Eurovision Fact #444:
More solo artist women have won the Eurovision Song Contest than any other type of act.
Solo act women have won 37 years out of the 67 years the contest has been running. That's about 55% of the total wins. (This is counting Conchita Wurst, and counting Loreen twice for both 2012 and 2023).
Additionally, all four winners of the 1969 contest were solo act women, and Loreen won twice.

The lead for Gold-Rubin is stronger... but still unconfirmed 😅
**Some sites list Tymofii's birthday as being in September, however his actual Ukrainian Wikipedia page shows it as February 6th, so that's what I'm going with

Eurovision 2004 - Number 53 - Varna Springer - "Heimwee"
youtube
Another little extra for the Nationaal Songfestival in 2004 was that in the heats, each contestant had to sing a cover of another song as well the song they were competing with. Varna Springer chose to sing De Troubadour, the Dutch joint winner of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, originally sung by Lenny Kuhr. A brave choice.
The only reason I mention this, is that this is almost the only other trace I can find of Varna Springer singing in the limited research time I have available. Heimwee (Homesickness) is a self-written song with more than an element of traditional music. The rhythmic changes between verse and chorus as well as within the chorus are intriguing in their own right, even if it feels a little stop-start at points.
There's a lot of repetition in the lyrics even if the rhythm isn't co-operating. It's a short tale of being lost. Not at home, under a sizzling sun, on top of burning waves and a flowing tide, and being crippled by homesickness. Wherever Varna finds herself, it's clear that she doesn't want to be there. The lyrical content makes this sound like a folk song from quite a long time ago, even if it was only written for the contest.
For a national final, this is non-typical stuff. That may be what got it eliminated from its heat, finishing fifth of the six songs and casting Varna back into obscurity. If only she'd brought that accordion on stage that she's brandishing in the preamble.
One of the other traces of Varna I've found are some lockdown era Youtube songs with lyrics videos (including Heimwee) along with Henk Greven. I don't know what Varna got up to between 2005 and 2020, but given her accomplished song-writing talent and clear knowledge of folksong, I've got to belief that she's been writing and performing on the folk circuit in the Netherlands - even that she has not left a trace on the web.
If anyone has any pointers to any other performances by Varna, please let me know.

The Moon Landing, for sure.
But the Eurovision nerd in me also wants to say the fact that Eurovision had four winners that year because there was a four-way tie for first place and no tiebreaker rules in place.
From left to right: winners Lulu (United Kingdom), Salomé (Spain), Massiel (Spain, 1968 winner), Frida Baccaro (France), and Lenny Kuhr (Netherlands)
