Teach Me To Love Hate You (Race x Fem Jet OC, enemies to lovers)
Here I am to request again! (*insert evil laugh*) So Race is doing so bad in school that he has to get a tutor. The problem is he gets stuck with this posh Jet girl and they absolutely hate each other. Tutoring is a mess. But one night when Race goes out to play cards against the Jets heâs playing against her, but sheâs all dressed up! Turns out sheâs a card shark, and wins by flirting with her opponent to get in their head. Her strategy works, and by the end of the night they're practically dating.
Daveyâs POV
âAnother F, Mr. Higgins.â
Our math teacher, Mr. Johnson, hands the man sitting in front of me his test. No surprise that Race failed considering he spends all his time goofing off. Iâll admit since Iâve met Jack and his gang I myself have relaxed a bit but not too much to have my perfect grades drop.
âVery impressive, Mr. Jacobs.â
Iâm handed my own test, which I passed with flying colors. The bell rings and signals for us to head home.
âGo ahead, Davey,â Race groans. âRub your perfect score in my face. I hate school!â
I gather my things and sling my bag over my shoulder. âI know book smarts arenât your thing. Um, have you maybe considered being tutored?â
Race huffs and pulls out his cigar to stick in his mouth. âNo way! Iâll keep my own perfect score of failing before I team up with one-a those bookworms-â
âWell thatâs too bad, Mr. Higgins.â Mr Johnson approaches us. âYour failing grades have led the school to force me to assign you a tutor. You are to stay after school every weekday until 5. You will continue this until your grades improve.â The teacher gestures to the door. âYour tutor is waiting for you in room 215.â
I canât believe it. Neither can Race.
âAre you serious? God, outta all thingsâŠâ
The flustered student gets up and struts out of the room, causing me to rush after him.
âMaybe it wonât be so bad? Itâs only-â
âDave, of course itâs gonna be bad! Iâll barely miss the card tournaments at 6!â We reach the end of the hall where room 215 is. âIâm gonna be locked up with some ugly stiff trying to teach the unteachable-!â
âYou must be Anthony Higgins,â a womanâs voice speaks as the classroom door opens.
Race rolls his eyes. âYeah, thatâs- Holy Jesus!â
Amandaâs POV
This is what I get? This is what I get for keeping good grades? Being forced to tutor someone? Mrs. Smith informed me this morning that Iâve been assigned to tutor someone all because Iâm one of the top students. I donât even go to Manhattan High! Iâm only here for the math class! Sadly West Side High doesnât have any higher up math classes, so I have to commute to âHattan.Â
I take a deep breath as I wait in the empty classroom. Just get through it one day at a time. The sooner you help him improve the sooner this headache will be over. The sound of approaching chatter alerts me to the door. Putting on a perky face, I walk over and open it. Outside I recognize Davey from math club, and the other must be the student Iâm supposed to meet.
âYou must be Anthony Higgins.âÂ
The man in question rolls his eyes and turns to me. âYeah, thatâs- Holy Jesus!â His jaw drops and I swear heâs having a stroke.
Davey waves a hand in front of him. âUm, Race? You ok?â
The blonde boy nods slowly, still gaping at me. I feel my patience slipping. Ugh. I am not staying after school to be ogled!
I grip the manâs shirt and drag him inside. âThanks for dropping him off, David. Iâve got my work cut out. See you tomorrow!â
âBye, Amanda!â The kind Jacobs man waves and shuts the door.
Race is still quiet. I steer him to a chair and push him down to sit. âListen up, Higgins. We both donât wanna be here. So let me make this perfectly clear: pay attention and smarten up!â
Higgins shakes himself awake and gets a lopsided grin. âWell hello, doll. Yâknow friends call me Race-â
âIâm not your friend. Iâm your tutor.â
My firm tone turns Raceâs grin to a scowl. âDonât remind me. I donât think Iâve met you. Iâdve remembered your lovely attitude.â
I stiffly take out some worksheets and slap them on the desk. âYouâve got some nerve, Higgins. Iâm from West Side High.â
He snickers. âAh, one-a Lortonâs gals. Thatâs where the attitude comes from!â
I roll my eyes. âRiffâs just a good friend. That also means that you shouldnât try anything, understand? Just do these worksheets and we can be done for today. My whole life doesnât revolve around school, and unlike you I actually have plans that donât involve goofing off.â
âWell,â Race says cockily. âSince neither of us wanna suffer through this, whaddya say you lets me go early?â
That little-! Thatâs it. No more playing nice. I stiffly walk over to the door and lock it. Itâs against school policy but I donât care at this point. This cheeky moron is not gonna pin me for some softie!
