What are five songs that encapsulate GreatMage and why? šŸ˜ŠšŸ˜ŠšŸ˜Š
Oh man, this is such a tough question, but so fantastic because thereā€™s so many gorgeous songs that could work well for our little sweethearts. To try and make things a little easier on myself lol, I stuck mostly to songs that Iā€™ve already used for chapters in Next Time I Fall, and Iā€™ll tell you a bit about each oneā€¦ but this is gonna get long (as everything I write tends to do lol) so Iā€™ll put it under a readmore line.
Hold On to the Nights (Richard Marx) - this one perfectly sums up the beginning of their relationship when El was still with Mike. Itā€™s a gorgeous song full of just pure longing, yearning, to be with someone who isnā€™t able to be with you. Also, fun fact! The first hints of GreatMage appeared in a chapter in Little Help titled ā€œdo we break another ruleā€, which is a lyric from this same song.

Head Over Feet (Alanis Morissette) - this is the only one not used in NTIF, because I ended up going with ā€˜this oneā€™s for youā€™ instead, but Head Over Feet was a very close runner up for that chapter. I thought it was perfect to describe Elā€™s eye-opening summer of 1987, as she slowly realized that her old feelings for Mike had long since faded away but a love for Gareth was steadily growing in its place, and that her relationship with Gareth would be much different and better. One line even says ā€œIā€™ve never felt this healthy beforeā€, and that just kinda summed up the whole vibe I wanted for them, for El especially, realizing that a good boyfriend should make her feel better about herself and not worse.
Wildflower (Skylark) - absolutely the perfect song to sum up the way Garethā€™s love for El grew after he found out about Hawkins Lab and everything sheā€™d been through in the past. Itā€™s a beautiful story of admiration and affection for someone whoā€™s been through a lot but didnā€™t let it break them. The chorus seems to express that he sees her for exactly who and what she is, and wants only the best for her.

Longer (Dan Fogelberg) - Spoiler alert! This is the song Iā€™m planning to use for chapter 22! I adore this song because it gives sweet and cozy vibes of a relationship thatā€™s stood the test of time and will continue standing forever. And in the Lostsoul Universeā„¢ we definitely believe in forever love and happy endings.

i've been trying to write but i've had the worst writer's block for literally 3 years now. if you experience it, how do you overcome it?
hi anon! i'm so sorry you're struggling with this, especially for so long šŸ˜” i know how demoralizing it can feel to feel 'stuck', or unhappy with anything you manage to get out. i can't promise that i have all the answers, but here are some different strategies that often help me!
fill the well
i think i stole this term from 'the artist's way' but i can't actually remember if her definition is the same as mine, so. when eye say filling the well, what i mean is: i take a purposeful break from attempting to create content, and i consume. i eat eat eat whatever i can get my hands on. poetry, books, music, movies. i go to an art museum, or go see a live performance of something, if i can!
i find that getting myself out of my own head and fully invested in someone else's creations tends to get my wheels turning. and it's therapeutic, that feeling of discovering some piece of art that speaks to you and reminds you that you're a human. it helps reconnect me to the purpose of why i create, the way i strive to give someone else that same experience by writing stories that i hope people can see themselves reflected back in. seriously - consume stuff! NEW stuff! go out there and find a thing that you love that someone else created.
box yourself in
this is a strategy i had never really tried before until last year, when i was struggling with wicked "i hate everything i write" syndrome, and the love of my life @gimmethatagustd gave me this tip! it's so weird, but it worked for me, so maybe it'll work for you too! they said that as someone who had to write a lot for school, even when they were blocked as fuck, that sometimes they would assign themselves specific rules or prompts for a piece in order to switch things up~
maybe for you, this looks like churning out a few drabbles, and forcing yourself to make them EXACTLY 100 words long. maybe it's writing something only in dialogue (a thing i actually did once when super blocked lmao!). maybe it's trying a new genre, maybe it's trying to write ~in the style~ of someone else, maybe it's writing member POV if that's not something you normally do. maybe it's looking up specific writing prompts/challenges, or playing some weird game with yourself where you try to fit song lyrics into a piece, or make each new sentence start with the last letter of the sentence before it - i don't know! get crazy with it! don't ask me why, but sometimes giving yourself more rules to adhere to makes it easier to write - or just gives your brain something else to focus on, at least šŸ¤Ŗ
show up anyway
i hate that sometimes, this is what works, but it's the truth. stephen king has said a lot of things (including many racial slurs lol šŸ„“) but one of the not-dumb things he's said is along the lines of: "don't wait for the muse. ...your job is to make sure the muse knows where you're going to be every day from nine 'til noon. or seven 'til three. if he does know, i assure you that sooner or later he'll start showing up."
sometimes, writing is showing up, putting down crap, hating it, and doing it anyway. (this might go along with #2 - maybe your drabbles suck! write them anyway!) turning on the tap and running it until all the junk in your pipes gets out and the water runs clear. it sucks! when i'm in a place where that's all i can do, it's the worst feeling in the world! but there have been times where i've found that my "writer's block" was just me wanting things to come easily, like they do in a moment of fresh inspiration. and sometimes, you don't have inspiration. sometimes, you don't even have motivation. you gotta be disciplined and just do it anyway, and just keep shaking your brain like a piggy bank until something good eventually comes out of it.
rest. but like, actually rest
"but m! you just told us to push through and do it anyway!" okay, yeah, well. sometimes that works, but also, brains suck, and sometimes it doesn't work. if none of the above strategies have worked, or i'm stressing myself out so much that i'm like, actively bursting into tears over writing, that's when i know i need to rest.
there's this idea that i actually use a LOT in life - and not even exclusively about writing. when i have a friend who is struggling to get something done, and i ask them "did you rest?" and they tell me they did, i like to fire back: "did you actually rest, or did you spend the entire time feeling guilty about how you weren't doing X thing?"
guilt, as it turns out, is not rest. thinking about how much you wish you were writing is not rest. worrying about how you'll never be able to write anything good ever again... is also not rest! when i know i'm burnt out, i give myself a timeframe - it can be anywhere from 48 hours to several weeks, depending on severity - and i make a promise to myself: for that time, it is ILLEGAL to think about writing, to feel bad about writing, to want to write, or to even so much as TOUCH a word processor. AGAINST THE LAW, YOU HEAR ME?
i force myself to do anything else. if i feel like being creative, i'll pursue non-writing avenues to do so. but if i don't? i'll do fuck all. i'll watch a season of a terrible reality show. i'll take naps on my couch. i'll eat ice cream or do a puzzle or read a book or learn a language or whatever else. but i don't touch my writing, i don't think about my writing and i do not feel bad about my writing, or lack thereof.
usually, by the time my sentence in anti-writing jail is up (the only kind of prison i believe in lmao āœŒļø) my energy levels feel restored, my outlook is more positive, and i'm chomping at the bit to get back to it, with a renewed sense of appreciation for my work and my ideas. sometimes you just need to take a break, a real break, and that's okay!
accept it
sort of a continuation of my last one - and i know this sounds kinda dire, but i'm saying this with only love: not every season can be a season of harvest. there are some seasons where the ground is frozen, and nothing can grow. we cannot always be making all of the time. some seasons of life are for other things instead. healing, changing, starting over. i went through a years-long period of really wanting to write, but never managing to get words out when i tried. and guess what? it came back to me, eventually. but for a long time, i had to just... not write. and go live my life. and the world kept turning.
banging your head against the wall when it's not coming out won't solve anything. if you've tried it all, and it's still not happening? it might not be your time right now. and you might be doing yourself more harm than good by trying to force what's not, in this moment, meant to be. so deep breaths. chin up. know that it is okay to move on to the next season, and trust that it will come back when the time is right. life is long. nothing is forever, good or bad. there is so much more out there for you. infinite possibilities. i really do believe that!

