Two Boys And The Tree Story There was a boy named Ethan who loved adventure. One day he was playing in the park and he climbed a tree 30 feet high. Ethan began to swing from one of its branches, having such pleasure that he did not realize that he might fall. His cousin Liam, who was only a year older, started climbing the same tree. Ethan’s father and Liam’s mother saw that the children had…

The World Ender by Lord Huron would be perfect for this moon
Anon you're so right and also I'm losing my mind over this song rn.
Tumblr media
I had been imagining "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash for this moment but this song has all the vibes I loved from that one plus lyrics that are literally perfect for Wildfirecry, this is such a good pick!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, SO: 7 farm cats attacked Fiercestripe's patrol. 4 of them were killed (Coal, his two sons, and one of Bee's sons), and 3 of them survived, but were wounded (Spider, Bee's other son, and Butterfly's son). These 3are the cats that Wildfirecry tracked down and killed in Moon 29 Part 3. He didn't kill anyone but those 3 toms!
Tumblr media
No artistic liberty here! Wildfirecry committed at least three real life war crimes!
Tumblr media
Absolutely! There's not a whole lot more to them than what is shown. I haven't put a ton of thought into Forestclan because they're already gone, but I imagine that they were a lot more religiously focused than Loudclan is. Their Starclan literally lived in the stars, and thus they were almost everpresent during the winter, and absent in the summer, when they were believed to hide underground. For this reason, if a cat died in the summer their body must be buried in order to join Starclan, and if a cat's body could not be buried, then they would be lost to wander until the sky darkened again. On the other hand, if a cat died in the winter, they would be left out to decompose in the open air, so that their spirit could ascend up to join Starclan in the sky, and burying them would leave them lost until Starclan returned underground. The rites that Wildfirecry performed doesn't allow for either of these fates. It traps a cat's soul somewhere in the middle, suspended in the air too low to escape into the sky and to high to shelter underground. I don't know if I've talked about it before, but I don't think the valley territories have a dark forest or equivalent "cat hell", so this is truly the worst punishment that Wildfirecry can bestow upon them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's Fiercestripe we're talking about here, she didn't waste time with some lovey-dovey good bye. She wants vengeance just as much as Wildfirecry does, if not more, and she only has a moment to speak to him. They'll have time for softness later, for now Wildfirecry has a job to do and she's here to help him do it.
Tumblr media
I imagine that Rosehiptree would have been the one person Wildfirecry told that he was leaving. Quietly, before he excused himself, he told her that if he hadn't returned within a moon that she needed to go to the Black Water Pool and get her lives. While Wildfirecry didn't intend to lose all of his lives, he didn't want to promise to come back when he couldn't assure it, and honestly dying and passing his lives on to his only remaining daughter to make sure she outlives her illness is not necessarily a total loss in his book. Rosehiptree did that math, and considering everything she knew about her dad, decided that he was definitely not coming home. She relied a lot on Songpaw after their conversation, and even now that Wildfirecry's back and she's doing a little bit better, she still treats him as her anchor. She knows that Wildfirecry HAD to go do what he did to be able to live with himself, she's even thankful that he did it so that she doesn't have to fear Spider coming back, but he still left her when she needed him, and Songpaw didn't.
Tumblr media
Thank you! That's a great compliment! I think it's pretty likely that you've spotted at least one of the ships being foreshadowed in Moon 30, but the real question is did you catch them all???

But seriously, what did the people of medieval times listen to?
Let's answer this post :
Tumblr media
The short answer is : the things they listened to were FAR MUCH WORSE than anything in our Spotify playlists.
The long answer is :
In the 12th century, southern France knew an exceptional cultural and linguistic wealth. It is in medieval Occitanie that the fin'amor took roots and these stories of courtly love inspired a whole literature of archetypal romances between a queen and a knight, of an inferior rank, who surpasses himself to reach the object of his desires while knowing his romantic goal to be vain and inaccessible. These stories advocating qualities of respect, honour and chastity were very popular at the court of the county of Toulouse.
These love stories were sometimes in the form of poems and always sung by musicians who mastered the local language, the langue d'oc: the troubadours. Very influential in the local nobility, the troubadours were allowed to take certain liberties that in other courts, further north in the country, would be offensive: for example, they could sing a melody proclaiming their love for the queen.
The Occitan ballad "A l'entrada del temps clar" (meaning "at the beginning of the warm season") was written and sung during the 12th century, supposedly in honour of the late Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. It tells the story of a "queen of April" or "queen of spring" who leaves the king, deemed too old, and prefers him a handsome young man. The song tells that the queen organizes festivities and invites the whole kingdom to dance and eventually a night of general debauchery.
Now, to the actual lyrics:
A l'entrada del temps clar, eya Per jòia recomençar, eya E per jelós irritar, eya Vòl la regina mostrar Qu'el' es si amorosa
In English:
At the beginning of warm weather, indeed To bring back joy, indeed And to anger the jealous, indeed The queen wants to show That she's in love
Who are "the jealous" here? If we stick to the theory saying that the song is about Eleanor, it’s probably the king of France and his court, particularly pious and austere (so not a very conducive place for celebrations and festivities). They struggled to understand and accept the queen’s strong character and the southern Occitan education she had received.
Moving on.
In English:
Furthermore, the king is coming, indeed To put an end to the dance, indeed Because he is afraid, indeed That another man would steal from him The Queen of April […] But his efforts were in vain, indeed As she doesn’t care about an old man, indeed But rather for an ardent young man, indeed Who knows how to satisfy The savoury lady
Here, the king is openly mocked and ridiculed: he disturbs the festivities and refuses to join it, he is reduced to his old age and his inability to satisfy his wife and nobody cares for him, preferring his more handsome and entertaining rival.
Qui donc la vezés dançar, eya E son gent còrs deportar, eya Ben pògra dir de vertat, eya Qu'el mont non aja sa par La regina joiosa
In English:
Anyone who sees her dance, indeed And show off her beautiful body, indeed Can say without lying, indeed That there is no equal in this world To the merry queen
Here, praise is made on the beauty of the queen but especially the beauty of her body, in a rather licentious way. As said earlier, it is a privilege that only troubadours of Occitanie can indulge without fearing repercussions.
Nonetheless, the King is not the only person that can be subject to critics and mock in medieval times. No one is untouchable, including the church.
"Ai vist lo lop" (I saw the wolf) is a popular song from the 13th century, also of Occitan origin. Here, animals are used to represent real-life people: the wolf is the king, the fox is the churchman and the hare is the tax collector. These three representatives of power are accused of being responsible for the misery of the people.
Ai vist lo lop, lo rainard, la lèbre Ai vist lo lop, lo rainard dancar Totei tres fasiàn lo torn de l’aubre [...] Fasiàn lo torn dau boisson folhat
In English:
I saw the wolf, the fox, the hare I saw the wolf, the fox dancing All three went around the tree I saw the wolf, the fox, the hare All three went around the tree They went around the leafy bush
Seen like this, the lyrics sound rather cryptic. But the next lyrics are extremely explicit:
Aqui triman tota l'annada Pèr se ganhar quauquei soùs Rèn que dins una mesada Ai vist lo lop, lo rainard, la lèbre Nos i fotèm tot pel cuol Ai vist lo lèbre, lo rainard, lo lop
In English:
Here we slave away all year To earn a few pennies And in a month I saw the wolf, the fox, the hare We have it in the ass (meaning that we have nothing left) I saw the hare, the fox, the wolf
And then everything becomes clear. People work hard and the few coins they receive go directly into taxes, first those of the king, then of the church, and other unjust taxes that existed at the time. The wolf, fox and hare will then waste this money on useless parties ("All three went around the tree") and orgies between themselves ("They went around the leafy bush").
So yeah... They definitely can handle your Spotify playlist lol.

Save the World with Rock and Roll and Love 6
Part 5
Hawkins was great. It was the best place in the world. Filled with nice people who understood them, just the sweetest. Why would they ever want to leave? It was all sunshine and rainbows in this town. And that was what they sung about. Sunshine, rainbows, and how much they loved the town they grew up in. How they never wanted to leave.
“I didn’t think it was possible, but your sound’s gotten worse!”, the stage manager shouted over the booing.
The boys of Corroded Coffin were in their own little world, playing their ditty. Not even the jeers of a dive bar audience could bring them down from this high. They were up in the clouds. But then the audience started to throw things. Eddie got beaned with a beer bottle. Gareth and Crash both got splashed by the same spray of someone else’s beer.
Jeff got a face full of half-eaten sandwich. They started coming to just as they were being dragged off stage and pushed them off.
“What the hell!?”
“Where are we?!”
“Where’s Steve?!!”
Disoriented to hell and back, they stumbled their way back to their shared apartment to try and recuperate and regroup. Jeff started cooking while they retraced their steps and realized what had happened to them.
“Son of a bitch drugged us again!”, Eddie shouted, holding his head in his hands.
Crash was rocking on the couch while Gareth paced back and forth.
“Well what do we do? What are we gonna do? This is serious, he kidnapped Steve, you saw it”, Gareth said.
Eddie’s leg bounced and he looked down at the floor. “Why do we have to do anything?”
“Dude, what?”, Crash squeaked.
“You heard what I said”, Eddie blew a breath out. “Maybe this is the best for Steve. He’ll get to share his voice with the world.” He stood and went over to the window, staring out. “It’s what he’s always wanted.”
“You’re a goddamn idiot, Munson!”, Crash shouted, coming to his feet.
“Why’re we yelling at Eddie?”, Jeff asked, coming from the kitchen.
“He thinks we should give up on Steve”, Gareth said.
“What the hell!?”
“Steve doesn’t need this band, he never did!”, Eddie shouted back, turning to face his friends. “Creel might be a first class creep, but he’s Steve’s ticket to the big time. And that’s what he deserves.”
“I can’t believe you!”, Crash pushed Eddie hard, making him fall backwards against the stereo, hitting play by accident. Steve's voice came through the speakers and Eddie felt the fog lift. At first, all he could process was his boyfriend's singing, the smooth way it sounded. But then he started to understand the vocals…
Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me?
Watching offside as I wait just in case you need me
So I still will set the stage, send my thoughts to you
That was his love. His Stevie and he was singing about…it almost sounded like he was singing about him.
“Is he..singing about me?”, Eddie’s voice was soft and unsure.
“Always has been”, Jeff said.
Crash sighed. “You’re the only one who didn’t realize it.”
“Dumbass”, Gareth added.
On top of the stereo was a notebook, one that Steve wrote in but rarely let anyone look at. It had been left here, in the wake of everything. Eddie took the liberty of looking through it. It was filled with lyrics dripping with love and adoration. Some even accompanied by little doodles of the two of them.
Eddie felt like the biggest asshole in the world right now. All along, all this time... Steve's song, all of his songs were... He wiped the tears from his eyes and closed the notebook.
"We gotta go save him."
They left the apartment, determined, but Gareth was the one to pipe up and stop them in their tracks.
"So what's the plan?"
"Plan?", Eddie echoed. "We get to the venue and free Steve, that's the plan."
"He's literally being held captive by an evil warlock that's bested us twice", Gareth held up two fingers to prove his point.
“Okay, well, any bright ideas?”, Eddie urged, hands thrown in the air.
A cop car blipped past, coming to a stop down the street at the corner. All four of them watched as the officer got out to enter a convenience store.
“I got one”, Crash said.