âHey! Whyâd you-?â
I steer Race back into his seat with a firm hold. âWorksheets. Now! Before I really give you something to stress over!â
Heâs shaken but still tries to keep confident. âLike what? The heartthrob youâs giveân me?â
âLike a black eye, dumbass! Now get to work!â
Raceâs POV
God must have a sense-a humor âcause that tutor session felt like it took fifty years! It donât help that my tutor is a stuck-up goody-goody. Jeez, for a moment I thought she was cute. I didnât even get her name.
âEy, Racer. Ya with us?â Jack asks.
âUm- Yeah. Just thinkân,â I mudda as we enter the Jetsâ hideout.Â
âYou? Thinking?â Albert laughs. âNever thought Iâd see the day! Whatâs got you so worked up?â
âHe has to be tutored now,â Davey explains from behind.
I roll my eyes. âGee, thanks Davey! Why not announce my failure to the whole woild, why dontcha?â
âDonât feel too bad, Race,â Crutchy tries to comfort me. âIt took me a while to understand math too.â
âWhat I donât get is how are ya so bad at math when ya count cards like a madman?â Spot grunts. âYouâs bedda not get us kicked out.â
This weekâs card tournament is beân held in the West Side. I ainât too noivous âcause Riffâs always too busy boastân âbout his new construction job to play the game. That and Baby Johnâs poker face ainât worth dirt. I can see through him like glass. So far the turn up looks pretty bland. Maybe folks is getân tired-a losing? Whereâs the competition?
âEvening gents,â Riff greets us as we gather âround the table. âWeâs just waitân on a few more players, then weâll start.â
âIs Bernardo coming?â Davey asks.
The Jet leader smirks. âWouldn't you wanna know, Mouth? Expecting Liliana to show?â
David blushes and looks away. Sure, he gets a pretty goil tonight. Of all people I expected Davey Jacobs to be the last guy to find a date.
âWhat about Mouthpiece?â I ask. âCanât a guy see his own brodda?â
Riff shakes his head. âBernardo called to say he canât make it either. Only Baby John and Amanda are left to show.â
âBesides, one Higgins is enough to handle,â Jack groans. âWe donât need the matching pair.â
Iâd hoid of Baby John before but the odda name ainât familiar. With my luck itâll be some ditzy dame who donât know a spade from a shovel-
âWell well, hello again, mister Higgins.â
Amandaâs POV
âAre you kidding me?â I gape as I peer through the window.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â Baby John asks from behind.
âRace is here, thatâs what! That ding-dong plays cards here?â
âActually he ainât no ding-dong,â Baby John points out. âRace is one-a the best players in New York.â
I snort. âIf heâs so smart, why do I gotta be forced to teach him basic algebra?â Perhaps thatâs a question no one can answer. âDonât matter. Heâll bend either way.â
âGonna lay on the shark charm?â John questions with an arched brow.
âYa bet.â I donât always play by the rules. My secret is that after school I play tournaments as a card shark by flirting with players. Some frown at it but Iâm proud of my acting skills. Plus any little money I can make goes towards helping my parents.
Baby John goes ahead and sits next to Riff at the table while I stand behind Race.Â
âWell well, hello again, mister Higgins.â
The manâs head jerks up and he spins around to look at me with surprised eyes. Itâs as if he canât decide that Iâm real. He looks between me and Riff with a stunned expression.
âAmanda, I see you know Race,â the Jet assumes.
My lips press into a firm line. âYeah. Through tutoring. Now since weâs not at school can we actually have fun and play some cards?â
The oddas just shrug and begin to assemble the deck, while Race looks at me like he just won the lottery.
âAmanda, is it? Golly, Iâve never pinned you for a card gal!â
âThereâs many things youâd be surprised by,â I say in a sultry voice. My suave charm automatically draws Race in and I see him starting to lose his senses.Â
âTh- Thatâs some getup youâve got on, sweetheart,â he mumbles.
His compliment is refreshing. Usually guys just eat my appearance right up with no thought-a beân nice. Tonightâs outfit is a polka dot cocktail dress with a sweetheart neckline paired with simple red heels. I may be a card shark but I still got my dignity.
âThank you,â I say whole-heartedly, but then regain my attitude. âI was starting to think ya couldnât use that mouth for anything odda than back-sassing. Ready to lose?â
Race stares for a second then turns back to start gathering his delt hand. I decide to sit next to him for a better shot of distracting him. If I can get the oh-so-great Racetrack Higgins to falter at cards then Iâll have really set a record. Tonightâs game is Hearts and fortunately my hand is halfway decent. Lotta high cards plus the queen-a spades. Just enough to turn the tables and give everyone 26 points.
