Why I use Google Docs
So when I started my A Levels I realised pretty quickly that I was not going to be able to only handwrite notes and keep up with everything. Therefore, I knew I needed to find a solution. I decided to try using Google Docs - which I had never used before - and I really quickly realised that it was exactly what I was looking for!
I now use it for almost all of my digital notes and it is a lifesaver for keeping on top of all my content-heavy subjects - particularly history.
I also use it to make all my essay plans and it has helped me develop a notetaking system that is perfect for my humanities subjects because it promotes making links between topics and deepens understanding.
Hopefully, these next few slides will tell you all you need to know about taking notes on Google Docs!
What I love
It's completely free!
Simple interface which isn't distracting
I personally also think it looks really professional and I always feel more Academic™️ when I use it compared to Word
Automatically saves to Google Drive when you are working online - no more losing work accidentally because you forgot to save
Syncs across all my devices immediately - which means I can type them on my laptop at home and revise my notes just from my phone while travelling without having to think about sending notes
Access using a browser so no need to install software
There are loads of great templates to use which makes your notes really easy to format
There are also lots of add ons to make sure you have everything you need
When you use titles and headings (which is way easier to use than in Word I've found), it automatically creates a document outline which makes your document easily navigable
You can work on documents collaboratively by simply sharing a link which is so useful for any projects or group work
There is unlimited storage
What I dislike
The spell and grammar check isn't as sophisticated as in Word
It can take some time to get used to some of the features because they are slightly different from other notetaking sites
It is more difficult to share as a document with other people, such as teachers. You will most likely need to convert to a Word file
You need to get add-ons for some functions which are just normal in Word and other notetaking sites - the one that personally irritates me the most is adding accents to letters
You can't link Docs with any other cloud-storage service. If you already use another service and want to share a Docs file through that service, you need to download the file and then upload it to your preferred cloud service
Although you can use it offline (you might have seen some people say you can't), you can't create a new document and you do perhaps run the risk of things not saving properly
Overall, however, the advantages hugely outweigh these disadvantages and honestly most of these 'issues' don't really bother me!
Templates
The templates on Google Docs are probably one of my favourite features! There are lots of great built-in templates that you can choose from so it is really easy to set up your notes in a way that is organised and will look nice. You can also simply search google for more templates. Moreover, it is really easy to personalise and edit these templates to make them work for you!
I personally use a mixture of different 'class notes' templates and 'lesson plan' ones because I think they work the same. What I really like is how each has a colour and font scheme so it is easy to distinguish between different subjects. They also all have pre-made heading styles as part of the notes to help you easily form your document outline.
My Notetaking System: Cascading Bullet Points
In my experience, this is the most effective notetaking system for humanities/essay-based subjects and I've not found a site where it works as well as on Google Docs. But what are cascading bullet points?
Essentially, the system uses typical bullet points to separate and organise information but also adds development. For each new level of information, you ident so you see the progression of the argument. You keep doing this with every new stage of information. I swear by this system for notetaking because it forces you to essentially organise your notes into essay-style paragraphs (point, evidence, explanation etc.) but still is in useful note form. It is also easy to create comprehensive essay plans because your notes are already organised into key ideas with development.
Example:
Heading
1st main point
Sub-point
Development
Definition
Specific Example
Sub-point
Argument against
Specific Example
Significance
Why is Google Docs so good for this system?
Basically, the bullet points on Google Docs just work really well and there are never any formating issues - unlike what I've experienced in Word for example. Furthermore, the notetaking templates and the way the information is on the page is ideal for this system.

🍄✨🌈✨🍄✨🌈✨🍄✨🌈✨🍄
****CONTENT WARNING**** alcohol consumption, mentions of drug use
You’re simply buying magic mushrooms from Harry. However, if you keep running into each other, is it going to stay that simple?
word count: just under 5k
**September 15th, 1977, Los Angeles, California**
The brakes on your car squeal as you pull into the last empty spot along the curb and shift into park. The music from your radio comes to an abrupt stop when you turn the key back to shut the engine off. Your head hits the headrest behind you before you empty your lungs into the silence.
Cars drive past on the street to your left. It’s just past five thirty, so all of the after work traffic is in full swing.
You’ve been avoiding this errand for two weeks now. There’s a record that you’ve been wanting to get your hands on ever since one of your coworkers played it at a work function. After looking through shelf after shelf in all of your favorite shops in L.A., and even making some calls to shops in surrounding areas, they’ve all come up short.
This seems to be your very last resort. Right across the street, sandwiched between a donut shop and a hair salon, is Jupiter House Records. From what you remember, this shop has a really good selection and variety, but the handful of unpleasant interactions you’ve had with the owner have been enough to make you look somewhere else. You’ve been stubbornly avoiding this place for years. Now you have a whole other reason for not wanting to spend hours in this store digging through to find your favorites or discover new ones.
Harry works here.
You haven’t seen him since he showed up on your doorstep to return your address book. The conversation you had with Jenny when she came home from work that evening plays through your mind again.
Both of you plop down on opposite sides of the couch in your living room. You sigh and take a big sip from your glass of wine before explaining the whole interaction to her, starting from the moment you opened the door to the moment you saw him drive away in his car.
Jenny grins. The only sound in the room comes from the ticking of the clock on the wall as you wait for her response. “I think he likes you.”
You squint. “That’s what you’re taking away from all of that?”
Her eyes widen and she springs forward, almost sloshing the wine out of her glass when she sets it on the coffee table. “Oh, so you’re telling me he saw the ‘If lost please return to..’ in your address book and decided to make a trip to our house to return it to you in person, when he could have just sent it in the mail?”
You can feel a crease forming between your eyebrows and you take in a sharp breath, fully prepared to counter her point, but she barrels through.
“And he wanted to ‘make sure you were okay’. Out of all the dealers that we’ve met, how many have just shown up at our houses to check up on us? Zero.”
You press your lips together. You can’t argue the fact that this alone sets Harry apart. However, this doesn’t mean he likes you. Maybe it just means that he’s the kind of person that goes the extra mile for the people he does business with. He could have easily left you and Jen sitting on the sidewalk after the concert, but he decided to help, to do what any other good-natured person would do.
“And let’s not forget how he threw the paper on the doorstep so you wouldn’t have to walk all the way down the driveway.” Jenny clutches her chest and swoons.
Scoffing at the way she’s adding dramatics, you challenge, “How do you know he didn’t show up here to see you?”
“He didn’t ask about me, did he?”
“No,” you begrudgingly mumble into your glass.
She grabs her glass from the coffee table and gives you a knowing look. She’s made her point, and the more it lingers like the aftertaste of wine, the more conflicted you become.
You’ve spent more idle moments than you’d like to admit since then thinking about the night you were sitting outside of the Forum. Thinking about what possessed you to lean in and study his face so closely. Was it solely the effects of the drugs? If that’s the case, then why do you want to go back to that moment so badly? And why didn’t Harry pull away? Did he really blush when you were staring at him? Was his heart really racing when you gave him a hug, or was that just your wild imagination?
The honking of a car brings you out of your thoughts. You take a deep breath and trill your lips. There’s a slight break in traffic. If you don’t get out of your car and cross the street now, you fear you’ll stay here stuck in your thoughts all evening.
With a huff, you rip your keys from the ignition and push your door open. You cross the street, walking with a purpose, and make it to the sidewalk.
The full strength of your nerves doesn’t hit you until you’re just in front of the store and the glass door swings out with a simultaneous chime of a bell. Your heart drops from your chest to your stomach and you freeze on the sidewalk to avoid colliding with the man exiting the shop.
