Everything You Need to Know About Auto Fold Standing Wheelchairs
Introduction:-
Ever wish you could get up on your own in your wheelchair? Well, now you can with an auto fold standing wheelchair. An automatic standing wheelchair gives you independence and mobility with the push of a button. No more struggling to stand up or relying on others to help you get in and out of your chair. These innovative chairs are designed to do the work for you.
In just a few seconds, an auto fold standing wheelchair can lift you from a seated position to an upright stance. Using powerful lift motors and a sturdy yet lightweight frame, the chair gently raises you to a standing position and then folds up the seat behind your legs. When you're ready to sit back down, it slowly lowers you back into the seat. How's that for freedom and convenience?
With different models offering various seat sizes, weight capacities and range of motion, there are auto fold standing wheelchairs to suit most anyone's needs. And the best part? Many major insurance plans cover at least part of the cost. So if you're ready to stand up for yourself, it might be time to look into an auto fold standing wheelchair. Independence and mobility are just a push of a button away.
What Is an Automatic Folding Wheelchair?
An automatic folding wheelchair, also known as an auto fold standing wheelchair, is a powered wheelchair with the ability to automatically fold for storage or transport. These wheelchairs give the user mobility and independence, while also being easy to pack up and move around.
How Do They Work?
Auto fold wheelchairs operate electronically. At the push of a button, the wheelchair will automatically fold itself by:
The backrest folding down onto the seat
The armrests swinging in
The footrests folding up against the seat
The wheels moving in to make the folded chair more compact
The automated folding sequence allows the chair to collapse into a very small, space-efficient size that's easy to store in a closet, car trunk or under a bed when not in use.
Who Can Benefit?
People with limited mobility or dexterity can benefit greatly from an auto fold wheelchair. The automated folding feature means the user does not have to bend, lift or manipulate the chair themselves to pack it up. This includes individuals with conditions like:
Muscular dystrophy
Multiple sclerosis
Spinal cord injuries
Severe arthritis
ALS
An auto fold standing wheelchair provides powered mobility along with the convenience of automated folding for simple storage and transport. For many users, this combination offers unprecedented freedom and independence.
Key Features and Benefits of Auto Fold Standing Wheelchairs
Auto fold standing wheelchairs offer many useful features that provide independence and convenience.
Adjustable Seat Height
The seat height can be adjusted to suit your needs, allowing you to raise or lower yourself to a comfortable level for various activities. This means you can position yourself at a standard chair height for dining or at a higher level to reach cabinets and shelves.
Folding and Storage
These wheelchairs fold up compactly for transporting in a vehicle or storing when not in use. The backrest, armrests, and footrests fold flat while the wheels can be easily removed. This collapsible design makes them ideal if you have limited space.
Standing Function
A key benefit is the ability to move into an upright standing position at the push of a button. Standing provides both physical and psychological benefits, including improved circulation, bone and muscle health, and enhanced independence and quality of life. The seat, backrest, armrests and footplate move together to gently lift you into a secure standing position.
Safety and Support
These wheelchairs are designed with your safety, comfort and well-being in mind. They feature sturdy but lightweight aluminum frames, padded seats and backrests, flip-back armrests, and adjustable footplates. Chest straps, lap belts and padded knee supports provide extra support and security when standing. Anti-tippers prevent the risk of tipping backwards.
Customization
Many options are available to customize an auto fold standing wheelchair to your needs and preferences. You can choose from different seat widths and depths, backrest heights, armrest styles, wheel types (manual or powered), and accessories like oxygen tank holders, trays, lights and cushions for maximum comfort.
With these useful features and custom options, auto fold standing wheelchairs provide mobility, independence and an improved quality of life. They give you the freedom to easily change positions from sitting to standing, move around freely, and participate more fully in daily activities.
