Are there any yuri manga/anime that you would recommend to a new fan of the genre? Everyone swears by Utena but I don't think I have the mental fortitude for a show like that yet.

Bloom Into You by Nio Nakatani

(manga and anime)

It's the classic newcomer entry point but there's a reason it's still as highly lauded as it is: It is just that good. It's got excellent drama, the main two characters have a really great and intriguing dynamic between them and it much more openly acknowledge the queerness of it's characters then a lot of yuri before it did. A lot of the more recent yuri mangakas regard it as a major inspiration, and the anime getting as big as it did tends to be seen as one of the major factors in the yuri boom we've been experiencing the last 4 years or so.

Both the anime and manga for it are excellent, though the anime only covers the first couple of volumes (which unfortunately is something I can say about about most stuff on this list as yuri anime tend to not get more then a single cour...)

Whisper Me a Love Song by Eku Takeshima

(manga and anime (not recommended))

Had to get at least one band yuri on the list. Unfortunately, the recent anime for Whisper Me a Love Song kind of turned into a trash fire. Which sucks as the manga itself is quite excellent. Early chapters are very cute and sweet and the later chapters have some very spicy drama.

I really can't recommend the anime for this one so it's a manga only recommendation outside of maybe checking out a playlist of the songs from the anime when they appear in the manga.

How Do We Relationship? by Tamifull

(manga only atm)

Hands down one of the best examinations/dissection of what it means to be in a relationship from any romance series I've ever read. Every character feels like they're written as people with their own likes/dislikes and feelings towards romance and sex instead of romance character archetypes. it genuinely feels like you're watching people navigate their differences to make a relationship work rather than a "these two were made for each other" style romance series.

That being said, this is probably the hardest to read series on this list as it can absolutely get way too real at times and also does not shy away from talking about heavier subject such as homophobia, trauma, etc.

School Zone Girls by Ningiyau

(manga only atm)

This is basically a Nichijou/Daily Lives of High School Boys style slapstick comedy but full blown yuri. If you're a fan of stupid x stupid, this is the series for you as there are so many morons (affectionate) in love with each other here.

Unfortunately, the manga is currently on indefinite hiatus while the mangaka works on other projects which is the main downside of this one but it's still def worth checking out.

I'm in Love with the Villainess by Inori

(light novel(audiobook version also available), manga and anime)

Otome game villainess isekai romcom that is very gay while also being extremely frank when it comes to discussing queerness, bigotry and uneven wealth/power distribution. It's a series that that ardently refuses to use subtext at every turn which is quite respectable given how many yuri tend to dance around discussing queerness outside of "they're in love". It's not perfect and does have its flaws (enough to get labelled as "problematic" by the usual ingrates) but its strengths easily elevate it to one best yuri series from last couple of years.

The anime and manga are both excellent (with both the JP and EN dubs of the anime being fantastic) but they are pretty behind compared to the light novels (anime only goes up to the first chapter of the second book and the manga is roughly 70% through the second book). The light novels are genuinely excellent reads so if you get caught up on the other two, I'd def recommend picking up the LNs.

What if Kamen Rider but yuri?... That's basically it on my sale tbh. It's an extremely gay yuri tokusatsu. It's genuinely a crime that it has not gotten an anime or an actual live action tokusatsu...

I'M SO ANNOYED in Gnosia I was playing as a gnosia with Yuriko and Jonas, and when they were randomly assigned as allies I thought 'ok what stupid bullshit is going to go down this time' because the other time I specifically remember it being the three of us, stupid bullshit happened. When someone pulled that 'say you're human' crap they were the only two to not play along and so people got on their cases but I was able to deflect, and then that night Jonas wanted me to kill Otome, I refused, and then he and Yuriko threw me under the bus the very next day and I was put in cold sleep.