Ok, update on Na'vi language in FoP!
I just got to a point in the story with a new cutscene featuring actual spoken Na'vi dialogue, the first one I've seen since the opening. It featured a snippet of a Sarentu song along with a brief conversation.
I'll start with the conversation because with the exception of one word I'm pretty confident I've transcribed it correctly:
Player: Sa'nu? Mommy?
Kataru: Nga lumpe lu txen nƬmun, ma 'evi? Zene hivahaw! Why are you awake again, kiddo? You must sleep!
Player: Tsmuke peseng? Where sister?
Kataru: Aha'ri wrrkolƤ fte [lima?] sivunu por. Aha'ri went out to enjoy the moot.
Kataru: Sunu ngar oey waytelem kefyak! You like my songcord, huh?
Kataru: Trro layu ngaru lora waytelem agim fte vurit ngeyƤ piveng. Someday you will have a long beautiful songcord to tell your story.
Fairly straightforward. The only bit I'm unsure about is in that fourth line there's a word I'm not familiar with; based on the subtitles I assume it refers to what the characters call the "moot" in English (hence the translation) but idk what the actual Na'vi word is supposed to be. Sounds like "lima" but I can't be sure...might be something we have to wait for a vocab update from KP for šŸ˜…
The other bit of spoken Na'vi we got in this scene was a snippet of a Sarentu song sung by Kataru. I am not particularly confident about this transcription, but this is my best guess for the time being.
Awnga lu Sarentu, Eywaru si kƬte'e. Ngar awnga yivora'. 'ite rutxe... We are Sarentu, we serve Eywa. We win to you (for you?). Daughter, please....
"Awnga lu Sarentu" is pretty obvious lol, but the rest of it, like I said, I'm unsure about, for these reasons:
Eywaru si kƬte'e: the syllables don't quite match with that last word; it sounds more like "kƬt'a" but that's not a word (as far as we know). The meaning of kƬte'e si (with the si part flipped around, which is usually not allowed but can happen in songs and poetry) makes sense though, and I couldn't find another (known) word that fits closer, so I'm going with this for now.
Ngar awnga yivora': on this one the sounds seem to fit very well, the grammar just feels a little funky ("win to you"?) BUT, as mentioned in the previous bit, songs and poetry can play a little loose with grammar so idk.
'ite rutxe: Similar to the above, the sounds fit moderately well but grammar is holding me up (if I'm hearing the words right, there should technically be a ma in there since the daughter is being addressed. But, of course, song/poetry loose rules so ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ).

...all that said, I could be totally wrong about these!! It's just my current best guess. Maybe later KP will give us the official lyrics like he did for Neytiri's songcord ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ
sooooo that's all for the spoken Na'vi/actual Na'vi dialogue so far! I'm glad to report that I'm still pretty impressed with it on that front!...however, there are just a few issues with some of the written Na'vi that sometimes crops up as names etc., so lemme just correct those real quick:
"ma'yawntu", something the character Nefika says a lot, should be spelled ma yawntu (two separate words, no tƬftang). The voice actress pronounces it correctly, it's just spelled wrong in the subtitles for some reason (and this particular misspelling is such a fanfic level mistake that I'm really kinda annoyed it's in here but šŸ˜… w/e)
The name "Eetu", based on how the characters pronounce it, should be spelled Itu. Even if we're assuming a dialect that allows doubled vowels (Reef does, Forest does not), "Eetu" in Na'vi would be pronounced "eh-eh-tu" (three syllables, with each e sounding like the word "set"), NOT "ee-tu" (two syllables with the double e sounding like "see".
The name "P'asuk" should be spelled Pasuk (no tƬftang). "P'asuk" is not even pronounceable (remember that tƬftang is an actual letter that affects pronunciation, not just a cool decoration that can be sprinkled in anywhere for āœØaestheticāœØ).
On which note, last but not least (for now), the clan name Zeswa should also not be spelled with a tƬftang. This one's inconsistent; some places spell it correctly while others (even within the same page!) throw in an illegal tƬftang for some reason (Zes'wa).
That's all for now, will add more if and when there is more to add!
so I started playing the new Frontiers of Pandora game last night, and was pleasantly surprised that not only did the opening cutscene feature a few lines of spoken Na'vi dialogue, but said dialogue was actually pretty accurate!! Good job game!!

My personal/deep analysis on Harryā€™s House:
Music for sushi restaurant: This lyrics screams Japan to me lol!! Just a little happy song. I literally donā€™t know what to say about this song because it just screams domesticity to me.
Late Night Talking: Lyrics parallel-ā€œStaying out 'til sunrise, Share a single bed and tell each other what we dream aboutā€. Another Love Song. I guess when they were in their early age of One Direction, they really did question where they were going and hence the late night talking. ā€œAnd when I'm down I need somebody to talk toā€ - ā€œIf youā€™re feeling down, I just wanna make you happier babyā€. These lyric parallels had me.
Grape Juice: This song feels like what they did in their lockdown period. Just sitting and thinking about all the memories and places they have been together. Bringing flowers is such a romantic gesture for me and harry is a sucker for romance. 1982 screams LARRY. The outro beats for this song are lit. Makes me hooked up.
Daylight: New York, antidote, blue bird, Iā€™d fly to you. So many references to HS1, Fine Line and IICF. Gives me the vibes when theyā€™re two weeks rule away, thatā€™s how Harry feels towards louis missing him, if he was spoon, he would stick to him like honey. Reading horoscope.
Little Freak: Too many kitchen references in this whole album. ā€œStay green a little while, You bring blue lights to dreamsā€-he literally wrote their eye colours back to back. His penmanship is offensive. Jealous Harry is verse 2 oh my god had me laughing whenever I listen to it. I always think Louis makes fun in a good way about Harry and his healthy ways and that is written so well at the end of verse 2. Just had me thinking about Louis all the time when Harry is the one singing.
Matilda: This is a sad song and both rock and acoustic guitar are blended so well together. I feel this feels to me like when all the 5 boys were moved out of home early age and were global superstar, and there are things and time where the family celebrates good news and one of the boys are not home and vice versa. Itā€™s like you canā€™t always have everything, you need to let go of somethings that are just out of your hand. This is really a deep song with deep lyrics and have deep meaning.
Cinema: Remember when Harry said ā€œLouis is great to just sit and watchā€. I think cinema song that way. Like the link is when we have a comfort movie and we want to watch it again and again irrespective of the mood, I can relate the same to cinema. In this song cinema turns out to be a comfort person whom he can rely on. A pining song where he just wonders if heā€™s cool.
Daydream: A love song which is a bop. In She, thereā€™s a lyrics ā€œShe lives in daydreams with meā€ which i can think is a spin off for this.
Keep Driving: The verse 1 and 2 just seems like mundane things they do together daily. The chorus seems like the problems/fights in their life that they overcame together. The bridge screams their time in One Direction. This is one of the favourite songs. Love how Harry just took random daily used words and make them into a song.
Satellite: Gonna give you all the space and time in the world for you, but iā€™ll stay here for you to just come to me me and talk away. These are the vibes I get from the song.
Boyfriends: I liked the coachella version especially the acapella part. This could be spin-off of half the world away. He could be reflecting the lyrics on him
Love of my life: A perfect song to end the album. The beats and production are so elite. The beautiful penmanship of their life together is so elite. The outro beats are same used in trailer of HS3 and thatā€™s what stands out for me.

Ages ago, I asked people to send me scenes they wanted me to compared across the Skams, and then I kinda ignored it. This wasn't intentional, but rather because I wanted to do the scenes in chronological order. And the one I got for s1 was the Eva/Jonas breakup scene.
The issue is that Jonas is a very misunderstood character in international fandom. I felt like I couldn't begin to compare the scenes without getting into the fundamental conflict between Eva and Jonas, and I couldn't do that without getting into why Jonas hates Russetide, and I couldn't do that without a long post that was going to swallow up whole the other 7 versions of the scene.
I've never really let go of the idea of doing those comparisons, even though the anons that sent the original asks are probably long gone. I thought of a bunch of different ways to approach the asks, but nothing worked for me. Until recently, where I just decided to first explain Russetide, then compare the different Skam opening speeches, and THEN I will finally compare the breakup scenes.
But instead of explaining Russetide itself, which I think most Skam fans more or less understand, I'm going to explain SJEIKEN 2015. This song perfectly encapsulates what Jonas hates about Russetide. In fact, he quotes it in one of the scenes where he's being a dick to Eva!

