Honestly the flaw of this show for me is how its up its own butt about how sacrificing animals to use life-saving magic is evil!  Humans kill animals to eat, I don't see how using them to perform magical surgery is that much worse.
Furthermore, Soren seems fine there's no negative side effects of  Claudia's magic affecting him.  So it seems like a very effective way to use magic.  The show never gives any consequences  for something that was painted as an easy fix but ultimately has a price.
No it doesn’t there’s not even the explanation that it reduces the animal population and effects the eco system or reduces humanities food supply. Or even have Claudia’s dark magic unable to fix Soren showing it has limits.
As it is  if  Dark magic is this powerful and consequence-free, why are healers in this universe not tapping into it?  Think of how many wounded they could of saved in that big war?
Its not like Callum’s culture was anti  Dark magic the king employed dark magic users and Callum himself even wanted to be one.

my least favorite trope is a character being a high achiever as a teenager, knowing exactly what they want to be and working their ass off, only to become a clueless adult who doesn’t really know what they’re doing because all they did was work for something that didn’t go as planned.

the thing i wish people understood is that when we talk about byler and m!leven the point is not which one is gonna be endgame – because whether we like it or not, that's out of our control
what really counts here is which outcome makes the most sense, and that's not defined by which side “wins”. like if m!leven really is endgame that won't magically turn it into a well written story lol and the only people who don't recognize how bad this outcome would be are the ones who don't give a shit about will and mike as characters
they're okay with will's feelings being nothing but a device to forward m!leven because they don't care about will, and they wouldn't find it bad if mike's character only revolved around el because actually? they're very okay with it
the only character they care about is el, but they don't even understand her or the way her arc is set up (with an emphasis on her relationship with max and “there's more to life than stupid boys” and the fact that she needs more autonomy etc). no, they make the mistake of considering her a real person and not a character, so they think she should get the boy in the end because that's what she deserves, but stories don't work like that
characters don't get what they deserve, they get what they need to push the story forward and complete their arcs, and if m!leven is canon the whole relationship arc is simply badly written and does a disservice to all the characters involved

I have to admit I'm still not very happy with the time jump/story shift as it pertains to Barry (the character). With one episode left I think I need to give up hope on ever getting a satisfying look into his childhood - learning about what happened to his family, the details of what Fuches meant when he referred to "raising [Barry] like a son," and specifically what must be incredibly complex and interesting stuff about his dad considering the somewhat contradictory facts that Barry a) has clear daddy issues and said he "never had a good male role model" and b) decided to name his son after his dad. You're telling me we set all that up and we're not actually going to expand on any of it? cool. cool
And I am just . . . not that interested in his motivations as a religious family man or whatever. There are so many aspects of this character I want to see explored, and I just don't care enough about this new stuff that was introduced for him. Like yeah, I understand the point of it - on the surface he's trying to protect his family but what he really wants is to protect the facade he's built for himself. I get it, I find it vaguely intriguing, and it makes sense for his character, but imo it's not AT ALL the most interesting thing they could be doing with him, and it's worse because it's most likely coming at the cost of not exploring the things I've wanted them to explore since season 1.

