“After I wrote Why it's time for a new social networking platform and how to make it successful, I was contacted on Twitter by an account I'd never heard of. The account was Minds, and they invited me to give its social networking platform a try.

Minds was launched five years ago by Bill Ottman; since then, the site has continued on in the shadow of the Facebook juggernaut. With a nod to irony, a large portion of Facebook users complain about the service on a daily basis--some even go so far as to say they'd leave Facebook if only an alternative existed. It seems that alternative does exist.

Case in point: Minds is surprisingly similar to Facebook in layout and features, though Minds isn't a simple clone of Facebook. Minds offers much of what I detailed in my previous article about a new social networking platform.

It's open source and transparent.

It offers free and paid accounts.

Its ownership and management enforce no political or social bias.

User data is not monetized.

It offers all the features users are accustomed to.

It minimizes hate speech without infringing upon free speech.

Minds uses cryptocurrency that users can earn and spend. The earned tokens can be used to boost posts, and a paid user account costs five tokens per month. The paid account earns users features like:

Access to exclusive content;

The ability to become verified; and

The ability to banish all the boosted posts from their feed.

Users earn tokens by:

Posting;

Commenting;

Receiving upvotes (similar to Likes on Facebook); and

Inviting others to join the platform (referral link).

So my curiosity was piqued. I created an account and began to poke around. After a few days, I drew the conclusion that Minds could very well be that social networking platform we've all been waiting for. To that end, I reached out to the CEO of Minds, Bill Ottman, to ask the questions that were on my mind about the site.

Jack Wallen: What made you start Minds?

Bill Ottman: I have always considered it an absolute necessity and historical inevitability that a free and open source social network rises up to become competitive with the proprietary tech titans. The top global communication platforms of humanity need to respect the freedom and voice of the community; otherwise, we end up where we are with a status-quo of surveillance, algorithmic manipulation, and exploitation. We knew we could not possibly be a sustainable network without building an independent social engine from the ground up, totally non-reliant on big tech APIs.

Jack Wallen: What is it that the likes of Facebook and Twitter are doing wrong?

Continuously audit configs and get alerted if a device is out of compliance. Be able to remediate vulnerabilities through bulk config deployment. Help prevent unauthorized network changes through change delegation, monitoring, and alerting.

Bill Ottman: There's minimal transparency with regards to both governance and software. Proprietary software should not be acceptable from our top networks, as it is impossible to audit. Their content policies are essentially indecipherable, inconsistent, and subjective. They prevent you from reaching your audience with hidden default algorithms. We are not anti-algo, but believe users should decide if they want to use them or not. They pretend to care about your privacy, offering a number of visibility controls, but ignore the ability to be invisible from them.

Jack Wallen: What is it that Facebook and Twitter are doing right?

Bill Ottman: The UX and design is excellent. Clearly they have brilliant developers and product designers who are able to build out robust features from live streaming to messaging services all interoperating cross-platform. They have vast resources to make acquisitions and deeply understand the functionality that people want. Unfortunately, the foundation of everything is upside down.

Jack Wallen: Explain, to the uninitiated, what sets Minds apart from other social platforms?

Bill Ottman:

We try to push the boundaries with radical transparency with open source code and even financials.

We are community-owned from an early stage with over 1,500 users who actually own stock.

We have implemented revenue-sharing and monetization tools to help people earn money, both fiat currency and crypto.

We believe that you should be rewarded for your contributions to the network and the engagement that you drive.

We don't require any personal information and encrypt any given.

We want to minimize hate speech with free speech, not censorship. In fact, we launched a whole initiative about this at https://change.minds.com. Research shows censorship may in fact cause greater polarization and radicalization than facilitation of legal civil discourse.

Jack Wallen: What made you opt to go the crypto route?

Bill Ottman: Prior to moving to Ethereum, we had a centralized virtual currency called points. This was one of our most popular features, as 1 point=1 view and could be used to Boost posts for greater reach, which people were losing on Facebook at alarming rates. You earned points for many types of engagement. Once Ethereum emerged we saw every reason to migrate the wholereward system to it, as this allows the token economy to become decentralized where users can hold their tokens in their own wallets and transact on-chain, which provides greater transparency as well.

Now, users can accept fiat (via stripe), Bitcoin, Ether, and Minds tokens which are ERC-20. The crypto community typically adheres to values aligned with internet freedom. You can't and shouldn't run everything on a blockchain , but we are committed to the P2P route everywhere that makes sense and isn't an impossible UX. Providing people with options and control is paramount. Do I want to publish this post to an immutable distributed system or not? That's a choice we want to provide rather than forcing a particular path.

