the quiz.
After class, Angel and I exited the room as I noticed the familiar figure lurking around the hallways of the school. "Hey, sis. This evening’s charity event—are you going to attend?" He asked.
"Yeah, and what about it?" I asked while reorganizing my textbooks inside the locker.
Baekhyun pleaded, "Can you tell Mom and Dad that I can’t come over for the auction event later? Hearing this, I slammed my notebook against the expanse of his chest. "Hey! You need to be there. I don’t want you to get scolded by Dad for saying that you are irresponsible, and all those things that he is saying about you hurt my feelings, I whined at him.
"You really, for sure, don’t want me to get scolded?" Baekhyun quirked a brow. I chuckled and pleaded with him to go, but he said about bringing his best friend, which is going to throw Dad off again.
Well, my brother’s best friend belongs to the businessowners class, which makes my dad bitter about his son hanging out with boys with no certain future at all, which is what aristocrats think of businessowners. My dad thinks that Elite high society should only be limited to those of aristocrats and not people with no class despite owning a very large amount of money. "You should really stop hanging out with that dude, honestly," I advised him.
With the ongoing caste system that has created division and inequality among the elites, this has led to reforms among the children of lower and upper elites. People of upper elites are for people of upper elites in different engagements, and most especially marriage, the head of yangban strictly wants to impose the idea that to show gratitude to the secret royal family, we must keep our blood blue. That is why all children of upper elites also have after-school classes in the afternoon to teach us the way of the yangban and the morals.
But as our elite society struggles to modernize, some of the aristocrats break the normality and stereotype of not mingling with other people, but the majority, with their moral views and principles, regard this as a preposterous act of gratitude. What happened to the famous Confucian moral of karma?
Baekhyun sighed, C'mon, Cali, don’t be like Dad as well; we should stick up for each other."
"Sure thing, and yet here you are telling me earlier about your plans to ditch me." Baekhyun laughed and replied, "Fine. I will be there with Chanyeol." I simply sighed as I made my way to the lounge to eat lunch with Angel.
The white gown paired with a feathery white mask was the outfit that my mom had planned out for me. She shared with me her thoughts about how I look clean and innocent in white. The stylists then went inside my room and smiled. "This is the third time this month, Young Miss." I chuckled at her comment.
"Look forward to more. The debutante season is fast approaching." I added further and grinned at Haley. Then my mom entered the room and greeted Haley, saying, "Haley, about Calista’s makeup. Please make her look innocent, and for the hair, I want it loose with soft curls. For the accessories, let Cali choose." Mother spoke softly to Haley and the rest of the stylists.
After she was done discussing the details, she looked at me through the mirror and held my shoulder, saying, "Dearest, I’ll leave you for a while. See you later, beautiful." She kissed my cheeks and went straight for the door to exit my room.
Haley was amazing as she handled the styling process, and now it's as if mom’s desires were printed onto my face. I loved the look and thanked Haley for an amazing job.
Anne then entered the room and complimented, "You look beautiful, Young Miss." She spoke with a grin. Then the maids began unzipping the fabric of the ggown, and since I already wore the underdress while my makeup was being prepared, I searched through the drawers of the display table in the middle of the closet, where rows of jewelry were placed. Once I was ready for the event, I sprayed my favorite Jo Malone perfume.
Baekhyun later informed me that he won’t hitch a ride with us and is going to drive with Chanyeol to the event. "When will that boy straighten up?" Dad expressed his frustration about Baekhyun. He was his heir, after all.
"Min, let the boy savor the last moments of his high school." My mom ensures that Baekhyun will straighten up at the right time. "Bit-na, that boy in the next two months will graduate and choose Harvard, Yale, or Stanford. Oxford, Cambridge, and the rest of the good schools of his choice. When in his dictionary will he understand the definition of professionalism? Now that I know that the only heir of Park Enterprise is part of his circle!" Dad expressed his madness. My dad is a bit of an egoistic man; well, owning such a company and earning his pride with it made him be like this. Back when I was still in my toddler years, I remember that he was still like Baekhyun—more of a goof ball and a laughing festive in the room—and the monthly visits to grand-pabi except when he died when I reached the glorious age of fifteen, and now all the matters are left in his hands.
But Mom was still the regular Mom; she was caring but demanding; she was softspoken but insulting; she was kind but sometimes looked down at me with disdain. Imagine doing that to your only daughter. My thoughts stopped flowing when she calmed Dad with a chuckle: "Aigoo Min, admit it; that was the only way that I got attracted to you. Baekhyun with that attitude will find himself a beautiful lady soon." She assured dad there was nothing wrong at all.
The Met was still the same since the time that mother hosted that party; the Met is a regular setting that almost all the Yangban use for functions like this and other aristocratic houses.
My eyes searched for Angel, and she was nowhere to be found. I sighed and chose to isolate myself in a nearby garden and perhaps wait there for a moment while her family arrived at the event. However, my desires for isolation were cut short when Mom pulled me to a group of ladies conversing on the side.
