The Rougarou

Remus Lupin/Sirius Black | M | 9.7k | After the end of the first war, Remus Lupin seeks some kind of new life in New Orleans. He finds it.

In the mosquito-song of morning, without the din of bass and customers and Order up! from Ish, bad thoughts bubbled up like groundwater from the cracks in the street: the little varnished wood box that held only a finger. Peter's dad ripping up the hymnal.   Stop it, Remus would say to himself.   Autumn drizzle like spit in the graves.   Just stop. Getting in bed, pulling the sheets over his face, steaming in the heat of his own breath.   Too drunk to stand, somehow too drunk even to cry. Two married slots in the ground. The itchy suit he'd borrowed from his father. Two babies fussing in the black pram—craning his neck to see Harry, then shrinking back in shame. The sour look on Lily's sister. The stone look on Dumbledore: how had it happened? How could we let it happen?   He'd try to put himself to sleep, but once he'd started his mind wouldn't let him stop, and sooner or later he'd think about the worst thing, the thing that felt like a crime:   Even in June it must be freezing in the North Sea.

some notes on this fic under the cut

first, i just want to acknowledge that i'm writing about New Orleans as someone who's never lived there, and i apologize unreservedly for anything i got wrong. i love the city and i've spent a lot of time there, but ultimately i'm just a tourist.

folklore

the rougarou is a cryptid in Cajun and Métis folklore, often depicted as a creature with a human body and the head of a dog or a wolf. the name is a cajunization of "loup-garou." the rougarou may be a syncretization of the French loup-garou legend and indigenous concepts of humanlike shapeshifters, like the Wendigo. In some iterations of the Wendigo legend, a person can be cursed with insatiable hunger and greed and cravings for human flesh after committing an act of cannibalism or violence. stories of the rougarou in Louisiana were a cautionary tale for children and sometimes represented a consequence of breaking lent. the rougarou also happens to feature in the Harry Potter universe, which is convenient for me.

the feu-follet is a ghost-light, similar to the will-o'-the-wisp, said to appear in the swamps of the Mississippi delta; traditionally held to be the souls of unbaptized babies

the French Quarter ghosts - years ago in the FQ we used to see real estate signs advertising houses and apartments for sale as Haunted or Not Haunted which i always thought was pretty cool. the ghosts generally aren't representative of any specific historical figures or events, except for one, sort of—i'll let you figure out which if you care to.

locations

Monsieur's is made up, obviously, but most other locations mentioned by name are real and were operating in 1982. Café Lafitte In Exile, Verti Marte, Café du Monde and The Apple Barrel are still around, but Charlene's and Las Pierres (which were actually de facto segregated in the way the fic describes) are now closed.

i made a little map—i'm not an artist, but i enjoy maps, like, a weird amount—of some of the locations in the fic.

New Orleans has been a center of queer culture in the South for a really long time—gay social clubs and carnival krewes have existed there since as early as the 40s, and Café Lafitte, which opened in 1933 (in its current location since 1953) is one of the oldest gay bars in America. i was really excited to find a book on Café Lafitte and its place in New Orleans queer history called In Exile: The History and Lore Surrounding New Orleans Gay Culture and Its Oldest Gay Bar by Frank Perez and Jeffrey Palmquist , two bartenders who worked there in the 80s and 90s. other than the obvious thematic connections in outlaws and exile, Café Lafitte is one of the couple of places that were around back then that i've actually been inside and could hope to describe with some accuracy.

Will You Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles - The Shirelles were a girl group in the late 50s and early 60s - i imagine Ish, somewhere in her 40s in this story, might have listened to them as a teenager. they were an early example of an all-Black band who found success with white audiences during the civil rights era, and they cultivated a "naive schoolgirl" sound and aesthetic that helped them get away with some relatively edgy-for-the-time sexual subtext in their songs. Will You Love Me Tomorrow was banned from radio in parts of the US - the lyrics address a lover before a tryst: tonight the light of love is in your eyes/but will you love me tomorrow?

The Stargazers - a UK pop group from the mid-50s. i'll be honest, this choice was mainly based on that name and some irresistibly appropriate song titles, but here's my excuse: their arrangements are heavy on tinkling piano and brass, and they collaborated with jazz-influenced British bandleader Syd Dean, so we're gonna go with the headcanon that young Remus got a taste for jazz through the pop groups of Hope's girlhood, many of which were covering (or just ripping off) American jazz & R&B artists at the time.

