The best birthday present ever was that my mom who literally never watched anything Star Wars before agreed to sit down and watch The Force Awakens with me. Which incidentally is also the first time I saw it with German dubbing, so here, have some incoherent thoughts:

First things first: I mean, casting Daniel Craig for a stromtrooper cameo was already pretty extra, but noooo, German dubbing tptb had to top even that by actually hiring Dietmar Wunder to voice Craig’s five second cameo. Likea DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO HIRE DIETMAR FUCKING WUNDER just so that he can swagger his ass into a Berlin recording studio to do like idelkten takes for 2,5 sentences?! It is INSANE but also the amount of dedication is SO admirable, I LOVE BJÖRN SCHALLA who supervised all of the recording process.

Speaking of dedication, kudos once more to Björn for also both hiring Philipp Moog as Ewan Mc Gregor-Obi Wan and digging up archive material of the German voice OT Obi Wan for Rey’s force visions, staying THIS close to the OV, I AM IN TEARS ;__;

Poe and Rey sound SO old like jfc, I have no clue who Kaya Marie Möller is and I don’t doubt that she’s a capable voice actress, but she makes Rey sound like a middle-aged housewive with 3,4 kids and like...NO.

never heard of the guy they cast to voice John Boyega but he absolutely NAILED it, best performance of the whole dubbing cast imo

Dude, the German version of the Poe/Finn reunion really goes hard on the ‘no homo’ vibes, it is hilarious, especially bc it’s such a blatant contrast with the visuals presented on screen

Julien Haggége (yo, sorry man but I’ll always like your sister more) as Kylo was ok, I guess, he actually sounded younger than Adam does, but not in a distracting way.Also, I feel slightly embarrassed though that I apparently can tell when they just kept the OV by the way Adam grunts in fight scenes, I can already feel @tribaltrudy kinkshaming me (proof that I watched too many episode of Girls hbo?!)

Ghadah Al-Akel ist THE perfect choice for Maz Kanata and I just don’t get why they replaced her with Regina Lemnitz in tlj? Like, I really really like Lemnitz but Ghadah Al-Akel is so close to Lupita N’yongo, you’d be a fool to re-cast her.

Susanna...Susanna...Susanna <3<3<3 Like, German Leia almost sounds younger than Rey, and definitely SO different than Carrie, but I don’t even mind because well, HOW DOES THIS WOMAN DO IT? If I hadn’t known it was her, I never would’ve recognized her bc she sounds nothing like Bib Blocksberg or Fran Fine. WITCHCRAFT

Katrin Fröhlich as Phasma is the German dubbing equivalent to casting Gwendoline Christie as Phasma, both is a HUGE waste of talent, but I’m glad we got them right here with us.
