hi, i'm here to ask you about your citrus ranking.
what's your top five atm?
and separately, thoughts on grapefruit?
I am laying a vitamin C supplement in front of you like it's a tip. Keep the change, queen.
Tangelo is ALWAYS in the top 5 but because the season is LATE and they haven't appeared in stores yet they aren't sharing in top spot glory with Yuzu and a good Lime right now. Then comes Lemon, eureka or lisbon varieties please them meyers are EMPTY of acid, and seed extraction is a small price to pay for such stimulating additions to the kitchen.
Taking out the last top 5 spot is the baby kumquat. I did think about finger lime but it's been so long since I've had one fresh I can't remember how much I loved it compared to the others. Kumquats are when you want more zing from your mandarin, but like pistachios require you to be quite happy with multiple unshellings to be satisfied. I have yet to find a regular supply since I moved from Melbourne where my aunt has a tree.
Tangelo are what you wish a mandarin was in that the most mid tangelo is far better than a mid mandarin. They are ALWAYS juicy. And also just that bit bigger on average so feel like a good snack. Perfect size, easily segmented to share with friends (especially after they say 'that's a big mandarin' and you have to correct them immediately and then share the joys of tangelo supremacy), always juicy, and about as seedy and a mando.
Grapefruit. Look, I WANT to like them, Ive tried and tried. But the bitterness is too powerful, and too likely. The rate of negative reinforcement while snacking on a grapefruit is too high for me to continue wanting to eat a grapefruit. Processed juice is perfectly acceptable as an ingredient in cocktails or desserts or whatever. I think I might be on the sensitive side when it comes to taste and my bitterness threshold is incredibly low for someone who loves food that tastes so much all the time. So they don't go in the sin bin, I respect their grind, but we just aren't friends.
#when i get my hands on a tangelo you WILL read about it#its like cows coming to summer pastures for me#i wait and wait for the first boxes to roll into stores every winter#and then begins Tangelo Time#which means taking one to work every day and eating in in the winter sun at 3pm or so when my brain starts to die#this and work lunches until sept/oct is the busiest time for a tangelo missionary

Meeting Harry Styles
Summary: After actress Mia Tangelo meets Harry Styles at a One Direction concert, he surprises her by showing up at her film premiere.
Warnings: None. I still ask that you be at least 18 to read my fics though.
Word Count: 3820
A/N: A cute one shot from 2016. Harry x OC. I believe this was a request where the woman was famous too. Obviously, this is 1D Harry.
My sister had taken me to a One Direction concert. Neither of us were particularly huge fans, but I'll admit I'd been known to sing along to a few of their songs on the radio. When she originally told me about the tickets I raised a brow, but ended up agreeing to join her, thinking it would be a fun night out with my sis. I'd recently wrapped up filming for my latest movie, and between that and press and promo for my previous film that was opening in a few weeks, we rarely got to spend time with each other anymore.
Halfway through the show, and a few beers later, Nora let the cat out of the bag. I wasn't sure if it was the alcohol or the sheer excitement from the crowd, but with her arm looped through mine she informed me she'd always had a crush on Niall. I giggled at her as I leaned my head on her shoulder, watching the four boys on stage. My eyes, however, were not focused on the Irish one, but rather the tall, long-haired one in jeans so tight you could practically see-
"Mia!" Nora shouted in my ear, interrupting my dirty thoughts. "Did you see that? Oh my God, he's so cute! That smile!"
"Yeah," I grinned. I knew she was referring to Niall, but I wasn't.
I continued to stare at him in awe as he pranced around the stage, getting the crowd more riled up with each "make some noise!" and flip of his hair. A couple of times he came our way, and I could swear we made eye contact as he gave his dimpled grin and a thumbs up.
Harry Styles. I knew the name. I knew who he was. I guess for some reason I'd never really paid attention. One Direction was just a pop band with a handful of catchy tunes. But standing there in the audience, watching him in his element, I realized what Harry Styles really was - a rockstar.
When the concert was over and I was nearly deaf from all the screaming (okay, I might've contributed to it some), Nora and I grabbed our things to hurry toward the exit. In the early days, my sister and I would stay at the venue long after the show was through, and the seats had cleared out. But now that I had an acting career, I got recognized a lot. Not that I minded it, but sometimes fans would crowd around for hours, and I'd finally have to tell them I needed to leave. I still wasn't very good at turning people down and it made me feel bad, so it was just easier to leave the premises early.
As we made our way down the aisle, I caught the glimpse of camera phones snapping photos. Of course, I knew phones had been out during the entire concert, but I also knew people were getting pics of me. I even heard my name shouted a few times. Deciding to hold up a hand to wave, I felt Nora poke me in the back.
"What?" I turned to ask her.
"That guy's calling for you," she pointed ahead of me.
Twirling back around, I saw whom she was talking about, nearly bumping into him. He wore a white t-shirt that simply said STAFF on the front.
"Mia Tangelo?"
"Yes," I nodded.
"Harry Styles wants to meet you," he stated with a small smile.
My eyes about popped out of their sockets as I stared at the guy. "Are you serious?"
"Yes, ma'am," he replied.
My jaw dropped slightly as I eyed Nora who was practically up against my back, her arm still holding on to mine.
"Oh my God!" she squealed.
"You wanna come with me?" I heard the man ask.
"Oh, sure," I muttered. "Yeah."
Nora and I followed him through a maze that led us to a backstage area. I wasn't even sure how we got there without running into other bodies, but before we knew it, we were standing in front of a doorway.
"Just have a seat in there," the guy instructed, gesturing toward a sofa inside the room.
"Thank you," I said pleasantly.
I could feel Nora's nerves radiating off of her as she sat next to me. I chuckled low, grabbing her hand and giving it a squeeze.
"Honey, calm down," I whispered. "I've introduced you to my co-stars before."
"I know, and I was nervous as hell every time," she spewed.
I smiled. "They're just people, like you and me."
Nora raised a brow. "Like you, maybe, but not like me. Not even close."
"I hate when you talk like that," I scoffed.
"Hey, I wasn't just in a movie with Le-"
"Hello," I heard a British accent say. I lifted my gaze to the doorway where a very tall and handsome Harry Styles stood.
"Hi!" I greeted, rising from my seat. "Mia Tangelo, nice to you meet you." I extended my hand and Harry took it. A smile spread across his face, revealing his dimples again.
"Lovely to meet you, too, Mia. I'm a massive fan," he remarked, shaking my hand before leaning forward and kissing the air on either side of my face.
"Of mine? Really?"
"Yeah," he nodded, his gaze not wavering from mine. It was then that I noticed he still had a hold of my hand, and I had yet to acknowledge my sister who had stood up from the couch.
"Um," I cleared my throat. "Harry, this is my sister, Nora."
Nora, who had just been a ball of nerves less than a minute ago, suddenly found her courage and shook Harry's hand, giving him the lowdown on herself and how much she enjoyed the concert and wished she had seen them years ago. Harry was a gentleman, taking in every word. I took the opportunity to take in his beauty, my eyes traveling down his slim physique to his boots. He was even better looking up close, his thin t-shirt revealing a few tattoos underneath. I liked the way he kept combing his long fingers through his hair, and how full his lips were.
"Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the show," I heard Harry say.
I blinked just as I caught a glimpse of someone else walking in the room. I nudged Nora with my elbow. She let out a slight yelp when she saw him.
"Hello," I held out my hand when Niall walked up to me. "I'm Mia."
"Yeah, I thought I saw you in the audience," he nodded, shaking my hand. "Thanks for comin'!"
"You bet," I grinned, turning to Nora. "It was her idea."
As soon as I introduced Niall to my sister, she returned to her chatty self. I stood back and watched her in action for a bit until I felt those green eyes on me. Yes, I'd already noticed they were green.
"So, what did you think?" he asked.
"Sorry?" I turned to face him.
"The show," said Harry. "What did you think?"
"Oh," I mouthed, "I loved it."
I quickly found myself biting my lip like I did when I was nervous. I never told Nora, but I still got nervous from time to time. And the way Harry's eyes were burning into mine didn't help. Fortunately, I had learned how not to look away from someone when they spoke to me. It kind of came with the professionalism and red-carpet etiquette. And from the looks of it, Harry had been schooled as well.
"I'm glad," he grinned. "It's actually funny that you're here. I was just watching one of your films on the bus this weekend."
"Really?" I lifted my brows. "Am I allowed to ask which one?"
"Surrender," he replied a little sheepishly, his accent omitting the R at the end.
I felt the color rise to my cheeks though I tried my best to play it off. Surrender had been one of my earlier films, only my second major motion picture and my very first love scene. Although millions of people had seen it by now, and I'd done several movies since, the knowledge that Harry had watched me naked on the screen made me feel something I hadn't been prepared for.
I cleared my throat. "And did you like it?"
The corner of Harry's mouth curled up on one side, that damn dimple making its appearance once again. "Yeah...I did."
I pressed my lips together and nodded.
"Although, I think In the Dark Daylight may be my favorite," he remarked.
"Oh?" I widened my eyes. Although In the Dark Daylight seemed to have a bit of a cult following, it had been met with mixed reviews. Still, it had been my favorite to shoot thus far. "You know, we just finished filming the sequel."
"I heard about that!" Harry nodded, lightly gesturing to me. "And I hear there's a new film coming out soon?"
"Oh, yeah," I swallowed. "Yes. On the fourth."
"What's that one called again?"
"No Man's Land," I replied. "We're um...I'm really excited about it."
"Me too," Harry commented. "Can't wait to see it."
Despite my nerves, Harry's gaze certainly had a pull on me. I hadn't even noticed Liam and Louis had entered the room until Nora's laugh rang in my ears and I looked over to see them chatting with her. After introducing myself, the guy from earlier with the STAFF shirt peaked his head inside, announcing "twenty minutes". I wasn't exactly sure what that meant, but I figured it had something to do with them getting on their buses and heading to the next city, so we quickly said our goodbyes.
"Really lovely to meet you, Mia," Harry said softly after the other three boys had left the room, his hand gently touching my arm.
"You too, Harry," I beamed, allowing the heat from his skin to warm mine.
"Thanks so much for coming out to support us. I hope I get to return the favor someday."
I smiled wider. "You bet."
Harry and Nora said farewell and I followed her out into the hall, giving Harry one final glance and a wave, catching his dimpled smile one last time.
I could see the cameras flashing as soon as the car pulled up. Adjusting my dress and taking a deep breath, I waited for the driver to open the door. I was never going to get used to this, no matter how many movies I made.
I stopped along the red carpet to wave and do short interviews, my picture being taken every step of the way. I smiled as much as was necessary, but once I was indoors, I felt my body relax. I met up with several of the cast and crew for No Man's Land, taking more photos and sharing a couple glasses of wine that somehow had arrived in my hand. I chatted with a few other celebrities that I'd met before, as well as some that I hadn't. By the time I was seated for the screening, all nervousness was gone.
The audience applauded enthusiastically when the film was over, and I followed the rest of the cast down the aisle, making our way back to the crowd. Several of my peers congratulated me, telling me it was a stellar performance. I took their compliments graciously, thanking them for coming. I'd just turned from one conversation, prepared for another when I felt a hand on the small of my back.
"You were wonderful, Mia," a low voice sang in my ear.
I jerked around to see Harry, his tall, slim physique hovering over me. He looked amazing in a black suit and shirt, minus a tie so as to give a peek of his tattooed chest in typical Harry Styles fashion.
"Harry!" I whisper-shouted, grabbing his forearm before I could catch myself. "I didn't know you were coming!"