Junco Player by James Booker - "the Bayou Maharaja." A New Orleans-born jazz and R&B pianist, who led the house band at the Maple Leaf Bar in Carrollton (across town from where Lupin lives in this story) in the late 70s and early 80s. He was better known in Europe than in the US during the time Lupin would have been in his late teens, so if Lupin was a big jazz nerd he might have heard of him. Booker was openly gay and sometimes described as the "Black Liberace" due to his flamboyant style; he was also troubled and chronically ill, having been hit by an ambulance as a child and left with one working eye, a limp, chronic pain and a morphine addiction. He died shortly after the timeline of this fic.

Heart of Glass by Blondie - this is honestly just how it happened in the scene in my head, and it's obviously kind of on-the-nose, but I really think some disco-y pop, at that moment, would feel like a sign to Lupin that the city isn't going to give him what he wants and he doesn't belong there.

Okay friends.

I’d love to take a crack at this, but I’m a slow writer and am not quick-witted enough, but I know I’ve got a few friends who are.

This fun little thing is happening not too far from me and I think it’s hilarious, and it just screams fanfic to me.

So, anyone up for writing Sam and Dean into these shenanigans?

MANITOWOC - In what some view as a harmless Halloween festival and others as a satanic celebration, the first Windigo Fest will take over the streets of downtown Manitowoc during the first weekend in October.

Jody Dubinsky, owner of Treasures in downtown Manitowoc, said this festival is darker than it seems on the surface. She became concerned when her own research turned up old Native American tales of a creature called the windigo, sometimes spelled wendigo, which eats human beings and devours their souls, particularly young children.

She said she was also concerned about the dates of the festival, Oct. 6-7, adding up to 13, a number associated with evil, and the parade going backward on Eighth Street, an action she said would welcome the devil.

“When it is portrayed as a Halloween festival, my concern is that there will be families with children partaking in these events,” Dubinsky said. “I have nothing against Halloween, but you’re not going to see Superman or little princesses at this festival. You’ll see ghouls and goblins.”

However, Dawn Dabeck, owner of Dead by Dawn Dead and Breakfast and one of the masterminds behind Windigo Fest, said there people will be dressed as princesses and demons, and everything in between.

“It’s just going to be a whole lot of fun, and we … are encouraging people to dress up and come down and have fun and have drinks and eat and be crazy and safe,” Dabeck said. “We are not looking to cause any problems in Manitowoc. I have been doing Halloween for a long time … there is nothing satanic about any of this stuff. It is just pure Halloween fun.”

Dabeck said she uses the windigo figure because it hasn’t been overused or popularized and so makes it easier to brand as a Manitowoc specialty.

“It could have been any figure that wasn’t already overused. … We can brand that and make it Manitowoc’s own,” she said. “‘Manitowoc’ is a Native American word and so is ‘windigo.’ It’s a Great Lakes thing.”

The event includes a costume contest, a blood drive by the Red Cross, parade, pall-bearer relay, horror film contest, “dark arts” display and contest, and musical performances by The Badpiper — a finalist in Australia’s Got Talent — and Road Trip.

Dabeck said the dates for the festival were chosen because it was the first weekend in October and didn’t conflict with any other area events. She said the idea they were chosen because of the correlation to the number 13 is ridiculous, since the festival will land on different dates each successive year.

As for the parade, the only reason it is going the wrong way — starting at Bank First National at 402 N. Eighth St. and ending at the festival grounds on Franklin Street — is so the participants will end up at the festival, Dabeck said.  

“This is not a satanic parade, we are not walking backwards, we are just going the wrong way down the street,” she said.

Dubinsky and several other Manitowoc citizens spoke against the Windigo Fest at the Sept. 19 city council meeting, saying the festival would welcome Satan into the community.

Dubinsky said she and many others have convened for prayer meetings to pray about the festival. She encourages families to do their own research about the festival and make the right decision for their children.

“Don’t come down here unless you know what this festival is about,” she said.

Treasures will be closed for business Oct. 6-7, the days of the festival, in a show of non-support for the community event, Dubinsky said.

Windigo Fest has received widespread support from the community. In addition to the more than 20 sponsors listed on the website, the Windigo Society — a local non-profit focused on improving tourism in Manitowoc — has received a $13,000 Discover Manitowoc grant from the City of Manitowoc Room Tax Commission and a $5,000 Joint Effort Marketing grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

“We are thrilled to support a creative new event that infuses modern Halloween traditions with regional folk history,” said Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett in a press release Sept. 28 from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. “Windigo Fest is a fun way to attract new visitors to Manitowoc and create a positive economic impact for the community.”