Conclusion
So there you have it, everything you need to know about automatic folding wheelchairs. These innovative mobility devices can give you so much freedom and independence. While the upfront cost may seem high, the long term benefits to your health, happiness and quality of life are huge. Do some research on different brands and models to find what features are most important to you. Then take one for a spin - you'll quickly see why so many people love the convenience and versatility of a power chair that can lift you up to standing height and fold up compactly when not in use. @wheelie-butch replied to your post:
Do u have any miranda wheelchair design thoughts bc i have half an idea that i want to do wheelchair redesigns for the main ROs at some point 🤔🤔
okay so this is going to be primarily about my personal merfolk redesigns because this is where my thoughts are, so this is what i've been chewing on
also disclaimer that i am not an engineer and still need to put WAY more thought into this
the design is mostly based off of dog wheelchairs, as the best example i can find of a wheelchair designed primarily for quadrupeds. the wheels sit under the hips and are designed to be level with the arms, which are used as the primary means of locomotion, and thus connect up to the chest to provide support. there's a seat beneath the hips/stomach (more on that), and would have footrests for the back legs.
for most there'd probably be a latching mechanism activated either by reaching back with the arms or by pushing with the feet (as merfolk feet can act as somewhat less dexterous hands), to let the wheels back to sit closer to the tail, allowing the merfolk to sit and lay down, and some kind of wench to pull it back into position.
this is far from my full design for several reasons, the biggest of which is: merfolk spines move from side to side, and there's a lot more side to side motion their wheelchairs would need to be designed for to handle the movement of them walking. this is why there are bars by the tail - the tail is large, and drags on the ground, and moves side to side, which could interfere with the wheels, so the addition of bars limits the movement the very base of the tail does.
there's also the issue of their legs. pulling them up like this would be most comfortable for the merfolk, but it also puts them right next to the wheels, with a high risk of getting caught. add in the fact that there's a membrane of skin/scales/cartilage/fat/Meat that runs down their limbs to smooth them out for hydrodynamics, and getting caught would be an issue enough that there should probably be a shield between the legs and wheels. another option would be leg binding, which is pulling the legs back and binding them to the tail, based off of a practice that some merfolk do for fashion, but this could have circulation issues, be less comfortable, remove the possibility for control with their feet, and limit their ability to lay down and sit.
here i've also added a very large seat for the abdomen and hips, which could probably use to be smaller for some other merfolk. for miranda's uses, however, she'd need a larger seat that supports her stomach, because the reason that she needs a wheelchair would be a long-term strain injury caused by walking on land, especially the bad habit that she has of walking bipedally. merfolk aren't designed to be bipeds, or be very terrestrial at all, anymore, and part of this issue for miranda is the gastralia in her stomach starting to come detached and pull away from where it sits parallel to the spine. this would provide relief and an additional way to support that weight for miranda, and so it's what i included, through it'd probably also limit movement and the ability to sit.
additional things would be that there almost certainly needs to be some strap or securing over the back to prevent the merfolk from falling out, and thinking about how they would secure things like the chest harness. to be fair, most things merfolk make are created with the presumption that there will be another merfolk there to help them regardless, so limited movement of the user to secure themselves wouldn't be as much of a concern to a merfolk than otherwise. they'd probably be able to get in by moving up from behind and laying down into the wheelchair, fixing on the chest harness, and then adjusting any straps across the back.
why yes i am a “miranda and aaravi both are chronically ill” truther
#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#miravi.txt#wheelie-butch#monster prom#miranda vanderbilt#hi this has way too much thought put into it#unsurprisingly there's. not really any good options for wheelchairs for crocodiles. alas.#you could also maybe lose the chest harness altogether? but that might lose pull power and stability#overall this isnt the kind of thing you can use your hands with but. yaknow.#that wouldnt be specific to merfolk in a wheelchair itd just be a merfolk-on-land overall issue#art#digital art

hi! i was looking through the cpunk tag & i saw your chair paint job (looks really cool btw!!!). any advice on making a transport chair more comfortable? (since that's what it looks like you have) cheers!! :)
Hey, thank you! :) Im really proud of the paint job!
Im not totally sure that I have a transport chair, mine is sorta in-between a transport chair and a lightweight one I think, but that said it totally had some really clunky and uncomfortable pieces when I first got it. It had like those super big and awkwardly angled foot rests, anti tip bars, and some really big/in the way arm rests with clothing guards. Mine were removable, but I know that not all chairs have removable pieces like that so I'll add some advice for chairs like that at the end.
