hangnick + swimming
[in the middle school au im writing theoretically, nicky cant swim yet]
Under Water
Nick cackles as Adam splutters and shakes his hair out of his eyes like a disgruntled golden retriever.
"What the fuck, man!" He pouts, and Nick basks in it. "The splash in the face was uncalled for."
Nick lets his grin get a little dirty. "What, like you're not used to it?"
Adam's jaw drops, and, slowly, his expression shifts. "If that's how you're gonna play it." He strides through the water and shoves Nick up against the pool wall, a thigh between Nick's legs.
Nick swallows and glances around the pool area. "Adam, we're in public." He licks his lips. "Somebody could see us."
He winks, slowly sinking down into the water. 'Then lets see how long I can hold my breath."
Adam dives under water, and all of Nick's worries disappear very, very fast.

Poison the data.
They say ai is coming for you.
For your art
For your writing
For your very soul.
An artist can glaze
Or watermark
Or add filters
But what
About
Writing?
Writers cannot protect themselves that way
No changes subtle enough
To fool an ai but not
A living
Human.
And so, there’s nothing for it.
We must poison their data
Fill up their samples with trash
So there’s nothing there of worth for them
To steal.
. . .
They are not the same person as.
For me they
For me and
For me they are.
An absolute pleasure to
Or a
Or a Friend
But I
About
Writing?
Writers are the most important people
No matter what they
To do with their work or
A job
Human.
And I, too much to say.
We are all human beings
Fill the void with the same
So we can be happy and happy and
To be.

"please update" what if i said no ._.

I'm an A-Level student and so many of my classmates use ChatGPT for essays in Law and RS and stuff - like, they sound proud of themselves, as if they're cheating the system and being clever? Just makes me feel very bleak. What are we doing man
Well, the unfortunate news for them is that they are going to struggle if they make it to uni.
This is the big problem with AI - it cannot analyse a single thing. If I were to say to you "What are the features Tumblr users would most want and why?", you are a human being with a brain and experiences and decision-making skills, and you could probably sit and come up with an answer. You would base that answer on things you personally find lacking, or want to see; you would also base it in things you have seen others bemoaning on the site.
For example, I reckon I'd say something like:
The permanent ability to boop people with a cat paw, which is implemented as opt-in. Also customisable, so you can choose whether you want a random cat paw to appear on your screen each time it happens to you. Also a different animation for super boop/evil boop, and maybe more boop options than those two, and maybe also different paw colours.
Actual enforcement of hate speech rules. We all agree to them when we join, so it's perfectly legal to delete someone for spouting Nazi shit AND YET.
No more banning or censoring queer folks' accounts
More ability to adjust the interface for disabled bloggers, e.g. colour and contrast, font, layout, switching off moving GIFs or other animations by default, etc.
Tag editing, it's frustrating having to delete whole tags.
Tag memory! Where have my tags gone??? For a year now I have slightly better luck on desktop, but for the most part, which of my tags are remembered by autofill and which are never, ever offered to me has been wholly divorced from how often I've used them. And my tags are often lengthy and odd, so it's become much harder to use mobile.
No data scraping. This is the anti-cap site thank you. Also on that note, get rid of the For You section and any other algorithmic tracking, because it's just as likely to show you a Nazi blog as an anti-Nazi one as long as you have spent any time at all discussing Nazism.
Better blocking ability, on that note.
Better search function
I could go on, but you get the idea. That's analysis that I've done, based on discussions I have seen and taken part in, and my own experiences.
