The Eclipse Episodes 10 & 11

WARNING: Spoilers! Like duh, but like there's a TWIST I did not see coming. Also, shit got real serious between these two episodes so...there's a lot less funny here.

Okay, so I definitely watched episode 10. I remember fucking nothing. It seems that Chadok is definitely a shit bag. And we find out that Ayan's uncle was also a teacher at Suppalo, one that Akk really looked up to.

The scene where Akk puts together everything and realizes that this teacher he cared about is actually dead, fucking heartbreaking y'all. I am still enjoying the sweetness with Akk and Aye. But I'm also still confused about whatever this curse is supposed to be.

No jokes for episode 10 because nothing made an impression. (Okay I have one joke, but it's kind of in poor taste, but I'll give it to you. I work in a small office, me and one other person. I was watching on my tablet at work, but I didn't have headphones, so it was just playing. My coworker asked what Chadok's fucking problem was when she saw him yelling at Akk. My response was "he's mad because the kid isn't being Hitler Youth-ey enough". This is not entirely incorrect, but it is in poor taste.)

God Akk fully working out how he's been used to hold up this fucked up system, well now I'm crying. Their discussion in bed and Aye wanting kisses, so sweet but also the STRESS on Akk.

Thua did do a bad thing! Like it's 'ehhh' because like he's not lying, but Akk is supposed to be his friend. And if your friend's being shitty you should say something, but like maybe don't call them out in front of your whole school. I feel bad for Handsome boy. Also, public outing of Akk, definitely not cool, esp. since Thua is fully aware of the ramifications of it.

Props to movie boy for quick thinking, but like the whole outing situation sucks. I do also appreciate the lady teacher saying she'll stand up for the protesting students. I was worried about her kowtowing to the pressure since she's a new teacher.

Poor Akk crying, he needs the hug from Aye. 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭. No not friends fighting.

Oh my GOD!!!! Why the fuck has Chadok been acting like this the whole time!!!! Oh I do not want to like Chadok, but these actors are giving their all here. I'm so fucking sad right now. So the headmistress is the villain, that solves why Chadok was scared of her. 😭😭😭😭😭 This is so fucking sad.

Okay maybe Thua also needs a boot to the ass. Some good intentions, but dude at the expense of your friends??? That's close to a Killmonger style villain, jeez, but he also didn't murder anyone so like it's hard to just shove him into a villain category.

Okay I gotta break some tension. Handsome boy asks what he should do to Thua. My thought: Thua should say "Why don't you kiss me about it." It's not gonna solve problems but if I've learned anything from KinnPorsche it's "if you can't beat the enemy, then maybe fuck them (you know, just in case that works)". But also Handsome boy is now Sad Handsome boy. 🥺

What is this suspicious weird kid always in Akk's business. Now I'm fucking worried he's going to fuck shit up. I do think that making Akk and Aye star in this short film is fun.

Thua is NOT the villain of “The Eclipse”

Let me start this post off by saying that I do not condone Thua outing his friends’ secret relationship. It’s true that he is my favorite character in the series; and I believe he is one of the most well-written BL characters (especially in a high school BL), period. That being said, his actions in EP11—as well as throughout the series—came from a place of pain and suffering. And when decisions are made based on pain, things rarely end well.

But before we talk about Thua (and he is not the villain that some are making him out to be) let’s talk about Akk. While Ajarn Chadok uses Akk to enforce the authoritarian regime of the school, Akk is the one who decides the means in which he is going to carry out Ajarn Chadok’s orders. Akk decides to torment his classmates. Akk sends the truck into the crowd of protesters. And it’s Akk who drops the flower pot from the 4th floor, mere inches from a student’s head. Akk’s tactics rely on the potential of physical harm to affect those who he sees as a threat to his school, and his title as Student Prefect Club President.

Now compare these things to the methods Thua used: Thua created the Twitter account. He used it, as well as the banner, to scare the protesters. He set a mannequin on fire. While both Akk and Thua’s actions caused psychological trauma (yes, I said trauma) to their targets, only Akk’s methods could have directly resulted in both mental and physical harm.

If we look at Thua’s character, we see in the beginning that he is true neutral: the quiet kid who just keeps his head down, does his work and wants to get out of the hellhole that is Suppalo as fast as possible. It’s not until Ayan calls Thua out for not taking a stand and fighting against injustice that we see Thua begin to shift from true neutral to neutral good (with some chaotic tendencies). Now in EP11 Ayan is actively insisting that Thua silence himself. Why? Because it would reveal that Ayan has been covering for Akk this entire time (which IMHO  is just downright hypocritical of AyanAkk.)

Which brings me to the protest—and Thua’s outing of AyanAkk as being in a relationship. As a member of the queer community myself (💗💜💙) I can acknowledge that Thua outing AyanAkk was inappropriate. He robbed them of the decision to be open about their relationship. However, I fully—and I say this with my ENTIRE CHEST—support Thua outing Akk as the one behind the curse. Akk’s actions not only inflicted psychological and potential physical damage to those who were seen as “out of line,” they also encouraged an environment where Thua (and Kan for that matter) was bullied. And as we see in EP5 the bullying Thua endures leads him to feel like he wants to disappear. This could be interpreted as an early warning sign of passive suicidal ideation. 

