Milestone Monday
A Brewed Rebellion
On this day, December 16, 1773, the Boston Tea Party took place, a significant event in American history. It was a political protest by the American colonists against British taxation without representation. The Tea Act of 1773 allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies. This undercutting of local merchants and enforcing a tax on tea was the catalyst for this protest.
On the night of the incident, a group of colonists, known as the Sons of Liberty, dressed as Mohawk Indians to conceal their identities and boarded three British ships anchored in Boston Harbor. They threw 342 chests of tea, worth around the equivalent of one million dollars today, overboard into the harbor.
Samuel Adams primarily led the Boston Tea Party, which was organized by John Hancock. However, the identities of many of the participants remain a mystery. Notably, Francis Akeley is the only individual known to have been arrested and imprisoned for his role in the event.
The images come from:
Dorothy Q: Together with A Ballad of the Boston Tea Party & Grandmother's Story of Bunker Hill Battle by Oliver Wendell Holmes with illustrations by Howard Pyle, published in Boston by  Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1893.

Adam wants to know is Quasar is as worthy as Mar-vell was to wield the bands, so he gives him a test. Five morality questions, and in the end, Adam tells Quasar that he answered the same as Mar-vell on all of them but one, but won't tell him which one... but it seems to be enough to appease Adam.

Ww idea mixed w/ the garden of Eden, and the evolution of hellmaidens.
like what if Adam and Eve , Eve eating the apple, the serpent being a demon becomes hell maiden, she getting the mark after biting into it causing destruction, The snake convinced Eve to eat the fruit, which conjured negative and destructive concepts. Later being “ cursed” for it along with the snake Cause I’m the movie it seems like being a hellmaiden is a type of curse . Like it’s a bite, the apple was forbidden, so when she ate it all hell broke lose . LIKE HOW A WORM CAME OUT OF KAT'S APPLE WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER. Eve was now being tempted by Satan working through an inferior being

🌾Malik hails from Strangerville and Sienna is from Oasis Springs so they both love the dry heat. Sienna has loved horses ever since she was a girl and has always dreamt of owning her own ranch. Whereas Malik’s father, Wendell Adams (famous equestrian), is gettin on in years and has asked Malik to come prepare to take over the family ranch in Chestnut Ridge; El Rancho Cimarrón. why is this open? did i want to make a post? well, i most definitely forgot what i wanted to write so you'll get nonsense instead:
It was a dark and stormy night* when Wendell Grotzplotz decided to sit down and have a nice cup of tea. This would not have been a strange occurrence in any other household in the neighborhood but Wendell hated tea with a fierce, and some might say foolish, passion. There were few things in life that Wendell hated more than tea which were 1. his own name, 2. people who unironically used lightyears as a measuring unit for time and 3. cattle prods. The distribution of his hatred for these things was ever changing but after a thorough study he had gathered that his hatred was proportional to the proximity of aforementioned things. He had thus decided to avoid farms, conversations about space and talking to his father at all costs. He had also decided to never conduct a study ever again lest he experienced another series of events so embarrassing that not even Rowan Atkinson would re-enact them in a movie. Despite his efforts to forget everything that transpired his brain had taken to replay the events in a frankly concerning level of accuracy every time he closed his eyes.