"There you are, Cali!" Mom greets, and I notice that she is not alone and is accompanied by a group of ladies that look familiar. Ah, those were the madhatters that Angel and I used to call. They sort of know by heart and by mouth the living conditions of the elite society from manners, but not from control of the mouth. Put them together in a room and make a mess, and you won’t be sleeping comfortably during the night for the next few months considering their chatter that can potentially destroy someone.
For all I know, they are the ones spreading gossip around the upper elite.
Lady Hee looked absolutely dashing with her baby blue mask designed with gold sparks all over it, saying, "I have the best venue in mind for your eighteenth birthday, which also reminds me that it marks your debut to high society!—and they’re also the traditional females. Since most of them are members of the Yangban Association, they are pretty meticulous, especially when representatives like us from the Yangban House are concerned.
Lady Hee announced, "In Lake Como, my dearest."
This had rendered me silent. "In Italy, your ladyship?" I asked her politely as Mom was observing us.
She nodded with excitement and said, "You will appreciate how fine that place would be, Calista." She advised me to choose that place instead.
"I’m afraid your ladyship has gone over the top, I replied.
"Byun Calista." My mom scolded me.
I held it in instead and replied, "On second thought, Lake Como would be fine. My apologies for answering in a bad tone when you’re doing us a favor."
Then I saw Angel's family arrive. "How about we discuss my debut plans further next time when my mom has finally reserved Lake Como? I smiled—and that was the fakest smile I can pull. "Excuse me, ladies." I bid and finally sighed in relief that I got out of it; it was a hassle communicating with those kinds of people. They are too close-minded.
"I saw you back there with the madhatters chattering away with your mom. Are you alright?" Angel asked. I nodded. "It looks like I am celebrating my debut in Italy."
She laughed. "Do you think they are pulling a secret plan to embarrass you, Cali?"
I groaned and rolled my eyes. "Feels more like it, Angel. I just want to celebrate my birthday by just going on a shopping spree in the Upper East Side and hiding away in South France, I ranted.
Angel examined my white gown and the white mask. "Not to mention you look so beautiful and divine today, Cali!" She complimented. I chuckled, "Yes, Angel. You look stunning tonight as well, I assured her, which elicited a laugh from Angel.
"Angel, we are leaving! She exclaimed. But she only got here!
She added, "If not for your mother, Calista, you two would still be conversing happily." She spoke.
I sighed. "What did my mother do again, auntie?" I queried. Angel also conditioned her mother by asking a few questions here and there, and she assured her daughter that she was alright and fine, but she explained how my mother and the rest of the madhatters only invited her to be their source of comedic outbursts at the party. I groaned in frustration at how much my mother and the rest of the aristocratic ladies are supposed to be acting within their morals, and yet here they are insulting Angel’s mother.
"I apologize on her behalf; I’ll make sure that she won’t do it next time." Angel’s mother smiled, which prompted Angel to also bid her goodbyes. "See you at school tomorrow, alright?" She said, and I nodded, and we both hugged before she left.
The idea of isolation came back to mind, and thus I made my way through the garden to at least put every noise inside behind me and think straight. I pulled a dime from my clutch and exclaimed, "Ugh. I hate it here." I exclaimed with an annoyed tone and tossed the coin to the fountain as it made a blobbing noise.
"Same with you." A masculine tone disrupted my moment and I faced a man with a black mask wearing a tuxedo with a matching bowtie. His hair was styled, his lips were a bit glossy, and he had dark chocolate orbs. "At least I am not the only one feeling the same thing, I replied as I searched through my clutch again, not minding about this man in front of me.
After finding another dime that I found in my bag, I handed it to him, and he broke into a smile on his face.
"A dime?" He asked with a curious tone. He was not thinking clearly at all. Well, I would not be thinking the same way if he were in my position.
My eyes darted to him. "Toss it; don’t keep it." I scoffed.
"You know these don’t actually work, he said, and I glanced at him.
"Still. Does it still matter when these wishes come true?"
"No matter how much you wish, in the end you would somehow end up regretting it. So, I don’t expect, and I don’t have a piggy bank either." I explained to him, and he ended up laughing at my reasoning.
But he still tossed the coin into the fountain, and silence remained, as if he were making a wish. Even though I don’t believe in these wishing fountains and all, I hope whatever this man is wishing doesn’t come true.
"Have I seen you somewhere?" He asked.
I smirked and answered, "Is this not the whole point of masquerade?"
"I did not agree on the fact that it would hinder me from seeing your beauty, he replied.
He is flirting with me! Such a creep! I was stabilizing myself in case this man is a stalker or someone who can be potentially dangerous. "Stop with the flirting." I warned him and was ready to walk away, but when I heard his voice, I stopped any further movement.
"Too bad a Duke must find himself a wife." I was surprised by what he said, which made me scoff, and I made a vomiting sound just to freak him out, perhaps.
"I’m sorry, Sir. I think you have mistaken me for some prostitute, but just so you know I am not, don’t pick me up as if I am some desperate woman, and has it not occurred to you that children of aristocrats are betrothed? We can’t pick who we exactly want to marry."
He laughed. "Okay, chill, woman. I’ll make sure that you won’t happen to be engaged to me."
I rolled my eyes and said, "Go ahead, and I’ll make sure of that." I spoke and strutted my way out of the garden. I was exhausted from bickering and the madhatters as well, and I wanted to go back home.