Guess the songs by Lyric snippets :3 Each color is a diff song 1. '' Winding down her emotions, family and friends; becoming ghosts to dream of, and pass on time will erase, every face, every name... We are alone, no one to blame. Bernadette... You are my liberty. ''
2. '' In all my years of living, it isn't very often that I get pissed off. I tried to chill with the waves... but damn you crossed the line. I've been so gracious, and yet you hurt the son of mine? ''
3. '' 'This is destiny' he says, 'Don't try and fight it.' Well, tell the fates I'm sorry 'cause, I have to rewrite it--Battle rages on, I've got no time to mend this. Fear is just the limit to push pass to end this. So shove it away, force it down and stop up the bottle.''
4. '' Everyday, we play this game of Chance, whirling through a desperate dance. Sketching visions in our head... Then you rip them all to shreds. Not once did you share pain you shouldered but bared. Did you notice me watch over you? '' 5.((Going for an English Version)) '' You can turn from the light, a beacon within the night, you're the brightest, my star. Perfect in every way, the whole world's ocean waves, reflected in your sad gaze. My savior, oh what a beautiful soul.. ''
6. ''Wait! Don't you throw your stones, no, don't you judge her. I look into her eyes... and think I love her... Innocent and pure, how could you be sure now? 'No, you've got to let her go', then why can't someone show me How?'' 7. '' They say my hunger's a problem. They tell me to curb my appetite. They say I can't keep myself from trying a bite of every plate in sight. They worship patience, a virture, hm. They tell me gluttony's a sin. But my desire's bottomless.. ''
Ooooo fun!

Tags: Mission Gone Wrong, Safe House, There's only one bed, Rivals to Lovers, Awkward Confessions, Touch Starved, First Kiss, Laughter and Humor, Sass and Snark, Mutual pining, Idiots in love
You can either do the same summary for both or two different story summaries. :D (And yes, the title is a song lyric from a song I LOVE.)
the fake fic ask game
Okay, this definitely screams for two stories :D.
a) old X-Men movie verse, set within my main X-Men verse
Title
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild
Summary:
It's 20 years after the Battle of Liberty Island, and after the latest couple of almost apocalyptic crises and the odd near-death experience, deaths, and resurrections, Scott finally makes good on his promise regarding a holiday in the Maldives to his wife. Because it's Scott and holidays though, also known as opposite polarities, that planned beach hangout doesn't turn out as it was meant to, of course. The general global mood regarding mutants is once more not exactly shiny after Mystique just had the whole city of New York enslaved, emptied, and turned into a mutant paradise for a while. So when there's an unexpected tropical storm threatening the island group where Scott and Katja are residing and Katja reluctantly reveals herself to the rest of that beach resort in order to clear the sky with her powers and prevent damage and casualties in that little paradise, our heroes are faced with hostility instead of gratitude. Before the situation can get too ugly, our lovebirds are extracted with the Blackbird piloted by Remy and Marie, just having come back from a mission, who have been alerted by Jean telepathically that they need to make a little detour. Sensing how devastated their friends are by the spoiled holiday and the ongoing discrimination issues, Marie and Remy decide against flying back to Westchester but take the jet to Marie's former home state instead as she knows they'll not run into a lot of people there in the countryside. In a run-down country club with lots of karaoke fun, the two couples enjoy a surprisingly nice evening, coming to terms with the realization there are a lot of places even for mutants to enjoy the merits of normalcy and that it doesn't have to take luxury escapes and cocktails under palm trees for a little bit of true happiness.

b) current cartoon verse, taking place after episode 3.5

Mission Gone Wrong, Safe House, There's only one bed, Rivals to Lovers, Awkward Confessions, Touch Starved, First Kiss, Laughter and Humor, Sass and Snark, Mutual pining, Idiots in love
Summary:
After that whole drama with Maddie and Nathan, Scott and Jean have decided to divorce as they can no longer tell what is and was real in their relationship and can't stand even sleeping in the same bed anymore. After having earned a painful rejection by Jean himself, Logan has finally given up on that dream that was never meant to be and reluctantly comes to Scott's support in keeping the things in the mansion together while Scott is still shaken from having to give up on his newborn son and now his relationship. Challenging his old rival in regular Danger Room sessions to distract Scott and help him keep his mind and body sharp, Logan realizes that with those burdensome feelings and rivalry regarding Jean out of the way, Scott and he have a lot more in common than they'd used to think. Bit by bit, Logan even gets Scott to let go of his latest control issues a little and engage in team activities like cooking and sports for fun which almost ends with Scott burning down the kitchen, trying to make Canadian pancakes for them for breakfast though, and more than one awkward boner in public on Logan's side because Scott looks and moves just as ridiculous as hot in baseball shorts. Obviously, none of them makes a move though because they're firmly convinced, the other one still hates them. When the team receives a distress call by Forge regarding Ororo, Logan and Scott leave for Forge's home only to find it half in ruins and their ally gone, with Ororo nowhere to be seen. After combing the area in vain for hours, they're being attacked by the same mysterious enemy who has already taken their friends and need to return to the house for Logan to patch Scott up and for both of them to take an hour of rest. Which means having to share the only intact bed left while at home in the mansion, Jean telepathically tries to find a new lead for them to follow. Waiting for those news, Scott and Logan, to absolutely no one's surprise but their own, end up fucking their frustration and anxiety away.

Some extended translations notes for episode 1
(Or moreso why certain things are translated as it is, because, uh, I put a lot of thought into these subs...)
Tumblr media
"Crash through every obstacle."
Now this is the most important one. It IS the series' tagline and Hitto's catchphrase and you WILL be hearing it a lot. HKsubs and most summaries used "overcome the difficulties". D-rights used "Crash your adversity" (this is still the ONLY official English translation we got for Crash lmao) which, imo, both are fine as it is but if we look at the original sentence in Japanese further-
逆境を撃ち破れ uses the 撃 kanji instead of the more common 打ち破れ.
There's DEFINITELY a "crash" pun that needed to be made here, and D-rights' translation definitely went with that intention in mind. But I also don't want it to sound overly quirky like you see with hissatsu lines and all and prefer it as a proper motivational quote, so, yeah.
Uh, now that you know the breakdown/context/etc, with that in mind, I went with "Crash through any obstacles". It sounds both cool AND motivating, and the obstacles could apply to both the actual objects or struggles Hitto would face. There are def other ways I could go like "Crash through any hardship", "Break through every difficulties" etc, but I mainly wanted to avoid something too cheesy or too dry but still applicable in most situations? Yeah.
But eh, this could be just me though. You're always to suggest me something better that fits my description for it. Plus the quote can still be flexible if I eventually decide to do that. (Mainly keeping the "Crash Through Every"!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whatever the fuck Koutarou was reading
This...was frankly the hardest part to translate in the entire ep orz. Unfortunately, I lack knowledge of Japanese proses and stuff so googling his entire reading yielded nothing--however, some lines did appear to reference so actual literature and idioms.
"The mountains may have burned, but the birds...scorch themselves for their beloved children..." - This line supposedly references the lyrics to a folk song? It is a slightly different lyric though as it originally says 山は焼けても山鳥ゃ立たぬ 子ほど可愛いいものはない ("The mountains may have burned, but the birds didn't stand up, there's nothing cuter than a child"?). I can't be sure if this is an obscure song or not as googling a similar title is not giving me songs with the same lyrics. But eh. At least you know what Koutarou is referencing.
"Thou one shall not be lost like the fading mountain…like a parent who continues to feed into their child's greed." - OKAY THIS ONE IS FUNNY. Apparently the latter half was a reference to a proverb that originally says 子故に迷う親心 (A parent's mind is lost because of their child) which -- refers to parents that worry or spoil their child too much? OBVIOUSLY Koutarou is throwing shade at Hitto here as he didn't want to be "that" kind of parent towards his son so I did take some liberties with "feed into their child's greed" to emphasize that, rather than literally translating the phrase word by word haha.
Tumblr media
"...destroy everything here marble-lously."
OKAY BEFORE ANYONE STARTS RAISING PITCHFORKS AT ME, YOU NEED TO DO THAT TO KODOH FIRST BECAUSE HE WAS ACTUALLY SAYING A PUN IN THIS SCENE.
I think these excerpts from B-Daman wikia explains the original double meaning well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's just sadly no elegant way to translate his lines into English without making it sound meme-y. I COULD translate the line literally like the image above but will that give you the same damage of hearing a stupid pun spit out from his mouth? Idk. My reasons for not literally translating this are not that convincing but I do hope you feel anguish knowing that Kodoh's debut line was a stupid damn pun. God. WHY IS HE MY OSHI.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Rattlebrain"
One of Konta's catchphrase, "ガチャガチャ" / "gacha gacha". I think the MEANING Konta explained (as shown in the third screenshot) is important here, as originally he said 何が出てくるがわからない ("You don't know what's gonna come out") as it's obviously referencing to the randomness of actual gachas. I think going with translations like "fickle-minded" or "reckless" should work fine, but I will emphasize the fact that a) most people are often confused when he started saying it, implying that its not a common word or made up by Konta b) I do want to reference the "gacha gacha" as in the "shakey and clattering" onomatopoeia and the RNGs of real gachas. So yeah. Rattlebrain it is. I think it still delivers the same energy and intention that I mentioned. Plus my friend (Double) said "it's like Hitto's brain is a tin with marbles rolling around in it." WHICH, IS AN APT COMPARISON, ACTUALLY. And hence why I went with rattlebrain. Yeah. ~~~
An afterword: Crash's first ep is not the most complex to translate, but it does introduce some mainstay lines that you will hear a lot throughout the series (and may possibly be constantly mentioned in the fandom) and I think giving memorable, in-character translations is especially important when it comes to catchphrases and such.
It's those phrases where its double meaning and wordplay could be easily glossed over in most contexts (and I don't blame anyone if they do haha) but I personally do want to deliver the accurate intention and personality with these lines, hence the breakdowns. This is where having any familiarity with the source material is important, especially when you're translating an older show instead of an ongoing one. I mean, do you REALLY think me, the Crashhead here would gloss over such details? No.
And...yeah! I hope that was a helpful read? I'll emphasize that my translations are not perfect, but at the very least I want to put all my heart into them since, Crash is a series I hold close to my heart...over anything else, haha.