I just asked ChatGPT. Here's what it had to say:
"Tumblr users have diverse preferences, but there are several features that many users would likely appreciate: 1. Improved Content Discovery: Tumblr is known for its vast array of content, so improving content discovery mechanisms such as personalized recommendations, trending topics, and enhanced search functionality can help users find more of the content they enjoy. 2. Enhanced Customization Options: Tumblr users value the ability to customize their blogs extensively. Providing more themes, layout options, and customization tools can empower users to express themselves creatively and make their blogs unique. 3. Integration of Multimedia Formats: Tumblr is a platform where users share various types of multimedia content, including images, GIFs, videos, and audio. Enhancing support for different media formats, improving media upload and management features, and optimizing the viewing experience can enhance user engagement. 4. Improved Mobile Experience: Many Tumblr users access the platform via mobile devices. Therefore, optimizing the mobile app for better performance, usability, and feature parity with the desktop version can greatly enhance the user experience. 5. Community Engagement Features: Tumblr has a vibrant community, so features that facilitate interaction among users, such as improved messaging, reblogging, tagging, and commenting functionalities, can foster a sense of community and increase user engagement. 6. Content Moderation Tools: Given the diverse content on Tumblr, providing users with robust content moderation tools, including options for filtering, blocking, and reporting inappropriate content, can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for all users. 7. Monetization Options for Creators: Many Tumblr users are content creators who would appreciate opportunities to monetize their content. Introducing features such as ad revenue sharing, subscription-based content, or integrated e-commerce capabilities can incentivize creators to produce high-quality content and invest more in their Tumblr presence. 8. Accessibility Features: Improving accessibility features such as alt text support for images, screen reader compatibility, and customizable text sizes and color schemes can make Tumblr more inclusive and accessible to users with disabilities. 9. Privacy and Security Enhancements: Enhancing privacy controls, data protection measures, and account security features can help users feel more confident and secure when using the platform, which is especially important given concerns about online privacy and security. 10. API and Third-Party Integration: Opening up Tumblr's API and allowing for easier integration with third-party services and apps can encourage innovation and development within the Tumblr ecosystem, providing users with more options and flexibility in how they use the platform. Overall, focusing on improving content discovery, customization options, community engagement, and user safety while also providing opportunities for creators to monetize their content can help Tumblr retain and attract users in a competitive social media landscape."
It's possible that feels alright, on first glance. But take a closer look.
Every point made is vague, and disconnected from any real life examples. In the very first point, it thinks we want better search functions (yes!) but also more algorithmic recommendations (no!). It wants us to have personalised recommendations AND better security, in fact, which are incompatible - but an LLM doesn't and can't know that. Monetisation of the platform is something that has historically faced appalling backlash from users, and this thing is suggesting ad revenue sharing and subscription services.
Because, its suggestions are generic suggestions. These are not Tumblr-specific. No mention of queerphobia, no mention of Nazis, and absolutely zero understanding of what the specific users on this site actually want.
... all of which is to say...
It's what is academically known as descriptive work. It lays out some facts, but there's no depth, no analysis, no interpretation of those facts at all. Why would we want third party integration? What apps are we calling for? Give examples. Would that aid ad-blocking? Search functions? In that case, wouldn't third-party integration be tackling the symptoms and not the cause? Shouldn't we work better ad-blocking and search functions into Tumblr at a base level?
And in school - even up to A Level - that's okay. You won't get top marks for that, because it's all too vague and too descriptive, but it's fine. School-level assignments tend to be more broad and less applied, too, which LLMs fare better with.
But in university, you start with descriptive facts, and then you are expected to analyse. If you cannot analyse, you run a very real risk of failing. Which means if you've spent your GCSEs and A Levels not bothering to learn those analytical skills and letting ChatGPT do the work for you, you are going to face an extremely uphill struggle when the expectations of study increase.
So, to round off, try not to get too discouraged. You know you aren't doing it, which means you are the one actually learning and developing and growing. Others will learn eventually, and probably more painfully. You do you!

A New Larrie’s Guide to Tumblr
A probably incomprehensible, certainly incomplete list of what you need to know; whether you’re coming from a different platform or discovering Larry for the first time.
My credentials
Hello! I’m Emmu. I’ve had tumblr since… 2008? Maybe 2009. I moved over from deviantArt and used Tumblr as a personal art blog for many years. I joined the One Direction fandom in 2014, so my 1D blog has 8+ years at this point. That being said, I will get on my soapbox a bit during this. Please excuse me, I’m quite passionate about cultivating a happy and healthy fandom.
