‘The Westbury White Horse’, Anna Dillon Unknown Photographer "Wiltshire's best-known hill figure, cut into the slope of a hill beneath Bratton Camp Iron Age hillfort. Curiously, it is the only horse figure in the county to be shown standing still, rather than galloping. The horse measures 108 feet from nose to tail and stands 182 feet high. It is thought to commemorate King Alfred the Great's victory over the Danes at Ethandun (The Battle of Edington), which took place near Bratton Camp in 878AD. "

The Westbury White Horse is a striking hillside chalk figure located on Bratton Downs in Wiltshire, England. This iconic figure is one of several white horses in the region, etched into the chalk downs and visible for miles around ...
Believed to date back to the late 17th or early 18th century, it is often associated with King Alfred the Great's legendary victory over the Danes at the Battle of Ethandun in 878 AD. However, the current design is largely a restoration from 1778 by George Gee, who reshaped an older, more weathered figure. Measuring 180 feet in length and 108 feet in height, it stands as a testament to the area's rich cultural history and enduring fascination with chalk art ...
Surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Wiltshire countryside, the Westbury White Horse sits atop a steep hill offering panoramic views of the Vale of Pewsey and Salisbury Plain. The site is a popular destination for hikers, history enthusiasts, and photographers who come to admire its scale and craftsmanship ...
Nearby, the Iron Age hill fort of Bratton Camp adds an extra layer of historical intrigue, further emphasizing the area's deep historical roots. Today, the figure remains an enduring symbol of Wiltshire’s heritage, blending natural beauty with human creativity in a timeless landscape ... 🤘🏼

Arts & Design is excited to unveil a new permanent artwork by Darryl Westly at LIRR Westbury station. “Illuminations” (2023) is a dynamic, allegorical reflection of the people and places of Westbury that employs glass, metal, light, and shadow as equal counterparts, creating symbols of remembrance and an environment for transitory contemplation.
“Illuminations” was translated from original paintings by Westly that gather the past and present histories of the village and community, which have been translated into 782 square feet of painted glass by Glasmalerei Peters Studios, and 140 square feet of etched metal work fabricated by KC Fabrications. Spanning the station's ticket office to the overpass towers, the work blends divergent narratives, archival imagery, and motifs from Westbury’s past into brilliantly colorful dreamscapes.
The painted glass is interspersed with patterns inspired by Wampum Belt designs, juxtaposing Tuskegee Airmen, farm stands, and the local children’s library. Recurring floral and bouquet motifs reference the gardens of the historic Orchard Hill Estate, serving as metaphors for the ancestry of the land and the cultivation of community. In the etched metal railing, race cars and horses harken back to the old Roosevelt Raceway, boats reference the migration of Quakers to the area, and chain-links take on the dual meaning of both the history of enslavement and the bonds that now hold diverse communities together. “Illuminations” honors Westbury history while also leaving space to contemplate its future. It is a memorialization of moments in history where people can find meaning, understanding, and connection, regardless of race, creed, or class.

I'm reading Kept in Cages and I love all the local references for the Malfoys. I also know the area well and it feels like a little treat to see familiar names x
AHHHH my anonymous friend I love this ask!!! <3 <3 Was it totally self indulgent to move the Muggle Malfoys to one of my favourite West Country towns? Absolutely yes. Did I think anyone except me would appreciate the references? Not for a single second - so thank you, anon, for brightening up my week. Perhaps we'll inadvertently pass each other in Frome one day 🙌
(I have West Country references in several other fics - from Pansy's townhouse in When The Party's Over, which is on the Royal Crescent in Bath, to my little fic Westbury. I also have a WIP entirely set in the West Country. It's coming dreckly, mind, and it should be gert lush).

Chalk horses are an established tradition now - there are many of them throughout the UK. This is the Folkstone white horse, created in 2003
There's a blog here that talks about its construction.

And the Westbury White Horse, which we would drive past to visit my grandparents in the summertime. Apparently, this was made to commemorate the 878 Battle of Ethandun. I'm not sure how far this one goes back, but the current version was started in 1778. It was preserved with white concrete, rather than continue the traditional chalk upkeep, in the 1950s. source here :D
im having feelings about the uffington white horse again