School House Rock: America Rock 4th of July Special! (Comission for WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Happy LOUD EXPLOSIONS OUTSIDE MY GODDAMN WINDOW WHILE I'M TRYING TO WRITE THIS day everyone. I almost missed doing an indepdence day specail as in the chaos of my move, reorganizing the schedule, having to play catchup, I plum forgot. Thankfully Kev came in the clutch with something easy I could do and thus this special. Schoolhouse Rock is something I saw once or twice as a kid but was a few generations before mine. It came out of a very wholesome source: add exec David McCall noticed his son, while able to learn song lyrics easy, wasn't great with remembering his multiplication tables. So he awesomely wrote a song, hired a musicain to perform it and if he wasn't already father of the year had someone animated. This caught the attention of Radford Stone, a real person I assure you and an exec at ABC who urged him to pitch it and since micheal eisner liked it enough not to kali ma his heart out, the series got greelit as some educational shorts between programs, a way to edcuate kids in a fun way and one of the earliest edutainment breakthroughs i'm aware of. And that's.. really what these are. Simple little animated shorts with awesome music to edcuate you, with this batch having been on vhs and dvd as a collection. Simple premise, great execution, so let's rock under the cut shall we?
Tumblr media
No More Kings: This one is about the colonization of america. Which naturally glosses HEAVILY over the meeting with and eventual subjication of the indigenous persons of this country . So here's wendsday adams to give us the real scoop
Tumblr media
Otherwise it's a well done short and I just love their pissy little king george who uses a telescope to spy on america and shake his fist. He's the second greatest king george in history. You likely know the first...
youtube
The real question is why HAVEN'T I covered hamilton?
Tumblr media
Fireworks Do you ever feel like a plastic bag? because I do. All day every day. Anyways, obvious jokes inside this one is also fire, not only for the stunning visuals of the fireworks, especially ont he budget of a paper clip and a piece of string, but just for the groovy beat for this one. It might be my faviorite of this batch. Aside from the creepy guy chasing a woman around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Shot Heard Round the World: .. after I typed that header ANOTHER firework went off in my neighborhood. and then about 4 or 5 as I typed this.. and another.. and another... okay it stopped ... wait no.. okay NOW it stopped. What was I on about? Oh yeah.. this one. It's not bad, but it's not really anything specail. I do however like the house art style for the characters, having most characters in black and white unless they needed to portray another race. THe only thing of not eit really does is feature THE PRIDE OF MOUNT VERNON, GEORGGGEEE WASHINNGTOONNNN!
Tumblr media
Preamble It sounds pretty and features John Adams, who sat this one out that FAT MOTHER FU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elbow Room This is a fun one about the lousiana purchase. Again this being america i'm PRETTY sure there was likely just a touch of genocide underneath this expansion, but it's still a jaunty enough toon.
Tumblr media
The Great American Melting Pot Now this one is well meaning, being about how immigration is a good thing , using the old melting pot metaphor. Given how horrendous things have gotten with immigration lately, it's a message that needs to be heard. That said they PROBABLY could've picked a better metaphor than "putting a ton of children inside a giant literal soup pot for a giant lady liberty"
Tumblr media
I mean like I said it MEANS well, I just didn't know the statue of liberty fed on the blood of children. My theory was: the statue of liberty likes dog food.
Tumblr media
Mother Neciscity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sufferin Till Suffrage After the nice nap given to me by that last one, we can get into a REALLY FUN one following the embodiment of suffrage as she celebrates how women have the right to vote.. and points out how horribly recent it was gained. It was only 55 years ago when this short aired and it 'll be 103 in august. It's a groovy bit of music about how old assholish men opressed women and how it took decades and decades of struggle for women to get the right to vote. I also like it a lot because unlike a LOT of these , it dosen't sugarcoat things: men opressed women and this was them fighting back for what they always shoudl've had. Simple and awesome, like the best of these.
Tumblr media
I'm Just a Bill
Here we are, the GOAT of Schoolhouse Rock, the most iconic one of them. And naturally the one that's been the most parodied with both simpsons
youtube
Which, fun fact, I saw way more as a kid than the original. It also makes me laugh way more as an adult because I get it fully. Family guy also took a nice stab at it though instead of doing a full parody they just made a really hilarious joke
youtube
It also looks like they got the actual voice of bill to do both of these. What a champ.
I also had the rude awakening right wing doucher Steven Crowder thought doing a parody of it against trans rights was a good idea.
Tumblr media
The original though his solid and still works. It's stuck, with me knowing how bills work primarily BECAUSE of this song, and the vocal performance is fucking dynamite. It's a work that really stands the test of time , from the image of bill sadly sittnig onc aptial hill to the jubilant ending of him becoming a law. It's really great stuff and easy to see why it endured enough to get tons of parodies and is clearly still shown in school enough for people to STILL recognize it decades later.

Three Ring Government: This one is about how a goverment is like a circus. Granted I would've had congress and the house both as clown cars full of people who either put party bias over personal intrests or are a giant pack of ghouls who care nothing but for their own power. What i'm saying is while this works perfectly for the intended demo for a jaded old man like me it's pretty fucking depressing, especially since 2/3 of these branches aren't in the best shape right now. It''s not bad on it's own merits, it's just hard to watch and not wince wat what the right is doing to it right now or have done to women, people of color and the country in general.

These are a great batch of shorts though. Maybe one day we'll return to school but for now we say good bye to this and hello to MORE EXPOSIONS. THE EXPLOSIONS NEVER END THE EXPLOSIONS NEVER

Will there always be an England?
Although there is a British song from 1939 that has the line "There will always be an England," is that true? Some have noted cultural dissolution, enough so that they have wondered if England will remain. Does the Bible point to the end of England? While the British Empire was the world's largest, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has less than 1% of its 1920 empire. Will the UK lose more land such as Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands? Will it be conquered? Do biblical and Greco-Roman Catholic prophecies point to the end of the UK? Could the British people be descendants of Joseph's son Ephraim? Why does the Bible show it will be conquered? Dr. Thiel and Stever Dupuie go over these matters.
A written article of related interest is available titled ‘Will There Always Be an England?’