"Told you I was gonna return the favor," he said, covering my hand with his before leaning in to kiss my cheek. Unlike the air kisses he'd given before, his lips actually pressed against my skin.
"I-I'm so glad!" I exclaimed shakily. "It's good to see you."
"You too," he grinned. "You look stunning."
"Thank you," I said.
Or at least I thought I said it. Even in the dimly lit room, I was suddenly lost in his eyes, the pull even stronger than I'd remembered. I was also suddenly aware of what I was wearing. From the moment I'd stepped out of the car and the first camera flashed, it was like I was no longer in my body. I was on autopilot, knowing where I needed to stand, what I needed to say. But now standing next to Harry, his eyes on me, I was finally back inside my own skin, aware of all my senses.
My nervous habit of lip biting returned as I reached down to tug on the lace hem of my short dress, catching Harry's gaze as it travelled down my body.
"So, um..." I swallowed hard. "So you liked the movie?"
"Yeah," he eyes shifted back to mine. "I might've actually liked it more than In the Dark Daylight."
"Really?" I asked, surprised.
Harry shrugged, giving a cheeky smirk. "Alright, maybe about the same."
I chuckled, feeling a bit of tension release. "That's still pretty good. I'll take it."
Harry and I chatted for a while about the film, and a couple of my others, though I was a bit grateful he didn't mention Surrender again. Some of my co-stars joined us and I introduced them to Harry, and even some people who knew him but not me came up to us. It turned out to be a really fun evening, and the more I was around Harry, the funnier and more charming he seemed to be, true to his reputation.
After more cocktails, I excused myself to the ladies' room. I hadn't expected Harry to wait for me, so when I returned and was greeted by another fellow actor, I stopped to talk to him. Halfway through the conversation, however, I caught a glimpse of Harry out of the corner of my eye. He gave me a smile which I returned before quickly averting my attention back to the man in front of me. As he droned on about something I knew nothing about, I couldn't help but keep the grin on my face as I saw Harry coming towards me.
"Hello," he said cheerfully. My stomach flipped when I felt his arm slide around my waist.
"Hi," I licked my lips. I hastily introduced him to the other actor.
"Do you mind if I steal her for a moment?" Harry asked.
The other man shook his head, cordially turning around to start a conversation with someone else. I looked up at Harry, a tiny giggle escaping my throat.
"Thanks."
"What for?"
"For saving me," I chuckled.
"Oh, I wasn't really trying to," he grinned. "Just wanted to be with you."
My face softened as I continued to stare at him. "Oh," I breathed.
"It's difficult to know the most beautiful woman in the room is over here, when I'm over there," he gestured with his head to the area he'd been standing before. It was then that I noticed his arm had loosened only slightly from around my waist, his hand now on the small of my back.
"Oh," I said again, sounding like a broken record. I blinked, my lips curling into a smile. Harry mimicked it, sending shivers down my spine. The way his eyes danced, I could swear he was about to kiss me, but I figured he thought it best not to in our current setting.
"Do you wanna get out of here?" he finally asked after staring at each other for a moment or two. "Or...do you have to stay?"
"No," I shook my head. "I mean, no, I don't...have to stay."
Harry's smile grew as he turned slightly and nudged me with his hand, leading me toward to the exit. When we made it outside, several cars were lined up to take various guests home (or wherever else they wished to go) as they climbed in. Some people had stopped to chat which made me feel more at ease, seeing as I'd just walked out of the theater with Harry. I didn't want our exit - or whatever this was - to appear too obvious.
"Do you wanna take yours or mine?" I heard him ask softly. I noticed then that he had his phone in his hand, no doubt ready to cancel his car if need be.
"Um...mine's fine I guess."
Harry nodded, typed something on his phone and shoved it back in his pocket. I didn't even need to call for my car. It was already pulling up to the curb by the time we stepped up to it, as if by magic. The driver opened the door and I slid into the back seat, Harry following me.
We were both silent for a couple minutes and I took the opportunity to take a few deep breaths and second guess what we might be doing. The intoxicating aroma of Harry's cologne weakened my senses, and I felt my mouth go dry.
"So, I suppose now," said Harry, interrupting my thoughts, "before we get to your place, or wherever it is we're going, I should probably confess something."
I blinked once, my eyes wide as I looked over at him. "What's that?"
Harry smiled his dazzling smile before looking down at his hands and back up at me. "I've fancied you for a while now."
I returned his smile. "You have?"
"Yeah. That wasn't the first time I'd watched Surrender."
My entire body was suddenly on fire from within, like someone had lit a match and tossed it inside. I bit my bottom lip, though this time not from nerves. Harry leaned over and brought his hand to my cheek, his eyes focused on my mouth, his thumb urging my teeth to release my lip. When it popped out, he slid his thumb across it before tilting his head and pressing his mouth to mine.
He kissed me softly and gently, his fingers tickling my cheek. Then his hand slid down to my neck as he pulled me closer, deepening the kiss. He tasted like whiskey and cherries. That mixed with his cologne made my head spin, and I was perfectly fine with it. My left hand had found a resting place against his chest, and my right was somehow holding his in my lap. As I felt the car come to a stop, I pulled away.
"Are we there already?" Harry asked in a raspy voice, his eyes still closed and his mouth mere centimeters from mine.
I giggled lightly. "No. Just a red light."
"Oh," he said, his eyelids fluttering open. I grinned at him for a minute as he stared at me. There was no denying how handsome he was.
When the car began to move again, Harry sat back, his hand still holding on to mine. I looked down at them in my lap and smiled. Then Harry lifted them to his lips, kissing the back of mine.
"I'm glad you came," I muttered.
Harry gazed over at me. "So, confession number two," he said sheepishly, "I wasn't originally invited."
I narrowed my eyes. "What?"
"As they say, I had my people call your people."
I let out a loud cackle. "You did not."
"Yeah I did. I wanted to see you."
"You couldn't have just gotten my number?" I inquired.
"And miss out on surprising you?" Harry quipped.
"Harry Styles!" I teased, shoving his arm.
"Were you surprised?" he asked.
"Very."
"Mission accomplished, then," he smirked.
I watched him in silence until I noticed we were turning into my neighborhood. My stomach flipped at the anticipation, and my palms were sweaty.
"Mia?" I suddenly heard Harry say as I was gazing out the window.
"Yes?"
"I've been thinking about this the whole drive...going back and forth in my head...and maybe it's because I'm sobering up but..." his expression softened as he shifted in his seat to face me. "I don't think we should sleep together tonight."
My face fell. "Oh. Okay." I felt like I was going to throw up.
"Please let me explain," he added. "It's not that I don't want to. I very much want to." He said the last sentence with a nervous chuckle.
"It's fine," I remarked, my jaw set to keep from revealing any real emotion. I felt like an idiot.
"Mia..." Harry sounded, scooting closer to me. He lifted my chin to look at him. I blinked fast, worried that a tear or two might sneak through. "I wanna get to know you more. I really like you. I wanna take you out, on a proper date. I don't want this to just be a hook up."
My eyelids fluttered a few more times as I let his words sink in.
"Really?"
"Yeah," Harry nodded. "Tour's over. I have some time to actually spend with you, get to know you better. Would you like that?"
I felt my cheeks rise as a smile slowly spread across my face. "I'd like that a lot."
"Good," he grinned just as the car pulled up to my house and we were let in the gate.
I quickly gave Harry my number which he programmed in his phone. When the driver opened the door, Harry got out first, holding his hand out for me. As I dug my keys out of my bag, I saw Harry talking to the driver before following me up the sidewalk.
"Wow, I get a gentleman walking me to my door," I commented. "It is like a first date."
"Well, I am a gentleman," remarked Harry.
"Do I get a goodnight kiss too?"
"Are you kidding?"
Harry slid his hands under my ears and kissed me like he had in the car, only with a bit more fervor and spark. I felt light-headed before he even let go, and by the time he did, I could barely stand.
"Are you sure you don't wanna stay?" I whispered.
Harry rested his forehead against mine.
"Next time, love," he breathed, his fingers dragging down my neck. "Promise."
With one last kiss, he turned back to the car. I watched him get in and wave goodbye before I unlocked my front door.
I had just climbed the stairs and was walking into my bedroom when my phone rang in my bag.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Mia, it's Harry," he said. "Would you like to go out with me Saturday night?"
I giggled like a schoolgirl as I sat on my bed and kicked off my shoes. "I'd love to, Harry."
Thank you so much for reading! If you enjoyed, please like, comment, reblog or send me a msg!

The Truths Found On Petram Viridios IV (1/?)
What started out as an idea for a short one shot grew into a multichap that I'm almost done editing. I think 🤔 it'll be either 4 or 5 chapters long depending on how long each chapter will be after I'm done editing. Anyway, I hope you guys will enjoy.
In this fic you learn how easily things can change, but how it effects you isn't always a bad thing.
________________
Chapter 1: The Phenomenon
There was little difference to what was happening around you at the moment. There were no little green men, or yellow submarines, neither were there tangelos, or bags of golden rings, but there was a blue-haired man with plenty of dreams. Still, life was swell; summer was around the corner, and you were reading in the garage just to be near Zeta-7; he was working on his latest piece of tech, and you were distracted by his charming quirks and ticks. If you hadn't known any better, you'd say it was business as usual. Yet, it was because you had been acquainted with Rick that the previous blindspots of your world were made known to you; conscious of the rare events which were going to take place in another quadrant of space.
A phenomenon was going to occur; one which would not happen again for another 1000 years; the blooming of the Milleannos flower. Legends say that those who touch its pollen might live forever, and those who smell its perfume might be cured of all that ails them, but those claims were supposedly unsubstantiated. There was to be a gala to celebrate the occasion; all in attendance were respectable, distinguished guests and because of Rick, you were also invited, but there were rules; strict guidelines which were to be obeyed unless you wished to throw away your life. And although you weren't happy about them, you were willing to abide by them for Rick's sake. However, there were a few things you didn't understand. "Rick, why won't we be allowed to dance together?"
His hands paused their activity, and his body sagged a little; dreading the reminder not because he's informed you already, but because it pained him to remind himself that he couldn't spend a once in a lifetime occasion with you. "B-because according to the laws of Petram Viridios IV, you are assigned a um - a party companion which is determined according to the alignment of your spine, carbon dioxide levels, as well as daily water intake. And due to the variety of guests, everyone must stand at least six feet apart to avoid air poisoning. However, if given an a-air helmet in order to assist with breathing, then I believe that the last rule isn't as severe. It's - there is a-a lot to remember."
Currently, he was piecing together the circuits and connecting the wires which would power his reflective shield. It was going to be worn under his dress shirt and would be undetectable under their scanners; as a precaution of course. "Ricky, you know I barely drink water." You weren't a fan of water, but you enjoyed flavored beverages and if you did drink water, it was always carbonated first. "I mean, I can get past the distance thing, but what am I supposed to do if I'm assigned to someone I don't like, and have to spend hours being bored and jealous that you're next to gorgeous, realistic fembots from Westworld?"
Unlike you, Zeta-7 drank so much water, you wondered how he wasn't rushing to the bathroom every five minutes. The only other people who drank that much water were beauty gurus who wanted to keep their skin in tip-top shape; you could really try harder if you wanted to. Good naturedly, he answered. "Gosh, y-you don't have to worry about that. I know a fembot when I-I see one."
You raised a brow at this, but seeing as he meant it literally, you listened on. "No s-siree, I won't be assigned a party companion because I'm going t-t-to be assisting the king in protecting their sacred relic."