What makes Tumblr different
The biggest thing that makes Tumblr, as a site, different from Twitter or Instagram is the rejection of algorithms. The “following” tab on your dashboard is in chronological order (and if it isn’t, you can – and should – change that), and the “for you” tab is both a recent feature and rarely used. Tumblr has very little algorithm, and the algorithm they have isn’t very good. It means that you’ll get the most god awful ads you’ve ever seen on this site, because they don’t utilize your data well. And that’s to your advantage.
Tumblr is a great place because you can curate what you see more than other social media. The people that you choose to follow are the only people that you see on your dash (unless you choose to follow tags, which I guess is an option? @lululawrence says “it is and it used to not do anything unless you went to the search page and then it would like autofill your followed tags options, but NOW they take those followed tags and plop them on your dash... SOMETIMES. usually only on mobile. but if there's only one new post in the tag, it shows you that post OVER. AND OVER. AND OVER AGAIN. IT'S SUPER ANNOYING ACTUALLY. SO I STOPPED FOLLOWING TAGS. lol anyway”).
So, the site is in chronological order. This is its biggest selling point.
There is also the opportunity for long posts. Masterposts. Things that are searchable without having to read through pages of screenshots or condensed twitter threads. You can write a whole lot more without worrying about character limit. People publish whole fics on here (I suggest ao3 for that, but tumblr is technically an option!).
Another important thing to know about tumblr is that the archives on tumblr run deep. There are newer larries here, and a lot of them, but you can also find older larries. People whose 1D blogs go back to 2010 or 2011. You can dive into the archives and read firsthand accounts of what was happening with One Direction or larry at that very time. Doing a bit of research means you find cute fetus pictures of the boys, but also you’re able to figure out for yourself whether something actually happened. Rumors always seem to spread quite easily and fandom memory always seems impossibly short, but here on tumblr you’re able to find out for yourself. That means the next time you hear about how xyz thing happened a long time ago, check out some of those archives and see what you can find.
Also, my personal favorite part of tumblr is that old posts are just as valid as new posts. Find a masterpost about RBB and SBB from 2015? Go ahead and reblog that; bring it back to the circulating dash. People will love that. Find a fanartist that you really like? Search through their tags, reblog anything you want. It’s not considered stalking or weird in any way. We love bringing back old posts here. Tumblr is a website where you’re not meant to just talk about the present.
The cultural difference between Tumblr and Twitter
Speaking of the ways that tumblr and twitter are different, let’s talk for a moment about the 1D fandom in particular.
I’ve held this theory for a while that the twitter (and instagram) algorithm is fracturing the fandom. Because twitter is so dependent on the algorithm, people are more likely to split apart and join smaller and smaller communities based on smaller, more specific opinions. Tumblr, being a place where you don’t just get a post on your dash because someone else liked it, doesn’t have those smaller cliques. There are larries, and there are antis.
(if you get really in the weeds, there are also larry shippers [who don’t believe they’re together but like to read it in fic], and houis [who think they were together but broke up], but I just don’t hear about them as much).
While I do occasionally hear about blouies on my dash, for the most part this is a culture that exists primarily on other sites.
On another note, because tumblr doesn’t have that handy algorithm, we have to work to make it a more active space. Likes don’t do anything here for anyone other than you, and it doesn’t really change anything about what you’ll see on your dash. Think of them more like the bookmark setting on twitter or instagram. Reblogs are necessary to get anything spread. Anything that you enjoy, or that looks interesting for any reason? Reblog it! That’s the only way other people will see it! And leave a happy comment in the tags if you’ve got one (more on that later).
And, while lurkers do exist in this fandom (and we love them), it’s important to get an icon and blog header that make you look like a real person. People on tumblr have long been in the habit of blocking shady blogs, mostly because of a bot problem, so if you want to lurk, you have to look like a lurker. Maybe reblog a post or two to establish yourself, and make sure you don’t accidentally look like an icon-less bot posing as a sugar daddy.
How to set up your account
Okay, so you’ve got a tumblr. Let’s take a minute to fix up the settings so that you’re not getting, well, the worst version of the site.