/obey me! vent/
#jessamine rambles#before i start. pls keep in mind that this is fully subjective and could just be a 'me' problem. i just want to get this off my chest#ngl i've been contemplating on whether i want to stop playing obey me. both the og game and nightbringer#idk i've been playing the game since its first month and while it's given me a lot of joy + memories + chances to befriend other ppl. i'm#pretty burned out. not to mention TIRED of my consistent disappointment with the game#the main story.....where do i start?? i actually enjoyed s1-s3 despite my qualms with the fillers and pacing but s4 disappointed me. i was#rlly looking forward to simeon's storyline and the new characters but ultimately. the devs tried to squeeze too many things into one season#not to mention that there is a notable difference in how the characters are written. i.e. beel's hunger and asmo's beauty#being watered down to running gags instead of the complexities explored in the old dg stories and chara songs#gameplay-wise. i was there when the devs raised the rewards price of the event urs and removed the demon ssrs completely#but nightbringer was the last straw for me. the amount of time it takes to grind for two games. knowing that the og app has essentially bee#abandoned by the devs?? not to mention that while the plot is interesting. i haven't touched the main story ever since the coma arc#i will give credit to the devs for improving the event stories by choosing to focus on 1-2 demons. but it has always felt like a quantity >#quality situation. esp if i were to compare it to my other fandoms#it also doesn't help that i'm currently at a point of my life where i'm questioning if i could use my time on obm for better things#seeing how the game is giving me less reasons to believe it is worth my time#idk this may also be a short-term phase since i DID get back into twst after a long hiatus and i recently got into whb#which btw has felt like a breath of fresh air despite my frustrations with the bugs and current gacha#but yeahhhh........as much as i love the obm characters and fanfics. i'm just tired#at this point i feel like the only reason why i still play the game is due to the nostalgia and so i don't waste the years of grinding#aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#this is what i get for being the type of player who only plays a few games so they can rlly dedicate their time and passion to it#that's all

It's kinda funny to me that so many people are up in arms about Neo's actions in C8 when it's easy for me to dismiss simply because that ain't Neo, yknow?
Like, Neo has never pussyfoot around murder. If she wants you dead, you gonna get dead. From Neo about to stab Yang while the latter is unconscious to Neo and Ruby falling through the void while Neo uses the visuals of Ruby's loved ones to try and weaken her enough for Neo to strangle her to death, Neo has always been fairly direct in her methods
So, it's difficult to reconcile that version of Neo with the one who would passively let her target take themselves out
Not to mention the semblance shift. Neo's semblance, Overactive Imagination, is illusions manifested via semblance glass. They shatter upon contact. Because they're illusions
That's the biggest deal breaker for me. Crwby changed her semblance so much she might as well be a whole ass other person. Fuck, it could've been an Afteran. It's not like Neo was needed here, especially with how easily she was discarded
Instead of illusions, Neo's new abilities seem to be... animorphing people/creatures she may or may not have met via semblance clones and allowing them sentience
Mcfucking what???
The point of illusions is they're not physical. It's not an actual transformation, but rather the aesthetic of one. This could have worked if they kept the semblance evolution to multiple illusions at once OR allowing physical transformation, either of which would have been super cool to see, but they pushed too far. There's too many upgrades that deviate so much from the original ability that it's a whole ass new power
So, immediately on her introduction, the og Jabber is killed(?) and in its place is... multiple Neo-Jabbers. Who can eat other creatures alive. And apparently desire to do so
McFUCJING WHAT
This implies that all her semblance clones of others have their own sentience. Which would never make sense when she never interacted with anyone in that torture scene besides Roman. Seriously why the fuck is Lionheart here? Give us nothing, king
Now, given that we are shown the stream of souls, what could have happened is the illusions were possessed by folks who needed to get a last word in, but that's not. what. happened.
Instead, we have the writers disregarding a character's inability to speak so they can brutalize a teenager in the stupidest way possible, and throwing away all logic of a fairly easy to understand power because it suits their plot needs

the thing is i loved stranger things before i thought byler was a possibility but i loved it in a non-fandom way i thought it was good but now i know it's great and if byler somehow wasn't endgame then it just wouldn't be Great anymore...it would still be good. i guess.

