The West Indian manatee or "sea cow" is a manatee, and the largest surviving member of the aquatic mammal order Sirenia. This beautiful gentile giant is a wonderful conservation story of how we can protect what we love. I highly recommend everyone to see this amazing creature as it truly is friendly and a lufe changing experience! The West Indian manatee is still protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978 and the US Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. @jim_abernethy #manatee #westindianmanatee #crystalriver #threesisters #jimabernethysscubaadventures (at Three Sisters Springs)

November marks #ManateeAwarenessMonth! West Indian Manatees (Trichechus manatus) live in shallow coastal areas where they feast on aquatic plants. Known by the nickname "sea cows", they can graze for more than 5 hours a day. This photograph comes from ECOfronteras, Vol. 11, No. 30 (April 2007), a research magazine published by El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (@ecosurmx), a public research center attached to the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) of #Mexico. ECOSUR has contributed volumes from 2006 to 2017 of ECOfronteras to #BiodiversityHeritageLibrary as part of our ongoing mission to promote #OpenAccess! So after being skunked a couple of times in other places we made a slight detour to try to track down some manatees. According to a gentleman here, if we would have been here yesterday we would have been lucky if we saw 2 or 3. But today was a different story and we hit the jackpot! There we about 40 with some breeding pairs and plenty of young. It was one of the most incredible experiences of our trip. #manateekisses #manatee #westindianmanatee #threatenedspecies #FloridaWildlife #mermaid #seadogs (at Manatee Observation Deck)

#Repost @mission_blue with @instatoolsapp ・・・ Endangered Species Act in action! The West Indian manatee was listed as "Endangered" in 1967, meaning the species was in danger of going extinct. This listing provided protection for the manatee under the ESA, as well as focused conservation efforts to help the manatee population recover. The efforts were successful, and in 2017 the West Indian manatee's status was downgraded to "Threatened". This new status means that the manatee population is making a comeback, though they still need protection and assistance under the ESA. While the West Indian manatee has not fully recovered, their new status is another example of an ESA achievement.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo credit: David Hinkel⠀ #EndangeredSpecies #EndangeredSpeciesDay #ExtinctionIsForever #Conservation #ConservationSuccess #Manatee #WestIndianManatee #MissionBlue #NoBlueNoGreen #HopeSpots #OceanStories #OceanConservation #MarineConservation #OceanOptimism #ThinkBlue #Ocean #Sea #Shore #Blue #Beach #Conservation #OceanMinded #SylviaEarle #BlueMind

Juvenile West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) with three remoras (Echeneididae) attached. There were maybe 6 different individuals in the area. All had white patches, which I assume are from boat hits. An amazing treat to see them at all ... and these were so close I was tad worried one would bump into me. Near Icacos Island, Puerto Rico, on a beautiful day. #manatee #trichechus #westindianmanatee #antilleanmanatee #remora #echneididae #sharksucker #puertorico #icacosisland (at Icacos Island)

One More FL Discovery
3/11/2014 – I haven’t left the state yet, but one unique Florida experience has so far eluded me. I heard rumors of sightings in the Everglades. I caught a glimpse-no good pics-on the road back, and missed an opportunity in Ft Myers. I had planned a camping night in one of their alleged hangouts, but due to weather predictions skipped a night and made hotel reservations further north. Today, I stopped at Blue Spring State Park, sort of on the way to St Augustine, to see the West Indian Manatee, and my timing was right. The park has a walkway/boardwalk from the St John River to the spring “boil”. Blue Spring is a gap in the Florida aquifer that pushes millions of gallons of fresh, 72° water into the river every day. This makes the spring “run” a perfect refuge for manatees in the winter. Boating, swimming, and diving are all prohibited during the four month period the animals appear here. Strolling up the walkway, I saw fish (gar and what I was told were tilapia), anhinga and cormorant, lizards, turtles, an alligator, and luckily, about seven manatee. Hard to describe the manatee, but think about a mammal of about ten feet in length, sort of a toothless walrus crossed with a small whale with a flat beaver’s tail, and weighing from 400-1300 pounds. Like a whale, they hang out in the water and only surface occasionally to breathe. So above water pics depend on luck and good lighting. I had at least a little of both today.
Two more interesting sights on the walk were nesting fish, who had cleared spots on the surface of all debris, and turtles and an alligator hanging out on opposite ends of a downed branch
I drove through the old city of St Augustine, but was a little late so decided to tour it tomorrow. After dinner I discovered Mile Marker Brewing, just a mile away from the hotel. Good beer, taproom and great staff.