Russetide is a tradition in all of Norway, but western Oslo (where Skam is set) is one of the richest areas in the country and, as such, they really go above and beyond with it. A bus is better than a van, the buses have to be decked out with the best sound systems. The crew has to have not just hoodies but also headbands and other merch, and it all has to follow the theme the crew has chosen. And if you really are the hottest of hot shit, then you actually commission legit artists to write a theme song for your bus. We can see this in s2, where the girls discuss The Penetrators theme song.
There are a bunch of different Norwegian artists that you can commission for your Russe song, but the most famous are probably TIX and the PĆøssy Project. The PĆøssy Project is a group of multiple songwriters, but all of its members have chosen to keep their identites anonymous because, as it turns out, ~Norwegian adults~ think everything I'm about to explain is trashy and disdainful. The one artist in The PĆøssy Project that has always owned his participation in it is Andreas Haukeland, better known as TIX. (You might also know him as this year's ESC entry for Norway.) Why does TIX stand by these songs? Idk, probably because they're extremely popular, chart well, and make money, and by standing by them, he gets to perform them in gigs and profit off those creations.
SJEIKEN 2015 has featured twice in Skam, first in s1e1. It's also the song Pepsi Max is singing when they party at Sana's place in s4. And SJEIKEN 2015 featured so prominently in Skam because the song became a runaway hit the year before (the 2014-15 school year), breaking into the Norwegian charts as well as Spotify most playeds in Norway. It is a tremendously popular song that people loved.

So, who or what is SJEIKEN 2015 about? SJEIKEN is a 2015 Russe crew (meaning they graduated high school in 2015) who chose to make their Russe theme about... oil sheikhs. That is what sjeiken means. The song itself is about an oil sheikh called Sheikh Yer Bouti who declares tonight to be free of rules. His 400 wives are allowed to get drunk and be whores, just for tonight. Here are the lyrics:

Now, TIX has recently tried to become a mature artist, and so he was recently asked about SJEIKEN 2015 (again, a song he performs to this day). This was his response:
At a party, I met a girl who was crying over a boy she liked. She had built up her expectations that this would be the night she finally hooked up with him, but she was afraid that if she did, the guys would call her "whore". I thought about it a bitā€¦ It's actually quite true - if a boy hooks 10 girls at a party he is a legend, but if a girl hooks up with only one boy she may risk being called loose. That's absolutely ridiculous! So I said to her, "Tonight you are allowed to be a whore. Tonight you are allowed to hook up with him.ā€
And like, I just want to say this response is horseshit, first of all lol. But in case you for some reason thought this was supposed to be like a feminist anthem for a girls' russe buss (a crew like Los Losers for instance), let me share a picture of the SJEIKEN Russe crew:

(The one thing I can say about this is that the boy playing a niqabi doesn't appear to have taken it off at any point, which is better than Skam Italia did.)
At this point, you might think that perhaps Jonas might have reason to be appalled that Eva, who he assumed shared his values, decided to get involved in Russefeiring. However, one other thing about Russefeiring is that literally EVERY YOUNG PERSON in Norway is supposed to love all of this shit. My evidence is very anecdotal, but I once asked a Norwegian high school student how many people aren't involved in Russefeiring. He said everyone is, the only people who aren't are the friendless losers. I also came across a Norwegian young woman's blog who said she preferred talking to people from abroad, because she didn't have to explain to them that she never actually did Russe, because to admit she hadn't, would immediately show her to have been a total outcast in high school. Like, this is an issue for people into their twenties.
So Jonas isn't just taking a stance to be cool, the fact that he is vocally opposed to Russefeiring in every way makes him (and the boy squad) total losers. In fact, Chris Schistad referred to Jonas as a nerd and the boy squad plainly wasn't in William's radar at all. It wasn't a thing like in Skam NL, where Kes' squad was leagues and miles above Noah's squad in terms of coolness (MOTHERfucker... don't even try to tell me Gijs was cooler than Kes lmao). Jonas would've been seen as a loser and a burnout, and that's what Jonas was talking about when he told Eva that she was always doing the popular thing to do. Because he very staunchly refused to participate in this tradition, despite the fact that doing so made him an outcast, because, for him, THAT was the moral thing to do.
Having read all this (you poor soul), and being on tumblr like you are, is it really that unthinkable that Jonas would think that Russefeiring and the culture associated with it is crap? Do you really think a 16-year old has the nuance to say, "you know, Russefeiring stands for everything I hate, but since you're friendless because of me, and this is your chance at having friends, I will put my ideals aside and support you in this." Absolutely not lmao. How many of you would even now shit on friends if they stepped outside the line of what tumblr considers woke? How many people on twitter turn on each other for transgressions like stanning the wrong Skams? Jonas was shitty because he was super rigid in what he considered the right way to behave, but in that sense, he was actually one of the most accurate portrayals of a specific type of Gen Z. Unlike idk, characters who quote fucking Animal Farm to talk about school festivals.
(And NOW that all of that has been established, I can finally begin dissecting season 1 lol.)

I have several songs for them -most of which I forgot bc I haven't saved them anywhere LOL- but I just stumbled about this performance on YT and it's perfect for them, especially since it can work from both their POVs.
Mira/Al - Torna A Casa
What can I say, I mostly listened to Italian music lately in order to try and learn a bit more of the language and there are a lot of great songs out there. But this one just hits me hard and I find it very well-suited for Mira and Al, although for spoiler-y reasons xDD
Now, my newest ship consists of 4 people, so fiding a song to fit all of them proved...impossible so far šŸ˜‚ Instead, I decided to give each dynamic a song.
Idalia/Ovi - Paper Rings
Not a 1:1 fit with the lyrics, but the sound is perfect for them. I also get the vibe of the love story as being between two people that have a lot in common, you just wouldn't know that by simply looking at them. The lines "I like shiny things/ But I'd marry you with paper rings" fit Idalia/everyone, really, but since I have better songs for the other Idalia dynamics, this went here by default.
Idalia/Cesare - Viceversa
Remember what I said about Italian music? Yeah, well, I think Idalia and Cesare's relationship might actually have been inspired by this very song, I just didn't realize it until now. Anyway, 100% perfect for them even if they aren't always as tooth-rottingly sweet as this song implies. But they are one of the sweetest couples I wrote, probably because they are the only childhood friends to lovers I have. And I think it's telling that I can only write this kind of dynamic as part of a polyamory :))
Idalia/Selina - Boyfriend
This entire song sums up exactly what was going through Selina's head the first time she saw Idalia together with Cesare. How could I not put it here?! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£
Selina/Cesare - Dall'alba al tramonto
Considering both Selina and Cesare have deep trust issues -of which they aren't really aware of- this song is perfect for them. There are also a couple other lyrics that totally fit, but for spoiler-y reasons.
Ovi/Cesare - Bad Habits
Probably my least developed dynaimc (there is no woman involved, so...) which made choosing a song for them super hard. However Bad Habits gives me the vibe of "spy falls in love with the mark" which is kinda how Ovi met the rest of the band. And I do think Cesare was the first one with whom he ~crossed the line into unprofessional teritory hehe.
Selina/Ovi - If You Love Me For Me
A part of me wanted to search for something else, but I don't think I can find a song that showcases Selina's POV better than this one. Surprisingly, out of the entire group, Selina/Ovi are def the most unlikely pair for a list of reasons and falling for each other took both of them by surprise. Also, again, considering the circumstances they met under -read above- this adds an air of irony I adore xDD

I'm sorry this is so late, I was super busy šŸ˜… (in other news, I've achieved 3 major things that I'm so relieved about) Since I don't write fanfic, I figured I'd do origami based on fics. Featuring first lines and quotes I like from 4 of the fics I've recently read that got me through this crazy time + 3 from 1 fic each of the lovely people who tagged me.

Inspired by Vina's ideal cupcake as mentioned in this ask. This is a super sweet fic of 'Potter and his gang' plotting a scheme to help Harry cheer a sad Draco up. I loved how everyone got together to make the plan happen, especially when it was Dean's turn šŸ˜‚ (Also I've literally been binge-reading all of Vina's works and they're great for comfort reading, do check them all out!!)

Summary: Ginny tells herself that she's content with the way things are.
Luna proves her otherwise.
This fic has a special place in my heart. Featuring pining!Ginny, Luna and Ginny having weekly car rides together (which is 1000% my jam), soft and serious conversations, and coming to terms with feelings. The gorgeous description of the scenery and their road journey will make you feel like you're there with the two.
Bonus song suggestion: I loved reading the fic along with listening to the song referenced (Wild Horses), and also a second time with this song (Khaabon ke parinday) which I personally think fits the vibe of the fic really well. Feel free to give either/both a listen while reading if you'd like to!