âYouâve been taking a lotta hearts,â Race says after a while, then says in a lower tone: âWanna bet that youâd steal mine as well?â
Ha! Heâs trying to play a card shark at her own game! This is too funny.
I pull on my best flirting smile and bat my eyelashes. âYou tell me, handsome.â
That did it. Raceâs face goes beet red and he goes back to staring at his cards. A few more hands go by and I continue to keep the lead. Luckily the oddas are too consumed by conversation to notice, all except Race. But for good measure to keep him distracted I slide my leg over to brush against his. This gets him shaking and all but hot and bothered. Itâs working, but then why does a part-a me feel guilty? It ainât a question that Race is a jerk sometimes but heâs still kinda handsome- No. I have a job to do. There's no holding back.
âLast hand. Whoâs got the queen?â Davey asks as we all turn in our final card.
My smirk outshines all their oblivious faces. âI do!â
Jack chuckles. âYou lose, Amanda.â
âActuallyâŠâ I fan out all the hearts Iâve collected. âI win!â
Everyone takes a double-take and groans. Another victory!
âAlright, you know the rules,â Riff grunts. âPay up.â
The guys grudgingly take out their contribution and toss it onto the table. Maybe now I can afford to buy mom some good kitchen knives.
âGood job, Amanda.â Leave it to Crutchy to be the pro at sportsmanship. âYouâre almost better than Race!â
âHeâs right,â Spot agrees. âHear that, Higgins? Ya got competition!â
The man in question has a stern look on his face. Instead-a answering he abruptly gets up and sulks down the hall to the bathroom. Sore loser. Canât he take one defeat without holding a grudge?Â
âWeâs gonna head back,â Jack calls. âSend Race over once heâs done.â
The âHattan fellas make their way out, leaving me with Spot ând the Jets. Soon enough they too walk out and leave me alone to count up my winnings. After a few moments I hear footsteps and turn to see Race fuming with what looks like anger.
âYou got spunk, sweetheart,â he remarks slyly. âNot many dames can get into my head the way you do.â All of a sudden he struts forward and leans me back to lay against the table. âAlmost makes me wanna soak ya for that, but then thatâd be wasting that pretty face-a yours.â
How is he so strong? Also why are his eyes suddenly quite catching-? Ugh! Get a grip, Amanda! Just take the money and go.
âYouâre lucky Riff ainât here right now,â I growl. âOddawise youâd be talking through a mouth with no teeth for saying that.â
Race scoffs. âYou batted your eyes at me, sweetheart. Whatâs your angle?â
âItâs part of the game! Jeez Higgins, youâre so used to card tournaments I thought youâd already know what a card shark is!â
âSo instead of being one-a Bernardoâs sharks, youâre an actual shark?â Race dramatically clutches his chest. âThat hurts. That hurts deep, sweetheart.â
I hiss in frustration. âStop calling me that!â
âWhy? âCause every odda bum ya flirt with calls you that? Just how many guys have ya swindled to give you cash?â
In a fleeting moment of anger I slap Race across the face. âI ainât your usual lady of the night, Higgins! For your information, every cent I earn through card games goes to my folks! Unlike you I use my skills to help people instead of boasting âbout it like a spoiled brat!â
Race blanks for a second but is still angry. âBoasting? I ainât the one boasting, sweetheart. Iâll admit my skills is good but itâs Jack ând the oddas that boast âbout it!â
âThen why do you suck at math?â I jab.Â
âMaybe itâs the same reason why a clean-cut goil like you is a card shark,â Race replies. âI gots bedda things to do.â
âThat donât mean ya should throw your education in the trash!â I argue.
âI ainât as smart as you, sweetheart. I know when to admit Iâm no good.âÂ
Race suddenly gets a saddened look and Iâd be lying if I said I didnât feel bad. It ainât his fault heâs not book smart but that donât mean heâs useless.
âYou still donât get it, Higgins. Lifeâs more than just academics. But you still gotta put up with the tough stuff.â I loosen up a little and put a hand on his shoulder. âIf youâre willing to cooperate, I could still tutor ya.â
Race laughs. âHa! Thatâs a good one, sweetheart. Going soft on me?â
That son of a-! âAlright, fine! Go and fail math for all I care!â I lean forward and shove him against the wall. âTo think I actually felt sorry for you, you snarky, hot, cocky-!â
âWhoa whoa whoa!â Raceâs face lights up. âLay that on me again?â
âI was an idiot to think youâre a decent human being-! Ah!â
The blue-eyed man tilts over and plants a kiss on my lips. In my shocked state I donât know whether to pound him or kiss him back. The gesture melts away my anger in pure ecstasy. God, whatâs this guy doing to me?!