How Rick became designated to assist with such a task was beyond you, but there seemed to be a glimmer of slight pride in the fact that he'd be so lucky and privileged as to be near the legendary flower, as well as to the beings who revered it. He was determined to find out the truth behind its properties, and if his hypothesis proved true, then he had a plan. You enjoyed when he was diverted with schemes; not the kind which was evil in nature, but the ones which could end happily or inconclusively. Anyway, you two were discussing how to go about it all.
The discussion had gaps of pause where he'd need to concentrate on bits of wiring that needed to be soldered or bent. Without distraction, you were more aware that it was humid, especially with the garage door being fully open for proper ventilation; bits of your hair stuck to your face and to the back of your neck despite how you'd try to tie it. As annoying as it was, it did have its draw; every so often, you'd catch Rick staring and you'd feel a thrill for it could be a year or ten years, but his shy tendencies would never stop being endearing; why he felt the need to reign himself when you were cool with him checking you out was something you hoped he'd someday become more comfortable with, but for now you'd simply giggle and wink at him to let him know you knew. He did his best to focus on the task at hand, but it wasn't going as well as he had hoped for it happened more than once that you'd have to hand him a tool he was blindly reaching out for. "You wouldn't happen to know who my party companion is," you inquired, as you were tying your hair up for the umpteenth time. "do you? And if you do, can't you change them?"
Giving you that look which always preceded his speeches of why he couldn't do that random illegal thing, he explained with kindly patience. "I could change th-the records, and assign you to someone I know, but that wouldn't be legal."
"I know."
"However," he brightened as he paused his work to face you fully. "I do have a copy of the guest list. Give me a-a moment to pull it up on my computer. Hmm," he wondered more to himself then out loud. "that's odd."
"What is it?"
Drumming his fingertips on his workbench, he double-checked his calculations, then went over and wrote it all out on a chalkboard to be sure. Tapping the freshly used chalk tip to his chin in thought, leaving a little powder on his face, he nodded when it seemed satisfactory. "According to um - to my calculations, it's possible that it's either the Salamandrian chemist, V'gha Khadaka or the Chordatan Knight, Noathamas."
"Is there a correlation between the two?"
"Other than their similar water intake levels, they both enjoy their privacy. However, I'm a-a little stumped as to how it might be possible to be assigned to them both. None of your occupations are similar, neither is there a species similarity, but I'm sure I'll figure it out before the event."
Great, just great. That sort of information wasn't all that helpful, but you pressed a kiss to his cheek to ease the worry which he had been hiding. You wondered if it was too late to back out, but for the most part you were determined to be there for him, even if it meant odd company. "Alright. Um… is there something I should keep in mind before I go dress shopping?"
A quick glance at your current outfit made him smile. You were wearing an old band tee and jeans with so many patches, that they were more patch then jean. "I-I don't think so. Almost anything is fine. Though, y-you might want to avoid plant-based materials in favor of synthetics just in case."
"Okay, I think I can do that, but don't be surprised if I look like I just walked out of a 1980s prom. I'll have you know that being slightly flammable is a dream of mine."
He chuckled at that and patted your shoulder. "Hohoho, I'm sure it'll be fine. You - you always look pretty in whatever you wear."
"If you mean that I'll be so fine, that I'll light up the room with my razzle-dazzle, then you better watch out. You never know who'll be charmed without my knowing."
Now, there had been little to no weight to your phrasing just now, but he felt differently. Giving your shoulders a squeeze, there was a distant, far off look in his eyes that you could only recall from specific occasions. It was a mix of longing, sadness, and regret, but you couldn't pin it on what exactly. It was as though he were trying to convey by sight that there was something he ought to do, that he ought to say, but as quickly as it had appeared, it left and was replaced by acceptance. He pulled away and returned to his previous task while you used a spare computer to begin the search for the perfect dress. He said it'll be fine, and you certainly hoped so.
____________
Adjustments in gravity made you feel as though you could jump in and out of craters as though you were wearing moon shoes; that is until you stepped onto a ship or station, then you felt as though you had fifty pounds tied to each foot. You were grateful for the terrain stabilizers that Rick placed in your flats a few adventures ago, otherwise, you would've already been worn out.
You two arrived a few minutes apart by way of the designated ship which held a variety of guests. To explain, the ship itself was a marvel and a work of beauty as far as intergalactic travel was concerned; its mechanical parts were held together by a compound whose main ingredient was a type of scarlet amber. Piece by piece, it had been crafted by a mixture of living matter and tech so advanced, that it'd have taken 300 years of Earth-based studies to understand a fraction of how one of its panels could work; probably sooner for someone like Rick.
Your eyes trailed the conduits as you were led through hallways that seemed to spiral and spill into larger hallways with varying temperatures and design and you wondered how it was those conduits crossed over and branched off like veins, but you had no time to find out and didn't feel privileged enough to ask as you were led into a cabin. Multiple voices hushed, but resumed to their usual loudness once you had settled into what appeared to be a loveseat with the coloring and texture of a pumpkin; it was your assigned seating, but it was not as soft as you would have liked.
It wouldn't be till later that you'd find out that Rick had traveled in a cabin on level 4 while you had been on level 2. In your cabin was a being composed of pure energy, with a name not spelled in letters but in frequencies, who was one of the musicians. A few feet away, was V'gha Khaḍaka; he was tall, sure-looking, had smooth, striped skin which glistened, and a tail strong enough to break someone's spine in a blink; the good thing was that he hadn't been trained in combat, but was simply a scientist who enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge. And a few feet away from the Salamandrian chemist was the knight Noathamas; he stood at half your height, but his chest was puffed out in such a way that made him appear larger, while his round amber eyes and curly whiskers gave him a soft, cuddly appearance; you had been warned by Rick that his appearance did not reveal much about his character and to watch out for him.
It was uncommon but not unheard of to be assigned multiple party companies as you had been; you were matched up to both V'gha and Noathamas due to your odd chemical makeup. Who would've thought that drinking a La Croix before leaving home would confuse their scanners? Goodness, you were grateful that it was a quick trip, and when it was time to depart the ship, you were escorted by two guards before you were given a helmet; it was nearly invisible except for its indicator light which was shaped like a flower, and it blended in with your dress; a colorful sequin cocktail dress you found on eBay. Not far from you were both your companions, who gave off the impression that they were your entourage rather than dates for the night. You saw Rick from a distance, and you knew he was trying to play it cool, but his eyes were sparkling with affection, although he knew he was supposed to suppress it due to the strict traditions imposed by the royal family; he looked away as he was escorted by six guards, but part of you wished that he hadn't.
You took a deep breath to calm your giddiness; this wasn't the time to allow your emotions to carry you away and affect the mission which was to get through the evening. V'gha could pick up on your subtle changes in body language, and thanks to a universal translator in your helmet, you could understand him. "From what I understand," he commented with a surprisingly smooth, velvety voice. "he's the smartest man in the universe. Is that true?"
"Maybe," you replied nonchalantly, "but he's more than just a brain. I heard he's a great lover. Not really my type," you lied because Zeta-7 suggested that you keep the details of your relationship with him a secret; again for safety, but you thought boasting up his reputation wouldn't hurt. "though, to each his own."
"Do you know him personally?"
When questions like this were thrown at you, it made you wonder about the curious people who meant it to sound nice, but in actuality wanted to test the waters as to how much can they ask so soon. Glancing at your nails, you feigned disinterest. "I'm not sure if I'm allowed to give out that type of information."
"You two are the only humans here." he stated matter of factly. There were humanoid beings but he was right. "It doesn't take rocket science to figure that much out."
"How would you know," you retorted with an air of certainty. "you're not a rocket scientist."
"You're right, I'm not. However, I do dabble into it from time to time. I'm sure he does too. I can smell the exhaust from here."
Hmm, perhaps this event was going to be more interesting than you thought. You shared a look of understanding with the chemist, and thought that perhaps you wouldn't need to be so wary of him; his charisma gave him a charm you hadn't yet decided if it was welcomed or should be ignored; whether his earlier comment was out of egotism or curiosity. And before you could make a comeback, Noathamas commented. "Shall we find our assigned seating and continue from there?"
"Sounds fine. Why don't you two walk ahead," you suggested with a coolness you didn't know you had. "I'll be sure to follow."
When you were sure that they were far enough, you took out your miniature glass terrarium necklace, which held a shrunken sunflower that had an iridescent shimmer on its petals; the one Rick had given you after a memorable date; it was made to remind you of how he saw you and you were very glad it had gone undetected under the scanners you passed through. And in your mind's eye you could still see the glimmer and shine of his electric blue eyes as he had taken in your appearance this afternoon before you two departed Earth; oh how he had wanted to kiss you and hug you but had refrained from doing so in order to double-check if he had all his supplies. His compliments had been many as he drove into the inky blackness of space, but when he parked at the station which was at the midway point, and you two lined up to board the ship which took you to this strange world, his face became neutral; his job made him good at that. You kissed your lovely necklace, replaced it so that it laid underneath your dress collar, and your heart called out to him in the void which was Petram Viridios IV; hoping you wouldn't have to go the through the evening without seeing your beloved again before you made yourself appear neutral and made sure to stay at least six feet apart from everyone in your midst.

Flame Headcanons
@i-w-p-chan asked me to explain some xover thoughts between Katekyo Hitman Reborn flames & Boku no Hero Academia characters, so buckle up ‘cuz it’s a long post under the read more! Headcanon, ho!
To explain my numbers, I gotta explain a buncha other shit too, lmao.
So basically I got some inspo from micronecro way back when (the post here on my tumblr if you're curious) that Earth Flames & whatnot were all combination Flames. Swamp is Storm+Sun, Forest Sun+Lightning, Mountain Lightning+Rain, Desert Rain+Mist, Glacier Mist+Cloud, & that last mysterious flame being named Geyser for Cloud+Storm.
I also wanted a third part of Flames for the water aspect (Earth is obvs earth, Sky is a combo of fire & air for skies themselves), so I also came up with Ocean Flames & that entire set. The feeling was only reinforced by an offhand comment by nordiamus over on FFN in their Game On xover, really.
So if Sky is the most purely Flame set & Earth is combo, shouldn't Ocean also be some sort of combo? But if the Sky is so common & Earth heard of but not really heard of, then wouldn't Ocean be even more rare?
I eventually settled on a natural 3:4:5 ratio, but to have a ratio I needed to have numbers, so I had to math shit out & also needed to have shorthand symbols so I didn't inevitably confuse myself while making sure they actually showed up in both Notepad & Excel, colors for much the same, & characteristics for the Flames themselves too. Took a long while, but I got everything settled out.
I chose 108 for the point system because it's already a trope, lol. I also made use of Umei-no Mai's Black Sky's headcanon that you actually needed around 5% of each Flame to develop properly, though I had to use it as 6% b/c the math would've become bad math otherwise. This means any singular Flame can only be a value between 6 to 76 out of 108 (6-70%), b/c there’s gotta be at least 6 points (6%) on everything. Here’s a handy chart:
Yellow is where I folded percentages together, red is the tens on the point side, with green the tens on the percent side. A general guideline I use is that you need at least 18% to produce a visible Flame. You can do it with smaller percentages down to 10%, but it requires exceptional control & possibly small reserves (which can also be called depth). (this scenario would also produce a functional sky but it’d be a fairly weak one since it was both not activated as such and not a full state of being for them).
