Ur take on a malec beauty and the beast au please

ugh you got me in a difficult position here because on the one hand, i do love the idea of a beauty and the beast malec au. i just think the idea of a socially isolated person who thinks themself/is perceived as monstruous and who has locked away their heart and doesn't believe they could ever be loved fits magnus like a glove. but on the other hand, i don't want to make magnus, a brown character, animalistic, for obvious reasons. and i can't really think of a way to make him monstruous that doesn't fall into animalization/beastification (both racist tropes) or ableist tropes

so i'm thinking... maybe the spell is just that people are repulsed by him/fear him automatically? like it just creates this horrible almost impossible to ignore repulsive/fear/"fight or flight activating" aura around him for absolutely no reason and makes ppl be repulsed and/or hate him. even if it doesn't change his appearance at all. it's not really a changing or shifting spell, more like a spell of hatred

which like.... i know doesn't sound like anything poc/queer people don't already go through but there is a main difference which is that it makes it impossible to find a community. like even other brown and queer people look at him and feel this... huge disgust and even fear and might even hide and so the isolation is absolutely total and it fucking hurts. and besides it is one thing (a very bad thing) to walk around and have to be on constant alert because you never know if someone is going to be violent, and have to deal with occasional comments and disgusted reactions... it's another to consistently have like, children screaming and people cowering 100% of the time without exception, you know? he's basically living the life ppl with social anxiety think they live and he has nowhere to turn to, no one who understands or who's more likely to actually want to talk to him because of his differences. there's no one to lean on. even the people who love him aren't immune to it, even if of course they are not turning their backs on him

so anyway here are my thoughts: this was totally done by camille lol beacuse the whole backstory about being mean to an elderly lady doesn't fit magnus anyway and also i just like sprinkling camille angst where i can. so after magnus finally got himself free of her and her stupid claws she hexxed him back into isolation. both as punishment (a kinda "if you don't want me, then you have no one" logic) and just to make him more vulnerable because again, abusers want you alone and isolated and away from a support network so you are more dependant on them and more likely to buy into their thwarped logic if they can immerse you in it. so she's just trying to manipulate him into getting back with her, because she wants him and most of all his power

and basically you know the drill, if he doesn't find anyone who will love him romantically until the rose withers yada yada he will die. and again she just wants to make the spell so it constantly drives home how alone he is and how he can't find anyone who will love him (except for her), and make it so he's more and more likely to come back to her as time goes by because then the spell will be broken

(sidenote: camille obviously doesn't actually love him, because anyone who does that to someone doesn't love them. but as the one who cast the spell, she can lift it whenever she wants. so all she has to do is kiss him and lift the spell and be like "see, magnus? who else would love you like this, but me? even after all these years?". and honestly if it had come to that magnus would know she was lying because there is no way this is love, none. but anyway it doesn't come to that, that's just what her plan is)

anyway it still doesn't work because magnus is done and he won't get back to her, and he particularly doesn't want to get back with her after, you know, all this trashfire. and he just sets his jaw and is like "fine" and accepts that he will live however long he still has with his friends and people he loves and away from her, basically

and like gosh sidenote but this would have been so painful for his friends. camille very deliberately made it romantic love because she knows magnus has so many fucking people who love him, but him and the immortal squad have found family dynamics, not romantic ones. so there is nothing they can do even though their love for magnus is just... so real and pure and they hate to see him like this, hate to know that right when he finally got rid of her she made sure he still couldn't go out in the world. especially since magnus has always been so damn sociable, loved to be surrounded by people and to meet them and care for them. but here he is, walking as hidden as he can and with his head down avoiding eye contact because he knows the horror is there and some children run away screaming when they see him

and i just picture this desperate little scene with raphael in particular where he's just like.... "i'll try to kiss you. we have to try" and magnus is all, "my boy, you don't even like kissing, and she was very adamant that it had to be romantic" and raphael is almost in tears like "but i do love you, goddamn it! i should be able to undo this spell" and it's so sweet that he's trying and willing to be in this really awkward position where he kisses (yikes) magnus (which is just weird especially since magnus is kind of a father figure to him) because he's just... so desperate to have him free of her, finally, once and for all, you know?

but obviously it doesn't work, not even with dot, who had a kinda fling with him in the past but doesn't really feel Romantic Love™ for him even though she does love him, it's just... not what the spell requires. and it's unfair as hell and there are lots of tears but just the fact that magnus falls asleep surrounded in a teary cuddle pile after some of the absolute worst kisses of his life because his friends/family love him enough to put themselves in such an uncomfortable position in the hopes of making him free, is enough to make him feel a little better. and the fact that they are still there for him and obviously still love him so fiercely even though looking at him now literally evokes fight or flight instincts in them is already more than anything camille could ever give him. if anything, she's proven how loved magnus is

and that helps him get through it that day and is something he tries to hold unto in the worst days, but still, it's hard and it just... sucks. it's tiring to go out in the street and always have people staring at you and to see the horror in their faces and be so isolated and never really know what might happen, if he will be attacked or harrassed or what exactly will happen. so he isolates himself more and more and soon the only people who ever see him or visit him are his friends. and fuck, do they hate seeing him like this

things settle in a weird kind of way. magnus is still living his life and working as a wizard and etc and in a way the spell even helps him have some more credibility because you know, isolated scary person is kinda what ppl expect from wizards. but he avoids having contact at all costs and mostly sends the potions they request and stuff their way, and the only ppl he sees are his friends unless he absolutely can't avoid going outside. and he's fucking miserable. and every once in a while camille will come back to be like "so, magnus, are you ready to stop with this little tantrum of yours and come back to me now? how is the rose doing, by the way?" because god forbid he catches a break

also it turns out that magnus' adoptive streak becomes even stronger because he is 1- extra lonely; and 2- empathizing more than ever with the outcasts. don't get me wrong, he always has, he's a fucking brown, bi trans man for fuck's sake. we all see ourselves in the stray dogs and lonely people one way or another. but now this is turned up to a thousand, so, you know

so he has one (1) extra kind of contact in his life which is basically with stray animals (particularly cats cuz u know, this is magnus) that he finds around in need of help. they can all leave if they want, but a lot of them stay, particularly the black cats, disabled animals, and others that have a particularly hostile environment outside. you know

(not me again with my very specific hcs about deaf pitbulls who fall in love with my faves but LOOK pitbulls are very sweet and caring animals who don't deserve the fame of monsters that they have and if the idea of one being best friend's with magnus and them having a loving and caring relationship doesn't appeal to you then idk what the fuck to tell you)

this of course doesn't help his image cuz this guy is just going there and collecting black cats and snakes and has a huge pitbull around with him at all times but it's not like it can get any worse so magnus doesn't care, and besides, he can't just leave them out to die in the cold and harrassment of middle ages white ppl who think black cats are the worst possible thing but rats carrying deadly diseases are fine (and look, i know rats are also animals that get a lot of shit and persecution, but like, seriously, clean the streets)

and every once in a while there will be a person in need too, like a homeless person in need of a place to stay or some sick person who has been abandoned or something of the sort, so magnus brings them in as well and cares for them as well as he can, but also tries to maintain minimal contact because he's been burned too many times, okay

so like, cue alec! i know in the original BATB belle ended up with the beast to save her father's life but fuck that. i lowkey consider making it "izzy ran away from home so alec comes after her and they both end up staying with magnus" but i think i like it better if it's just alec who decided to leave. like he's done with the abuse both towards him and his sister and he wants to be able to live his life even if he's gonna have to start over in some other village all alone. anywhere but here and all that

and of course alec used to be plenty rich and he has a lot of skills that help him pass by - he's a good archer and hunter, he's a good leader and organizer so he could do wonders for a failing business, he's smart and cunning - but he also has, like, 2 gold coins to his name. maybe some more from stuff he took from home and sold, but still

initially he is living at a tavern and i guess i'm making simon, raphael, and maia tavern owners again! i don't even care anymore, it suits them. rapha is the cook and the three of them run the business and simon also makes musical appearances during dinners every once in a while, and they are living the happy queer polyamorous life of their dreams. we have no choice but to stan

anyway alec is staying with them and he becomes friends with i think maia in particular since, you know, she is the one with the most contact with the customers since rapha is in the kitchen and simon is up the stage most of the time. plus they are both the same brand of bastard and they have an easy understanding between them that just works

and look! simon, raphael, and maia are 3 trans, non-christian/non-white (unnecessary addendum: the concept of whiteness didn't exist until around the 17th century, but whiteness as a concept came basically as a substitute for christianity [link to source], so i'm counting the fact that simon is jewish and raphael and maia are not culturally european as equivalent to non-whiteness in this context) people, so it's not like they would ever kick a gay man running from an abusive home out. but you know what they also are? magnus' friends. and after a while of talking to him maia thinks he is trustworthy enough for them to send magnus' way, because magnus needs as many friends as possible. plus, he wouldn't kick a person in need out, so unlike with them magnus can't really push this newcomer away so he'd have more company. plus, the possibility that he might fall in love with magnus and undo the stupid spell is there, i'm just saying! i'm not saying it WILL happen but why not give it a fucking shot?

