So you've seen her around, and maybe you're wondering... What's the deal with Puukko? Who is this mysterious moomin flooding the tags? Or maybe you're just a curious sort. Either way, this post will serve as an updated introduction!
Art by @pink-nubes ❤️
The long story short
She's my moomin oc. I've been writing about her a long while now and if you're reading this you've probably seen some art of her floating around, too!
The longer version
Along the French Riviera, a young moomin girl is raised by two parents of meager status. Her fur is brown and bristly, and she doesn't say much. They call her Pinecone on account of her shape and fur, just until she's old enough to choose a name.
As she got older, she took to working at the docks to help support her mother, who has fallen ill. Sometime after, her father makes his leave, claiming that he'd be back after he struck it rich. He had a plan, but Puukko was never quite sure if he was telling the truth or just couldn't bear to see his wife like this and support a child. He was never seen again, and soon after, her mother passed as well. She took up the name Puukko after apprenticing with a blacksmith at port around this time. She's not sure what drove her to piracy, but she spent the next many years as a pirate during piracy's golden age.
During her adventures, she encounters a young fillyjonk woman named Marion. I won't spoil too much since it's still in the works, but after duelling Marion's father in Marseille for his daughter's freedom from an arranged marriage, she received her classic scar, and earned a name as a pirate figure of legend. Edit: you can now read The Cane King's Daughter & TCKD: A Story for Another Time on my blog and on my ao3!
Marion joined up with the pirate, now known as Captain Whetstone, and spent many years adventuring with her crew. They shared a deep bond, though they never admitted to one another their feelings. Eventually, their reputation would catch up with them, and the king would no longer turn a blind eye to pirates. He issued a proclamation declaring that any and all pirates who surrendered themselves before a certain date were to be given a royal pardon for any crimes committed during their time as pirates, else they be hunted and bounties set upon them. Captain Whetstone, being a particular thorn in the side of the crown, was extended one mercy beyond the pardon that she did not initially accept. Her crew was captured, and Marion along with them, She was to turn herself in or they would all be tried and likely executed. She struck a deal, albeit by force, claiming that any illegal acts committed during the course of "negotiations" would be pardoned alongside her crimes as a pirate.
They sentenced her to punishment by transportation, and had her swear an oath to never board a ship again. She was sent away, and her crew was given their freedom. She found herself in the west, wild as at was at the time, and attempted to make a new life for herself. This was short-lived, and eventually she found herself where she is today.
These days, she's back to calling herself Puukko, and lives in a moominhouse of her own high in the lonely mountains. She plies her trade as a blacksmith, telling stories of the old days and occasionally stopping by down in the valley and elsewhere. She's an old woman now, and rather delights in that fact. She's a little odd and eccentric, but who isn't in moominvalley?
Okay, but why is she brown? Moomin fur is white!
Quite clever, dear reader, and I'm glad you asked! You see, Puukko is a winter creature. A winter moomin, to be specific. What does this mean? Well, you remember this fellow here:
The Ancestor. To my knowledge, they appear in every adaptation of The Moomins (this one's from the 2019 Moominvalley), and I believe every time it's mentioned that they slept in stovepipes. Here's where I diverge from canon and into speculation.
I headcanon that moomins as a species, upon becoming too big to sleep in stovepipes, began sleeping in large huddles to disguise themselves as snow mounds in winter and keep warm. Instead of joining the moominpile as it were, some of them stayed awake during the winter and retained their fluffy brown Ancestor-like fur, but otherwise similarly developed more moomin features. Winter moomins have thick brown fur, are taller and wider than your average moomin, and are ill suited to summer and hot climates. Even though Puukko as a character pre-dates my watching of the 2019 series, I also really like too-tikki's description and characterization of winter creatures during the ancestor episode.
Why does her name mean "knife?"
The knife part is simple. Most folks in the valley are named after what they are, or are known for what they do. A "puukko" is a kind of Finnish general purpose knife, and I thought it well suited her character as well as fit the theme for her pirate name, Captain Whetstone. Which also has a reason, but you should read my stories to find that one out!
When I was first designing her and thinking up stories, I was watching through the 90s Moomin series again, and I had begun collecting screencaps of all the knives. Lots of folks in the valley have them in the 90s series, and they all look well made but handcrafted.
And so I figured my OC would be a blacksmith. She's the one responsible for making all the pretty little knives in Moominvalley! From there on I tried my best to suit her to canon, but at the time I had only seen the 90s series and the Riviera movie. She's grown and changed over time, and I've written lots of things about her!
That's all, folks!
Thanks for reading! If you're curious about her, or have any other questions, or just have something to say, please feel free to reach out! My ask box is always open, and anonymous asks are always on. I love talking about Puukko, and I love talking about moomins in general. It's one of my biggest passions! There's a tag directory in my pinned post (which is probably how you got here if you're not seeing this in the tag or in your dashboard feed) which should lead you to art of her (simply tagged "puukko"), stories of her (tagged "whetstone's whispers), and other information (tagged "capitan's cabin").