âYou think Iâm hot, sweetheart?â Race gets a cheeky smile. âCanât say I ainât flattered. Youâs a scrumptious catch too.â
My face twitches as I try to form a rebuttal. âI- I⊠I-!â
âWell, whaddya know! I got the card shark speechless!â Race softly places his own hand on my shoulder. âI say weâd make a great pair, hm? Before we kill each odda, whaddya say to a milkshake at Docâs?â
Heâs got me hook, line, and sinker. As a card shark Iâm not supposed to fall for anyone I play- where did I go wrong? Race is a pain! Yet still kinda cute⊠Ugh! Why does luv gotta be so complicated?!
âI- I ainât good with luv, Race,â I mutter. âThe only hearts Iâve been dealt with are cards. I ainât a normal date.â
No matter how hard I wanna look away, Raceâs eyes still capture me in a helpless trance. Iâve been disassembled from a cunning card shark into a pathetic mess. All I can do is stare as the man runs a hand softly across my cheek and looks down at me with kind eyes; a completely opposite demeanor than 10 minutes ago.
âI donât want a normal date, Amanda. A normal date picks at my habits and says I gots a gambling problem.â Race bumps his nose on mine. âYou wouldnât say that, wouldya?â
My breath hitches. âNo, you- youâre amazing at cards. Anybody who says oddawise is a joker.â
Now Raceâs face is mere inches from mine. âStill up for a date?â
A sassy grin spreads on my lips. âThink ya can handle me, Higgins? I am still your tutor, after all.â
He rolls his eyes. âJust lemme kiss you, ya mouthy tutor.â
And I do. Over and over and over, Race kisses up and down. All talk-a math and school drips away and I give in to this new-found feeling.Â
âNever thought Iâd fall for a bookworm,â Race mumbles between kisses.
I lightly smack his shoulder. âRemember this âbookwormâ just schooled you in Hearts, Higgins. You lost, remember?â
Race chuckles. âYeah. Lost my own heart to you too, sweetheart.â
Tonight really was a successful game after all.

Dallas Winston & Baby John Theory
ok so I've always loved the theory that Dally used to be a Jet from West Side Story before he was in the Curtis gang. It makes a tonne of sense right? WSS takes place a few years before The Outsiders and Dally canonically comes from New York and only came to Tulsa because he got caught up in a murder wrap and wanted to escape. So it makes a lot of sense!Â
But I just saw someone's headcanons that Dally was the "Johnny" of the Jets.
BUT THEN I REMEMBER THAT IN WSS THE JETS HAVE BABY JOHN WHO IS THE BABY OF THE GANG. HES ONLY 14 AT THE TIME OF WSS AND HE GETS CAUGHT UP IN THE MURDERS OF RIFF, TONY, AND BERNARDO!!!Â
So it could be a massive stretch ok BUT what if baby john was Dally. What if Baby John ran away from New York after everything happened, leaving his his shitty dad behind and jumped the first West Bound train he could. It carried him to Tulsa. He changed his name. He toughened up. He stopped being a pussy.
ok now for his name:
in the musical, after Dally dies, Ponyboy mentions that when he picked up Dally's t-shirt from the side of the tracks, he could still smell the cigarettes Dally always liked to smoke: Winstons.Â
Baby John jumped on that train holding nothing but a pack of Winstons cigarettes and a Switchblade. He saw the name "Dallas" on a sign at the train station, the train he had been on was stopping in Dallas, Texas after Oklahoma, When Darrel Curtis asked him his name for the first time he looked around and chose the first two words he saw, which happened to be âDallas Winston" and thats who he stayed for 3 years before he died. Thats the name he was buried under.Â

I love those wss tumblr Rp's so in tribute of that I'm sharing my headcanons for the wss characters
Riff: despite Riff being a part of the jets and being in a gang and shit, he knows how to treat women. Like when he's with a girl (or guy, lookin at you Tony) he will go all out to surprise her and treat her like the absolute queen she (or king, looking at you tony) is. He also is the kind of person who is scared to love at first because of all he's lost, but once he falls in love he falls down like 85 flights of stairs metaphorically for them. I also think he like just really likes donuts. No explanation for that. He just gives me a donut-lover kind of vibe.
