Listen,I like to believe this man is actually really jealous, but will you ever find out? HELL NO, he's increadible at hiding his emotions, and these ones especially. But sometimes he can't hold back, like in this situation.

You two were at a gathering, you just came along with blade so you don't really know what it's all about, but you saw Kafka and silver wolf also came so you guessed it's something business related.

Most of the night you've spend next to blade, just clinging to his arm, and following him around like a lost puppy. He himself isn't that sociable, do you both just ended up sitting in a corner and chatting. After a while blade left because Kafka was being a idiot and he didn't want her drunk ass to get in trouble. He didn't expect you to get attention from other people on the party in such a short period of time. He finally handed Kafka over to silverwolf and when he turned to come back to you, he saw something that made him want to spill blood. A guy (obviously drunk) was leaning on the table in front of you and blabbering something. You (trying to be nice) listened to him and just awkwardly smiled, blade came over and then realised that this man was using cringy pick up lines on you. He approached the situation, sat next to you and just, stared, no words coming out of his mouth,just his life threatening gaze staring into the man's soul. You could sense that blade was getting quite ready to draw his blade, so you trying to calm the situation down told the man you're not interested and that he should probably leave. Him being drunk and not understanding the life threatening situation hes in, didn't get the hint. Blade just sighs and tells you it's better time to get going and get out of this pathetic place. He actually handled the situation a lot better...(in his mind it was a lot different...). Later you probably teased him about being jealous, he would just ignore you.

If you had never watched it before, Ray is an orphan from GraceField orphanage, and he's one of the smartest children there. He's very introverted and apathetic, so he mostly spends time reading books instead of playing with the other children.

Like I said before, he's very intelligent and a good strategizer. His plans often catch people off guard, but they do work.

And in the anime/mangga, he's pretty suicidal and tried lighting himself on fire. ( He was quickly stopped because [insert character] caught the match before it hit the floor. )

Kafka noticed right away, that there was something different about you. You were quiet and reserved, often keeping away from everyone to read your books alone. You weren't sociable and disliked anyone talking to you outside of work related things. You intrigued Kafka alot, especially as you at least seemed to tolerate her. Not that you had much of a choice, with her being your assigned caretaker.

With that said, she often praised you for your intelligence. You were alot smarter than you let on and whilst your plans were a little unique, they still always worked out perfectly in the end. She'd always stand there smiling smugly at those who doubted you too, knowing full well that your plans would work.

One thing she did miss though, was your disinterest in being alive. So it came to a shock to her, when she saw you attempting to light yourself on fire. She never expected it and so she moved fast to stop you from doing so. Kafka quickly pulled you into her embrace, unable to say a word, as she just rubbed your back whilst you cried. You were too important to her to die and ever since that day, she made sure you'd never be alone again either. You had her, after all.

》Blade

Blade didn't mind how introverted and quiet you were. In fact, he preferred it, as it meant that you wouldn't ask much of him or annoy him either. You both enjoyed to keep everything to yourselves and only interacted when it was necessary. But this didn't mean, that Blade didn't keep his eyes on you.

He was secretly very impressed by your intelligence and skills, often wondering how such a child could come up with these elaborate and unique plans, that always worked flawlessly. It made him develop huge trust in you and your abilities, going as far as to even ask for your opinion whenever it's needed first. Despite your age, he still respects you.

One thing he definitely found off about you however, is that you were always so apathetic, which he found odd for a kid your age. He often questioned why that was, which would just earn him an indifferent answer. But he didn't need one, as your actions spoke for you. He was quick to shut your suicide attempt down and stop you from trying anything ever again. He isn't good with emotions and doesn't want to live himself. But you still had a chance at a good life and so he'd make sure, that you would have one.

》Silver Wolf

Silver Wolf understood how you felt and often left you alone as a result of it. Or at least, visually alone, as she was usually still nearby somewhere to make sure you were okay. She eventually got close enough to you through your interest in books and her love for video games, which made you two practically inseparable. You were both indifferent and mostly introverted, so you got along well.

You always aided her during missions, coming up with elaborate and unexpected escape plans, whenever Herta was close to discovering you two. She also taught you how to hack or code, as you were very intelligent and learned fast. She'd always acknowledge how proud she was of you with a head pat and a snack she gave you.