This was at least partly the reason why he was adamant to enjoy a nice cup of tea this evening. He had heard that tea had a calming effect and hoped that deciding that he liked tea would 1. be enough to make the experience enjoyable, 2. lead to a scenario where he closed his eyes and would not see a man wildly gesticulating with a cattle prod in his hand in a way that violated several geneva conventions had the cattle prod been an AK-47 and not a cattle prod. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for the man with the cattle prod (who had probably paid a lot of money or done some dark magic rituals to ensure he'd haunt Wendell forever) Wendell had no idea how to actually prepare tea. If he granted himself the very novel experience of being honest with himself, he would even have to admit that he didn't particularly know what tea even consisted of, really. Sure, water had to be involved somewhere and hadn't his aunt always talked about tea leaves? Wendell briefly contemplated stepping outside to collect some leaves from the trees that were standing outside but a ferocious gust of wind making the trees dance a rather abysmal approximation of the Macarena made him reconsider. He liked the rain, he really did, but only if it consisted of water and not 300-million-year-old-millipede-fossil-size branches. Instead he started rummaging around in his kitchen for anything green and leafy. His first cursory rummaging (rummage?) did yield no findings save for his glasses which he had, not without some pride, put on the countertop for easy finding and promptly forgot about. He had been reading books with much squinting and holding in front of him at arm's length for a good 2 days now. After some light cursing and then, after this had not made him feel better, more heavy cursing at his lack of object permanence that every toddler would envy he conducted a more thorough rummaging. After opening about half of the cupboards he discovered a wooden puzzle he had gotten for his 12th birthday. After two hours he had finally solved the puzzle and remembered the Rubik's cube he'd stashed... somewhere. Another two hours later he had found the Rubik's cube (and 10 old science magazines, an old sketchbook, a rather new sketchbook (no improvement to be seen), a rubber duck, paper clips and 51 playing cards) and successfully brought it into a, in his professional opinion, completely unsolvable state. Frustrated, Wendell put the cube on the counter for his sister to solve should she visit some time and embarked on a new (or rather 4 hours old and temporarily forgotten) mission: Rummaging around in his kitchen in search for something green and leafy. He rummaged so expertedly that he would have won Olympic Gold in rummaging if there was an Olympian rummaging category. Alas, there was not so he persevered without price or fame and continued his extraordinarily unsystematic search of the kitchen. He briefly considered if the green paper he found in the refrigerator was green and leafy enough, then marveled at the two playing cards he found in between two plates bringing his card deck to an unexpected 53 cards and finally discovered a clump of what seemed to have been fresh coriander once upon a time. He allowed himself a good half second of unrestrained joy then remembered the time and anxiously listened for any signs of disturbed neighbours for 10 minutes. Fortunately for him and his dislike of long winded conversations everything stayed quiet. He took a deep breath of relief and started studying the bundle of coriander with an intensity people usually reserved for groundbreaking, Nobel prize worthy dissertations or early 2000s TV shows with questionable quality. Having acquired a suitable component had - to his chagrin - not made a pop-up detailing the further necessary steps of his quest appear in thin air. Thus he was rather at a loss as to what to do. Something with water. Hot water? Wendell was on his way to retrieve a saucepan to heat the water and coriander in as his salvation appeared in his view.
His salvation stood gleaming and majestic on the countertop, a symbol of hope in the dark and stormy night, a beacon of practicality. And it's number was six hundred, four score and ten and it's name was 'Gilbert' (in reality it was named Exclusivo Deluxe Barista 690 but Wendell had decided that if he had to endure having such a ridiculous name then his coffee machine had to suffer the same fate). It had just occurred to him that coffee basically was tea with beans instead of leafy stuff, so what could possibly be better at cooking tea than his beloved coffee machine? Wendell crushed the leaves and put them in the compartment for the ground coffee. Triumphantly he pressed the "On" button of the machine. The machine informed him that the water tank needed to be refilled. Wendell refilled the water tank and pressed 'continue'. The machine started a cleaning process. Wendell used the 5 minutes of cleaning to glare at the coffee machine, fail to solve the Rubik's cube and acquire a sudden earworm of 'O flower of Scotland'. The machine informed him that the old coffee grounds and drip water had to be emptied. Wendell emptied the tray and put it back in. The machine informed him that he had to put the tray back in in order for the machine to function. Wendell pulled the tray back out and pushed it back in. The machine informed him that he had to put the tray back in in order for the machine to function. Wendell pulled the tray back out and pushed it back in with a bit more force. The machine informed him that he had to put the tray back in in order for the machine to function. Wendell pulled the tray back out and pushed it back in even more forcefully. The machine informed him that he had to put the tray back in in order for the machine to function. Wendell performed the tried and tested ritual of screaming at the machine inventing a few new curse words in the process. The machine decided that, actually, the tray was already put in, oops. Wendell gently pushed the button for espresso (the more concentrated the tea the more relaxing it is). As this didn't lead to an immediate reaction, he started hammering on the button. With a noise that could have easily been featured on Pink Floyd's Ummagumma the machine started making the first of the eight tea espressos (tespressos?) he'd ordered and Wendell realised at the same time that he had forgotten a cup. Unfortunately he had also forgotten where he normally kept his cups so he just grabbed the nearest object. While the plastic bag steadily filled with a liquid of rather unfortunate colouring, Wendell allowed the anticipation of a good night's sleep to rise. Finally he would be able to close his eyes in peace. With the gurgle of a dying unicorn the machine finished its job. Wendell raised the bag to his lips, took a small sip - and then immediately flung the bag into the sink. A small tsunami of 'tea' engulfed counter and floor. Wendell turned and sat down on the couch. Exhausted, he closed his eyes.