Dabeck said she loves Manitowoc and feels tourism is especially important to the downtown area. She said she plans to continue to organize the festival each year and hopes it will grow to be an attraction for visitors to the area.

hello! :) happy wincest wednesday! tell me what you think about sam and dean and sleeping in the car! do they talk before they fall asleep? do they prefer to be efficient? is there a certain way they always sleep when they're in the car?

So I just spent a crap load of time reading your highway to hell tag and oh my god this is the MOST FUN GAME EVER. I had to tell myself 'Rin you gotta ANSWER THE DAM QUESTION'

Dean and Sam probably slept in the Impala more times that they care to admit especially when driving cross country. In those times when going out of the highway is too bothersome because the next exit just had a gas station and a 7/11 and the next motel is not for another 50 miles but if Dean has to drive another 10 more he will crash em both where he stands--so parking Baby somewhere safe is their check in for the night.

And I think that Sam and Dean are efficient where it counts and both of them, as the years progressed, have learned to cherish a good conversation. S1 samdean? They would fall asleep immediately after a couple of good verbal jabs at each other but let's say...S14 samdean? The whole fest would be a whole:

Dean: Sam you asleep?

Sam: ...

Dean: Do you think a Wendigo has a preference of meat?

Sam: You didn't even give me time to answer.

And I think the best way they would fall asleep is sleeping like how they did in the Baby episode. Just facing each other as they talk and using either the flannel or, if they smart, any pillows they could have in the back to lessen the uncomfortable feeling of a cold window pressed against the back of their heads. Maybe Dean reaching a hand out across the back of the seat just to feel Sam's presence (since I headcanon that the dude just sleeps starfish unless he has something to wrap around) while Sam's ENTIRE body is leaning towards Dean almost as if the seat was in the way. BUT there are rare occasions where both of them just really need each other's presence...so it's a whole tumble of arms and legs to see just how they fit both their bodies in the backseat and remain as close together as possible just to reassure them that, yeah, despite everything it's still them and this car.

a friend of mine who has watched the show since s1 was sharing interesting things with me so I thought I'd share with you. she works in casting and has for many years, we were talking about j2 and she said she doesn't know if there's a relationship but she's certain they love each other romantically even if suppressed. she said chemistry like they have, specially in s1, doesn't just happen. she has studied chemistry between actors and how to trigger it and test it during auditions and--

+--said you cannot forge chemistry, and their chemistry (according to her) is too sexual, and different than the chemistry people who simply get along well or like one another as friends or simple sympathy (for strangers). I think we can all agree that s1 was a sexual tension fest lol. she also said that she finds it very interesting that the tension fade away pretty quickly which cannot happen unless the desire was satiated on both ends or both fell "out" of passion at the same time (unlikely).

2006, wayyyy back then when the show's first season was going on, everyone noticed their chemistry. Eric quickly realized the show's main focus should be the brothers, because of the chemistry these two had. I think we all agree season 1 was a huge tension(of the sexual kind :)) fest. I mean wendigo??? the PILOT???? yEAH. You can't fake chemistry. If it's there, it will be there, and if there isn't, it won't. J2's chemistry was of a wonderful kind, not what you would call ''friendly''. THE WAY THEY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER BACK THEM I'M JUSTTTTTTTTTTT. And the way they still look at each other like this years after.

Before Happily Ever After Epilogue

Okay, back again with the epilogue for my last Josh thing. One year later, the group reconvenes on the mountain.

Warnings: Just swearing and kinda shitty storytelling on Josh’s part.

“So, what do you say? My sisters’ are busy and no one else is here yet…” Josh started, drawing your attention from where you were leaned on the stairway, examining the cabin you’d practically grown up in. You glanced down to find him giving you that familiar mischievous look as he leaned against the bottom bannister, raising an eyebrow.

“Are you always this horny? God, Washington,” you replied, rolling your eyes. He grinned, shaking his head.

“First off, flattered to be called God. I know I am pretty great at what I do,” he paused, giving you a playful wink causing you to roll your eyes at your boyfriend again as he started up the stairs to meet you, “Second! Why do you always assume I’m talking about sex? I mean, it is our one year anniversary but I had something else in mind. At least for right now.” He grinned, wrapping his arms around your waist to pull you flush against his body.

