Welcome back to post holiday development! Not an outstanding amount of work got done over Christmas/New years/even my birthday, but there's been plenty updates since those ended. It's build/testing time so lets kick it off with a topic I'm excited/dreading about. Maybe someone has some input... The power situation is under the cut!

The power situation sucks. You'd think it'd be easy to plug in some little drone fans into a wall outlet and call it a day. WRONG. These fucking things might only take 14.8v, but they eat 56 amps. That's 830 gluttonous watts each, or the same amount as a small microwave! And have you ever TRIED turning on any other appliances while the microwave is running? It pops a breaker then you got to make the walk of shame to the breaker box because your dumbass wanted to make coffee with your 3 day old reheated pizza.

And we need 2 of those... A typical outlet would have 120v, 15amps at the low end and 20amps if you're lucky, so we got to spec for 15. That means we got 120x15=1800 watts to work with. 2 fans at max load is 1660. + any other electronics we have like electromagnets, circuit boards, and motors.

This shit sucks.

It's so close to working and there is such a small margin for error. Every gram and watt counts.

So lets pretend to be engineers and solve the problem of, so how do we power it?

The first plan was a 12v psu per fan. We were lucky to have found a unicorn psu that does 12v @ 66amps. That was literally the best we could do for off the shelf stuff. We're finally in the market to change that out of fear 66amps isn't enough head room for the 56amp fans. And if we can get something closer to the 14.8v that'd be even better.

Our options now are to make a power supply our selves, which can give us the exact 14.8v, OR we had the genius idea of a pc power supply! Kinda sneaky if you ask me. Because as it turns out something like a pc power supply first turns the 120v into 12v, then further splits that up into 3.3, 5, and -12v. Which means if you get a 1000W psu, up stream on the 12v rail is rated for that 1000W! That's 83amps bb. Do we really expect to pull 83amps on each fan? Ofc not. But the higher amp rating is what we're after to not have a failure.

My dad (another trust worthy source) isn't confident a pc psu will be suitable, because to pull high amperage from the 12v, you might need to pull high amperage from the 5v to comfort the psu and let it know it's OK to output 56amps through the 12 v. Which means pulling even more than 56amps, and not having the breaker room to support it. BUT with a little hacking, I think we can persuade the psu to do it. (Many people suggest not opening pc psu's.... but I'm quite confident in my hacking skills, sooooooo >_>). I've done something similar before. Maybe that's good enough to do it again? (Everything is easy, in theory)

My previous use case for a hacked psu was this gem, where I cut the extra wires, tied the green one to ground(? (don't trust me on that, it's been a long time)), and used 1 of each of the other rails for a workbench psu.

Thought this was gonna be a post about how fucked up it is that in some places omegas don't get heat leave and was about to chime in with some stories from my work. And then I read the rest of this post and went "ah."