When he stops to hold the door open for you, it takes you a moment to gather yourself. You mutter a ‘thank you’ as your hand firmly grips the cool metal of the door handle. Almost like you’re using it as a crutch to get you through the threshold.
Your shoes meet the shaggy mustard yellow carpet, matted down by years of customer traffic.
A woman that looks about your age greets you from behind a counter to your right. You return her half smile and she goes back to flipping through the magazine on the counter in front of her. The nametag on her floral shirt reads ‘Nora’. Behind her is a door with a red ‘EMPLOYEES ONLY’ sign taped to it.
Underneath the counter that she’s leaning on is a glass case holding records and cassette tapes, all marked ‘deluxe’ or ‘limited edition’. Spread out next to them are a few t-shirts, buttons, and stickers with the store logo printed on them.
You weren’t expecting it to be so quiet. Right now it seems like you and Nora are the only people in the store. The coast is clear. You can relax a bit. The adrenaline rush you were feeling on the other side of the door has now been replaced by the whirring of the air vents and David Bowie’s “Queen Bitch” playing over the speakers.
You turn to your left to take in the rest of the store, meandering into the first row of record shelves.
The large window taking up the entire front wall lets in plenty of evening sun that warms your skin through your shirt. More shelves, each one three tiers deep, line the rest of the walls and create aisles in the middle of the room.
Signs hanging from the ceiling above each section indicate the genre. The one you’re standing next to is labeled ‘new releases’ with a smaller font that reads ‘alpha by artist’. Other sections are labeled country, rock, disco, classical. Your eyes land on the back corner of the store where the funk, soul, and jazz sections are.
You make your way over while pulling your sleeves up to your elbows.
Unsure of which specific section the record you’re looking for will be in, you decide to start on one end of the corner and search all the way through to the other in hopes of finding it.
You fall into a familiar routine of searching through the first tier, then the second, leaning over to search through the top tier, and then taking a step over to start the whole process again.
Once you’re about halfway through the soul section, the bell on the door chimes again. You can’t be bothered to look, not wanting to lose your place.
“Hey, sorry I’m late.”
Goddamnit. Your hands freeze their movements and your heart begins to race all over again. You know exactly who just walked through that door.
“Harry,” Nora admonishes, “I finally have a date after two months and you’re gonna make me late.”
Harry’s mumbled response is drowned out by the loud creak of the door behind the counter, but judging by Nora’s gasp and the unmistakable thwack of a magazine, maybe it’s better left between the two of them.
You begin to slowly file through records again, this time not paying much attention to what you’re doing. More-so to give your hands something to do and appear busy while trying to hear the rest of their conversation.
Nora sighs, “It’s been really slow today. Hopefully it’s a slow night for you.” All you hear is some shuffling before she adds, “Oh, boss wanted me to remind you not to play the music too loud.”
“Did he? Dunno what he’s talking about,” Harry says, feigning innocence.
Nora laughs, “Whatever.”
The next thing you hear is the jingling of keys and footsteps across the carpet.
Harry raises his voice from the back room, “Are you gonna punch out?”
“Will you do it for me? I’ve gotta go.”
“Sure.”
The bell on the door rings and Nora yells from the doorway, “I left three boxes in the back for you to restock!”
“Oh thanks,” Harry yells back with sarcastic enthusiasm.
“Bye,” she sings as she walks out.
The door slams behind her. The bell’s high pitched ringing seems to hang in the air.
Silence falls on the room when the song playing over the speakers stops suddenly, making the room quiet enough to hear the traffic outside. You hear a needle drop and after a few seconds, the opening guitar notes of “Can You Get to That” by Funkadelic begin to play. The corners of your mouth turn down to fight a smile when the volume is promptly turned up much louder than what it was when you walked in.
You take a sharp breath in, realizing that you’re going to have to turn around at some point. Surely you can’t just stay in this corner and keep your back turned to him until the place closes. You don’t know what you’re going to say to him. Will he even recognize you after not seeing you for weeks?
There’s not much time to decide what to do when the sound of footsteps approaching on the carpet is getting closer to you.
Your heart leaps into your throat when you hear his voice.
“Finding everything alright?”
You turn your head to the left.
Harry is standing a few shelves apart from you with a box propped between the shelf and his hip. The sunlight from the window shines through the ends of his hair and the sleeves of his white t-shirt when he grabs a record from the box and reaches out to carefully wedge it back into the right place. You scan down to where his shirt is tucked into a pair of dark brown corduroy pants, and further down to see a pair of dirty white sneakers peeking out from the ends of the flares. When he turns his head to the box again, you notice that his mustache is significantly thinner from the last time you saw each other.
Heat rushes up your neck and onto your face when he glances up at you.
His hand pauses in the air and his eyebrows raise slightly before the corners of his mouth do the same, revealing just a hint of his dimples. His head tilts back and he blinks in surprise. “Oh… hi.”
You let out a breath that you didn’t know you were holding when he addresses you by name. Mirroring his smile and turning your shoulders to face him, you reply, “Hi. I… didn’t know you worked here.”
A flat out lie, but thankfully he doesn’t seem too suspect about it.
He frowns and looks down at his shirt, pulling it out in front of him to reveal his nametag. “Hm. M’ afraid I do,” he says flatly.
A breathy chuckle leaves you, amused at the way he’s effortlessly making sarcastic remarks like this with you and his coworker. Quite different from the stiffly awkward interactions you’ve had with him. It’s like you’re seeing him in his natural environment. Him being at ease is having the same effect on you.
“Do you need help finding anything?” he asks, continuing his previous actions, this time with a soft smile.
“Actually, yes,” you clear your throat, “I’m looking for this specific record. I’ve looked all over for it by now. I’m pretty sure it should be in one of these sections if you have it, but...” you trail off as you cast a glance over your shoulder to the shelves you have yet to go through.
“I can take a look in our inventory. Save you some time?”
Of course. Why didn’t you just ask about that when you first walked in? “Sure. That would be great.”
Harry hoists the box into the crook of his arm with a faint grunt and you follow him over to the counter. After setting the box at the end of the countertop, he walks to the other end and reaches underneath the register, pulling out a large beat up binder with ‘inventory’ written on the spine.
It lands on the counter with a plop, probably due to the huge stack of paper inside, separated by multicolored tabs.
“What’s the artist’s name?” he asks after opening the binder to the first page.
“The Equatics.”
He pulls on the ‘A’ tab and folds it over.
“Oh, sorry, it’s Equatics with an ‘E’.”
He tuts and shakes his head before tracing his finger down and pulling on the ‘E’ tab. “Equatics with an ‘E’,” he mumbles.
You fold your lips between your teeth.
Now you’re thankful for the loud music filling the room as you’re standing wordlessly in front of the counter watching him flip through the pages of the inventory binder. Hair hangs in front of his face as his head is tilted down to scan over the pages, all filled with scribbles, arrows, and notes in the margins written in blue, black, and red ink. It all means nothing to you, especially looking at it upside down. You can only imagine how tedious it must be to keep up with.
With his left hand pressed flat against the counter, the expanse of his arm is right in front of you. Hopefully he can’t feel your eyes surveying his tattoos, at least the ones you can see from this angle. A small cross on his hand, an anchor on his wrist, the tail of a mermaid, a delicate rose near his elbow, a heart just beneath the hem of his t-shirt.
He inhales sharply and clears his throat into his fist, “Looks like we do have it. It’s actually in our as-is section.” As he’s speaking, he spins the binder in your direction and slides his finger almost to the bottom of the page to point out where it lists the artist, album title, and the section it’s in.