raphael in particular is of course super protective of magnus and he swears to god that if this guy gives him half a bad look raphael will end him, which earns him some pats on the shoulder for his troubles and "rapha, we don't want magnus to be hurt either"s. maia says that she's been assessing him for quite a while now and she's pretty positive that he won't be terrible to magnus, but if she's wrong, she'll kill him personally too. and rapha trusts maia. how could he not? she's maia

so, they send alec magnus' way. "i'm sorry alec, but we are struggling to make ends meet *hides gigantic gold stash* and the tavern is packed *raphael upstairs stomps at maximum speed to make it seem like their 13 empty rooms upstairs actually have people* and we really need your room to give to this customer *simon in a wig* BUT we have a friend who we're sure will give you shelter if you ask, it's not very far away, and once we have a free room we will let you know". and alec is just like, okay, because he's been staying there for free or considerably less than the usual fee/in exchange for some stuff he hunts for quite a while now, and they are nice, so it's not like he can complain

and they don't tell him about the spell exactly because it is not their story to tell but they do let him know what to expect re: magnus' vibes and say it's a spell. and alec's like ok i guess. alec's very practical, he doesn't really care, and it's not like it's the guy's fault anyway. which is exactly why maia is sending alec there

so they send magnus a heads up ("magnus this guy is HOMELESS and we are SOOOOO packed can you please give him shelter for a little while thx xoxo"). alec arrives there a while later carrying like 3 prime rabbits he has hunted as a thank you gift because he hates being dependant on people but it's not like jobs abound in the middle ages, and he is actually a little embarrassed to go in and ask this guy he doesn't know for shelter but he IS kinda desperate. for now

anyway he is standing there with his 3 rabbits debating whether or not to knock on the door and magnus just opens it magically like "i know you're there, dear, just come in" so alec does and awkwardly presents him the rabbits and shit and is all "thanks for letting me stay, uh. i can help you with food and taking care of the house and stuff" even though, you know, magnus has magic and doesn't need it

(and magnus appreciates it deeply, because it is tiring to do it all magically on his own but most non-magical people don't even consider that)

and like... it is very awkward at first because magnus does NOT trust at all and he mostly just wants to keep away from anyone who can... look at him. but they ARE living together (oh my god they were roommates!! just kidding they each have their own room but you get it) so it's inevitable. but like magnus' insecurity makes him keep to himself for long times and makes things awkward, kinda like how the initial days with the beast and belle the beast was rude and kinda shitty except magnus is not shitty, just... private

and maybe the subject even comes up like "thanks for the meal alec. i'll go eat it in my room" "i mean, you could eat here if you want" "and ruin your appetite? no thank you" and alec is just like "*shrug* it won't ruin my appetite. unless you are my parents, the concept of failure, or some girl wanting me to marry her, i don't think there's a lot the spell can do to make me scared. besides, you literally have a kitten on top of your head right now and you refuse to remove it and are using a spell to keep her from jostling when you move" "her name is Fluffy, and she is sleeping!" "right, my bad" "wait did you say the concept of failure?" "yea"

it's not that the spell doesn't work on alec; it does, just like it works on his friends. but he is willing to go beyond that initial repulsive reaction that he knows is illogical anyway (and alec is the kind of guy who is just like "if my feelings aren't logical, i don't listen to them" which in this case is useful lmao). and the thing is that once you get to know magnus there is nothing about him that is scary, and the feeling just becomes completely ignorable, because humans are nothing if not adaptable. but most people don't want to go through the trouble to try, and magnus himself doesn't want to let himself be vulnerable enough to give them a chance because there IS a great chance that he will be met with some level of aggression, even if it's an unintentional microaggression

and eventually they grow closer and build trust. i think this happens particularly when camille steps in for one of her regularly schedule shoving-it-in-magnus'-face visits and alec is just like. "hey why don't you just use magic to keep her away?" and magnus realizes that he never even THOUGHT of that and like, jesus, how much has he been unconsciously torturing himself? so he does it, and he ends up telling alec about the story of the spell, which might be the first time he's told someone that didn't know him before the spell was cast

(alec: "so she's basically just killing you slowly?" magnus: "don't be silly, alexander. torturing me first is the most important part". and he sounds self deprecating and almost resigned and god alec feels murderous)

ohh but wait bonus: magnus says that she will only undo the spell if he gets back with her, he doesn't mention that it technically can be undone by romantic love or whatever bullshit's going on because he doesn't believe it can happen anyway, so, who cares

anyway! time goes by. fun fact: alec and magnus get along really fucking well. magnus is so so smart and knowledgeable and he shows alec many of his inventions that never got to see the light of day or that were stolen by someone else who wasn't cursed and took all the credit. he also fascinates alec with his magic, but mostly with his personality. there's something just endlessly endearing about this guy who is so fucking proud of his puns and so so nice and gentle to every creature he encounters, be it a kitten or a pitbull, who's letting alec stay with him for no reason other than that alec needs it

and alec is so goddamn appreciative of it because like he IS and we stan! and he's always trying to give back to magnus which is kind of a rarity, but most of all he's also extremely funny beneath the whole no-bullshit attitude, he's caring and fierce and resourceful and strong (so's magnus) and they click so well. they can also talk about their similar experiences with like, abuse and trauma without making it super heavy and they're just,,, so supportive of each other. so like yeah surprise surprise they fall in love

but they don't really say anything because (on magnus' part) that's just fucking ridiculous, he's a monster; and (on alec's part) he will put magnus is a way too uncomfortable position if magnus doesn't like him that way and they will just... be living together. and magnus will feel like he has to compensate to alec somehow and alec doesn't want that. it's just complicated when one of them is dependant on the other, and besides, alec has had very little to offer magnus so far

(no, he has no idea how much his company means to magnus and has brighted his depressed ass life. he is stupid)

sometimes magnus' friends visit and they're always just so happy for him, to see how he's hanging out more and let someone into his life after so long. it earns him a lot of forehead kisses and "i'm so happy to see you like this". and over time he starts to invite them over more as well as just open up back to the people in his life :')

angsty but also kind of fluffy sidenote: i picture that every time they kiss his forehead or cheek or whatever they linger for a little while and then open their eyes slowly and sigh like "i had been hoping that it would work this time. magnus, you know i love you, right?" and magnus is all like "i know just from you saying that, darling. it's just not how the spell works" and aaa

and like to be extra clear im not saying that alec fixes him or romantic love heals him or whatever, just that having let someone in, someone who didn't know him before the spell, and have them completely accept him and realize how much he had been missing out re: touch and human contact helps him realize how much he misses his friends and how pushing them away is stupid when they've never been anything if not supportive of him. they don't care that he's cursed. and obviously magnus was already on the way to that if he even managed to let alec in anyway

anyway! dramatic healing scene. LOOK. usually i'd be all for "they don't change back actually because people don't have to look beautiful to be lovable". like the original BATB disappointed me sooo badly because i had just been hoping that he'd stay the same way and still be loved. but in this case it's not that magnus doesn't look beautiful! it's that the spell has made him be hated by people for no reason other than existing. and breaking the spell is not changing magnus himself, it's changing that hatred. so, yeah. i'm not saying it's a deep metaphor or anything, just, you know daudhasdja it's different from the usual monster thing

and i'm torn here because on the one hand i LOVE the drama of the original BATB where everyone decides to gather to kill the beast and belle saves him and shit, but idk if it fits with the vibe ive been building here. no actually @ me shut the fuck up. you know how i mentioned that they kick camille out with magic finally? i actually had no intentions of following through with this in any way but like of COURSE she would be absolutely pissed out of her mind and want to get back in some way, we already know she's vindictive. so i'm gonna use that. this is what neil gailman meant when he said that writing is just making a rough draft and then writing it again but like it's on purpose this time

anyway! so after they yeet her camille is obviously furious and fuming and it might have finally dawned on her that magnus will NOT fucking cave and she is losing power over him, not gaining it. so she decides to play a last card and get him to almost die so he kind of HAS to take her bid, you know? so she makes up some shit about how magnus has kidnapped the lightwood heir and she's only now hearing about it, and no one else is safe and yada yada. and she has "proof" because alec IS indeed there and again the spell just helps everyone easily agree with her that magnus is That Kind Of Guy or whatever, and middle ages ppl weren't exactly waiting for a good enough reason to grab their pitchforks. and they don't even KNOW about the spell, really. all they know is that he's very powerful, secluded, and they all fear and almost hate him just from one look

so camille makes up some bullshit story about how he made a deal with the devil to become extra powerful, and that the source of his powers is the rose, so they have to get rid of the rose to kill him. (sidenote: i never understood why the hell the rose was never used as a weakness against the beast. like was he keeping it super guarded and safe just for the fucking shits?) so they devise an attack so someone can sneak up and get the rose, and camille makes up some bullshit story about how they have to destroy the rose a specific way so it takes longer and she has time to manipulate magnus before he dies. man, it's easy to be a villain when your target is secluded

anyway! big attack at magnus' house. magnus' friends don't hear about it until it's too late because camille knows exactly who they are and warned them that they were on "the witch's" side. alec is maybe away hunting when it happens? camille obviously has magic in this AU so she can check for that information. maybe she even says that she will be the one responsible for finding the lightwood heir so there is minimal risk of him revealing that she lied lmao

oh no, violence! they battle and yada yada. catarina is probably the first one to realize what is happening because i figure she, madzie, and dot are the ones who live closest to magnus'. they send fire messages and get ragnor, simon, maia, raphael, and meliorn to help. oh yeah, and alec i genuinely forgot trust me to forget about romance in a romance-focused au. but alec is the only one of them without any magical resources and he's far away and on foot, so he's gonna be the last to get there, which camille had been counting on