It is specifically for the vibes of the Calamity Trio! Also, I feel like contributing to fandom, so I tried to explain why I felt each song gave off the ~Vibe~. Apologies for the length of this monstrosity. Itā€™s on YoutubeĀ and Spotify, but there is a song on Youtube I used that was unavailable on Spotify. Itā€™s in no particular order, although maybe Iā€™ll organize it one day.
~ā€˜California Friendsā€™ (The Regrettes)- Generally the fun upbeat vibe of the song, but also these specific lyrics make me think of Anneā€™s :

(also the ā€˜i gotta go but i wanna stay/just stayā€™ definitely reminds me of the end of the aquarium episode)
~ā€™The Archerā€™ (Taylor Swift)- Oh man this song where do I even start?? There is so much?? (I know Iā€™ve already talked about this one, but Imma do it again) I was listening to this song one day and the lyrics hit me so hard as reminding me of all the girls, specifically:

I feel like this is pretty self-explanatory, but this seriously makes me think of her relationship with Sasha -or the shambles of it anyway oof- and the speeches line just makes me thereā€™s so much that she doesnā€™t tell her friends about whatā€™s running through her head.Ā 
Anneā€™s an emotional person to be sure, but sheā€™s also a very impulsive one, which means a lot of times, what people get from her is the unedited, unreflected version of her thoughts, which donā€™t make them any less true, but that also means that sheā€™s probably a little more reticent with the deeper ideals that donā€™t get unearthed through dramatic moments. She just does things a lot of the time, and when she gets stuck on something, it is kinda obvious from the outside, but she also gets uncomfortable with trying to talk about it, because there is no clear solution she can enact in the moment to resolve it.
For Sasha:

As well as the repetition of ā€˜they see right through me/can you see right through meā€™, these lines give me huge Sasha vibes, specifically. I think of them kind of especially applicable to the Reunion episode, but also just how there were a couple scenes where she seemed to be regretting hiding from her friends the toad rebellion that was going to take place in Newtopia, and that conversation Anne and Sasha have in The Third Temple. I donā€™t think she ever considered regretting the rebellion at all, but I do think she worried over what it might do to her friendships.Ā 
The end of Reunion was heartbreaking, for both Anne and Sasha, because if the Plantars had been able to pull both girls up, I think there would have been more opportunity for Sasha and Anne to have a better reconciliation. (i think this about this a lot ngl) And, also because she was willing to die for Anne??? I donā€™t think that gets discussed enough. That episode has big ā€˜who could ever leave meā€™ at the beginning, and then at the end ā€˜who could stayā€™ vibes.Ā 
For Marcy:
Ā  Ā  And all of my heroes die alone (OOF)
As well as
Ā  Ā  Ā All the kingā€™s horses, all the kingā€™s men

Ahahaha this is the ANGST. So. I mean, obviously the kingā€™s horses part makes me think of the ending of True Colors, and I donā€™t think that Marcy considers Sasha and Anne to be her enemies by any stretch of the imagination, but I donā€™t think that Andrias is above manipulating her to think that they think of her that way. (Also the line ā€˜cause all of my enemies started out friendsā€™ line is very applicable to Anne and Sasha as well, it just happened to be part of the lines that made me think of Marcy) Plus sticking around the king and whatever the heck he has in store for her will definitely not put her back together sooo-
The ā€˜help me hold onto youā€™ and the ā€˜Iā€™ve been the archer/Iā€™ve been the preyā€™ just apply to all of them (for the former, think Sasha and Anne in Reunion, the way Marcy tried to mediate in The Dinner, and just True Colors in general; for the latter, it makes me think of the sword-fights between Anne and Sasha, as well as how Marcy once believed that Andrias actually cared about her). The ā€˜Dark side, I search for your dark side/But what if Iā€™m alright, right, right, right hereā€™ make me think of how Anne is going to be reevaluating her friendships with both Sasha and Marcy, as well as how all of them seemed to grow into the Amphibia communities that they landed in and what they are going to struggle with leaving behind.
I had this song on loop for way too long trying to word my feelings out about it.
~ā€™Soldier, Poet, Kingā€™ (Oh Hellos)- This song is just so absolutely perfect for the three girls. Iā€™d like to take the time to state that I think Sasha fits soldier, Marcy poet, and Anne king, but what are yā€™allā€™s thoughts?Ā 
Ā  Ā  Ā There will come a soldier/Who carries a mighty sword
Ā  Ā  Ā He will tear your city down
Big Sasha vibes, fits with whatā€™s she done so far in the show, as well as how sheā€™s being set up for the third season to be a hero (whose intentions somewhat align with the consequences of her actions).
Ā  Ā  There will come a poet/Whose weapon is his word
Ā  Ā  He will slay you with his tongue
Marcy spends a lot of time journaling, and she even takes the time to learn a dead language! She seems rather skilled with more traditional weaponry, but her biggest boon is her intelligence and her quick-thinking. I also think that if she does end up getting possessed by the Night, its words being spoken by Marcyā€™s voice is absolutely going to SLAUGHTER Anne and Sasha.
Ā  Ā  Ā There will come a ruler/Whose brow is laid in thorn
Ā  Ā  Ā Smeared with oil like Davidā€™s boy
Apart from the fact that Anne literally has plants growing from her head in the S2 finale, she is also a charismatic leader who has made connections all over Amphibia. She genuinely cares about the people around her, and takes the time to get to know them and spend time with them. Also, a lot of times, she is underestimated and seen as the David to her opponentā€™s Goliath- whether that be physically or in skillset.
~ā€™Someone To Youā€™ (The Banners)- No specific lyrics here, but the general vibe of the song. There is a sort of desperation that seems to permeate it, as though if the narrator isnā€™t someone to the person they are singing to, they will be nobody at all, and I think that is very much how all of the girls view their friendship, at least at first.Ā 
Marcy gets the music box thing going because she doesnā€™t want to be alone; Sasha is desperate to have Anne, and she wants so much for both Anne and Marcy to look up to her as someone who is strong and present. I think for Anne, we kinda see this song in the speech she gives to Sprig in Best Fronds when sheā€™s trying to get him to break the rules with her, but also in how she is open to reconciling with Sasha in The Dinner and giving her a second chance. Mainly, though, what I associate with Anne for this song are the scenes where she reunites with Marcy and Sasha for the first time. The spinning hug she gives Sasha, and how tightly she hugs Marcy with tears in her eyes- she really does love and care about these girls.
They all cling to this friendship so much, in different ways, both healthy and unhealthy, and I think this song really captures that.
~ā€™Lost Girlsā€™ (Lindsey Stirling)- This song is mostly instrumental, so again, no specific lyrics here, but there is a very deep, melancholic feel to this song. It gets kinda fast-paced at some points, and reminds me of the ending of True Colors, with Anne and Sasha and Marcy separated. There is so much space- literal and internal- between all of them now, and I think this song does a really great job of getting Those Feels across. They arenā€™t just lost to each other, they are also struggling with battles inside of themselves.
But the lyrics that are in this song, (lol I just said I wouldnā€™t mention them whoops) ā€˜Lost girls find a wayā€™, are sung, the music played after them that plays remind me that, like Matt Braly said, sometimes things have to be broken to be fixed again. They can find a way. Itā€™s not a happy song to be sure, but thereā€™s a quiet strength and determination in it.
~ā€™Long Liveā€™ (Taylor Swift)- I could cite specific lyrics here, but this song has just always given me epilogue-end-of-the-battle scenes, where we get to see everyone exhausted, but happy and most importantly together. This song is what Iā€™m hoping the future gets to be for Marcy, Anne, and Sasha; happy about their present together, being able to heal despite the past, and accepting that even if they arenā€™t together forever in the future, that doesnā€™t mean they werenā€™t important to one another.
~ā€™Torchesā€™ (Oh Hellos)- ā€˜Torchesā€™, on the complete opposite hand to ā€˜Long Liveā€™, kind of represents where the girls are right now with one another.Ā 
Despite keeping that old wheel turning, despite laying that next spoke down (yes these are direct lyric references), they are also continuing to make mistakes with one another.