Jack Wallen: How will Minds deal with some of the issues that have faced other platforms such as hate speech and groups that espouse such speech?

Bill Ottman: We launched the Change Minds initiative with our advisor Daryl Davis, who famously deradicalized over 200 members of the KKK through open discourse, basically, befriending them. This human approach, based in free expression and civil dialogue, is much more aligned with our values and peer-reviewed research than blanket ban policies. The goal is to provide a breeding ground for changing minds via civil discourse as Daryl has proven can work, even if it takes years. We also built a jury system for the appeals process to bring the community into the moderation structure. Our approach is long-term and synced with the First Amendment. We care a lot about building tools for people to not see anything they don't want to see as well as reporting truly harmful content. We think policies involving censorship should be data driven. What actually works?...”

Nagata-san and Kondou-san, it’s been about year since we’ve seen you appear in this series since “Start of the Giant.”

Takato: One year huh... Ever since we first appeared back in December of 2016 with “Karasuno, Revival!” we’ve done an Engeki Haikyuu every six months afterward, and at that pace I sort of worried if I might get a little tired of it, but I’ve been able to add to my experience with other plays in the past year, and now I really want to bring “The Tokyo Battle” to life.  

Shouri: Karasuno High won’t be appearing in “The Tokyo Battle,” but together with everyone in Fukurodani and Nohebi, we’re going to get everyone even more excited about the amazing production that is Engeki Haikyuu!

When you’re doing photoshoots for the play visuals, do you get back the feeling of Kuroo instantly once you put on the hair and the makeup and the uniform?

Shouri: In one sense, but even more because we move around a lot during those shoots, and when I start to feel sore after we’re done, then I feel like, “Ah, this is Haikyuu!” (laughs)

Takato: Once rehearsals start, you basically live with a little bit of muscle soreness all the time.  Every single time we do this, the day after the first day of rehearsals, I’m sore all over and it’s hard to even walk.

Shouri: I move around a lot in other shows too, and I go to the gym regularly, but even so Engeki Haikyuu rehearsals are seriously tough! The stage is slanted, and just from that alone you end up using muscles you don’t normally use just to brace yourself on certain parts of the stage.  

Takato: That’s how we train our “Haikyuu muscles.” (laughs)

Speaking of those “Haikyuu muscles,” which specific muscles would those be?

Shouri: Mostly your lower half.  Your thighs and calves get especially rock-hard.  The road back to rehearsals is a lot of, “Yeah yeah, that! That pain,” but that is part of the Engeki Haikyuu experience, and I’m going to enjoy it all over.  

This time we’ll see Fukurodani Academy and Nohebi Academy as they compete for a spot for the Spring High national tournament.  What are your impressions of your opponents?  

Takato: When it comes to Fukurodani’s Bokuto Koutarou and Akaashi Keiji, this will actually be our third time appearing together with them, but this will be Nohebi Academy’s first appearance... so I wonder?  But you can tell just by looking at the school names that our secondary theme is “Battle of the Animals,” and the thing to look for will be to see how the fight will go when it’s cats versus owls or when it’s cats versus snakes.  

As a fan, I’m very much looking forward to see how Engeki will portray the various highlight scenes from the manga.  Do you personally have any parts where you think, “It’d be great if we could have that scene from the manga,” or “I’d love to make this my highlight scene?”  

Shouri: For me, it’s the combination plays between Kuroo Tetsurou and Kozume Kenma.  When I read the manga, I immediately thought, “That was amazing!” for certain parts and I definitely want to recreate some of those on-stage.  

Takato: In the manga, this is the part where we get a lot of great expressions from Kenma.  For example, after Haiba Lev joins in, the usually poker-faced Kenma starts to make a lot of snide comments. (laughs)  But that side of Kenma is cute too, and I always want to play him while keeping that in mind.  And then of course, Nekoma will be the main school this time, so we’ll be situated right in the center of everything, so our level of responsibility has changed. We’re going to lead the company with confidence and make a magnificent play.  

Shouri: For Nekoma, I’m looking forward to seeing the first-years develop.  I’m looking forward to Ishikura Noah’s Haiba Lev and Kimura Fuuta’s Shibayama Yuuki, and the new female cast members!

Since this will be an episode without Karasuno who have been the main characters thus far, and adding in the new cast members as well, this production as a whole is going to have a different atmosphere and color and style, isn’t it?