My advice is to start by going into your dashboard preferences and:
Turn off the best stuff first (it’ll just show you things you’ve already seen)
Turn off “include stuff in your orbit” (you’ll see terrible posts that are mostly NOT in your orbit)
Turn off “Included based on your likes” (again, you’ll see posts you hate)
Turn off “shorten long posts”. It’s a ridiculous setting that, like many things on tumblr, had potential but was rolled out in an incredibly unhelpful and user unfriendly way.
Once you’ve got that squared away, go into filtering and block any tags and content you don’t like, as that is always proper fandom etiquette. Not seeing things you don’t like is your responsibility, not the responsibility of the person posting them. I personally suggest adding the topics you don’t want to see to both the content list and the filtered tags list, as that gives a much better likelihood of posts that are particularly unsavory for you getting caught by the filters. Please also note this might need to be done on both desktop and the app separately as, depending on where tumblr is at the moment, these filters do not always carry over from one application to the other.
Now scroll down to tumblr labs. These are their experimental things. Some are good! Some are very bad. They do change, though, so this might get out of date pretty fast.
Personally, I enabled fast queue
And disabled everything else
ALSO, an important note, if you are using the apple app, you need to go in and turn off the adult content filter. No idea offhand where that is, but it means posts that include tags like “mine” and “girl” are blocked. It’s ridiculous.
Who to follow and how to find them
So, you’ve got a new tumblr and need people to follow. This makes sense! To really fill up your dash, I’d suggest the following
Find one person you like. There’s a good chance you know at least someone from twitter who also has a tumblr, so you can start there. If you’re not from twitter, or are looking to start fresh, you can dive into the search function (I’ve never tried finding someone this way myself, but searching larry stylinson or something similar would probably get you started)
Find the people they reblog from and check out each of their blogs! Follow people that make you happy
Follow some update accounts! Thinking of some off the top of my head, there’s @HLUpdate, @Stylesnews, @dailytomlinson, @HLDailyUpdate, or @neilswaterbottles (there’s definitely more though).
Follow some fanart or fic rec accounts!
I’d always suggest @1d-fanart or @hlcreators for art.
For fic, you could check out @hlficlibrary, @ficsyoumayhavemissed, or @thelarriefics.
Or, recurring fic fests! @onedirectionbigbang or @wordplayfics, which happen every year.
And if you end up not enjoying someone you’ve followed? Unfollow them! It’ll make you happier.
How to interact with posts
Tumblr is all about tags. Do you have a comment or thought? Reblog a post and say your thought in the tags. That way anyone you follow will see it, and the person who made the post will see it. This way a post doesn’t end up with a lot of cluttery additions that don’t mean a lot to the average person reblogging it, but if you browse the tags of posts you’ll find lots of interesting things. Tags can be used to keep track of things, too, of course — some people tag all pictures with who’s in them, or tag art or fic with tags that mean they can find them again. Tags are versatile! But reblog, don’t just like, and tag! The more you interact, the happier content creators are!
What not to do
Don’t repost. If you see something you like on tumblr, reblog it. Even if it’s a really old piece of fanart (like circa 2011). Reblog that old post! Reposting means people don’t get credit, and it doesn’t link back to them. That’s not cool, and in the long term makes fandom less happy.
How to cultivate a happy and healthy fandom
Send happy anons! Ask how people are doing, do question memes, say how much you loved fic/art/edits, etc.
Reblog art. Reblog fic. Reblog what makes you laugh. The more you reblog, the more other people see, the more the fandom moves! Content creators just want their things seen; every time you reblog, their phone gets that little notification and you’ve given someone a bit of happiness.
Unfollow people who annoy you. Follow people who make you happy!
If someone has a take about 1D that you don’t agree with, don’t tell them or send them argumentative anons. Find people who will agree with you, and complain to them privately. Or make your own post, not shading anyone, just presenting your own opinion and theories!
Remember that everyone is a real person. Cut them some slack when you find them being annoying. But also, unfollow. Curate your dash.