~ā€™Troubleā€™ (Valerie Broussard)- Though I will forever associate this song with Six of Crows thanks to a fabulous animatic, I will say that it also makes me think of the darker tone that Season 3 might take on, and how each girl is poised to take on a different problem. I see it as a very Sasha song (especially ā€˜Iā€™m your Number Two man in a fight/We are revolutionaries tonightā€™), but all three of them tend to lead a trail of chaos in their wake. (Also the vibes here are impeccable)
~ā€™Time Aliveā€™ (K.C Katalbas)- (not on Spotify, definitely recommend checking it out) This song just has that perfectly nostalgic, yet aspirational feel to it. It is hopeful, yet it it has its own sort of weight. It pairs nicely with ā€˜Long Liveā€™ and ā€˜Castle On The Hillā€™, in a way, I think. It makes me think of what the future could be for the girls, once again, and how even if something is bittersweet, you are still allowed to be hopeful. Mostly, it makes me think of each girl reflecting about one another, and the time they spent together.Ā

Particularly, I am reminded of how Sasha and Anne will be feeling about Marcy.

If ā€˜Troubleā€™ has Sasha vibes, this one makes me think of Anne, but it also has a similar line to ā€˜Time Aliveā€™- this is your life. For the most part of Amphibia, I think the girls focussed a lot on fitting in and adapting to their surroundings, but I think Season 3 is really going to see them owning who they are and taking it upon themselves to enact change.Ā 
It also just makes me think of them messing around and being kids, trying to figure out who they are. Itā€™s like, if they ever make it back to Earth in one piece and stay friends, but still manage to get into shenanigans.
~ā€™Whatā€™s Up Dangerā€™ (Blackway, Black Caviar)- local newt king gets mauled by three newly empowered thirteen-year olds
~ā€™How Far Weā€™ve Comeā€™ (Matchbox Twenty)- This one is a classic. No playlist of mine is worth its salt if it doesnā€™t have this song here. It has the ~vibes~ of pre-last battle energy, and also I can definitely see Sasha and the Sharps playing it at some point.Ā 
Alternately, this also makes me think of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy finally going home together or reuniting properly after the end of True Colors. Lots of angst either way.
~ā€™We Are Youngā€™ (fun.)- What I picture with this: Anne, Sasha, and Marcy are not entirely reconciled with one another yet, but itā€™s the night before the last battle or somethinā€™, and they still care about one another a lot. This has that energy. Theyā€™re just kids, but theyā€™ll be damned if they donā€™t go out without a fight, and without standing by one anotherā€™s sides.Ā

Slightly more uplifting(?) than ā€˜How Far Weā€™ve Comeā€™, but similar energy, I think.
~ā€™Pump Itā€™ (Black Eyed Peas)- three local teenagers get pumped to cause problems on purpose; montage time. I have no justification for this song, only that it has the vibes of Sasha and Anneā€™s relentless energy and the confidence of Marcy swinging down on a rope she doesnā€™t know will actually hold her weight.Ā 
~ā€™Disaster Heartsā€™ (I Fight Dragons)- I feel like this song is the definition of Mattā€™s tweet about how some things have to be broken to be fixed. It has vibes of the aftermath of a battle, and opening the door to reconciliation and forgiveness. Amphibia has tied these girls together, for better or worse, and I think there is room for them to become better friends and mend their relationships.

The sound of the song gives me huge Marcy vibes, with how it does seem to be almost cheerful? The very last line makes me think a lot about Sasha (ā€˜Learn to love without consumingā€™), but I think a lot of the song is applicable to all the girls in different situations.Ā

From Song to Storyline: Comparing Lordeā€™s ā€œMelodramaā€ Album to Hailey Uptonā€™s Upcoming Journey
Ok I couldnā€™t resist, I made a comment about how Hailey Upton is in her Melodrama era (because yes, Iā€™m an absolute Lorde fanatic) and my loving soulmate @sylviebrettsey mentioned Taylor Swiftā€™s Reputation too, but ALSO how she was unfamiliar with Melodrama so you can thank her for this analysis of why I picked Melodrama as Haileyā€™s season 9 mood! Itā€™s going to be VERY long so Iā€™ll put everything under the cut but I hope you guys like it! (And Sky, I hope you find this Lorde knowledge to be helpful lol. This is going to be very long but I hope itā€™s worth it and convinces someone out there to give the album a listen)
Reputation is an album that feels inherently vengeful in all the best ways. Songs like ā€œGetaway Carā€ and ā€œDonā€™t Blame Meā€ fit Haileyā€™s predicament at the end of season 8 very well, especially in relation to Jay. Those two songs as well as the album in general make for a very intense musical journey and Haileyā€™s been through a lot of intense things so naturally, it seems like theyā€™d fit together. But based on what weā€™ve seen in interviews, I picked Melodrama for Hailey Uptonā€™s season 9 era because that whole album plays with the idea of what happens after.
Lorde mostly talks about the crash that happens after a party when referencing this ā€œafterā€ but it acts a metaphor for being on a high note (a relationship, life, careers, etc.) and then crashing down. Itā€™s a gritty, heart-wrenching album that holds so many similarities to what Haileyā€™s feeling. Coming into season 9, we know she isnā€™t sleeping, she canā€™t eat, thereā€™s guilt eating away at her over what sheā€™s done and over having to be around Kim constantly while keeping her secret. We know sheā€™s clinging onto Jay with this proposal, know sheā€™s going to have this internal torment because she canā€™t tell any of them what happened but Jayā€™s starting to notice somethingā€™s wrong with her and catching on to what happened. So, without further ado, lemme just give you snippets of lyrics from various songs on Lordeā€™s Melodrama album that fit with different parts of Haileyā€™s journeyā€” as well as the unitā€™s journeyā€” going into the new season!
1. ā€œSoberā€

In Sober, Lorde writes and sings about her experience of getting a panic attack at a party (Hence, the ā€œOh God, Iā€™m clean out of air // In my lungs, itā€™s all goneā€ line) but then having to act normal because of social expectations and adds the ā€œPlayed it nonchalantā€ line. In relation to Hailey, this represents her covering her ruse even though itā€™s killing her inside. Then, when we move further down these lyrics, it talks about being alone with the truth and dancing with the truthā€” again, Hailey struggling with the truth of what she did. Then, at the end of this first verse it could almost be seen from Jayā€™s perspective. ā€œIā€™m acting like I donā€™t see // Every ribbon you used to tie yourself to meā€ is SO similar to what Jesse Lee Sofferā€™s been saying in interviews about Jay not knowing if Haileyā€™s proposal was genuine, and also what he and Tracy have said about Haileyā€™s proposal being genuine but also a product of her clinging on to the one good thing in her life.
2. ā€œLiabilityā€

Ah, yes, finally! The best song on the Melodrama album and arguably one of Lordeā€™s best songs ever! She wrote this in the back of a cab about the struggle of trying to love herself and worrying sheā€™s too much for her friends. If thatā€™s not a Hailey Upton sentiment going into this season, I donā€™t know what is! Not only is this applicable to Hailey with the Roy situation but it could also be applied to 8x11 when she was scared that her baggage and trauma around being abused by her father meant she couldnā€™t be with Jay. Also, now that sheā€™s done this huge, massive thing that she has to live with, itā€™ll make it even harder for her to love herselfā€” and for her to consider the fact that maybe, if she was truthful about that night, her friends would still love her anyway.
3. ā€œHomemade Dynamiteā€

Homemade Dynamite, according to Lorde, describes ā€œthe moment when you meet someone at a party and an explosive night followsā€. Again, right off the bat you see motifs of lies vs. truth when sheā€™s saying letā€™s let things come out of the woodworks. It also technically talks about being blind to rules and dreams which is perfect for the finale: Hailey was blind to her dream (because letā€™s be real, thinking she could stop Voight was a fantasy), and Voight was blind to the rules. And just like the song says, itā€™s all bound to blow up on Hailey sooner or later, like homemade dynamite.
4. ā€œSober llā€

I feel like I donā€™t even need to explain my thought process behind this one. Trauma, melodrama, gun fights, terror, horror. ALL OF THESE are key words for what Haileyā€™s been through and will CONTINUE to go through. ā€œTheyā€™ll talk about us, and discover // How we kissed and killed each otherā€ is also applicable to the synopsis about how the FBI is potentially getting involved in discerning what happened to Roy. If they do, it could launch an investigation into the entire unit which could uncover a lotā€” ā€œkisses each otherā€ being the relationship drama that happens within the unit and ā€œkilled each otherā€ being what happened with Roy and Voightā€™s general track record of murdering criminals and covering it up.
5. ā€œWriter In The Darkā€