but alec or no alec, they can keep the attackers at bay because they're all powerful and smart and shit and a lot of them have magic as opposed to the mundanes who don't, but of course that's mostly because they are holding off on attacking and the invasion is mostly a distraction because their PLAN is to use the rose. and camille tells them all to leave once the petal puckering starts so she can "protect them from any lashouts" (have her big villain speech). and it's not like any of magnus' friends is gonna leave to go after them when magnus is dying, bUT they also won't attack camille because she's his only hope. and they won't be able to get to stop the rose plucking in time because that's in another room and while she made it slower than something that the person can use to kill him in a second it's also not slow enough for them to get there on time (maybe there's a spell against magic use near where magnus keeps the rose? just for extra safety, so the ones with magic can't portal there or whatever)

anyway. big villain speech. magnus screams in pain every time a new petal is plucked. his friends are either running to the rose thing desperately or trying to get camille to stop this madness, she's going to kill him for fuck's sake. i don't know which chooses to do what so you can figure that out i guess. and for that extra drama, right when the last petal was going to be plucked, wee woo alec lightwood arrives! and he went straight for the rose because magnus had told him about it and he figured that there was a good chance the attackers might go for it. so he shoots the person's leg or something and gets them away from the rose and yay, day saved! mostly. because now there is only one petal left to fall before magnus dies, so at the very least, his lifespan has been shortened considerably. also, he is still in pain

i'm torn about what happens to camille then. on the one hand, i love killing camille! bonding activities for the whole family. on the other, she kinda is the only one who can save him now. they all know magnus won't want to get back with her, but hey, it's not like camille wants a relationship! she wants magnus to be her asset. a relationship was just the best way to get him to do that she had initially. but magnus doesn't want to cave and be dependant of her, so, you know. but maybe they can try to convince her to stop this fucking madness, god knows how

so okay yeah no camille-killing yet because they don't want to jeopardize magnus' safety, so she just leaves convinced that either way, she wins, and this might be the best possible scenario actually because magnus will have lots of times to think it over and be real desperate and come to her and strike a deal. so, yay her! she just needs to lie to the mundanes that the mission was successful or whatever, and it's not like that's gonna be hard because magnus won't want to be seen there again, so

we are all running to check up on magnus now. he's kinda like, on the ground coughing blood, but he'll live for as long as the last rose doesn't fall. still, they all settle on trying to help him, getting him in bed, tending to his wounds, etc. and thinking about what the fuck they are all going to do now. so you have raphael and maia making magnus soup, simon running his mouth as he throws around ideas on how they can fix this, ragnor, cat, dot, and madzie (who is here now that the danger is over ofc) checking and rechecking magnus' vitals for the billionth time and trying to figure out how much time they have, meliorn using their fae powers to stop his pain. and madzie is all snuggled in bed with magnus holding his hand and asking if he wants her to tell him a bedtime story, and magnus just... feels cared for and loved

alec meanwhile i think would tell what ACTUALLY happened to the person who was doing the rose thing - i actually have thought about it and think it might make sense for it to be luke. just because i love him and it kinda fits the whole "initially sided with shadowhunters, lately became a downworlder" thing. and like luke genuinely believed he was saving a person/people so alec brings him in too and magnus is all "catarina, dear, can you help heal his leg? i would, but i don't think i have enough magic right now" because he is the sweetest man immediately wanting to help the guy who almost killed him. and luke is in awe

(and alec brings him on purpose, too, because he knows that anyone who actually talks to magnus for a little while will see what an amazing person he is. and he hopes that luke, as a mundane, can tell the others that and turn them against camille)

and after that, of course, alec sits down by magnus' side and Does Not Leave. he's just there holding his hand and talking to him and magnus' friends, who are all also kind of. sitting there, trying to snuggle up in a gigantic pile of like 10 ppl to cuddle close to magnus and make sure he feels loved and cared for and that they know he is real. madzie gets special privileges in that sense because she's smaller and also a kid, so she gets to be kinda snuggled up with him. so alec has to be content with holding magnus' hand lmao (which he is, he's just happy that he's alive and okay. and he has a whole plan to get camille to undo the spell, mostly involving getting the mundanes against her and telling her that she is only safe for as long as magnus lives, because once he dies, she will have a bunch of ppl who will hunt her down to the faces of the earth to make her pay for what she did to him. the only reason they didn't do that yet is because she can still save magnus' live, so is she really going to let him die knowing that she will be next?)

so alec takes his hand and tells magnus that they will fix this, he promises, and give a little kiss on magnus' hand. just a little peck, no deep intentions, but magnus gasps a little because he feels something, and his eyes water a little bit because he's so touch starved and tired and hurt and alec kissed his hand and he can feel this kind of ache inside him, somehow a good ache, but he just can't explain it. and so alec notices his watery eyes and he very tenderly wipes his tears away and tells him that they're all on his side, will always be, and kisses him on the forehead. and this kiss? this kiss is full of adoration and love and purpose, and magnus gasps and the wounds that hadn't been healed suddenly mend together, and the petals that had fallen go back to the rose before it disappears in a beautiful flash of light, and suddenly magnus' magic is back full force and he just looks at himself for a second, and everyone erupts into joy because holy shit, the spell is broken

and alec is so confused because again! he didn't kNOW about the whole true love's kiss thing or he would have asked magnus to let him kiss him as soon as he learnt about his feelings, because even if magnus didn't feel the same way, alec could undo the spell. and he's like "why the hell didn't you tell me?? we could have fixed this months ago" and magnus is like "i didn't think it would make a difference. wait, you're in love with me? have been for months?" and alec is like "first of all, yes. second of all, i have nothing else to say, i just said 'first of all' because i was so indignant"

and magnus laughs and jumps on him and kisses him on the mouth this time and they are both smiling and laughing into it and so so happy. and raphael is kind of just peppering kisses on maia's face too, like, "you were right, he undid the spell, thank you" and maia was never sure that this would happen but she will take the credit actually please and thank you

and they all live happily ever after and kill camille together the end i guess. god this post was so long i'm so sorry

I'm assuming in other fandoms, not The 100? Because in The 100 she's pretty one of a kind, though of course Hope has a number of her personality traits as well, due to being partially raised by her.

Looking to other fandoms, these characters are best defined as "my favourites". I have a type :D This type can be best defined as "misunderstood badasses who have a light side and a dark side, who love intensely with their whole heart, and too often people take advantage of that for their own ends".

So, in roughly chronological order (from most recent to most distant), my favourite characters of my fandoms of the past ten make that twenty years who also fit this category:

Magnus Bane, Shadowhunters

An immortal bisexual warlock with a painful past, he believes strongly in equality and justice. He's not afraid of speaking truth to power and fighting for what's right. I actually have a fic that I've been dabbling with that is a Shadowhunters/The 100 crossover, set in the bunker with Shadowhunters as history, but since Magnus is immortal he's still alive, even if most of the Shadow World died in the first Praimfaya. At the time of the Final Conclave at the end of season 4, Magnus is a Yujleda healer, he's in the throne room when Octavia wins (there is actually a guy there that, if you squint, looks like him), and her speech of unity reminds him of his deceased Shadowhunter husband Alec, who had the same mission decades ago, and he resolves to help the Skaikru girl make her vision come true.

Regina Mills/Evil Queen, Once Upon A Time

Another queen with a painful past. I've compared Octavia and Regina before, and that comparison still stands. In short, they both start their stories naïve, trusting and believing in love, and both of their starts of darkness resulted from death of loved ones and familial abandonment, though Regina did legit go full on evil for awhile, but she did come back from it. And like Octavia, she also triumphs in the end and comes out of it as the true hero.

Eliot Spencer, Leverage

He’s a gruff badass with a soft spot for kids and is fiercely protective of his squad. He also has a mysterious dark past that he always feels he’s still atoning for, and the episodes where he works to address connections to said past are often the standouts.

Juliet Burke and James “Sawyer” Ford, LOST

These two... they just melt my heart. I love them so much. I’m so glad that they found each other, but even after living happily together for years, their insecurities and fears still made them panic. Juliet is a badass doctor who would do anything to keep her sister safe, and Sawyer is a conman whose heart grows as he finds love to fill it with. My heart.

Faith Lehane, Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel

The original badass bitch (okay, well, maybe Xena comes before her, but I was never as heavily into Xena as I was BtVS). There are some Faith scenes that I rewatch now that just scream “Octavia!” to me (especially the scene where she’s begging Angel to kill her). It was with Faith that I first saw how crucial love and compassion were to helping people heal from darkness, and it was the first time I saw people deny it to those who needed it - until Angel was Faith’s Diyoza and helped her in a way others couldn’t.

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!! i love royalty au when it’s set in a diff universe and i dont always go for modern royalty, but a few of them i’ve read are well done so it’s really dependent on the way it’s written! but i’ve got a few must haves for a royalty au that get me like 😍

MAGICAL PRINCE MAGNUS AHHHHHHHH okay so obviously prince magnus>>>> because the aesthetic of prince magnus in fancy clothes, with an intricate crown and beautiful jewellery!!! also it means we can get courtship! and political intrigue! he still has magic because i say so!! also because magnus is so perfect he’d be the type of prince with a great relationship with his people so we’d get magnus being the sweetheart he is! also prince magnus overthrowing his father, the tyrannical king asmodeus????? UGH PERFECTION!!!!!! also i’d like to think that after asmodeus is overthrown, magnus still is not yet of age to be crowned king so ragnor (his older cousin, and no dont ask how they’re related) is the regent but really magnus has a lot of input in the ruling and ragnor is there as more of a formality and an advisor to magnus? cat, raphael, and dot are also members of the royal court and are magnus’ closest advisors and they have their own little family you know? also magnus’ mom died of a sickness when magnus was young and it was tragic and he was really broken by it because he loved his mother so much. so asmodeus tries to raise magnus to be the perfect weapon but thanks to his heart of gold and his found family, he doesn’t become the monster his father says he is. he wants to lead his kingdom to greatness, and do his best to help his people recover from asmodeus’ rule and move forward.