But even so, she still noticed the darkness that manifested within you over time. She knew your indifference came from a sadder, lonelier part of you and that it was only a matter of time, until you truly had enough. And so, she always stayed close by, stopping anything that even looked like an attempt at your life with ease, whilst acting all natural, despite her aching heart. But you at least knew, that you could count on her.

Because she told Kafka to "tighten the leash on Blade," and "he's leaving baubles(gifts)," meaning he's been after ndarling before they officially meet?? 🤔 but... why?? ndarling's mother refused some kind of deal with the stellaron hunters, sooo.... did the deal involve bartering off ndarling to aid in things like suppressing Blade's mara (if that's the only reason)? Also, so Eris is affected with the stellaron 🤔 and the hunters aren't helping becoz it seems moma didn't fulfil her end of the bargain - which was likely set to receive the stellaron hunters' support. Also 😬 was moma's husband also a victim to that "baser-and-immoral-desires-amplifying" ability that she (and later her daughter has)? Huge thanks if you choose to answer 🤗 take care!!

i don't think there's anything poor about your comprehension, anon!! i intentionally left the answers to those questions hazy or inconclusive. i wanted the reader to experience the same confusion and bewilderment n darling does in that moment, since it was the absolute last thing she expected.

i'm confident that chapter five will clear everything up (for better or for worse).

the one thing you mentioned that isn't given a decisive answer is relating to n darling's father. since there's nothing spoiler-y about it, i'll answer that here!

you called it — n darling's father succumbed to the id enhancing affects the exalted arbiters involuntarily emanate. it got to the point that he had to be separated from ania for her safety. hence her telling lear:

‘If you truly care about her, you need to end this before she gets hurt.’

what's a bit sadly ironic is that it is possible to manage this, but ania's experience was so harrowing she didn't consider it possible. lear ultimately coming to terms with his own shortcomings rather than repressing them serves as something of a loophole.

(fun fact: the reason why nona isn't negatively impacted by being around n darling is because she lives the way she wants, completely uninhibited JSLFJA)

Well, I'm sorry to tell that anon and to you too Sonic, I can't write fics at all. And it is not for lack of trying believe me. I've tried many times to get even one chapter out on various writing site but it never goes well. You got no idea just how awkard and morbid it all is. Theres many talks between Kafka and everyone to make sure they are not crossing even more lines and what nots. And the DF pretty much double check any kaiju they get after this as well. Though the high command breath a sigh of relief once they learn that Kafka is the last living Hibino.

Until he finds himself someone. Then theres possible that there will be more as thanks to coming from a long line of kaijus, Kafka has some interesting bits inside of him to say the least that will allow him to have kids one way or the other. Which once again is not helped by Tiny.

I'm blamming you on this part just so you know. Your take on kaiju biology is quite interesting and fun to read about.

Honestly I don't blame you as writing can be difficult for everyone. Guess that's another master list I'm making so if anyone does want to take a shot then there's the material altogether and a permission.

You can say it was one way for the Defense Force to triple check their kaiju targets. Using human hybrids for armor and equipment definitely feels a hell of a lot more awkward than the normal with the context given. Won't be surprised if the superstitious bunch believe they made cursed items as human flesh in some capacity or religions is a taboo material.

LMFAO Considering how different KN8 kaiju behave and the series actually delving into said biology unlike other kaiju related media, it was too tempting. Especially when I decided to hybridize the himbo already because his kaiju powers would affect all of him.

Nature gives some pretty insane inspiration for me to work from if I don't feel like grasping for concepts regarding mythology or other media. Kafka's face when he realizes just how deep the changes are for both forms. 😂

As long as the himbo doesn't drink any magical river water that acts similar to the "Child and Mother Spring" from Journey To The West then everyone's safe from surprise children for a little while longer.

Hey, first of all I'm so sorry that I took so long to answer, this ask has been sitting in our inbox for forever. I've been really busy these past few weeks, and I wanted to save it for when I could sit down and properly think about what I wanted to say.

I suppose that the world does, like you've said, need more people who are willing to criticise and more people who are willing to accept constructive feedback without taking it to be an attack on their personal self. We've become a very...fake society, in that way, rarely giving our honest opinions on anything---this place's become so complicated to live in. It's saddening.

The podcast is done by Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, and they use bag-related categories to structure interviews with guests (what’s in your bag? H:  Hello and welcome to a new episode of „Auf eine Tüte“.  My guest today is Eren Güvercin.  Eren is an actor (the interviewer actually uses a gender-neutral form) and artist, and those of you who have watched Druck know Eren in the role of Ismail, low-key my favorite character and I’m extremely happy that today we’re meeting via video call for Auf eine Tüte. Hey, Eren.