Dying Will Flames of the Sky: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed) (the link has interesting info), type of resolve (HC from Gokurdera being able to light 5 Flames but not all at once); appearance
STORM: #EB1C23 brilliant red, disintegration, ♋ (looks like hurricane cell; I'm aware it's actually the symbol for Cancer), to take down; low-heat smoldering, smokey upcurls & tongues
SKY: #FFA719 vivid gamboge, harmony, at least 10% (11/108) on all, ☰ (this the trigram symbol for heaven you see), to keep/stay; most like fire w/ flares, wisps, & overall more ethereal movement
SUN: #FFC70F amber, activation, ☀, to improve; like starlight in that it’s constant jetting outwards, more a shining than a straight-up fire
LIGHTNING/THUNDER: #23B04B malachite, hardening, ϟ (this is the only lightning-shaped symbol to show up tbh, it's technically the lowercase Greek letter for Q), to defend; electricity w/ small arcs between branches
RAIN: #99D8E8 cerulean, tranquility, ☂, to slow down; pool water with refraction in slow-motion, more round & globular than a fire except it gives off (what it’s user thinks of as ‘relaxing’) heat
MIST: #3F49CC phthalo blue, construction, ♒ (I couldn't find anything that was explicitly 'fog' or whatever, so I had to make do with whatever worked; it's the symbol for Aquarius, though it also symbolizes wind which is the next best, since mist is a groundbound cloud anyways), to confuse; wispy, almost entirely see through, with off center diffusion of color, the palest of the Flames
CLOUD: #A249A3 moderate magenta, propagation, ☁, to overtake; like puffs of smoke with a natural reach of twice the length of everything else in the Sky set (whole hand length minimum)
Dying Will Flames of the Ocean/Sea: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed); appearance. Funfact: this set has the most desaturated colors as though it’s deeper in the sea, though if you go for max 240-value saturation they’re still discernible from the other sets.
WHIRLPOOL: #DE7C66 light scarlet, combustion (rapid burning), ☁/♋/☀, ♓ (Pisces symbol, yes, but fish live in pools; also what the fuck, I see literal fish as the symbol everywhere else but this fucking site); elongated fingers of flame that seem to spin or spiral their entire length rather than just the tips like Storm does, like screws or a helix
OCEAN: #FF7700 vivid orange, encompass, 12% (13/108) on all with remainder divided, ☵ (the trigram for water yo; easily distinguishable from both Sky & Earth, even has a mini horizon on there to make a "between the Earth & the Heavens" metaphor); heavy fire, somewhat similar to a tri-pronged crown or W that flutters like it's in the wind
VOLCANO: #C2AC1D moderate gold, acidification (pH cycling), ♋/☀/ϟ, ☈ (the symbol for thunderstorms which I find appropriate, b/c volcanoes can actually spawn these); smokey & partially see thru w/ green halo edging, fuzzy-looking around the edges, tho for a better visual of what I mean, look up fire opals
CURRENT: #85B357 moderate chartreuse, magnetism, ☀/ϟ/☂, ☄ (actually symbolizes comets, but it's theorized comets brought water to Earth anyway); clumps together, lengths loop each other to form a field, look at your hand in the process of turning into a fist, it’s like that
WATERFALL: #306D78 arctic blue, binding, ϟ/☂/♒, ♆ (fuck yeah, the symbol for Neptune sure, but rivers were his children &/or domain as all rivers lead to the ocean); elastic & flexible with no purely set expression beyond naturally long reach (the longest Flame overall)
MOON: #9999CC deep periwinkle, reflection, ☂/♒/☁, ☾ (obvious); moves like a shadow where there’s three or more overlapping areas w/ a natural wave pattern, if you’ve ever seen the sun during a heatwave it’s like where it wobbles due to the thermal air currents so the sun itself doesn’t look like a full disc
TIDE: #CFA7C3 light fuchsia, expansion, ♒/☁/♋, ♎ (the symbol for Libra & the alchemical symbol for the subliminal; also looks like the moon rising from the sea); light, aggressively more magenta when hyper-layered, leaves afterimages like when staring into a bright light, strangely behaves like a less intense Sun Flame where it’s an overall but softer & rounder glow rather than jetting out
Dying Will Flames of the Earth/Soil: NAME: hex code, attribute, symbol (reason if needed); appearance
SWAMP: #FFB482 tangelo, fermentation (living things), 28% (30) ♋/☀ each, ☣ (biohazard was a perfect fit); almost flat but highly agitated w/ irregular flares & flickers, highest temp behind Earth in this set, technically shortest Flame at half a finger height (knuckle to first joint)
EARTH: #BD3900 vermillion, gravity, 14% (15) all, ☷ (trigram for earth); dense & exceptionally rounded fire, appearing like a split V flame that doesn’t move about as much as an actual fire, more pulled together
FOREST: #A6DE5D electric lime, growth, 23% (25) ☀/ϟ each, ♣ (club suit b/c it looks like a little tree); thin, finely branched & erratic fire, with unpredictable sparks
MOUNTAIN: #62BD8E spring green, compression, 28% (30) ϟ/☂ each, ▲ (it's a triangle, but it doubles as a mountain symbol on maps); almost opaque, w/ a fat bottom and narrow top (shaped like a deflated balloon if such a thing floated in your palm) & slow sinuous motion (the widest Flame at the base at around twice the width of the palm holding it, picture lava lamp wax)
DESERT: #1C6BFF cobalt, emergence (big patterns that appear b/c of small things, ex. ripples in sand from wind movement pushing grains around, or the uniqueness of snowflakes) (also influenced by InsaneScriptist's One Piece/KHR xover fic Xanxus' Adventures in Parenthood Piracy where Desert flames are many illusions stacked onto each other), 32% (35) ☂/♒ each, ✿ (black florette b/c I can't really see the white one, & desert flowers are very pretty); perfectly transparent but for a tint, warps the coloring immediately around it into the blue spectrum, a place where it’s just inexplicably blue above where it’s being held, like staring into a mirror reflecting itself greener and greener, but if made visible to others it might give an appearance of sand because it’s also not a very “even” or “smooth” Flame
GLACIER: #C68CFF light violet, fortification taking the form of crystals as it’s just that intense, 37% (40) ♒/☁ each, ♦ (diamond suit b/c that's a basic crystal shape, also to not leave Forest as a card by itself); upside down kite shape w/ barbed & jagged edges like frost, not see through like you almost expect tho it’s the whitest one in general w/ bright vivid color at the edge
GEYSER: #99007D red plum, extension, 32% (35) ☁/♋ each, ♨ (hot springs are close enough to geysers for me to the connection); like heated water complete w/ dense steaming, and the leading edge even redder
Have a handy little mnemonic pic to remember how to get what.
And just who can forget Night Flames either? I headcanon that Night was one of the 3 human Flames before the Earthlings like Kawahira were forced to pass the other 3 sets onto humans to sustain life; Snow, Void, & Night were all buried under and/or split between the newer sets, which is why no one ever pulls them forth until Bermuda has his Flames torn out by his Pacifier being taken by Checkerface.
SNOW: silvery-white, absorption (base reason for why humans can become all sorts of creatures, but never back), prevalent ☀ &/or ☂ &/or ☁, ☊ (ascending node, alchemical symbol for sublimation). Appearance: aerogel if it was fire shaped, glowing around the edges like a halo, pale silver-ish, a defined or captured mist spray.
VOID: (perfect) gray, preservation, ☰ &/or ☵ &/or ☷, ⊕ (alchemical symbol for verdigris, symbol for Earth the planet). This was basically the first version of Skies, Oceans, & Earths for humans. Appearance: a blooming iridescence, like summoning a faint rainbow upon a slick surface but in petaled flower silhouette (inherent control of it’s user imparts the number of petals).
NIGHT: black*, perpetuity (grim determination to do this ONE thing & damn the consequences, to carry on), prevalent ♋ &/or ϟ &/or ♒, ☋ (descending node, alchemical symbol for purification). Appearance: invisible unless moving, black & heavy looking when it does almost like a smear or smudge, with a type of simmering heat to it, an absence of light (resulting in a clear pacifier). *You know the video game thing/unresolvable YouTube video error where it’s supposed to be dark but it’s actually just a dark grey that feels creepy to look at too long? That color.
(I got a lot, seriously a bunch of other shit attributed to each Flame too, but this thing is already long enough. If I get interest, I’ll just make another post).
This has Earth-set Flames absurdly specialist but still very possible by accident, while leaving the Ocean-set harder to achieve any other way but naturally feeling the resolve for each separate component Flame. It also makes Oceans & Earths fundamentally Skies, just denser or even-keeled if you can get that. (compare phases of matter as gas [always chaotic], liquid [clumping together but still fairly energetic], and solid [at least mostly rigid in state]).
You also don’t need to be part of the same set to be considered an element, either... folding down anyway. A fully realized Earth could only truly bond w/ only Earth-set Flames, an Ocean could bond w/ Ocean-set Flames, but a Sky could bond w/ anyone by latching onto just one Flame, disregarding if it’s part of a composite Flame. Earth and/or Ocean Flames might identify more as a Sky than their ‘proper’ label as a matter of self-preservation as their elements are so rare, so would feel more at home pulling in Sky elements rather than Ocean or Earth elements. (not that it’d stop them if given the choice).
This all neatly dovetails into headcanon Flames for Class 1A for BNHA, arranged by set then seat.
From the Sky-set, you got:
Asui Tsuyu: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 37=34%; ϟ: 11=10%; ☂: 37=34%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 11=10%; (☀, ☂). You can’t tell me she talks with that huge tongue without having to Actively shoot it, right? Rain because she’s just so naturally calm.
Mashirao Ojiro (6): ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 9=8%; ϟ: 9=8%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 72=66%; (☁). Because he seems kinda distant to me like most of KHR Clouds seem to be in theory, idk why. I do think he’s cool tho.
Kaminari Denki: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 36=33%; ϟ: 24=22%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 30=28%; (☀, ϟ, ☁). Sun b/c his lightning is actually yellow so I theorize he’s actually Propagating his natural Activated bioelectricity via Cloud, but there’s enough Lightning to leave him intact doing so and lend his bioelectricity it’s more elongated shape. A further headcanon is that his family’s lightning quirks all effectively have different colors.
Kirishima Eijirou: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 13=12%; ϟ: 48=44%; ☂: 17=16%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 16=15%; (ϟ). That’s some classic Lightning right there.
Jiro Kyouka: ♋: 9=8%; ☀: 18=17%; ϟ: 18=17%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 40=37%; (☁). To make the sound of her heartbeat exponentially louder like a boss. Also introduces sensitivity problems.
Tokoyami Fumikage: ♋: 22=20%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 26=24%; ♒: 40=37%; ☁: 8=7%; (♋, ☂, ♒). Mist to materialize Dark Shadow, Rain to be dense enough to interact w/ which when paired w/ Storm fucks w/ him when Dark Shadow gets too powerful (ie overwhelming him & largely destructive).
fuck Mineta, let’s replace him
I can’t believe I have shamed myself into including him
Mineta Minoru: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 30=28%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 26=24%; ☁: 33=30%; (☀, ♒, ☁). While he can inherently multiply what’s essentially wads of his hair, Mist is what imparts it’s special properties (otherwise he’d stick to his pillows & his clothes would catch on when he gets dressed), & Sun lets him naturally produce more. This is where overuse comes into play; too much Sun Flame in too short a time frame splits the skin, though thankfully the bloodflow washes out anything that might’ve evolved into cancer cells before it begins healing. I figure if he trains more & CAREFULLY, he might start using Sun to more enhance Cloud allowing him more stamina w/ his quirk.