Takato: If we don’t change to something new and good, then everything we’ve built up so far will go to waste.  I think it’s going to be extremely difficult, but we’re continuing the will of the Engeki Haikyuu that we’ve built up together with Suga Kenta and everyone else in the first generation of Karasuno who led the way, and from now on, we have to be the ones to lead the way... I firmly believe that.

Shouri: Let’s help each other!  We’ll help each other, support each other, boost each other... because that’s our specialty on Nekoma.  

Takato: Yeah.  I can say with confidence that we won’t lose to any other school when it comes to our teamwork.  We’ll display that great teamwork of ours front and center, and hope to create a new Engeki Haikyuu with everyone in the cast. 

And now I’d like to look back on previous tours.  I’d like to ask you about your memories of the Karasuno cast who graduated at the end of last year.

Takato:  We spent about two years with them starting with “Karasuno, Revival!” and in a certain sense, we have an inseparable relationship.  Even if we’re a different school, we’ve been Karasuno members ourselves in some ways...

Shouri:  It does feel like even the Karasuno cast think of us as part of them.  “Karasuno and then some.”  During the Miyagi portion of the “Start of the Giant” tour, me and Takato, Kenta-kun, Kosaka Ryoutarou, and Arita Kenji were talking, and then suddenly everyone from Karasuno had gathered together, and someone said something along the lines of, “This will be the last Engeki Haikyuu with these guys, and that’s sad,” and I just involuntarily started crying.  

Takato: We had a closing party of sorts in the middle of the tour, and when I hugged Kenta-kun, I just wailed.  

Shouri: At first I thought, “Come on, we haven’t even finished all our shows yet,” but then suddenly it was me and Takato and Kenta-kun all hugging and wailing together. (strained laugh)  Seeing us like that, everyone laughed and said, “You guys, we’re not even done yet, why are you crying?!” but we were really sad about Karasuno’s graduation.  

Takato: But it doesn’t mean that our relationship ends just because they graduated, and I definitely want to act together with them in some other production.  Probably they’ll come hang out during rehearsals of “The Tokyo Battle”?

Shouri: Kenta-kun said, “I’m going to keep watching over Engeki Haikyuu from the audience, and I’m going to stay over in the dressing rooms too!” (laughs)

Takato: In exchange for us just turning over a dressing room for Kenta-kun’s use, he can treat us to bentos!

Shouri: Let’s LINE him and say, “Treat us to some bentos ♡”.  (laughs)

As rehearsals formally begin for “The Tokyo Battle,” is there anything you’re especially looking forward to?

Shouri: There’s a lot I’m looking forward to, but the most important thing is that we stay careful and focused so that we don’t get injured!  I really think we have to be careful about injuries, and in the worst case that someone does get injured, that the damage will be minimal.  So I’ve been thinking that I need to do some training on my own starting now.  

Obviously this is true of cast injuries, but when I heard that even the director Worry Kinoshita-san isn’t free from injury, I was surprised. (laughs)

Takato: Ah, that makes it seem like it’s our fault but it’s not! (laughs)  Worry-san will watch us at rehearsals and then on his own just go, “No, not like that! That part’s more... -jerks his ankle- Owww!” and then he twisted his ankle, but we didn’t do anything.  

Shouri: Worry-san gets the most excited when he’s with our group.  When the music gets going, he’ll dance his “Worry☆Dance,” and then when he gets too excited from that, he ends up hurting himself. (strained laugh)

Engeki Haikyuu obviously has dancing, lifts, and acrobatics, and I’m always surprised with the various ways in which you use your bodies to express everything.

Takato: It’s the appeal of Engeki Haikyuu: it surpasses the general concept of a stage play and greedily takes in and incorporates all sorts of challenging things.  We attack our limits and then the breadth of what we can show gets steadily more expansive. It’s fun for us, and I think it’s really cool.  

Be honest, have you ever once had a moment where you said, “This is impossible!”

Takato: Even if I think it’s impossible, when I try it out I can be surprisingly capable.  In “Start of the Giant,” there’s a part where Shouri and I do a one-handed backflip followed immediately by a dolphin and then from there we do a scorpion to get up... Trying to explain it is... It’s easier to understand if you just watch the DVD (strained laugh), but even that seemingly impossible sequence of techniques is doable once you try it.  In “Summer of Evolution,” when Shouri and I were using pro-wrestling moves like Luchadors, I got that down in one blow.  

That was when you wrapped your legs around his neck and then flipped around, right?

Takato: Yes, exactly.  That’s a contact move, so it’s really important to have a lot of trust in each other.

Shouri: If we don’t match our timing, he’d go flying so it’s a pretty scary technique, but we just went, “Something like this?” and tried it, and we did it.  