So the FIRST thing I'd say to do is find some wrenches, screwdrivers, tools, and/or somebody that can help you take pieces off. At least for my chair, all of those were removable with a little work. I used a wrench to take off the arm rests and clothing guard completely which is 100% more comfortable since I could actually reach the wheels and pushrims. I unscrewed the anti tip bars because they were low enough to the ground that they got caught on things and prevent wheelies. I completely took off the entire footrests.
If you take pieces off though you have to diy some sort of foot rest because just letting your feet hang there is almost worse than the footrests. I chose to drill holes in the frame behind the castors (the small front wheels) and attach a sort of thick cord to it, about 1-2 inches wide. Like you know that super thick/durable part of backpack straps? That's basically what I used but you could use leather, tough rubber, or pretty much anything strong but flexible. Car mats, welcome mats, or thick rugs would probably all work, whatever you have laying around or could get at walmart. Make sure that the footrest fits your personal height pretty close, and you'd definetly rather it be too high than too low imo. Also test out how well your castor wheels rolls with it before permanently commiting to anything because a diy footrest can get it the way and it might take a few different tries to get it right
I'd also definetly recommend getting some kind of cushion because if you have feeling in your legs and butt they will go numb or hurt. Wheelchair cushions are expensive and covers for them are also expensive, not to mentioned that they don't last very long if you're using your chair a lot. Im really lucky that my insurance covered one when they covered the chair, but some cheap alternatives would be like throw/decorative pillows or furniture cushions. I'd also get a cushion for your back if you can, like a lumbar support one. Cheap options for that might be one thats made for desk work or jobs with a lot of sitting instead of wheelchair specific ones.
You can (usually) also adjust specific parts of the chair, like the center of gravity, how low the castors are, how high the big wheels are and some other stuff. I didn't adjust anything on mine because it fits my height and ability for the most part, but I am thinking about messing with the center of gravity. It's easy to do though, you just unscrew/unwrench the pieces, put the in the other holes and rescrew/rewrench them in place. It might take a few different tries to get them set the way that's more comfortable for you
If your pieces don't detach, put padding on anything that puts pressure on your body, seriously I can't stress that enough. If you use your chair a lot and have metal pressing against your body, it will cause sores and pain and possibly bruising if you bruise easily. Put a tiny pillow at your sides, find a way to attach some foam padding, or whatever you can do, just take that pressure off.
And last one, if you have a high backrest/push handles, mess around with your posture and how you sit in the chair. I personally am the most comfortable with one leg tucked under the other and leaning more forward so that my shoulders don't repeatedly hit against the push handles. Find what posture and sitting position feels the most comfortable, even if that takes some experimenting.
I hope that wasn't too rambly and that it helped, goodluck on making your chair more comfortable!

I hired a wheelchair
Or, Wheeeeeeeeee! (-lchair)
~
Some of this will be quite UK-specific, but lots of it is universal.
Here’s some things I learned, in no particular order!
Get cycling gloves first. I knew I’d need them but I didn’t have a chance to get them in advance and like, just do it. I ended up with a sort of hole/blister on the squishy bit at the base of my right thumb after a day of fairly minimal self-wheeling and being pushed around, and putting on cycling gloves was an immediate relief. Get gloves first and then you don’t have to be pushed around because you have blisters on your hands! Get ones that have fingers so your hands stay pretty clean and stuff. When you’re pushing yourself along by something that goes through puddles and over all kinds of floor-mank, your hands get grubby.
You’re gonna go through cycling gloves pretty fast! They were pretty worn down even after two days. I guess they’re kind of like socks on hardwood floors, or ballet slippers.
After a while you get good at putting the brakes on and off automatically and without having to look, so that’s cool.
All pavements slope towards the road for drainage, in a way that is not obvious at all when you’re walking, but when you’re noob-wheelchairing and one arm is knackered and doing all the work to stop you heading into the road it is really obvious.
Councils think they have made pavement kerbs wheelchair accessible but, I mean, they are not always that great, let’s be honest.