Despite the relief that comes with finally finding something you’ve been searching for, your face falls a bit. You know that ‘as-is’ is often just a nice way of saying that something is heavily used. “Does that mean it’s… damaged?”
Harry hums and tilts his head to the side, not meeting your eyes until he responds.
“Not always. Honestly we’re pretty much required to put stuff in that section even if it’s just the sleeve that’s messed up. Sometimes the record itself is still in great condition. You can still find some good stuff in there.”
“Okay. Where’s the as-is section?” You don’t remember seeing a sign for it when you walked in, unless you just overlooked it.
“Right. It's, uh, down this hallway here. Kind of hidden.”
Harry rounds the end of the counter and you follow him over to a doorway covered with a ruby red beaded curtain. Harry pulls it to the side and steps through first, pausing to hold the curtain back for you. You mutter a ‘thanks’ and step into a long hallway that extends to your right.
He releases the curtain, letting the beads crash together, before starting down the hallway.
Both walls are lined with floor to ceiling shelves full of cassette tapes, with each row of shelving just tall enough to fit their size. There’s so much packed in this long stretch of narrow space, like a condensed, fluorescent-lit cornucopia.
“I had no idea all of this was back here,” you comment, slightly dumbfounded that you probably would have overlooked this hallway entirely if it hadn’t been pointed out to you.
“Yeah, lots of people think it’s off limits because of the curtain. I need to put some signs up or something.”
As you’re walking behind Harry, you realize you were too distracted before to see print on the back of his shirt, let alone make out what it said. Bold purple font reads ‘MY MIND IS UP ON THE MOUNTAINS’ with a smaller font at the bottom that reads ‘(and i didn’t even have to climb)’. The words are surrounded by a sun, a few flowers, a picture of a mountain, and two mushrooms on the bottom.
A smirk creeps onto the corner of your mouth at how incredibly on the nose it seems for him. It makes you wonder if anyone here knows about his other job, or if he’s hiding in plain sight.
Once you’re both about a third of the way down the hallway, there’s a gap in the shelves on the right filled by a nondescript doorway.
“Here we are.” Harry stops and reaches on the other side of the doorway to flip the light switch before stepping back and gesturing for you to walk in first.
You step into a small room. It only contains two long folding tables pushed against opposite walls. Rather than fancy, neat shelves, the records here are stored in milk crates and cardboard boxes lined up on the tops of the tables. It almost looks like you’ve come across a garage sale.
You furrow your eyebrows and purse your lips to the side as you walk up to the first box at the end of the table closest to the door. When you reach in, Harry speaks up.
“I could help you look for a bit, if you want.”
Harry’s now leaning against the doorframe, running a hand against his jaw. Do you see a slight tinge of pink creeping onto his cheeks as well?
“I don’t really have anything better to do. Plus this section... isn’t really organized,” he continues.
You bring your attention back to the box in front of you, a sharp breath escaping your nose when you turn the Johnny Cash record back to reveal a Mozart one behind it. “I can see that.”
“But if you want to look around by yourself I understand, I can leave you to it,” he says, already slightly backing up into the hallway.
“No, I wouldn’t mind the company. You could take that table and I’ll take this one?” Your own words surprise you as you’re speaking them. Moments ago you had been dreading crossing paths with him again, but now that you’re having a moment that feels comfortable, you find yourself wanting him to stick around longer.
A curiosity is growing in your mind, wondering if Harry is feeling the same way, if that’s why he offered to help, if that’s why he slowly joins you in the room and mirrors your position at the table behind you so you’re not standing back to back.
You both search through the crates without a word, only the faint sound of the music from the front room coming down the hallway. Meanwhile, your thoughts are going back and forth between Jenny insisting that this man likes you and talking yourself out of that idea, insisting that he’s simply being nice, doing his job.
“How have you been?”
The question catches you off guard, taking a moment to realize that he’s actually said it out loud. “Um. I’ve been good. Nothing exciting going on, just working a lot. You?”
“I’m alright, thanks. I’ve been working a lot too. Where do you work? Don’t think I’ve asked you.”
“Do you ever listen to KIIS-FM?”
“Yes?” He responds, possibly thinking that you’re trying to shift the subject.
You smile to yourself, “You’re welcome. I’m a sound engineer there.”
“Oh shit,” he says enthusiastically. “That’s really cool. Do you like it?”
Briefly turning to look at him, your smile grows wider when you read the interest and excitement on his face. An expression you’re seeing for the first time in him, and it's because of something about you. Your heart flutters and you turn back to your table.
“Most days, I do. It can be a real dick fest sometimes though. Not in a good way.”
Despite mumbling the last sentence, Harry seems to still pick it up.
He barks out a laugh. You turn, eyes wide, to see his shoulders shaking and him covering his mouth with his hand.
When he turns back to you, clearly making a lot of effort to compose himself, he places his hand over his heart. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Oh yeah, the way you laughed really convinced me,” you lightheartedly roll your eyes.
“No it’s just… the way you said it was really funny,” he says, chuckling through his words. He continues, “So you studied engineering at UCLA then?”
Your eyebrows crease as his words hang in the air. You guess it’s not wild to assume that people who live in L.A. have attended UCLA. However, since you’ve never mentioned any kind of schooling to Harry, you can only gather that he’s making that assumption from the UCLA t-shirt you were wearing when he showed up at your house.
“I thought I remembered Jenny mentioning that you both went there.” His tone is cautious now, hesitant even. Like he’s picked up on his own blunder.
You decide to brush over it and simply nod, “Yeah, that’s how we met, actually.”
You return to looking through the crate in front of you. You gasp when you see the familiar red cover of the album you’re looking for.
You feel Harry turn around behind you. “Find it?”
You pull it from the crate. The bold red cover with a blue-grey circle in the middle, running your finger over the lines and arrows creating rings around it with a few stars placed here and there. You turn to smile at Harry, holding up the record in place of an answer, too excited to form words. The paper dust liner crinkles as you slide the plastic disc from the sleeve. Holding it by the edges, you tilt it to the left, to the right, and hold it up closer to the light to inspect it. Your shoulders visibly fall when you spot a long scratch running from the middle to the edge.
“Oh no,” you whisper, bringing the record closer to your face. You lightly run your finger over the scratch. It doesn’t feel rough, you actually can’t feel it at all. A fraction of hope is restored knowing that the scratch isn’t too deep into the grooves. However, there’s no way to know if it’s unplayable unless you actually try to play it.
Harry seems to read your mind. “You could test it out on the player up front if you want.”
“Really?” You spin around, seeming to shock him judging by the way his upper body slightly jerks back. “I mean-- I would appreciate that. If it’s not too much--”
He shakes his head, “It’s not a problem.” He walks toward the door where he waits for you to gather everything up.
The front of the store quiet once you both emerge from the other side of the curtain.
“I liked your choice of work music, by the way,” you say once you’ve both made it back to the counter, hugging your record to your chest.
“Oh yeah, Maggot Brain. S’ a fun album.”
You lean forward to rest your forearms against the smooth wood of the counter, waiting while he takes the record off the player to make room for yours. “Do you listen to a lot of funk music?”
“I do. I’ve never really understood why some people aren’t into it. What’s not to love, right?”
“Exactly! My coworker showed me this album and I think it’s one of my favorites now. It was recorded by this group of high school students in seventy two. They won some studio time in a contest or something and they really made the most of it.”
“Hm. M’ excited to listen to it now.” He stretches his hand out, “I’ll take that.”
You hand over the album. “Could you start it on track two? I think that’s my favorite one.”
“Sure.” He places the record on the player and carefully moves the needle in place.
A warm feeling washes over you when you hear the familiar soft guitar and drum beat at the beginning of the song. You both stand in place as the bass line comes in and all of the instruments’ parts crescendo.