Takato: At Engeki Haikyuu, we have brainstorming sessions and there people suggest things going, “I want to try this kind of thing,” and then we decide what we’ll use.  During “Start of the Giant,” I wanted to throw in hints to a line from the manga about “a controlled fist-fight” and suggested, “For the Nekoma and Fukurodani match scenes, what if we have us appear on-stage in those hooded robes like boxers wear and make it look like a boxing match?” and people went, “That’s great!” and we went with that.  

Shouri: And this time I think we’ll be using a lot of moves that mimic animals according to our school names, so please look forward to how that’ll look.  

“The Tokyo Battle” opens on April 5th starting in Osaka, then moving to Miyagi, then Tokyo for a one-month long tour. Please give us a message to everyone who’s looking forward to seeing this play.

You stood instinctively as Jaebum did, his steps slow in approaching you. He took your hands carefully as his mouth formed the smallest of smiles. “Me?” 

“You,” you whispered. He smiled gently and squeezed your hands, his eyes disappearing with a smile rapidly growing in size. 

“JB, how do you feel!” the host exclaimed. 

“Shocked!” Jaebum answered honestly. “All of the men on this show are so deserving. To know I was selected first is very humbling.”

“Before we continue any further,” the host sighed, looking down at her card. “Should we maybe...reveal another name?”

You let out something similar to a scoff, not being able to stop yourself from making the noise. Several of the men laughed gently at your emotion. 

To be honest, you weren’t sure if you could handle announcing a second winner so quickly. With just one date decided, you could use a glass of wine to make it through another. 

“Alright then!” the host smiled mischievously, reacting to the crowd going wild around her. “If you all insist...”

Omg! How come Kimura stopped playing Kageyama? that's so sad T_T

Actors move on to other projects for various reasons; usually it’s more beneficial to their careers to do so.  Tatsunari has a leading role in the live action Yowamushi Pedal drama series, and I believe he’ll star in a Broadway play in the coming winter, and these are both very exciting opportunities for him.  

He’s said his official good-bye to the production along with Hashimoto Shouhei (who will not return to reprise his role as Noya), and I’ve provided a translation of those messages in this post:

As a rule, I ask that people be supportive of the actors.  Whether it’s supporting Tatsunari as he moves on to other projects or being supportive of his replacement actor, who feels the pressure more than anyone to do a good job and live up to the person who came before him.  Tatsunari was an amazing, wonderful Kageyama, and he contributed so much to bringing that character to life.  But I think Kage-chan will do a great job as well otherwise he would not have been cast, and I am sure he’ll bring something new to the table in his interpretation of the character that we’ll be able to appreciate.

It’s important to keep an open mind as actors for stage productions rotate regularly in any show that runs for a long time.  For example, Broadway shows regularly use understudies, and just because Idina Menzel isn’t Elphaba anymore doesn’t mean that Wicked isn’t still an amazing show to see live.

Oh Yus....

So lately I’ve been trying to..... ya know..... Do the work.... rather than sit around talking about how I will be doing work... but also splitting time with relaxation and catching up with an old pal.... The friend I had mentioned previously is a rig truck driver... So most the time he’s on the road for a few or several months at a time. It’s nicer when he’s home.... heh....  we’re gaming nerd buddies... we’ve been playing video games online together for.... Well.... 15 years now... which is kind of fucking insane when you stop and realize it. However it’s cool indeed... we’ve become close pals since over the years you start to talk more personally rather than about the game. So still hanging with him digitally while he’s home. We can when he’s on the road but... schedule timing and/or rough mobile internet connections can sometimes make that difficult.  I have been writing lyrics lately however, so I am somewhat back to work. Just not full throttle with that shit yet.  My mini hiatus was needed though, all the work and then holiday rush took it out of me... and made my soul tired. Needed my introvert time to recharge.  Need to get in touch with various peoples hopefully they don’t feel I was ghosting them.  The reality is the classic phrase.... “it’s not you it’s me.”  cuz I really do vanish for a while... and need that isolation to think in quiet solitude.   Or it’s just not the same....   Almost done with the things I need to get back to full time work. The remixes are still first on the list.... After that.... frankly... the music is almost complete.  After listening through everything... most tracks only need minor adjustment to aspects...like compression and side chaining in a few cases.  It’s all reached the point of being very balanced.  There’s some tracks I want to add more to... but the nice part is that doing so will be very easy. Shouldn’t take long at all... so the final stage of production is almost here. Just need to get them there lyrics and vocals complete to add to the track, and then it’s time for the final mix and mastering.  After that it’s more or less working on artwork etc to go along with it all.  Then I can move on to writing new songs.  with new equipment and new software. I will be quite happy because I’ve been excited to use them.... But haven’t allowed myself to until the current project was finished.  SO I AM FUCKING DYING TO PLAY WITH THIS SHIT...... This is the first Bad Girl to show up when a woman initiatives to have a practical creative life, and the first one I see when a woman wanders in the door of my studio to show up at a painting class. I hear over and over again from these women how much they have misplaced by themselves in taking care of every person else. How tired they are of putting everyone else’s needs first and that they have come to this class because they want to do one thing that has no visual reward to anyone else.