Rays of sunlight danced over Wendell's face as he opened his eyes again. He was lying on his couch in the living room and the position of the sun told him that it was approximately 9 am. With a start he realised that he hadn't had one dream about cattle prods this night. Maybe he really should be making tea every evening from now on.
*the night was dark because night's generally were pretty dark except for the one's way north and south, which desperately tried to hold back their darkness for half a year because they wanted to feel special, only to fail at it spectacularly in the second half of the year making the darkness bleed into the day. the night was stormy because of ~vibes~

Albums of the Year 2024
I used to do this every year, but as with everything else in my life, the pandemic and academia got in the way. This is the first year since 2021 where I've made a concerted effort to keep up with (at least to some extent) new music, and I'm feeling the itch to do that typical too-online, self-indulgent thing of writing up a list of my favourite new albums of the year in the vain hope someone might care about it.
Believe it or not, I used to do a full 50-album list, but I'm chilling out a bit with this one and limiting it to 20. These are the records that have gotten me through a hugely transitional year in my life, and my only hope is that if you're reading this, at least one of these records might end up meaning something to you, too.
20. Cunningham Bird by Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird
Tumblr media
A collaboration, built over the last few years, culminates in a wonderful ode to one of the greatest, most volatile, singer/songwriter collaborations of all time.
19. Understory: Live at the Village Vanguard by Ben Wendel
Tumblr media
One of those great, live jazz recordings that makes you feel as if you're sat in the venue, watching it all unfold. Brought me back to my own, religious experience at the Vanguard from a couple years ago.
18. Woodland by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Tumblr media
The neo-old time genre's greatest songwriting duo return with an unapologetically contemporary suite of beautiful new songs. There's a reason Welch is your favourite folk songwriter's favourite songwriter.
17. Nothing by Louis Cole and the Metropole Orkest
Tumblr media
If you're into Louis Cole's whole deal, then the majority of this record will feel pleasantly familiar to you. Just add on a full orchestra to give the oddball's usual brand of jazz/funk/fever dream songwriting some extra depth, as well as provide a new colour palette for some rather daring compositional diversions. Lovely.
16. Eagle's Point by Chris Potter
Tumblr media
Not a huge amount to say about this one other than that it's an immensly entertaining set of new tunes from four of the greatest jazz musicians currently alive. What's not to like?
15. King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2 by Denzel Curry
Tumblr media
Not usually my preferred brand of hip-hop, but at this point, I'll give anything Denzel Curry does a chance, and while this record isn't as much my thing as his last few projects, it's so meticulously made and visceral that I've found myself returning to it over and over again.
14. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT by Billie Eilish
Tumblr media
The first of three absolutely essential pop records from 2024 on this list. Eilish and her brother/producer have designed an imaculate album of queer love (and lust) songs which feel especially mature for such a young artist.
13. Against the Fall of Night by Sungazer
Tumblr media
I'm glad bassist Adam Neely has diverted his attention away from video essays to focus on his metrically-experimental, electronic jazz group, Sungazer, because this band is doing legitimately crazy and fascinating work. Give this a spin if you like the challenge of trying to head bang to music which refuses to be rhythmically predictable.
12. brat by Charli XCX
Tumblr media
Maybe the album of the year in terms of pure cultural dominance. brat is, by my count, second only to one other pop record released in this calendar year (stay tuned). If you could make an audio recording of adrenaline, it'd sound like this. Summer may be over, but I'm not ready to stop bumpin' that.
11. Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé
Tumblr media
She's just unstoppable, okay? This latest record from arguably the most famous woman alive is properly totemic pop Americana. If I had to pick a single song of the year, it might be '16 Carriages', which makes it all the more impressive that the rest of the album is good enough to hold up in comparison. It's also cool getting to see some of my favourite bluegrass musicians being involved in a project this massive.
10. Speak to Me by Julian Lage
Tumblr media
Julian Lage might be the single most impressive jazz guitarist alive. All of his projects are good if not great, but this one was particularly exciting because he made his recorded return to the acoustic guitar - a real treat whenever it happens. Surrounded by a large-ish and very eclectic ensemble of musicians, Lage's compositions and playing sparkle even more than usual.
9. Wall of Eyes by The Smile
Tumblr media
I like Radiohead, okay? I do think Yorke, Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner have found something special with this new collaboration. The sophomore record is more assured than their debut and has Yorke's best songwriting in years. This stuff is hypnotic!