From the Ocean-set, you get:
Ashido Mina: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 20=19%; ϟ: 25=23%; ☂: 10=9%; ♒: 15=14%; ☁: 8=7%; (♋, ☀, ϟ) / (☈): she adjusts pH to get what she wants. It’s fair chance she was born with near-Sky values.
Iida Tenya: ♋: 19=18%; ☀: 21=19%; ϟ: 19=18%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 22=20%; ☁: 20=19%; (♋, ☀, ϟ, ♒, ☁) / (♓, ♎w). Combustion engine, baby! He’s exploding things to go faster. His family’s been cultivating this particular quirk so long his line is close to producing Skies!
Uraraka Ochako: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 22=20%; ϟ: 23=21%; ☂: 24=22%; ♒: 19=18%; ☁: 14=13%; (☀, ϟ, ☂, ♒) / (☄, ♆w, ☾). Manipulating magnetism to cancel out a lot of the gravity by making it attracted to itself & only itself so repelling everything not itself, & reflection to drop them back into gravity by touching her own fingertips. Her Cloud attribute isn’t actually able to manifest outside of her body b/c it lacks outward-manifesting strength; it makes up for this in being able to apply Moon w/ extra depth & precision. The depth part is what makes her nauseous. She’s actually got a hidden attribute in Waterfall/binding! She might be able to functionally (seek a) target where she drops stuff later on if she discovers it.
Mezou Shouji: ♋: 22=20%; ☀: 12=11%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 28=26%; ☁: 34=31%; (♋, ♒, ☁) / (♎). Expansion materializes new body parts with the help of Mist, Cloud to shorthand remember bodyparts he’s already got, & Storm to reabsorb them when they’re no longer needed.
Hagakure Tooru: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 36=33%; ♒: 30=28%; ☁: 24=22%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / (☾). She’s just straight up reflecting most if not all light that hits her body, which is why you can see her clothing but not her. HC she’s got excellent night vision; you might see a bit of eyeshine even!
Hmmm... for funsies, how about:
Shinsou Hitoshi: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 36=33%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 24=22%; ☁: 6=6%; (ϟ, ☂, ♒) / (♆). He takes control by binding his will on top of yours, like puppet strings. He reroutes your actions to his command w/ a combination of redirecting your natural electrical signals in your brain (which is why getting jarred will return your action to you) & Mist enabling him to do it in ways that won’t get detected until he does it. He’d be unstoppable if he ever worked out how to do it without the invitation; though as it’s partly psychological he might stop himself from ever overcoming that limitation.
And lastly from the Earth-set, you have:
Aoyama Yuuga: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 29=27%; ϟ: 28=26%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 7=6%; (♋, ☀, ϟ) / (☈) / (☣). He’s fermenting the bacteria in his stomach by changing the acidity of his stomach acids whenever he shoots his laser. Boy’s gotta eat if he wants it to recharge.
Kouda Kouji: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 37=34%; ϟ: 37=34%; ☂: 11=10%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 6=6%; (☀, ϟ) / x / (♣). He can communicate w/ living things b/c he’s basically making them recognize him as a friend (not that he doesn’t make friends with them anyway, tho).
Satou Rikidou: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 22=20%; ϟ: 32=30%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 7=6%; (☀, ϟ, ☂) / ☄w / (▲). He compresses sugar to allow his body to process it quicker without it having to be digested first.
Sero Hanta: ♋: 35=32%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 6=6%; ☁: 48=44%; (♋, ☁) / x / (♨). He produces something sticky then extends it very far.
Yaoyorozu Momo: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 7=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 35=32%; ♒: 35=32%; ☁: 19=18%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / ☾w / (✿). This is obvious, but I will say she gives whatever she makes true form because she’s using both knowledge to give it form & real energy derived from her body to give it material, which is why nothing dissolves away once she turns away from it.
You might have noticed a few missing. Here’s Todoroki w/ some calculations for his family members! Yeah!
Enji Todoroki/Endeavor: ♋: 49=45%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 25=23%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 13=12%; (♋, ☂). Storm because fire (named Hellfire because it curls strangely & the fact it could burn everything), Rain for upping temperature by effecting density (meaning a thinner stream of fire).
Touya/Dabi: ♋: 37=34%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 17=16%; ♒: 9=8%; ☁: 33=30%; (♋, ☁), Storm has the lowest energy & temperature imo, and Cloud’s b/c he can make a LOT of fire; I HC it’s more than Dumpster Fire could manage (that guy’s more of a precision over power kinda guy Flame wise, even if still pretty powerful). This Todoroki bro is just that good with his quirk, to produce blue fire by pure willpower.
Fuyumi: ♋: 13=12%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 34=31%; ♒: 29=27%; ☁: 19=18%; (☂, ♒, ☁) / ♎w, ☾w. She’s totally a Rain, you can fight me on this. Her quirk’s gotta be something Asshole would consider useless for Hero work, so I’ll venture it might be Chill: temperature manipulation with a leaning towards cooler temps. If she ever became truly aware of the possibilities she could conjure, she’d obliterate him. Have fun sparking fire when everything refuses to heat up, bitch, lmao.
Natsuo: ♋: 8=7%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 13=12%; ☂: 16=15%; ♒: 49=45%; ☁: 16=15%; (♒). Mostly so every single Todoroki has their own major element, though it’s still an entirely possible outcome from his parents. I don’t think he’s publicly quirkless because if that was a possibility his father would’ve gotten a new wife/brood mare b/c he’s THAT asshole. However, his Mist is strong enough that even if he was, he could’ve become an Active Flame user at a young age, and Mist’s pale blue color and gaseous form (if seen) might’ve made him seem like another temperature manipulator, thus also useless for his father’s ambitions. If he’s the type, he might be using it as a more physical support for himself, such as running longer or lifting more without injury than should be possible for someone who doesn’t exercise, that kind of thing.
Shouto: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 42=38%; ☁: 42=38%; (♒, ☁) / x / (♦). He’s the ultimate ice maker, & the fire side is just genetics making a general fire. If he ever became able to use Flames instead of fire, the fire would instead be a violet color rather than the yellowish one that it is now. Mist & Cloud are higher than his mother’s due to some very mild combination with his father’s values. It also makes his ice & consequently his fire VERY strong, considering every scrap not needed by the others is fed into his ice.
Rei: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 7=6%; ☂: 9=8%; ♒: 40=37%; ☁: 40=37%; (♒, ☁) / x / (♦). Ice, but a bit more spread out for variety. I’ve given her a common surname Yukimura, 雪村 "snow village" that alludes to her ice quirk, Flame, & the fact she seems to have had little support over the years.
Here’s Bakugou & Izuku!
Bakugou Katsuki: ♋: 30=28%; ☀: 30=28%; ϟ: 13=12%; ☂: 13=12%; ♒: 11=10%; ☁: 11=10%; ☰, (♋, ☀) / x / (☣). A first generation Sky. Fermentation applies to various bacteria that’s present in his sweat b/c they live on his skin, with Storm killing them & Sun activating whatever is left behind. He doesn’t always use Storm, which just leaves Sun sparking his palms, a holdover from his father also being a Swamp user.
Midoriya Izuku: ♋: 18=17%; ☀: 14=13%; ϟ: 26=24%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 14=13%; ☁: 22=20%; ☰, (ϟ, ☁) / ☵, (♓, ♎). A legacy Sky from his mother’s side (she’s an Earth as is most of the family on that half of his tree), though it’s completely chance he managed to be an Ocean b/c the values his father had lowered just the right higher Earth stats his mother had. Lightning & Cloud have high values enough to be secondaries, which actually shows up whenever he uses One for All which is naturally propagating to begin with. He’s got the proper Lightning appearing & everything. Whirlpool & Tide are an accident of numbers but also greatly appreciated by enabling better control? allocation? of One for All’s power.
Here’s everyone else who didn’t fit anything else above, like teachers & secondary characters!
Midoriya Inko: ♋: 18=17%; ☀: 15=14%; ϟ: 15=14%; ☂: 18=17%; ♒: 21=19%; ☁: 21=19%; ☰, (♒, ☁) / ☵, (♓, ♆) / ☷. She pulls things like gravity, ‘nuff said.
Hisashi Midoriya: ♋: 19=18%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 31=29%; ☂: 7=6%; ♒: 22=20%; ☁: 23=21%; (♋, ϟ, ♒, ☁) / ♎w. Aways from being a Sky, but any potential offspring have a fairly good chance of being one with the right spouse/Inko. His ϟ deals with plasma, ☁ gives some projection so he doesn’t light himself on fire, ♒ a bit of fireproofing to the body parts & organs involved in fire-beathing, & ♋ some true (excuse the pun) fire power to what he can disintergrate w/ the fire produced. End result is a whitish-yellow flame between 2,200 °F (1,200 °C) & 2,400 °F (1,300 °C). I HC that he doesn’t have a very far reach with his fire-breath, about an arm length maybe unless he’s so emotional he lights some Cloud so it’s a full body length or longer. I also HC he took his wife’s name when they married, so I use Teiko (醍醐 "Good liquor, fine wine; clarified butter, ghee," w/ a pun of 大悟 "enlightenment") as his previous surname.
Aizawa Shouta: ♋: 20=19%; ☀: 7=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 29=27%; ♒: 25=23%; ☁: 21=19%; (♋, ☂, ♒, ☁) / (☾). He’s sending a cancellation wave (the reverse reflection, no?) but the pale color of Moon is overpowered by his visible Storm which gives his eyes a visage of red & makes them dry af. He releases it in waves w/ Rain being the largest component meaning it floats his hair & gives the appearance of being underwater. Doubly powerful in that Rain, Mist, & Cloud are divisible by both points and percentage.
Camie: ♋: 7=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 21=19%; ☂: 30=28%; ♒: 38=35%; ☁: 6=6%; (ϟ, ☂, ♒) / ♆w / (✿). I made her a Desert rather than just a regular Mist because I had another calculation, tbh. I also figure Desert would be more fitting since while dramatic she’s also fairly chill and likes a good laugh, & Mist always seemed like a “effect self” more than “effect others” kind of utilization (not that it’s not possible or anything, obvs). Waterfall is for when she finally gets that little niggle in her technique that will allow her to greatly expand the range she currently has, as in “will hold until she lets it drop” kinda range.
Hawks: ♋: 6=6%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 49=45%; ☂: 14=13%; ♒: 26=24%; ☁: 7=6%; (ϟ, ♒). His wings can do and handle some crazy shit because they are made of reinforced (ϟ) crazy shit (♒), and that’s just how he is.
Villains!
All For One: ♋: 11=10%; ☀: 19=18%; ϟ: 20=19%; ☂: 12=11%; ♒: 35=32%; ☁: 11=10%; ☰, (☀, ϟ, ♒). Mist for it being a mostly mental power for all that it effects his body, Sun to pull up the right genetics configuration FOR the quirks he’s taken, Lightning so his actual DNA is protected or lets him revert back to his own.
Shigaraki Tomura/Shimura Tenko: ♋: 71=65%; ☀: 6=6%; ϟ: 6=6%; ☂: 6=6%; ♒: 8=7%; ☁: 11=10%; (♋). Simple. Got deep reserves & relatively high quirk stamina from Nana's side thru his father.
Since it’s a common headcanon that Skies will vie for elements until they got a full arc & put themselves against other Skies in order to get the ones they want, Bakugou & Izuku were put into an instinctive conflict when Bakugou got access to his quirk. Oceans Encompass so Izuku seriously just did want to be friends for a good while for all he wasn’t Active, but Bakugou doesn’t or didn’t get that because he saw Izuku as a potential or possibly actual disruption to his own Harmony.