At least I know someone.
"Going once, going twice... Sold to His grace, Duke of South Jeolla, he announced.
Then I saw Baekhyun clapping happily like a seal, and then I strutted towards him and recognized that I was walking towards him. Hey, sis, you look beautiful." He smiled as he eyed me from head to toe.
"Ew, Stop it. Take me home." I commanded him to. His brows furrowed again. "Don’t you dare fucking ask." I pointed a finger at him. He placed down his glass of whisky and said, "You’re perfectly able to drive?" I made sure to condition him first. He nodded, smiled at me, and grabbed the bunch of keys with that clinking sound. "Let’s go, sis." I guess he was also eager to leave; at least I am not alone.
I went to my mom and told her that I wanted to go home and had studying as an excuse.
"Okay, dear. Be careful on your way home." She kissed my cheeks and had to bid farewell to my dad as well. Since I would only be stuck inside my room, barely make any movement, and sleep afterwards.
Then I rushed towards Baekhyun and said, "Let’s get out of this shithole."
-
Wow, this car runs so smoothly, and since when did dad gift you a Rolls-Royce Boat Tail? " I asked him, then he shook his head. "I wish," He chuckled, and then I was baffled.
"The fuck, whose car is this then?" I yelled at him. I’m too young to be accused of kidnapping!
"Chill. This is Chanyeol’s car! He exclaimed.
Flabbergasted, "The fuck, Baekhyun!" I yelled.
"Cali, we’re about to crash if you don’t stop yelling at me!" Baekhyun complained. I tried to calm myself down. I looked over to my window and then decided to remain silent instead and not speak of anything.
Baekhyun initiated another talk: "Is it me or you have some sort of distaste against my friend? I gazed at him and raised a brow. "You have eight friends. Be specific, I told him.
"Park Chanyeol in particular, he said. Oh, no. He was getting into that subject.
I decided to distract myself with my phone that was in my clutch. "Yeah, and what about him?" I asked him to try to act dumb.
Baekhyun spoke, "Don’t act all dumb, Calista. You have known him since when you were in fifth grade."
"I don’t want to talk about your best friend, Baek, I pleaded, yet he insisted as he rested his other arm from the steering wheel and his left hand manipulating the wheel, and I could see the gifted Rolex on his wrist.
"Byun Calista, you had a crush on Park Chanyeol. I knew about it ever since." Wow, imagine hearing it from him.

Love u, byeeeeee🩷
OMG this made me so happy!!!!! I'm a nobody and you want to know about me?!?!? 😭means the world to me!!!❤️I love you !!!!!
I did try to answer all of the questions and I thought I posted it but I am new with posting so please forgive me! Also, I'm an over sharer so I'm sorry in advance for that too!
What is your nickname?
Lately, my colleagues have been calling me Jay. Other times I'm Jen or Jenni.
When is your birthday?
4/3 :)
What was your longest relationship?
I've only been in one serious relationship and those were the hardest 4 years of my lifeeeee! Seriously, barely made out alive. 😮💨
What is your favorite book?
I have so mannnnyyy! It's so hard to pick one but I'll share a few that actually caught my attention and still have resonated with me:
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
Tony and Susan by Austin Wright
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
I'm thinking of ending things by Iain Reid
I honestly have so many more, but these are the ones I have read recently and absolutely loved. Also, Fredrik Backman is currently my fav author so I definitely recommend checking him out !
What is something you're insecure about?
My appearance for sure. I don't feel confident in my looks whatsoever haha. I feel like I am fugly most of the time but that just what has been embedded in my brain since I was younger. Also, I've recently have gotten insecure with my voice. Which is so random but I kind of hate my voice LOL.
5 Male celebrity crushes
Jake Gyllenhaal (obvy LOL), Pedro Pescal, Jaime Camil, Tenoch Huerta, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I honestly have many more and they are all from Novelas. That is all I grew up watching with my mom hehe.
5 Female celebrity crushes
Elizabeth Olsen, Emma D'arcy, Scarlett Johanssan, Ana de Armas, Anne Hathaway and again, I am many many moorreee.
What is your dream job?
I always wanted to do something in music or theatre. A singer or actor. I was a huge choir nerd in high school. I even did piano lessons for a few years. On my last year of high school, I ended up doing theatre and it was so much fun! I did plays and that experience really made me love theatre. Maybe one day in the future... 🙏
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?
I haven't accomplished much in life to be honest so I don't know what I would consider an accomplishment. Maybe being able to learn different professions throughout the years. I am a Certified Patient Care Tech and all though I am not even that work field anymore, I still very much enjoyed learning about the healthcare process and what different titles mean when it comes to taking care of patient and getting the help that they need.
What is a fact about you that nobody would believe?
I have no clueeeeeeeee......maybe that I'm from MX ?? LOL My accent is completely gone now from the 12 years that I've lived in the States. Which is so sad cause not only do I suck at speaking English, my Spanish is going down hill too.. I'm slowly turning into a sabo kid!! 😭😭
What were your highs and lows for this last month?