Once the beat drops and the main guitar comes in, Harry turns to you with raised eyebrows and an impressed smile.
“Amazing, right?” you ask through a chuckle.
“It’s really good.”
“I know! And I don’t notice the scratch at all. It sounds perfect.”
“S’ exciting. I’m glad you found it.”
He walks over to where you are and starts to inspect the sleeve, turning it over to read the back. He adopts a similar position as you, forearms resting on the counter as he taps his fingers on his bicep to the beat of the song.
“That guitar part is amazing.”
He’s leaning close enough now that you can see a hint of stubble along his jawline and his upper lip. His cologne, a swirl of vanilla and something else you can’t quite put your finger on. He looks up when you don’t respond and you avert your eyes immediately.
“I think so too,” you mumble.
“I find it crazy how something really amazing can be right in front of you for so long and you never notice it or you just keep missing it.” A pause. “This has been in the back room for… I don’t even know how long, and I probably never would have listened to it if you hadn’t been looking for it.” Another brief pause as he scratches at his chin, seeming to be in deep thought. He shakes his head, “I don’t know. Maybe that’s weird, but I think about that kind of thing a lot.”
“I don’t think it’s weird. That can happen with… so many things, too.”
“Like people.”
His eyes quickly dance over your face. You swear they linger on your lips for a second before returning to meet your eyes.
“Like people,” you repeat. “And I think it is good to think about that stuff from time to time but… it can get overwhelming. Sometimes it could even distract you from the things you’re enjoying now.”
Your eyes do the same motions, glancing all over his face, lingering on his lips, and then back to his eyes. This feels extremely reminiscent of the night you were sitting outside of the Forum, when you were practically nose to nose after you had taken a whiff of his hair. You had been telling yourself that the gravitational pull you felt that night was solely induced by the shrooms. However, you seem to be feeling it again now as your eyes trace over the plane of his cheek, the tip of his nose, the arch of his lip.
A slight crease between his eyebrows slightly contradicts the almost tender look in his eyes. He opens his mouth like he’s about to speak.
Unfortunately he’s interrupted by the shrill ringing of the phone on the wall behind him.
You flinch at the sudden noise and Harry huffs in annoyance before clearing his throat into his fist.
He walks over to the player to turn the music down before answering the phone with a simple, clipped “Jupiter House.”
He covers the receiver with his hand and mouths ‘sorry’ to you before holding up a finger and going into the back room, closing the door until it's just cracked behind him.
You release a heavy sigh and rub your temples.
After a short conversation, Harry comes back and hangs up the phone.
“Sorry about that,” he mumbles, untangling the cord from his fingers. “Are you happy with this, then?” He asks, pointing to the record player.
“Uh- yes. Yes. I am.”
You go through the transaction in silence, watching the way Harry slides your record into a brown paper bag and the way he makes your change. At this moment, you’re wishing Harry came with a cartoon thought bubble over his head so you could know what he’s thinking right now. What exactly did he mean when he said ‘like people’? What was he about to say before he was interrupted?
He carefully folds and creases the paper, but instead of handing it over, he pauses, hands poised on the top of the bag.
“Sorry, I forgot something.” He opens the bag again and crouches down behind the counter.
“What--”
Before you can get your question out, his hand reaches into the glass case between you, hovering over the merchandise that you noticed when you first walked in. He picks out a button and a sticker. You hear them drop into the bag before he pops up from behind the counter.
“You didn’t have to--”
“I know.”
His smile and his voice are reassuring, absolving your confusion in a matter of seconds.
“Thanks for your help. It was nice running into you,” you smile, taking the bag and holding the record to your chest once again.
“Take care. I’ll see you around.” He smiles.
You back away from the counter and push open the door. The bell rings in your ears one last time.

Unbreathing Vacuum
I got an ADHD inspiration to write a short DS9 fic off a shitpost about Star Trek-but-all-the-computers-run-windows-98, so I wrote a thing about Odo and the crew's reaction to his seeming death. (This was written for twitter, so it's gonna have some weird paragraph breaks, sorry about that)
Odo is tracking down a Bolian weapons dealer with as many morals as hair follicles when he finally corners him in a cargo bay. It goes south, quickly, as it turns out weapons dealers have access to a lot of weapons.
His Bajoran security officer is laying down suppressing fire as Odo sneaks around behind the Bolian who is trying out a wide variety of strange weapons, colored beams shooting across the room like we're in a deadly disco of death.
Odo reforms into a grumpy humanoid behind the blue man group reject, shedding his Andorian Ice Fox form that let him cross the sea of crates without detection. Odo grumbles "I think that's enough, don't you?" as the Bolian turns and screams.
The football shaped object in his hands that was beeping increasingly frantic pitches drops to the floor, and he dives for it. Odo looks down in surprise, then recognizes what it is, but it's slightly too late, as timers on Klingon grenades are not known for their accuracy.
There's a flash of light and pressure as it detonates, and the cargo bay wall cracks, and the one sound no one wants to hear in a space station begins: the high pitched hissing of air rapidly leaving.
Odo gets to his feet in that uncanny way he sometimes does when he forgets to move like a being who has bones. He simply transitions from a body on the floor to a standing vaguely humanoid form. The Bolian, being closer to the blast, appears dead, or at least soon to be so.
He turns to his security officer to tell her to go call Chief O'Brien, when the hissing wall suddenly groans with the sound of bending metal, and the wall gives way completely. An entire semi-rectangular wall panel is ejected into the black, taking Odo and the dead Bolian with it
The security officer, nearer to the door, slams the access panel and dives through the door before it can finish opening, and rips off a barely attached wall panel to yank on the manual bulkhead release.
The door slams shut with typical Cardassian efficiency, not caring or bothering to check if there might be a limb or two in the way. The hurricane wind of all the station's air trying to escape is suddenly ended, and deafening white noise gives way to the low hum of the station.
Moments later, the crew up in Ops are reacting to the news of Odo's death in almost comically predictable ways.
Kira, the career soldier, is angry. She's seen many friends die in front of her, and she never let herself become numb to it. She's swearing at Odo in ways that the universal translator is so good at eliding, saying she always told him he was taking too many risks.
Just because he won't mind when someone stabs him doesn't mean he's invulnerable, she told him, and he, as always, almost-smiled in the way he only seems to do around her and grumbled about how he'd be careful.
The young doctor is barely holding it together. Kira's lashing out but it's a controlled sort of anger, a way she keeps a handle on the pain of losing people. Bashir, the eternal optimist to Odo's eternal pessimist, doesn't really believe in death, a strange trait for a doctor.
O'Brien is focusing himself on technical issues to avoid having to think about the emotional ones. What kind of weapon could have taken out a reinforced cargo bay wall? Had it been damaged before and incorrect repaired? He makes a note to do a full check of structural integrity
Dax has seemingly no reaction, but that's almost to be expected. You have a different outlook on death when you've died before, multiple times. As a near-immortal you see many people and make many friends, and nearly all of them will die long before you.
You have to learn to accept it, or it will kill you by inches. One of the downsides of seemingly endless life is there's a lot of time to mourn.
The commander is definitely feeling the impact of the loss, especially having had far too much experience with this particular kind of loss before. He flashes back to that time he always, in some way, still resides in...
When an alien force shows up and starts carving your ship into digestible chunks, you quickly become intimately familiar with the effects of sudden decompression on the humanoid body. It's not pretty, it's not as fast as you'd hope, and it's something you never forget.