So thanks a lot guys, whatever. But this time was way worse, Jonas claimed to be the engineer when Stella (who was the real engineer) did and the next day he said she was human. OKAY, FINE, WHATEVER, not the move I would've gone for but there's an AC follower this time so we could just go with the idea that that's her, but then someone used definite human on her and so since she had said I was gnosia, they used definite enemy on both me AND Jonas and then of course *I* was the one selected for cold sleep that time. OKAY. FINE. WHATEVER. It's not like I have to deal with the consequences anyway, I'm just going to loop again, have fun getting dissected or whatever it is they do to gnosia they discover, Jonas! This isn't my problem anymore!

... Actually maybe the very funniest part was that Stella had asked me to collaborate the night before, and then she reported me as gnosia the next day.

Haruka : considering both of his songs were from the android girl album I feel like he's gonna get a third. Of which the only other song I know the lyrics to is relationship scramble.

I think it could work ("right now I want instant love", could be the whole any attention is good, negative inclusive, so long as it's attention) (bro idk)

Yuno : honestly not a clue haha, tho I think Rabbit Hole would work (+it's a popular prediction for her, I haven't listened to it but it could be a good choice?)

Kotoko : imma be real I forgot. To kin assign her a song. But after having a short look at Anti - Beat I think she could get Dilemma? I think it works for kotoko. Idk

Tell me what songs you guys predict for any given character next trial I like seeing people's readings on what fits the character or the covers!!! Particularly kotoko, yuno and mikoto as much as I like their characters I don't have much of a read on them...

Also tell me what your favourite covers are!!!! I personally like both of shidous, kazui's, mahirus and fuuta's, and I really liked the monopoisoner one! (Haven't listened to reversible campaign enough to form opinion), as well as Harukas two breaths walking cover (haven't listened enough to the android girl one whoops)

Maybe this is just me, but something I miss in portal fantasies—the original isekais—is how the audience was allowed to explore new worlds.

Nowadays, isekais focus mainly on characters which is great as that’s what interest me the most, but they’re always in the same places which is a high shame.

What I love about portal fantasies is the exploration of characters and the worlds. I like seeing new lands, new creatures, etc. That’s why stories like Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, Land of Oz, the Phantom Tollbooth, Harry Potter, and etc. appealed to me. All these had interesting and unique characters with creative worlds to explore, and they were optimistic about showing the readers the world. There was always a feeling of welcome that still makes readers want to go back, even to this day. (And two of those series are over 100 years old! Now that’s impressive.)

Nowadays, the majority of the worlds can all be squished into five places; A world inspired by Tudor / medieval Europe or ancient China or Korea, a “magic” otome school or a JRPG inspired world.

With the latter two we don’t really get to see the world, especially with the first one.

In 90% the stories I’m read which take place in a world inspired by Tudor / medieval Europe have the same main locations:

*The Protagonist’s room

*The room to greet guests

*A small part of the garden for tea parties

*Castle where a ball is being held

**Same places as above, though the castle garden will look more magical

*Castle hallway

*Throne room

*Ballroom

*Village that either looks like a meadeval town or London in the early 1800

*Dress / jewelry / magic shop

*warehouse

*hidden information guild

*Bakery or kitchen if the protagonist cooks

There’s a few more location, but I’m willing to bet that the next story you read with an early Europe inspired world will have five or more of these as main locations.

I’m less familiar with the eastern ones, but I’m sure they basically have the same, just eastern style.

And there’s a reason for that as these stories are ones with a focus on noble politics whether its in an early European inspired setting or eastern inspired court.

These environments are minimal as having a controlled environment allows the readers to focus on the characters and the mental war being waged. Still, what a waste, especially with a fantasy setting with dragons, elves, and dwarves, who’s villages we never get to see and who’s race we barely learn about.

Otherwise, we usually just get the slice-of-life fluff that takes place in a fantasy world. Which I understand, as these were popularized in the 2020s where—things happened. And during that time everyone was burned out, tired, and overworked despite the massive layoffs, so the idea of going to another world and just being able to chill was appealing to the masses. (Especially in countries where most “isekais” were made.) Anyway, the world building here is mainly just fluff or jokes.

There are the “trapped in a game worlds” but those worlds are all the same and dull.