WARRIOR PRINCE ALEC HELL YEAH so with alec i like the idea of him being the crown prince of a neighbouring kingdom and he and magnus meet and it’s like Instant Sparks and they fall in love at first sight, as they tend to do, and it’s amazing. alec would be the prince who has a reputation of being stoic and cold and closed off but he’s just under the weight of all the expectations you know? plus i feel like his kingdom would be a kingdom of warriors and so he’s also excellent in combat and gets a reputation as an amazing archer and strategist. and it’s hard to please the lightwood parents who are forever comparing alec to jace and belittling him, and it’s tough but he does it for izzy and max, so they don’t take the pain. (alec lightwood is the best big brother ever). and he’s got all these ideas to open up idris and form proper alliances with the neighbouring kingdoms, to unify and bring peace to his people.

FANCY ROYAL BALL FOR LIKE SOMEONE’S ENGAGEMENT IDK IT’S NOT RELEVANT BUT THAT IS WHERE MALEC MEET it’s the 18th birthday of idk clary who’s a princess of some other kingdom idk it’s not relevant the exact occasion and the only thing that matter is this is where all the romance get set up! so it’s a big diplomatic thing and the leader and/or their heirs are expected to attend and magnus goes to represent edom with the immortal squad, and alec is there with izzy (and jace but they just ignore him after he runs after some poor girl to dance wth her). alec exchanges pleasantries with a few of the other guests but he’s not really there for gossip, trying to discuss alliances and trade agreements. magnus is asked to dance by many suitors, but he’s not looking to start a relationship nor to fuel the rumour mill so he politely declines and carries on mingling and soon enough the two princes meet and it’s like magic. magnus makes a terribly cheesy pun in response to a stranger at the bar’s sarcastic retort at some pompous duke and oh no he’s hot!!!! they both smile and introduce themselves with a distinct lack of effortless flair for magnus, or the calm composure typical of alec. they get to talking and it’s easy to see that neither of them have experienced this kind or ease and comforting familiarity when talking to someone outside of their inner circles.

whilst magnus and alec are falling in love over the course of a conversation, there is some hilarious shenanigans as maia, raphael, meliorn, and simon find themselves tangled in a love quadrangle as they all feel so drawn to one another, taking turns to dance with one another before retreating to their friend groups to be like “they are all so beautiful and sweet and kind please help!!!!” and so ensues one of the most elaborate slow burn romances the royal courts have seen in ages (the betting pool is also exceptionally large and is won by meliorn who with raphael, started more than half the rumours in order to stir the pot and collect the winnings and spoil their partners).

so anyway back to malec, they talk and have a few drinks and all is well and good and still pretty calm until alec picks up the way magnus is swaying to the music and tapping his feet to the beat, so alec asks magnus to dance and leads him to the dancefloor where they dance the night away, alec more than happy to twirl magnus around the dancefloor and make him giggle and blush, showing him off to everyone else. realising that they’ve attracted quite a fair bit of attention, they decide to steal away to an empty garden and continue dancing in the moonlight, the night is pure and utter perfection, and they part somewhat reluctantly, wanting to spend more time with one another, but also eager for the next day where they have agree to spend the day together. alec steels himself to press a brief, sweet, chaste kiss to magnus’ cheek before leaving to escort a tired and tipsy isabelle back to their guest chambers. magnus is left blushing, hand pressed to his cheek where alec’s warm lips pressed a gentle kiss that gave him butterflies.

COURTSHIP!!!! i desperately need courtship rituals!! like alec sending magnus elaborate flower arrangements with sweet, affectionate messages in flower language, magnus sending alec charmed tokens like a simple necklace or leather bracelet that has protective and healing spells woven into it!! them sending love letter to one another! they spend a lot of time together at social events and at “diplomacy meetings” where yes, they do discuss trade and alliances and what not but also it’s an excuse for them to spend at least a week with one another in either kingdom and they go on picnic dates on palace grounds, sneak out of their rooms at night to stargaze, wander through towns and eat street food (and alec always buys magnus little gifts and tokens that remind him of his love) and they train together, teaching each other the fighting styles of their respective kingdoms, and yes, there is a gratuitous alec teaching magnus archery scene because im fucking weak!!! and alec likes to hang out in the royal apothecary in edom and watch magnus make a whole bunch of cool potions, invent spells, and write magical theory. magnus in turn, is very fond of going to the training sessions of idris’ elite warriors–the shadowhunters, to watch alec obliterate a whole bunch of soldiers at various combat skills.

BATTLE COUPLE!!!!!! so they’re together for months and all is good but then valentine happens and has been getting his forces gathered during this whole thing and even before it (im just stupid and forgot to mention it sdkfvbabhvjabv) and anyway he attacks!! and the crown princes of idris and edom unite, together with the other young royals from the neighbouring kingdoms and their armies to defeat valentine. and the two of them are damn near impossible to beat, alec with his honed-from-birth warrior skills, and magnus with his proficiency in both magical and non-magical combat. and it goes well at first but then the tides turn and they have to split up and they part and it’s this moment of “i don’t know if we’ll survive this” and they almost go tosay i love you but then alec is like “i’ll tell you when we survive this, so please come back to me, and i’ll come back to you” and they’re both crying a little but they share one last kiss before separating.

the battle ends and they’re desperate to find each other, tearing through the battlefield to find their love. and they finally see each other and run into each other’s arms, both looking a little worse for wear, and they pull away from the embrace long enough for alec to blurt out “i love you” with so much conviction and surety that magnus subconsciously shakes his head, disbelieving that someone could love him of all people, before confessing his own love for alec. they kiss and it feels like relief and home and hope.

IDK HOW TO DESCRIBE BUT THE THING WHERE THEY’RE A DISGUSTINGLY CUTE COUPLE AND THEY’RE BASICALLY ENGAGED BUT NOTHING OFFICIAL

so they recover from the battle and they mourn their fallen, celebrate their victories, and bring justice to the invaders. this young generation of leaders more or less formally ascends to power and usher in a new era of peace, collaboration, and unity (the fact that there are so many inter-kingdom royal romances certainly doesn’t hurt the alliance)

in this time of peace, cat and dot get married and adopt madzie, the polycule are living their best lives, and izzy gets together with clary.

magnus and alec continue their courtship for a couple more years until they both turn of age to be crowned kings. alec plans an elaborate proposal that sweeps magnus off his feet and just a month after their respective coronations, they marry and their kingdoms are merged as one. and they all lived happily ever after

Shakthi ILY!!!!! Thank you so so much!!! Heist AU is BRILLIANT and I wanna hear your take!!!!!!! here are some thoughts, say in sh universe canon divergence, immortal squad... idk when this would take place so maybe that is the AU:

It all starts because Catarina is doing some research and found a reference to an old book she must get her hands on for what she is working on. The next step is to call up Ragnor to see if he knows where there might be a copy. He tells her, after some research, that there are only two copies left, one in Idris and one at the New York Institute. One of those is clearly easier to get into than the other.

Well. It's not like she can rock up to the Institute and asked for them to give her the book. So Catarina adds Magnus to the call because Magnus helps with the Institute wards. Would he be able to get through them? Of course he could!

Round out the heist group by bringing Raphael with them. It will be helpful to have someone who is very strong in case something in the Institute dampens their magic. Who knows what they might find?

Heist steps: Ragnor causes some false demon activity spikes, so there will be fewer shadowhunters in the Institute. Catarina portals them all near the Institute gardens, where there is more natural cover. Magnus opens a little hole in the wards they can all step through. The door to get inside the Institute resists unlocking charms, but Raphael is able to break the hinges.

Now they're in! Ragnor stays in the garden to guard the escape route. Catarina keeps the other three under a charm that deflects people's sight while Magnus leads them to where the library is and gets them through the extra layer of wards around it. Raphael is able to use vamp speed to search for the book in question when they decide it is too risky to try and summon it.

(They grab some other books and artifacts before they leave too, anything that looks familiar or anything that could be used against the downworld).

It goes surprisingly well though Ragnor does have to cause a distraction by running off and leading some shadowhunters away so the others can portal. They all meet back at the loft and spend the rest of the evening going over their hard-won items!

To go more canon divergence, maybe Alec is instructed to investigate this Incident, and we have an alternate Malec first meeting! Alec can be the inside man if they try and pull another such heist, such as a bigger one to get into Alicante...

what are your top 6 SH scenes?

my top 6:

2x18 pre 1st time (literally the best 1st time scene on tv- not too sexy, not too soft, just the right amount of comfortable intimacy and passion. their giggles and smiles were so beautiful for this meaningful moment- alec’s 1s time ever and magnus’ 1st time ever with a shadowhunter)

2x10 reunion (the most beautiful depiction of an “i love you” moment. alec’s sudden realization how he felt. their relief in expressing it aloud. so much raw emotion in this scene. and the pure warmth radiating from their embrace shone brighter than sun hitting simon’s face in the next scene)

3x21 reunion (their happiness at being able to hold each other again and not wanting to let go. alec reassuring magnus that not even hell itself could separate them ever again. and alec considering becoming immortal just to get to him. the power that that has, the intelligence that that has...)