Tony: Tony is a hopeless romantic. He lies awake at night wondering what it's like to fall in love until he does. He has all these little fantasies planned out, he dreams about his wedding, etc. He sees an old couple walking together on the street and pictures them as him and his future spouse.
Graziella: Graziella is the kind of person who's nice until she's not. She'll be the sweetest girl ever one minute, offering you a drink, giving up her seat on the train for an old lady, but the minute you mess with her loved ones, she'll fuck you up. She will literslly not hold back like your ass will be cooked and locked in a basement or some shit (you best know she knows how to hide a dead body) and then she'll help the authorities look for your body. She is also the kind of person who has a major rbf but is actually nice when you meet them.
Baby John: baby John may seem more innocent and like a kid on the outside, but in the reality he's just as valuable to the gang as anyone else. He can fit in small spaces, he's sneaky, etc. So the jets use him to pull pranks on the Sharks and shit. He also likes to steal small thinks like candy bars off those street stands.
Balkan: alright so yall know how when Gee Officer Krupke starts and Balkan is like "I want no part in this," but eventually gives in? He's an ambivert. He'll go out with his friends if they invite him, but his ideal Friday night might vary between partying hard with strangers or just sitting alone but not lonely at home maybe with a newspaper to read. Also hwar me out Balkan has an astigmatism but is insecure about wearing the glasses, but at night when he can barely see because of the street lights, he'll take out the old pair he got from Valentina.
who's headcanon do yall want next?

circling BACK to my theory that dally was part of the jets in new york, i was thinking about the idea of him maybe possibly being action, just going back to his birth name and moving away from new york to get a fresh start back in tulsa
but then i realized the timelines wouldn't have added up. i'm going with west side taking place roughly around 1961 (with that being with the movie was released, and timeline-wise, it works perfectly), and with the outsiders taking place in 1967, and given that dally is most likely the same age as darry (maybe a year younger), it would make dally about 19/20 at the time that the book events happen, he would most likely be about 14 when the events of west side happen
and there's only one (male) jet who could possibly be that age during the events of west side story, and come out of it traumatized enough to not want to see anyone his age experience that sort of trauma again. and after experiencing riff's tough love, and viewing the man he saw as his older brother dying, and seeing how all the deaths affected maria and his community, he decided to return home to tulsa, where he took on riff's hardened, cocky exterior, and took johnny and pony under his wing, because they reminded him so much of himself when he was younger.
and therefore, may i present my theory and hc that dally is baby john.
#west side story#the outsiders#and now i'm gonna go cry over this theory forever#dallas winston#baby john

Cool Your Jets- Ch. 3: Letâs Dance (Riff x newcomer)
I finish cleaning up my sad attempts to make dinner and then go to freshen up when I hear a knock on the door.
âRiff, if thatâs you Iâm gonna rip your arms off-!â I hiss as I yank the door open, only to find a dark blue swing dress with a note attached to it.
Marilyn,
Anita made this for you! She wants you to show those Jets whoâs boss! See you at the dance!
Maria :)
A smile grows on my face as I take the gorgeous blue dress inside. Thereâs a dotted pattern on the skirt and low-cut bodice, and like my other new dress itâs very flowy. I donât know how Iâm gonna be able to repay Anita for this! I slip it on with a tulle petticoat and twirl in front-a the tiny bathroom mirror. After some makeup and a halfway-decent hairstyling I think Iâm ready, and I almost feel too dressed up. Back in the country, simply wearân a dress with no mud spots on it was fancy enough, but I know city folks got higher standards.
As I head out I remember that Iâve got no clue where this place is, so I decide to go with my intuition and follow a group-a dressed up Puerto Ricans to a school. I wish I could go to school, but since I gotta pay rent thereâs no use tryân to squeeze in time.
Inside I can already hear blareân swing music and the sound-a lots-a people talkân and laughân. I stick to the wall and scope the gym out, noticing that the Sharks and Jets have divided the room.
âMarilyn!âMaria rushes up, dressed in white, and engulfs me in a hug. âYou came! And you look wonderful!â
âOf course she does!â Anita walks up, she herself wearân a black and red dress.
âI must admit, amor- this it definitely the best dress youâve made.â Bernardo smirks. âSorry about earlier, chica. I think we got off on the wrong foot.â
I wave it off. âNah, itâs fine. Iâm new here same as you, more water under the bridge. I havenât been to a dance in months, so letâs dance!â
We group together and walk onto the dance floor, and I notice that Anita and Bernardo take no regard for the line separating the Sharks and Jets. I feel awkward just standân here by myself, so I just stay off to the side.