E: Hi.  I’m super nervous, and thank you for the invitation

H: Nice to have you here, I’m nervous too.  (Eren laughs) – Is this your first podcast?

E: Uh-huh.

H:  I’m sure there’ll be many more.

E: It’s great to have the first one with you actually, because I knew you before you knew me and had followed your articles and I read everything, so I’m feeling this (laughs)

H: So cute, super nice! (Eren laughs) – Are you at home?

E: Yes.  I live in Kreuzberg.  I’m in my PJs, at home, wearing slippers

H: Nice.  I’m wearing sweatpants too, but even when I go outside I’m in sweatpants most of the time, so this is not explicitly chill. -  So I always ask „what’s in your bag?“, now you’re at home, but maybe you still have a bag lying around and can tell us what’s inside?

E: Yes, so I saved my belt bag (note: yes I know there are different words for this kind of bag, let’s go with this one :D) and haven’t touched it so I can authentically unpack it (love how prepared Eren was for this interview haha!), so in my bag -it’s a Nike belt bag that I’ve had for many many years, and it’s actually really battered, you can’t see it sadly because it’s a podcast...um, so I have an umbrella because it rained yesterday, my vaccination pass because I went to the vaccination centre a week ago and I’m too lazy to unpack these things, wallet, a few essentials..scissors, longpapes, (unintelligable), a lighter, a clipper, and a powerbank which (holds power) up to seven days just in case I ever get kidnapped or something-

H: Always good to at least have battery then

E: Yeah, my phone always dies, I have a shitty phone where 100% (battery) is actually 50 by now? So I always need this.  And a book.

H: Cool.  What are you reading at the moment?

E: Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, it’s good.

H: Ok, so actual classic literature

E: Yeah man (laughs)

H: Are you something of a nerdy reader....I mean...you’re 18, right?

E: Uh-huh

H: When I was 18 I had a phase too where I wanted to read all world literature classics and today I read...maybe not books that will never count as classics, but they’re not white/male enough to be seen as that.  But I’ve actually never read Siddartha.

E: At the moment I’m reading a lot about spirituality and religion because I want to educate myself in that field right now, but other than that (I read) a lot of theory; I have very little knowledge when it comes to novels/literature in general, there are only a few that I can nerd off about; I can show off a lot of knowledge about Franz Kafka but that’s so unnecessary because who cares about Franz Kafka

H:  I do!

Eren:  (laughs) Yeah...I thought, Hesse, Siddhartha, spirituality, religion - that’s the way  

H:  Yeah, sweet. – (Let’s talk about) emotional baggage, what are you dragging along with you right now?

E: Um...there are a lot of changes in my life right now, lots of upheaval.  I don’t know....I feel like there’s a lot coming towards me and I’m being confronted with a lot. I mean, I am 18 and at the end of this year, not sure when this podcast will be released, but today is the 26th of May  – is it ok if I mention that? (H: hmm) – ok (laughs), and at the end of this year or beginning of next year I will move out (from home) if I can, and there are a few projects, so I’m very excited but also a bit anxious because it’s a lot of responsibility.  But I’m stoked and it’s awesome knowing I can do what I like and have fun with it too.

H:  Yeah this is coming of age time for you

Eren:  Yeah (laughs), what am I supposed to do??

H: No it wasn’t meant in a judgemental way, I’ve just realized you’re by far the youngest person I’ve had on my podcast and obviously carry different baggage, that many of us have already lived through.  There can always be changes in life. Do you deal well with changes?

E: I don’t think so.  I think I have an idea of how I deal with things and how I should deal with problems so I can make my peace with stress factors.  But also....for a very very long time I’ve had this feeling of „being old“, so when I was younger I thought Oh no I don’t want to be young, I want to be grown up and be allowed to do what I want.  So what should have been my coming of age moment in 2020, having my 18th birthday and partying – and then came corona, which created a personal backlash.  But I tried living (all of) that after the restrictions (were lifted).

H: When is your birthday? Did you have two lockdown birthdays or is there a chance that you can properly celebrate your next (birthday)?

E: I had one lockdown birthday, last year in September, September 8, virgo...

H:  You’re a Virgo?

E: Yeah. What are you?