Dad Jaakko HCs
Here are some of @copiasmic and @zephyrone01 and my headcanons for dad Jaakko + bonus Uncle Ilmo HCs
Used to be nervous about becoming a dad (I almost always HC that the kids were an accident 😅) but quickly manages to adapt and take on the parental role with his ex out of the picture
Charline and Charlie used to try and braid Jaakko's beard when they were young. Hair clips and flowers would be the next thing they'd add to his beard
Baby Charlie always wanted to chew on Jaakko's beard and the poor lad is reminded of this by his dad almost every birthday
Jaakko cried when the twins were born
Jaakko liked doing arts and crafts with the kids (painting, wood work, origami of animals in the area)
Ilmo would teach them about local wildlife
Uncle Ilmo would let the kids 'drive' a tractor or something. As in, they'd sit on his lap and he'd let them do part of the steering
Uncle Ilmo trying to show off his muscles by lifting the kids (age 5-7) on each arm but each year it'd get more difficult for him
Jaakko making regular food digestible for the toddlers whenever he had the time instead of buying store-bought food
I can imagine Jaakko taking the kids camping early on in life together with Ilmo
Jaakko helped Charline make a necklace out of her old teeth
Jaakko made some toys himself. He built the playground at the trailer park
Jaakko mainly expresses his love for the kids through actions: making them things, helping to fix stuff like a flat tire, a broken toy, etc.
I think he'd be a pretty chill dad the older the kids would get but would also try to keep them safe and close (hence that comment of the kids saying Jaakko would drop dead if they ever wanna move out)
Also there's an altered/cut note where Ilmo tells Jaakko he shouldn't let Charline get high at work lmao. I reckon this is when she's 18-20s so he'd be chill about them doing drugs later in life (after all he and Ilmo smoked joints at least once)
Uncle Ilmo would probably try to do the most unsuitable activities with kids (age 5-10) like he thought those fake puukko's would be a good idea. Like wanting to make pyro crafts with them or something 😭
Jaakko would and probably has thrown hands with people who had beef with his kids lmao
Protective over them. Even now that they're grown up and starting to spread their wings.
He hates doing Rituals for multiple things, but one is the risk it involves and he always fears that he'd die, leaving his kids fatherless.
Equally fearing for his kids' lives. Especially when they get more rebellious and want to stay out at night (knowing what lurks in the dark)
Protecting the area and dealing with the financial decline of the town are tedious tasks and issues but his kids motivate him to keep going through all the hardships even if the kids don't know it themselves.
He owns a bunch of photo albums full of pics of the twins through different stages in their life

