In Praise of Drive-In Movie Theaters
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, I’ve been kinda consumed with other things (safety, health, adjusting to new normal, working from home, home day caring), but this blog is important to me, hence I’ve been posting quite a bit. Now I think it’s time to begin a new column about pop culture that I am missing during this time. The most obvious is going to the movie theater. Nobody on this planet wants to go to the movies more than I do...but it’s got to be safe. As of this writing: of the 200 movies theaters that are open for business in the U.S., approx. 150 are drive-in movie theaters. While in-door movie theaters are doing what they can (spacing out seating, taking temperature before entry, etc), the drive-in movie theater could be the safest way to experience entertainment: people attending in their own car while watching a big screen outdoors, while maintaining social distancing.

The classic drive-in movie theater
The drive-in theater had been around since the silent film era, but it really came to prominence with the baby boom generation around the 1950s. It really became a family-oriented piece of Americana: parents driving in with their kids in the backseat, who could fall asleep during the movie, watching under the stars at night with other families in their cars. Around the 1980s, so many drive-ins began closing because those same families could stay in and rent a VHS movie or watch cable. As of late 2019, there were 305 operational drive-ins. In March of this year, with all of the lockdowns, some states allowed drive-in theaters to continue. NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo said drive-ins would be the first movie theaters to open. Right now, not only are drive-ins having a moment, other industries are adapting the drive-in model as well: some music venues are planning to set up for drive-in concerts and some restaurants are setting up their parking lots as drive-ins for eating meals.

For me, the first time I went to a drive-in movie theater was in 1986 when I was 10. While on vacation in Cape Cod with my Dad and Stepmother, we went to Welfleet Drive-In Theatre. I got to see a double feature of Disney’s animated The Great Mouse Detective and the live-action The Journey of Natty Gann, released a year earlier. We liked it so much, later that week we returned to see Back to School. In the late 90s while I was attending Fitchburg State there was the Tri-Town Drive-In theater in Lunenberg, where we filmed a brief scene for a student film Pizza Bandits. In 2014, when my feature-length documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at the Independent Film Festival Boston at the Somerville Theatre, the short documentary The Exhibitor, about Welfleet Drive-In’s projectionist, screened beforehand. In 2016, my short documentary The Beatles Boston screened at the Mendon Twin Drive-In as part of their Beatle Night, where it screened along with Ron Howard’s The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years.

That went so well that in 2017, The Beatles Boston returned for the next Beatle Night where it screened with A Hard Days Night and I Wanna Hold Your Hand. One of the coolest documentaries about drive-ins was 2017′s At the Drive-In, about a PA drive-in.

It seems like now is the time for what was once considered a relic of a bygone era is now being looked at as the safest and best way to see a movie right now. With so many Hollywood movies either being re-scheduled for release or going to VOD, 2020 is going to be a very different type of year for film. But the one movie all eyes are on right now is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which as of this writing is still scheduled for a July 17 release. I may try to go see it at a drive-in when its released. Until then, let’s raise a glass to one of the coolest ways to see a movie that is finally being appreciated by the masses.