You won’t have enough arm strength and stamina to do what you want to do and go where you want to go without assistance for a while probably? I would push myself a bit, and then when I got tired I would ask Jay to push me a bit, and we’d alternate like that. I was usually slower than Jay, but I did get a bit faster, especially after we took the arm rests off.
At least when you’ve only been doing it a few days, it takes twice as long to get anywhere than you think it will, or more.
Take the arm rests off. They get in the way, you have to hold your arms at a funny angle that stops you getting your strength behind the push, you can't get the best grip on the wheel thingy, and you get tired faster. (Kate found a button that let us pull the armrests off the one I hired and it was great.) If possible, ask the hire people to remove the arm rests for you so you don’t have to worry about them.
Someone needs to invent a periscope so that the person pushing the wheelchair and the person in the wheelchair can see each other. Otherwise you both just feel really weird and impersonal and a bit isolated.
Similarly, when you’re being pushed and then there’s a pause, if there are people with you and they don’t come around to the front of the wheelchair and they just stay behind you that is really weird! So I had to get good at saying stuff like “can you come around this side of the wheelchair?” (if I had not got cycling gloves yet) or just turning around myself. It took a while for my “just turn the wheelchair around” instinct to kick in, I did a lot of twisting and craning for no good reason! :P After a while of being pushed I think inertia happened and I forgot I could move myself. (Another reason I preferred pushing myself, I think.)
Being able to put your stuff on the back of the wheelchair is great, but it does make pushing harder, especially on upward slopes. If you go up quite a steep slope without someone pushing you it feels like you’re going to tip over backwards. (Thankfully this did not happen to me!)
Going downhill is fun.
I was alarmed by everything being so high up in supermarkets, so I just got out and pushed the empty wheelchair around in front of me and put all my shopping in it. It’s kinda nice because it gives you something to lean on a bit while you’re walking.
The world is my bench.
I still wanted to get up and stretch and whatnot every now and again, and that was pretty cool because I was often with someone who appreciated a bit of a sit down in a convenient wheelchair, and maybe a bit of a push around too. So I stretched and pushed someone in a wheelchair for a bit and then sat down again, and they got to have a rest, and it was good.
Another nice thing about needing to stretch is that “do you want to have a go in the wheelchair?” is a great ice-breaker.
If you can get out of your wheelchair and lift it up small steps, you probably don’t need help from train assistance people with that portable ramp kerfuffle.
It was so nice to be like “wow being still is boring, let’s wander around and look at things while I wait” and not be like “that’s going to hurt and make my recovery take longer and severely reduce what I can do today etc.” I wasn’t invisibly trapped in space any more, I could just... go 10 feet over there and look at the newspapers, for no reason, just because! And nothing bad would happen! Incredible. It’s hard to really understand how disabled you are until you have something that takes away your problem. (Sometimes it gives you new problems but like, at least you’ve got the choice, right?) I had no idea that other people can just walk around, for no reason, just because it’s more interesting than not moving around, and there are no bad side effects - and in fact it usually feels nice and good and enhances your life to do so.
It’s also cool because I would like to be able to go to active things (gym? dancing?) and then be able to wheel myself home. At the moment if I do anything active outside of my house I am essentially trapped. One time I got a gym subscription from my GP and by the time I got to the gym I was feeling so bad that I had to go right back home or I would’ve been trapped. If I have a wheelchair then I can do LOTS on my legs and then let my arms take me home while the chair supports my weight! Which could mean that it’s possible for my legs to get stronger with a wheelchair than without, paradoxically.
It’s now two days since I gave back the wheelchair, and I am feeling it in my chest and the front of my shoulders and my upper back and upper arms. Not in a bad way, I can still do stuff, but it’s just the feeling of my muscles breaking down and rebuilding. I feel very lucky that I had someone to push me when my arms got tired, because without that my arms and chest and back would be on fire right now. It’s also amazing to feel like I’ve exerted myself and used my muscles, without the feeling that I’ve totally broken myself??? I can’t even remember a time when I’ve felt like that, because the gap between resting and “oops I’ve overdone it” is so so tiny for me usually! The fact that I have used all those muscles so much over several days and I’m not totally broken is just, wow.