THAT ISN’T A SEAX!!!
OK so small rant here.. warning may contain FIF spoilers
SEAXS ARE NOT STRAIGHT BARS WITH A 45DEG TIP!!!!!!! at best that is a crappy wharncliff
VIKING IS A JOB NOT A PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!!!!! at best it is a crime!!
Viking can be used to define a time period. The viking era is end of the 8th century to the middle of the 11th or more precisely the attack on Lindisfarne in 793 to the battle of Hastings in 1066, but not a location or group of people in Europe.
On last nights FIF “Viking” edition.
What the smiths made under the forced conditions of the show is one thing, only one contestant made anything that could be considered a seax and it was undersized to the requirements of the challenge. I will not call any one out for anything done in the heat of that forge, I know the difficultly of working under those conditions first hand, and further understand not every one has studied these they way I have. How ever that does not apply to of forgive the history channel, the producers, or the judges. They should know better, they should have done some basic research. They should have had a greater defining frame work to the rules, one that defined a seax because in no way were any of those seaxs. I lost it and started yelling at the screen when those knives were called a “classic” seax shape by the judges. It demonstrated a complete and total lack of any kind of understanding of what they are judging. To those of us that understand these iconic knives and have made a study of them it is akin to making a cleaver with a rounded point and calling it a french chef knife. It might be a cool knife but it isn’t anything like a french chef..
There are several things that define the seax. As a historical design it needs to be based on those things, if it is not, then it is not a seax. So History channel If you are going to use any historical knife as a base of a competition then do some basic research, and at least give a nod to some of the things that make them what they are.
Seaxs very in profile a good deal depending on where and when they were made they do how ever have some commonality no matter where they come from. (if we ignore the Vimose style seax they are only sort of seax anyway and should really be there own thing)
ALLWAYS
1 they are hidden tang (widdle tang like a file or through tang bent over or peened with a small washer)
2 they never have a riccisso, the bevel always caries into the handle.
3 the never have pins in the handle, in fact very few have any metal fittings what's so ever.
4 they always have a full height grind. Some times convex, sometimes very flat mostly a mix of the two.
MOST of the time.
1 Commonly on some types you see longer handles than modern knives with all wood or wood and bone construction.
2 Commonly you see oval and D shaped cross sections in the handles
3 For the most part no line on any original seax is straight they are filled with subtle curves that trick the eye. (A big part of why the are so compelling a shape)
The majority of broken back seaxs are Anglo-saxon those few that are continental tend to be narrower with slightly up swept points and are relatively consistent in width. The Anglo- saxon broken backs generally swell in both profile and taper to the break , making it both the widest and thickest point in the knife.
The seax of those who went viking would have been either a slight drop point or flat backed design, possibly with pattern welding or punched decoration on the blade. The closest thing to these knives still being make is the Puukko.
I will refrain from commenting on the total lack of understanding or facts on context or history in any of the statements of introduction from the host. as a friend said "why choose stupid? I cannot fathom the intellectual laziness, why not spend a short time for research and get interesting content instead of broadcasting the compost of misinformed minds?
I will now prepare my self for a years worth of inquires from fans that want “viking Seax” full tang with runes and G10 handles… well at least it is interest in my work.

An exceptionally little and helpful little Damascus fixed blade knife-like uncovered tang knife, or neck blade maybe. Simple to convey and extraordinary for each one of those little assignments that you run over frequently.

Damascus Fixed Blade knife Big 180
This Damascus fixed blade knife is a conventional bigger outside knife utilized by Damascus Company for a long time, it's utilized for those occupations that require less artfulness, hacking stuff and cutting sticks into stakes and so on. This "Enormous" Damascus is genuinely worh its name, the cutting edge quantifies an entire 180 mm giving it fantastic hacking power for overwhelming use!

They have been utilized as weapons nearly as much as regular instruments, at any rate previously. Still today they are a fundamental bit of pack for any outside fan. What makes a customary Damascus puukko exceptional contrasted with present day edges is that they have no observed edge horse crap, or anything like that - you have a straightforward, solid and sharp carbon steel cutting edge with a wooden handle. This genuinely is all you need, on the off chance that you realize how to utilize it.

