Acting + Mindfulness = Awesome ✨ Yup, we're mixing things up and combining two most wondrous things to make magic; those things being performance technique and mindfulness. Truth is, much of acting is essentially mindfulness practice. When we endeavour to keep our attention on our scene partner (for that's where the inspiration is... ); when we endeavour to release thoughts that say 'what's my line what's my line (?!!) do I look okay? AM I FEELING ENOUGH?!' and to Come. Back. To. The. Moment... to be Here, let go and allow a scene to unfold... this is us practicing mindfulness. This, combined with mindfulness' capacity to help us with performance nerves, vocal clarity and a myriad of other elements of acting, makes for a combination that is wondrous. So myself and the lovely Daniel Bradford of @playwithfiremcr and @hopestudiosmcr are combining these techniques with our own wonder and making awesomeness. If you're a performer (or not) and would like to bring some mindfulness into your life, I invite you to bring attention to your breath. For all of us - and, perhaps, especially performers - it's easy to be hard on ourselves. To push for more perfection or berate ourselves for something that isn't 'going right'. But here's the thing - all is well honey, and you're doing your best. Standing on stage/in rehearsal/in front of a camera can feel highly pressurised but it'll be a whole lot easier if you allow yourself to be how you are. Ie human. Breathe sweetheart; just breathe. Notice that you're breathing. That you're a human who inhales and exhales... who feels and worries and has joy, pain and delight. Let yourself be all that you are in this Now and bring your attention to your breath. The breath will always be with you; always a tool you can use to bring yourself back to the moment where you can allow yourself to know it's okay. Today, I have three midterm papers to write. One on Greco-Roman Classicism and its corresponding aesthetics and Platonic philosophy, one on Iconology and Iconography, and the last, Immanuel Kant’s theories in aesthetics, as applied to the Italian Renaissance. My body is sore, but my brain is happy.
My relationship with exercise over the years has been capricious. Often, I will start a regimen, but not continue for more than a month or so. I was enjoying pilates on Netflix until it was no longer available. However, I did not pursue finding the program again right away. My year of gym membership was wasted on approximately a sporadic week’s worth of elliptical.
My friend, Marie, invited me to participate in a 5K. I have not gone for a run in years. I would also love to lose the weight I have packed on the past 10 years. My brother, through running, gained more confidence by shedding pounds, and ultimately making better life choices. What I have sincerely been lacking: Honest Self-Motivation.
I should not compare my body to anyone else's, for that is when I find fault in every curve. I have never been satisfied with my figure. Even when I was considered thin, there was always something I wasn't thrilled with. My partner loves all of my curves as they are, but also desires for me to be happy in my own skin.
I didn't have prominent health issues, until the Acid Reflux kicked in recently. This is primarily a challenge with my love of spicy food, and chocolate. My lethargy could also be contributed to the lack of complete nutrients in my daily habits.
My music is not being worked on at full capacity, due to my lack of energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. Depression can kick me into sloth mode on occasion. If I am stressed, I become a couch potato, binging on shows more exciting than my current situation. This cycle, I would prefer it to cease.
My brain needs my help. I am forgetting information, names, and what I did last summer. I feel equivalent to a bean bag chair. I am tiring of the phrase, "I want to, but for some reason, I am stopping myself." Why do I not want to feel better? I wish enough really meant enough to me.
Tuesday was my first session with a personal trainer in over 10 years. We talked of my knee issues, my Acid Reflux, and wanting to take part in a run. "Good form" was heard as I performed squats, curls, and presses. We took it slow, yet I felt invigorated. It's only the beginning stages. I want to keep this going, to feel well in form and mind, and to smile at myself more often.