~
The cost
It cost me £40 to hire a wheelchair for 4-5 days, and that was because the minimum charge was like 2 weeks or something? I paid less because I picked it up from the hire company office instead of having it delivered, which is apparently the standard. It was VERY lucky that the place I was staying was reasonably close to the hire company office, though.
I took the velcro foot straps off the wheelchair and then lost them and had to pay £10 extra, so like, look after the bits you take off!
~
Things I am looking forward to from an actually good for me wheelchair
Rigid frame. The folding wheelchair frame jiggles about all over the place, and it feels like half my effort at any given moment is rattling out through the joints (of my wheelchair and my body!).
Smaller front wheels? The little ones that help you turn were still just too big. They kept crashing into my feet on the footrest if I went backwards a bit and whatnot.
CUSTOMISING. That’s self-explanatory. I’m thinking embroidered things on the back, and maybe lights on my wheels? >:D Also if there is a good way to carry things easily (pockets? panniers?) then I want it.
Lighter. At least, that’s what I’ve heard? It sounds nice, sometimes I felt like an absolute unit with the backpack on and everything, so every kg helps.
Being a bit higher up maybe or something? I felt quite recumbent in this wheelchair, but when I think of other wheelchairs I’ve seen people using it’s like, your centre of gravity is a bit further up/forward, and that looks more comfortable and like you can use your body strength a bit better.
Overall I just got a feel for how these kinds of standard one-size-fits-all wheelchairs are designed for being pushed around, rather than comfortably wheeling yourself around on the regular. I wanna get a nice cushion and then maybe start going for wheels along cycle paths in the countryside. :)
~
The Jassian??? (Is that what we called it?)
This is a move that me and Jay have patented.
You’re crossing a road and you’re coming up to a dropped kerb on the other side of the road that isn’t all that dropped, and the usual solution is to get out of the wheelchair and then the pusher gets it up onto the pavement and then you sit back down again.
But that’s slowwww and you have to stand uppppp and it just sort of breaks up an otherwise smooth thing, right?
So if the person in the chair puts their feet on the ground behind the footrests and pushes down, the front of the chair lifts up just enough that you can get the front wheels onto the pavement. And then you quickly pick your feet up and put them on the footrests again, so you don’t stub your toes on the kerb, and you’re sorted!
It’s like, hup!
Edit: I’ve since found out from people with training and/or experience that the good way is to turn around and go up the bump backwards, because the big wheels can handle it better, but the Jassian technique is better because you don’t have to go backwards, in my opinion.

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 43: Improvement
Rocket woke up early the next day and arrived at the nursing home. Azrik successfully got Groot up and ready for the day. As soon as Rocket exited the elevator on Groot’s floor, Azrik could be seen pushing Groot in his wheelchair, which was tilted to make him more comfortable, out of the transitional housing unit and over to Rocket.
“Hey, Groot!” Rocket greeted his son as they approached the raccoon at the elevator. Groot was happy to see his dad and squealed in delight. “Where are you off to today?”
“Well, Groot has to go for his checkup today.” Azrik reminded Rocket as he pushed Groot closer to the elevator so that he could press the button to go down. “You can come along too if you want.”
“Of course.” Rocket replied as the elevator arrived and they went in. “Groot’s my son. I’d do anything for him.” The doors then closed and Azrik pushed Groot over to the inside panel so that he could push the button to the first floor.
After they reached the first floor, Azrik left Groot and Rocket near one of the many sitting areas in the lobby so that he could get the keys to the nursing home’s only accessible van. But he returned empty-handed.
“Where’s the keys?” Rocket asked.
“I’m sorry, but the van is currently out of service. It has an oil leak.” Azrik answered. “But I was able to call for a taxi that an accessible vehicle that we can take Groot in. It should be here in five minutes.” He added as they went outside to wait for the taxi.
Five minutes later, the taxi did come. The driver greeted them before opening up the side door and deploying a lift so that Groot could get on. Azrik backed Groot’s chair onto the lift and applied the brake. The driver then got out a remote control and made the lift go up until it was level with the floor of the van. Azrik then undid the brake to Groot’s wheelchair and the taxi driver positioned Groot in the space in the van that was cleared out for his chair. The driver reapplied the brake when Groot’s chair was situated correctly and he attached the restraints to the tie-down points that were built in to Groot’s chair. He tested the tautness of the straps by gently shaking the sides of Groot’s chair and tightening them until there was no give.