For a woman to be creative she needs to be willing to take time just for herself. She needs uninterrupted classes when she is able to enter her studio, sit down at her pc or her easel, and see what wants to come. She needs to let herself get dreamy, do nothing, stare out the window, and be apparently unproductive. All through these interludes in which she drops into a creative trance she is inviting the muse to enter her and inviting the often magic formula and mysterious motion of her soul to express alone.

In these moments, she starts to face herself through her art. She is able to get tranquil ample so that she can listen deeply and start to inquire some essential concerns this kind of as “What do I think? What do I like? What do I really want? What ever the ideal, the energy put into attaining it is relentless. When I watch a woman paint I am always stunned by the passion she has for endlessly fussing over and repairing her paintings. Spontaneity is out of the question. She just takes it for granted that her painting must be well notion out, prepared, and arranged , and under as much of her control as is humanly possible. She is used to not trusting in her own innate beauty, and expects that the quest for beauty will require nonquit work. She never questions the ceaseless dieting and exercise, the several hours invested purchasing for just the appropriate outfit and the stressing over her pores and skin, her hair, her nails. She always has and always will are unsuccessful of the beauty mark and just assumes that beauty is something she will constantly struggle for and rarely, if ever, gain.

The really unfortunate thing is that she sees nothing improper with this fretful and nervous approach to her self and to her ar2rk.This ceaseless and ultimately hopeless striving for the extremely hard ideal is just the norm. It’s really the only thing she has ever known.

These slender constraints of beauty that a woman finds herself tangled in are always some variation on the Good Girl creed. These socially recognized specifications are primarily based on a definition of beauty that is associated to being nice and non threatening, to not standing out too much and conforming to an set norm that is pleasant but not effective. Beauty is related to compliance and convention, to subsequent the rules and to fitting in. The Good Girl beauty ideal means that it’s not OK to just be herself, warts and all. She needs to clean herself up and make herself acceptable.

When a woman is painting, the Unsightly Girl often sneaks in as a mistake or imperfection, a smear or a smudge, something messy or uncontrolled.When the woman attempts to clean up the mess, she finds with increasing horror that the clutter only carries on to grow. She is constantly having specialized calamities. The paint drips or operates, she are not able to control her brush, chaos reigns, and it seems like there is nothing she can do to make it stop.

She is desperate to regain to pretty. In jeopardizing spontaneity, she has located, to her horror, that she has created something that appears severe or loud or imperfect. Or,even even worse, something grotesque or malformed. She busyally tries painting more safe photography, more bouquets, rainbows, calm surroundings . But the flowers develop sharp edges and darkish colors and grow absolutely out of control , the rainbow colors become wildly fluorescent , and the landscapes becomes populated with darkly mysterious designs and statistics .

At this point she has stepped out of the confines of charming and attractive, and into an unidentified landscape of the wild, the untamed the unkempt and matted. This is often the start of a relationship to the inner Sensible Aged Feminine archetype, also known as the Witch. This is the face of the deep feminine that doesn’t care about appearances . After all, the Witch walks around with missing teeth and warts, and clearly doesn’t care what other individuals think. This is an awakening of the factor of a woman’s soul who is no lengthier a slave to approval and who has started to walk down the long road away from woman as product and commodity.

THE FAT GIRL: Willing to be big, be visible, to come out of hiding, to be a woman and not a little lady, to take in space, to be hungry, to say what she wants, to know what she wants, to be full of herself, to be too big for her britches, to be a full grownup, unafraid to say yes! A fat girl isn’t really afraid to take up space and to take her place in the world.

In my studio I offer high top quality paper that is of ample size, but pupils can tape the sheets together to make even larger paintings. It’s a heady time when a woman can let herself distribute out and take up some real space,when she can make a HUGE painting, one that can occasionally cover an entire wall.