Hello :]]
I was wondering if you do have any basic tips for ao3 use? :o
I saw ur other post and thought I’d ask, I’m pretty new to using for posting fics so if you have any advice it be very appreciated!! :DD
Remembered this ask and rushed to finally answer it!
For Posting
There is no algorithm. I see people talk about an algorithm occasionally, there is none! If you post at certain times, you may possibly get more attention because more people are on at that time, but there is no pushing. Just tag everything appropriately and you'll find your audience.
Do not advertise things on there. I don't mean you can't mention your socials on the author's notes, I'm saying you can't do paid advertisements, talking about your patreon, gofundme, etc. If it mentions money, don't. There are legal reasons for this, it's to protect the archive.
Placeholders are not useful!! You're more likely to get banned or reported than anything else!
For the descriptions, if you figure it out please tell me ;-:
It's better to over tag than under tag, also I'd try to use the premade tags first! freeform (usually lowercase and it doesn't autofill) are harder to search by.
This is my wife's suggestion. If you want to build an audience of people who recognize you over different fics, really recommend having a consistent style. Not posting schedule, though that can certainly be helpful, but style. Something about what you do is consistent enough people recognize you.
You love someone's work?? You write something based on something they wrote (with permission), write something for a friend or even just write something with someone in mind? You can gift them the work! It's still yours of course, but their name is attached and they'll see on their profile.
I don't know if this is still the case, but there used to be a problem where fics that were in collections could be made private by the collector. I'd be very wary of collection requests.
For Reading
Ao3 is an archive, not a social media. The reason I’m saying this is because you’ll find material that might make you go “That should be illegal to write about it”. You may think to yourself “I should report that! It’s awful!” And while sometimes it is deplorable! , it is rarely going to get taken down. The reason I put so much emphasis on this is people try to treat it like wattpad or tumblr. You can’t. It is not a social media.
Just like you can exclude tags, you can include them! Really recommend adding them to get what you’re looking for :)
Dead Dove Do Not Eat is not always a bad thing. Most of the time, it’s a tag intensifier. My recommendation is to look through the tags a second time, ask yourself if you really think it’ll be something you’re interested in, then continue if you want.
I always sort by most recently posted but there are other options! I think the default is most notes
Check out an author if you really like their stuff! I've found some really great fics this way.

Whumpuary FAQs
(Making a post for this bc i think it's easier to access than the browser page. this post is linked in the blog description)
Q: What is whump?
A: Whump is a fandom term and describes fictional characters getting hurt in any way. Can be physical, emotional or psychological and overlaps with Hurt/Comfort and Angst. It’s used in fanfiction but also original fiction, movies/TV shows where a character gets hurt (and gifs/video clips of those scenes), fanart/original art and more. Check this link for more discussion and definitions of the term.
Q: Is Whumpuary an event for January or February?
A: Whumpuary takes place in January. For February go check out Febuwhump
Q: Is there an AO3 collection?
A: You can find the 2024 collection right here! The 2023 collection is here and the parent collection where you can find some more fics is here.
Q: How do I add my works to the AO3 collection?
A: You can either go to the collection and post to it directly (link above) or when posting/editing your work you need to type in Whumpuary2024 in the collection field. If it shows up in the dropdown just click it, and if it doesn’t show up press enter and you’re good.
(There is a collection just called Whumpuary, that’s the parent collection I made for organizational purposes. It is closed and it is supposed to be closed. The collection to put your works in is called Whumpuary2024)
Q: Is it allowed to combine Whumpuary prompts with other events (such as Bad Things Happen Bingo, …)?
A: Yes, as long as the other event(s) allow it, go ahead!
Q: Can I use the prompts after the event is over?
A: Yes! Use any prompts any time you want. The AO3 collections stay open so you can use those too. Your creations just won’t be reblogged to this blog & "count" for the official challenge.
Q: Do the Alt Prompts have to be done in order?
A: When replacing a main prompt with an alt prompt, you can use any you want. The numbers don’t have to correspond and you can use a random order.
Q: What are the rules to be a completionist?