It was time to get Groot buckled into the van. He didn’t like the shoulder and lap seat belts that he had to wear in addition to all of the other buckles already on him, but with some coaxing from Rocket, Groot calmed down and allowed himself to be buckled in.
After a fifteen minute drive, they arrived at the emergency care facility. The taxi driver got Groot unbuckled and out of the van. Azrik then paid for the ride and he and Rocket brought Groot inside to the waiting room and signed him in for his appointment. They only had to wait five minutes before they were called back and escorted to an exam room.
“Hey, guys.” Cre’Nok greeted them warmly. He then looked at Groot who squeaked as he tried to wave his hand. “Hi, Groot.” He was pleased with how Groot looked compared to the last time he saw him. “Groot’s looking good. How long has he been out of the stretcher and in his wheelchair?”
“He started therapy the day after he came back to the nursing home and his therapists saw that he was doing so well with his exercises that they decided to reward him and he wanted to go on the swing that was in the room. They weren’t so sure that he could do it because he can’t sit up by himself without support, but they used some foam bolsters that we had laying around to help Groot sit up in the swing. We then saw that he showed no discomfort while sitting up and decided that he was ready for his chair.”
“We’re surprised by the improvement that he’s made since the last time we saw him.” Xalani stated as she took off Groot’s lap tray and undid his arm and foot straps. She then moved the footrests out of the way so that Groot’s legs were suspended.
“Yeah, who knows? Maybe Groot’ll be on the verge of walking by his next appointment.” Cre’Nok added as he stretches Groot’s arms and legs while he was still seated in his wheelchair. “His muscle tone has increased significantly and he has better control.”
Groot was starting to get bored and lets it be known by screeching. He didn’t like to be kept waiting and wanted to get this appointment done as fast as possible and go back to the nursing home.
“Alright, alright, Groot.” Cre’Nok said as Groot quieted down. “We’ll get started.”
“Hey, Groot.” Azrik caught Groot’s attention as Rocket grabbed the handlebars of Groot’s chair that was set to his height so that he could push his son. “How about you show Cre’Nok and Xalani what else you can do.”
Groot’s attitude changes as he lets out a more content squeak before he moved his eyes to activate his talker. “I can talk to everyone now.” He then looked at Rocket and Azrik as Xalani got his feet back into the footrests and strapped them down.
“Is he okay without the lap tray?” Xalani asks Azrik as he nodded. She then placed the tray in a corner. “Does he need his arms strapped down?”
“Not necessarily.” Azrik answered. “He’s much happier when he can move his arms without them being tied down. We only use the straps for when he’s being moved long distances so that his arms don’t get caught in the wheels.” He added as Xalani placed her hands on the handlebars of Groot’s chair as Cre’Nok opened the door for her.
“Where are you taking Groot?” a concerned Rocket asked as he stod up from his seat.
“Since Groot is no longer confined to a stretcher, we don’t need to weigh him in the sling anymore and can get his weight while he’s seated in his wheelchair.” Cre’Nok told Rocket as they walked down the hallway.
“But how are you gonna weigh Groot if he can’t stand up on his own?” Rocket questioned as they arrived at a small room and Azrik opened the door.
Inside the small room there was a couple of chairs up against one wall, while there was a desk with a small desktop computer set up against another wall. The wall opposite that one had a height chart hanging in the middle of it with a standing device set to the side should the patient be unable to stand on their own. In the middle of the room was a scale that had a small ramp and a platform large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.
“Okay, Groot.” Xalani tries to rouse Groot from his tiredness with no success. “We need to get your height and weight.” Groot groaned in response. “I know, but it’ll only take five minutes and then the rest of your appointment is easy.” She then turned to Azrik. “Has his therapists worked with him on standing up?”
“No, not yet.” Azrik replied. “His therapists just got him started on a new program and he is still on step one.”