He maintains his composure, leaning on his command training, and asks Kira to make a list of security officers she'd suggest promoting to Chief of Security. He thinks for a moment, realizes Odo had no family, and says he'll send a note to Dr. Pol
He turns back to go into his office when there's a dull thudding noise, and a sort of faint tink-tink-tink caused by the flexing of glass that happens with even the thickest of reinforced viewport.
He looks around in confusion, and Dax suddenly points at one of the high-up viewports. Floating outside the window, looking only slightly more annoyed than his resting "I hate life" face, is Odo.
It feels like something outside of a horror movie, a ghost floating silently outside a second story window, because humanoids don't just happily move around in the harsh void of space without needing a suit or a forcefield to keep them breathing.
But Odo isn't like most humanoids, after all. He's not a humanoid, for one. He's more a confounding self-propelled pile of goo that sometimes feels like pretending to be a humanoid shape.
This is made more obvious by the fact that he's only half there. His lower half is not legs, but a shimmering stretch of undifferentiated shapeshifter material, in order to hold onto an access handle tightly enough to give him the leverage to knock on a window.
Seeing he's got the attention of the crew, he pulls his hands from the window and starts attempting to sign to them. Kira's the only one with any experience in Bajoran sign language, and the best she can make out is something like "he broke his... Weasel? Columns him... Boat?"
He sighs, rolling his eyes, like only a shapeshifter really can. The sigh is silent of course, but if anyone could grumble in disappointment in the vacuum of space, it would be Odo.
His hands blur together as he shapeshifts them into a new form: a small flat panel, with Bajoran lettering in a large block font, perhaps a little too blocky as his aggravation is coming across even in typographical form.
COMBADGE DAMAGED BEAM ME ABOARD
Dax and O'Brien quickly confer, taking a painfully long moment to figure out how to lock onto something that is neither wearing a working combadge or reads as a life sign. Finally they figure out how to get a lock, and engage the transporter.
The grumpy-looking chief of security rematerializes on the Ops transporter pad, adjusting his "uniform" in an entirely unnecessarily maneuver he long ago picked up in his study of humanoids. He's naked, after all, he just looks like he's wearing clothes.
"Thank you for bringing me in", he grumbles, not saying the "finally" everyone can clearly hear in his tone. "It turns out that you can't open airlocks from the outside, so I wasn't able to come in the obvious way."
O'Brien, still slightly surprised by the sudden reappearance of his "dead" coworker, falls back on technical details as always. "That's a safety system we installed. The airlocks won't open unless they detect a ship is docked."
Kira chimes in with "Yeah, the Cardassians didn't have that restriction, as they wanted the freedom to just toss Bajorans out the airlocks when they felt like it." Odo responds with his usual grunt, a dismissive "pah, you solids and your weaknesses and your squabbles" noise.
Sisko replies "Regardless, it's good to see you alive and well, Odo."
Odo half-nods. "Commander, if you'll excuse me, I have reports to file and a safety lockout to implement. As tempting a prospect as it might seem, I wouldn't want Quark to end up to be sucked out the station's new orifice when he comes looking for his shipment of Yarmok sauce."
O'Brien jumps in with his typical urgency, half-covering up the feeling of "I should have fixed that already, damn" that he's seemingly always feeling around here. "I'll send a repair team down there right away."
Odo doesn't turn as he walks to the lift. "That would be appreciated, Chief. I'd rather not have to walk along the outside of the station again today." he says, punctuating it by activating the lift and descending out of view.
Sisko rubs his forehead. This is a strange place indeed, and despite all the headaches it gives him on a daily basis, he's beginning to feel almost at home in this remote alien place.
This place is strange, the people are strange, the situation is strange... But they're his strange.
Maybe someday they'll stop surprising him. But he doubts it, and he isn't sure he would want them to.
He sits down at his desk and pulls up another of the day's reports, thankful he doesn't need to write that letter to Doctor Mora Pol, for more than one reason.
It's never easy losing someone under your command, and writing that letter to their next-of-kin never gets easier either. But it's a good day when you don't have to do either.

How to Add & Use New Fonts to Microsoft Word
A piece of advice before you share the document with someone that’s been written in the newly downloaded font, “the receiver’s MS Word must also have the same font installed on the computer, or else the whole document would like a code or in weird format that won’t make any sense. With that note, let’s check how to add & use the downloaded fonts on Microsoft Word:
Download & Install New Font on Computer
This goes without saying but whatever fonts that have been installed on your system (manual or default), MS Word uses those ones only for writing. This simply means, whatever font you are about to download for you to use in MS Word, must be installed first on the system.
1. Let’s start the process by closing or shutting down Microsoft Word (if it’s running on the computer currently).
2. The next step for you would be, looking for or visiting the website you think is best to download the fonts (for example, we took the Google Fonts website platform here).
3. Once you find the font you want for your system, don’t delay & just download it.
4. Now that it’s been downloaded on your desktop, the file format would be Archive.
5. Here you need to right click on the file & extract the same in the download folder.
6. Once it’s been extracted, double click on the font file & the Font Viewer will open up.
7. The Font Viewer will ask you to install the newly downloaded font on your system so go ahead with the installation.
8. Once the installation has been completed, the Install button will be greyed out & that’s how you know the font has successfully been installed on the PC.
Now that you have installed the font of your choice, it’s time to add the same & start using the newly downloaded font in Microsoft Word.
How to Add & Use Downloaded Font in Microsoft Word
1. Unlike the above process, let’s start with opening up Microsoft Word on the computer.
2. Here, you need to tap on the Home button & follow this by tapping on the arrow you use to change the font format.
3. You will either find the newly downloaded font in the list of fonts or simply type in the one that you downloaded recently.
4. Now select the new font & start typing on Microsoft Word to check if it’s working effectively.
What If You Want to Set The New Downloaded One as Default?
If you are so fond of the one you just downloaded, there is a chance you might want to set it as default so you won’t have to change it again & again.
1. Open up Microsoft Word & go to the Home Screen to make necessary changes.
2. Here, you need to click on the Arrow sign of the Font section (right bottom corner).
3. Once you tap on it, another window will open up with many details including font selection, style, size, & whatnot.
4. You need to select the font you just downloaded & don’t forget to make the changes in style or size (if you want to).
5. After everything has been set, click on Set As Default to go ahead with the process.
6. Once it’s been tapped, another small window will open up that will ask you to select one of the options & you need to select, “All documents based on the Normal.dotm template?”
7. After choosing the correct option, tap on OK & your changes would be saved without talking much time.
& now whenever you open up the Microsoft Word, the font, size, style, & everything would work the way you wanted as saved a few moments ago.

So I keep telling myself I’m not gonna talk about this anymore but it’s late and I’m salty and I figure this would be a good learning opportunity for everyone anyway so whatever.
I keep seeing people commenting on how the Delpad Week prompt list getting stolen and vandalized doesn’t count as art theft because I guess technically I didn’t “draw” anything while making it. And I feel like this is coming down to people just not understanding the work that goes into graphic design? (I mean I assume some of it is just people wanting to make excuses for doing something horrible but w/e I had my panic attacks I’m over it.) So since we do live in an age where people still devalue graphic design and other computer-based art forms I thought would break down all of the steps that I took when designing the prompt list, as well as the icons and banners for Delpad Week.
(And as a quick disclaimer there were probably easier ways to do some of the things I’m gonna list but I am still learning and I had never really used Clip Studio Paint before. I am an amateur, be patient with me.)
Step One - Picking Fonts!
Now this one might have come down to me just being picky, but I had a pretty clear idea in my head of what I wanted the “logo” to look like so after opening Clip and determining that NONE of the default fonts came anywhere close to what I was looking for I went to dafont.com and spent like...god I want to say close to an hour browsing the free fonts until I found a 5-10 options I liked.