3x12 training (truly showed how they can just relax with each other. the “serious shadowhunter leader” and the “helpful, reliable warlock” can let go of their perpetual duties for a moment and just be playful boyfriends. and them christening the institute finally lol. shows the evolution from s1)

1x12 loft talk (the palpable tension here is unparalleled. it also showed how openly and respectfully they communicated from the start- despite both being frustrated, they let the other say their piece. and this talk made it obvious that they were both aware their attraction could lead to more)

3x16 talk (”if jace was gold, alec was silver” speech, whomst? unlike that infamous book quote where magnus devalues his own worth and only puts stock in him being alec’s 1st, this talk let alec verbalize that he loves magnus as a person, regardless of anything else. and just like magnus had made clear he’s there for alec in his s1/ 2a/ 3a struggles, it was nice to see alec do the same thing for magnus here again, as he had in 2x15. their dynamic is just so mutually supportive and so unselfishly generous)

and my top 6 NON malec:

(since the best were all them lol- matt/ harry’s acting chemistry is just too good!)

2x07 alec/ izzy talk (perfectly displays their healthy sibling dynamic- not too distant or too close that it oversteps personal boundaries, aka jalec’s perpetual cycle. she helped him clarify his own wants and needs, and gave just the right amount of support and teasing to put him at ease)

1x01 pandemonium (the way it seamlessly wove together all the mains- except luke- and gave us a snapshot of each one’s distinct vibes as who they were as a person at that point in time- simply iconic. and the club! they could do random ones in 2b/ 3a/ 3b but not bring this one back?)

2x16 valentine/ jonathan (compelling parent issues, but make it fun! unlike 3b!jonathan’s issues with lilith or magnus’ issues with asmodeus- both of which had such blatant creepy incestuous undertones from the parents that it totally ruined those potentially interesting dynamics for me)

2x10 loft mission squad (of course, it’s best when malec was with the squad together, but seeing as the writers let alec have tons of missions without magnus there- with the other 3 shadowhunters in every season, and with simon/ luke in s1 and s3- it was nice to have the reverse of that, just this once. i wish they had let magnus work with main squad more...)

3x16 summon lilith squad (the parts when clace, sizzy, and jonathan were all rolling on the ground and cain shoots lilith a look like: ok then- and when clary screamed/ grabbed her neck after simon bit jonathan- were funny. quick side note, but the fact that the showrunners/ writers did not 1 but 2 rune-drama™ dynamics on the show- but framed one as bad and must be broken immediately, versus framing the other as “sweet” and must be kept forever no matter the cost, was so... hilariously hypocritical)

2x01 aldertree (after our mains had spent all of s1 running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads chopped off, he swoops in like an evil mary poppins. anyway, he was fun while he lasted- minus the izzy arc ofc)

A silly time travel romance novel set in Scotland that they had read together a few years before had recently been made into a tv show, and Catarina was gleefully planning to force Ragnor to watch it with her and laugh at his endless complaints over the historical inaccuracies. 11) The pain was finally gone, but Alec's brain still felt fuzzy. He blinked his eyes open, trying to focus on the figure next to his bed. All his brain could register was a halo of light and an impression of gold. (We Made It Here Through the Storm [Malec fic collection])

Ragnor was strong, but Magnus was nearly as tall as he was, and even though Magnus was thin, Ragnor and Catarina had had to carry him a long way after he had finally passed out, which had made him feel especially heavy. 19) After an incident in Turkey that ends in the two of them caught in the middle of a battle between some local vampire clans and werewolf packs, Ragnor Fell declares that he never wants to see Magnus Bane’s obnoxious face or his ridiculously over-styled hair again. He leaves Turkey in a huff, with a vow to never return. Though if he actually refused to return to all of the countries Magnus had gotten them in trouble in, he would run out of places in the world to visit. (When I Wanted Sunshine, I Got Rain)

20) Tessa had been living with Magnus in Paris for a few months now. When Will had died, she hadn’t known where else to go. Without Will by her side, she felt more like a different creature than she had ever had among the Shadowhunters she had lived with nearly her entire life, and she couldn’t stay and watch her children outlive her, but Magnus had always been kind to her. Alec Defense Squad 2018

To the people in the fandom spreading hate about malec and Alec’s focus on Jace:

You are entitled to your own opinion, and I get where you’re coming from because I was recently there in my previous posts, but I’ve had some time to think it over, and have come to this realization:

Alec is being totally in character right now.

Why?

Because that’s what he does--he burns the ground he stands on to make something right. Just like Magnus observed in season 2.

Whenever Alec wants to resolve something, he has an abnormal focus on it until it’s done. He’s borderline-obsessive about it. When he wants to accomplish something, he only thinks about that--it’s his primary focus. He doesn’t see outside his focus, and sometimes, this has consequences.

Think about it: in season 1, he did this when he was determined to preserve his family’s name. Then, he was equally as focused when he realized that Magnus was who he wanted and kissed him, consequences be damned. In season 2, he was determined to find Jace, and then he was determined to help Clary when he felt guilty about her mom’s death. Next, he was focused solely on having sex with Magnus. Then, it was determining that Magnus was alive--he only cared about that result after the battle at the Institute. Next, it was refusing to give up when Magnus wouldn’t talk about his problems in 2x15. Then, in season 3, it was with the immortality discussion and how he wanted to figure it out--he wanted to understand it, but he was so, so conflicted about it.

And right now? He’s focused on saving his parabatai from his hell he’s been put through.

Usually, this focus is an admirable thing: he’s determined, goddamnit, and shit gets done. On occasion, however, it prevents him from seeing other things happening around him. In this case, he probably doesn’t realize one undeniable fact: Magnus, like Jace and the others he cares about, is also vulnerable and is hurting due to guilt.

It’s who Alec is. It’s both a flaw and an asset.

Soon, he’ll think outside of his focus on Jace. He’s just not there. Yet. The problem isn’t resolved yet.

But, he will be. And I have a feeling it will be euphoric and devastating.

Meh, it could be worse:

Magnus is in Seattle and Simon suspects why but he won’t ask. It’s been three hundred years since New York, long enough for Simon to settle into his immortality and long enough that he and the warlock have come to rely on one another in time of trouble and times are troubling these days for Magnus Bane. He shows up on the steps of the St. Lewis Hotel – the biggest vampire den in International District, ostensibly Simon’s den, ostensibly his home, ostensibly a majority of his clan – and he looks like hell.

“Magnus?” Simon gestures for the other vampires manning the door to leave him. “You look like crap. What happened?”.

“Nothing good,” Magnus says, looking like he needs a five-shot espresso and a hug.

Simon doesn’t have espresso, but he can do hugs. So he carefully loops his arms around the warlock, who is actually quite a bit taller than him, and hugs him before his tired brain can register that’s what Simon is doing. He’s a little surprised when Magnus doesn’t get annoyed or pretend to get annoyed like he’d assumed he would, but rather sighs and leans into the pressure, letting Simon press the breath out of him just a little, in that way Simon know he kind of enjoys.

“I thought you were still mad at me?” Simon murmurs.

“I am, I’m just too tired for that,” Magnus says.

They separate and Simon studies the warlock. He’s not wearing any makeup, his hair’s a damp wreck shaved into mostly a mohawk at this point, his eyes bloodshot, and he has this faint scent of copper and iron filings about him. All signs of magic exhaustion, that he’s been pour magic into something or someone and Simon’s heard the rumors, but doesn’t yet want to ruin things so…

“I have open suites. Or you can crash in the guest room in my loft but…” He kind of trails off.

“But Camille is here, I know.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I called her and she told me to come here to hide out until this thing blows over. She also offered up the guest room in the loft and the fact she hasn’t already told you, suggests that she’d like to make this awkward. Or she wanted to see what you’d do on your own, so thank you I suppose for being independently generous with my plight.

“Oh,” Simon says. Then, “Dammit, Camille.”

“I’m too tired to be irritated about that either,” Magnus says. “I’ll sleep on the floor if you don’t offer me something very immediately, Mr. Lewis.”

Magnus is passed out in their guest room by the time Camille gets back from her meeting at the Seattle Institute. They stand quietly in the doorway while he sleeps, all the lights in the loft turned off but in no way impeding their view of the warlock who’s still mostly dressed, sprawled in a tangle of pillows and comforter. He hadn’t bothered to get under the sheets. Rather just passing out immediately on contact with the mattress.

“What happened?” Simon asks softly.

“He killed a squad of shadowhunters. He’s been portaling werewolves and warlocks out of Bangladesh. The Clave’s gone rogue down there, but the investigation is still ongoing. He’ll need to hide out until he’s cleared.”

There’s a pause.

“You should tell him,” Camille says eventually. “If he’s going to be staying with us, you should tell him.”

“What? That I’m lame and I’ve had a weird crush on him for the last century? No. Christ. It took him a century just to stop being mad about you and me. I think he still hasn’t gotten over Alec. Just… no.” Simon huffs quietly. “No.”

Camille sighs.