“That’s okay.” Cre’Nok said as he got out a cloth tape measure. “We can get Groot’s height this way too.” He measured Groot’s height and saw that he was still six feet tall.
“Alright, Groot, now it’s time for the next part.” Xalani nodded as she brought over a portable patient lift that was next to the standing device and began to unbuckle Groot from his chair. “But he will need to be in the sling for a minute so that we can weigh his wheelchair separately so that we can subtract that number from the total number so that we can get Groot’s official weight.” She explained as she got Groot into the sling and lifted him up. Once he was securely in the sling and out of his wheelchair, Xalani moved his chair up onto the scale and recorded the weight. “100 pounds.” She read from the display as she brought Groot’s chair underneath him and carefully lowered the sling that the teenager was in until Groot was back in his chair and buckled in. Xalani then pushed Groot up onto the platform of the scale. It took a couple of seconds to record his weight, but it came up on the display. “225 pounds, total. So that would mean that Groot now weighs 125 pounds.”
This pleased Rocket. Groot was continuing to regain the weight that he had lost. “Does, does this mean that he can have his feeding tube out today?” The raccoon asked eagerly.
“No, Rocket.” Cre’Nok answered as he placed a hand on the raccoon’s shoulder. “We want Groot to be at 150 pounds before we remove his tube. But by the Groot steadily regaining the weight like he has, he might be eligible for it to be removed by his next checkup. But not today, sadly.” He explained as they took Groot to one of the ultrasound rooms.
Once Azrik and Cre’Nok got Groot out of his chair and onto the table, Xalani brought over the ultrasound machine and began to press the wand against Groot’s belly.
Xalani, Cre’Nok, and Azrik were amazed by what they saw on the screen. They turn the screen around so Rocket could get a better look.
Rocket was perplexed by what he was looking at. “What is this?” He questioned.
“Groot’s stomach has stopped consuming the organs around it and has been only consuming the formula that he gets through his feeding tube.” Cre’Nok explained. “That’s why he’s so upbeat today. He is getting the nutrients back so that he can get the energy that he needs instead of his stomach consuming everything around it and making him so underweight and malnourished. Look even the color in his eyes and skin is starting to return.”
Rocket then looked at his son. Groot’s skin was starting to turn to a healthy tone and the bark wasn’t so brittle and delicate. Rocket couldn’t even see or feel every single bone in Groot’s body and the teenager didn’t look like he was a skeleton.
When they were finished with ultrasounding Groot’s stomach, they got him back into his wheelchair and took him down to the X-Ray room to get a look at his neck and his head. After they laid him on the table, Groot started to get a little bit scared.
“Groot, buddy.” Rocket rushed to Groot’s side in order to comfort him. “Do you want me in here with you?” Groot squeaked his approval in response as Xalani handed the raccoon the all-too-familiar child-size rocket ship lead vest that protected him from the radiation that the machine gave off.
“Groot, I have a surprise for you too!” Xalani cheerfully told the teenager as she placed a larger lead vest over top of him. It had the same rocket ship design on it. “There! Now you two are matching!” She declared as she placed an empty film in the machine before she left the room to take the X-Ray.
Groot then reached up and pointed at his father’s chest. “I know, Groot.” Rocket said as he gently stroked Groot’s cheek before he held his son’s hand and gently placed it back down by his side.
Groot then grunted and repeated the motion, tapping harder on the vest that his father wore before tapping on his own vest.
Rocket then realized what Groot is trying to say to him. “My, my name, Groot?” Rocket knelt down to his son as he held his hand. “You want to hear the story about how I got my name?”
Rocket told Groot of how he was bestowed his name by the Original Groot shortly after they escaped Halfworld once before when the teenager was a toddler, but since Groot’s accident, he probably lost the memory of how the story went, but Rocket didn’t mind telling it to him again. Rocket watched as Groot’s expressions changed as he told the story to his son.
After Groot’s X-Rays we’re finished, he was taken down to the scanning room to see how much his skull had healed. Groot wasn’t frightened as he was placed on the table and brought into the scanner, which made the process the fastest yet.
Azrik, Xalani, and Cre’Nok went into a room as soon as the scans were in to discuss what was next for Groot. As Rocket was left alone with Groot, the father talked to his son.