Lately, my lows have been just feeling very lost and out of place. I feel like I should be at a certain point in my life but I am so far from reaching it or maybe I won't ever come close but yeah, its a very crappy feeling. My high this month is definitely receiving this ask from you. Made my day 100% better! ❤️
Where is somewhere you'd like to visit?
I have sooooooo many places I would like to visit!!! In States, I would love to visit New York, Florida for Universal Studios and World Disney. Out of States, I would love to visit Sweden, Italy, Japan, South Korea.
How do you de-stress?
I nap like my life depends on it. I'm stressed, NAP. Upset, NAP. Happy, NAP. Sad, Nap. I could rot happily in my bed if I could get paid for it.
What are your favorite apps besides tumblr?
I honestly only mainly use Tumblr and Tiktok LOL they control my life right now. I don't think I use any other apps. Maybe Amazon and Barnes & Nobles 😁
Describe yourself in one sentence.
Lover girl in a world where love no longer exists. 🫠
What do you think makes you attractive?
I don't know actually... I would like to say my personality perhaps? I think I'm pretty cool I think I'm quite hilarious actually haha. I had someone once say that my eyes and smile was the most attractive thing about me, but I think the opposite.
What is something you're really good at?
Procrastinating. I procrastinate so good that when the deadline of something is like 5 minutes away, I overwork and stress myself out so bad that my work just comes out beautifully. I work amazing under extreme and stressful situations. Not healthy at all so please don't try!!!!
What is something you're really bad at?
Math. Which is funny because I was doing accountant work for a Retail store as my first job and I was amazing. Maybe it was the power I felt while holding thousands of dollars a night while making minimum wage 🥲LOL
A time that you told a lie.
I never lie, I speak my truth all the time but while I was in my first serious relationship, I lied ALOT about being okay and happy. It was such unhealthy relationship for me and I wanted to keep the peace at all times that I lied a lot to my family. Trust me when I say, even if they are older, does not mean they are mature. Learned that the hard way.
What's a totally random and useless fact that you know?
Our brain doesn't know our eyeballs exist and if they did know, they would attack them. You can permanently go blind if our brain was like, "wait a min, where did they come from??" Freaking GNARLY!
Who knows you the best?
My mommy ❤️
What is your most prized possession?
I am in LOVE with V for Vendetta. From the moment I saw it back when my dad would let us rent random movies from Blockbusters, I just love it. I read the comics and love the theatrics of how V is and how beautifully he was portrayed by Hugh Weaving. I ended up buying a screenplay book that contains the directors notes and small changes that were made that didn't make it to the movie and that is my most prized possession. Definitely fueled my love for acting and everything that comes from just being able to shoot a movie.
What is your longest friendship?
9 years but unfortunately, life drifted us apart :(
When did you first feel like an adult?
When I did my taxes for the first time. I was not ready to adult, and I still can't adult correctly but surviving!
Do you/ Have you played any sports?
Yes, volleyball!!!! My family used to play it all time when we lived in MX. I turn into a competitive monster.
How are you feeling right now?
Tired and hungry. I've been surviving on Moster Energy drinks these last few days.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I'm honestly neither. I used to be able to stay up all night but now, I can barely wake up early and can barely stay awake lol I'm old now.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
I do, I'm a hopeless romantic.
Favorite song lyrics right now?
I've been listening to sad songs lately. Currently have I Can't Make You Love Me by Bon Iver on a constant loop. "I'll close my eyes, then I won't see. The love you don't feel when you're holding me. Morning will come and I'll do what's right. Give me 'til then to give up this fight." UGH gets me every time! 😭
What does self care look like for you?
Honestly, a nice hot bath in a candle lit bathroom, bright enough to be able to read a book and because I love in AZ, thunderstorm sounds in the background. My definition of self care ❤️
Describe yourself with 3 singers.
This is on hard! I don't know. Ummmmmm can I say 3 of my favorite singers? Amy Lee from Evanescence, RAYE, and Beyonce.
What makes you nervous?
Knowing that we have only explore 5% of the ocean and ocean nearly takes 70% of our planet. Not sure what phobia that is but thinking about that makes me nervous. Also meeting new people. I'm very shy so I get super nervous and anxious.
What’s a pet peeve you have?
When I am with someone and I am sharing something or just telling them something and they are on their phone, not listening at all. Then they have the audacity to say, "Huh?" Like no thank you. The excitement is over and now I'm hurt. 🥲
What will always make you cry?
Thinking about my life. Kidding! I am a huge crybaby so it doesn't take much to make me cry. Show me a sad video, I'll cry a river.
What kind of first impression do you think you make on people?
I don't know, I smile a lot so maybe they form some kind of opinion based on that. I hope it's all good first impressions though. 😊
Special Question: What's your biggest fear?
I have a lot of fears and some may seem so little. I am afraid of never being able to accomplish or become the person I dreamt of being. I'm afraid that I will never get back on track with how I envisioned I would be right now at 24. It's dumb little things that scare me. Never finding love and having a family of my own or not being able to be fully happy. Sometimes it feels like something is missing and maybe that's why I have been feeling lost lately. Those are biggest fears.
THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!!! I really enjoyed answering these questions and would totally love to see you answering them too!!!!!! Love you!!!❤️❤️❤️

The History of Swingo, Part 8: The Show Must Go On
(Harriet Caplan-Dean as Catherine Parr. Photographed by @paigeleigh_photography on Instagram.)
(13) Harriet Caplan-Dean was the swing on the 2022-23 UK tour, although she has returned as an emergency or temporary cover on both the tour and the West End multiple times since leaving the show. She wore the silver swing costume with pants and Cleves variations. Harriet very nearly overtook Harriet Watson with the most emergency cover shows performed, although Harriet Watson still remains on top. Currently, Harriet is performing in the ensemble of & Juliet, also covering Anne Hathaway and the Nurse.
Days to complete Swingo: 85
Date completed: June 9th, 2022
Performance stats:
Fun Fact: Harriet has almost certainly performed in Six in more countries than any other non-cruise performer, as the UK tour 4.0 performed in South Korea and she joined the 5.0 tour as a temporary swing while they were in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
(Leesa Tulley performing as Catherine of Aragon. Photographed by @paigeleigh_photography on Instagram.)
(15) Leesa Tulley was the alternate Boleyn/Howard in the 22-23 UK tour cast and wore the orange alternate costume for roles other than her first covers. After her tour contract ended, she performed on the West End as an emergency cover many times in both her first and second cover roles (Seymour/Parr). Currently, Leesa is starring as Nancy in the new Marlow and Moss musical Why Am I So Single?.
Days to complete Swingo: 339
Date completed: February 18th, 2023
Performance stats:
Fun Fact: Leesa seems to have fallen prey to what fans call the Orange Alt Curse, where performers who wore the orange alternate costume seem to be more likely to return to the show after leaving. The most notable victim is Harriet Watson, but Hana Stewart and Danielle Rose were also clearly affected.

Let's talk about Chimney, Albert, and their father
I think this is an exercise in perspective. (I've been noodling on these thoughts for a while, and then I came across some posts about perspective, see my last two reblogs, and suddenly decided that it might be worth it to write the thoughts down.) Because I think Chimney and Albert have very different perspectives of their father, but somehow barely anyone in fandom seems to even contemplate that, let alone understand it.
This might be considered cricical of Chimney, though I tried to stay very near to the facts we have without judgement except for the very last paragraph.
Short tangent before we come to the real topic of this post, but Chimney's age is super ambiguous, so I think there needs to be some discussion about it first. We know that Chimney was old enough to babysit Kevin, so he was probably eight to ten years older than Kevin. Kevin was working as a bartender before he and Chimney became firefighters. So he is probably 21 at that point, making Chimney around 30 when he and Keven joined the fire academy. That happened around 14 years before Albert shows up in the show where he says he finished college and left Korea to escape their father. So at that point, Albert is probably anything between 20 and 22. That makes Chimney more than twenty years older than him.
So much for the age gap between Albert and Chimney. It basically means they are a whole generation apart.
What do we know about Chimney's early life? He told Hen that he came to LA with his parents when he was five or six (I don't remember exactly and am too lazy to look it up) and that his family was supposed to be here for two years. It's heavily implied that Han Sang's work was the reason. (I will at least use the right order for the name, even if the show can't bother with that and chose a very unlikely format for a Korean name. I might be salty about this.) But those two years turned into six years.
We also know that it was Jee-Yun Senior's decision to stay in LA. She didn't want to go back with her husband to Korea when he had to return for his job. She made the decision to take her son and stay in LA. And I can imagine that Han Sang saw himself with no other choice but to return to Korea for his work so he would be able to provide for his family.
Chimney would have been eleven or twelve at that point. As a pre-teen, you don't necessarily know everything that goes on between your parents. Especially if your parents decide to keep things from you because they are fighting and don't want you to see them fight. And I think they decided to keep a lot of things from Chimney. So Chimney basically only knows that he and his mother stayed and his father left them. And he clearly never wondered how it came to that. He blames his father for that split in their family without a question and absolves his mother from all fault.
Which is not that much of a surprise. We know that Chimney is the kind of person who twists the narrative around to make himself stand out better, to put the blame for things going wrong on others. (We see that in s1 with Tatiana, we see that in Chimney Begins in practically every snippet before the fire at the bar, we see it again in his spiral after Maddie leaves because of her PPD when he invents some fantasy about Doug instead of admitting that he failed Maddie.) From the way we see him talk about his mother, he idealizes her and doesn't accept even the possibility of any fault on her part. So of course he would project all the fault for the separation of his family on his father.
Then his mother became sick not too much later. And he shared with Hen that he accompanied his mother to doctor appointments to translate for her. Which is, in my opinion, one of the biggest clues that Jee-Yun Senior was anything but a mother mostly concerned about her child's well-being. She had a friend in Anne Lee who didn't hesitate to take in her child later on, but she couldn't ask that friend to go to the doctor with her instead of her very, very young son? I understand pride, but if you put your pride over your son's well-being, you are just not a good mother.
There is clearly a lot of trauma for Chimney around Jee-Yun Senior getting sick and dying. And I think he never dealt with it.