A reader sent me a link to the following published by the European Conservative:
Will There Always Be an England?
Most Americans are Anglophiles. It’s in our blood. Yes, our ancestors fought a bloody revolution to free ourselves from the British crown, but outside of the United Kingdom itself, you will find no people more eager to swoon over British royalty than Americans. More substantively, our love and admiration for the British has to do with a heady mix of Churchill, Wilberforce, Tolkien, Lennon and McCartney, and other extraordinary examples of courage, wisdom, and creativity.
For an American, it’s not only shocking, but also painful, to see what is happening to Britain today. The country of the Magna Carta, the nation that gave the world liberal democracy, and a people who stood indomitably against the Nazi totalitarian menace, succumb to utter demoralization and soft (for now) totalitarianism imposed on them by a corrupt ruling class. How far away seem the lyrics to the popular 1939 patriotic song “There’ll Always Be An England,” which lifted spirits through the Blitz:
There’ll always be an England,
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.
It has become possible now to doubt that sentimental claim—precisely because England has ceased to mean much to its ruling class, and to many Englishmen. A friend who is a respected member of the British establishment wrote to me last week in despair.
“No sign it’s going to get any better, or that there is any way the country can come back from this,” he said. “We’ve faced wars, recessions, and pandemics for centuries, but this is different. You can’t reverse the slow dissolution of an entire culture and people, which is what is happening to the English.”
What prompted those black-pilled lines was my telling him of a dinner conversation I had had the night before in Budapest. I dined with a middle-class English couple in the Hungarian capital to take possession of a flat they had just bought as a kind of bolthole, to escape their native land if it becomes necessary. One of them had been born in the UK to parents who escaped the 1956 Soviet occupation of Hungary. They had gone west seeking ordered liberty; now their son and his family were contemplating reversing the course for the same reason.
The wife told me that she is friends with a white British couple who lost their daughter for a couple of years to a Pakistani grooming gang. The mum and dad went to the police, begging for help. As with so many white British people in similar circumstances, they received none. …
Britain’s tragedy is no doubt being closely watched all across Europe, especially in countries facing the same challenges from migration, crime, and national identity. It was a bit surprising that the first serious migration-related race riots happened not in France or Germany, but in the UK. Nevertheless, what’s happening in Britain today is likely to happen in several continental European countries tomorrow. We should expect governments to react with the same contempt for free speech and patriotism as the British government has. Remember that EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told the mandarins of Davos earlier this year that the greatest challenge Europe faces today is “disinformation.” Not uncontrolled migration, not migrant-related crime, not Islamic extremism—but disinformation, which the EU ruling class no doubt considers to include noticing and complaining about all these things. Brussels and other European capitals will watch closely to see how well Starmer’s methods work. 08/12/24 https://europeanconservative.com/articles/commentary/will-there-always-be-an-england/
The protests and counter protests and government comments in the UK in the past few weeks have made some wonder if there will always be an England.
Biblical prophecies point to its elimination.
Here are a few comments published by the old Worldwide Church of God last century:
Empires come and go, nations rise and fall, and somehow through it all the human race has usually managed to land on its feet.
So who is to say this generation is any different? The British people have maintained for decades “there will always be an England.” and so far they have been right. Do we have any reason not to be just as optimistic about the particular age of history in which we are living?
Can All Things Continue? …
The famous Olivet discourse is a good case in point. Here Christ not only foretold the destruction of Jerusalem, but He spoke of a series of global calamities that would herald a pivotal turning point in human history.
In verses 5 through 10 of Matthew 24, He outlined the usual scenario of wars, famines and persecutions that seem to accompany the disintegration of civilizations. These events could be applied to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. but in verse 21 Christ went on to expand the scope of His prophecy: “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.” …
Either we collectively change our ways or prepare ourselves for a rather grim scenario. (Ritter G. Are We Living in the Last Days? – Part 4. Good News, November 1976)
Today the nations of the Western world, especially the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and South Africa … have gone after strange gods. These gods are not the kind made from sticks, metal, or stone, but are typified by ideas, concepts and institutions.
Repeatedly Western democracies have looked to their leaders, native institutions, liberal democratic ideologies, and more recently science and technology, to bail them out in time of crisis. Most Americans somehow feel that the latest face in the election sweepstakes, … the free enterprise system, the workings of the constitution, greater material growth, more jobs, or lower taxes will somehow see them through. The people of Britain simultaneously lie prostrated before the altars of state socialism, trade unionism, the “I’m-all-right-Jack” and “There’ll-always-be-an-England” concepts.
If the English-speaking nations of the world think that they can continue to blindly follow such shopworn idols into the promised land, they are sadly mistaken. All the ideologies, economic theories and governmental formulas known to man will never bring salvation either on a national or individual basis. The only One that can do that is the Supreme Ruler and Creator of the universe.
Until humanity undertakes a fundamental and radical overhaul of their social faiths and ideologies, the plagues, calamities and catastrophes recorded in Leviticus 26, Jesus Christ’s Olivet prophecy and the book of Revelation will ultimately be the order of the day. In this respect, the words of the apostle Peter have never been more relevant than to this generation: “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ [the real Savior] appointed for you, Jesus” (Acts 3:19).
There is still time for many to come out of the religious Babylon that currently deceives this world (Rev. 18:4). If you as an individual are interested, why not begin to go back and take inventory of your current religious beliefs? Study them in the light of what God says in the Bible. (Ritter G. 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse – The White Horse – False Religion. WCG booklet, 1976)
What is this abomination? This refers to Daniel 11:31 and Matthew 24:15…That will be a time when the UNITED Europe shall appear–the revival of the medieval “Holy Roman Empire.” We shall then be warned, and readied to be taken to a place of refuge and safety from the Great Tribulation. Forty-five days later “the beasts armies” will surround Jerusalem. Thirty days later the Great Tribulation will probably start with a nuclear attack on London and Britain–and possibly the same day or immediately after, on the United States and Canadian cities. The GREAT TRIBULATION, we shall fully then realize, is the time of “Jacob’s Trouble,” spoken of in Jeremiah 30:7. And Jacob’s name was named on Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh (Gen. 48:16). At that time a third of the people in our nations will die, or shall have died, by famine and disease epidemics; another third will dies of the war–our cities being destroyed (Ezek. 6:6), and the remaining third will be carried to the land of our enemies as slaves (Ezek. 5:12). (Armstrong HW. The Time We Are In, Now. Pastor General’s Report-Vol 1, No. 15, November 20, 1979, Page 2).
The Bible states:
33 I will scatter you among the nations and draw out a sword after you; your land shall be desolate and your cities waste (Leviticus 26:33).
Nuclear and other high-tech weapons (as well as emp, electromagnetic pulse, bombs), as well as devastating solar flares, are ways to make land desolate and modern cities waste (for more on emp-weapons and solar flares see Nuclear EMP Attack on UK Called ‘Quite Likely’).
Events that resemble nuclear or similar devastation are part of the prophesied curses mentioned in the Bible:
23 ‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning (Deuteronomy 29:23).
19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts The land is burned up, And the people shall be as fuel for the fire; No man shall spare his brother. 20 And he shall snatch on the right hand And be hungry; He shall devour on the left hand And not be satisfied; Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm. 21 Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; Together they shall be against Judah (Isaiah 9:19-21).
6 In all your dwelling places the cities shall be laid waste (Ezekiel 6:6).
There will NOT “Always be an England.” Nor the United States for that matter (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).
Consider the following about the old British Empire:
In 1913, 412 million people lived under the control of the British Empire, 23 percent of the world’s population at that time. It remains the largest empire in human history and at the peak of its power in 1920, it covered an astonishing 13.71 million square miles – that’s close to a quarter of the world’s land area. (McCarthy N. The Biggest Empires In Human History. Statista, December 19, 2019)
The United Kingdom now has 93,628 sq miles of land (United Kingdom, Wikipedia, accessed 08/15/24). That is a reduction of size by 99%! And the UK will lose more territory as well as will one day be conquered.
Despite British hopes for its future, the UK will continue to lose territories will one day include Northern Ireland. Notice a few prophetic warnings that are consistent with that:
24 ‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. 25 For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants. 26 You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you 27 (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled), 28 lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you. (Leviticus 18:24-28)
23 ‘And if by these things you are not reformed by Me, but walk contrary to Me, 24 then I also will walk contrary to you, and I will punish you yet seven times for your sins. 25 And I will bring a sword against you that will execute the vengeance of the covenant; when you are gathered together within your cities I will send pestilence among you; and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. (Leviticus 26:23-25)
58 “If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59 then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues — great and prolonged plagues — and serious and prolonged sicknesses. 60 Moreover He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed. 62 You shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. 63 And it shall be, that just as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess. (Deuteronomy 28:58-63)
These territorial losses will include Northern Ireland and Gibraltar, as well as England, Wales, and Scotland (and also its naval presence in Cyprus and other places). Yes, one day, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be no more.
The Bible ties the British people in with the descendants of Joseph’s son Ephraim–for details, see our free online book: Lost Tribes and Prophecies: What will happen to Australia, the British Isles, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and the United States of America?
The Bible specifically ties lack of repentance as the reasons reason that the King of Assyria (the final European Babylonian King of the North Beast power) will become Ephraim’s/England’s king:
3 I taught Ephraim to walk…5…But the Assyrian shall be his king, Because they refused to repent. 6 And the sword shall slash in his cities, Devour his districts, And consume them, Because of their own counsels. 7 My people are bent on backsliding from Me. Though they call to the Most High, None at all exalt Him. (Hosea 11:3a, 5b-7)
The prophesied shame is starting to come upon the Anglo-American powers who instead of repenting have more and more embraced and promoted various sins. The Assyrian king is also prophesied to eliminate the USA per Isaiah 10:5-12.
Furthermore, it may be of interest to note that the Roman Catholics have a lot of predictions about England’s fate, though many of the older Roman Catholic prophecies that mention the English were written before that area actually was called England (and of course, if any apply to the USA, Canada, Australia, and/or New Zealand, they were not formed as we now understand them until several centuries after some of the Roman Catholic prophecies were first written). Hence, these are errors, changes, and/or distortions in translations (probably often just a “modernized” translation of some form of the word “Anglo”). Many of these private prophecies are believed to be intended to somehow refer to the British-descended peoples.
The following seems to predict after the time of movies and rockets, there will be bloodshed in Europe (WWII or civil unrest in Europe?), but that ultimately England will suffer:
Old English Prophecy (On a tombstone at the Kirby cemetery, Essex).
When pictures look alive, with movements free, (T.V. and movies)
When ships like fish swim beneath the sea, (Submarines)
When outstripping birds can soar in the sky (Jets and rockets)
The half the world drenched in blood shall die…
In Germany begins a dance,
Which passes through Italy, Spain, and France, But England shall pay the piper. (Dupont, pp. 21-22)
What several Roman Catholic prophecies appear to generally state is that there will be some type of civil unrest in parts of Europe which occur after England becomes less powerful, and that ultimately England (and/or perhaps more accurately, the English/Anglo peoples–for many reasons, including the fact that the nation was not actually called “England” as early as some translations of the early private prophecies below term it) will be severely chastised, and basically the Anglo-nations will no longer be self-governed. Here are several along those lines:
Saint Cataldus of Tarentino (c. 500): “The Great Monarch will be in war till he is forty years of age….he will assemble great armies and expel tyrants from his empire. He will conquer England and other island empires” (Connor, p.30).
Foretelling the fall of France and England, the famous Jesuit Father Necton, said in 1772, “When England shall wane in power, the destruction of Paris will be near at hand” (Culligan E. The Last World War and the End of Time. The book was blessed by Pope Paul VI, 1966. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), p. 84).
Priest Jerome Botin of Cahors (died 1420): Woe to the sea, woe to the land,…and woe to the people of the Island (England), because the inheritance of the Lord shall abandon them, and for the few remaining faithful in it there shall be much affliction, says the Spirit. (Rossi, p. 24)
Priest Nectou (d. 1772): …when England shall begin to wane in power, the destruction of Paris shall be at hand. This shall be a sign. England shall, in her turn, suffer a more frightful revolution than that of France (Culleton, p. 176).
The Ecstatic of Tours…”When everyone believes that peace is assured, when everyone least expects it, the great happenings will begin. Revolution will break out in Italy almost at the same time as in France. For some time, the Church will be without a Pope. England, too, will have much to suffer…” (Dupont, p.37)
St. Edward (11th century). “The extreme corruption and wickedness of the English nation has provoked the just anger of God. When malice has reached the fullness of its measure, God will, in His wrath, send to the English people evil spirits who will punish and afflict them with severity by separating the green tree from its parent stem the length of three furlongs. But at last this same tree, through the compassionate mercy of God and without any national assistance, shall return to its original root, reflourish, and bear abundant fruit.”… It is to be noted, too, that there was no English nation as such in the 11th Century, but only a kingdom of the Angles and Saxons. This discrepancy, however, may be due to a mis-transcription {the preceding was the comment from Dupont personally on the Edward’s prophecy}, Dupont, pp.18,19)
Saint Edward (d. 1066) “The extreme corruption and wickedness of the English nation has provoked the just anger of God.  When malice shall have reached the fullness of its measure, God will, in His wrath, send to the English people wicked spirits, who will punish and afflict them with great severity…” (Culleton, p. 137).
Mother Shipton (d. 1551) “The time will come when England shall tremble and quake…London shall be destroyed forever after . . . and then York shall be London and the Kingdom governed by three Lords appointed by a Royal Great monarch…who will set England right and drive out heresy (Culleton, p. 163).
It has been foretold in 597, by ST. Columbkille…”…English nobility shall sink into horrible life–wars shall be proclaimed against them, by means of which the franatically proud race shall be subdued, and will be harassed from every quarter. The English shall dwindle into disreputable people and shall forever be derived of power” (Culligan, pp. 118-119).
St. Columbine (d. 597): The enemies of the English shall be aroused in battle–they who reside in the eastern and western parts of the world…the English shall be defeated … After the English shall be defeated in this battle, they shall be harassed by every quarter; like a fawn surrounded by a pack of voracious hounds, shall be the position of the English amidst their enemies. The English afterwards shall dwindle down to a disreputable people (Culleton, R. Gerald. The Prophets and Our Times. Nihil Obstat: L. Arvin.  Imprimatur: Philip G. Scher, Bishop of Monterey-Fresno, November 15, 1941.  Reprint 1974, TAN Books, Rockford (IL), pp. 131,132).
St. Senanus (d. 560): They (English) themselves will betray each other: in consequence their sovereignty will be broken…One monarch will rule in Ireland over the English (Culleton, The Prophets and Our Times, p. 128).
Merlin (7th century): After destruction of England…shall come a dreadful man…he shall set England on the right way and put out all heresies (Culleton, p. 132).
Ancient Irish source: England will again injure the Irish…This will be a sign for the frightful punishment of England…England suffers the same degradation as she meted out to her neighbor, and for the same length of time. Not the smallest fraction of time in this long period shall be remitted…Never shall world power be hers again…France restores order in England (Culleton, pp. 234,235).
St. Malachy (12th century). “Ireland will suffer English oppression for a week of centuries, but will preserve her fidelity to God and His Church. At the end of that time she will be delivered, and the English in turn must suffer severe chastisement. Ireland, however, will be instrumental in bringing back the English to the unity of Faith.” (Dupont, p.15)
Certain Greco-Roman Catholic sources claim that the first portion involving oppression in the above Malachy prophecy has been fulfilled. But notice that the above also claims that England will suffer from severe chastisement. And apparently many those that survive will become some type of “Catholic” (probably through desperation, coercion, deception, and/or force).
Also notice:
Fr. Balthassar Mas (17th century). “I saw a land swallowed up by the sea and covered with water. But afterwards, I saw that the sea receded little by little and the land could be seen again. The tops of the towers in the city rose again above the water and appeared more beautiful than before, and I was told that this land was England.’ (Dupont, p.32)
The above may have several interpretations. Figuratively, it may mean that Protestant England is to be destroyed and will become some type of Catholic. Or it may simply mean some type of tsunami will affect England. However, notice that elsewhere England is prophesied to become Roman Catholic:
Bl. Anna-Maria Taigi (19th century). Whole nations will come back to the Church and the face of the earth will be renewed. Russia, England, and China will come into the Church. (Dupont, p.45)
Of course, Russia and China will finally turn on the European power (Daniel 11:44-45), but the Bible shows that for a while “All who dwell on the earth will worship him {the European beast power}, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).
Anyway, according to biblical prophecies, England will one day be conquered (for details, see the free online book: Lost Tribes and Prophecies: What will happen to Australia, the British Isles, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and the United States of America?). The Bible shows that this will be by a European power that will be tied to the religion of the City of Seven Hills–which is Rome. The fact that Roman Catholic prophecies seem to look forward to that suggests that those who will conquer England will believe that their god will want them to do so.