H:  Scorpio

E:  Ewwww, oh my God!  

H: Okayyy

E:  That’s a lot of minus points!

H: Hey but, everyone knows I’m Scorpio, that’s general knowledge (E: I didn’t know that!), because I mention it the whole time.

E: I know this is like low-key space racism (lol) but I’ve got something against Scorpio and Gemini, my first bully...it wasn’t a bully per se, but at school there was someone who was Scorpio and he was SUCH a Scorpio..., no, but, sorry! (laughs)

H:  All good. Let’s move on from space racism as you called it (Eren laughs) to nicer things, your „It-bag“, who or what are you celebrating right now?

E: I’ve noticed I’ve become a total summer child/person, I thought for a long time that I love winter quite a bit.  Because when I was in like, elementary school or generally when I was younger, I mean I’m 18, I’m still pretty young, but when I was younger I always used to be at home, used to draw, I was never into football or sports, which was why I sat on the sidelines, drawing, and my mom used to buy me canvas and acrylic paint, so I just did, you know, my stuff.  But since last year I’ve realized that vitamin D is really nice, it exhilarates me, I go outside only because of the sun.  Not sure if this counts, weather (as an it-bag item), not an object or person.

H:  No, celebrating summer is allowed, especially since we’ve been waiting for summer for so long and have had a “lovely” weather mixture of hail, rain and sun at the end of May, like yesterday.

E: Yeah, yes.  I’m also excited for lots of projects right now, I’m excited for Druck, the last two seasons are out, take a look (he addresses the viewers; H misunderstands and thinks Eren is talking about new seasons, but they meant season 5 and 6).  I’m also working on a youth project right now, Zank, which is quite nice, and is being released on Friday.  It’s on YouTube and we tackle topics like political education, future, education, sustainability, critical information. I’m writing and directing too (H:  Cool!).  We’re trying to mobilize people for the general election, while trying to find a more social and economic way where Gen Z, to which I belong to as well I guess, are allowed to take part in the discussion as well.

H: It’s your first general election too.

E:  Yes, yes.

H:  How does that feel?

E:  Nice! It’s amazing to know that you can have an impact and to have a voice that counts, (and) I’ve also waited a long time to be allowed to vote and right now I’m reading a lot and look where my values are presented the most.

I just wanted to ask what are the chances of ANR theory coming true?? I mean the way this story is heading I am not sure if alliance is actually going to pull it off. .so how do you think it's going to end?? and I think Final panel is going to be historia's child because if not why would isyama even put this plot?? and everything is coincidentally happening at the same time so I am not sure if it's grisha and Eren ( I am hoping it to be them tho)

Hi anon!

Well that PV was and is still a big deal in the fandom...This answer will be very long and I’m sorry for that... :( But it’s because AnR theory is related to a discourse that is more complex that changes the whole meaning of the story and what’s happening now.

I had a thread on Twitter I made a while ago to offer my perspective about this video (I was annoyed so it might be a hard reading... I have less patience on Twitter). Actually... my conclusion was that there aren’t compelling hints in the PV about Eren having a child nor surviving this. I do believe it’s full of spoilers, just not that everything is meant to come true as the theory says.

I’m talking now from my own intuition... so... I might be wrong ofc:

The rumbling will be stopped. The question is whether all the members of the alliance will survive or not.

1. Eren never said he is unstoppable. He said he won’t stop until the end because the only people who know the truth are those who keep moving towards the future. This attitude doesn’t mean he will be successful since he doesn’t know everything about the future and it doesn’t seem that he wants to win like a traditional villain. And even things that were supossed to be unstoppable were stopped. For example, Ymir when Zeke gave her his command. Eren stopped her with compassion (just let us leave aside the way he did it in the end. He was still the only one who responded her call, then he messed up things). I expect him to be stopped in the right time like how it happened with Ymir.