On June 6, 1933, the first drive-in movie theater flickered to life, in Camden, New Jersey. That’s why today is National Drive-in Movie Day. By the summer of 1958, Americans had their choice of 4,038 cinemas under the stars. That summer proved to be the zenith. TVs, VCRs, Nintendos, Netflix: The next half-century of distractions helps explain the decline. But drive-ins, they haven’t played their last reel. In fact, the pandemic led to a resurgence, with pop-ups sprouting up to satisfy the quarantine-weary. And how about this bit of news: The United Drive-in Theatre Owners Association counts 318 drive-ins as of September 2021, up by one from three years earlier. I’m blessed to live in a state, New York, with the most drive-in theaters, at 29. Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, and North Dakota have none. (No surprise about Alaska!) The remaining 44 states have at least one. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve photographed on the road over the years: First up is the Googie sign for the Malta Drive-in in Malta, New York, truly a showstopper. The theater turns 73 on July. 1 No. 2 is the Dixie Twin Drive-in in Dayton, Ohio, which opened July 12, 1957, with movies starring Andy Griffith and Jerry Lewis. Our third stop is the Circle Drive-in in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where a film celebrating drive-in culture is playing just as I post this! The fourth is the Mahoning Drive-in in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, itself immortalized in a documentary. We stay in Pennsylvania for No. 5 and the Garden Drive-in in Hunlock Creek, which like many drive-ins doubles as a flea market, like No. 6, Cape Cod’s The Wellfleet. No. 7 is the Hi-Way Drive-in in Coxsackie, New York, which actually added a fourth screen in 2011. No. 8 was said to be the last drive-in west of Oklahoma on Route 66, the Foothill in Azuza, California, until closing in 2001. I shot the marquee in 2014. No. 9 is the former Moonlite Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, which when I visited last year was hosting live theater. Finally, No. 10 is a remnant of the Twin Hi-Way Drive-in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. The snack bar is no more, but we are reminded that you are the snack! #retrologist (at United States of America) https://www.instagram.com/p/CefGPv-rv6K/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Movie tickets at many theaters will cost just $3 on National Cinema Day
Movie tickets at many theaters will cost just $3 on National Cinema Day Movie tickets at many theaters will cost just $3 on National Cinema Day National Cinema Day has 3,000 participating theaters so far. | Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images Movie tickets across the US will cost just $3 on Saturday, September 3rd in celebration of National Cinema Day (via Associated Press). If you’ve never heard of such a holiday before (at least in the US), that’s because it never existed until now, apparently. The $3 ticket price (not including tax) applies across all tickets, formats, and showtimes — and yes, this includes IMAX and 3D movies. So far, a growing list of 3,000 theaters, including popular chains, like Regal, Cinemark, and AMC, have agreed to take part in the new holiday. You might not want to count out your local, independently-run theaters, either. In a list of participating theaters viewed by The Verge, we spotted several smaller locations, like the Starmax Cinemas in Vandalia, Illinois, and the Wellfleet Cinema drive-in (a personal favorite) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. You can find out if theaters near you are participating by entering your location on the National Cinema Day website. Participating theaters will also show a “special sneak peek” of upcoming movies from various studios, including Disney, Universal, Lionsgate, Paramount, Warner Bros., and more. The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit organization created by the National Association of Theatre Owners earlier this year, came up with National Cinema Day as a way to encourage people to return to the theaters. Labor Day weekend is a notoriously slow time for movie theaters due to a lack of new releases, but perhaps National Cinema Day could help change that. I, personally, haven’t seen a movie in theaters since 2019’s Joker, so maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me it’s time for a trip to the theaters. Movie theaters took a pretty big hit during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and have also contended with a hybrid release model that has some movies hitting theaters and streaming services the same day. Last year, theaters signed deals with studios like Warner Bros., Paramount, and Disney to promise periods of in-theater exclusivity for certain films (although they’re much shorter than what they’ve been in the past). But this summer had an impressive number of people returning to theaters, thanks to blockbusters like Thor: Love and Thunder and Jordan Peele’s horror film Nope. According to data from Comscore, this summer’s box office raked in $3.027 billion, a 134.6 percent increase when compared to last summer. The imminent return of the Moviepass subscription could perhaps play a role in getting people back to theaters in the future, too (potentially to the dismay of theaters). “After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” Jackie Brenneman, the Cinema Foundation’s president said in a statement. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.” https://ift.tt/kdEZMhb https://ift.tt/tNMwK5R

A Favorite Trip
Last July we were fortunate to be able to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday in Cape Cod. We rented an AirBNB in Wellfleet, which was a beautiful location not too far from Provincetown. This was our first AirBNB experience, which made me realize that hotels are a huge waste of money! Not only did we have a safe place to stay in a prime location, but we had more luxuries than a typical hotel stay. We had a private entrance with the family living in a different part of the home than where we were. It was quiet and private. The hosts left us several pages of information on the area including their favorite places to eat and things to do. We also were provided with a fridge, coffees, and teas. Our room was clean and comfortable.
If you are interested in staying where we stayed, it was The Comet Room at Packet Port Villa. Hosted by Suzannah and Russell.
The first place we ate was my favorite. It was The Bookstore & Restaurant. The oysters were so good, and you could watch people pulling up oysters in the water just across the street.
Tumblr media
We had the pleasure of visiting a local store called Maurice's Market where they gave us a coupon to go to the drive in movie theatre. This was my first time at a drive in movie, super cool!
Tumblr media
We hung out at the beach of course! Marconi beach was our favorite, and we loved The Beachcomber which was a bar/eatery right on the beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we checked out P-Town which was like this busy city in the middle of a quiet beach area!