another point onto my self-producing female idols post:
i dont want jyp to just make itzy and nmixx write songs now. i dont want there to be pressure on them, that it's shameful that they don't, or anything like that. itzy and nmixx should be able to do whatever they choose with their music, and for idols, that does not have to mean writing and producing. there are many, many other aspects to being an idol.
from another perspective of mine, i believe this comes from the pure admiration for stray kids that at some point becomes bitterness. cite Brutus by the Buttress. just that whole damn song. "i don't want what you have, i wanna be you."
(another rant/more like a vent under readmore)
i admire them, their dedication, their passion, their music, their performances, obviously i do, and i wouldn't be such a fan if i didn't. but then hits the envy. yes, stray kids worked their fucking asses off to get where they are now, but can we not admit that they have some privilege?
stray kids, like other big jyp groups, is known for having a packed up the fucking wazoo schedule. jyp puts a SHIT TON of funding into stray kids. and do you know why? because jyp trusts them.
i really need to emphasize just how much creative control and liberty stray kids has with their careers. i have yet to find a song by them that does NOT have one of their names cited as a credit. 3racha is credited on damn near every single fucking song they've ever released. EVEN on composing. EVEN on arranging (bang chan you sly dog)
stray kids was FORMED BY BANG CHAN. their concepts were CREATED BY THEM. EVERYTHING was up to them. this is AMAZING! this is a very very very very GOOD thing!!!!
all i'm saying is that this is where i start to get envious. this is where i start to wish we had more. i start to wish that there was a world in which women in the same career had the same playing field, that a company as big as jyp could trust a group of women to do those same things.
bang chan was a trainee for 7 years, and was given the privilege of creating his own group, creating his own future, telling his story. jinni was a trainee for 6, and was put into JYP's failed attempt at an experimental group and left before even hitting the one year anniversary of her debut.
i know bang chan suffered. i know stray kids suffered. i am saying that i mourn women not being given this same freedom. the freedom stray kids had to look for their way, to make unconventional songs that they believed in, to have their own names on every song they put out, and for all this, be able to get the backing of one of the biggest entertainment companies in korea.
g-idle does this, and their only backing is a shit company that steps all over them but only gives them what they need because they are their only money makers. purple kiss aims to do this, and barely gets anywhere near the same amount of input on their music.
this was messy. for the sake of drama i will now put lyrics from the buttress's brutus.
"...or am i just wishing i could be like you? that the people would see me too as a poet, and not just the muse."
"i'll never forget that you showed me to make art, and i know the love you showed me came from a pure and noble heart. i love you, and if you want, i'll call you 'king.' but why do i lie awake each night thinking instead of you, it should be me?"
“what’s more wrong, that i, too, wish to be great, or that my mother wished she’d had a son?”
"what motivates me, hatred, is it love? what's more wrong, that i, too, wish to be great, or my mother wished she'd had a son?"

and here is what is ironic about the myth of prometheus, for while his authorship of the manual on regretting magnamity remains most prominent in the minds of most casual-wikipedia-scrollers and high-school-latin-class-takers and mary-shelley-copy-pasters, the scrawled lightning ladder of his genetic derivation is even more interesting: aidos, his daughter, was the goddess of shame; deucalion, his son, survived a great flood by heeding his father’s advice and building a gigantic boat. from what little has been pinned to agent prometheus on his personal conspiracy board, the woman deserves her moniker, for her very presence and her very impersonal words fill saint with shame and the desire to build a gigantic boat. being crushed by ten feet of timber would make him squeak out a better song than what he’s composed, he’s certain. so he resolves to be impersonal. professional.
and here is what takes precedence over all other thoughts when he realises just who he pulled aside to serve as the traumatised forensic scientist about to testify to his vandalising of the body’s chalk outline: saint does not want to get his arse kicked. the aforementioned event, you see, is in no way mutually exclusive with other events, such as being fired for being one drop of soft lemonade away from the brooklyn 78th bullpen. so he resolves to be charismatic. jazz hands will not salvage this. maybe jazz feet will. a jazz throat choking up jazz bile sounds good to him, too.
“indeed you are.” the reply is coughed out at last, even escorted by a thumbs up that metamorphoses into a finger gun before figuring that certain gestures may be more offensive to people who and being stuffed firmly in his pocket. there is no trump card to be tossed into his deck by lady luck, no surprise testimony to close the case on his lyrical in a triumphant reprise of his tragic jingle. he must cut his losses before his singing career is most thoroughly sunk. “if there’s one thing i’ve learned from teaching, it’s that honesty is the best policy. except with parents.”
and then there should be a nationwide alarm bursting their eardrums, an ambulance blaring as a cerberus-endorsed model of sports car. a diversion other than his nervous, muted rendition of the alphabet song and the clinking of his tiny mallets against one another. his silver tongue, ever-tarnished, decides otherwise.
“i’ve been aimless since my departure from the academy,” saint tacks on, sentimentality submerging him as suddenly as he surprised the other agent with that mess of a demo. he takes the liberty of saying resignation as through it is the truth, as though he isn’t still forced into digital breakout rooms with students who need their own fort knox vaults. he plays the dies irae on the xylophone as he speaks. “if i’d cared to befriend my colleagues i could’ve connected with the music teacher, learned how to create a melody worthy of being pledged allegiance to every day. oh, do you reckon I need to make it more patriotic? add in some eagle sounds?”
Robyn really fucking hated it when other people weren't careful and found a way to walk into her. Clearly she had a sign on her that said to ignore the full bodysuit and gloves, and attempt to make contact with her anyway. She rounds on the person, ready to give them a piece of her mind, but is instantly stopped by the vision in front of her.
Agent Billiard stood before her, shoving an object into a fanny pack that also served as a xylophone. Was this a new form of Cerberus torture or had working at the company for less than a year, already shattered his psyche?
She didn't have time to react when he told her he needed her, and that included preparing herself for what he was about to unleash on her. A part of her wanted to interrupt and stop him because it was truly one of the worst things she'd ever heard, but it was also like watching a car crash. She was drawn to the disaster happening in front of her - unable to stop it even if she wanted it to.
Oh she would find a way to tap into the cameras later and get the video of this because whatever was going on in front of her was truly a momentous occasion that deserved to be shared. And edited. And potentially put on social media.
When it was over, there was a pause before he asked her for an opinion and another pause while Robyn attempted to gather her thoughts. Did he know she produced music? Was that why he'd chosen her? Not enough production could save whatever that was though.
"Am I the first person who's heard that?" She finally settled on. A neutral comment that hid her true gut reaction of wanting to go back into her lab and scream with horror or laughed - whichever came out first. "Do you want my honest opinion?"

