The first wave: Growing up in Germany in the 1970s, if you wanted the „cool“ stuff, you had to listen to the music of other countries and in different languages than your own. German pop-music was dominated by the so-called 'Schlager'. At their best, they were german versions of the french 'chansons', at their worst it was something to yell together with drunk people at a beerfest. But even the better stuff was never really cool. The Teens and Twens of this period listened to Rock or Disco. I remember posters of longhaired people in tight Jeans on the wall of an older girl from my neighbourhood. Born in 1968, I had no idea what 'cool' meant. I was busy learning to read and write in german. I listened to everything, that was played on the Radio. Classical Music, Rock, Schlager and even german folk music. I loved all of it and I knew from very early on, that listening to music is one of the greatest thing you can do on this planet.
As it happens, you get older and suddenly it becomes more important what people on the TV tell you or your friends at school and you realize, german music is hopelessly oldfashioned (I knew nothing of Kraftwerk by then) and I said goodbye to Katja Ebstein and Hitparade and tuned in to the 'Internationale Hitparade' and sometimes even to british army radio stations. I didn't understand, what they were singing and i don't quite remember what I listened to then, but it sure felt more interesting than Wencke Myhre and her „Knallrotes Gummiboot“. So when i reached the age of 12, the New Wave Movement in the UK reached Germany and I suddenly knew what 'cool' meant. The coolest track I was about to discover was „Fade To Grey“ by Visage. It was so elegant, so creative, so powerful. It seemed like all the hormons that were beginning to build up in my body seemed to synchronize with this song. You could feel sad and dance to it at the same time. What more do you want at that age?
It was also the first time, I saw a music video, where you see something else than a band performing their song. I loved it. It was all so mysterious. Who was this Steve Strange? Who are the other five guys, whose names were written on the single. Why do they not show? The first year of my „woke“ popmusic personality, I listened to the Visage Album over and over. I was sure this was to be my favorite band forever and I would never have to back to german music gain. Well, little did I know...

Wencke Myhre