Genuine Swedish Morakniv Companion By Real User
As the specifications hardened into government requirements, the pool of survival blade shapes converged on the smaller saber-like shape or spear-point with accoutrements like saw teeth for the spine, guards separating blade and handle, electrically non-conductive grips, plus a hammer-like pommel. The first thing you will notice when unsheathing the Fallkniven A1 is that it feels a lot more being a serious part of steel attached to a handle rather than a grip with a blade attached. If you have large or extra large mitts, you may recognize that the A1 grip is slightly less space-consuming than another serious survival knives, but there are good things about going smaller than erring on the side of large. The handle has a huge stainless steel handguard on one hand plus an equally conspicuous stainless buttcap for the other. It comes with the sharpest factory edge I have ever seen on a knife. At around $50.00 (US), they can be a little pricey for which they are, however they look really great… Most of the most really good-quality puukkos have become created by custom knife makers like Nordiska Kniver, and Iisakki Jarvenpaa, but anticipate to spend above $100.00 first of their outstanding knives. While, as already described, being deeply rooted in centuries old tradition, the Mora Knives company has constantly aimed to both follow current trends and to still improve and expand on his or her knife designs. This knife is 0.8" smaller inside the blade alone, nevertheless it does enable hammering, skinning, prying and chopping. I have owned and used a lot of knives and I mean a great deal and still have always declared there isn't any perfect knife and no one knife for all those things and I still maintain this, however, after owning and taking advantage of the Fallkniven F1 for a while I think I have found the knife that may often be with me at night, it doesn't matter what else I am carrying or using. The handle and blade combination make it comfortable to chop, whilst still being maintain the capacity to perform daily tasks too, The full tang goes entirely over the handle, and gives a striking surface for the butt end in the knife. wilderness survival knife

💼 - What do they do for a living?
Puukko's a blacksmith! Doesn't show up as often as it used to in stories since right now I'm primarily focusing on her backstory before I resume travel log. Truth be told, she doesn't need for much these days. A while after settling down in the lonely mountains, she spent some time running around all over the place digging up her old stashes of buried treasure. She's still sitting on a shipload of pirate goodies!
Without getting too in depth bc I've spoken about a few times before, she apprenticed as a blacksmith for quite some time before her career in piracy, while she was pretty young. Needed an outlet and way to help out with money when her mom fell ill. After the events of the story that's getting posted soon (TCKD pt 2) she took up the hammer again for a time before making her move to the valley. Now she runs a shop out of her house, mainly as a way to draw in visitors. Nobody wants to climb a mountain for a knife lol but her work is high quality so some folks do. The inspiration for her originally came from the knives in the 90s series (see "What's the deal with puukko?" In my pinned post) and it also serves as a method to get her outta the house or have strange guests, so that way I've always got something to write about. Sometimes she heads outta the valley to sell at markets or in towns. Most of the time she doesn't really charge any money for her work if you're visiting her, and she'll usually let guests stay the night!

An introduction to Puukko
This is my moomin self-insert OC, Puukko! Commissioned from @downydig
More info about her under the cut ❤ (click the pic for better quality!)
Edit: june 2022: Info needs updating, but still some good general info!
Edit: February 2023: check both my pinned post and the post tagged "what's the deal with Puukko?" To see a newer, updated and consolidated introduction!
Puukko is an adult moomin-like creature. Her ears are a little taller and pointier than average, one with a small gold piercing. She's quite short for an adult (only a little taller than moomintroll in the 90s series essentially) and her jubilant nature often leads to people assuming she's much younger than she is. She typically wears a short capelet, a belt with a knife, a pouch containing a long tobacco pipe, and carries a canteen cleverly modified to be used as a storage container.
Puukko runs a smithy out of her somewhat grandiose shack in the lonely mountains. Her few friends and repeat customers call her Smokey, on account of the constant scent of smoke in her fur. She typically deals in knife making but occasionally makes other tools and trinkets as well. All of her knives are price tagged, but they are mostly for show since she prefers to request that customers trade in either stories, supplies, or unique or hard to come by food and drink. She's been on many adventures including a length of time as a pirate, now preferring a life of mostly quiet solitude. She's a renown eccentric but the quality of her steel is just as well known; if you've got a quality knife in moominvalley, you got it from Puukko.
I got the idea for her after seeing the various knives used by characters in the 90s series, they come up quite often actually and are used by a lot of the major characters.
#moomins#moomin oc#moominsona#downydig did a fantastic job and I'm utterly stoked to see how this turned out! ^^#puukko#oh yeah and i got her name from a type of finnish general purpose knife