I just CAN'T stop thinking about how different Kim could have been.
She didn't have to be innocent. She could've been a Euridyce-type. Tough, scrappy, too mature for her age, who falls in love in spite of herself, making it all the more tragic when Chris leaves her.
She didn't have to be a dancer. I have full respect for sex workers, and I also know it isn't peaches and cream for a lot of women, but in this story, having the "pure virginal Asian girl sex worker” is just fetishization. This specific story doesn’t benefit Asian women, nor does it benefit sex workers. She could've been a regular waitress at a gross bar with sleezy clients. Her having sex with Chris didn't have to be a transaction. Maybe she’s taking his order, or she’s overwhelmed and he asks her if she’s okay. They have an instant connection and start to banter. Then they have sex, not because Chris wants to protect her, but because Kim wants to do it. She has agency in beginning a relationship with Chris. Her having that agency would prevent her from being oversexualized, but not purified either, and she’s still a young woman in a shitty life situation.
Kim could've realized how unrealistic it was to put all of her hopes into one person from a different world. In the time-jump, she could've accepted that Chris was never coming back, so finding out he's looking for her can be a deep shock. She can have so much internal conflict. Instead of a nightmare, there could've been a Kim version of "Why, God, Why?" Thoughts racing through her head like, Why does he think he can come back after leaving me? Why do I actually miss him, after I've moved on? How can I hate him and love him at the same time? Do I go after him? But she ends with a tiny bit of hope.
She didn't have to kill herself. I love that a big driving force in her character in the show later on is her love for her son. Killing Thuy, leaving for Bangkok, giving Tam to Chris and Ellen. I found her love for Tam far more compelling than her love for Chris. But having Kim kill herself does a disservice to the character. I know that Madame Butterfly ends with her suicide, but if you’re trying to do a modern adaptation I think you can have some liberties with the plot.
You know what could have been gut-wrenching while still keeping Kim as a complex, interesting character??
Kim gets one more scene with Chris, in private. Because she deserves to speak with him alone. Chris tries to give excuses, “You can’t make me choose between you and Ellen, you and I were never mean to happen, but I’ll always have feelings for you, etc.” In the midst of all of this, Kim kisses Chris. She needs to see if she feels anything. If she should have hope for herself, not just for Tam.
The kiss isn’t like the kisses from before. It isn’t joyous and youthful. It’s desperate and hungry and sad. Chris kisses back only for a second, but he breaks away, clearly longing but not giving in. He’s choosing Ellen. So Kim concludes, even if there’s no hope for herself, there’s still hope for her son. Maybe that could be enough.
Kim still gives Tam away to Chris and Ellen.
We see moments in Tam’s life, perhaps in an abstract way or silent way. Missing his mom. Being ostracized by his peers for being Asian. Targeted and abused. Hated and isolated. Longing for a connection for his culture that his white family will never fully understand. Tam is more and more defeated throughout this sequence.
Down center stage, Kim watches all of this happen. Tam has a roof over his head, food to come home to, stability. He now has a chance at life, but it will never be easy. And Kim realizes that now. She did all of this for nothing. But it’s too late. She starts singing a soft, broken reprise of The American Dream. Tam joins the song at moments. Slowly, it gets more and more manic, angry, the music builds, and she is screaming and crying the lyrics. After everything is gone, after gaining the hope she lost for so many years, she is done. Kim’s life, in a symbolic sense, is over. Blackout.
Kim has still given her life for her son. It’s still a tragedy, but a realistic one that is relevent to today.
idk how to conclude this but yeah kim deserved a better character arc

Click for the Lego being gay with a beautiful song in the background. (full YouTube description below read more)
I have been super obsessed with this cover/rewrite of this song for 5ever and a day. Heck, while taking a needed break from working on the video, I wrote up my own original lyrics for all the other verses (and chorus') to tell a whole story. I freakin' love it.
And I love Spicynoodles.
Love wins.
The character of Red Boy (and by extension Red Son) seems to be tied to India for multiple reasons across multiple interpretations of the character so when I decided to make this video, I did as much research as my really-bad-at-researching brain would allow and took what I could find of traditional Indian clothing (including for royalty and the like) and fancy buildings of theirs.
Also took some artistic liberties to try a more fantastical feel to it all.
Characters (in order of appearance): -Lego Monkie Kid- MK (Qi Xiaotian) Demon Bull King Red Son
Programs: Clip Studio Paint Adobe After Effects Handbrake
Audio: https://youtu.be/1f4bJJHi5Dw S.I.M.V = Still Image Music Video This is not an animatic. Animatics are made as if they will be animated (even when you are posting an animatic as a final product - they are still made as if they're meant to be animated)
its funny cause reds in a dress and gender is fake

Maria Pentayótissa
Maria Pentayotissa was a woman who became a folk legend in Greece thanks to her great beauty and her tragic love life. Her true name was Maria Daskalopoulou but she became known as Pentayotissa, because her home town was the Pentayí village in mountainous Phocis, Sterea Hellas. She was born in 1821 (the year the Greek Independence War started).
Tumblr media
Pentayi of Phocis.
Her father was a teacher and she was very beautiful, strong willed, educated and liberal. According to legend, she was also a cunning woman with a long string of lovers. She would choose her lovers and men would often fight physically to win her heart, or attention, at least.
That's what these folk song lyrics were based on: " Lambs get slaughtered in Sálona, rams get slaughtered in Chrissós, but on Maria's lap young lads get slaughtered".
Tumblr media
The constant fights amongst the young men were disturbing the tranquil routine of her town and the nearby villages. But Maria had found her sweetheart. She started a relationship with a young man named Dimitris Tourkakis, which was a secret known to everyone in the region and was, obviously, not an engagement. The conservative villagers were outraged, fearing Maria would set an example for other girls too, and were pressuring Maria´s brother, Yannis, to put an end to his sister´s affair.
Once, King Otto and Queen Amalia visited Ámfissa, the chief town of Phocís, and all the villages of the region sent representatives to welcome the royal couple. Maria was one of the representatives from Pentayi. It is said that Queen Amalia was so impressed by her beauty that asked her to become one of her ladies-in-waiting in the royal court in Athens.
Tumblr media
The arrival of the king and queen was followed by festivities in Sálona in their honour. Maria was dancing and Dimitris slipped right next to her in the dance, taking her hand.
Tumblr media
Her brother Yannis saw this, and pressured as he was by the narrow-minded society, he angrily dragged Maria out of the dance in front of everyone. Maria took this as a great insult and when she later met Dimitris back in their village, she told him she wished to never see him again, because he was a coward and did not support her in front of her brother and the villagers, neither did he own up and ask her hand in marriage.
Dimitris decided to prove to Maria that he was no coward and for that reason, of all things, he chose to sneak upon her brother at night and kill him. He then carried the corpse to mount Xerovouni above the village and throw it to a gorge called Kárkanos.
Tumblr media

Dimitris then rushed back to Maria's house into the night and announced the murder of her brother triumphantly. Maria cried: "Alas, brother, I killed you!". So when shepherds found the corpse days later and police arrived for inquiring, Maria's little sister, who had overheard their conversation, told the policemen of Maria's "confession". It is often suggested that the young sister knew the true context of Maria’s cry - she betrayed her due to a slow-burning envy for the attention Maria was getting thanks to her beauty.
Dimitris Tourkakis and Maria Daskalopoulou were lead to the Criminal Court of Missolonghi. Tourkakis was sentenced to many years or life in prison but there are many different tellings regarding what happened to Maria, who was being trialed as an accomplice. All versions agree to this: Maria was punished lightly.
According to the most popular version, the judges were biased because of her beauty and gave her a short sentence. Another version claims that a juror's son pressured the judges to not punish her because he didn't want his own affair with Maria to be revealed. And according to a third, a guard helped Maria to flee prison, seduced by her charms.
Tumblr media
Whatever the truth is, after her sentence was through (or she escaped prison), Maria returned to her place on foot. She arrived at Pentayi on Easter Day and found her people to dance on the aforementioned folk song about her. When they saw her, some were judgemental and some hostile. Maria confronted them but eventually abandoned the village, fearing she would get caught again. Maria joined a band of wanted criminals who were hiding in the mountains.

She did not stay with them for long. The priest of Pentayi found her in the mountains and appeared understanding towards her. With gentle words, he convinced her to return to her home. The priest and the villagers then helped her get an amnesty and after that her turmoil was over.
Some years later, she married Konstantinos Armaos from the nearby town of Krokílio, a widower with four children. Maria raised his children with principles and good education. She did not have children of her own. She died honoured in the age of 84.
Her story has become the subject of numerous songs and poems, novels, theatrical plays, even shadow theater plays - sometimes with a lot of liberties taken, including some which connect her to the Greek Independence War, which is entirely false. The famous actress Aliki Vougiouklaki starred as Maria Pentayotissa in a movie about her life.