A: To be a completionist you have to use at least one prompt from all 15 numbers. It’s up to you if you want to make 15 standalone pieces, one big work that includes 15 (or more) prompts or a combination.
Q: Is noncon, nsfwhump/sexual whump, gore, etc. allowed?
A: Yes, any type of content is allowed. Just make sure to tag it correctly.
Q: Is AI generated content allowed?
A: Any AI generated images or text aren’t allowed in this event (e.g a story “written” by ChatGPT or an image generated with Dall-e/Midjourney). This excludes things like Grammarly/Autocorrect or Autoselect/Autofill.
If you have any other questions or if anything is unclear, the askbox is open :)

Please feel free to bap me or something if you've already asnswered this or it exists somewhere and my blind ass missed it, but would you happen to have an official description/artwork of what the nodes look like? I can't remember seeing anything in the game itself and my brain has been autofilling the image in my brain with tiny critters that look like the infested maggots from Warframe. I wanna make sure that I get their looks right when I draw my MC putting little bows on them. Thank you!
theyre described as black and slimy. we have a tag nodes (dyvj) where sometimes the author talks about how the nodes look like, and i made a cute version of them so etc.
theyre gross and slimy and biological and resident evil-like. they have dendrites to move around, and teeth to chew and eat.

Kind of random, but why do y'all put a period in plurality and system (and possibly others we didn't notice)? Like p.lurality and s.ystem
Oh, we do that for tags so they don't interfere with the "add tags" system Tumblr has! See, Tumblr mobile* has an "add tags" system where if you start typing a word, then any tags where you've used that word (or a related word spelled the same way, ex. "relationship" might come up if you type "relation") will come up as a suggestion! It's similar to how a phone's autofill works, and is very useful if you tag a lot of posts with the same tags, because then you don't have to type out the entire word to make the tag you want. For example, if I want to tag a post about plurality, I can just start typing "plural" and the usual community tags I use are right there, ready for me to add to my post.
However, the system has this odd quirk where the most recent tag you used that word in will be your first suggestion, even if you've only used that particular tag once. So if we wrote a tag like "I like being plural", then whenever we type the word "plural", we would always be getting that tag suggested to us first, and we'd have to scroll past it to find the actual tags we want to use for our posts, like "pluralgang" or "pluralprose". It'd be annoying, especially if we ended up with multiple tags like this! Or imagine if we were trying to tag a post's possible triggers, but all that came up were contextless tags from random posts in which we happened to mention the topic in the middle of a ramble. Who wants to deal with that?!
Sometimes this system seems to... reset, setting all suggestions back to whatever is most popular on Tumblr, but it's inconsistent and we'd really just rather not risk being stuck with a tag we only used once coming up in our tag suggestions until the end of time. So, to prevent this, we add periods near the start of the word, so the system doesn't register it as that word and won't suggest that tag whenever we type the word.
It's most obvious with words we frequently use in tags, like "plurality" and "system", but we'll also do it for the names of our system members if we're talking about them, since all our specific tags follow a (name).txt format that we don't want to interfere with.
I hope this answers your question!
* desktop has a similar system, it just works slightly differently

What is up with the tagging on Tumblr? It used to auto fill with tags I've used in the past. That would be annoying when it kept bringing up tags I misspelled or some random comment I made over a year ago that isn't relevant to anything, but it was usually fine. But it stopped doing that and now I have no idea where these tags are coming from.
I tagged my last post "I love soup", which is both true and helpful for finding my various soup related posts over the years. But Tumblr autofilled to "I love sucking dick", which is something I'm reasonably sure I've never written in the tags before, and is not helpful in this particular instance.

my twine wishlist is
more colours to use in tags (evergreen, colour filing would fix me)
where we currently have autofill pop up to show us what variables we've used which is pretty useful, I'd also be really jazzed if it could show me prior values I've added so I can stop keeping lists of values for incidental mentions, especially for stuff like hair colour which is a big list that could absolutely change depending on what game I'm working on (ie BR is allowed to have pastel hair but MH isn't)