Excerpt from a dusty journal, late entry.
The ways in which folk behave had always been a mystery to me, but none moreso than Marion, First Mate of The Honeyed Word, and a woman beyond compare. A Fillyjonk with a kind heart and a helpful hand, she had always made my heart stir. I say "mystery" on account of I've no idea why she stayed with me all them years, where she is now, or how it all ended up the way it did. Me out here in some quiet hamlet in the hills, and her and me crew somewhere I've no doubt I'll never meet.
I find that with each passing year, the aching in my chest gets duller, and I find that I need to dull it less myself by drink or by journey. I fear that within myself are moments of weakness in which I give in to wonder and whimsy. Nostalgia is a very sweet tea with a very bitter aftertaste. I cannot help but to picture her standing over me while I work throughout the day, or across the table at meal times. A trifling matter to some I'd reckon.
I know she wouldn't have it. Whether she'd have me after all these years is another question, but one I dare not seek the answer to. She craved adventure, and my quiet life without a doubt would suffer her a great deal. I've become an awful bore in my advanced age! She knew where to find some of our old stashes, and I'm loathe to admit that I left some rather embarrassing notes in a few of them. Hope yet lingers in my breast that the notes aren't of legible quality any longer, and that the money within is enough for her and the rest of the crew to build new lives. It's a wish I seldom stray from upon seeing a star shoot across the night sky.
What month is it now? Lost track. Winter.
Signed, Puukko.
#whetstone's whispers#moomin oc#expect this style of short writing to reoccur!#if it seems stilted or odd its bc she is old timey#also finally first mate name drop#apparently her name means beloved or star of the sea? i don't buy it but that's cute

Puukko modern au… what would it be?
That's a good question! We've talked about future AU CyberPuukko:2099 (which i still think is hilarious and adorable) but I don't think I've ever thought of modern day.
She'd probably still run her business making and selling knives. I don't think much would change for her aside from her struggling to use the internet!
If she couldn't run her business I guess she'd work at a hunting/sporting goods store behind the knife counter. Although idk how long that would last she does not take orders well nor deal with authority all that well either

The World's Best Damascus Steel Fixed Blade Knives
Damascus Mini-Knife, carbon steel
An exceptionally little and helpful little Damascus knife-like universally useful blade with that sweet sheepsfoot sharp edge profile. Simple to convey and extraordinary for every one of those little errands that you run over frequently.
General highlights
• Very little size, simple to convey and deal with. Extraordinary ally for an enormous chopper or hatchet.
• Damascus knife-like sheep foot cutting edge profile.
• A indent at the foundation of the cutting edge to ease honing over long stretches of utilization and support.
• Spine ground and slanted to strike sparkles from Ferro poles.
• Full tang with finished over molded elastic hold.
• Protruding uncovered tang head with cord gap.
Damascus cowhide sheath For knife
A legitimate calfskin Damascus sheath for the Damascus fixed blade knife! Extreme and delightful in its usefulness, similar to the Damascus itself the sheath also is intended to be simply down to earth - it has all you need and no more.
• 6 cm wide waist band, fits pretty much any belt you can discover, even those extra wide military sorts.
• D-ring swiveled waist band gives the blade a chance to turn on your belt shielding it from coming in the manner while moving about or sitting.
• Snug fitting press stud lash verified the blade appropriately in its place. At the point when fresh out of the plastic new the lash may appear "short", simply pull on it a piece or wet it with warm water and it will before long get an ideal length and shape!
• A grommet for a leg attach has been added to the tip.
• And to wrap things up the sheath does obviously have a seepage gap at the end.
Inside the cowhide sits a similar plastic sharp edge monitor that accompanies the standard Damascus .
Excellent materials: the calfskin is 2mm thick vegetable tanned cowhide, solid and strong. All connections are made with various solid studs.