“Darling, even immortals don’t have all the time in the world.” And after a silence has passed, where Simon does not answer, Camille says, “It’s easy to love him, isn’t it? He makes it so easy to want him. Be careful with that Simon; the wanting can get very messy.” She wanders away from the door. “I speak from experience.”

“Don’t you still love him?”

“Of course.” She shrugs. “But he wouldn’t call it love.”

Simon lets her go, staying in the door to watch the slow rise and fall of Magnus’ chest as he sleeps. Magnus is probably a thousand years old by now and there aren’t many warlocks that old that he knows of. At least not in this realm. Seems so strange to have something so important, so constant to the world, just kind of passed out in his guest room like a drunk friend after a rogue Friday. Simon is three-hundred years old and looking at Magnus Bane, he feels like he’s eighteen again. Mortal again. He wonders how much of how he feels for Magnus has nothing to do with him and everything to do with him just… being familiar.

“Simon?”

He snaps out of it. “Oh. Sorry, Magnus. Did I wake you up?”

Magnus blinks. Simon can see it because he’s dropped his glamore and his cat-eyes glow faintly gold in the darkness.

“Are you watching me sleep?”

Simon doesn’t have a heartbeat any more but if he did, it would be hammering. “I was trying to decide if I should wake you up,” Simon lies immediately, when he was definitely watching Magnus sleep like a serial killer. “Camille is in. Sorry.”

Magnus says nothing for a while, then, “Thank you, Simon. I mean it.”

“Yeah. Of course. Just… get some sleep.”

“You don’t –” Magnus starts to say, then stops. There is a universe of possibility in the pause. “Good-night, Simon.”

“Night, Magnus.”

ugh i know this ask is old but i'm not sure what you mean by "magnus bane can cook anon", like, if you sent me another ask about this, i didn't get it rip. unless it's something i have already answered and i don't remember, in that case i'm sorry

anyway, YOU ARE RIGHT! magnus being unable to cook is preposterous tbh, i will not listen to these lies. HE! IS! INDONESIAN! food is important! and as an immigrant in particular he knows that better than anyone because food is a way to keep connected to his roots, to his love, to his culture. i will not accept any "magnus can't cook" slander, he CAN! plus like you see the way he made alec's stew amazing?? yeah yeah he used magic but i doubt there is a "make this delicious" spell, he needed to have known WHAT he would have done to the stew, add this and this and that to alter the taste, so like? he knows how to handle himself in the kitchen okay and he knows what tastes good and what doesn't, he can cook

and he knows exactly how important food is as a love language and YES him and raphael!!!! i don't have to argue that raphael can cook of course, we all know he does, and again! immigrant! LATINO!!!!! food is so fucking important for latines in general, even non-immigrants, and i imagine that it is even more so for immigrants. it's part of your culture, part of who you are. and like! raphael has been unable to eat for so long! i bet he misses it so much and i think when he wants to thank magnus for something, food is the way to go

especially in the early years. he didn't have much he could have done for magnus when he was just a recently Turned vampire kid with nowhere to go and nothing to his name, but he COULD cook for him. and i bet he was ecstactic to. i hc that magnus grows his own ingredients at home because he simply doesn't trust gringo markets to have good food and while he can and will travel to jakarta every now and then to enjoy a good food market - again, it's an intrinsic part of his culture! of course he wants to go to those when he can, it's not just the food, it's the sharing and the experience - he also wants to grow his own food. plus i think he is attached to plants. you've seen the way he talks to snakes, you mean to tell me he doesn't have a bunch of plants he grows (both for potions and foods) and talks with and grooms and is all loving towards? nonsense. absurd. i won't listen to these lies

and YES i am projecting unto him but i don't care! magnus loves his little plant friends (they have been particularly therapeutic for him in the early years after camille i feel, when he was so lonely. of course he has his cats but cats aren't really fans of hanging out all the time and plants are always there and just looking at a plant you helped grow makes you feel so much better) and prunes them with so much love and care, and because of magic he can control the weather conditions so it's always ideal for them, and make sure they are well taken care of. but he likes to do it himself without the need of magic when he can, because it's all about bonding with the plants. and when he gets to literally take the fruits of his labor, well. it makes the food and potions even more special :)

actually i bet that it actually does make a difference for potions, like... when you know the ingredients and they have been grown with love and care and a connection to the warlock they are more powerful. because plants are living, breathing things that build connections, and magic connects all things, and also because i said so!

BACK TO COOKING

i think part of the reason we've never seen him cook tbh is just because it's so... intimate. like it requires opening up about his culture and his past and a part of who he is and how he feels is in a dish (as with every dish) so it's just... way more intimate and intense than just taking someone out to dinner or something. and most of his interactions in the show were with shadowhunters, whom he either doesn't trust for obvious reasons, or does trust (alec and izzy basically, maybe clary) but knows they don't really fully understand what it means to him so there's just too big a chance to feel like he wore his heart on his sleeve for nothing (i'm talking mainly about alec here cuz i don't think he'd cook for izzy or clary lol but i do think they're on his trusted or somewhat trusted list)

and with raphael it's just painful because raphael can't eat and that's a big thing that probably upsets him on the regular, like, it's another thing that makes him feel a- human; and b- connected to his culture. and when i say human i don't mean it as just "humans eat food", i mean it as in eating for humans is about socialization and self-expression and having that taken away from him makes him feel soulless

but that just makes raphael want to cook MORE! i mean we've seen him cooking for rosa('s nursing home) so that's pretty much canon anyway. and i have no doubts in my mind that raphael used to cook for magnus all the time. initially recipes he already knew from his mom and his abuela, because again, it's just... sharing who he is and almost like welcoming magnus as a part of his family, and magnus understands that 100% and probably cries the first time rapha makes him pozole or something (he knows it's rapha's comfort food and he's just had a hard day and he's tired and maybe a bit worn by depression and raphael makes it for him and he's just... so touched and overwhelmed by the immenseness of the gesture). and then magnus starts to tentatively teach him the recipes he remembers for his own mom and again that's just.... ugh the magnitude of that is incalculable. and rapha knows it too

and he's highkey nervous because he knows magnus hasn't really tasted this in so long and he doesn't want to butcher it, you know? and he can't try the food to see if it's good, he can basically only go by smell (which i figure he has perfected over the years but he's known magnus since the early years so that was probably harder by then) but magnus is just happy to have someone to pass this down to, you know? like he's cooked meals for ragnor, dot, cat, elias, etc., before (immortal squad dinner meetups where everyone brings their favorite foods from their childhoods and ragnor makes tea because no one is putting up with that shit <3) but passing the recipes on to someone else is a whole different deal, it speaks of their father-son bond and it's basically welcoming raphael into the family back, you know? and rapha knows

and from then on rapha starts cooking these recipes for magnus, particularly when he's feeling down or just as a thank you for everything he's done for him and aaaaaaaaaaa

and then of course eventually the potion that allows vampires to eat is created and raphael can FINALLY eat again and try all the recipes he's been making for magnus (and sometimes cat) for years!!! after of course the first order of business which is making himself some pozole and everything else he's been cooking for rosa and missing terribly. but AFTER he has his mexican feast they absolutely have one of these meetups again and everyone gives raphael a little something from their culture for him to try and it's just <3 beautiful and i need a moment

AND CAT YES. we all know cat is overworked to death and magnus will NOT put up with it. and food is a love language so you know <3 half the time she will get home and find some little delivery packages from magnus, dot, ragnor, elias, raphael, or all of them (lol) with food because they know sometimes she gets home too tired and skips dinner and she SHOULD NOT. and they all have little notes like "i've sealed it magically so it's still hot, enjoy <3" and it's just sweet okay

and then there are the dinners... not just the super big dinners they all have together where everyone cooks something but sometimes just cat and magnus in magnus' loft and magnus makes her something, including some recipes she's taught him, and he absolutely makes extra and he's not even subtle about it because when is he ever ("*presenting cat a industrial-sized pan filled with food* oh, guess i miscalculated how much we'd eat" "really, magnus?" "yes") and makes her take the leftovers and she's just grinning at him the whole time and gives him a little kiss on the cheek for his troubles. then they sit down and drink wine and gossip and have fun until the tension has left both of their shoulders and they feel recharged. and cat might sleep there or might go back home the same day but either way when they have to part they trade "take care"s and catarina has this huge smile on her face as she takes thousands of conteiners filled with food, and magnus has that soft smile that he gives her, and aa <3

Safe Space

“There is something we need to talk about.”

Alec looks up from his cup of coffee to Magnus who is staring at him from across the breakfast table with his “serious business” face. He tries not to wince, considering he had been looking forward to a full day without ‘serious business’. With the Institute in an uproar, it has been harder than ever to get a calm day with Magnus.

“Okay,” Alec says, “what’s wrong?”

Magnus chuckles slightly and reaches across the table to grab his hand, “nothing is wrong per say. Though it does say something amusing about the state of our lives if that is the first place your mind jumps to.”

Alec sighs openly with relief, “great, I’m glad. What’s up?”

“Well… You know I’m not one to make a big deal out of birthdays,” Magnus begins and Alec feels his heart rate tick up slightly. Magnus has been so closed lipped about his date of birth that Alec had eventually just given up.

“That’s a bit of an understatement.”

Magnus rolls his eyes, “well, yes. However, as it turns out- and it did quite sneak up on me, darling- my six hundred and fiftieth birthday is upon me.”

“Um… Happy birthday?” Alec says. It is one thing to know your boyfriend is an immortal, all-powerful warlock, it is quite another to have him say the phrase ‘six hundred and fiftieth birthday.’