âHey! Ya made it!â
Mouthpiece runs up with a big smile on his face. âHowâre ya supposed to dance when youâre tucked away in the corner? Come dance!â He takes my hand and starts leadân me to the center-a the room.
âUh I donno, Mouthpiece. Everybody hereâs dancing so intense, and back home weâve never had social events like this-â
âJust relax! Have fun!â Mouthpiece jerks my arm and sends me falling towards the floor, only to scoop me back up and twirl me around.
âAw- oh- Oh my God!â I cry as he lifts me up. âWhat are you doing?!â
âIâm dancing with a pretty goil!â He grins as he twirls me again.
I chuckle sarcastically. âYouâre too kind, Mouth!â
âThat your new nickname for me?â
âNo, itâs just that you can sometimes have a big mouth.â
âAw!â He dramatically clutches his chest. âIâm scarred beyond repair!â
âGet over it!â I playfully push him and he takes me in for anodda dip.
âIâll take over from here.â
We both turn and see Riff standing next to us with an amused smirk on his face.
âJeez, boss. We just got started,â Mouthpiece whines.
âIâm sure Velma wants a fella to dance with,â Riff waves him off. Mouthpiece leaves after giving me a quick look of apology. Now Riff turns to me and offers a hand.
I put my hands on my hips. âWhy on Earth would I dance with you after that? Mouthpiece invited me to a nice dance, and now you come here all high-and-mighty tryân to cut in!â
âI just wanna get to know the new goil in town. Câmon, ya wonât regret it!â He winks.
Cautiously, I look around and spot Grazi with anodda Jet.
âWonât your goil get jealous?â
Riff follows my gaze. âGrazi? Nah, Dieselâs keepân her company. Right now Iâm all yours.â
I give him one more skeptical look, then roll my eyes in defeat. âFine.â
He takes my waist, a lot more snug than Mouthpiece I might add, and starts waltzân us all over the room.
âTook a while to find ya! You been lookân for me?â
âWhen I came I expected to find the leader of a stubborn gang.â I shrug.
He laughs. âOh really?â
I give a devious smirk. âIâve been trying to find him, but all I can see is a cleaned-up Jet boy.â
âEy! Get away from her!â Bernardo comes up and shoves Riff away from me.
âYou got a problem, amigo?â The Jets leader pushes Bernardo and they both start circleân each odda.
âGuys, just stop it!â I try to break them up but itâs no use.
âSheâs with us, punk!â
âThatâs funny âcause last I checked she was meetân with us!â
âGuys!!â I get in-between them and they seem to remember Iâm still there. âIâm here for everyone! Can you guys just go ten minutes without fighting?â
âHey, hey, hey! Everybody please calm down!â A chaperone comes up to stand in the middle of the Jets and Sharks mob. âThere are beautiful goils here that wanna dance, canât we all just get along?â He goes to talk more about social rules, but then-
âThere you are!â Anita comes over and yanks me over towards Maria on the sidelines. âWhat are you doing? I suggest you stay with Maria and Chino until this mess gets settled.â
Maria huffs. âAnita! We want to dance!â
Anita shakes her head as she heads back to dance with Bernardo. âYou can, away from the Jets!â
I sulk in the corner as a massive dance-fight takes place: Sharks vs Jets.
âÂĄOye, Javi! Ponle fuego, ÂĄvamos!â Anita shouts.
Maria and Chino eventually join in, but me being alone leaves me awkwardly pacing back and forth.
âMambo!â
âMambo!â
âGo!â
As I watch the dance break out, I canât help but be a little bit jealous of Riff ând Grazi. She looks like sheâs having so much fun, but Riff seems⊠distracted. He keeps lookân at Bernardo, and Bernardo keeps lookân at Riff. I gotta say- he ainât a sight for sore eyes. I can understand why Grazi keeps him so close, and canât help but feel sad that I donât got no fella to call my own.
I make my way to the back, but then Riff seems to recognize someone next to me. He leads Grazi over, leaving me to stiffly loiter around and stare at the ground.
âTony! Ya made it! I knew youâd come!â Riff beams with joy. He pulls me forward and gestures to a tall, dark, and handsome guy. âMarilyn, this hereâs Tony. One-a the Jetsâ founding members and my best friend! Tony-â He gestures to me. âThis is Marilyn Jackson. Just moved here from upstate, so weâs makeân her feel welcome.â
Tony shakes my hand. âPleasure to meet ya! Iâd ask ya to dance but I promised my parole offer I wouldnât get too involved with social events. I only came âcause Riff said I would-â
âAnd ya still came!â Riff smiles.