And since to have Flames the Earthlings need to have existed, I’m proposing that the Trinisette was disrupted by whatever, such as a mission for potential Arcobaleno resulting in all of them dying with/without ever bonding to the Pacifiers or Kawahira dying either before Bermuda could come into being/Bermuda got a lucky shot in before abruptly staying dead from backlash, & quirks are what appeared from Flames spiraling out of control. Flame distribution is fairly unique even among close family members, resulting in equally unique is similar quirks.
BNHA-verse has gotta prepare for a big storm, is what I’m saying.
+edit: Maybe All for One was one of the first Quirked people to be born to that first disruption wave & discovered he could take Quirks, went out of his way to get powerful ‘Quirks’ first (or what he thought of as Quirks/super powers, but might have been Flame abilities specialized or not), resulting in a shortage of any potential emergency Arcobaleno if Kawahira didn’t die off suddenly.

The Last Bookstore is one of those places that I want to visit...but honestly I might have to make a trip to SoCal -=just=- for that. (I have acquaintances in SoCal, but no friends. I'm also not a fan of amusement parks, having worked in one for five years while in HS/college.)
Honestly, it’s a cool bookstore and it’s got some neat design, but I don’t know that I’d plan an entire visit around it, unless you’re pretty close to SoCal anyway. It was fun to wander around in, but it’s about an hour’s worth of fun and then you’ve pretty much seen everything. On the other hand, the area around it is pretty cool too -- the historic Pueblo of Los Angeles is nearby, which has a small museum and some nice outdoor spaces. The LA area does have more to offer than Disney! It’s just often kind of spread out.

If you stick with a navel and very, very carefully separate the sections so that none of them are torn open, they will roast into little puffy pillows filled with an orange jelly-like substance. This will not work with a clementine or a mandarin and probably not with a tangelo. And not everyone is into hot orange jelly.
I....I may need to try this.

Is that the Japanese-American internment camp? I read a really interesting novel that mentioned it, focus was more on Japanese-Canadian camp. I didn't realize the camp was memorialized.
Yes -- the camp isn’t exactly “preserved” in that the barracks buildings are almost all gone and the empty spaces are pretty overgrown, but there’s a road around the camp so you can drive through it, and there are placards every so often where you can get out and look at things. Several of the “gardens” (mostly decorative ponds and some landscape features) are preserved but not operational; they also keep up the baseball field, basketball court, and a couple of buildings. It’s quite a haunting site, and they’ve done very well at trying to put you into the shoes of the people imprisoned there.
Because I went to high school in California we had a lot of internment history in school -- I think I read the novel you may have read, was it Obasan? But if you’re interested in Manzanar, there’s a compelling memoir called Farewell To Manzanar, written by a woman who was seven when she and her family were imprisoned following Pearl Harbor.

You are getting some California weather at its most typical- an oddly warm Thanksgiving!
It was really amazing -- even when we were up in the mountains the only time I needed to wear layers was at Mammoth Lake on Wednesday night. The entire rest of the time my leather jacket or a wool sweater were almost too warm. I hiked the sequoias in a t-shirt and wished I’d worn shorts.

I SO ENJOYED THEM. We took a shortcut from 395 that involved cutting through the southern end of Sequoia national park, and right at the start of it we found ourselves in this MASSIVE forest of Joshua Trees, it was pretty spectacular. (178 west from 395 to Bakersfield, but DO NOT take 155 from 178, it’s the windingest winding road ever).

I challenge you to do the whole fruit ask list B)
Oh geez lol. I had to pull out my laptop for this one. Let’s do this thing!
peach: do you have any piercings or tattoos?
I have two piercings in each ear, just like the normal ones in the earlobe. I want to get tattoos, but they cost lots of money that I don’t have.
raspberry: favorite flower?
I have a strange fondness for tiger lilies. I think it’s because they grow wild near my house and it’s one of the few naturally orange flowers in the north east. Orange was my favorite color when I was younger.
lemon: do you have any pets? what are their names?
Oh boy oh boy oh boy I have a pit bull/ German shepherd mix rescue dog names Tsula (pronounced soo-lah), and three shorthair cats, Maya (who is exclusively mine, she’s all black, down to her nose and toe beans), Sweet Pea (Maya’s mother, calico, and a fat asshole), and Battle Cat (the skinniest little pain in the butt who loves head skritches and everyone who had ever met him)
mango: what is your trademark?
My trademark? As in what do I wear or do all of the time? Well, I’m a sarcastic little asshole, jot that down. I’m also unapologetically me. I hold my morals, I keep to myself, and I love who I love without fear.
passion fruit: how would you describe your style?
Soft Grunge Emo with a side of Whatever the Fuck is Comfortable.
pineapple: sexual orientation?
Pansexual. Or as I call it, “Everybody’s hot can I fuck you all?”
strawberry: favorite desserts?
Reese’s peanut butter cups or chocolate ice cream with crushed oreos (like half a package of crushed oreos) on top. Also my friend Glenn’s cookies and my friend Nick’s strawberry shortcake. Nothing compares.
cherry: can you play any musical instruments or can you sing?
Hell yeah! I play guitar (not that I’ve had much time to play lately, sadly) and I sing a whole bunch. I’ll sing to myself mostly, but I also sing to my friend’s siblings and to the kids I babysit. I kind of have a thing where I “give” the kids a song that I sing for them. This two year old I babysit claimed “How Long” by the Eagles when I sang it quietly so she would nap. It was pretty cute, considering the kids only listen to classical music when their mother is around.
grape: if you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I want to visit my friend in all the corners of the world. I also want to go to Great Britain again, or camping somewhere where I could go stargazing, preferably when there’s also a meteor shower happening.
banana: favorite horror movies?
Well, I’m not sure if this really counts, but I love Repo! The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival. I need to rewatch both. I also like Oculus. Trouble is, I haven’t watched a lot of horror movies. I love them, but I don’t like watching them alone. I also tend to point out scientific inaccuracies so people don’t want to watch them with me. It’s quite the conundrum. Also, I will NEVER see IT. Clowns creep me out. I do really enjoy American Horror Story though (I know it’s TV but still).
blackberry: is your life an action film, a comedy, a romantic comedy, or drama?
My live is a shitty B movie that no one watches, are you kidding me?
pomegranate: when do you feel the most confident?
Ha ha ha ha what the fuck is confidence? I guess it would be when my professors make note of how good my writing is. I had this one amazing guy for creative writing last semester, so I took his studies in young adult fiction class this semester. I got an A+ on my midterm because of a really well written essay (don’t know how that happened), as well as an A on a paper I almost completely bullshitted the night before it was due. He actually read a portion out loud to the class because I worded something about maturity very well (heh, I based it on my real life experiences). He’s always complimenting me, and keeps asking how my book is going (terribly, lol). So I guess I feel most confident when people compliment my work, not me.
cantaloupe: what are your parents' names?
I feel like this is really awkward personal information and they wouldn’t want me sharing it on the interwebs... They both start with D, though.
guava: dark & dramatic makeup or natural makeup?
Hella dark and dramatic. Remember that whole “Soft Grunge Emo” thing? Yeah. I lay that eyeliner on fierce.
tangelo: if you could be any mythical creature, which would you be?
A merman or a centaur. I dig the freedom, and the idea of being a mermaid has always been appealing to me. But could I be a wizard? Is that a mythical creature, even if it’s also human?
plum: favorite clothing brands?
I... I buy my clothes from walmart or I get a shit ton of hand me downs... Or I go to goodwill... Like I don’t have a clue what brands I like. “Comfy”. There we go.
coconut: favorite perfume?
I don’t wear perfume so I will replace this with my favorite candle scents: woodsy or beach-y. I also like stuff that smells like that fresh rain scent.
lychee: satin or lace?
Both. Although I do lean more towards lace.
blueberry: what do you want to dress up as for halloween?
I’m probably gonna wear my Deadpool onesie not gonna lie. I also have a Rapunzel dress I made in high school, as well as a red velvet cape. So I don’t know. I’m not big on dressing up.
apple: what do you use more, tumblr or twitter?
Tumblr. I can’t escape the hellsite. I had a twitter for like... three months and I only tweeted like a dozen times. One of my friends from high school manages to find my account and I’m very concerned because I made sure not to talk to most of my graduating class. But anyways I stopped using it ages ago. I really only followed comedians on it.
kiwi: what's something that fascinates you?
People. I hate them, at least, most of them, but they fascinate me. However I refuse to become an anthropologist. I am hoping to be a medical type person, ideally a doctor. I’m basically Dr. House.
watermelon: do you have a job? if so, what is your job title?
I’m a freaking cashier at a grocery store chain in the north east. That’s my job title.
papaya: what song describes your aesthetic?
I’m not really sure. My aesthetic is so jumbled, and I listen mostly to classic rock music, so the two don’t really coincide much.
cranberry: favorite time of the day; morning, afternoon, dusk, or night?
Night, by far. It’s peaceful then.
nectarine: would you consider yourself an emotional person?
Yes and no. I feel very strongly when I do feel. Trouble is, most of the time, I don’t feel.
orange: do you have long eyelashes?
Nope.
apricot: what do you do when you're sad?
Cry. Listen to music. Talk to my best friend. I think he wishes I would talk to other people sometimes lol. But mostly I keep to myself.
star fruit: favorite sea creature?
Octopi. I love their intelligent natures.
dragonfruit: do you drink alcohol?
Yep. I go for IPAs and vodka. Probably vodka more than beer now, but I’ll take what I can get.
Thank’s for this! It was really fun to answer.

@elwingflight tagged me in this, and i love that we are apparently all reacting to having a network of IRL tumblr friends by trying to revive LJ memes, as though any of us were conscious humans while this was still a thing people did. genuinely though i love reading your responses and i’m very happy to know about everyone’s favorite flower now
Rules: Answer these questions, and tag 20 some number of followers that you would like to get to know better.
Name: L [redacted for privacy and also i guess “gender”]
Nickname: none
Zodiac sign: capricorn
Hogwarts house: I-- really? okay, ravenclaw
Height: 5′9″
Sexual Orientation: gay
Ethnicity: white/ashkie
Favorite fruit: minneola tangelo
Favorite season: fall
Favorite book series: both “favorite” and “series” are concepts i have difficulty with. “haunting of hill house” and “we have always lived in the castle” as a sort of self-created diptych? ....the lord of the rings but like. not enough for me to have bothered to reread them in half a decade??
Favorite fictional characters: let’s assume my “favorite” caveats continue throughout & i’ll just hand you some stuff. this so hard, i don’t think this way-- okay, audy and mako trig (and of course implicitly larry, and also implicitly [redacted for spoilers]&[similarly redacted]). lirael. maladict and polly. idk, i don’t really get attached to characters, i don’t like them like you’d like a person, this is something that has always bewildered me about the way other people seem to read and understand stories. a character does whatever happens in the story next, they’re not a person, they operate by individual rules but those rules are rarely important enough for me to pause and say “hang on, that doesn’t feel right” unless i think the story is being a bad story or, very rarely, they aren’t talking correctly. i don’t really have a favorite assemblage of like, narratively directed rule-actions.
Favorite flower: lilac as a desperate emotional-regulatory sensory tactic, rose as a sensory touchpoint for fondly-recalled emotional memories listen, not every point of my taste can be distilled into correctly semi-obscure curated interests, sometimes you just like roses.