2. Isayama is almost impossible to understand when it comes to his interviews. The kind of ending he will do is still a mystery. He said once he wanted to write an ending like in MuvLuv, then like in the Mist and the last time he talked about Guardians of the Galaxy II and that he was shifting the feeling of his ending. But recently he gave details about it and said he would be doing the ending he planned since the beginning. So he isn’t helping us to know what kind of feeling he will be heading to. But from the endings he ever mentioned: (you can skip this)

a. an ending like in MuvLuv Alternative: everyone dies but the mission is accomplished and humanity has a future to keep working for. Just the male mc survives who it’s not related to Eren but to Mikasa. Another character survives that has some similarities with Armin.

b. an ending like in the Mist: everyone dies because the mc took the wrong choice and if he hadn’t chosen it, everyone would have been well. A nihilistic ending.

c. an ending like in Guardians of the Galaxy II, just one person dies but it’s actually a sacrifice. It’s a hopeful ending and they managed to destroy the enemy and save the universe. Let’s say the villain was a kind of paths? It would mean the the end goal is to break paths.

d. an ending like the Watchmen. A kind of Code Geass Ending (that is actually happening because the world is starting to let go of hatred)They accomplished the mission but in the end there is a plot twist and every single sacrifice turned out to be for nothing. Another nihilistic ending.

e. an ending like in Ellysium: the mc that was about to die and tries to reach his own benefit changes his mind and helps his childhood friend/lover and her daughter to become citizens of a kind of paradise where (only rich) people could live a happy life. He fullfiled the promise he made to her about taking her to Ellysium and have a better life when they were children. He dies a hero having changed the unfair system. He dies also remembering the voice of the nun that raised him to be proud of his origin in the Earth. (<-- I go for this kind of feeling mixed with the GGII and Watchmen!)

From my perspective... It’s dull to expect for an ending where hope isn’t there. It would be wrong for the manga to end with the epilogue “every sacrifice was for nothing” like in Watchmen or in the Mist. Even the Uprising has an emotive message there that it’s still promising a twist. Thank God he is not Kafka.

About the baby... well. I don’t expect Eren to be the father at all. Plotwise, there is no need for it. The connection between his plan and the pregnancy is based just on Historia’s safety and...he isn’t the only person who conveniently cared for her well being throughout the story. Even if you see their conversation... he never said to her something related to her as individual but as a royal: “I can’t let you keep with this system and condemn more children to be raised as livestock” (almost in the same way Krüger cared for Dina). The baby was a step for her to be free from the first king’s command. In the end, the baby will probably play a major role in the outcome but it can be explained through Ymir’s curse as I wrote in this post. Whether Eren dies and pass down the power to the baby or not... I don’t know. The baby might be the only way to join every part of Ymir’s soul... I thought about it too.

If Eren will succeed and go back to his wife and child...? There is no hint of that and no logic in such an outcome. The only possible way for that is that he held romantic feelings for Historia and it doesn’t seem to be the case.

If I see some members of the alliance dying? Yes. Probably... meant as the last sacrifices for this change of era. Because that’s what Eren is doing even if he isn’t willingly trying to kill them, he is just letting things happen, gambling the future because he either thinks he can’t change it or because he just lets the world decide its future: “It’s all still ahead of us.” (->as if he couldn’t control things). 

Eren being the father is something a part of the fandom interprets in AnR because they are willingly wanting Eren to succeed, Historia to be his partner and (here comes why this isn’t coherent with the truth of Eren and Historia’s roles:) Eren being a kind of king that ends up fullfiling the wishes of the first King.... of exterminating everyone that isn’t part of their race....? to perpetuate a world ruled by titans when Eren wants the opposite (to end the cycle that started with Ymir’s story)? I can’t see it. They started the theory imposing on the video their own expectations more than to think about what kind of meaning would be coherent with the 100% of the story that never actually changed. Betrayals or not, we are still carrying the sacrifices made since Krüger having to give them meaning. That's why I say also that those sacrifices have to be paid. But not for Eren's secret love story.

About the last panel... I think it’s very possible that is Grisha. Since Eren can’t define his own concept of freedom and the story is pointing out this misconception and agency in this plot, where he was given (?) the role of a devil and accepted it... Considering also his duality and the contrast between his own life raised as a free child and Ymir’s life raised as a slave??? The last panel is about Eren and his own truth 80% sure (it also resembles Ellysium’s ending). And Historia’s child isn’t the only baby anymore.That’s something to consider too.

Summary:

chances that Eren survives to go to Historia and their baby: 0,1%

chances that some more of the alliance die: 99%

chances that Eren survives after this: 20%

what do you personally dislike about Slott's ASM? also do you know how he has been the main writer for so long? It feels like marvel should have switched it up

This turned out so long, sorry, anon.