Making a huge painting is a dizzying and terrifying prospect, and a woman often needs heaps of encouragement and authorization to take this step. Actually I usually need to nudge her a little. She will start with stating something about MAYBE desiring to go a little larger with her work. She feels something pushing on her, seeking to come through, and so she will ask if it’s OK to use two items of paper alternatively of one. I generously offer to get the paper for her but come back with four pieces of paper, instead of the requested for two. Irrespective how “nice” she is, at this point she is more than willing to make a fuss, to strenuously object about how it’s too much, she could never fill up that much paper, she doesn’t have enough to express, she could not possibly take up that much area in the studio.

But as I continue to calmly pin the four pieces to the easel, nodding supportively, yet disregarding her progressively frantic protestations, I see the gleam in her eye. She wants this possibility to take up space, to proclaim herself in residing color, to be unmistakably considered, but is qualified to not give voice to this desire. I watch her as she struggles with the forbidden excitement of the obstacle, the possibility, the sheer daring of it. The door to a secret longing is creaking open up on long unused and rusted hinges, opening to her hunger to be big, to be bold, to be outrageous, to be visible as completely and completely herself.

THE BITCHY GIRL: Willing to be intense and powerful; unafraid of her own anger, unafraid to discuss up, to take a stand, to have limits and boundaries, unafraid to say NO! Unafraid to battle abuse, refuses to be treated terribly, willing to break connections and walk away from poisonous relationships if it means protective your own wild and valuable self.

An additional major crossroads takes place in the painting process when a woman realizes how offended and enraged she feels and she lets herself express it on paper for everyone to see. However, the feeling of anger is so taboo and so threatening that it’ll usually sneak in the back door as just a little color. Some red or black appears on the internet page and then little by little or by “incident” grows larger than the woman had intended .

As this continues , the artist begins to feel a little uncomfortable. She will stand back from her now unruly painting with a wondered frown and turn to me , saying something like ” That seems awfully angry,” adopted briefly by, “You know, I’m not really angry. I don’t get angry. A little depressed possibly, but never angry.” This is a very precarious moment in the process. I have had women truthfully walk out of the room to get away from this intimation of anger, wear their coat and announce that they really must leave now. I am typically able to coax her back to the painting for the rest of the class, but once she leaves I’ll often never see her again. The real truth of her own angry feelings is just too frightening, the prohibitions too strong, and all I can do at this point is hope for her that sometime she will be able to feel safe enough to take that deep plunge into her own passionate and furious heart .

For the woman who is geared up to take that terrifying yet interesting dive, admitting that she is indeed angry can allow an incredible depth of feeling to come flooding out. All the yrs of saying yes, yes, yes when she needed to say no, no, NO to unreasonable needs, to abuse, to putting her own needs on a perpetual back burner, come out on the paper in a frenzy of paint , of color, and of image.

For one woman it comes out as a brilliant red background, with black words painted effortlessly and starkly to read “I AM SO PISSED OFF!'”. For another , it is a large image of a woman with wildly traveling red hair, bellowing open mouthed and brazen ” What the $#%@ about me!!!”

A sixty year old woman, who has been married to a Methodist preacher for forty several years, surprises herself by painting a warrior goddess in very hot trousers, with a Colt forty five in one hand and a cake spatula (to be used as a whacking weapon when necessary) in the other.

The paintings sometimes represent images that are recognizable out of fantasy, including a snake haired Medusa, and sometimes are expressed as a whirl of color and chaos, populated by weird, otherworldly creatures putting on very large, VERY sharp teeth. But what they all have in common is that they bounce off the page with the ferocity of emotion portrayed. There’s no mistaking the intent powering these paintings which is some version of ” I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any longer!”

I RECENTLY READ an article in a promoting journal that was caution advertisers away from utilizing the words power or powerful in ads directed in direction of women. The creator of this article wasn’t asking yourself the issue of women’s fret around power, just stating an obvious ( to him) fact that women will not likely buy products that are associated with the language of power.

We’ve a long historical past as women around being disempowered and victimized, and we have internalized this fear of power, of our own power, for way too long. We are living in times of great exchange and uncertainty and it is critical that we reclaim our birthright of power, authority and creative vision to take advantage of the opportunity that we have to recreate the world as a place where our most treasured values can endure.

There are many ways to face and to treatment this power wound, and impending it through our creativity is just one of them. But it’s a good place to start. As my women student’s and I have realized over many years, it’s fairly possible to experience courage, transformation and self love by wielding the firm end of a paintbrush. And breaking our long allegiance to the Good Girl and making it possible for the Bad Girl an commemorated place in our lives is not only therapeutic, but makes life a lot more fascinating and fun!