Ok this first line is pretty much the entire reason I put this section of the song into this post. ā€œI am my motherā€™s child, Iā€™ll love you ā€˜til my breathing stopsā€ is very strongly representative of Haileyā€™s past. She was raised in a household where her mother loved an abusive man and continued to love him even through the abuse of her and her children. Itā€™s traumatizing, sure, but it also explains why Haileyā€™s reaction to shooting Roy was to go home and propose to Jay. She gets that loyalty from her mother, to the point where she could even stay in situations that hurt her (like refusing to leave Voight in the warehouse). But Jay doesnā€™t hurt her, he loves her unconditionally too which is why Hailey would love him until her breathing stopsā€” or until, as it proceeds to say, ā€œā€˜til you call the cops on meā€, which is applicable in a much more literal sense.
6. ā€œSupercutā€

Supercut is probably my personal favourite of Lordeā€™s songs. The buildup is beautiful and the come-down is slow and gradual. Itā€™s the epitome of pop in my opinion. But Hailey most definitely plays that moment over in her head and in her head, she would have done the right thing that night. And maybe sheā€™s hoping the unit (Jay especially) will forgive her for shooting Roy instead of letting it cause a fight. This whole song is about replaying moments of a relationship in your head and changing the scenario so that it plays out as if you did everything right. You wonā€™t always do everything right though, because weā€™re human and make mistakes, but itā€™s more than plausible that Haileyā€™s trying to capture that feeling.
7. Liability (Reprise)

Last but not least, weā€™ve got the reprise for Liability! This oneā€™s a little more generic because itā€™s just the general vibe of the song that fits Hailey and this PD angst so well but honestly ā€œAnd all of the shit that we harbour // Make all the kids in the choir sing, ā€œWoo-hooā€ is very applicable to Hailey because sheā€™s got a lot of baggage going into this new season. ā€œAnd maybe all this is the party // Maybe we just do it violentlyā€ is another line that fits her situation so well. In addition, since Liability is one of the last songs on this album the outro of the song is almost like the absolute rock bottom reached in the journey the album tells. It could easily be compared to if/when Jay finds out about what Hailey did. (Seriously, just imagine Jay saying ā€œyouā€™re not what you thought you wereā€ to Hailey and tell me that wouldnā€™t make you cry! In a good way OR a bad way!)
Anyway, IN CONCLUSION: Melodrama is a twisted, heartbreaking album that fits into Hailey Uptonā€™s upcoming journey in season 9 with the Roy storyline PERFECTLY! If you have time to listen to the albumā€” or at least the songs I mentionedā€” then please do because itā€™s SO worth it. But until then, weā€™re going to be in for quite the angsty ride this season when it comes to Chicago PD and personally, I canā€™t wait to see what they do with it!

1 ā€“ Cheese
BEFORE: Ohh the guitar riff. I am WEAK for guitar in this one. Probably a song Iā€™d play waiting for the traffic light to go green. It has nice, somehow fun beat. But, we definitely could have survived without them naming types of cheese.
AFTER: Heh. A real fuck you in not romantic way.
FINAL: I appreciate the entire idea behind the song. Tho, we still couldā€™ve survived without types of cheese.
2 ā€“ Thunderous
BEFORE: Idk why, but beginning reminds me of Rhythm Ta. Yes Changbineeeeeeey take it away.
Did I hear it right? "Iā€™m not sorry, Iā€™m dirty." Babes, are we okay?
Ah yes, Aussie line being more Aussie with each passing day. OMG THAT LAUGH AT 2:03 YES.
Oh I def heard it right, Iā€™m not sorry Iā€™m dirty. Cool, cool, ok. The rapapapam bought me, seriously.
It has very Kingdom!Ateez sound to it which isnā€™t a bad thing at all, Iā€™m a sucker for Kingdom!Ateez. Butā€¦ I donā€™t know, I miss either more intense build-up or beat drop. That would, like, totally kill me and pay for my burial.
AFTER: Oh. Changbinā€™s part is really, really good. Okay, okay, seriously props to whoever wrote the lyrics. But we really couldā€™ve survived without Iā€™m not sorry, Iā€™m dirty.
Kkundeuri wasseoyo and Gyerani wasseoyo need to have a collab if you know what I mean hehe šŸ˜‰
FINAL: I feel like my precious I.N had so much fun in this one, so I give bonus points. The song is good, the lyrics are bomb, but the sound lacks intensity. I wish they went with a bit harsher tone, the song would be absolute bomb slap then. All in all, I like it.
3 ā€“ Domino
BEFORE: GOING IN STRONG YES. Yeah, goodbye brain, Iā€™ll be going around singing Domino, domino, DOMINO. Yo, that stop and then intense rap at approximately 1:15 is very nice touch.
Donā€™t kill me, but in my very humble opinion, Chanā€™s parts feel a bit out of place in the song.
Ohā€¦ I donā€™t like the pace change starting at 2:40ā€¦
AFTER: Ah, yet another fuck you, Iā€™ll succeed no matter what you say song.
FINAL: Kinda have a feeling it might grow on me after a few days, but right nowā€¦ Hm. I donā€™t know. Maybe one of those songs which need to marinate and which might slap after I come back to them randomly.
4 ā€“ Ssick
BEFORE: Oh, the beginning gives me Ikon vibes, yes please. Okay, okay, this drop at 0:50 is really good, I like it very much.
This song has nice transitions and per se, variety, that maybe previous songs lack. For now, my favourite song. It is repetitive, just like the previous ones, and thatā€™s not a bad thing, but I think this one has the best mix of repetitive and filled with variety in beat.
AFTER: 3rd fuck you haters song? I mean sure, fuck haters, but isnā€™t dedicating 3 songs to them giving them a bit too much attention? This one isnā€™t just about fuck you tho, itā€™s also about being there for your friends and I like that aspect. Itā€™s like fuck you to haters and i wuw you to friends and supporters.
Also very, very, very important and positive part of the lyrics is ā€œOh yeah, I know that I donā€™t have anything special. But, yeah, do you know that I myself am special?ā€ This, boys, girls, rocks and flowers, this is very valuable lesson. You donā€™t have to own something special because you are special by just being. Donā€™t belittle yourself. Even skz is telling you that.
FINAL: From all the fuck you songs this is probably my favorite.
5 ā€“ The View
BEFORE: Awww very summery song, very sweet since the beginning. OH SHIT I AM CRYING WTF?
Fuck, this reminds me of a feeling, if you get me, but I donā€™t know which one? I like it. I LIKE IT SO MUCH. YES. BRING IT ON. BRING ON THE TEARS YES. (i am probably the only person being excited to cry but that says a lot about me sush please).
This is one of the songs Iā€™d LOVE to randomly hear on the radio. Just driving to the beach, vibing you know.
And getting attacked by sudden rap and beat change because why tf not, you know?
AFTER: ā€œClouds like a submarine swimā€ I told you, summer vibes.
Ah, fuck. Here, itā€™s this why I cried. I sensed something in the way they delivered this part of the song and it was this: ā€œThe road in front of me seemed dark ā€˜cause i never ever let it go. Now I feel comfortable, I like it, this feeling and Iā€™ll never ever let it go.ā€ Not to be someone whoā€™ll be like Aha! This is the meaning behind this! but to me this reminds me a lot of feeling stuck with bad self-image, both mentally and physically, and because I said this is like a summer song, my brain immediately goes to all those summers I hated my body and this one being the first summer ever that I didnā€™t actively hate myself. This part of lyrics is for me like finally breaking out of the shell or maybe a better expression, shedding old skin and just leaving it behind, going forward with new, more positive mentality and a sense of liberation.
ā€œI like the view right nowā€ is like 1) i literally like the view (sunset on beach type of vibe), 2) i like looking at you/myself and realising youā€™re feeling comfortable around me/yourself/myself, and/or 3) i like this new view on life I have.
Look, I could literally quote entire song and give in depth analysis of on what level they resonate with me, but I wonā€™t do that. Iā€™ll just say these are one of the best lyrics Iā€™ve ever read and theyā€™re so well combined with music ughhh. And the fact this song came at the right time in my life *insert chefā€™s kiss*
FINAL: I love it. It was really good before I read lyrics and after itā€™s like three times better. One of my faves on the album.
6 ā€“ Sorry, I love you
BEFORE: Nothing special for except for the slight angsty tones I hear. I like it, but nothing crazy. Iā€™d like it to pop up on my playlist occasionally. I think it would be an absolute BOP for me if it was leaning more to the rock genre. Like, a bit slowed down with accent just on guitar and their voices. But, thatā€™s just me always being a sucker for rock ballads. For some reason to me, best ballads and most songs which evoke strong emotion from me are the ones which accentuate the words, the voice and one instrument.
AFTER: Very convinced this song is written by the one who is watching Nevertheless (is it Seungmin? or someone else?). My roommate strongly disagrees with that, but look, I donā€™t make rules, I think, I say.
FINAL: I hate to admit it but itā€™s catchy. Iā€™d love live band version of this ngl.
7 ā€“ Silent Cry
BEFORE: Interesting intro huh. But something doesnā€™t sit with me right with the rest of the song. I donā€™t know what. I really donā€™t.
AFTER: Yeah sure, hit me with depresso lyrics right in the beginning.
FUCK. The lyrics are really killing me.
FINAL: I just canā€™t suffer through music. Lyrics are amazing, but idk, music is so not my style and somehow donā€™t suit the lyrics.
8 ā€“ Secret Secret
BEFORE: WAIT WHY DO I HAVE EMOTIONS ALREADY ITā€™S ONLY BEEN LIKE 10 SECONDS INTO THE SONG. Fuck. Iā€™m on the verge of tears. Imagine listening to this and then Ex I would straight up have emotional breakdown. Yeah, yeah, Iā€™m crying. Leave me alone. The softness, the preciousness, the cuteness, ugh I am brokenā„¢.
AFTER: Yeah, fuck. Iā€™m crying again.The lyrics are killing me.
FINAL: This song makes me very emotional, I am a literal mess right now. Kill me, resurrect me, kill me again.
9 ā€“ Star Lost
Not my type of song. Like, nothingā€™s wrong, itā€™s just so not my type.
10 ā€“ Red Lights
BEFORE: Well, the beat drop for sure slaps. The song reminds me of something, itā€™s either a movie or a song, but I canā€™t remember. And thatā€™s not a bad thing, I just hate the fact I canā€™t remember what it reminds me of.
AFTER: ā€œIā€™m staying up all night again.ā€ I see what you did there, tsch.
ā€œNow tell me you hate me I canā€™t stand you any longer. But I know, you and me, thereā€™s nothing I can do.ā€ this is very good. I like this.
FINAL: This song could be about so many things. Lust, control problems, feeling of losing yourself, not knowing what your stage personality is and what is real you, anxiety, insomnia, depressionā€¦ The thing they really managed to do is achieving a level of intensity. I like the song more after I read the lyrics, but I have to say I thought it would be much, much more intense and in your face. Iā€™ll let it crawl in my mind and heart. Slowly. Hehe.
11 ā€“ Surfinā€™
BEFORE: Iā€™m not a fan of summer. Or summer songs. But this is good. Wtf. Somethingā€™s going on with me lol. I have nothing much to say, I like the song, thatā€™s it hahah.
AFTER: Felix talking about working 24/7 isnā€™t something I thought Iā€™d hear in such a summery song.
ā€œMy head is overheated just like my laptop.ā€ yo Changbin, mood.
FINAL: I hate summer songs, but this one slaps. This is the only summer song Iā€™ll ever love and accept. Absolute bop.