Tony gives him a glare. âOnly for half an hour. Iâs here for you, not to cause a rumble!â
Riff shrugs. âYa canât back outta this, buddy boy. Soon as the coast is clear weâs meetân the Sharks to set it up.â
My face twists to a confused expression. âWhatâs a rumble-?â
âCâmon Riff, letâs dance!â Grazi grasps Riffâs wrist and pulls him back to the crowd, leaving me with Tony.
âIs he always this reckless?â I ask.
He sighs. âEver since we was kids. I was the one to hold him back, but since Iâs been gone I fear that Riffâs been getân outta hand.â He looks around the gym, then says: âI think Iâm just gonna drift around ând make sure the Jets play fair, if ya get my drift? You go on ahead- enjoy yourself!â
I go back to watching everyone jive and dance, and wondering what other odd characters Iâm gonna meet in this city. Iâm already caught between 2 gangs- what else is in store for Miss Jackson?
âYou wanna dance, buddy boy?â I hear Riff jab- most likely at Bernardo.
Uh-oh.
I try to get closer to the clump-a angry dancers, but the chaperones and policemen are blockân my path. Once I do make it through, an argumentâs already panning out.
âBut I wanna dance! Riff, you said we could dance!â Grazi wines.
âI know, I know doll. Lemme just-â
âNo! Iâm sick-a this!â She shoves him and storms past, but then turns back. âWeâre through!â She glares at me. âHeâs your problem now!â
I just stare wide-eyed as people around me begin to argue, until Anita comes over and guides me into the hallway.
âCome, chica. This is no place for a young lady.â
I shake my head. âIs it always like this? Stupid gangs ruining social events?â
Anita nods. âIâm afraid so. All we can do is try to calm them down when itâs over.â
She goes off to the bathroom to fix her makeup, while I go sit next to Maria in the hallway. But she seems⊠distant.
âMaria? Are you ok?â
She nods, but then seems to rethink and shakes her head.
âMaria, whatâs wrong?â
âI- I danced with a Jet boy,â she whispers. âAnd⊠I think I like him.â
I frown. âWho?â
âI think his name is Tony?â
âOh, Riffâs friend! I kinda know him, he seems nice. Whatâs wrong with that?â
âBecause Bernardo hates him! He hates all the Jets.â
I notice Tony walk up with Riff and the odda Jets as they go off with the Sharks.
Anita huffs. âCome, Maria. Weâve had enough drama for one night, so letâs head home. You coming, Marilyn?â
I look back and forth between the Jets that are still present and Anita. âSorry Anita, but Iâm gonna stay a bit longer and keep the guys in-check. You go on and get home safely.â
She nods and starts guiding Maria away, leaving me standing next to Tony.
âBuenas noches, Marilyn!â
âGânight, Maria!â I call back.
âMaria? MariaâŠâ I see Tony get a dazed look in his eyes.
I wave a hand in front of him. âUh, Tony? Earth-to-Tony? Ya with us?â
He blinks. âMarilyn? Have you ever heard-a luv at foist sight?â
âUhh,â My eyes widen and my jaw drops. âKinda?â
Tony gives a dopey smile. âThen I think Iâm in luv! Marilyn, I just kissed the most beautiful goil Iâve ever met, and her nameâs Maria!â
I gasp. âMaria? You mean my neighbor, Maria?â
âSheâs your neighbor? Wow, youâre lucky!â
âShe was just talkân âbout you!â I hiss, lookân around to make sure nobodyâs listenân.
Tony gawks at me. âShe was? Whatâd she say?!â
âI ainât gonna be spillân gossip- itâs just plain evil!â I cross my arms.
âAw, câmon Marilyn! Please! Does she luv me back? Did she like danceân with me?â His smile fades. âOr- or does she hate me, and never wanna see me againâŠ?â
I hold my hand up to steady the poor guy. âAlright, alright, fine! She luvs ya! Just donât go haveân a meltdown on me! I got enough emotional baggage as it is!â
Tonyâs face looks as if heâs been born again. âIn that case, Iâm gonna go find her!â
He starts off towards the exit, leaving me nearly speechless.
âTony- Tony! Ya canât just track her down! Thatâs creepy-!â
But itâs too late. Tonyâs already head-over-heels and is out the door.
âMarilyn!â
Riff, now lookân more smug than ever, strides up. âWhereâs Tony? He's gonna miss the meeting.â
I point to the door. âJust missed âim.â
Riff shrugs. âGuess Iâll have to fill him in later. Right now I gotta go meet with Bernardo.â
âAy ay! Leave her alone!â Anita comes up and waves him off. She leads me away, but not before I look back one more time and see Riff air-kiss me goodbye.