“Hey, Groot?” Rocket softly spoke to the teenager as Groot acknowledged him by squeaking. “No matter what happens, I’m proud of you and I love you, son.” He told Groot as he placed a hand on the teen’s cheek before he kissed his son on the forehead.
The door opened and in walked Cre’Nok, Azrik, and Xalani. They were carrying Groot’s results from his X-Rays and brain scan. Rocket looked at their faces to see if the news was good for Groot. They smiled at him.
“Rocket, we have good news for Groot.” Azrik said as Groot was more alert. “He no longer needs to wear the neck brace and he’s going to get the halo around his head removed today.”
Rocket didn’t know what to say as he just stood there by his son as Groot cheered with happiness. “How-. How soon can this happen?” Was all that he could say.
“There is a procedure room available right now, but it’ll be unavailable soon if we don’t move fast. Meaning Groot would have to go in by himself and we can’t sedate him out here because of the time constraint.” Cre’Nok informed Rocket. “Otherwise, we would have to wait until tonight and Groot would have to spend the night here.”
Rocket thought about it for a moment. “Alright. If you can get him in right now, then do it.” He agreed as he turned to his son. “Groot, I’ll be up to see you when you’re all done.”
Groot tried to wave to his father as Xalani got behind him and began to push him down to the preparation room that adjoined the procedure room in order to get him ready as Cre’Nok and Azrik followed suit and Rocket walked to the waiting room.——————————————————————————————————

Week 3
flI feel much more comfortable with everyone at Paraquad now. I am remembering more names and people now also recognize my face or my name.
One of the clients walked in today, greeting me with a vibrant “hi Joy!”. He then requested that I help him get set up in the NuStep machine. It was a special moment for me that he not only remembered my name but even trusted me to help him set up (a mere undergraduate without any OTA/OT training out of a group of 4 trained OT/OTAs). Though it was my first time setting up the machine, he was very patient in guiding me through every step. That sense of patience permeates through the gym. Everyone is very accepting, helpful and welcoming.
I also gained stronger understanding of various machines today.
This is the NuStep machine that I learned how to set-up today. It is used for a full body cardio and strength workout. Here are the steps to set-up: 1. Get the leg stabilizer (varies in sizes that can be distinguished by the length of the velcro straps) and stick them into the hole underneath the seat. 2. Have client transfer from wheelchair to the seat. 3. Move client’s feet into the footrest and tighten the foot straps. 4. Bring up the leg stabilizer and strap it around the client’s thighs. 5. Put a pillow between the back of the seat and the client if preferred Another machine I learned to set up today is the Standing Frame.
This machine is used to support people with spinal cord injuries to stand so that their risk for osteoporosis can be reduced. It is important to slowly lower or lift yourself up when using it because blood pressure drops may occur with sudden changes in elevation. For clients who cannot hold on to the handles, Active Hands can be used to strap the hand to the handle.
While assisting a client on the standing frame, I had a lovely conversation with a client who practiced medicine and owned an OBGYN practice before their spinal cord injury. They are also African American and a member of the LGBTQ* community. Speaking with them evoked a lot of thoughts on my end regarding the intersection of various minority identities. I hope to have the opportunity to interview individuals who frequent the gym to learn more about their various identities and experiences.
Another project I am hoping to begin for myself is to conduct research on spinal cord injuries and present my findings in an intuitive and coherent design to strengthen my own understanding of the different types of injuries.
Today, I also got to observe some stretches. I learned these vocabularies and tips: 1. dorsiflexion: flex foot in upward direction 2. plantar flexion: flex foot in a downward direction (think “planting down”) 3. when stretching, always hold the proximal and distal part of the body part you are stretching (usually one hand on each) 4. slow down the stretches if muscle spasms occur 5. stretch in intervals of around 10 seconds 6. passive stretching: therapist stretches for client 7. active stretch: client stretches on their own 8. subluxation: separation of upper arm bone from the shoulder socket Finally, I read over some SOAP notes. The acronym stands for “Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan” and the notes are made in a chart to record interactions with clients. More info can be found in the linked PDF.