Favorite scents: lemon, lilac as above, baking bread, the way that S’s skin smells which is bizarrely similar to baking bread, roses, fish
Favorite color: the range from maroon to jewel-toned warm purple, charcoal grey
Favorite animal: again, what does it even mean to have a favorite animal? like, what does that translate to? it’s totally incoherent to me as a question, why would i like one kind of organism the most of all the kinds. i guess i enjoy... the companionship... of my dog. i experienced a brief but wild passion for vampyroteuthis in my childhood, but this was a youthful indiscretion. a lapse, after the more refined period from ages 4 to 7, in which i claimed my favorite animal was the rhinoceros hornbill because i needed to outshine my classmates, who i knew would all pick something prosaic like the cheetah.
Favorite artist/band: los campesinos!, mountain goats, sufjan stevens. although this list has only a loose correspondence to who i currently listen to the most, which would be tmg + owen pallett, some andrew bird, islands, maybe generationals, sleigh bells if i’m really depressed
Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa?: hot chocolate for actual taste experience, tea only because i can drink it without making myself sick
Average sleep hours: 5-6
Number of blankets you sleep with: one
Dream trip: take metra sleeper train out to visit childhood best friend, wander around california, reexperience redwoods. or, go to paris with S, from there take train around europe, visit salzburg again and finally see germany and italy. or, nyc, with S and a couple of well-versed friends and at least a full day to spend at the moma
Last thing Googled: “dancing in the dark lyrics”. there’s a joke here somewhere. it’s on me.
Blog created: i remade so this one is from january 2016 but i joined tumblr in march of 2012
How many blogs do I follow: 243, although i only consciously regularly see posts from maybe 50-70 of those
Number of followers: 142
What do I usually post about: uh. if original posts, then weird navelgazing, sideways jokes, misery about assorted illnesses. otherwise i reblog a lot of jokes about lesbianism, tumblr ~vibes~, and the inevitable day when i will be killed by a horse.
Do you get asks regularly: if i solicit them. otherwise, probably mercifully, no
What is your aesthetic: piles of rescued discarded library books about philosophy, education practice, and media from between 1890 and 1970; white walls without things on them; overly complex narratives justifying mildly adventurous fashion choices; self-mutilating body horror
Tagging: uh. @idionkisson? it seems like maybe you might like doing this thing? oh and @thatguywithhippyhair completing the irl circle. and anyone else who’d like to.

Cat Mentoring P. Two
Today was my final day of cat mentoring. Starting Monday I'll be able to schedule myself with cat care whenever I'd like to. Today started out with a review of basics that I learned last week, as I had a different mentor today and so she wanted to make sure she had covered all the bases. Today was definitely more hands on than last week. After we redid the tour and covered all the basics she mainly went over how to approach a cat. We went through how to pick them up, how to draw them out of their cages, and how to read their body language. For instance, you shouldn't approach a cat if it's hair is standing up, if its tail is repeatedly switching back and fourth, or if it's pupils are narrowed. We learned what to do if a cat bites or scratches someone last week, and I'm glad we did because I had first hand experience in that today. I was going to put a cat, named Tangelo, back into his kennel and he got scared and bit me. What I had to do was go to the adoption center and let them know what had happened. Following this, a lady took me to the room where people looking for lost pets or surrendering a pet go, as they also handle bites and scratches. The ladies examined my bite, and I explained what happened. As it didn't not break the skin, they didn't need to file a report on it. If it had broken the skin, then Tangelo would've been placed in a quarantine for ten days to be examined, and make sure he can still be adopted. I think it's very good that they do that, because it can prevent more accidents from happening, and if something is wrong with the cat they can help him or her out. After that incident I went to take my assessment, which I passed. The assessment is just something everyone takes at the end of mentoring so they make sure everyone is up to date on information. It asked things like business hours, dress code, events and specials, and how to care for the animals. I got lots of expierence as I got to take care of about 10 different cats today, although I wanted to focus on working so I didn't get as many pictures today. All of the cats that I worked with were very sweet and none of them seemed to have a very mean disposition. I think it's awesome that they teach the new volunteers through hands on work because it gets you used to what you'll be doing when you're alone, and if you have any questions you can just immediately ask someone. I found the teachers I've worked with and the other staff members really value their jobs and the animals health and safety above all else when at work, and it brings me joy to know that I really picked the perfect thing for me, and I'm really working at a great place!

The AMAZON PARROT and How They Are Amazing
The Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona oratrix), also known as the Yellow-headed Parrot, Double Yellow-headed Amazon, etc., is an endangered amazon parrot of Mexico and northern Central America. Measuring 38–43 cm (15–17 in) in length, it is a stocky short-tailed green parrot with a yellow head. It prefers to live in mangrove forests or forests near rivers or other bodies of water. It is often considered a subspecies of the Yellow-crowned Amazon. It is a popular pet and an excellent talker. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I am going to introduce you to my Red-Lored Amazon Parrot, Gonzo. He is the mildest in temperament for an Amazon Parrot. He loves to be around people maybe not very cuddly, but his personality outshines that. He is very intelligent and it attentive when being spoken to. He understands you and responds to you when he is told not to do something. He is much like a dog and very loyal. I am very fortunate to have an Amazon like Gonzo.
Now we are going to talk of the genus of all Amazon parrots. There are about 30 different species within the Amazon genus. They are all on the CITES index, which means that Amazon parrots, like Macaws, Pionus, Caique parrots all protected exportation out of the wilds like Brazil, Central and South America and the likes of Mexico.
On what is called the CITES Treaty; CITES stands for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna. The CITES also known as the Washington Convention was created by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It was adopted in 1963, the convention then opened for signatures in 1973 and entered into force on July 1, 1985.
I ask that if you do decide on an Amazon parrot be very careful as to where you purchase your Amazon from. They are an endangered species and they need to be protected by people, like you and I. That is why I highly recommend getting a hand-fed baby or adopting an older parrot. The difference between a wild caught and domestic parrot is the band they have on their leg; an open band means they have been taken out their country of origin and a closed band means they were hatched and hand-fed in the country you reside in. Many breeders do band their babies for statistical reasons, by keeping clean blood lines and knowing which aviary the baby came from. If a breeder does not band their babies I would be weary of that purchase. Remember that if one day certain species of Amazon's may become extinct in the wild, it will be you and I who not let them be forgotten; as they will be our domestic companions.
An Amazon parrot's life span, with them being healthy is around 50 years or even longer as long as they have had good nutrition and have been well taken care with their needs in mind. They are a medium size bird about 10-20 inches from head to toe. Amazon parrots have short stubby tails. Their primary colors are green feathers with coloring on their head and/or their face. Some can be very colorful to just a multitude of greens.
Diet
An Amazon parrot's diet, you have to be careful as they have a tendency to become overweight with lack of exercise from being in a cage for a number of hours a day. They eat seed, pellets, fruits, veggies and some may like human food. I highly recommend putting a pellet in their diet. It has nutrients not found in seed. Fresh fruits and veggies are very important as they contain phytonutrients (antioxidant pigments), that is not found in seed and pellets. Your Amazon needs nutritional food and also a variety of other foods because as they become bored, they need the variety for psychological enrichment. Food is mealtime but it is also playtime. Like your two year old child, mealtime is fun time. The fruits and veggies that are rich in vitamin A are dark green leaf veggies, carrots (the baby ones whole), mangos and sweet potatoes. The reason for vitamin enriched foods is because Amazon's are prone to this deficiency. All sorts of fruits and veggies can be fed. The fruits you can feed them are apples, pears, berries, mango, papaya, banana, grapes, oranges, tangerines, tangelos. The veggies you could feed them are whole baby carrots (something they can play with), cucumbers, zucchini, red peppers and chilies, even dandelion and chickweed (make sure they are not sprayed with pesticides). Gonzo loves all nuts, though Amazons are known to get obese from fatty food, he also has an indulgence for tortilla chips and ramen noodles. DO NOT feed them avocado as it is toxic to them. Make sure they have clean and fresh water every day. Amazon's like to dunk their food, so you may have to change it a couple of times a day. That is to avoid any bacterial infections.
Cage
Their bird cage should be as followed with the cage guidelines when you are buying a cage for them. Remember twice the width, so they may spread their wings and 1 1/2 times in length for their tail. Bar spacing needs to be 5/8 inch to one inch apart. There needs to be both horizontal and vertical bars to climb around on. The cage Gonzo has is 24x20x27.
They need plenty of toys to play with. Make sure the bowls are secured to the cage because Amazons are renowned throwers. I recommend an extra bowl for treats, fruits and veggies; besides their water and food bowls.
You need to wash their food and water bowls daily. Clean their cage at least once a week, by washing everything down with water and a small amount of dish detergent. Make sure it is well rinsed off when you put your parrot back into the cage after cleaning. Their trays can become quite messy as everything goes on the floor or below them. They do not have best table manners. I like to change their trays with newspaper every time I feed them. Newspaper is nontoxic and cheap to get. I do not recommend pine saw dust or ground shells. There is a chance of getting a bacterial infection or them eating it and getting sick.
Illness
We have spoken of bacterial infections and you are wondering "How do I know if my parrot is not feeling well?" The signs can be different so watch them carefully. Watch your parrot carefully because parrots differs from one another when there are signs if illness. If their demeanor changes from lively to sullen, ruffled plumage, resting often with their head tucked into their back (keep in mind that your parrot may prefer to sleep this way), consistent sneezing (yes parrots do sneeze). Now the most noticeable ones to watch for are if they do sneeze and discharge is coming from their nostrils, cloudy eyes and any change in their droppings (feces). I recommend you to have a good avian vet specialist, who you have relationship with; that knows your parrot so you may call them after hours for any potential issues that should arise.
Gonzo
Gonzo is not caged and we do not have to be subjected to the aggression that Amazons are known for. The more your parrot is out and interacting with the family they are more likely to be friendlier and not so aggressive. Amazon's can be the most aggressive of all parrot species; however this varies from Amazon to Amazon. Our Red-Lored is one of the mildest and more adaptable to the family life than other known species. These issues can be alleviated by not caging your parrot for excessive periods of time. Gonzo is not caged; he hangs on top of his cage and playpen, watching the day goes by. This also gives him a chance for exercise and prevents the obesity Amazons are known for. Please do not keep them on their perch in the middle of their cage; as they will appear like a stuffed parrot and when approached will bring out their aggressive side.
Behavior
How your Amazon parrot behaves. Many are very loyal, like a dog. Extremely intelligent and playful; you can teach them to play basketball and roller-skate; these are typical toys that can be purchased. They are outstanding talkers and yes, even sing opera. Amazon parrots love classical and traditional anthem music. Keep in mind that each species of parrots are individualistic and have differences, so you may get an Amazon parrot who does not sing or talk. In our case, our Red-Lored does not sing nor talk, but is fantastic just the way he is. Never get a parrot expecting it to talk, get it because you want a lifelong companion. Amazon parrots are great screamers and vocalization, not as loud as a cockatoo or macaw though. They can be quite noisy at times, especially when the sun comes up and goes down. When it is breeding season and they hit puberty, about 5 or 6 though it could be later, they can turn into Jekyll and Hyde. Ride it out, this your companion you made, it is a commitment to for life.
youtube
Amazon parrot loves to bathe with a mister or in the shower, it is fun time and it can be quite comical. Their world is about playing. May it be with food to the toys in their cage; they see the world as an adventure playground.