I’m not saying all those are bad but I miss stories where we get to travel and see the world! I miss Magic Knight Rayearth, Fushigi Yugi, Escaflowne, and more. I miss the adventure aspect of seeing a whole new world.

Please don’t misunderstand, I love the “isekai” genre and how it’s being used to dissect certain tropes like main character syndrome, but can we switch out the politics for a good old adventure once in awhile?

i need more sibling angst w all the seven bros. i keep getting those siblings/brothers slideshows on tiktok and it’s killing! me! ☹️☹️☹️

especially between mammon and lucifer,,,,,,their relationship is actually sad. the game kinda plays it off as a joke and makes mannon the comic relief by spiting him as a fool 24/7, which i get. like ok. it’s an otome game first and foremost. they’re not gonna go super hard with lore and interpersonal relationships. but if you take a step back and see it beyond that, there’s much to dissect AND digest. lucifer plays this stereotypical authoritative role and mammon is the opposite. i know lucifer means well and he truly loves his family, but he has a heavy hand. the trauma of losing lilith? he can’t fathom losing another, so he’s sworn that he’d protect the rest even if it meant despising his own father. mammon feels the same way, but he copes differently.

i feel like both the two eldest are just trying to keep things together. where lucifer is so scared he doesn’t realize he sometimes hurts his brothers, mammon picks up all the pieces and holds it together. they mean a lot….😢

here’s some songs i think would fit:

Okay, anon, I had to go on TikTok to look up those slideshow videos 'cause I haven't seen them (I rarely use TikTok and when I do it's all cake decorating videos because I have a problem). So I was seeing a bunch where it's a picture of the siblings as kids and then switches to one of them all grown up?? Can you imagine something like that with our bros??

But you happened to touch upon a subject here that I have opinions about. You're right. It's an otome game and the point is for the MC to be able to have all these hot guys fall for them. I get that. But it means that I'm never sure what they're going to sacrifice in the name of silly otome vibes.

The Mammon/Lucifer dynamic is a perfect example.

In fact, I would argue that just by himself, the "Lucifer as authority figure" concept is a disservice to his character. It sets him apart from all of his brothers in a way that makes it so they don't get to fully flesh out his relationships with any of them. He's too strict, too overbearing, and too often puts himself apart from the rest. It's annoying because all of the brothers indicate that they love Lucifer. They love him and that's why they followed him to the Devildom to begin with. Satan loves him, too, albeit with far more complexity attached. But Lucifer can only express his love for them through strictness. He's trying to ensure he never loses them and I get that, but he also never allows himself to be soft with them. We only get very rare glimpses of that. Lately in NB I feel like they tried to help with that, as evidenced by the way the first season ended. But generally speaking, they too often play to his role as authority figure, in my opinion. And yet he's the star of the show. The way he's always last like they think MC is going to choose him over the rest every time. The way we get more insight into his history, the way he has a far more involved and complicated character, where other brothers are just regulated to very simple personalities. I don't get why they do that, personally.

As for Mammon specifically, that whole thing confuses me still. I went through a hardcore Mammon phase where he was actually next to Barbatos in my ranking (this was before I figured out how much I love Solomon lol). And I really had an issue with Lucifer constantly punishing Mammon all the time for things that seemed relatively minor. If we consider that it's actually Lucifer's fear that is the motivation behind his tendency to be strict, though, it changes the meaning. Mammon gets punished the most because he's the one Lucifer cares about the most. But that doesn't make it okay in my mind. If anything, that's just even more fucked up. But the annoying thing about all of this is it's only our fan interpretation. It is far more likely that the only reason Mammon is the one who gets strung up all the time and so on is because it's funny. Or it's supposed to be. I'm pretty sure they just wrote it that way to be a joke, not because they're making some grand statement about Lucifer's relationship with Mammon and how he deals with the trauma he's endured.

