I keep thinking about the idea of 'what if Lucy went with Mina to Budapest'. Because I'm the sort of person who just likes aus probably a little too much.

(this is not me writing anything specific or anything but just wondering what that initial thought process would be like. It could be fun to visit in more detail idk.)

Lucy knew something was wrong in Whitby, more than the anxiety she'd already been dealing with. She knew she was feeling tired, that her neck hurt, that she'd had that awful nightmare the night she walked to the bench, and she also knew she'd be going home soon to her house where she should, by all accounts, feel safe.

But Mina was going to be going on a long journey to a foreign country, alone, to meet her fiance that she'd heard nothing of for weeks, who was... well, feeling poorly is a kind way to refer to brain fever. And Lucy wanted to go home and see Arthur, but maybe something in her, be it intuition or survival instinct, made her decide, no, Mina is my dearest friend and she has been helping me and supporting me throughout our time together, it is my turn to do the same for her. Her mother may not understand completely but Arthur, who was so kind, certainly would. It was an impulsive decision to go with Mina, and the nightmares that changed to ones of frustration and anger certainly fueled her on more.

Leaving with Mina would save Lucy's life, but Renfield was already awaiting his master, and while he is not a doctor of medicine, a strange illness cropping up among the ladies in town could compel Seward to reach out to his colleague Van Helsing, particularly if the illness strikes the Westenra household maids (because Seward is still not over it, after all).

And perhaps there would be some sort of recognition of something between Lucy and Jonathan. A story where Lucy lives does not mean that Dracula makes enemies. Maybe the heroes of light would take longer to gather together, but I think they still would. With two survivors of the Count, instead of one.

THIS is how you do it:

More writers should consider just not telling their readers all of shit. Just don’t tell them stuff. What’s that monster? Fuck if you’ll find out. How did that weird as hell landscape marker come to be? Wouldn’t you like to know. How does the magic work? Just believe it does, motherfucker.

Readers don’t need to know everything. In fact, I absolutely advocate for not telling them certain stuff. If the characters don’t know, neither do they. If the narrator is omniscient? Lol no they aren’t.

Is this necessary for every story? Probably not. There’s plenty of good stories you could write while explaining all of it. But leaving those gaps, leaving those holes, can bring a story to life. Sometimes things happen in life that just… happen. Fucked if anyone knows why. Sometimes information gets lost. Sometimes information is hidden. But even beyond that, it expands the narrative.

If you explain when and why and how the murder monster became a murder monster, well… that’s forever set in stone now. Now they know. But if you leave it blank, absent of explanation, any explanation… it becomes an unknown. It forces your audience to wonder. Makes them think. That, more than you might think, makes a story get into your audience’s head, and once you’re there, you can make some real impacts.

So yeah, tell a story. But sometimes? Don’t tell your readers something. Make them fill in the blanks themselves.

I've almost reached my breaking point with this genocide in Ukraine. I'm older than most Tumblr users, so I was being yelled at in university tutorials in the early 00s for talking about the Holodomor, and being told that "If it happened, Ukrainians deserved it for being Nazis".

I was out there in 2007 when we had the worldwide march for the Holodomor to be recognised as a genocide, only for so many countries (the USA being one of them) to tell us that they won't do it because it might upset russia.

I remember when russia invaded in 2014 and Obama said it wasn't his business, and that russia can decide what happens in Ukraine. And then he sent Ukraine fucking helmets and "hygiene kits" instead of the military aid he was supposed to.

My family in Donetsk walked out of their homes with their lives packed in plastic shopping bags nearly eleven years ago. But people prefer to believe the russian lies that Donbas wants to be part of russia.

I remember sitting at home on the 17th of July 2014, hearing about russia shooting down MH17, and feeling my blood run cold because the initial reports said the aeroplane was full of Americans. Being so sure that the USA might finally live up to the Budapest Memorandum and get involved in the war.

Of course they didn't.

And then the Malaysians went and protested at the Ukrainian embassy, as if they were to blame for being invaded by their genocidal neighbour.

I remember being at a protest at the russian embassy in Canberra just after Crimea was annexed, and the only people who turned up for us were other Ukrainians. Soon after there were massive protests for Palestine and BLM from Melbourne to Dublin and beyond. Ukrainians are too white for leftists and too foreign for right-wingers to care about.

More people dumped buckets of ice on their heads than supported us.

I spent Easter 2016 in a hotel in Ukraine. 8.5 years ago I was the only guest who wasn't a soldier on leave from the war.

We're always on our own. We can't get the bodies back because russia has colonised the area. I have a relative who was moved on from fighting in Vovchansk because there was no point fighting for another city that no longer exists. My relative who was taken hostage in Mariupol was starved and tortured for 2.5 years.

And then last week our city's magazine had a three-page interview with the russian ambassador, explaining why his country "has" to commit genocide in Ukraine. The editor laughed at my aunt when she phoned to register a complaint.