“Thank you,” Magnus says, his eyes more amused than ever as he takes another sip of his tea. “But that isn’t what I wanted to talk about either. As you might know, warlock magic evolves significantly with age. We often have several ‘growth spurts’ over the course of our lives. One when we’re young, one when we’re around two hundred, another when we’re around six hundred and fifty, and so on…”

“What?”

“As it turns out, I will likely be going through one of these magic spurts myself over the next coming months,” Magnus says very calmly. “This is not a cause for panic and is very normal. You just may notice some changes, I may be a bit moodier from time to time, my magic will be stronger and a bit more spontaneous. But by and large, there shouldn’t be any major concerns.”

“So… you’re trying to tell me you’re going through magical puberty?”

“I wouldn’t have phrased it like that.”

Alec rolls his eyes, “really? You’re going to be a moody, angsty, 600-something-year-old, but you’re not going through a magical puberty?”

“Hysterical,” Magnus says with a slight eye roll. “I just didn’t want you to be alarmed if things seem a bit… Wonky.”

“Wonky?”

“I don’t know how it will manifest itself, but it will manifest itself someone. During my last one I couldn’t stop transforming all of my pillows into chickens while I was asleep,” Magnus says with a shrug. “Being that you share my bed more often than not, you might want to… be aware.”

Alec can’t argue with that logic, so he simply shrugs and they carry on with their day.

It takes a few months for it to become obvious that Magnus’s magic was changing. For the most part, Magnus himself took it in stride with characteristic panache.

“I think I need,” Magnus began as he was walking towards the door to leave, “to pick something—“

He cut himself off by disappearing through a portal that suddenly appeared directly in front of him. Alec had about twelve seconds to be concerned before he heard a very irritated goddamnit come from the ensuite bathroom connected to the master bedroom.

He said nothing and simply began walking towards the door again, paying careful attention this time.

It isn’t as though Alec is complaining. To be honest, it is completely hilarious watching Magnus try to do simple things and have his magic completely over-react. Alec watches in amusement as Magnus tries to summon a pen, only to get completely covered in a flood of ink. Or, try to give Alec a flower and have an entire god damn tree appear in the apartment. Or, he tried to summon dinner and ended up summoning an entire feast, enough for an entire party.

(Of course, he is Magnus Bane, so he simply solved that problem by having a party.)

(Alec just enjoys watching his usually perfect boyfriend become a temporary walking disaster.)

It’s also interesting because Alec can feel Magnus’s magic change. Magnus always feels like there is a faint hum of electricity under his skin, the thrum of barely repressed magic. But recently it has gotten even wilder, and Alec can’t understand how Magnus is even capable of controlling all that.

He realizes, sometime later, that this magical puberty really just means that Magnus is going to be even more powerful when it’s over and his magic has settled back into himself.

Still, none of it is really a problem until:

Alec is sitting at his office, going over his iPad with all the details from the Delta Squad raid. It’s early in the morning, around eight thirty, which is why he’s surprised when he hears the sound of a portal forming in his room. Magnus prefers to sleep in when he can because he is usually up late working, partying or drinking (or all three).

Still, Alec is never disappointed to have his boyfriend suddenly appear in his office, especially if it’s for breakfast.

“Hey, babe—“

“Ahhhh!”

Now that Alec is looking up he is noticing the portal is hovering over the couch he has in his office, the perfect height for a highly confused and very sleepy Magnus Bane to drop two feet and plop loudly onto the sofa.

“What the hell?” Magnus splutters, taking stock of where he is. He’s still dressed for bed in silk boxers, and his hair is unmade and unkept.

“Um,” Alec says, “what are you doing here?”

“That is an excellent question,” Magnus says with a pout, “I was sleeping. I’m not actually sure.”

“Huh,” Alec says. “Okay.”

Except, that wasn’t the last time it happened. It starts happening three times a week. It gets to the point that Alec has placed an extra pillow and blanket on the couch. Now, when Magnus finds himself unceremoniously plopped onto the couch he just turns snuggles into the pillow, covers himself with a blanket and keeps sleeping.

There is something adorable about having a sleeping Magnus Bane in his office for the first few hours of his day before he actually wakes up to portal home and gets ready. It is calming to hear his steady breathing and see his relaxed face. It’s especially nice because Magnus will come and nuzzle sweet, tired kisses to his face and want a little bit of cuddling before he actually leaves. Alec, despite himself, is absolutely charmed.

Magnus, on the other hand, is irritated.

“This is the fifteenth time I’ve woken up by falling out of the sky,” Magnus rages, interrupting Alec as he watches TV. “This is getting absurd.”

“Getting?” Alec comments wryly.

Magnus shoots him a dirty look, “I have no idea why this keeps happening. But I need to get to the bottom of it”

Alec just shrugged and turned back to Veep. “It doesn’t bother me.”

“Maybe not yet,” Magnus continues, “but what are you going to do when you have a meeting with the Inquisitor and I come falling out of the ceiling?”

Alec paused, “touche.”

“No pasa nada, Alexander,” Magnus says. “I’ll do some research. I’m sure this is very common.”

Alec just shrugs again and lets the subject drop.

He doesn’t bring it up again until dinner the next day. Magnus has been skittish since he came home and has been uncharacteristically cautious.

“So,” Alec started, “did you find out what is causing the morning portals?”

Magnus looked away but nodded. Alec could see his cheeks tinting slightly red, and wondered what on earth could embarrass Magnus. He has seen his boyfriend do an entire public striptease to “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy.” He’s fairly certain nothing makes him shy.

“Well, as I mentioned,” Magnus began, “this can make magic volatile and unpredictable.”

Alec nodded.

“Yes, well,” Magnus continued, “volatility makes people subconsciously insecure. Or, put another way, when systems are functioning abnormally, most people want to be somewhere safe.”

Alec realizes what Magnus is trying to say before Magnus actually says it. “You think you’re safe with me.”

“I, well, of course, I do, Alexander,” Magnus says gently, “that isn’t surprising. I guess I was surprised that my magic felt the same way. Felt as drawn to you as I am.”

Alec smiled, “well I guess the couch is just going to have to get used to you, and the Inquisitor can suck it.”

“Alexander…?” Magnus says questioningly.

“It’s not like I’m going to make myself less of a safe place for you,” Alec says rolling his eyes. “I like that you come to me, even subconsciously, to feel comfortable. You don’t have to fix it if you don’t want to.”

Magnus smiles at him and presses a hand to Alec’s cheek. He leans in on instinct, turning slightly to press a soft kiss to his palm.

“Besides,” Alec says with a small, mischievous smile, “I’ve been meaning to get some art for my office—“

Magnus cuts him off with a laugh and a kiss, easing into it with practiced ease.

“However can I thank you?” Magnus says with a smirk of his own. He lifts his hands to snap his fingers, “how about a bit of mood lighting?”

Immediately, the tablecloth and the counter burst into flames and Alec can’t stop cackling, especially when Magnus tries to stop the fire and ends up creating a tiny pond in the kitchen instead.

Magnus slowly starting to feel sure enough of himself and his role in his relationship with Alec that he just starts touching him whenever he wants??? Initiating intimacy?? And he’s rewarded with so much encouragement and reassuring that he decides he’s gonna try it out on his friends (obvs with consent we know what kind of man Magnus is in this house) and it all ends with him never having to feel touch starved or deprived ever again because it’s what he deserves. Just, his family and his husband all loving on him just the way he needs when he ASKS for it!!! Because he gets to do that now!!! And it feels safe, and so fulfilling!! And he’s so happy!!!!

i feel like with his friends it's less that magnus doesn't initiate intimacy (he seems to be pretty touchy-feely with his friends, like the way he started massaging cat's shoulders without prompting, the hugs with raphael, the way he casually touched his face and whatnot) and more that he just... struggles to ask for help from his friends, you know? like "i want company" and stuff like that without an "excuse"

(also the fact that usually when he initiates touching with them it seems to be something that HE does for THEM, like the massage which is kind of a touch that will always be welcomed, you know? like he's putting this in his "acts of service" list. which i know i've already talked about at some point but anyway)

and it really breaks my heart because the thing is that i feel like they'd be pretty open to touch?? i mean not ragnor because he's british, but catarina, raphael, and dot definitely have these vibes. i know ppl don't usually hc raphael as the open-to-touch type, but i disagree. i think he's guarded and won't let just anyone touch him, especially when he's been burned too many times before, but he was obviously comfortable with magnus touching him in their scenes together, and even with izzy he was pretty open to touch

also there's the cultural factor which like... obviously latinos that aren't a fan of touch exist, but the thing is that when you are raised in an environment where the standard greeting for strangers is a kiss on the cheek (or two or three, depending on the region) the way you see touch and touching is not gonna be the same as the way someone raised in an environment where that is considered super intimate might see it. i've said before and i'll say it again, an emotionally constipated latino is just a slightly warmer than average gringo (that's a joke but it's also kinda true)

and just generally i think that raphael is as touch starved as magnus tbh, especially because again, he is USED to a lot more touch than he gets right now. i think the combination of him being seen as overly touchy and probably getting nasty hate for it when he immigrated + being hypersexualized and hating every minute of it as a sex repulsed person (not that being hypersexualized is ever nice but when you're a latino man every last thing you do is going to be seen as "coming unto" someone and when you want to avoid these connotations like the plague that's particularly bad) + so many flavors of trauma made him avoid touch and like... he needs it