Mammon is often depicted as kinda silly and moronic, but that's also a disservice to his character the way Lucifer being the strict one is to his. Because you're completely right. Lucifer doesn't realize he hurts his brothers and Mammon is the one keeping things together. It always struck me as far more likely that Mammon is playing a role for his younger brothers' benefit. We get enough flashes of insight from Mammon that indicate he understands things far more than he lets on. He deliberately acts out to draw Lucifer's attention because Lucifer's fear of losing his brothers makes him too harsh on them. And if Mammon is always Lucifer's top priority, then he's more likely to leave the younger ones alone. This is also fucked up. And again, this is all just outside interpretation because I don't think any of that is something they meant to imply with their Lucifer-always-punishing-Mammon joke. That's just how it comes across.

The problem with these jokes is that if you take them in any kind of serious context, you get analysis similar to the unfortunate three paragraphs I just made you suffer through. Because these jokes, if looked into more deeply, imply all of the complicated stuff I talked about. But I don't think they meant to imply any of that, which is why it's kind of fucked up when you look too closely at it.

That's how a lot of it goes with this particular game and that's why I always have such a hard time trying to figure out what's going on. Because they definitely have all this lighthearted nonsense sitting right beside some actual deep character development. So what are we supposed to take seriously and what's meant to be just silly stuff? (Another example is my issue with the reason behind Barbatos being angry with Solomon all this time - I took the joke as something serious lol.)

I apologize for the length of this response, but it's just something that I have a lot of thoughts about! I have a tendency to come at everything from a storytelling perspective where I want everything to have a reason and to make sense. But I think some of the stuff in this game really isn't meant to have a deeper meaning, so I'm just creating extra analysis where there is none. I've had to kind of balance my expectations and even then I end up with moments like the Barbatos reveal where I get annoyed lol. But that's on me, I really should know better by now.

Anyway! Thank you for the song recs, I'll have to listen to them all! I loooove "Not Strong Enough" by boygenius, I've been listening to that song a lot lately! So I'm sure I'll enjoy the others you've recommended as well!

And again I'm sorry about how long this response ended up being! I never realize I have so much to say until I've written four or five paragraphs and then I'm like ohh oops.

Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time?

Her name is/was Cloudy! She's a weird bug-like alien who I'm currently figuring out what to do with because she's a huge self-insert and I feel like I can't do much with her in her current state because I have trouble putting a pin in what makes me "me" so writing her is difficult. I'm trying to make her have more elements of myself and not be entirely a me-stand-in, if that makes sense. No idea what to do with her otherwise! She also has a friend, Shadowmoore, and a friend/love interest, Quinen, a bug alien girl and bug alien guy respectively. They're all equally old because I liked the idea of trios as a kid hehe

As far as "what music would they listen to" I do have some ideas:

The Merchant would like hard-girl-pop (whatever genre Remi Wolf and Marina and the Diamonds are) and Chappell Roan (once again hard-girl-pop and she's also a lesbian like her). Anything upbeat with an edge to it, really. She'd probably also like punk rock, like Weezer or the Beastie Boys or Blink-182, anything catchy and just a bit cheesy/lame (I mean this affectionately). Also Joan Jett and Heart! Anything with women who rock and go hard, really

The Surgeon would listen to depeche mode because they have odd yet darkly erotic vibes. I feel like he'd be into that weird kind of new wave 80s music in general. He also probably listens to horribly numbing elevator jazz (also saying this affectionately as someone who loves this music too). POV you're getting stitches and the doctor won't stop humming along to the "your call is put on hold" music he's blasting in the background

The Paramedic also likes depeche mode for the same reasons. Other than that I can't think of music she'd like...maybe someday I will think up more for her

Q loves bubblegum pop. He'd also like cheery love songs, probably from the 60s or earlier because they tend to have no swearing or overtly sexual themes. She's not a prude, he just gets squeamish around listening to that kind of thing. I feel like Q would also listen to a lot of chiptune and video game soundtracks (Bubblegum K.K. from animal crossing comes to mind as a potential fave of hers)

Jean Doe would listen to breakcore and metal, anything loud with a lot of bass (partially because they're hard of hearing and like feeling the music). They probably prefer instrumental songs over songs with lyrics. They're also very proudly french canadian so there's probably some underground drum-and-bass group from canada that they really like, but alas, I am not super into that genre so I do not know any specific artists they'd listen to...

