Tonight my candles are lit for those whom we lost in the #LockerbieBombing in 1988. 34 years does not make it any easier for those in my wee town of Lockerbie! It’s a day of reflection as always. I will teach my daughter the importance of why each person on that wall in Dryfesdale Cemetery means something to someone! U.S. Army soldier Walter C. Wetzel of Huntington, West Virginia, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on April 3, 1945, in Birken, Germany. Wetzel joined the Army in July 1941 and, by April 3, 1945, was serving as a Private First Class in the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. On that day, in Birken, Germany, Wetzel smothered the blasts of German-thrown grenades with his body, sacrificing himself to protect those around him. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor ten months later, on February 26, 1946, by President Truman. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Pfc. Wetzel, an acting squad leader with the Antitank Company of the 13th Infantry, was guarding his platoon's command post in a house at Birken, Germany, during the early morning hours of 3 April 1945, when he detected strong enemy forces moving in to attack. He ran into the house, alerted the occupants and immediately began defending the post against heavy automatic weapons fire coming from the hostile troops. Under cover of darkness, the Germans forced their way close to the building where they hurled grenades, 2 of which landed in the room where Pfc. Wetzel and the others had taken up firing positions. Shouting a warning to his fellow soldiers, Pfc. Wetzel threw himself on the grenades and, as they exploded, absorbed their entire blast, suffering wounds from which he died. The supreme gallantry of Pfc. Wetzel saved his comrades from death or serious injury and made it possible for them to continue the defense of the command post and break the power of a dangerous local counterthrust by the enemy. His unhesitating sacrifice of his life was in keeping with the U.S. Army's highest traditions of bravery and heroism." #WeRememberThem Posted @withregram • @wwiimemorial (at Huntington, West Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqk8UiFOksK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On November 10, 1943, Byron Johnson’s F6F-3 Hellcat crash-landed on the deck of the USS Enterprise. The force of the crash jammed the cockpit shut and Johnson thought he was done for.
But before the flames reached him, Lt. Walter Chewning, Jr., the ship’s Catapult Officer, ran into the blaze, pulled the cockpit’s emergency release, and dragged Johnson away from the plane.
Reflecting on the event, Johnson put it this way:
“It is affirmation of the fact that God answers most of our prayers through the acts of others. I was trapped in a burning plane and I breathed a prayer for help. And a man I had never met, in a sudden act of courage and heroism, sprinted down the flight deck and extricated me from my flaming plane.”
Chewning was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his bravery. Later in the war, Johnson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

My parents and I visited the Taiping War Cemetery in February this year. It was solemn as we pause and reflect on the sacrifices that the 864 fallen friends have made in service to the nation. They came from across the Five Powers Defence Arrangements (FPDA) nations 🇦🇺🇲🇾🇳🇿🇸🇬🇬🇧 together with mates from 🇫🇯, 🇮🇳, 🇳🇵and 🇿🇦. We continue to remember their courage, mateship and sacrifice this ANZAC Day. It was a glorious end to an incredibly busy day. Running around New York City for fashion week, 9/11 events, and then to Jersey City to photograph my last pictures of the day. The beautiful Twin Tower beam of lights on the Lower Manhattan skyline shined brightly. On September 11th, I will always remember my friends and colleagues who lost their lives on that bright and sunny clear blue sky morning. The moments of that day are etched in my brain forever. Sending prayers, love, and light to all who mourn. . #911memorial #nineeleven #nineelevenmemorial #september11 #september11th #septembereleventh #911 #werememberthem #weremember #strongertogether #buildbackbetter #restored #twintowersmemorial #twintowerlights #911lights #nycskyline #nyc #newyorkcity #neverforget911 #newyorkcityremembers #wtcmemorial #worldtradecentermemorial #lowermanhattan #worldtradecenter #neverforgotten #neverforget #newyorkcityphotography #newyorkcityview . . @americanstockexchange @911memorial @raw_newyorkcity @newyorkcity.explore @wtc @oneworldnyc (at Jersey City, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTuWEysrsnn/?utm_medium=tumblr

On December 20, 1946, "It's a Wonderful Life" premiered at the Globe Theatre in New York to mixed reviews but has since become the most famous Christmas film in Hollywood history. The film was World War II veteran Jimmy Stewart's first post-war performance, earning him an Academy Award nomination. Stewart was the first Hollywood actor to join the Army in the WWII era. After being rejected for low weight in November 1940, he enlisted in February 1941. As an experienced pilot, he reported for induction as a private in the Air Corps on March 22, 1941--less than two months shy of his 33rd birthday. When a producer asked him why he would give up his screen career for the military, he said: "This country's conscience is bigger than all the studios in Hollywood put together, and the time will come when we'll have to fight." By the end of WWII, he was a colonel in the Army Air Forces, fully decorated as the result of the 20 combat missions he flew over Germany as leader of a squadron of B-24’s. He continued his military career after WWII, serving in the Air Force Reserves and rising to the rank of Brigadier General. In one of the most iconic scenes in "It's a Wonderful Life," when George Bailey finds himself in despair, he says, “I’m not a praying man but if you’re up there and you can hear me, show me the way.” George Bailey wasn’t scripted to cry, but Jimmy Stewart did. In a 1987 interview, Stewart said of the scene, “As I said those words, I felt the loneliness, the hopelessness of people who had nowhere to turn, and my eyes filled with tears. I broke down sobbing.” Though Stewart rarely spoke of his military service during WWII, many believe that, what we now call, PTSD from his physically and mentally challenging combat missions and his guilt over the lives lost under his command, drove his extraordinary performance in "It's a Wonderful Life." Perhaps for these personal reasons, it was Stewart's favorite film. #WeRememberThem Posted @withrepost • @wwiimemorial #celebritysoldiers #famoussoldiers (at Columbia, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmZcqTBu9RA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For Remembrance Day... Posted • @awmemorial In the peace and quiet of the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial, a pigeon has been busy preparing for new life in a place that commemorates death, sacrifice and renewal. Each day the pigeon has been flying down to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to steal poppies, carefully crafting a nest in the lead-up to Remembrance Day in an alcove above the stained-glass window of a wounded Australian soldier. The wounded soldier symbolises the defining quality of “endurance”, and the nest of poppies nearby is a poignant reminder of the powerful bond between man and beast on the battlefield. #RemembranceDay #WeRememberThem #myAWM #AWMemorial https://www.instagram.com/p/B4tRPJ-BRKA/?igshid=1x5w46sfagie6
