— THE GRIM REAPER'S LAWYER by MEA MONIQUE . a review

i have to start by saying i went in with high hopes and left understanding why shady goodreads users have a saying that goes something along the lines of 'well, this is definitely a kindle unlimited book'.

i'm not a literary snob, but the speed at which the quality nosedives is brutal. the book starts off strong—joyce’s introduction is engaging—but before i know it, i’m reading something that feels like a mcfly fanfiction i wrote when i was 14.

my biggest gripe with this book is the lack of character consistency. none of the characters are given the time or space to develop - not a single one. this is especially true for the main characters, to the point where their actions often contradict who we’re told they are. joyce is presented as a crème-de-la-crème lawyer (at 30, which is unrealistic and brings up the broader issue of sidelining older characters in romance, but that's a rant for another day). yet, throughout the story, she is childish as fuck, dumbing herself down, and makes terrible decisions with no logical reason behind them. sure, characters can be complex, but are we seriously supposed to believe this is the same lawyer who saved afterlife llc from a coup d'état?

aiden, aka mr. grim reaper, doesn’t fare much better. even by the end, he’s still giving off the vibe of those tiktok boyfriends who do mask kink asmr and overall he just doesn't have a consistent personality. how, as someone whose backstory includes dying because of a drunk driver, does he just overlook joyce’s drinking habits? that could’ve been a real moment of growth in their relationship, but instead, it’s a missed opportunity.

another issue is how the book starts situations but never bothers to finish them or make them matter. one quick example is a part in the book where joyce's case notes and documents are not only stolen by someone who breaks into her apartment but her friend also gets physically assaulted in the process. this incident happens and it ends. there is no repercussion or impact to the story even tho it should've mattered.

another example would be the veronica situation. joyce doesn’t hang up after a call, and veronica ends up overhearing joyce and aiden taking a first class flight to poundtown. there’s no way you can convince me joyce - a supposedly headstrong, independent, mind-your-business woman - would be totally fine with some rando overhearing her and aiden having sex, much less joke about it multiple times afterward. it just doesn’t add up with who we’re supposed to believe she is.

one of my biggest pet peeves with this book is that it tells more than it shows. there's way too much emphasis on how joyce is attracted to or horny for aiden—pages that could’ve been used to develop literally anything else. instead, we get endless descriptions of how joyce dresses and how her outfits flatter her body (huge flashbacks to my fanfic days—if this book had links, there would definitely be one to a polyvore outfit collage). and we’re constantly told how smart joyce is and how everyone is in awe of her intelligence, but her actions rarely reflect that.

the friendships don’t feel sincere, the villain’s motives are laughable, and even the central romance doesn’t really romance.

i pushed through to the end because i have a habit of sticking with things that don’t do me any good (yes, i have a therapist), but i can’t recommend this. it was a painful read.

I expected to HATE the Kim Possible movie

I put off watching it and swore I never would but Lily from How I Met Your Mother and Extreme Boredom made me check it out. It actually wasn't too bad! Cheesy as hell, some moments had my adult ass screaming "WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL" and "THAT'S CALLED LIFE, SWEETHEART!" buuuuuuuut I REALLY enjoyed my girl Shego, which is surprising because she is the only part about this movie that I had imPOSSIBLE (ha fight me) expectations of and Taylor Ortega NAILED the role. Which made me very happy. Ron's dorkiness was perfect. Also. Rufus was super cute. I like how they kinda broke the fourth wall regarding Kim's animated outfit (but REALLY wish she wore it at least at the end) and Sadie Stanley has that whittle upper lip curve same as OG Kim. Rainbow high series 5 leaks review

I never like the boy dolls and this is no exception. One of the less horrible boy face sculpts but what in gods name is that outfit. The hair looks sparkly tho so he gets a point there

I dont like her sculpt but I think the product photos just arent doing it justice? Her outfits a bit bland but I rly like her hair and makeup.

Probably my second fav from this series. I like when they go with more earthy tones and everything isn’t super vibrant. Wouldn’ve loved to see some camo on a camo green doll but im kinda obsessed with her shorts I rly like her sculpt too.

My FAVORITE from this line. Her face sculpt and makeup are super interesting to me and I LOVE her fullbody freckles. With the ruffles and the flower earrings I think shes gonna be related to monique in some way??? Props for that bc shes one of my fav dolls in rainbow high history.

slaves (S1) - the psych evals. the minute i fell in love with each character…oof. from cragen’s break, to olivia’s breakdown, to munch’s callout, then monique and elliot?? so good. and this is when i really realized how much me and olivia are alike! so yep, a top contender for sure!!

night (S6) - again, love casey novak and when she got hurt we got to see a vulnerable side of a character who was pretty reassured and tough. plus mrs. potts, doc oc, AND rocket raccoon?? amazing

raw (S7) - this was just a really good plot twisty episode and shocked me the first time i saw it with it’s ending. tough to stomach as a jewish person, though.

blast (S7) - AS A MELINDA WARNER STAN, i have nothing more to say. what a queen 💅🏼

(here’s where i confess that i’m catching up on svu i’ve missed and my knowledge of episodes is a little weak when it comes to seasons (11-21). i’ve just finished 16, 17, 18, so i’m catching up!! but apologies if ive missed a good episode!!)

“benson in trouble” (multiple seasons) - idk if i can call them favorites because that sounds wrong(?), but as a survivor i really find it cathartic to watch the episodes where olivia is in trouble (the william lewis arc, the townhouse incident, etc.). my therapist says it’s because i feel a sense of control and know what what’s about to happen, know that she will survive it and bc i see myself like her, i feel a sense of relief. tmi? ahhh

unholiest reunion (S17) - just a thrilling episode!!

heartfelt passages (S17) - dodds…. and tucker/liv!

gone baby gone (S19) - cmon, so good. but also i just love any and all scenes ever that we get of olivia being a mom

part 33 (S20) - very interesting introspect on the behind the scenes of the detectives. i really enjoyed this debate and honestly was captivated by their reactions.