I then had to extract and install all of the files onto my pc and make sure they worked, which is easy, but still took time.
Then I typed out what I wanted the logo to say using all of the different fonts to see what they looked like and what they looked like next to each other. See it’s a good idea to compliment fancy serif fonts with simple sans serif ones so I needed to pick a fancy one for the “Delpad Week” text and then a simple one for the prompts and dates and such.
Step Two - COLORS!
After I picked the two fonts I wanted to use I had to pick out the colors for the poster and the text. I took the colors for the “Delpad Week” logo itself from a pic of the Sun Chaser/Cloud Slayer I found, both the usual red and then the darker shadow. Which, once again, there HAS to be an easier way to do this but I typed the words out twice in both colors and painstakingly layered them over each other in just the right way to get the “drop shadow” effect I wanted.
Then I picked a nice light black for the rest of the text that I think I took from the line art on a screen cap I found? Either way it looked better than true black. And took time to find.
And of course I needed to find a good blue for the background which took a bit cuz it needed to match everything else.
Step Three - Sizing!
I had to look up all of the different recommended photo dimensions for tumblr and twitter icons, headers, posts, ect to make sure the damn things wouldn’t look wonky once I uploaded them.
Oh and since Clip is weird I did actually have to do that typing/layering thing on EACH NEW PICTURE I made. Which making sure they all looked the same sure was FUCKING HARD and took hours!
And my friend took the time to make the transparent Della and LP for the banners and I had to resize and center them on each pic. And I had to find and size/position the clouds and transparent Sun Chaser/Cloud Slayer too.
Step 4 - Putting It All Together!
Imo this one is the hardest since Clip doesn’t have alignment tools and even if it did sometimes due to fonts and art and such being the way they are true center doesn’t actually LOOK centered to the human eye so there’s a lot of fiddling around with the text and pics to make it look as close as possible to center which starts to kinda numb your mind after a while. Lots of taking breaks and coming back to it to make sure it looked okay.
And of course typing all of the prompts out and making sure the fonts actually do look okay and everything is spelled right and spaced correctly. I have dyslexia, I double check spelling, sue me.
So once you finally think that everything looks okay you get to go upload it to different sites to make sure the icons and such don’t look blurry or get cropped weird and then inevitably go back and move everything around again or in some cases remake them entirely(the deviantART icon took like two re-makes to get right) when they do. Shit takes time, yo.
That might not seem like a lot but let me stress that I made the prompt list poster, the tumblr icon and banner, the twitter icon and banner, the deviantART club icon, and the other banners for things like updates and such. Which all and all took the better part of TWO FUCKING DAYS.
And that’s not even mentioning the time it took to find a good tumblr theme and set it up and put together the DA club and the twitter account, as well as documenting all of the prompt suggestions and making sure I picked ones that were vague enough to allow for creativity as well as represented what everyone wanted, plus deciding on/writing out all of the rules including the ones for different sites. All of which, aside from some help here and there from friends, I did by myself. For free.
I’m not complaining. I am having a blast running Delpad Week, and making all of this was frustrating but fun. I love graphic design, I wanted to do my best, hell I even got input from my godfather who is a graphic designer on some of the banners just to make sure everything was as high a quality as it could be. And you know what? I was really, really proud of that prompt list. I have been stuck at home disabled for about a year now in awful pain most of the time and only just getting back into drawing and graphic design and I was super happy with how everything came out. I wanted people to see it, I wanted to give Delpad fans a beautiful blog and prompt list to look at after everything we have been through. And not to toot my own horn but I think I delivered.
So considering all of that you can see why having someone steal the banner, deface it with horrible and triggering content was so horribly upsetting to me. Aside from how defacing something a queer woman worked hard on with words like “burning a pride flag” is abhorrent and drove me to tears and panic attacks, how would you guys feel if someone took something you worked on for two days and shat all over it for a cheap joke? Especially when the only thing you did wrong was want to give a good, cute ship some attention.
Graphic Design is an art. Taking someone’s unique design, vandalizing it, and then reposting it IS ART THEFT. Just because it took you 10 minutes to open the pic up, color over the original text and use a crappy font to add in your own prompts doesn’t mean making the thing in the first place was that easy. (And again, I’m not complaining about the time and the work. I’m having fun. I love graphic design. If I didn’t want to do this I wouldn’t have.)
But anyway, like I said, I’m trying to not let it bother me anymore. People have apologized and that’s good. But hopefully this breakdown can help you guys appreciate the work that goes into graphic design and be a bit more courteous to the people who do that work, especially for free.

Day 9 - Unity & DoozyUI - Practicing Menus
So today, I opened Unity and most likely lost all my work more than once.
Please forgive me.
First things first, I noticed that Unity had yet another version out. Unity 2019.2.8f1. Of course, being the junkie that I am I immediately decided to upgrade the project and supersede the previous one. Something I shouldn’t be doing, but will likely continue doing until major progress is made on the project. Or so I tell myself.
Upgrading
Upgrading is just the click of the button. While I waited for this process, I moved onto to working on the projects GDD, also known as a Game Design Document. This is because you’d be surprised how much functionality you just ‘assume’ will work a certain way. It’s always better to plan these things and see the problem ahead of time.
When Unity finally did open, it opened on a very empty scene. The menu and menu scene I had created previously, was not there. (I later realised it was probably on a different branch that through my own dumbness was also destroyed.)
For reference, above is the last simple menu I implemented. I managed to learn about canvases, and buttons and played around with them being responsive. It was actually relatively simple.
Fixing the broke
I noticed some packages I had were now out of date. These were default packages that the project just happened to have. The Test Framework Package and the Rider Editor Package. I assumed the best thing to do was make sure everything I had was now up to date, whether I needed it or not. You never know.
Of course, the first thing I did once this was all done was try and build it. It was now an empty scene, but the project would not build. Strange.
And a little scary.
The debug log showed me that the Rider Editor was causing a lot of issues. I had no idea what I needed it for, so I searched it up. It was a package that allowed a better workflow between the Rider IDE. I don’t use this, and probably never will. So it’s now gone. With that out of the way I installed DOTween and DoozyUI 3.
The game finally built. Sure it was an empty blue screen, but at least all the errors were out of the way.
I updated the .gitattributes and .gitignore files to stop giving me crlf to lf errors and allow me to submit onto github, and I drew up a main menu mockup that ended up being a little too spooky.
Placement wise though, I think it’ll be okay. For the title font, in this placeholder at least, I wanted something a little quirky and ended up going for the font Pacifico. It’s a free google font, meaning its good for both commercial and personal use.
Next I changed my Master Canvas to be relative to screen size and set its anchors to the center. This means whatever screen size you’re viewing on, it should scale to the right dimensions instead of trying to stay in a fixed place and look awful. To make my life easier, I’ll be creating this project in a 4K resolution, so I only have to deal with scaling down instead of scaling up - to preserve quality. I really have a problem with wanting everything to be the best quality it could possibly be.
Then I reopened Github, and saw a lot of conflicting files. Was I on the right branch? I don’t know, it was all a terrible mistake.
Of course, after trying to fix up this mess something broke and things won’t build. I managed to restore the main menu set up from the bin, but was going to have to set up the connections again.
I reimported all my external assets (DoozyUI and Discourse) just to be on the safe side of things.
Then it broke again. By broke I mean I messed up by switching branches, mid project, while it was open and it became a real mess full of conflicts. I should know better.