Had it not been for Kan, disguised as man of mystery Bruce Wayne) there is no telling what Thua would’ve done. The grief of losing his father, the emotional and mental abuse he has had to endure from his stepfather, as well as the bullying and blatant social rejection by his peers, resulted in Thua’s depression—yeah, my little pudding pop is depressed as fuck! 

That depression soon lead to rage and shame. Thua was [rightfully] enraged by the injustices that allowed others to torment him. That torment kept him in his depressive state, resulting in him being “like a robot.” Ever heard of the expression you cannot heal in the same environment that broke you? Thua’s pain was unleashed when The World Remembers began their protests. Because those protests would lead to a version of Suppalo that would not support Thua’s tormentors.

So for those of you saying that Thua should not have been forgiven, I ask you this: why not?

Akk lied to his friends for years about the curse of Suppalo.

And he knowingly put their physical and mental well being in harm’s way.

Why are we as a fandom quick to forgive Akk, but not Thua? Is it because Akk was being controlled by Chadok? If that’s the case, I have to go back to the argument that Chadok did not tell Akk to run that truck into a crowd of his peers; Chadok did not tell Akk to drop that flower pot on their heads. Chadok simply told Akk to do what must be done to keep the protesters at bay. 

Akk’s actions directly contributed to the student body’s mentality of causing harm to those who are “different” including Thua, a boy who is lonely and just wants his pain to end.

TL:DR Thua is not the villain everyone is making him out to be. He is a child who has been directly affected by Akk’s actions as Student Prefect Club President. And he deserves to be forgiven for his actions just as much as Akk deserves to be forgiven for his.

I just wanted to ask about your thoughts on how akk is as a prefect.

I’ve been thinking about how beloved of a prefect akk would be if the school and its teachers weren’t so shitty. He genuinely wants to protect the students even if he doesn’t always choose a good method. I think the biggest reason he’s so harsh on the protestors is because he thinks his methods are nothing compared to the school. Especially coming from a lower socioeconomic he realizes what having something on your record can be detrimental to the future and he’s trying to stop them from doing what he thinks they will regret later.

He upholds the schools values in front of the students but also doesn’t go overboard with the power play . Like when he stopped namo from taking the phone from the kid but still confiscated the phone because it was against the rules. At the same time he also brings the students perspective to the teachers too. Like the scene where the teachers were drilling into ayan. He thought they were going overboard and went straight to chadok. This is such a mature way of handling situations like this and I don’t think a lot of ppl realize it. He realizes he has that privilege of directly asking chadok and even gave him the benefit of the doubt of not knowing what the teachers were doing. Because he thought that this isn’t something ppl he respected would do.

For him, the rules with the uniforms and not having phones isn’t a big deal. They are easy to follow. But what the teachers did to ayan wasn’t right. It was a clear power play and he was immediately uncomfortable with it. So when taking to chadok didn’t work he went to teacher waree who still had some power to stop this.

A good mentor could’ve really taught him about flexibility of rules depending on circumstances. They could’ve taught him about how different ppl have different priorities. And you have to let them make their own decisions and choose their own consequences 😭 I just think about how much he could’ve thrived if he had better teachers and just😭😭😭😭

That's part of the real message of The Eclipse, between the revolution and the romance.

It's that good people end up hurting people because they're taught the wrong things.

It's that Akk, who is a wonderful young man just doing his best, is hurting Ayan and The World Remembers because he thinks he's doing the right thing because that's what he's been taught.

It's that Kan, a young gay man, is hurting himself and people around him because he's been taught that the only way to exist is to hide who he is because of 100 year old rules upheld by the people those rules benefit.

It's Thua hiding his earrings and staying silent because it's safe and he needs to be safe and he can follow the rules so he does because if he doesn't he gets punished.

It's the teachers all ganging up on Ayan even though he is a literal child because he goes against the rules they're upholding and nothing else matters to them because all of their power is in those rules.

It's why Akk can go to the teachers and talk about Ayan and receive an answer that troubles him because it calls so many of the reasons he's been following these rules into but he also doesn't know how to question them because they're all he knows.

It's how being around Dika is what led Ayan to revolution but also what helped The World Remembers and how we know they knew him and that he was most likely on their side.

It's how losing Dika is what broke Ayan, what sent him there, but it's also the look Akk and Kan shared at the thought that he might be dead, at the loss that would be.

It's about the school erasing Dika because he promoted equality and he promoted the very idea that not all of the old rules must be followed as times change.

Akk is exactly what Suppalo has shaped him to be and, yes, we can see who he could have been and we can tell that he is a good person trapped in a bad place and that, sometimes, he ever knows it. But we can also see that he has accepted his role in this and that he is not backing down despite knowing that what he's doing isn't right.