I don't think we have an exact age of when Chimney's mother died, but I still think he was a minor. A minor who was not a US citizen and whose only remaining parent wasn't even living in the US. I'm not going to do the research to figure out what all would have been needed to do to make it possible for Chimney to stay with the Lees and then later on apply for citizenship in the US. But even without that research, I think it's safe to say that there would have been a lot of work involved and that Chimney's father would have needed to be very supportive of all of that. I also think that it would have been much easier for both Chimney's father and the Lees to just send Chimney back to Korea.
But they didn't. They all did the work so that Chimney could stay because he probably couldn't imagine anything else, including his father. But trapped in the grief for his mother, I think Chimney never noticed any of it and later on never cared. Instead, all he focused on was that his father wasn't there when his mother died. Probably even without contemplating that his father's job back in Korea might have been responsible for giving his mother the best possible care at the time.
So, we have Chimney who is very bitter concerning his father and probably blaming him for things that are either not his fault at all or are equally his father's fault as they are his mother's fault. We know there is some attempt to keep connected, but I honestly think Chimney's resentment for his father colors every single interaction in a very unfavorable light. I mean, Chimney resents him enough to not even speak Korean with him when he calls. And I also think that Anne Lee's desperation we see for a moment in Chimney Begins is not only about Han Sang not being able to connect to his older son but also about Chimney's inability to truly give his father a chance.
What do we know about Albert's early life? We know he grew up with a father who had already been married in the past and lost his first wife to death. Who also has a son much older than Albert. We know both of his parents are very strict. (When Chimney calls his father to tell him about becoming a firefighter, Han Sang says that Albert's mother is very concerned about keeping Albert on schedule.)
We also know Albert showed up at Chimney's place full of excitement. That's not a young man who never heard anything more than rumors or bad tales about his much older brother. That's a young man who heard a lot about his older brother and through what he heard of him he idolized him. I think that says a lot about how their father talks about Chimney. It's also another point in the argument above that both Chimney and his father are equally responsible for the chasm between them.
We also know that while Albert was trying to escape the suffocating expectations of his parents, he kept in contact with them. He also had no problem going back to Korea and he is probably building a life there now. So overall, he has a good relationship with his parents.
Those two perspectives are so very different. But they are still both valid. They seem to contradict each other, but in the end, it's just the experience of two people in very different situations and circumstances. But neither of those two would really be able to see or understand the perspective of the other. Especially if they don't talk about it with each other. And I think Albert was disillusioned enough about Chimney after first meeting him that he never brought it up. And Chimney clearly has no interest in learning anything about his father, so why would he ask Albert about his childhood?
Under these considerations, I think it's wrong and disrespectful for Albert's perspective to say he is a bad guy for bringing his parents to LA without telling Chimney. I don't think it was a good move, but looking at it from Albert's perspective it kind of makes sense if he wants to give his father and his brother a much-needed shove to honestly talk to each other. He didn't go about it in a clever way and the storyline wasn't given enough space on the show*, but he also never had a chance to see the true chasm between Chimney and their father. Not even during the years he spent in LA.
But I think part of the problem in the way parts of the fandom are judging Chimney is also that just as Chimney is a master in pretending nothing he does and none of the consequences are his fault, certain parts of the fandom are just as much a master in this. Chimney's behavior doesn't matter, on the the behavior of the people around him. Chimney is never ever at fault, of course, and is incapable of making mistakes.
*Honestly, Han Sang mostly felt like a plot device to make the Buckley parents stand up for Buck more than anything else. Which is completely weird. But then, there has been a lot of stories in s6 that was really not handled with much care.

what are some fics that you go back and read again and again? one of my absolute favorites is Give Me Light, Give Me Life which has been orphaned but has all my favorite Winnix tropes and is extremely cute, I literally reach for this one first every time I want to reread something. I also love More Than a Team, which has some great outsider perspective on Dick and Nix as a couple and Nix being a great BIL to Ann. Also Cats & Dogs by some author you've probably never heard of. :3
what's a headcanon that you will die on that hill? tbh I'm at that point in this fandom where it's hard to clearly ID headcanon vs. Things That Are Just True, so here are some of my favorite "not technically clearly defined in the show" things in no particular order: Dick's shallow foxhole in Bastogne is just where he hangs out during the day when he's not actively at the CP, he shares Nix's more palatial one to huddle for warmth regardless if they're a couple yet. Mary Frank Sledge and various other close family members of The Boys are clumsily accepting of their relationships - or at least very don't ask don't tell about why Babe moved to Louisiana to live with a war buddy - because it did historically happen (read Coming Out Under Fire by Allan Berube if you haven't already!) and the world is depressing enough without needing to drag it into my pretendy fun times. Joe genuinely does like to read and while isn't as formally educated as Web does grow to like swapping books with him and getting into heated debates about them. When they move in together post war, he's a very critical but ultimately constructive editor of Web's articles and books. Ron becomes penpals with Lip's mom while he's in Korea. Not explicitly headcanon but it's historical truth that Gene Sledge would occasionally send the paper letter version of an angry group chat to Burgie, Snaf and their other friends when he didn't like folks interviewing him for books about the war and that is 100% a thing he and Dick both do lol. Harry often house sits for Dick and Nix's dog when they're off on adventures. Harry has also clocked them as a couple from the instant he stepped in on them arguing in "Currahee" and is just The Ultimate Bro and never says anything.
what's your favorite wip of yours? as you well know, I don't have a lot of wips currently, but I have been meaning to brush off some old finished unplublished fics including a sequel to the sledgefu soulmate au fic I posted on AO3 a million years ago and a daemon au thing with Snaf and Mary Frank Sledge.

