if anyone is interested in learning more, The Devil Is Here in These Hills: West Virginia's Coal Miners and Their Battle for Freedom is a history of the West Virginia Coal Wars by an American labor historian.
the film Matewan by John Sayles is an easy-to-digest dramatization of the Battle of Matewan, a year before Blair Mountain, in which striking miners successfully resisted a strikebreaking attempt by mercenary unionbusters employed by the mining company. it's a decent primer on the conditions that pushed the West Virginia coal miners to fight and die for change: regularly dying in the mines, dependent on company scrip, being infiltrated and turned violently against each other by paid agents of their employer.
my dad was from coal country and these stories were part of the oral tradition of his community, more or less entirely omitted from public school curricula. it really is essential American history.
it is absolutely BONKERS to me, the number of people in the united states i have talked to who have never even heard of the battle of blair mountain. how the largest labor uprising in our history manages to skirt by so many leftists unknown is just downright astonishing. the largest labor uprising, and the largest armed uprising, period, since the civil war.
did yall even hear me?
THE LARGEST ARMED UPRISING!! besides the civil!!! fucking!! war!!! was fought in 1921 in the name of LABOR RIGHTS AND UNIONS by TEN THOUSAND RIGHTEOUSLY PISSED, STRIKING COAL MINERS
these absolute fucking LEGENDS marching out the hollers of west virginia, wearing their red bandanas and wielding their papaw's shotguns pointed at the lawmen. waging war against the fucking UNITED. STATES. MILITARY!!! for their right to work safely and be paid fairly!!!
and people just like. don't know about that? put some fucking respect on west virginia!!! and fellow appalachians, yall best just own it when ignorant people call you a fucking redneck cause our ancestors did that shit and they did it for us

In the United States, the first Monday in September is celebrated annually as Labor Day. Born from the efforts of unions in the nineteenth century, the holiday stands today as a celebration of workers and fair labor practices across all industries.
A new JSTOR Daily round-up features stories about labor activism and workers' rights, agricultural labor, domestic workers, and global labor concerns.

Thistle's Moony's Midlife Crisis Fest Rec List Part 2: Remadora
I decided making the list short enough that I actually start was such a good idea that in addition to splitting up muggle/canon setting fics, I'm splitting up Remadora and Wolfstar. And this one is easy because there was one Remus/Tonks (ish) fic that just completely blew me away. [Part 1: Modern AU Wolfstar Fic Recs]
Written on Water (13k, M) by EveSaintYves @evesaintyves
Tags include: Divorced Remus Lupin, Chronic Illness, Custody Arrangements, Unreliable Narrator, Unreliablest Narrator Ever Actually
Six years after the war, Remus navigates co-parenting with Tonks and contemplates the end of their marriage under the weight of what the war has done to all of them.
Y'all this fic is so goddamn GOOD. Well, if you like canon characterizations and angst and realism and and you like having your heart run over by a herd of rampaging thestrals. More raving below:
From my comment:
AHHH this left a dull ache in my chest in the best way. it's so painfully real and honest. I love stories which insist things can be bleak and we can be depressed and we can feel alone and things can still matter. the mundane matters. actually, there's so much that's not mundane. like this fic just feels quite insistently hopeful despite being so bleak and leaving me achy, and I'm just obsessed. a few of the parts which stood out to me: "She made tea, once he'd stopped bleeding, and sat on his lap in her seafoam robe to drink it, the baby burbling from the next room, the smell of her wet hair so insistent: chemical apple, never before so sweet. His hands stroked and kneaded the shape of her. Love was just trickling out of him as from a wound. Never before or since. It's like trying get blood from a stone, she would say to him years later, low because Teddy was just in the other room, and her hand would make a fist and squeeze, blue veins standing out in it, loving you." AHHHH!! like the imagery! and this very real very common rarely written about relationship feeling! so well done my little avoidant attachment heart loves this so much <3 all my love to my avoidant remus <3 seriously this fic is just divine.

Are currently working on any projects that are exciting you?
this is such a sweet open-ended question to send a writer, thank you, sorry i took like 8 months to answer. i passed it on to a few other people to share the love.
i wrote a fic for @moonyfest, and their author reveals are next week so i'll get to post it and talk about it here. it started as some rambling in my notes app like 2 years ago, became like a 5000 word repository of ideas, and i finally signed up for the fest to give myself a deadline. it was a joy to write - especially to finish - and i'm proud of it.
i have chapter 12 of the last mission more or less done, but i'm holding off on posting until chapter 13 is done too because i'm doing some weird narrative shit with them and want to make sure i don't have to retcon anything. sorry to all of the sunbleached skeletons who have wasted away waiting for an update. rest in peace though ✨️
also got a bunch of tonks/fleur vignettes i'm trying to wrangle into a series, and i woke up really early the other day and started a wip about rita skeeter so uhhh we'll see.
plus over the weekend i made like over a liter of garlic confit, which it turns out is a ridiculous, disrespectful, criminal amount. i made pasta and i've got a focaccia dough fermenting right now but like what else. what else can i put like 30 garlic cloves and a shit ton of stinky olive oil in. i need help.