I posted this as part of something else earlier, but I feel like it’s important enough for it’s own post.
Back in the 80′s, Al Gore’s wife & friends decided that Rock Music was The Devil.  Sometimes literally.  So they started up a little group called the PMRC -
Dee Snider, lead singer and songwriter for Twisted Sister, testified at a senate hearing about it.
Transcript, courtesy this internet web page, with full contents of the hearing here.  I encourage you to at least look at that contents page, to see who was involved in the hearing.  John Denver, Frank Zappa, and Uncle Al Gore, MTV.
Any emphasis added is my own.
==================
I do not know if it is morning or afternoon. I will say both. Good morning and good afternoon.
My name is Dee Snider. That is S-n-i-d-e-r. I have been asked to come here to present my views on "the subject of the content of certain sound recordings and suggestions that recording packages be labeled to provide a warning to prospective purchasers of sexually explicit or other potentially offensive content."
Before I get into that, I would like to tell the committee a little bit about myself. I am 30 years old, I am married, I have a 3-year-old son. I was born and raised a Christian and I still adhere to those principles. Believe it or not, I do not smoke, I do not drink, and I do not do drugs.
I do play in and write the songs for a rock and roll band named Twisted Sister that is classified as heavy metal, and I pride myself on writing songs that are consistent with my above-mentioned beliefs.
There are many facets to this complex issue and time does not permit me to address all of them. However, my feelings are expressed for the most part by the August 5, 1985, letter to the Parents Music Resource Center from Mr. Stanley Gortikov, president of the Recording Industry Association of America.
This letter was a formal response to the PMRC petition of the RIAA. The only part of this document I do not support is Mr. Gortikov's unnecessary and unfortunate decision to agree to a so-called generic label on some selected records. In my opinion this should be retracted.
Since I seem to be the only person addressing this committee today who has been a direct target of accusations from the presumably responsible PMRC, I would like to use this occasion to speak on a more personal note and show just how unfair the whole concept of lyrical interpretation and judgment can be and how many times this can amount to little more than character assassination.
I have taken the liberty of distributing to you material and lyrics pertaining to these accusations. There were three attacks in particular which I would like to address.
Accusation No. 1. This attack was contained in an article written by Tipper Gore, which was given the forum of a full page in my hometown newspaper on Long Island. In this article Ms. Gore claimed that one of my songs, "Under the Blade," had lyrics encouraging sadomasochism, bondage, and rape.
The lyrics she quoted have absolutely nothing to do with these topics. On the contrary, the words in question are about surgery and the fear that it instills in people. Furthermore, the reader of this article is led to believe that the three lines she quotes go together in the song when, as you can see, from reading the lyrics, the first two lines she cites are an edited phrase from the second verse and the third line is a misquote of a line from the chorus.
That the writer could misquote me is curious, since we make it a point to print all our lyrics on the inner sleeve of every album. As the creator of "Under the Blade," I can say categorically that the only sadomasochism, bondage, and rape in this song is in the mind of Ms. Gore.
Accusation No. 2. The PMRC has made public a list of 15 of what they feel are some of the most blatant songs lyrically. On this list is our song "We're Not Gonna Take It," upon which has been bestowed a "V" rating, indicating violent lyrical content.
You will note from the lyrics before you that there is absolutely no violence of any type either sung about or implied anywhere in the song. Now, it strikes me that the PMRC may have confused our video presentation for this song with the song with the lyrics, with the meaning of the lyrics.
It is no secret that the videos often depict story lines completely unrelated to the lyrics of the song they accompany. The video "We're Not Gonna Take It" was simply meant to be a cartoon with human actors playing variations on the Roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote theme. Each stunt was selected from my extensive personal collection of cartoons.
You will note when you watch the entire video that after each catastrophe our villain suffers through, in the next sequence he reappears unharmed by any previous attack, no worse for the wear.
By the way, I am very pleased to note that the United Way of America has been granted a request to use portions of our "We're Not Gonna Take It" video in a program they are producing on the subject of the changing American family. They asked for it because of its "light-hearted way of talking about communicating with teenagers."
It is gratifying that an organization as respected as the United Way of America appreciates where we are coming from. I have included a copy of the United Way's request as part of my written testimony. Thank you, United Way.
Accusation No. 3. Last Tuesday a public forum regarding the lyric controversy was held in New York. Among the panelists was Ms. Gore. Trying to stem the virtual tidal wave of antiratings sentiment coming from the audience, Ms. Gore made the following statement:
I agree this is a small percentage of all music, thank goodness. But it is becoming more mainstream. You look at even the t-shirts that kids wear and you see Twisted Sister and a woman in handcuffs sort of spread-eagled.
This is an outright lie. Not only have we never sold a shirt of this type; we have always taken great pains to steer clear of sexism in our merchandise, records, stage show, and personal lives. Furthermore, we have always promoted the belief that rock and roll should not be sexist, but should cater to males and females equally.
I feel that an accusation of this type is irresponsible, damaging to our reputation, and slanderous. I defy Ms. Gore to produce such a shirt to back up her claim. I am tired of running into kids on the street who tell me that they cannot play our records any more because of the misinformation their parents are being fed by the PMRC on TV and in the newspapers.
These are the only three accusations I have come across. All three are totally unfounded. Who knows what other false and irresponsible things may have been said about me or my band.
There happens to be one area where I am in complete agreement with the PMRC, as well as the National PTA and probably most of the parents on this committee. That is, it is my job as a parent to monitor what my children see, hear, and read during their preteen years. The full responsibility for this falls on the shoulders of my wife and I, because there is no one else capable of making these judgments for us.
Parents can thank the PMRC for reminding them that there is no substitute for parental guidance. But that is where the PMRC's job ends.
The beauty of literature, poetry, and music is that they leave room for the audience to put its own imagination, experiences, and dreams into the words. The examples I cited earlier showed clear evidence of Twisted Sister's music being completely misinterpreted and unfairly judged by supposedly well-informed adults.
We cannot allow this to continue. There is no authority who has the right or the necessary insight to make these judgments, not myself, not the Federal Government, not some recording industry committee, not the PTA, not the RIAA, and certainly not the PMRC.
I would like to thank the committee for this time, and I hope my testimony will aid you in clearing up this issue.
The CHAIRMAN. Thank you, Mr. Snider.
Mr. Snider, let us suppose that there is music which, say, glorifies incest; not yours, but suppose that there is some music that glorifies incest. Do you think parents should know about it, or do you think that it is just a matter between whoever is selling the record and whoever is buying it?
Mr. SNIDER. As I said in my testimony, I think it is very important that parents be aware that these lyrics exist.
The CHAIRMAN. How could they find out about it?
Mr. SNIDER. Well, quite simply, as a parent myself and as a rock fan, I know that when I see an album cover with a severed goat's head in the middle of a pentagram between a woman's legs, that is not the kind of album I want my son to be listening to.
If I read a title on the back of, say, Somebody's Ice Cream Castle, a title called "If the Kid Can't Make You Come," whatever it is, I realize that is a sexually explicit song. By just looking at the cover, looking at the lyrics, looking at, I should say, the titles, that should cover just about all bases.
The few albums that do not express their intentions on the cover or in the song titles, I think a parent could take it home, listen to it. And I do not think there are too many retail stores that would deny them the ability to return the album for something different.
The CHAIRMAN. Do you think that most parents, or even kids for that matter, know everything that is on an album when they buy it, when the child buys the album?
Mr. SNIDER. I do not know half the things that are on half the albums I own. Some of the bands I listen to, I listen for musical reasons. Other bands I listen to for lyrical reasons.
I know that AC/DC, one of my favorite bands, sings a lot of songs glorifying hell and damnation. I am a Christian. I do not believe -- I do not want to go to hell and I do not want to be damned for all  time. But I do like the feel of the songs. The lyrics have no effect on me.
Other bands who have more to say, I listen to their words and I learn from their words.
The CHAIRMAN. Do you think that now there is adequate basis for parents to know what is on the records that their kids are buying?
Mr. SNIDER. I think if they really are concerned, there is. But quite honestly, I do not think that the majority of parents are in reality as concerned as the PMRC or myself. I do not think they really want to spend the time to listen to what they might consider to be a bunch of noise. They put it on and they cannot understand a thing that is being said anyway.
And so I think most of them do not spend enough time with it.
The CHAIRMAN. Senator Hollings.
Senator HOLLINGS. Yes. Mr. Snider, I think I would just take the opportunity to make an observation. You and I would differ as to what is obscene or what is shocking or what is vulgar, and persons of goodwill will differ on that particular score.
I think that somewhere in this hearing record, we should not be on the defensive and we should not create the atmosphere that we are powerless. The absolute nature of your statement that we do not have any authority -- I only want to refer everyone to the Pacifica Foundation case, where the Federal Communications Commission was questioned as to its power to regulate public radio and TV broadcasts that was indecent but not obscene.
You see, they differed between what was indecent, what was obscene, and what was shocking. They had the seven dirty words. I think everyone remembers that case on the west coast, and the Supreme Court of the United States found that the FCC positively had the authority, and the responsibility.
I am quoting from the language of the Supreme Court:
Patently offensive, indecent material presented over the airwaves confronts the citizen not only in public, but also in the privacy of the home. The individual's right to be left alone, plainly outweighs the first amendment rights of an intruder.
This is not just a forum to rally one way or the other and hope something happens. This is a forum with a definite responsibility with respect to Congress in enunciating the duties of the Federal Communications Commission, which have been constitutionally followed.
I understand your opinion. That is why we invited you up here, to hear your words and not mine. I think that the general nature of all of this testimony of noting censorship, and first amendment absolutism, does not pertain with respect to the broadcast media. That is, of course, the main media that I guess you would agree to actually sell the records, would it not be?
Mr. SNIDER. Yes. Except I would like to clarify something. I said no authority has the right or necessary insight. I did not say you were not able to. I said you do not have the right or I do not have the right or the RIAA.
Also, we are talking about the airwaves as opposed to a person going with their money to purchase an album to play in their room, in their home, on their own time. The airwaves are something different.
I think that the FCC and even MTV have done a fair job in keeping profanity and obscenity and things like that off the public airwaves. But as far as what you listen to in your own home, that is something totally different, I feel in my opinion.
Senator HOLLINGS. I think that the record ought to be elaborated to show just that.
Previously, about 5 or 6 years ago, we had the TV networks before this committee, and pursuant to that particular hearing they then came back. I remember CBS specifically. They demonstrated how they had this film, and then got together with the producer and removed certain scenes of violence and certain four-letter words, and did not offend the producer's sense of art in the production itself.
We have made some progress. The bottom line with respect to these particular records, the Supreme Court has found, is that there is that right and that responsibility.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
The CHAIRMAN. Senator Gore.
Senator GORE. Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman.
Mr. SNIDER. Excuse me. Are you going to tell me you are a big fan of my music as well?
Senator GORE. No, I am not a fan of your music. I am aware that Frank Zappa and John Denver cover quite a spectrum, and I do enjoy them both. I am not, however, a fan of Twisted Sister and I will readily say that.
Mr. Snider, what is the name of your fan club?
Mr. SNIDER. The fan club is called the SMF Fans of Twisted Sister.
Senator GORE. And what does "SMF" stand for when it is spelled out?
Mr. SNIDER. It stands for the Sick Mother Fucking Fans of Twisted Sister.
Senator GORE. Is this also a Christian group?
Mr. SNIDER. I do not believe profanity has anything to do with Christianity, thank you.
Senator GORE. It is just an interesting choice. I was getting the impression from your presentation that you were a very wholesome kind of performer, and that is an interesting title for your fan club.
You say your song "Under the Blade" is about surgery. Have you ever had surgery with your hands tied and your legs strapped?
Mr. SNIDER. The song was written about my guitar player, Eddie Ojeda. He was having polyps removed from his throat and he was very fearful of this operation. And I said: Eddie, while you are in the hospital I am going to write a song for you.
I said it was about the fear of operations. I think people imagine being helpless on a table, the bright light in their face, the blade coming down on them, and being totally afraid that they may wake up, who knows, dead, handicapped. There is a certain fear of hospitals. That is what, in my imagination, what I see the hospitals like.
Senator GORE. Is there a reference to the hospital in the song?
Mr. SNIDER. No, there is not. But there is not a reference to a woman, sado-masochism, or -- well, bondage, yes.