I don’t know the circumstances that have led to Slott’s extremely long run on Amazing Spider-Man, but I do feel it’s long past time to switch it up for a number of reasons, and frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t chose Legacy as the perfect time to bring in a new writer. I’ve got two bones to pick with Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man, and one is a couple of personal experiences I’ve had that centered around Superior Spider-Man (importantly, they’re both scenes involving the run’s treatment of women) and then just a general note on why his Peter Parker voice doesn’t work for me, personally. I have liked other comics by Slott, for the record.

The personal experiences first:

I’ve witnessed Slott harass a friend of mine on social media over a comment on a frankly awful panel in Superior Spider-Man, saying that they shouldn’t criticize Otto’s actions because he was “on a journey.” This kind of behavior is apparently not an isolated incident where he’s involved, but I should note that my friend was at the time very young (I can’t remember if they were 18, but quite possibly they were younger). I believe it was made obvious to him at one point that he was arguing with a teenager, but I can’t recall for sure. I do know they did not tag him in their criticism. But most importantly, this is the panel they were discussing:

For those unaware, Superior Spider-Man was a storyline where Doctor Octopus bodyjacked Peter and intended to live his life as Peter and as Spider-Man. Nobody knew that Peter had been replaced. 

Otto’s thought boxes are positioned over Mary Jane’s dialogue, effectively silencing her, and not only is HIS gaze clearly fixed on her breasts, but the reader is essentially forced to stare at them, too. I don’t know how the average man feels looking at this panel, but I can say, as a woman, it 100% feels like the comic is creepily staring at my boobs and I’m not cool with that. This is not a fun cheesecake page, embracing Mary Jane as a confident, sexually attractive woman – it’s treating her like a piece of meat. If this was intended to be funny, I’m sorry, but the joke is bad. Even if we were to say Otto was “on a journey” to become a better person and that his behavior in the first issue is not indicative of who he’ll become so he shouldn’t be judged on it – which, currently, he’s in a Peter clone body, being all sad because his Parker Industries coup failed and the woman he lied to and seduced using Peter’s identity doesn’t want to date him, so I guess the last stop on the train was Disgusting Man Valley – it’s still a page where a man infiltrates a woman’s private life using the body of one of the closest people to her and then ignores her voice to stare at her breasts. (Make no mistake: Otto was explicitly and aggressively trying to trick her into bed using Peter’s identity. Later, when he realized he could access Peter’s memories, he replayed Peter’s sexual encounters with Mary Jane. I don’t like any stop on this journey, guys.)

The “journey”, I suspect, was meant to refer to Ock’s growing feelings towards Anna Maria Marconi, but that just highlights another set of problems I have: Mary Jane, a beautiful model turned entrepreneur, is ultimately deemed by Otto as “unacceptable” for someone of Peter’s intellect, and cast aside in favor Anna Maria, who works in STEM, can cook like an Italian grandmother, and who is pretty but not conventionally desirable. It would be one thing for the character to do this, but Slott did once say that Otto was better at appreciating “real beauty” than Peter, and that Peter’s love for Mary Jane was “anti-Marvel”, because Mary Jane’s “superficially beautiful”, implying that she lacks inner beauty and ignoring the canon fact that Mary Jane’s moral center has always been stronger than Peter’s. This disregard for Mary Jane solely because she’s pretty continues in a scene where Mary Jane gets all dressed up and goes to meet a new guy she’s interested in, only to get pushed into the mud before he sees her. While humor via humiliation is common in Slott’s Spider-Man, I don’t really think I need to elaborate on why a scene all about taking a woman who is confident in her appearance and sexuality down a peg leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I really dislike how often Mary Jane is disregarded by fans because she’s “a shallow male fantasy” (please read comics) so to say that Peter loving her is anti-Marvel is just, like, no.

(It’s also out of character for Mary Jane not to realize Peter’s not Peter, considering she outfoxed (and then bludgeoned) the Chameleon and can pick Peter out from among his clones:

but for the sake of Superior’s deceit, I can let this go. The Superior Spider-Man scene where she sits in a burning building waiting for Spider-Man to come save her, The Most Out Of Character Mary Jane Scene Of All Time, I cannot.)

So there’s just, generally, the treatment of Mary Jane in Superior Spider-Man, as well as his reaction to a criticism of it. Then there’s an encounter with a male Spider-Man fan I had which, while this isn’t a direct criticism of Slott’s work, I do think it ties into the way women are treated in it, especially within the body of Superior Spider-Man.