BEFORE: Oh the beginning surely is something. Oh no, no, no, no, no, Iā€™ll cry again. Oh no. Iā€™m dead. Fuck. Iā€™m crying without lyrics, whatā€™s going to happen after I listen with lyrics? Fuck man.

explanations behind my song choice for my 3lsmp playlist under the read more! keep in mind, some of these songs don't really have a reason beyond just... vibes. and that some ideas have changed over time. anyway!

anti-hero ā€” originally added as an etho song, and still applies. with him being prepared to fight & kill for ren + the rest of the red army. also, he tends to be a bit unpredictable and has a very different moral standing from someone like, say, martyn.
kill the sun ā€” fits with the series as a whole, with shifting alliances and friendships, and with people killing and being killed by one another.
special ā€” this ones for all the mfs who didn't pick a side until really late, or were bouncing between factions for a while šŸ’Ŗ. especially for tango, as an example, making friends with someone who he can also consider his enemy, and being completely unsure where he stands in any group, though he wants to have their faith.
villain ā€” this song is just really good for making a mental amv for lmao. it's good for demonstrating differing alliances n sides, n of course that applies here.
oh, death ā€” not a lot of specific thoughts for this, just. yknow, death, vibes, dying for someone, watching your friend die, etc.
6up 5oh cop-out ā€” first of all, I'm just a slut for will wood sometimes. second, a lot of the lyrics on their own could 100% be applied to events in the series (I mean I did use some from it for my etho n tango drawing for funsies) so. it's a strange song but the vibes fit well, in my opinion :]
kill of the night ā€” a bit self explanatory, I think. in a series about trying to outlive, and to eventually kill your friends? no doubt you're going to end up hunting certain people down, hmmm? revenge, n all that. works well for multiple characters, really.
you're gonna go far, kid ā€” impulse. just like. tango, or maybe etho, at impulse. "with a thousand lies and a good disguise, hit em right between the eyes" I meaaan šŸ¤” how is it NOT impulse lmao
kill the lights ā€” once again, killing, death, murder, yknow. good vibes. also people lying and betraying one another, and watching as their friends and enemies die in front of them, people being changed by the events that transpire.. also technically they ARE actors sooo. kill the actor, yknow
mad IQs ā€” mostly this song just slaps (thank you eexer šŸ™) but also the lyrics fit well with the events! death, murder, killing your friends, burning. there is a lot of fire.
go get your gun ā€” works very well for the whole war goin on. one side vs another, fighting and losing allies, fighting to win for their fallen allies, cheating fate if they DO win. also the line "when this is over, we'll raise a glass straight up to the sun" could be seen as like. everyone coming together to be friends once it's all over bc they are!
c'est la vie ā€” it fits well. bad things happen, you lose people, you hurt, karma kicks your ass, but that's just life, and that's the game. c'est la vie.