Senator GORE. There is just a reference to someone whose hands are tied down and whose legs are strapped down, and he is going under the blade to be cut.
Mr. SNIDER. Yes, there is.
Senator GORE. So it is not really a wild leap of the imagination to jump to the conclusion that the song is about something other than surgery or hospitals, neither of which are mentioned in the song?
Mr. SNIDER. No, it is not a wild jump. And I think what I said at one part was that songs allow a person to put their own imagination, experiences, and dreams into the lyrics. People can interpret it in many ways.
Ms. Gore was looking for sado-masochism and bondage and she found it. Someone looking for surgical references would have found that as well.
Senator GORE. Why do you think there is so much sado-masochism and bondage in some of these new songs?
Mr. SNIDER. I cannot speak for the other artists. I am really only here to defend myself, and hopefully by speaking for myself as one person, songwriter in a band that I feel has been unjustly dumped on, that will just warn us of the dangers of what we are trying to do here. I really cannot speak for the other bands.
Senator GORE. Now, you made reference to a comment about T-shirts. I would simply note for the record that the word "T-shirts" was in plural, and one of them referred to Twisted Sister and the other referred to a woman in handcuffs. And it was not intended, as I understand it, to say that you appear with a woman in handcuffs.
There are a lot of different T-shirts and advertisements around today. I have noticed from some of the fan magazines particularly featuring heavy metal music that little sado-masochistic outfits are advertised, with the fingerless gloves and spikes and studs on them, and that these little S&M outfits are marketed to teens and preteens. Is that correct?
Mr. SNIDER. Well, they are marketed. Who buys them I am not sure.
I would just like to say, in reference to the comment about T-shirts, I have with me a taped cassette of the exact --
Senator GORE. No, I am reading from your transcript of it in your statement.
Mr. SNIDER. I will have to check the transcript, but when it was said there was no question she was referring to a Twisted Sister T-shirt. There was no question if I played the tape for anybody.
Senator GORE. Well, in your own transcript it is in plural, "T-shirts," and two examples are cited. But I do not want to belabor that point.
Now, you said that you can look at the titles of albums and look at the covers and tell what kind of material is inside. Does the title "Purple Rain" give you an indication that the material is about masturbation?
Mr. SNIDER. You mean the album title "Purple Rain"? No, it does not. I did not say in all cases. I believe I covered that there are occasional albums that are a bit misleading. I said I do not  think a store would refuse a parent who came in and said, "I do not like what is on this record. I would like my money back."
Senator GORE. So the choice the parent has, then, is to sit down and listen to every song on the album; right?
Mr. SNIDER. Or read the lyrics if they are on the record.
Senator GORE. I think that is pretty general agreement that if the lyrics are printed that is one possible solution for this.
Let us suppose the lyrics are not printed. Then what choice does a parent have? To sit down and listen to every song on the album?
Mr. SNIDER. Well, if they are really concerned about it I think that they have to.
Senator GORE. Do you think it is reasonable to expect parents to do that?
Mr. SNIDER. Being a parent is not a reasonable thing. It is a very hard thing. I am a parent and I know. OK. I am a new parent. I only have one child, maybe. But I am learning that there is a lot to being a parent that you did not expect. It is not just always a cute baby. There is a lot of labor, a lot of time, and a lot of effort that goes into it. It is not totally pleasurable.
Senator GORE. And you will find when they get a little bit older that when they are exposed to the kinds of themes that we were presented with earlier, if you love your child you are going to be concerned about that. And if you want to protect that child from unnecessary exposure to inappropriate material, you sometimes need a little help, the kind of guidance that is presented in the movie industry.
It is totally unreasonable in my view to expect parents to sit down and listen to every single song in the albums that their children buy in order to fulfill their responsibilities as parents.
Now, the only thing in your statement that I felt at all comfortable about was when you said you shared some of the concerns of the PMRC. I would simply conclude by expressing the hope that artists and the record companies will find a way to manifest that mutual concern in some self-restraint, and show a responsibility and give parents a break.
You are right: It is tough being a parent. It is even tougher being a kid. And if both are going to be able to deal with the kind of material that is coming out in popular music, it seems to me the industry has a responsibility to give them a little help.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
The CHAIRMAN. Senator Rockefeller.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Mr. Snider, do you feel that you have a responsibility as an artist to those who would hear those words that you write?
Mr. SNIDER. I feel a tremendous responsibility. And as I said, I do not put anything down on a record that I cannot stand behind 100 percent. I do not sing about drugs, sex, alcohol. I do not advocate sexism, the use of drugs and drinking, and so I do not write about those things. I only write about things I believe in.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. And that is the way you define what your responsibility is -- that is, not to write about things that you do not believe in?
Mr. SNIDER. Yes; I would say to write about things that you can stand behind. I feel myself to be a moral person and I think that I . . . have a lot of positive things to tell people about. And like I said, everything on my records I will stand behind and say, "Yes, I wrote those words and this is what it meant and this is what I was trying to say -- Yes."
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Do you think that parents, not only those who are in PMRC but other parents who are concerned here and across the country about the development of new trends in music and the lyrics that go along with that music, are naïve or somehow missing the point?
Do you think that they are unduly worried about some of these writings about sado-masochism, suicide, rape, and other things? Do you think that this is not really a serious problem for this country and our young people?
Mr. SNIDER.. That is sort of a multiple question. I do not think they are naïve and I do not think that at times they are unduly worried. But I do think sometimes they take it overly serious.
I mean, there are monster movies on all the time, they have been going on for ages, and people watch a monster movie and they get scared, and they walk away and it was just a movie. Rock and roll many times is the same thing, to try to get an effect of either laughter, sadness. A lot of the heavy metal bands are trying to scare people and just make them scared like a horror movie.
Vincent Price is not having problems because he has done all of these monster pictures. He is just an actor. I am not going to say I am just an actor, but I am entertaining people and a lot of these bands are entertaining people.
And when they were reading some of these lyrics before, I could not help but laugh. I mean, I had not heard some of them, but some of the lyrics were ridiculously ridiculous. I mean, a kid, even a kid reading that I think would go, oh my God, what is going on? It is ridiculous is the only word I can think of, some of the lyrics.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. In the vehemence with which you attacked Senator Gore's wife, I detected a defensiveness somehow on your part, a lack of assuredness on where you stand on this. Why did you feel it necessary to attribute some of the qualities to her that you did? Why was that important to your testimony?
Mr. SNIDER.. First of all, I was not attacking Senator Gore's wife. I was attacking a member of the PMRC.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. You were attacking Senator Gore's wife by name.
Mr. SNIDER.. Her name is Tipper Gore, is it not? I did not say the Senator's wife. I said Tipper Gore.
Second, defensive. I have been working very hard. I believe in the music that I play. I believe we have a very bad reputation and I have been doing a lot on my part to try and say, hey, this is not a bad thing, this is fun, this is fantasy.
Kids are coming out, they are screaming, they are yelling, they are letting out their emotions, and they are going home, they are feeling better because they let out a lot of their frustrations.
As I said, I pride myself on writing lyrics that are not offensive and that are saying something positive. Most of our songs are about personal freedom. And when somebody tells me, after all I have done to fight against sexism, that I have a shirt with a spread-eagled woman --
Senator ROCKEFELLER. All you have done to what?
Mr. SNIDER. All I have done to fight sexism. The whole Twisted Sister thing is very ambiguous: guys wearing makeup. We do not act like women; we act like men. We do not cater to the males or females in the audience. It is just one audience.
So when someone says there is a song about sado-masochism and bondage, or someone says "We're Not Gonna Take It" is violent lyrical content, which is what it has been rated for, yes, I am defensive. Yes, that gets me angry. I am trying to get adults to see that heavy metal is not totally a bad thing.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. How many months in the course of a year do you spend on the road away from home?
Mr. SNIDER. In the course of a year, it would be tough to say. Over a 2-year period, I would spend about 11 months on the road and 18 months at home recording albums, things like that, doing videos.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Eleven months on the road in a 2-year period?
Mr. SNIDER. Yes, because you do a tour and then you go and record albums. I have been off the road now for 10 months.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Do you take your child with you?
Mr. SNIDER. He comes sometimes.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Nine years from now when your child is 12 and in school, will you take your child with you?
Mr. SNIDER. Absolutely.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. When your child is in school?
Mr. SNIDER. Oh, no. Thank you for clarifying. No, I would not take him out of school.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Then how would it be possible for you to, as a responsible parent, to spend the time that you suggest listening to these records and finding out what it is that you want your son to listen to and what you do not want him to listen to?
Mr. SNIDER. To be perfectly honest, 9 years from now I am going to be well retired and I will be spending more time with my son than any other parent probably ever spends. And that is one of the beautiful things about rock and roll, is that I can retire hopefully at a very early age.
But even now, I am very lucky that I have a wife who I have been going with for 10 years now, we have been married for 4, who is the most incredible mother. And while I am gone, she fills the role, and has a very difficult job, too, of mother and father.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Do you expect later on, then, that she will be going through these records?
Mr. SNIDER. I think both of us will be doing that.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Do you expect me to believe that?
Mr. SNIDER. You can. I am terminally teenage. I will be listening to my son's records.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. What about families where both parents have to work, which is an increasing phenomenon in this country now, because they have to survive? And the whole notion of parents ents sitting down and listening to record after record, tape after tape -- that is what you suggested -- does that not strike you as just a little bit naive and unrealistic?
Mr. SNIDER. No, it does not, because I know the reality of the record-buying market as a record buyer. With my allowance, I was able to, if I was lucky, afford maybe one album a week at the most. Usually it was one a month. Albums cost anywhere from $6 to $10, and that is a lot of money to a teenager, or to a pre-teenager it is a ridiculous sum.
And to a teenage kid that is a considerable amount of money. And so to listen to one record a week, I do not consider that a hardship.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. Might I ask just one final question, Mr. Chairman?
The CHAIRMAN. Bearing in mind that it is 12:30 and we have a lot of witnesses left, yes.
Senator ROCKEFELLER. I will bear that in mind and will not ask the question.
The CHAIRMAN. Senator Pressler.
Senator PRESSLER. Basically, I want to get down to your recommendations in terms of governmental action, either by this committee or by any Government body. You would recommend no governmental action in this area?
Mr. SNIDER. Absolutely.
Senator PRESSLER. What about industry actions? Would you recommend any type of voluntary labeling?
Mr. SNIDER. I do not feel that the industry -- it has been expressed by many other people that each artist has an individual agreement. One of the big things is artistic freedom in your contract. I do not think the industry can pass a ruling on that.
Senator PRESSLER. And so your legislative recommendations, would that apply just to -- not to broadcast? You would put broadcast and things that are over the airwaves in a different category than things people buy and show in their homes?
Mr. SNIDER. Well, I think we are talking about the purchase of albums and the lyrical content on the albums. That is what I am directing it to at this time.
Senator PRESSLER. So you would disagree with any action on those albums, be they by private industry or Government, any type of labeling?
Mr. SNIDER. If somebody would ask me what my opinion was, I had said earlier that I did not think there would be a problem for a parent to return an album they had taken home and found it dissatisfactory. I would like to believe that, but some retail stores will give you a hassle if you try to return an open album.
If you want a solution, maybe they could bring back -- in the fifties, you could listen to an album in the store before you purchased the album. Most record stores play the albums in the store, and there is usually a stack of those albums opened already that, if you want to go over and take a glance at the cover, which I have done many times myself, you could go over and do that.
So if you want to take some sort of industry action, I would think it would be to force the retail stores to allow people to return product that they are not satisfied with: satisfaction guaranteed.
Senator PRESSLER. Thank you very much.
The CHAIRMAN. Mr. Snider, thank you very much.
Mr. SNIDER. Thank you for your time.
===================
did you see what he did.  he said, “Ms. Gore was looking for sado-masochism and bondage and she found it.” TO AL GORE.  I love him for that.
he also said “If the kid can’t make you come” in a senate hearing, and I love him for that as well. It’s in the official senate record.