Colossal (2016)
Colossal deals with several subjects that, in a straightforward story, would be off-putting. By sneaking them into a science-fiction kaiju film, it gives you a lot to think about when you least expect it.
Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a mess. After her boyfriend breaks up with her, she returns to her hometown and reconnects with her childhood friend-turned bartender Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). She struggles even harder than before to reign in her alcoholism just as a giant bipedal kaiju appears in Seoul, South Korea.
As you might guess from the poster, this is a movie about a woman who discovers she’s able to control a giant monster halfway across the world like it’s a motion-capture suit. It’s an unusual premise. You’re immediately intrigued. The monster only appears when she walks through a specific playground a little after 8:00 am. Why would a grown woman be in that one spot? Because she’s been up all night drinking and hanging out with a bunch of losers. If Gloria were a person whose life was tidier, it would be a non-issue. Unfortunately, the colossal beast is a problem specifically because Gloria is an alcoholic whose life has been defined by one bad decision after another.
From there, you could go in several directions. Colossal chooses to start talking about toxic masculinity, marital abuse, and the way cataclysms/tragedies in faraway countries can feel like they’re not even real. I bet you didn’t see that coming.
As Gloria comes to grips with the fact that she accidentally killed hundreds of people and demolished a good chunk of a city - albeit accidentally - she finally decides to sober up and get her act together. Unfortunately, Oscar takes issue with her change in attitude. She never explicitly said that she wanted a new boyfriend but Tim (Dan Stevens) kind of broke up with her and that left her where? Living all alone, in an empty house with no job. The way Oscar sees it, he came to her rescue and now, she owes him.
The smart thing about Colossal is that Oscar doesn't show his true colours immediately. He’s genuinely helpful when they first reconnect. Gloria’s a mess. She needs a wake-up call, a job and support. Oscar provides some of those but ultimately, wants her to stay weak. As long as she is, she will continuously need his "help”. When he figures out the connection between the playground at 8:05 a.m. and South Korea, the people there become the children imprisoned in an abusive marriage. If Gloria doesn’t do exactly what he tells her to, who knows what Oscar might do to them. Would he be willing to do what he does if those people spoke English or lived in North America? probably, but some of the early-movie goofy antics wouldn’t have happened, that’s for sure. What started off as something absurd "over there" now hits home.
Colossal is a mashup of genres whose mix says more than it could have if it were conventional. Most giant monster movies bring up environmental issues or remind us of how small we are; they don’t zoom in on a single person and ask you to re-examine their character based on how "helpful" they are. This means it doesn’t contain the giant monster tropes you would expect but that’s a good thing. The people who should see this movie wouldn’t have walked into it if what it was really about was advertised on the poster and for the rest, it’s a terrific surprise that’s subtle and smart. The ending is particularly clever and satisfying, though it does overexplain things a little bit too much. That’s the only flaw in the film.
Colossal is expertly acted, with Hathaway delivering a particularly strong performance and Sudeikis playing a creep so well it might make you suspicious of his future characters. It's smartly written, deep, thrilling, and unexpectedly fun considering the issues it tackles. (On Blu-ray, June 10, 2021)

Jumu'ah Sohbet 1 of 2: 1 March 2024
This week proved how deep and wonderous our ocean of Sufism truly is, as we were and are immersed in never-ending "heartsights" as we continue to connect to our spiritual hearts.
We began through Shaykh Nishaat's connection with another Sufi order in South Korea until Anne led us to reflect on how we each intend to enact taqwa (God-consciousness) this coming Ramadan as a multinational Tariqa (spiritual school). Bismillah (With the name of Allah) ...
#1. As an outcome of the Peace Summit in South Korea attended last year by Shaykh Nishaat, was he unsurprisingly invited once again. However, he deeply connected with another leader known as a Master of another Sufi order, Dr Alireza Nurbakhsh, of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order. On further research, my eyes welled with gratitude after stumbling on these sentiments, "The Nimatullahi Sufi Order is a spiritual discipline dedicated to the selfless service and love of all human beings." Ringing true to Shaykh Nishaat's tale of his profound connection to Dr Alireza.
Shaykh Nishaat recounted Dr Alireza's story of how his wife and him had encountered a disheveled and unkempt itinerant agricultural worker in Australia. Just as Shaykh Nishaat's earlier true tale of "mad" but noble Glen followed another true tale of a nobleman of the Australian hinterland. The latter appeared and disappeared equally mystically yet, leaving a sweet air of nobility. He appeared without much, yet he claimed he had everything for which he was only grateful! Along with his remarkable sense of gratitude, he radiated love where he could think of wishing to be married to a divorcee with children in order to be a receptacle of Divine love to heal their past sorrows.