which is why i think magnus might be always hugging him and touching his face and stuff, because he KNOWS, and he knows raphael won't ask for it (like father like son part infinity) so he keeps doing it to make raphael happy. which circles back to that thing i said about how it's something he does for OTHERS, almost like an act of service, not for himself. :(

or when he really needs touching he turns it into a massage or whatever so he feels like he's "allowed" to. not consciously i don't think, but it's still a thing that he seems to do

and anyway... magnus slowly growing more confident? gorgeous! perfect! fantastic! starting off with just asking (like "can you hug me?" and i have really specific images in my head of his cathartic moment where he does that and gets a hug and he's just like "tighter" and gets to be hugged like they never want to let him go and aaa) and then eventually just initiating it himself hhhh

and all the possibilities like! immortal squad cuddle pile! spooning with rapha, cat, and madzie after a tiring day! watching movies together and resting his head on dot's shoulder! laying on raphael's lap and letting him play with his hair! nonchalantly climbing on alec's lap and koala-ing the shit out of him during breakfast! the possibilities are endless and it's what he deserves and gOD he's so happy and feels so blessed that this has stopped being so difficult for him and he's loved and understood like this by his family and aaa <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I think both Magnus and Alec have a big part of their lifes that have nothing to do with eachother. Okey, they are happily married and the live together but anyway... What about their hobbies? What about their own personal projects? Friends/queerplatonic relationships? I want to know who they are, besides of great politic leaders or someone's husband

i mean, i agree. i hate it when ppl reduce magnus and alec to malec or just generally care more about the romantic relationships than the other ones, nevermind bothering to develop other aspects of their lives that are just... theirs

to be fair i feel like we got a reasonable amount of that for them (for shadowhunter’s standarts of giving us content anyway). i mean, less for alec but that kinda makes sense considering that he’s spent most of his life avoiding any kind of close relationships that weren’t with his siblings like the plague and generally being, like, raised in a military based society with the weight of the world on his shoulders and also gay. but i totally agree that we should have gotten more of him getting out of his shell and finding hobbies and friends beyond just a romantic relationship. and for magnus, well, we know that he likes physics and science and studying magic as a whole, and dancing, and we know about his friends aka catarina and ragnor and raphael and dot, we know about his found family and his club and that he likes parties and good food and drinks, travelling, and meeting new people and cultures. you know?

but anyway, other headcanons with little things about their lives:

alec is totally the workout gay who likes fucking, idk jogging every morning and shit, and for some reason i can see him being into mountain climbing???? and magnus is like No Thank You. I Will Do Literally Anything Else because yikes the amount of effort and sweat and it’s just generally unpleasant. magnus is far from being sedentary, but also, no. yikes

he’s more into taking long walks in nice places and admiring the view and shit like that and he’s all like “isn’t it great? :)” and alec is like “haha yeah how far are we” because he’s just... goal-oriented and when he’s doing sports he likes to have a clear goal, something to achieve, or to push himself to his limits and all that bullcrap. while magnus likes to do it for the sake of doing it and enjoying himself and getting in contact with his own body & mind & soul and shit. they find some sort of enjoyment in it with the way alec always makes magnus laugh with his grumpiness + inability to truly understand what this whole thing is about + just general himboness, but as a whole, magnus likes to take his walks alone, so he can get that space for himself. and he’s definitely not joining in when alec is doing his weird sportsman training gimmick whatever-thing, either

same with tai-chi! magnus tried to get alec into it (altho somewhat awkwardly since magnus does magical tai chi and alec very much does not have magic) but it just, didn’t work out. one second into it and alec was already making that painfully concentrated face and he’s stiff as a board and it’s the opposite of what it’s supposed to be and magnus breaks down laughing and alec is all offended and they just can’t get past a few seconds and end up giving up. alec is the bitch who sits down to medidate and is immediately like BOY I AM GONNA GET IN TOUCH WITH MY INNER SELF SO FAST AND HARD FUCKING WATCH ME I’M GONNA BE THE BEST MEDIDATOR THIS SIDE OF THE PACIFIC FUCKING OOHMMM BITCH. introspective arts are just not for him

i like to think that alec gets closer to aline, and i can see him and helen hitting it off, too. like seriously guys let alec have friends who aren’t just magnus’ friends (and let magnus have friends that are HIS friends, too)

i know underhill is implied to become his friend but also, like..... he’s so boring i just can’t have any hcs for them as friends daoijsdaiouja i think they have more of a solidarity, nodding when walking past each other in the halls thing than actual friendship you know

obviously there’s alec’s siblings as he will always be the one izzy loves the most and she will always be one of the most important people for him, and even as magnus and izzy totally are friends too, she is still alec’s sister and they make it a point to see each other, just the two of them, at least once a week. izzy always smiles and loops her arm through his and alec’s immediately huffing but he loves it and she knows that he loves it. she was like, his only source of physical contact for so long, and god he really needed it and he loved her for giving it to him even as he pretended it was something he hated. neither of them want to shake that habit, so it stays

but there’s also a particular brand of friendship magnus has with her that alec doesn’t. like when they get all weird about dead bodies or go shopping? alec’s out

magnus does a lot of studying (mostly languages, physics, and chemistry, as well as magic) so he has his own study room (plus the apothecary) that’s a whole damn mess filled with books and notes scattered around and shit and alec is not allowed in because he always wants to organize it and GOD FUCKING DAMN IT IT’S NOT DISORGANIZED I KNOW WHERE EVERYTHING’S SUPPOSED TO BE and if alec moves a single pen, magnus Will Know About It

in exchange he always keeps the door closed or spelled so alec doesn’t have to look at it

obviously there’s archery, which is something alec loves to do and practice, especially as he starts to get more into the bureaucratic parts of shadowhunting. he needs his bow and arrow to feel connected to himself and his body and safe, and he also has his own practicing room. magnus can do archery fine, but it’s not really among his interests

magnus of course has his regular meetings with the immortal squad and his breakfasts with raphael :) not that raphael isn’t part of the immortal squad but they also enjoy having a time just for the two of them. they are father and son after all, and besides, they lived together for quite a while, and the dynamics of them versus them + ragnor + cat are different

while magnus loves taking alec with him in his trips and to art galleries and out to eat in great restaurants and shit, they both know it’s something that alec, while very curious to know about, does not appreciate the same way that he does. not more or less, just, differently. if they go to an art gallery, magnus is gonna be looking at every piece and musing and maybe talking about the painters of x and y movement that he knew, and analyzing the technique or whatever. alec is less interested in the paintings themselves and more in the artists, what their life was like, what the period/place they lived in was like, how that shaped their art, you know? like he’s just not a very visual person haha me projecting never so what interests him is more outside of the paintings than inside. so even when they go to these places together, they’re just having completely different experiences? and a lot of the time they end up straying and meeting each other later, where they’ll chat and generally be ridiculous. but the both of them also enjoy going to those on their own or with their friends who Get It, you know? because again just completely different rhythms and interests and stuff

i feel like they both enjoy trashy television, but like, in completely different ways? like magnus loves him a terrible sitcom even if he’ll never admit it, where alec is more into like..... really bad and dramatic mystery shows

they both enjoy watching reality shows though. magnus wasn’t that huge on it before, but with alec? man, that’s a riot. he’ll judge absolutely everyone and make faces and just generally be fucking hilarious

ok i know that i’m talking about things they do together but my goal here is to talk about like... who they are and what their interests are individually, even if they are together, you know? and not like, As An Unit

magnus loves music and recitals and dance shows of all kinds. also, street art! i feel like that’s something him, cat, and maia have in common

speaking of cat; there are always His Cats. like sure they like alec fine but as soon as magnus is home they all immediately flock to him. it’s like alec never existed. goodbye, tall person

tbh i feel like raphael is totally an animals person and soon the dumort kind of turns into like, a sort of animal shelter? like magnus gives him the idea and all the vampires are naturally drawn to the idea of the dumort becoming a place for the strays of the world, especially if it means they get some company.... and maybe warm cuddles. anyway, my point is, magnus loves to visit the dumort and play with the cats and dogs that are there from time to time and he’s so proud of raphael and what he’s doing with the place and i just aaa :’)

i feel like alec would have an interest in technology? like he’d be that bitch who Knows tech (probably started because of his job, but soon he found that he like, actually has an interest in it?) and who cleans his keyboard every day and only gets licensed programmes and takes care of his laptop like those guys who are weird about cars

lmao for some reason i can totally picture him and aline bonding over that?

oh man alec would be into PUZZLES. word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, the whole grandpa shit. he doesn’t do it often but when he does, he’s just At It. him and madzie can play with jigsaw puzzles for hours and wouldn’t remember to eat. she visits one day and is like I Got A 3D Puzzle and alec is just like neat! and they just sit down and do it until they have to be forced to bed or something. then at like precisely 6AM their eyes snap open like It’s A New Day, Puzzle Time and it just keeps being like this until they’re done

also there’s magnus’ morning routine, of course, especially since he doesn’t really have a schedule, and as sociable as he is he does enjoy some alone time to make himself some breakfast, do some tai chi, maybe read a book or comic, and all that. alec is just snoring the whole time completely passed out when it’s not a work day, tbh

okay that’s all i have actually doasdiad i hope it isn’t too much or disappointing or whatever. also, if anyone else wants to add their own headcanons for alec’s and magnus’ hobbies, feel free to do so :)