Keeping this all in mind; you will have a happy family when you understand your new found companion and their idiosyncrasies. Gonzo is everything that one that anyone could ever ask for. He is beautiful, great disposition in life and shows us how to take one day at a time. We are grateful for Gonzo; hopefully after you have done all your research and made that commitment as to what kind of parrot you decided on, you have decided on an Amazon parrot.
Peter has four very proud parrot species from all over the world. We have lived with our four parrots for over 15 years. All of our parrots are domestically born. The joy we share with them is immeasurable.

Dig a Little, Dream a Lot
By Cynthia Brian
“Be at War with your Vices, at Peace with your Neighbours, & let every New-Year find you a better Man.” Benjamin Franklin
Resolutions, goals, a fresh start. Does January bring out your best efforts in wishful thinking as you embark on a new year or do you have the stamina and mindfulness to actually fulfill your gardening dreams? The famous English gardener and writer, Vita Sackville-West, wrote: “The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.” Although Vita died in 1962, her gardens at Sissinghurst survive as a national treasure, thriving with seasonal beauty and tender care from volunteers. I was fortunate enough to travel the grounds last year and marvel, even in the rain, at the expanse of her horticultural involvement. Vita’s quote definitely describes my personal gardening mantra as my motto has always been “Failure is fertilizer. Throw the mistake on the compost pile to grow a new garden.” In other words, mistakes, or malfattis as we say in Italian are always an experiment in something new…and maybe even a better creation. I don’t rest on my bay laurels but keep on striving.
One of my favorite global excursions is to visit gardens everywhere I travel. Exploring gardens, great and small, is a wonderful way to expand one’s horticultural intelligence while gathering ideas for one’s own plot. At the top of my resolution list for 2017 I’ve designated garden hopping as a must-do. In the past few weeks, I’ve had numerous emails from readers of this column with questions, comments, and aspirations as well as ambitious dreams for gardening in 2017. Here are ideas you may wish to employ this year as you dig a little and dream a lot!
⎫ Get your children and grandchildren engaged in gardening activities. Virtues, skills, and life itself are learned in the garden. ⎫ Be brave. Experiment more. Worry less. There are no brown thumbs. ⎫ Plant more seeds to watch the wonder of sprouting. ⎫ Grow more vegetables and herbs in your pots or potager for a healthier plant to plate palate. Consume, share, preserve to eliminate waste. ⎫ Photograph your garden often and keep records of what blooms when, what works where, and what you want to edit. ⎫ Install a water-saving irrigation system. ⎫ Donate extra produce to a food bank. ⎫ When time is limited, hire help. ⎫ Compost, compost, compost. (see composting recipe below) ⎫ Visit botanical gardens wherever you travel. ⎫ Encourage pollinators to take up residence by planting and offering habitat that attract them. Birds, bees, bats, hummingbirds, and butterflies are precious protectors. ⎫ Eliminate insecticides and pesticides. Research companion planting. ⎫ Mulch more to reduce weeds, keep the soil warm or cool depending on the weather, and stop soil erosion. ⎫ Take a class to expand your knowledge. ⎫ Be more realistic. ⎫ Find interesting outdoor accents to use in the landscape like vintage windows, doors, or Victorian gazing balls. ⎫ Add one or more water elements. ⎫ Start saving special seeds. ⎫ Propagate from cuttings. ⎫ Plant a garden or pots in a patio for the first time. ⎫ Add a new rosebush. ⎫ Plant a cutting garden for creating beautiful bouquets year round. ⎫ Sow a path of fragrance with lavender, jasmine, honeysuckle, or other sweet-smelling shrubs. ⎫ Become more aware of the natural world by paying attention to the sounds, smells, and sights. ⎫ Make your garden drought tolerant with succulents. ⎫ Resolve to utilize organic gardening methods. ⎫ Begin keeping a journal of your outdoor endeavors. ⎫ Use tropical plants indoors as air purifiers as well as décor focal points. ⎫ Enjoy your garden more, slave less. Spend at least 15 minutes every day admiring your beautiful handiwork in conjunction with nature.
Since getting in shape or losing weight is the number one New Year’s resolution that is rarely kept, remember that gardening provides an excellent workout with the digging, tilling, weeding, raking, mowing, moving, planting, and climbing. Plus gardening is great fun. My hope for you is that you will adopt one or more of these tips as your gardening promise for the year. Be enterprising. Do things better than you ever did before. Be optimistic. Be the STAR you are.
As we take a moment to reflect on the past and look forward to the future, share your gardening dreams for 2017. Email me, [email protected].
Cynthia Brian’s Garden Guidelines for January ⎫ Compost Recipe: Keep a bucket with a lid on it in the garage or other storage area to fill with your kitchen scraps, shredded newspaper, coffee grinds, tea bags, fish bones (no meat products), and egg shells. Dump daily in an outdoor bin or pile. Add leaves and other brown materials, grass and plant clippings, and garden waste. Keep moist. Turn often with a spade or pitchfork. When the material looks and feels like a damp chocolate cake mix with an aroma of the earth, spread in your beds. ⎫ With the flu and colds that seem to be ubiquitous, make sure to keep lots of citrus on hand, especially oranges and lemons which have a high concentration of vitamin C, citric acid, calcium, iron, fiber, and B complex vitamins. Squeeze lemon juice on salads, vegetables, meat, and, of course, in your water to keep you hydrated. Even cut flowers benefit from drops of lemon juice in the vase, helping the water to travel from the stems to the flowers. Scatter the peels on any acid loving plants in your garden including roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, and fuchsias as a natural fertilizer. ⎫ It’s time to do your heavy pruning on your roses. Cut out any dead wood. Prune roses to about knee height. Although many people assume that roses are fussy, they really are quite tolerant providing months of luscious blooms. ⎫ Buy and plant bare-root roses, berries, vines, and fruit trees now following the instructions on the packaging. ⎫ Spray an application of dormant spray on peaches and other fruit trees to kill overwintering insects. ⎫ Peruse catalogues for ideas for spring and summer flowers. ⎫ Make fragrant potpourri from cut flowers.

Cynthia Brian’s Gardening Guide for January https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1022/January-Gardening-Guide-Season-Greenings-for-the-New-Year.html
Season’s Greenings By Cynthia Brian
“Winter is in my head, but eternal spring is in my heart!” Victor Hugo
The festivities of holidays are almost over, winter has arrived, and our hills are once again the lush emerald that we, and the cattle adore. Congratulate yourself on a year well-spent growing your own food and tending to your plants. Now it is time to put your gardens to bed and give yourself a bit of respite. With the colder weather, we are fortunate that lemons, grapefruit, and tangelos are ripe to help us stay healthy.
There is still time to plant bulbs through the end of January for a late spring show. All bulbs need well-drained soil, full sun, or partial shade. Avoid planting in soggy soils where the bulbs will rot. Instead of lining bulbs up in a row, scatter them in clusters for a more natural look. Since deer, squirrels, raccoons, and rabbits enjoy eating many bulb flowers, experiment with planting narcissus cultivars, snowflakes, and snow drops (galanthus) as these repel the critters with their toxicity.
Speaking of critters, our readers enjoyed the article on keeping unwanted guests from taking refuge in homes. From the response, it is apparent that this season of green has indeed brought the rodents to our doorsteps in increasing numbers. Excellent advice came to me from Jenny Papka of Native Bird Connections. With her permission, I am printing her edited suggestions here: “What you term as "vermin" actually misleads people, since rodents, skunks, wasps and even mosquitoes are necessary in Nature. Yes they are annoying in many cases, but it is important to be respectful of why they can actually be good. Rodents are like chocolate for almost all young wild animals, and often are a life-long food source for many. The advice given about getting rid of ivy, etc is helpful, yet other animals will also be impacted. For example, Barn owls nest in palm trees, especially the dead frond areas just under the green crown. Barn owls are the BEST rodent controllers around and other than applauding their presence we do not have to do anything. Obviously we don't want rodents inside our houses or out buildings, yet annihilation is not ideal for anyone. The advice listed is excellent particularly about what we are responsible for doing around our houses.
In Contra Costa County, skunks are officially considered rabies vectors. This is NOT true in other counties. Obviously caution should always be utilized but seeing a skunk, even in the daytime, does not automatically indicate that it is sick. Skunks are omnivores and will eat many of the bothersome creatures we dislike, snails, slugs, rodents, fruit, and yellow jacket larvae. Skunks look for mates in early spring (Feb usually) otherwise they are solitary and crepuscular. So most of the year they are not obvious. This year is a "rebound year" as well, especially for rodents since last year was so dry. The rain this year promises more grass/food so rodents are producing large families. Information and education really increases tolerance and better, more humane choices. Thank you for a good article.”
Jenny also mentioned that it is illegal (and inhumane) to trap and relocate any wildlife. She also does not suggest acquiring cats as rodent control because cats are responsible for the deaths of millions of birds daily, another contentious subject.
Other ways to eliminate the rodents is to install barn owl boxes to encourage owls to your yard. Areas with heavy Great horned owl presence usually will not support barn owl populations (Great horned eat barn owls) but any owl is good for rodent control. Native Bird Connections has boxes available at Wild Birds Unlimited in Pleasant Hill for a $100 donation. Also of importance is to not use the sticky traps as they can entangle other animals creating suffering and a lingering death. Ninety percent of wildlife in the San Francisco Bay Area has rodenticides in their tissues including coyotes, bobcats, and foxes according to WildCare in Marin. This means that the use of poisons for all applications move through the food chain and should be avoided. My advice is to contact Vector Control at 925-771-6142 or visit www.ContraCostaMosquito.com when you have questions or concerns.
Enjoy the cold nights, the rainy days, and the season’s greening. Thanks for allowing me to be your gardening guide on the side. Get ready for great new year of horticultural joys.
Cynthia Brian’s January New Year Gardening Tips:
⎫ BRING health inside with power plants of ferns, palms, spider plants, and other air-cleansing specimens. Tropical houseplants absorb indoor toxins and add humidity to the air saving you dollars on heating. ⎫ BUY a copy of “Great Garden Quotes”, a coloring book with wit, wisdom, and heart from the editors of GreenPrints, the Weeders Digest. Pat Stone, the editor, was a co-author with me on Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul. You’ll love this new coloring book with inspiring garden axioms. www.GreenPrints.com ⎫ ALLOW the organic matter of chopped leaves and lawn clippings to decompose on the soil during the dormant season. ⎫ ADD a cover crop to keep soil healthy, avoid erosion, and help with fertility. ⎫ PICK Meyer lemons and use for juicing, cooking, and baking. This rich citrus will help fend off colds. ⎫ PROTECT tender plants from frost by covering with burlap or cloth. Do not use plastic as it will maximize the freeze. ⎫ PRUNING for dormant fruit trees and shrubs begins this month. ⎫ TIDY your yard by cutting back your chrysanthemums to six inches above the ground, and removing dead foliage from plants. ⎫ SPRAY your peach trees with a concoction of fixed copper or lime sulfur after all the leaves have fallen from the tree to control peach leaf curl. Repeat this process in late January and February for best results. ⎫ PLANT bareroot stock such as grapes, berries, artichokes, roses, and several fruit trees. ⎫ PRUNE roses, vines, and berry bushes to encourage new growth. ⎫ CUT bouquets of geranium flowers for indoors and snip pieces to plant in other areas. ⎫ DONATE $100 to Native Bird Connections and receive an owl box for your garden. ⎫ REMOVE all ornaments, lights, and tinsel from your Christmas trees before placing on the curb for composting pick-up. ⎫ EXPRESS gratitude for all the green that nature is bestowing on us!