Akk and Kan are both proof of exactly what Suppalo does to people. Even Thua, honestly, even Wat. They're all shaped by this school that has taught him values that are contrary to who they are as people and you see how much it hurts them.

Kan has so much self-hatred and aching and yearning and pain and he's hiding himself and pushing people away while Akk fights for the teachers to try for any chance to protect other students and Wat knows his dreams are beyond him.

Suppalo is the enemy. Suppalo is taking these boys, these good boys, and turning them into more people who will mindlessly follow the old laws and uphold the old rules just because that's what they do.

As some Twitter users pointed out, Ayan hinted at some things about Thua to his mom when they were at the cafe at a time where Thua wasn't publicly out, especially to his parents. And you can see him panic briefly and brush it off/divert the subject. Especially when he was suffering inner turmoil in regards to his stepfather telling him to he more "manly". Obviously Ayan didn't know this, but still.

He may have indirectly/subconsciously learned that it's ok to out someone if it's for the "better good", as that was the example Ayan set for Thua.

It doesn't make it any better, of course, but remember that they're highschool students (17/18 yrs old) who typically don't think before they do shit and they're not the best at empathy.

It was, essentially, a tit-for-tat situation where I truly believe Thua wasn't doing it out of malice, but just that he may have learned- or interpreted (incorrectly)- that outing someone was fine if it's for a "good cause" or if you have "good intentions".

And I'm not defending Thua, but people shouldn't view the situation from their own adult, mature point of view and pass judgment from a mature perspective when the characters are not adult or mature. And this is not negating that what Thua did was shitty, but Ayan hinting/teasing at stuff to someone's parents wasn't good either... Ayan was doing it with good intentions, but so was Thua 😬

Hi, sorry for taking a bit longer to answer. It got busy and I wanted to answer properly. So this will be a long answer.

TLDR: I mostly agree with your points. Ayan crossed the line, too, yes. But it is in no way comparable to what Thua did. They are all flawed in a way but I think that's good. It makes them real and human. Still, we should discuss their flaws.

Full and detailed answer in the following. This is obviously my opinion and interpretation of things.

I don't want to come across as haughty or anything. I fully agree with you that one shouldn't forget that these characters are teenagers and are not mature yet, so they might do foolish things. But that doesn't mean that their actions cannot or shouldn't be judged. And at the end of the day, this is still fiction... Still, considering that the show is meant as social criticism and a paint a realistic picture of what it is like to be a queer person in Thailand, discussing the show and taking the plot serious, is very much justified.

Good intention often cause quite the harm, this goes for adults as well as for teenagers.

I rewatched the scene at the coffee shop just to be sure and Ayan doesn't hint at Thua being gay at all. He didn't out Thua nor did he say: Your son feels uncomfortable around his step-dad! And still I think Ayan crossed a line to meddle in Thua's family business. In that point, I agree with you. At least, Ayan knows this himself, he says it out loud and apologises for it.

However, I cannot quite see Thua's good intentions. He wanted everyone to stop lying? For what? He wanted the curse to stop? He continued it. His motivation is a mess.

I am a teacher so I work with teenagers and I see it up close how teenagers often do things without thinking it through. For many teenagers around that age things are mostly black and white/right or wrong and they often cannot see the consequences of their actions to a larger extent. This is a simple neurological and psychological fact about how the brain and thinking develops with age. It is entirely normal - as you also said. But especially because of that it is NECESSARY to teach and educate teenagers of where the line is and what consequences follow when they cross the line. And further, more often than not, certain actions or opinions are neither right or wrong. It is difficult to grasp that different opinions both have the right to co-exist and that some questions do not have a definite answer. There are many things that exist in a grey area.

Thua considered what Akk was doing as wrong and drew the conclusion that he should face punishment for that. Lying is wrong, covering up is wrong. A wrong must be put right, so he does that by exposing everything without considering that lying isn't always bad (it really isn't, if you are a Kant follower, we can only agree to disagree on that one). He doesn't consider WHY people acted the way they did. He doesn't consider that for a long time Akk did the curse because he believed he was doing the right thing as well!

He simply considers his definition and understanding of right and wrong as the correct one without having all the facts. This is immature and age-appropriate in a way. I can forgive that.

But outing Akk and Ayan was in no way necessary for Thua's goals. It was unnecessarily cruel and served no purpose at all. I do not get why Thua should have said that. That's why I was mad. A person who suffered under homophobic bullying exposed Akk and villainised him by adding that he was in a relationship with a guy.

Thua doesn't even consider anything he has done as crossing a line neither did he apologise. He is facing no consequences for his actions so far. We have seen Akk suffer TERRIBLY under what he has done. He feels the whole weight of the curse. Thua is completely fine after having outed his closest friends publically, exposed one of his friends who will most likely lose his scholarship because of it, which means effectively ruining his life. And he is fine? Don't get me wrong. Akk has to face consequences for what he has done. But the fact that he was pressured into it has to be considered...

The beauty of it all is that the characters in this series are flawed because they're human. They feel real this way. But all the more reason to address their flaws and discuss them.