8. All Now by The Staves
Tumblr media
I was so worried that after the eldest Stavely-Taylor sister left the band, that the sound produced by the two remaining sisters would suffer some. Sometimes it's nice to be emphatically proven wrong. All Now is a sonic extention of The Staves' last record, Good Woman, but this one trades wistful melancholy for relentless optimism, and my goodness does it work for them.
7. Fearless Movement by Kamasi Washington
Tumblr media
There are very few things more satisfying than when an artist you've felt let down by in the past makes an unequivocal return to form. Kamasi Washington has always been compelling, but I've found him liable to get caught up in his own legend at times at the expense of his music. This new record feels a lot more grounded and a lot more substantial. It's also just a ton of fun!
6. Väsen & Hawktail by Väsen and Hawktail
Tumblr media
Two of the most exciting acoustic ensembles in the world, who have been dancing around one another for years now, have finally come together for a full-length record, and it's marvellous! Both bands have lost a member to other projects recently, so given their natural proclivity for each other's music, it made sense for them to collaborate in order to fill those gaps. The sound of these combined groups is nothing short of miraculous. If you like instrumental folk music at all, then this is essential listening.
5. Service Merchandise by Previous Industries
Tumblr media
Often, nostalgia can be a blight on culture, but when employed effectively, it can be a tool for exposing deep truths. My personal favourite rapper, Open Mike Eagle, along with Video Dave and Still Rift, have done just that on their debut album as a trio. Service Merchandise doesn't bemoan the loss of the past, but rather highlights the out-of-placeness of those who cling to it. The themes are sombre but the bars carry Eagle and co.'s signature whimsy.
4. GNX by Kendrick Lamar
Tumblr media
In contrast, the latest release from LA rapper Kendrick Lamar is maybe the least whimsical major release of the year. It's direct, confrontational, and introspective to the point where it comes uncomfortably close to self-indulgence. What is lyrically quite a challenging record is made spectacularly listenable thanks to its absolutely stacked lineup of bangers which are sequenced to perfection. Undoubtedly Kendrick's best since To Pimp a Butterfly.
3. Fly by Michael Mayo
Tumblr media
To my mind, the most deeply underdiscussed and most exciting young voice in jazz right now is Michael Mayo. I'm deeply obsessed with his debut album, Bones, which is a big, dense production. His latest, Fly, is far more intimate by comparison, but no less ambitious. Backed up by virtuosos Shai Maestro (keys), Linda May Han Oh (bass) and Nate Smith (drums), this suite of songs by the vocalist and composer is the most involving jazz record I've heard all year.
2. Only God Was Above Us by Vampire Weekend
Tumblr media
I wanted to put this list out today, because come Monday I will have seen Vampire Weekend tour this album live, and the experience will likely skew my opinion of it.
I cannot think of another mainstream popular music outfit that addresses the modern Jewish experience at all, leta lone this well. Vampire Weekend are truly singular in that way. Every new release of theirs speaks to diaspora Jewishness in new, specific and relevant ways. What makes this particualr record so special though is how aesthetically adventurous it is while being so cogent in the delivery of its themes. This is up there with the band's very best records in a discography without a single dud. P.S. 'Classical' is an all-time great indie rock song.
1. The Golem and Other Tales by Sam Reider and the Human Hands
Tumblr media
Accordionist and pianist Sam Reider's newest project is a manifestation of something I've been personally wishing for for close to a decade now: jazz and progressive instrumental music as a vehicle for explicitly Jewish cultural expression.
When I was in New York working towards the PhD I would ultimately flame out of, I spoke with Sam Reider and his bandmate, saxophonist Eddie Barbash, about the connection between their music and their relationship with Jewishness (not to be confused with Judaism). It was a lovely and eye-opening conversation that I'd like to think was as helpful to them as it was to me.
I'm not arrogant enough to suggest that this album is a result of that conversation, but it's so unbelievably exciting to see Sam, Eddie and the rest of the Human Hands construct a suite of pieces which so perfectly capture what I was searching for during that period of my life.
Reider's compositions are a particularly magical amalgamation of jazz, bluegrass, klezmer and other folk traditions from around the world. Those combined sound worlds feel like natural bedfellows in Reider and co.'s capable hands, and on this record. The result is an instrumental retelling of the 16th century Jewish folk tale, The Golem of Chelm. I can't tell you just how special this album is to me, but I can tell you that it sounds amazing, and that this group of musicians, led by Reider feel like they were cosmically destined to make this music together.