AI will also completely change how marketers interact with customers. When Jane goes online to search for products, she’ll engage with a fully cognitive website. Diabetes Moves Down the List of Priorities for Big Pharma

While Sanofi and other Big Pharma companies rush toward cutting-edge therapies that unleash the immune system to fight cancer or potentially cure DNA flaws, diabetes is moving down the list of priorities.

Sanofi is joining rivals such as GlaxoSmithKline Plc that have shaken up their approach to finding new blockbusters, moving swiftly into the lucrative oncology field and culling less promising programs. The French drugmaker said Thursday it’s accelerating 17 programs -- almost half in cancer -- and dropping more than a dozen others under development, including two in diabetes. The company also plans to expand in gene therapies, John Reed, the new research chief, said in an interview.

Sanofi is concentrating on “places where the confidence in the targets is high, where the development pathway is crisp and lean, where regulatory authorities have accelerated routes, and where the payers remain collaborative,” said Reed, who joined the Paris-based company from Roche Holding AG last year.

The drugmaker is reshaping its research priorities as medicines for diabetes -- one of the world’s most common and serious medical conditions -- grapple with tough competition, pricing pressure and scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers. At the same time, Sanofi and other global pharmaceutical companies from Novartis AG to Glaxo are betting on breakthrough medicines that could have a profound impact on patients -- and profits.

Gene therapies with the potential to cure life-threatening conditions are a key area. Sanofi will build on a number of early-stage assets it has in-house, tap the manufacturing know-how in its vaccines business, and look for partnership or acquisition opportunities to expand in that field, Reed said.

Diabetes Challenge

“We see an opportunity to broaden our commitment to that space, and we’ve made decisions internally about putting more resources into it,” he said. “We’re looking at doing part of that organically and part through collaboration.”

Among the experimental medicines being prioritized at the company are treatments for leukemia, multiple myeloma, breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease and hemophilia. Halted projects include some treatments for obesity, heart disease, and the most common form of diabetes.

Sanofi will advance in diabetes and heart disease, though it plans to be “more focused and selective,” Reed said. The canceled projects highlight the challenge in finding compelling new drugs in those areas and the investment of time and money needed to prove that they work, he said.

Diabetes, which powered Sanofi’s growth for years, continues to be a sore spot amid declining sales of Lantus, its aging bestseller. Chief Executive Officer Olivier Brandicourt is among pharma bosses heading to Washington later this month to testify on drug prices amid concerns about patients’ insulin costs. The halt to diabetes projects raises questions about the company’s commitment to the area, Jean-Jacques Le Fur, an analyst with Bryan Garnier, said in a note to clients.

Even the world’s biggest maker of diabetes drugs, Novo Nordisk A/S, has moved into new territories like obesity and liver disease while speeding efforts to develop stem-cell therapies for a range of diseases, including Parkinson’s. While the Danish company continues rolling out diabetes products, finding game changers has become tougher.

Sanofi’s moves to revamp R&D follow similar steps at Glaxo, which pulled back from cancer therapies years ago before opting to return. In September, Sanofi and partner Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. won U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for an immune-oncology drug -- Sanofi’s first -- for a deadly form of skin cancer. The treatment is now an anchor to build on and combine with others, Reed said.

Missed Wave

Still, Sanofi has acknowledged that it missed out on the recent wave of revolutionary new medicines for cancer, falling behind competitors such as Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., Roche and AstraZeneca Plc in the booming class of drugs that unleash the immune system against tumors.

But many patients with colorectal, breast, prostate and other types of cancer don’t respond to those breakthrough drugs, and “there’s a huge frontier still of unmet opportunity,” Reed said.

Sanofi expects to maintain an annual research and development budget of about 6 billion euros ($6.8 billion) through 2021, making use of AI and tech to keep costs down. Among the projects dropped were experimental treatments for Alzheimer’s and peanut allergy, while Sanofi will also keep its commitment to vaccines.

The Puerto Rican powerhouse returns for new season of Netflix One Day At a Time reboot

Back in 1990, Rita Moreno went to see famed television producer Norman Lear to discuss her possibly playing the part of then 67-year-old character actor Charles Durning’s wife in a pilot Lear was producing. According to her 2013 autobiography, Rita Moreno: A Memoir, his response was, “Durning’s wife? Are you kidding? You look like a kid!” She insisted she was 60, and he responded by saying with a twinkle, “Getoutta here!” According to her bio, Moreno went to her car and cried—“I looked too good for my age….” Fast forward to 2019, and the Hispanic icon is getting ready to start the third season of the Netflix reboot of One Day At a Time, created and still produced by none other than Lear. It’s a development that the ageless actress couldn’t be more delighted by.