The solution here is probably to not work on something so infrequently you forget about another branch and potentially lose all your work. So my new approach, is now that I’ve got this out of the way. To make every fortnightly build, its own branch moving forward. Originally, i wanted to split branches up by features, but I imagine I will wait until the very base of the game’s functionality is complete, and all that’s left to implement is the content heavy events. Such as dialogue and art. Those can be split into event specific branches.
Needless to say, if you do it wrong. Version control can be a real fickle bitch.
On the other hand, it’s probably my saving grace. I can recreate the menu much cleaner now, and have some better ideas on how I would do things. I also really could have rolled back to a previous version.
Reviewing the build
I checked out the build, the framerate was perfectly fine, but it felt a little slow. I probably needed the transitions to come in a lot faster. 1-2 seconds can feel awfully slow when you’re used to an immediate response.
The last unity build was only 83 MB. This might be a lot to some, considering all I put in was a fancy menu, but I appreciate how Unity strips out everything it feels isn’t being used. Somehow my previous build was actually bigger at 90 MB. I’ll have to see how it runs on other machines, and make use of loading screens. I’ll also have to get familiar with the Unity Profiler, but this may be a Unity Pro only option - something I’ll have to look into.
The unity documentation does have a few guides to optimising for mobile, which while not a goal currently -it’s not something I want to rule out just yet.
What’s Next?
Next on my To Do List for build 0.1.2 is:
Complete more UI visual concept.
Including an about/social media toggle button on the main menu.
Re-do the main menus in grayscale, so it doesn’t impact the design choices. Right now I’m focusing on placement, not colours.
Main Menu
Settings
Gallery
Remove menu/slide backgrounds and keep all main menu transitions on a low opacity alpha.
Remove button text from heart, possibly change it to an exit menu.
Implement a windowed mode, and include choices for this in the settings menu.
Allow options to change screen resolution
A help tutorial when you press play, and a help button to access it at anytime from then on.
Set up Graphics Quality toggles
Add in a splash screen scene (other than the Unity opening screen).
Add a Do you want to Quit? Popup, and code it in so it’s functional.
Toggle this so the popup comes up when you press escape, rather than ESC leading straight to quitting the application.
Do some research on existing GUIs from things like visual novels. Iv’e received recommendations such as:
Will: A Wonderful World
My Only Sunshine
The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car.
Which should be due on the 19/20 of this month. See you then!

In font rendering this usually refers to grayscale rendering, when black/white pixels around the edges of a letter have their intensity toggled to give the glyph a softer edge. Some TerminologyĪnti-Aliasing: generally, anti-aliasing is any technology which smooths out the edges of a digital image. The process by which these systems turn vector images into rasters varies wildly from system to system, and you need to be aware of the intricacies of the problem in order to anticipate and deal with it. What’s going on? Put simply, different operating systems display typefaces differently. Google uses Arial, and not a web font, for searches. What a Google search looks like on different operating systems. You’ve just learnt a hard lesson in font rendering, an important factor in web design that-if not accounted for-can turn your deployment into a nightmare.

Deployment comes around and your colleague opens it up on a Mac and-ĭisaster: something has gone subtly-yet-horrifyingly wrong with the kerning letters are totally the wrong density, and it seems to change from letter to letter strange knife like edges protrude where before, there were beautiful curves. You’ve tested it on desktop, you’ve tested it on Android, you’ve tested it on every size and permutation of screen in-between. We’ve all been there: you’ve spent days putting together templates, and your site looks perfect. It has stayed relatively static for decades, but big things are happening-learn about how web fonts are turning the game upside-down. Let me know if you have any questions about this or just how it goes.Font rendering is the process by which operating systems take text and turn it into display text. These were also made with an Xbox 360 controller. One of our QA members also did quickly some example pictures for how the bindings are supposed to look. Could you check you haven't accidentally assigned wrong actions to it? Just rebinding the key for it could also be helpful, even if the bind for it looks okay. The cursor moving when you press a button sounds strange.
Ccmenu macbook plus#
The different directions for the stick are usually show as plus and minus signs in the menu next to the assigned key. Cheers!ĭo you mean that the controller's stick is assigned for both going up and down? This is probably normal as it would be strange to use another button if you want to use the thumbstick. Let me know if you need more help or just how it goes. Please note that there are many actions to bind in the game, especially remember to check that swinging for the Thief (while on rope) is binded. If you need help with the binding, we do have this picture here that presents the default button layout for a generic contoller that could be heplful.
Ccmenu macbook drivers#
If you don't have drivers for the controller you could try these ones from example, which we have heard to be working well. What do you mean that the keys aren't mapped correctly? Do they seem to register at all? Are you sure your controller is installed properly to your device? Have you installed drivers for it? Unfortunately we don't have a file for this, so I can only recommend you to rebind the controls manually. Are there any configuration files that I can use instead of mapping those manually? When I try to configure them in-game it doesn't seem to be able to map the keys properly. Rant!
It’s about work so it’s under the cut because no one cares I just need to get this off my fucking chest.
So at work I’ve been doing spreadsheets - we get lists of places with new boilers installed and we have to put the data that we are sent into a uniform format (address 1, address 2, address 3, postcode and install date) and save it. This is so we can send people with new boilers... letters about getting insurance.
I’ve been doing this for like.... 4 months?
and today the girl I work with who showed me how to do it, went off on a fucking rant because I’ve been doing it “ALL WRONG”.
Now... here is the thing. she’s gone through EVERY FILE I’ve ever cleansed, and wrote down on the file what I’ve done wrong and what needs changed. No big deal. She’s spent the better part of 2 weeks doing this and I was like... JFC I’ve really messed up here.
However, today I opened the files to take a look. the MAIN OMG THINGS I HAVE DONE WRONG ARE:
The font is in Arial.
I have not removed ‘Lodges’ from addresses as these are sometimes not houses.
There were some duplicated lines (as in, 1 Park Road might be there twice)
Businesses were not completely removed.
So I went through ALL of these and fixed the HUGE MISTAKES I had made.
file 1: removed 10 lines of duplicates and 2 lodges. Changed the font to size 11 not 10. (this file was 14k lines of data)
file 2: Took out 3 Lodges. (file was 42k lines)
file 3: Changed font.
file 4: 64 lines of duplicated info ( file was 109k)
and so on.
She’s checked 150 ish files I’ve done and I’ve made, in TOTAL about 200 lines of data changes. I’ve cleansed over a million units, and I missed 200 lines.
Today she actually yelled at me because I use the right side of the excel sheet to use my helper codes (like, =len(a1) and that) and she puts them in the left. Seriously, she actually yelled at me because I use THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PAGE TO HER. IN LINES THAT GET DELETED AFTER USING.
She says that doing it on the right side means that the formulas are wrong. how the FUCK this is the case is beyond me, because A1 is always gonna be A1 NO MATTER WHERE I FUCKING TYPE IT.
“The reason that you are missing so many things is that you are using filters and not sorting it using the ‘sort a to z’...”
Darling... the FILTERS ARE THERE FOR THIS REASON.
I’m so mad. I’m not stupid. She’s so loud and she’s so fucking dramatic that now the whole office is like.... wow, Robyn is shit at her job, and I’ve genuinely made a tiny number of mistakes that aren’t even big things (like, the font is going to be changed at the time for collating for posting anyway?)
I don’t like being told I’ve made mistakes, but I sure as fuck don’t like to be told I’m doing it wrong when I’m just doing it different.

My Ultimate PowerShell prompt with Oh My Posh and the Windows Terminal
I've long blogged about my love of setting up a nice terminal, getting the prompt just right, setting my colors, fonts, glyphs, and more. Here's some of my posts.