“Then wha-” You froze as you realized what he wanted. “Oh, no. No, no, no. Are you fucking serious, Josh? No way in hell am I ever stepping a goddamn foot back in that place and there’s no way you can convince me otherwise!”

“Princess, come on! It’ll be fun! You think I’m gonna let anything hurt you or that banging bod of yours?”

“I honestly think that’s all you like me for,” you muttered, rolling your eyes. Josh gripped you tighter, lifting your chin up to place a soft kiss on your lips that had you melting against him.

“You know I love you. You may be absolutely stunning but that’s just a bonus. You’ve been there for me. Through everything. The psyche ward when I was younger, my abandonment issues, my fears and upsets. How could I not love everything about you?” he asked, his voice soft as you met his striking green eyes. You sighed, shaking your head. You stood on your toes, pressing another kiss to his lips. You broke away with a groan as a wolf-whistle sounded through the cabin, Chris clapping at the show.

“If you like what you see so much, why don’t you join us?” you snarked, rolling your eyes at him.

“Sorry, you’re not really my type. Josh, on the other hand…” Chris joked, giving your boyfriend a wink.

“Shit, I guess we are gonna party like pornstars this weekend!” Josh exclaimed, his eyes lighting up, giving Chris a playful grin.

“Hey, yeah, sorry to ruin this thirst fest, but he’s mine and the only one fucking him will be me, kisses,” you sighed, dragging him to his usual room.

“Guess you can’t play nice with Chris, huh?” Josh teased as you shut the door behind you two. You rolled your eyes before you pushed him back onto the bed, standing in front of him. His eyes followed your movement as you reached to pull your shirt over your head, effectively silencing him.

Later, when you and Josh finally emerged from his room, you found Chris and Ashley cozied up together, sharing a bottle of wine, and Hannah and Beth looking through old family photo albums with Matt. “Shit, Josh, I forgot how dorky you used to look before you finally passed four feet.” Josh just grinned, shrugging slightly as he pulled you downstairs to join the party. He disappeared for a moment before coming back with two containers of whiskey and you groaned.

“I’m gonna spend most of the night babysitting your black-out drunk ass, aren’t I?”

“Hey, at least it’s a great ass,” Josh joked, winking at you as he handed you a bottle. You rolled your eyes, setting the bottle down before you sat down on the loveseat, curling your legs underneath your body. Josh took a seat next to you, pulling you close as he opened the bottle of whiskey, taking a swig. You leaned your head on his shoulder as he started speaking. “Wanna hear a story?” He grinned, looking around the room at his friends and his sisters.

“Please tell me it’s not a sex story you’re about to tell them,” you groaned, looking up at him. He turned his head to wink at you.

“Not unless you want me to,” he replied, grinning at you. Beth rolled her eyes. She heard the bathroom door open and saw Sam emerge from the bathroom, wrapped only in a towel. Josh took a swig of the whiskey.

“I would rather not hear about your sex life, Joshie. My sex life is a lot more interesting,” she replied, raising her voice so Sam could hear from upstairs. Josh started coughing the whiskey, staring at his sister in shock as he coughed.

“Oh fuck off, Beth,” Sam called down, rolling her eyes. She disappeared into her room, shaking her head at Beth. Six pairs of eyes stared at Beth as she shrugged, smirking.

“Well, fuck,” you breathed, grinning at her.

“Fuck. Let’s drink to that shit! Fuck, that’s my little sister!” Josh exclaimed, his eyes still wide as he grinned. He whooped as Sam stepped out of her room, starting towards the stairs.

“Hey, you owe me $20, man,” Matt started, leaning towards Chris who was staring at Beth, mouth agape.

“……You…You were betting on my boyfriend’s sister being into girls?” you asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Both of them, actually. Five for both of them and then ten they’d get together,” Matt replied smugly, as Chris grumbled, fishing his wallet out of his pocket and pulling a $20 bill out. Matt grabbed it, saluting two fingers at Chris. “Anyways, you were talking about a story?”

“Oh, shit, yeah,” Josh laughed, taking a swig. “So. This is a mostly true story that happened not too far from here on a dark, noiseless night like tonight. A guy and his best friend, a girl with a banging body,” Josh paused his story to give you a playful wink and you groaned, “found some creepy ass, abandoned sanitarium in these very woods. The guy figured if he got his friend scared enough it might lead to some much needed comfort from him. So, he convinces her to go in and explore.”