Subhana'Allah (Glory to the Divine), that the noble Dr Alireza and his wife, had encountered an even more noble soul proving our collective Sufi focus on the power of Divine love, as a preeminent force of connection and transformation in humanity. Spiritual consciousness is, in fact, more important than wealth, fame, and the worldly comforts that most humans hunger for.
#2. Our Anne (original spiritual mother), Shaykha Muzeyyen, blew away my physical sensibilities with her breathing prompts to get us to spiritually recentre after a full week. That is because breathing through one's nose felt as mystical as feeling the presence of Allah! She said:
Take a couple of deep breaths from your nose until you can hear the breath! In and out. Not your mouth, but in and out through your nose until you can hear your breath through your nose. Can you hear your breath? Does it sound like the waves on the shore? We are all earth, everything of earth is in us!
#3. Taqwa (God-consciousness) was our chosen focus because our practice ground is coming in a matter of days through Ramadan! We are making the intention to spend Ramadan practicing taqwa. As per Shaykha Muzeyyen's soulful prompt. When we are going through our activities in Ramadan, it is when we can be self-vigilant, in following the guidelines of Allah, and watching over our deeds to conform with Allah's rights and wrongs. We are going to concentrate on keeping Allah's pleasure in mind. This will bring us tawakkul where we can put our trust in Allah. Taqwa, in its most basic sense, is a beautiful reality of turning to Allah again and again.
Just as man is naturally forgetful, the month of Ramadan is a perfect time in the year to recentre spiritually through willful taqwa by limiting our base desires of food and lust. I have gained utter emancipation from my nafs (lower-self or ego) by observing the deceivingly, simple-sounding Sufi Diet. A genius of Shaykh Taner and Shaykha Muzeyyen in still observing a modified Ramadan by paying alms toward fasting Muslims and additionally imposing a dietary restriction on oneself that is actually more difficult than the Ramadan diet!
Here, fellow mureed Gayratie, intends to observe taqwa by mastering her Ramadan crabiness, but Alhamdulillah the Sufi Diet deals with that. So beyond gastronomic forces, I can focus on taking charge of my psycho-emotional crabiness by fostering positive assumptions of Allah as the force of positive transformation within myself and many social milieu. It's almost impossible for me to be positive about myself and others. Yet, gratefully have I experienced the transformational power of reciting Shaykh Taner's Positivity Prayers in reshaping my micro-world.
#4. Shaykha Muzeyyen was wearing the cap of being the Pied Piper of our hearts. She pointed out that we have to choose whether we want to hold onto our attachments and desires, which pollute our hearts by causing confusion and angst. However, we must remember that the nafs provides us an opportunity to identify what we need to work on.
Everything around our lives, in a sense, is a virtual reality not because it isn't real but because it isn't permanent. This worldly life has an end and is finite! So, nafs and worldly life is not permanent. Our nafs, physical bodies, and our brains are created to survive through control. This is a type of micromanagement and attachment where we want to be in control, but only Allah is in control! Therefore, what is permanent? Allah is permanent as He is infinitely loving, caring, and powerful! In our worldly lives, we aim to stay positive by staying connected to Allah.
#5. Shaykha Muzeyyen thereafter powerfully turned the mirror to self-reflect on our own intentions to observe taqwa and connect to Allah this coming Ramadan in order to learn from each other as a Tariqa (spiritual school). These were some of my simply noted sentiments shared by the many striving souls of our multinational Tariqa:
- Observe with one's heart and get out of the way with one's head in order to connect with Allah and enact the right actions.
- Reconnect with nature.
- Reconnect in the morning and times of Salaah (Prayer).
- Observe taqwa through service and acting with goodwill.
- Consider Allah's happiness in one's actions.
- Physical taqwa in work and exercise as in Silat, with a connection to Allah.
- Remember Allah in every moment and cultivate a relationship therein.
- Move beyond the obsession with the future and be mindful of now in order to be responsive in that moment and leave all the scenarios to Allah when they happen!
- Use "WHO ARE YOU WITH?" as a nice, quick way to gage and connect with Allah.
- Recognise the attributes of Allah in people and everything around.
- Strengthen rabita with its deeper understanding.
- Catch and be conscious of the fleeting messages of one's heart.
- Observe taqwa through patience and tolerance.
- Relinquish the need to have control over everything and trust Allah by surrendering the outcomes.
- Detach from fears in your actions and instead bring Allah's love and mercy to the fore!
- Observe taqwa when cranky with "hanger"!
- Treat health challenges as an unwanted opportunity to stay positive about being connected to Allah!
- Observe a positivity mindset at the start of the day to make it into an eventual habit.
- Have good assumptions of everything personally happening, whether bad or good!
- Acquire a greater consciousness of one's heart.
- Practice the basics as modeling in the art of architecture.
- Extend senses far out and bring them back closer as introduced by our beloved Shaykh Taner in the past.
- Trust one's affairs to Allah.
- Try to practice gratitude and consciousness of every breath and every moment!
- Extend one's hearing sense to connect to Allah in the silence and even during conflicts!
- Find peace with our mandatory need to work in life as a manifestation of Allah's sufficiency.
In conclusion, Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) that Allah brought us seemingly different souls into following one path with like spiritual hearts that appreciate Allah’s love above all!:
Ya Wadud