So I used to cosplay, and one time I went to a big outdoor shoot with a bunch of friends and friends’ friends and some photographers, etc, and afterwards we all crowded into a big diner booth together, Jersey style, and this guy I don’t know starts chatting me up. (I guess he missed the memo about superficial beauty.) And it’s a cosplay thing, so like, we’re all nerds, and somehow we start talking about Spider-Man. And this guy rushes to tell me he is loving Superior Spider-Man. Do you know what he just can’t wait to tell me he loved about Superior Spider-Man? He loves that Doc Ock punched Felicia Hardy in the face. “That was awesome,” he told me, referring to a scene where Felicia comes across Spider-Man and, not knowing it’s Ock in there, initiates some playful banter, which he responds to by punching her in the face hard enough to knock a tooth out. Because he’s the Superior Spider-Man! And obviously that’s ~superior~ to what “shallow” Peter would have done, which was most likely engage in consensual sex with Felicia, because they’re both adults who enjoy having sex with each other. Did Dan Slott hold a gun to that guy’s head and make him tell me how awesome and funny it is when men violently assault women in fiction? No, but he did write a scene that it’s possible to interpret as glorifying said assault. At the very least, it does not condemn it.

Dating tip, guys: when talking to a girl for the first time, please don’t tell her how cool and funny you think violence against women is. (Actually, if you find it cool and funny, please be upfront about that, so she can get out of there and never talk to you again.)

Ugh. You guys. I do not like how this title treats women. I don’t like how other Slott titles treat women, although they’re less egregious about it, because at least when Peter Parker is in control of his body and the title you’re forced as a writer to deal with the fact that, while Peter canonically is real enthusiastic about sex with women, the character does actually like, respect women as human beings. Slott has also fridged several important Spider-Man women, notably both Dr. Ashley Kafka and Marla Jameson – both professional women. I love Cindy Moon and I love what other writers have done with the concept of someone who spent ten years locked away in a bunker, but I’m not actually sure Cindy’s introduction needed to be about a woman who was locked in a box since she was a teenager, you feel me?

My issues with Slott’s Peter characterization are entirely a matter of personal taste. I’ve already mentioned that I don’t love humor via embarrassment or humiliation, but I really, really don’t like it. And Slott uses it a lot – his conception of Spider-Man as a funny superhero involves Peter being the butt of a lot of jokes, instead of Peter just… being funny. I also find that his Peter lacks an edge. This is also my problem with Bendis’ Peter, though I feel Bendis nails the rhythm of Peter’s banter better than Slott does, and his dialogue-heavy writing is a good fit. Also, he knows Peter’s Jewish. But like, for instance, you have an iteration of Peter who was only ever written by Bendis in Ultimate Peter! And he’s a good boy! He is! I care about him so much less than 616 Peter. This is related to my dissatisfaction with Homecoming, where he was completely toothless and the narrative went out of its way to point out how NOT scary he was. I’m sorry, but a teenage boy who can punch through concrete no big deal is actually always going to be at least a little scary – instead of rejecting that fact, I’d rather explore how Peter makes himself gentle as he grows up, and how he struggles to be as good and as moral as Spider-Man is, and when he leans into that threatening nature. I want that struggle, and that relationship with violence, throw in some Spider-Man as a predatory animal metaphors okay at this point I should note that the modern Spider-Man writer whose voice for him I like the very best is J. Michael Straczynski’s. You can see what I’m talking about in this scene, for example:

He’s completely gentle with Mary Jane – but when Tony gets in his way to keep him from going after a paparazzo (Tony wouldn’t know this, but Peter once threatened to rip a sleazy photographer’s head off after he called Mary Jane cheap, so y’know, trying to get him to calm down is reasonable), Peter’s reaction is hostile – threatening to forcibly move him, the clenched fists, etc. (One of my big Peter characterization rules is you can’t write how he interacts with other people the same as the way he interacts with his family.) He also just tossed Wolverine out a window, so.

“You were chosen for your rage” ooooh Mr. Stracyznski, tell me more. This sounds like I am joking no 10000% give me more of Peter shirtless and beating up the Kingpin. His freaking murder polo:

Basically, as a reader, I appreciate the depths of Peter’s kindness best when they aren’t necessarily first nature for him. Slott’s Peter doesn’t have that same edge to him. He’s not reining himself in. (There was a Norman vs Peter fist fight and I WAS NOT INTO IT, which should be impossible.)