Just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and I HAVE SOME THOUGHTS-

(spoilers beware)

1. this is officially my absolute favorite book. I love this SO MUCH

2. The ending straight up killed me. 3 DEATHS AT ONCE????(well, kinda spaced out, but still) fuck you for making me cry a bunch of times, Taylor Jenkins Reid.

3. Harry is amazing I love him so much and he literally deserves the world.

4. Celia Celia Celia please marry me-

5. also Evelyn. I think both are hot.

6. poor Evelyn. I know she would hate me for pitying her, but still. I can’t imagine going through half of what she’s gone through.

7. What a twist ending. Wow. I did not see this coming AT ALL. It was so good tho-

8. Harry’s death destroyed me. It’s been a while since I’ve cried during a book, and.... wow. I can’t believe it. Harry deserved so much, and then John died, and then James did too... god. Poor guy.

9. Celia and Evelyn are amazing. Yeah, there was some toxic tendencies at times, but I loved how they ended up together. I hate how soon Celia had to go, but I’m glad it was with Evelyn. She deserved that.

10. I wish we saw more of Connor. She seemed cool.

11. I loved Evelyns 8th wedding. It was simply perfect.

12. I wish they were all born in present day. They would’ve been so much more happier.

13. Evelyn reminded me so much of Marilyn Monroe. she was definitely modeled after each other, especially because Marilyn was also queer(I have evidence hmu)

14. I also wanted to see more of John and Harry. Like yeah, we saw how depressed he got after John died, but that’s still not a lot.

15. I miss the beard(with Connor, obviously) times. They were all so happy.

gotta admit i was very sceptical during the first 10ish minutes because it was so action heavy, but i already loved the TWS vibes the scene had and how it really contrasted Sam and Steve for their respective characteristics. as soon as we got to see Sam interact with his sister and nephews i was absolutely sold tho, like yas King we love us a family man! i love that Sarah called him out on his issues and i hope we revisit their disagreement about selling their parents ship. i feel like it might all blow up in his face and she'll get mad at him for getting her hopes up but we'll see, maybe he actually can save the day.

Bucky in therapy was exactly what it said on the tin and i love his therapist. solid dynamic right there. also 10/10 for that insanely creepy forced smile he puts on for rule three. i already forgot what his friend's name was because I'm mentally still at "unique. like Monique but with a U for uniqueness" but he was real cute too and even though it was kind of predictable that Bucky had killed his son, the entire thing did still pack a punch. F in the chat for both him and the cute girl Bucky ran out on.

Torres is an idiot for almost getting himself killed but it did make me realise already care about him so only minor complaints there.

overall im really surprised how much i liked this episode and cautiously optimistic to see where they're gonna take these two (or three bc Shannon is hopefully joining the boys next week??). bonus points also for more diversity in 45 minutes than any other mcu project produced in feature film length. oh, and the funky camera angles too.

the art is gorgeous but unfortunately it’s one of the only redeeming things about the story. you’re right in that the story drags on and nobody changes!! tia goes through all this character development only to.....end up right back at square one.

the entire story does jieun so so dirty. jieun is constantly made out to be the bad one, the evil woman who took ruve away from tia who spent her life trying to be the perfect partner to that dirtbag. what the narrative never goes into depth about is how jieun was literally transported from modern day korea to this brand new world with no support whatsoever so of course she clings onto ruve who offers her protection and comfort. it’s not as if jieun had bad intentions, she was just trying to survive. furthermore, jieun tried being friends with tia in their first lives but of course that made tia resent her even further. anyway after tia dies (because of ruve) the kingdom supposedly falls in tatters because ruve goes crazy with guilt or whatever and jieun is ill equipped to run an empire. which, hey isn’t her fault either! so when jieun comes back in the second life a bad bitch guess whose side i ended up taking LMAO and when she corners tia up against the wall, yeah....maybe i was shipping them....they’d make a power couple ugh....

in the end jieun is done DIRTY DIRTY

i really enjoyed seeing tia’s progress and really liked her decision to take over the house of monique instead of becoming the empress but of course she still ends up the empress anyway :/ if i’m being honest, I don’t really ship tia with anybody. i know carsein is really popular and allen is....a yandere..... but at that point I would’ve taken anybody over ruve

but yeah, i’m caught up with the translations but that’s more out of boredom. the story really is dragging on and i’m not interested seeing tia trying to excuse ruve’s behavior. even before he was supposedly “poisoned” he was a dick to her out of misplaced jealousy. while we’re at it fuck his dad too, because refusing to show your son affection because you don’t want to “coddle” him is bullshit. ruve telling tia he won’t pressure her and yet he keeps on giving on presents, trying to insert himself into her life, etc??? annoying. and ruve’s entire mommy complex with tia’s mom was uh. weird. anyway. next. 

idk maybe it’s just me but I don’t really like romances where there’s a clear....idk how to say this but imbalance??? raeliana is one of the few issekai’s I like because although noah is of a higher status than raeliana, they respect each other so much!!! like i can’t see tia ever being comfortable or at ease with ruve even though she may love him. the girl has so much unresolved trauma from her first life!!

while i do like tia, sometimes i want throttle the girl.

in the end i appreciate the “twist” ? on the usual issekai webtoon/manhwas but yeah....a shame....