How to make a pretty prompt in Windows Terminal with Powerline, Nerd Fonts, Cascadia Code, WSL, and oh-my-posh
Patching the new Cascadia Code to include Powerline Glyphs and other Nerd Fonts for the Windows Terminal
What's the difference between a console, a terminal, and a shell?
Taking your PowerShell prompt to the next level with Windows Terminal and Oh my Posh 3
I want to take a moment to update my pretty prompt post with a little more detail and a more complex PowerShell $PROFILE, due to some changes in Oh My Posh, PowerShell, and the Windows Terminal. I doubt that this post is perfect and I'm sure there's stuff here that is a little extra. But I like it, and this post will serve as my "setting up a new machine" post until I get around to writing a script to do all this for me in one line.
I love my prompt.
Let's get you set up!
Get PowerShell
I don't mean Windows PowerShell (that's "classic" now) I mean the .NET Core-powered cross-platform PowerShell. There's a LOT of ways to get it but I'm a Store person usually so I can get PowerShell (and it'll auto update) from the Microsoft Store or just "winget install Microsoft.PowerShell" from the command line with winget.
Get Windows Terminal and set a default Shell
Get Windows Terminal if you don't already have it, you can get Windows Terminal free from the Store. If you don't have access to the Microsoft Store, the builds are published on the GitHub releases page. It comes with a lovely font called Cascadia Code...but...
Now that you have Windows Terminal, you'll notice that it knows that you have PowerShell installed and will add it to your Windows Terminal dropdown menu! You can set PowerShell as your default Profile - that's the one you'll get by default when you make a new Tab - in settings:
Upgrade your Terminal/Console Fonts
I like fonts with lots of Glyphs so I also download and Install Caskaydia Cove Nerd Font Complete. This is the same Cascadia Code font but MODIFIED to include hundreds of special characters that you can use to make your prompt cooler.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The string literal name of this font for use in settings or VS Code is "CaskaydiaCove NF". If you're using Cascadia Code, there are different strings for each. The NUMBER ONE question I get is 'why don't my glyphs/fonts show up right in Windows Terminal/VS Code?' and the answer is almost always "you're using the wrong font string." It's usually either an extra space or a missing space, so don't be afraid to double check.
Remember that Windows Terminal has a lovely Settings UI but you can always click "open JSON file" to manage the settings.json as text if you prefer. Here's mine. Yours will be different and you should customize it! The Windows Terminal documentation is fantastic. Again, see how PowerShell is in BOLD? That's because it's my default.
Now, let's add a little...spice...
Add "Oh My Posh" to your Shell
Oh My Posh has amazing docs so check them out. Do note that some stuff has changed, especially from v2 to v3.
EXCITING NOTE: Oh My Posh is portable and works on any shell, so I use it on both my "Pwsh" (PowerShell) in Windows and my Bash shells on WSL running Ubuntu.
You can install Oh My Posh with with PowerShell's "Install-Module" or with the platform-specific install instructions. I used the latter, which is somewhat new, but it's tomato/tomato, so use what works for you.
Again, read the docs but the idea on Windows is basically this (or get it from GitHub):
winget install JanDeDobbeleer.OhMyPosh # restart shell to reload PATH
Then edit $PROFILE and add the following line, remembering at this point that oh-my-posh is an executable on the PATH.
oh-my-posh --init --shell pwsh --config ~/jandedobbeleer.omp.json | Invoke-Expression
I have changed my Oh My Posh from Jan's default to include my own stuff, and I keep my latest up in a GitHub Gist and also in my DropBox/OneDrive so it's always syncing to all my machines. Mine is this, after I download from my gist.
oh-my-posh --init --shell pwsh --config D:/Dropbox/ohmyposhv3-2.json | Invoke-Expression
Yours will vary. Again, read the docs and experiment! Once added, reload your profile for the changes to take effect, or restart your shell.
. $PROFILE
That .json file is filled with "segments" that are documented on the Oh My Posh site in a lot of detail. Overwhelming detail. You can add your computer's battery, your Azure Subscription, the dotnet or node version of your current folder, really anything. Even your Spotify songs. I'm going to make one that show my Blood Sugar.
Go explore Oh My Posh Themes and then modify them with your own additional Segments.
Again, note that your fonts will need the right glyphs or it will look weird.
Here's a GOOD prompt:
Here's a BAD prompt with an issue!
Why is it wrong? Either the .json file that is your config has been saved wrong or corrupted the Unicode Glyphs, or you've got a font that doesn't have those glyphs.
Re-assert your Git segment in Oh My Posh
Some folks want full git info, status, added, modified, untracked, etc and others just want the current git branch. Check the Git segment and the Posh Git segment to make sure you are getting the performance AND information you need.
I needed to turn on "display_stash_count" and "display_upstream_icon" in my config json, like this:
{ "type": "git", "style": "powerline", "powerline_symbol": "", "invert_powerline": false, "foreground": "#193549", "background": "#fffb38", "leading_diamond": "", "trailing_diamond": "", "properties": { "display_status": true, "display_stash_count": true, "display_upstream_icon": true } },
Again, this is all optional and affect performance slightly, but be aware of these properties. I believe I have these set the right way I want them in my public gist. Here is me moving around my source code with "z" in stead of cd, but note the prompt changes.
Turn your PowerShell directories up to 11 with Terminal-Icons
Is your prompt not extra enough? That's because your directory listing needs color AND cool icons!
Install-Module -Name Terminal-Icons -Repository PSGallery
And then add one line to my $profile (edit with "code $profile"):
Import-Module -Name Terminal-Icons
Sweet!
How far is too far?
At this point you're basically done, but I also LOVE PSReadLine. It's great generally but also nice for bash and Emacs types who are moving to PowerShell or use PowerShell for work.
I've added features like "ctrl shift b" at the command line will run "dotnet build." Why? Because I can and because it's muscle memory so I'm making my prompt work for me.
You can also add Predictive Autocomplete to your prompt if you like but I'll leave that as an exercise to the reader! My PowerShell profile is on a public gist, and while it's not perfect and likely has issues, it works for me!
Enjoy! Thanks to the Windows Terminal Team and the always lovely Jan De Dobbeleer from Oh My Posh, as well as Brandon Olin from Terminal Icons.

The length of the current text and the price for downloading the corresponding audio file using the current voice is always displayed in the line below the text box. After clicking on DOWNLOAD a pop-up message is also displayed asking to confirm the amount to be paid, in credits.
To refill your account you need to purchase a package according to table here below, and the corresponding number of credits in the package is added to your account. Whenever you generate and download a sound file, the amount of credits on your account is diminished according to the corresponding number of credits required to convert the current text into speech. You can refill the amount of credits on your account at any time by purchasing a new package. The amount of credits currently available on your account is always displayed below the box, together with the number of characters currently typed in the box and the number of credits required to download the text as audio file.
Let’s make an example:
Let’s say that you start by purchasing a b-5 package. After the purchase you will have 715 credits on your account. Let's assume that you do not use TAGS, Pronunciation Editor or Premium voices, so that the number of credits required to convert a text is exactly the same as the number of characters in the text.
At this point you type a text that is 110 characters long, listen to it and then download it as a sound file. The cost for downloading this file is 110 credits, so after the download 110 credits will be subtracted from your account. You will then have 605 credits left on your account.
Then you type a new text that is 435 characters long and download it as a sound file. 435 credits will be subtracted from your account and you will have 170 credits left.
If you now purchase a b-30 package, 4750 credits will be added to your account, meaning that you will now have 4920 credit on your account.
Now let’s assume that you type a new text of 650 characters but using a premium voice. The cost in credit for downloading this text as audio file is then 1300 credits. After downloading this text as audio with a premium voice, you will have 3620 credits left of your account.