In episode 10 of Constantine, John says to Zed the Achilles tendon that nullifies magic is Chas' favorite trick. So he is into magic cancelling ropes... something to chew on. Happens around 5min into the episode.
sorry to have taken so long to answer this (though this is NOT the oldest chastantine related message i'm responding to tonight 😬) but also it's partly bc it's driving me insane that this wasn't a bigger deal when the episode first aired, or since then, bc obviously i went to look it up and:
Tumblr media
(from a transcript site that doesn't uh identify the speakers, which is unhelpful, but that's john & zed).
i have to admit i haven't re-watched quid pro quo in literal years despite it i guess being one of the most explicitly (lol) chastantine-y episode, between the kiss (i still remember the showrunners being like 'ooooh just wait for episode 10, john's actually going to KISS a MAN' and then it was. chas and it was a cheek kiss which tbh i do still love but also the camera refused to actually let anyone perceive it fully, SO) and the arthurian curse that's forever binding chas to john (or at least till the 47 lives run out) and the hug and the pride flag hanging directly above john, zed, and chas as john looks smugly on at chas threatening someone w a shotgun.
but from what i recall there's a lot of talk in that episode about how well john knows chas (or how well john thinks he knows chas, which is actually what gets him in trouble/punched in the face, ultimately). so that exchange is a nice little hint of that early on in the episode, of john knowing that chas has a favorite (magic related) thing john does. and bc it's chas OF COURSE it's a magic-negating magic related thing (like, bondage potential aside, my first thought was -- was that the first magic-related thing john did for/around chas, to help protect him from whatever queenie was doing to him?) anyways i'm emotional about it, it's fine.
tho obviously the bondage implications ARE NOT LOST ON ME but i think i'd have to do a refresh by watching the episode itself to get a firm grasp on how that would -- potentially work.

Reading your posts just makes me aggravated how much they fucked over Johnny and Robby's storyline, and like held Robby another kid more responsible for Kenny than they did for Johnny to Robby and Miguel. I keep seeing his stans say he tried to be there and it was Robby's fault~~~, and like I want to do a whole ass essay with caps/quotes going over just how untrue that is. I feel like I liked s5 for the Daniel stuff buy once more the Robby/Johnny stuff is so so underwhelming and disappointing.
Yeah tbh I feel bad continuing to complain about it while I rewatch bc I feel like I’ve done enough kvetching about this show for a lifetime lol. And I do think if you switch your brain off and watch it as a campy slapstick comedy there are a lot of really great moments. I also think that the reason so many of us fell in love with this show was for the shockingly heartfelt storyline, complex character arcs, and astute portrayal of generational trauma and the cycle of abuse—and that aspect of the show, on all fronts, is just nonexistent anymore. At least for me.
I also just really miss when this fandom was active and when we all had so much love for the show, even when there were disagreements. I feel like now the fandom is pretty dead as a whole but also very much split between “seasons 4-5 killed the show” and “seasons 4-5 are the best ever”. Idk I try not to pay attention to posts like you’ve described bc at the end of the day I’m not going to change my mind and they’re not going to change their mind. If they still are able to get something meaningful out of this show then genuinely all the better for them. Wish I could still enjoy it the same way too.

No but it IS funny that Eddie was looking for that Middle School Magic, since that’s exactly how the Marisol phone call scene came off. Poor guy.
🤣🤣🤣 Look I love seeing Eddie happy but it just felt SO out of place for how we normally see him when he's happy and goofy and the whole thing felt super forced anyway so I just was NOT vibing with it. (I know we've all said it but seriously, how did he get her number? And she said she was going to call him?! How did she get HIS number?! It's like Buck and Eddie showing up at her house all over again as if that made any sense and they know how to fix a celling better than an actual contractor, and why TF did they pick out PAINT COLORS for someone else's house?! it's ABSURD in the worst way)
ANYWAY, manifesting she disappears forever and we get a lot of good Chris and Eddie scenes and them having some deep and meaningful conversations about Chris growing up and understanding what happened when his mom left and navigating all that in addition to letting Chris and Denny hang out and Eddie spending more time outside the firehouse with his firefam friends and then he can act as cheesy and giddy as he wants when Buck pulls his head out of the hat he's made of his ass.

god i just remembered the Big Win For Zhalfir in the march of the machine story was that the entire country literally got shunted to its own separate plane, somehow the only worse and more isolating state it could be in than "only semi-existent". and everyone was super stoked about it