“Some things come very hard and some things come very easy. Norman Lear said that he wanted me in his new show, and I said okay. About 10 minutes later, I asked him what it was about. But it’s Norman Lear. He told me that I was the very first person that he thought of for the show. He’s a marvel who is at work every day, by the way. He’s an old fart. I tell him that I’m the old fartette,” she said. “I’m working with one of the great producer/writers of television—Norman Lear. We’ve become very close. I just really adore that man. There’s so much to love about him.”

While Moreno never saw the original series and has no plans to, she’s delighted by the quality of the material and the actors whom she’s getting to work with.

“It’s a terrific cast. Justina [Machado] is just brilliant. I adore and respect her. I think she’s just a terrific actress and really underappreciated. I’m just thrilled to be working with her, and the kids are growing and just getting better and better. And my good friend Todd [Grinnell], who plays Schneider, is someone whom I adore with all my heart. We’re all very close, and I’m sure that people always say this, but it’s like a family,” she said. “What is extraordinary about our show is that Norman really addresses some very serious stuff and that’s him through and through. The writers have found a balance between the funny and the serious, which is not an easy balance to come to.”

In a career that’s found the Puerto Rican native compiling quite a résumé in film, television and on the stage, her dance card has been filling up rather quickly. In addition to working on a documentary of her life for PBS that’s being produced by Lear and his business partner Brent Miller, the octogenarian recently found herself on the phone with Steven Spielberg, who wanted to offer her a part in his upcoming remake of West Side Story—the same film that was Moreno’s breakthrough role and landed her a 1961 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She’s still in disbelief in sharing this particular anecdote.

“When I sat on the phone and talked with him…the him….Steven, I could not believe what he said,” she shared. “He told me they were going to do this movie and I said I’d heard about it. Then he said, ‘Tony Kushner and I would just love to have you play Doc, only it’s not Doc, it would be Valentina. She owns the candy store.’ I damn near wet my knickers. I was just beside myself. Talk about full circle.”

It’s a long road traveled for the woman born Rosa Dolores Alverio in Humacao to a 17-year-old seamstress, Rosa Maria Marcano, and a farmer, Francisco José Alverio. Having come over with her mom when she was only five, she grew up in the Bronx and Washington Heights, taking dance lessons with Rita Hayworth’s paternal uncle Paco Cansino and making her Broadway debut at age 12 in a production called Skydrift. During her teen years, Moreno’s mother and stepfather moved out to Valley Stream before Hollywood beckoned. It was a time she remembers fondly.

“I loved [living in Valley Stream], because it seemed to connect me with the white world. And actually, the house we lived on was a tract house. I didn’t see it that way, and I didn’t even know what that word meant. We were the last house on the street, and we literally lived next to a beet field. Heaven knows, I’m sure it’s different now. All I could think of was, why does it have to be beets? Why couldn’t it be something I like?,” she recalled with a laugh.

Moreno landed parts in 1950’s The Toast of New Orleans and 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain. Being a Latina, she was cast to play many “exotic” characters, and aside from a supporting role as Tuptim in 1956’s The King & I, she disliked many of the parts she wound up playing throughout most of the 1950s.

“There was nothing when I came out to Hollywood. I did go there under contract to MGM, and it was a hard time. I already didn’t feel so good about myself anyway because of my experiences in New York,” she said. “Whenever I wasn’t working, I’d be so sad and panicked. And then when I was working, I’d be thrilled for one day and then I’d look at the script. It would be an American Indian girl or some Lolita/Conchita part and then I would get sad again. It was just really difficult. All of that sent me into therapy years later. That’s the best thing I ever did for myself.”

While West Side Story proved to be a breakthrough for Moreno, the quest for non-stereotypical work was continual, even as she married cardiologist Leonard Gordon in 1965 (who passed away in 2010) and became a mom to her only child Fernanda. Along the way, she became a KEGOT—someone who’s been awarded a Kennedy Center Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony—while appearing in shows as wide-ranging as The Electric Company and the uber-violent HBO prison drama Oz. With so many projects that she’s involved with, the proud grandmother is grateful to have such a full creative schedule.

“I was 87 in December, and I’m a working actress. I have no complaints. I get a hangnail, I’m not complaining because life is way too good.”

The third season of the reboot of One Day At a Time debuts on Netflix on Feb. 8.