As he turns to leave, Anita scrunches her face. âI suggest you stay away from that Jet boy- Riff. Heâs no good for you. Iâm going to tell Maria the same thing about her Jet boy- theyâre all the same.â
âTonyâs not. Heâs not like them, and he wants nothân to do with the Jets. Heâs only here because heâs their friend.â
âOnce a Jet, always a Jet,â Antia argues as Bernardo strolls up to us. âHola, mi amor! I left Maria with Chino.â She points at me. âAnd came back for you because Bernardo said he just scheduled a rumble for tomorrow night, and I do not want you around those Jets!â She walks off again, and that word keeps ringing in my head.
âA- A what?â I frown. âIâve heard that word before⊠Riff mentioned itâŠâ
Bernardo nods. âItâs a rumble, señorita. An all-out fight between gangs when only one comes out on top. We just planned out with the Jets for tomorrow night, so I suggest you stay in unless you want trouble.â
Bernardo storms outta the room with Anita, leaving me alone to think over this idea until Mouthpiece finds me again.
âHey! I lost ya! Whereâve ya been?â
âDo you know about the rumble?â I ask darkly.
Mouthpiece opens his mouth, then shuts it again. âWho told you?â
âBernardo.â
He scoffs. âFigures some PR would tell ya.â
âIs it really that bad?â My voice is uneven.
He avoids my gaze and nods. âYeah, it can get pretty bad. Thatâs the reason Tony got locked up âcause he nearly beat a kid to death last year.â
My hand flies to my mouth. âDeath? Mouthpiece⊠I donât want anyone to die, is there any way to settle this without fighting?â
He smiles a little. âYa worried âbout me, doll?â
âIâm serious! None-a you deserve to die! I could talk to Bernardo, he might call it offâŠâ
âFat chance.â
I roll my eyes. âWhat âbout Riff? If I could talk to him-â
âAsk and ye shall receive.â Riff strolls in, leans against the wall, and motions for Mouthpiece to leave. âYa lookân for me, beautiful?â
I storm up to him and poke a finger at his chest.
âSo. Tonight was all a ruse to plan a fight. And all for what? Territory? Because Tony danced with Maria?â
âThatâs the broadâs name?â Riff asks with a scrunched face.
I smack him and start to breathe heavily.
âI was right. The rough gang leader was here tonight- a wolf in sheepâs clothing. You should be ashamed of yourself. They have every right to be here, same as you!â
Fed up with this, I storm off outta the gym and into an alley, all the while ignoring the faint calls from the aggravating Jet leader.

REWATCHING WSS 1961 ----- - Bernardo has converse, thats so silly!! of him - you can tell which territory you are because it says so like when they were in the Sharks territory, it says Sharks on the street, or look around the background and you can see spanish on the shop, thats so awesome - theres a heart with Bernardo + Anita inside of it and im going to SCREAM.
baby john writing " stink " under the word Sharks is always my favorite.
during this scene, you can find some stuff in the background
tthis looks like the names and some doodles of the sharks you can also see that it looks like a drawing of 2 people kissing, I WONDER IF THIS IS BERNARDO AND ANITA!! I love them.. - on the same wall where it says " Bernardo + Anita " theres a small writing that says Jets but it's crossed out
on the same wall theres some drawings of sharks
dont mind bernardo and the others chasing Baby John - on the playground where baby john gets stabbed in the ear, on the wall theres some writings
and in the same scene, theres fancy cars ontop meaning that they're probably in Jet territory
this is very random but this shark reminds me of a newsie... and is it because of the hat? yes
when Schrank tells the Sharks to leave they look very very pissed. Understandable.
as they leave they hold onto eachother!! like vros. Bros protecting bros
on the wall you can see the names of the jets, and you can see Tony on the top right i cant figure out what the heart inside says but i think its a J and a G?
it could be Riffs real name and Graziella's name like with Bernardo and Anita
behind them it says TONY!! sighh
more names on walls!!
another perspective of the wall with more names
Riff has family problems!! hmm... wowzer!!
he's actually so handsome
A-rab and Action being best buds!! -
a really bad pic of Snowboy!! whatever!! he's a silly. He's more of the,, goofer of the group!! -while bernardo and anita are talking, Chino looks back at them before going down with the others after "America" - (I'LL UPDATE THIS WHEN I CONTINUE WATCHING THE MOVIE.. THE WEBSITE CRASH AND IM TWEAKINGG!!! AHHH!!!)