“Why do I feel like this is the two of you but it’s about to turn into some B-List horror movie shit complete with some sort of raunchy shit mixed in?” Sam sighed, sitting on the ground in front of the couch Beth was sitting on, Sam leaning against Beth’s legs.

“Hey, I’m telling the story. If you think you can do better, too bad, fuck off. Anyways, as I was saying before someone so rudely interrupted me, they head in and check this shit out, right? It’s been abandoned for practically forever so there’s fucking wheelchairs left overturned and decaying walls and doors that are left cracked. So, they decide to go explore, because what’s the worst that could happen, right? So he thinks maybe he can convince her of a quick bone session in one of these empty rooms they’re coming upon. So he’s trying to make his move on this gorgeous babe when they hear it. The soft sound from one of the hallways they’d just explored of a wheelchair quietly screeching down the hall. So. Slowly. So, obviously, he’s gotta save the girl, right? So he puts on this macho show to impress the girl thinking it’s just some vagrant that’s been squatting in the vacant, destroyed building. He steps out into the hallway, opening his mouth to tell whoever to scram, when he sees it. This big, ugly thing with antlers, bone thin, long limbs, and it towers over him, a crazed look on it’s warped face—”

“Seriously, Josh? A wendigo? That’s what you think that noise was?” you scoffed, rolling your eyes.

“Would you hush up? I’m trying to tell a story here!” he whined, glaring at you. You waved a hand, raising an eyebrow at him to continue. “Thank you. So. Yeah, it’s a big ugly, fucking terrifying thing. He screams, drawing his lovely companion’s attention to the hallway, unaware that he’s effectively dooming her, too. So this creature carts them both off to its lair, trapping them. So the guy decided to show the girl one last night of pleasure before they both end up toast. And pleasure it is,” Josh wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, causing Ashley to snort, rolling her eyes at him. “Anyways, the next day their friends are looking for them, searching everywhere like crazy and the only thing they find is a blue, lace bra.”

“You are honestly so stupid, Washington,” Sam sighed, rolling her eyes as Chris and Matt stood up, applauding loudly. Matt mimicked the sound of cheers as Josh stood up, raising the whiskey bottle in a salute before he bowed, sloshing whiskey on the hardwood floor.

“Jesus, Josh, would you watch out, you drama queen?” you asked, pulling him back down next to you.

“That was honestly the lamest story I have ever had to witness. Shit, Y/N, sorry you’re stuck with my brother,” Hannah snorted, shaking her head at her brother’s antics.

“It could be worse, I guess. At least I’m not poor Ash, stuck with Chris,” you teased, wrapping your arms around Josh to bury your head in his neck. He smiled, happy and content, surrounded by his friends, and family, and his soulmate. “Do you really think what we heard was a wendigo last year? You know those aren’t real. How do you even know what they are?”

“You inspired me with your weird fascination with supernatural shit and folklore. Decided I’d see what all it’s about and I stumbled on some weird shit the natives of this area believed in.” He shrugged, turning to press a soft kiss into your hair. He turned back to look at his friends. “You know. You guys have been here for me through everything. Through all of the struggles and the good times and the parties and just all of this. Through thick and thin. I don’t know honestly what I would do without all of you,” Josh paused, smiling fondly at the group, “Anyways, enough with the sappy shit. Who wants to go explore an abandoned sanitarium?” You laughed, tightening your grip on him, hiding your smile in his shoulder. You shook your head because you knew there was no one else for you.

HFoH Ep27: FFT2: Taken by the Wendigo

In case anyone was wondering, post-Fannibal Fest we have not been hiding out in Will Graham’s barn and throwing ourselves on the mercy of our northern neighbors. We even recorded this long, rambling wrap-up episode fairly quickly, but then the rest of fall, various life shit, some travel, and now the Tumblr fiasco all sidetracked us. 

But now here we are, with our exhaustive review of the con. If you want to skip the details, we’ll sum it up for you: @fannibalfest-toronto knows how to throw that kind of party! Some of our favorite moments were: standing in Will-Fucking-Graham’s HOUSE, the incredibly thirsty medical panel, gaining insight from the episode re-watch with Vincenzo Natali and Michael Doherty, and talking dino porn with Scott Thompson (which inspired the episode art, think it’ll be flagged?). The con felt well thought-out, everything ran smoothly, we got to meet lots of other Fannibals, the guests were informative and entertaining, and we would definitely go back.

So until we can make this pilgrimage again we’ll be here on Tumblr, though we’ll also be watching in case Fannibals decide to migrate elsewhere.