The Renegade would be a total music snob about her favorite genre...but I have no idea what she's listen to. I almost wanna go the classic "stuck up formal lady listens to only classical/orchestral music" route but I feel like it might be more interesting if her favorite music genre was something unexpected for someone to be snobbish about, like non-serious rap or boy bands or joke/parody songs or something. Starting to actually like the "she's stuck up about the quality of parody songs" concept. She'll put on The Saga Begins by Weird Al and pour a glass of red wine before launcing into a tasteful rant about the ingenuity of using American Pie to create a star wars parody (it's clever and funny on a surface level but it also accurately captures the musical odyssey that is American Pie combined with the sprawling narrative that is star wars, you see, so it has immense dual thematic value--)

Other than that I have no other music thoughts...too many ocs not enough brain space lol but I especially love thinking about their music tastes :D

19. What are some things that inspired your stories? Real events? Maybe a dream?

That's funny that this question mentions dreams because I do have a character who is inspired by a weird recurring nightmare I used to have. Still working on how to fit him into my story as a whole but he's neat I think. Most of my other story ideas are just things I find interesting or messed up or cool or compelling tbh :)

29. What was your first fandom you were in? Did you make any art/fanfic for it?

I joined tumblr back in 2016 for steven universe actually! I was also into homestuck at the time so those were my main two fandoms. I still think fondly of homestuck (mainly the intermission though) and although I never finished steven universe I still think it's a pretty cute show. I didn't start making fanart until mid-2020 (I literally only drew my ocs haha) and I started writing fanfic (again only wrote about my ocs) in early 2023

HAZBIN HOTEL REWORKING (Worldbuilding)

It’s been a while since I haven’t posted anything due to work.

Let me phrase something about this: The worldbuilding of Hazbin Hotel needs a lot of changes, and I mean, a lot. There are much inconsistencies to explain much more behind the whole facade of Heaven and Hell, like how the souls work, how both Heaven and Hell operates, as well as how Extermination - but we will call that ‘Annual Purge’ - work.

Worldbuilding is something I really want to explore more, especially that I am a Hazbin Pilot Fanatic (Like I have been there since 2019, and I can call out some inconsistencies, but the dynamics were pretty fine just there could be something to flesh out) and the Hunicast Enjoyer.

I would love to thank @pyresol for helping me in this. Don’t worry, it is too long, so I’ll dissect everything.

HELL

Yes. I will try fixing the system of hell as much as possible, so consider having changes to be acquired in this.

As we all know, Hell is a place that is separated from God. I took inspiration of Hell from one of Dante Allighieri’s Divine Comedy ‘Inferno’, since it’s kind of an obvious place in that novel, but I added some of the twists, so it can be at least interesting.

There are two realms of Hell: Limbo and Dis.

Limbo

Limbo is located at the very top of the inverted pyramid, perhaps by looking at the chart above. These are the temporary places for the sinners, but not some of the native, hellborns, etc. Just like in Purgatorio, it was also split into 7 realms, which is based on the 7 deadly sins, so of course, not all Sinners belong to the Pride Ring. It is spreading everywhere due to what sins they committed in the mortal realm. Limbo is based on United Kingdom, and it's led in the constitutional Monarchy - while the House of Magne (or technically, Lucifer and Lilith) were the highest and mainly the Monarch of Limbo, both House of Bel and House of Goetia were in charge/ hold the power to shape Limbo.

In this version, sinners are the lowest of them all, despite working and living the same normal life as the Native Hellborns. The difference is the sinners were pretty limited to the following:

Their rights were stripped

Sinners who are in a contract with the overlord will lose their autonomy

No access to the mortal world

No magical abilities - unless they made a deal, they can acquire that to a certain extent

Marriage with a sinner and a native is considered taboo by the law (punishable by forced separation)

Sinners were in a form of everything they loathed or were forced to relive the same experience when they were human, whether is using the other person's identity, animal-like features, or anything related to their own character. It was the punishment God gave to them to experience the real suffering from their own consequences (hence the whole God created hell to separate the saints and vulnerable from the wicked people). The colors are coded on their design accents.

Sinners have their limited lifespan, so they are considered the most vulnerable to being killed by 'the Poison that gives them permanent death' from the Annihilators.

What are the Annihilators?

Hi! I hope you don't mind this, but I love talking about books, and Long Live Evil is worth talking about/discussion. XD I know I was pretty harsh on it but I did enjoy it too, enough to really sink my teeth into it, as it were.

It being a critique of how fiction makes us romanticize things we wouldn't tolerate definitely has weight! There's an entire discussion about it on page 7.

"If the Emperor were real, he would be horrifying." "Luckily, he's not real," Rae snapped back. "Everyone who thinks books will make women date assholes underestimates us. If stories hypnotize people, why aren't people terrified movies will turn boys into drag racing assassins? I don't want to fix the guy, I want to watch the murder show." "Stories lived on problems, there was a reason Star Wars wasn't Star Peace" "It's about troubling patterns in media, not a specific story."

Though honestly I read this as a sign it didn't intend to critique that romanticization all that much, a little nod to the reader. Especially because Key doesn't actually know she was trying to save him. And Alice, the one talking about troubling media patterns, doesn't get to expand on her position.

I don't think it was intended to be a played straight western isekai fantasy at all. In the acknowledgements, the Author said:

"Inspiration comes from all over the world, and while I couldn't write a traditional isekai I was influenced by the genre, and am grateful: a favorite is Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation"

This is a very, very specific type of isekai. It's an Otome Villainess Isekai. I don't know if you've read a lot of Isekai/portal fantasy as a genre, but Otome Villainess Isekai specifically is a genre all about subversion/critique of typical isekai and fantasy tropes/romanticization. My critique was through that lens, hence why I think it's still valid if it was just supposed to critique/dissect fantasy tropes and romanticization, because I approached it as if that was a part of what it was trying to do, as an OVI. It's an extremely typical OVI.

Definitely, it seems you approached it in a much different way, which is super interesting. For either of our interpretations the marketing definitely gives the impression that its supposed to be subversive and also played straight.

I feel like people like Muu overall but I also found that a lot of Muu analysis and fan depictions feel kinda shallow? I try not to rag but I always feel like there's a lot unexplored with Muu. I have a personal hatred of the Milgram Comment Section (I'm an Amane fan and 90% of the comments are utter bullshit to me.) and it really gets to me how people take her as Just a character who seemed to be a victim but is actually a bully- like. Come on- if Muu was actually good at manipulating people she wouldn't be in this prison, she would still Be the Queen.

That and Muu's cycle motif, princess themes, victimhood, manipulation, her life in a place where friendship cannot grow, etc etc. Is super interesting and deserves to be explored more! She's a fascinating character with a lot of nuance and interesting ideas to explore and I dearly adore her.

Uh....everything? That's partially a joke but also I hear that outside of the Tumblr spaces I frequent a lot of the things i like the most about Milgram aren't talked much. It's why I wrote multiple posts about saviors and Amane and cats and all the other stuff. I couldn't find them so I just...wrote it myself lol.

I think there should be more exploration on what Milgram and the characters are exploring Thematically and the overarching themes of the series as a whole. There's so Much about these cyclical events and power and dehumanization and its so good and I Need More People to sit in a circle with me and think about Cat Amane Momose!

This relates to 18 a bit...I don't enjoy exploring the...murder...that much...ironic I know but I kinda see Milgram analysis as like. Certain people taking care of certain points of interests because that's what they know the best.

I don't think any single person can analyze everything, so I really do appreciate the work the people who look at these crime scenes and figure out what else might be going on do! This isn't a indictment against them or anything. I treasure this kind of analysis dearly because I don't really know where to start with that kind of stuff.

However, I do think when most people think Analysis this sort of stuff is the first thing they think of. Which again isn't a bad thing but I just think there's other things to explore!