First Lines Tagging Meme

Unnecessary and overly wordy introduction/personal musings: I love opening lines so much. When I worked at a bookstore, I used to open books and hardcore judge them on their first lines. I had barely any free time to read at that point so if it didnā€™t grab me in the first line or two, I put it back. The first Harry Potter book is actually in my pile of really good openers. ā€œMr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.ā€ (Subtle alliteration, HELLO??) So I'm super excited to see if my own first lines come even close to the standards that I apply to other people lol. MY OWN MONEY IS ON NO. I have the feeling that I'm so frantic trying to get the story down on paper before the good words disappear from my head that I'm not actually paying attention to the first line. BUT LET'S SEE, SHALL WE.
So just straight up going backwards, I've written and posted TWO BRAND NEW THINGS after being away from fandom almost entirely for 10+ years! They're drabble length but they're shiny and new! <3 (All available fics are linked!)
1. Tango:
She teaches them to dance so that they can dance with her but when Atem gets that mischievous smirk on his face and pulls Yugi into his arms, their bodies sparkĀ and the dance floor smolders at their heels.
(The fic is so short that this is a full 1/5 of it but actually, I think I crammed all the good stuff right into that first line. This already might be my favorite. Like it says there in the line itself, Puzzleshipping.)
2. No Betting:
Anzu sat at the kitchen table writing carefully calculated answers onto sticky notes before attaching them to a fourth-grade math worksheet.
(Peachshipping! This one doesn't pop off until about line five so here's the rest of that bit:)
She had the same arrangement with her spouse as most parents had. When the kids were good they were hers. When they were bad, they were his. And when they were winning at games because they picked up rules with uncanny speed and read their opponents with more insight than ought to be available to a child, they were definitely, definitely his.
3. If you wanted honesty that's all you had to say (working title):
When he realized that the figure sitting under the game shop display window and smoking wasnā€™t Ryou, the physical body response was as though it had discovered a coiled snake not two feet away.
(This one! It's a NEW half finished(?) WIP. I actually started this one before the drabbles but wanted to finish before posting it. Then it got out of hand, then work got out of hand, then I started a couple more projects and well. I keep putting words on it though and eventually there will be a Kleptoshipper that turns into Puzzle and Tender for your reading enjoyment. Also, fair warning - don't use song lyrics as a working title. Every time I look at the document I get the song stuck in my head.)
Now we have polished up reposts of old stories for their move to AO3, where I'll basically keep my master archive. Not full re-writes but I fixed a bunch of typos and awkward sentences and they're much stronger for it. Most of these are from a pairings contest way back when so LOTS of different pairings and lots of AUs!
4. Human:
It was like a bad noir, the thought crossed both of their minds.
(Scifi AU, Rivalshipping. That one's not bad for a first line. Actually no link at the time of writing cause the re-edit is going up in like, a half hour? an hour? a half day? It's my next project after finishing this, finishing up the edit and posting it on AO3. Now with link!)
5. Blood:
Fingers through midnight black hair, whispers in his ear, touches that sizzled along the skin, awakening nerves and senses.Ā 
(Dungeonshipping, Pegasus x Otogi, vampires AU. Oh thatā€™s a nice first line! <3)
6. Crazy for You:
The keys are too large and too heavy for the doctor more used to more modern facilities but she doesn't say anything, just follows the orderly as he pulls the large door open.
(Manipulashipping, Anzu x Marik, Psychward AU. Still one of my favorites from that era. Big bold warning though, THIS ONE CONTAINS NON-CON)
7. Finality:
ā€œWhat are you doing here?ā€
ā€œSaying goodbye.ā€ Bakuraā€™s translucent arms swept across the graveyard. ā€œIs this not an appropriate place for it?ā€
(First two or so bits of dialogue as the first first is a generic question. You can tell this is one of the really old ones just by that but it's a sweet, sad little Tendershipper that still has a special place in my heart.)
8. Pieces of You:
Glitter caught the light, leaving shimmering trails in the air as it got everywhere.
(Glittershipping, Anzu x Kisara. Another one that's special to me. Kisara is my girl and my first writing muse. <3)
9. Cambodia:
ā€œIt was summer of fifty three...ā€
ā€œWait a minute, wait a minute, it can't have been fifty three. You might be that ancient but I'm not. It must have been sixty three.ā€
(Jiishipping. Yes. Sugoroku x Arthur. HEY, IT CAME UP IN THE RANDOM DRAW FOR THE SHIPPING CONTEST OK. And my writer's brain hasn't backed down from a challenge yet... Another one that takes 4 lines to pop off but it's a good start. Actually, here's the rest of the bit just because I cannot get enough of these two bickering:)
ā€œWhat do you mean it must have been sixty three? You don't even know what story I'm trying to tell.ā€
ā€œAm I in it?ā€
ā€œWhat?ā€
ā€œSo you're deaf now as well as daft? AM I IN IT?ā€
ā€œOf course you're in it, y'old coot. Don't know why I'd tell a story without you in it when both grandkids are sitting here.ā€
10. Coffee and Cigarettes:
"Cigarettes and coffee? That's not a very healthy lunch."Ā 
Mana crossed her legs and took a refined sip of her own coffee even as her company was not.Ā 
(Mischiefshipping, Mana x Thief King Bakura. Oh this one I'm actually sad that it doesn't immediately sparkle in the first line cause it's one of my absolute favorites of everything I've written. And I think it's the only time I've ever written Mana but I LOVED IT AND HER. Oh no! I lied, I've written her at least one other timeĀ though I don't think that one quite captures her sheer chaos energy like this one does.)
11. A Million Missed Chances:
Somewhere along the line, someone made a choice.
(This one. THIS ONE. I think this is by far the most epic idea I've tackled. I still don't know if the sheer scale of the thing came across in the actual fic but in my head it was massive and I remember pounding away at my teeny tiny laptop late at night because the whole thing hit me maybe a day or so before the story was due for the pairings contest. We only had a week to write each fic and my really good ideas never came to me before the very last minute. T.T Conquestshipping, Mai x Valon.)
12. A Fear of Falling:
She drove.
Like she always did when something bothered her.
(Oh the first chapter on this is also one of the really ancient ones. Like one of the very first things I wrote. That first chapter really shows its age and is a little shaky but the others are better and the last one is what fits into the chorological order here. Polarshipping, Jou x Mai. One of my very first ships. Probably THE first actually <3)
13. What Our Creators Make Us:
"Well, well." The match flared, scattering dark shadows until it was blown out and the only light that remained was the red glow from the cigarette end. "I didn't think I'd ever see you again."
(Psychoshipping, Marik x Spirit of the Ring Bakura. With a bit of Bronze, Angst and Tender in the follow up. Old but I'm ridiculously proud of it, hence it's place in the master archive. Ahaha you can tell how old it is though by how clever I think I am. I thought it was funny to make my audience figure out who was talking and not reveal the characters for a good fourth to third of the fic. Ahhhhhhh. Sorry about past me.)
14. A Revolution of the Spirit:
It wasn't fair.Ā  It just wasn't.
That they were close was understandable (you don't get much closer than sharing headspace) but that even now, after deals were made with gods, endless arguments, compromises and the ultimate guilt trip that he had only been a teenager when he willingly sacrificed himself for all of humanity, things she had only half seen and only partly understood even though they had all been there to witness, that even now Atem continued to invade Yugi's personal space as though he belonged there got on her nerves.
(Woah Nelly! That third sentence should probably be three, four and five. Even if I just split it in half we'd continue the pattern of things popping off in the fourth line. I think that's one pattern that's emerging! A really good bit takes me about four lines to set up and deliver! Oh, the challenge was Revolutionshipping, Anzu x Atem, but the fic is actually Spiritshipping, Anzu x Yugi x Atem.)
So confession time, I haven't been out of fandom completely, I just hadn't written my own standalone stories in a very long time. There are a few (ok ok more than a few) long-running rps that @miss-moberg and I have been adding to on and off over the years. I can't resist throwing in a couple of these.
15. Cafe!
The door shut behind them with the soft click of the latch and the exhale of a breath long held.
(This opening line was from December of 2020 when we rebooted a very old Prideshipper and that is a damn good opening line if I do say so myself. I can definitely see the difference now between the newer works and the older ones. I've gotten better, she's matched me pace for pace and eventually something will be finished, I'll work up the courage to ask permission to post it and the whole internet will get to see how brilliant the two of us are together.)
16. Treasure Hunt!
"Ryou, I think you're going to regret letting me tag along on your adventuring this time."Ā  Yugi didn't bother turning away from the airplane's tiny window to see if his seatmate was paying attention.Ā  He was more thinking out loud with his friend playing the role of a convenient sounding board.Ā  "Because I think this trip is the only thing I'm going to talk about ever again."
(One more from RP because it's got that fun, four line punch that we've discovered is a pattern for me! Opening entry is from 2017.)
Also, in truth, my count is a little off when I say I'd been out of fandom 10+ years. I've been away from YGO for that long but I did spend a brief stint in Homestuck where I read a ton of fanfic, flirted with a couple group RPs and even wrote a tiny bit. 9 years without writing a new fic isn't as impressive as sayingĀ ā€˜over a decadeā€™ but it is a little more accurate.
17. What You Will:
In the land of fair Illyria, along a small, sandy stretch of its rocky shore, a ship has come to ruin and one lone woman lies still as death among broken wood.
(The beginning of a Homestuck/Twelfth Night crossover that I'm still determined to work more on someday. It's only got a single chapter but it's magic though now I'm concerned about not being able to recapture that. Not a bad first line though. The style is so different it took me reading it a couple times before going, oh yeeeeeah, that's pretty good!)
18. Relentless:
You pull him to the deck and then across it by the remains of his shirt. Let him say one last goodbye. His ship pillaged, his crew murdered, his hands bound behind his back and at your mercy.
Funny word, that. Mercy.
(The first line is pretty decent but there's that four line combo again! Five but I could basically fix that with a comma. Featuring the troll ancestors Mindfang and Dualscar because every time Hussey introduced new characters they were instantly my favorite.)Ā 
19.Ā Black:
There is dark and there is dark and there is dark and then there is black. She is black. Licorice and coal. She is hate and resentment and everything that tastes bitter, the kind of black that coats the tongue like oil, drips down the back of the throat and keeps going.
(Oh wow. Am I allowed to say that about my own work? A Terezi/Vriska drabble that I'm putting as much here as I think I can get away with because it's so good that it fucks me up a little going back and reading it.)
And here it gets tricky because I think the more recent of the old, old fics are in the Drabbles and Shorts collection on ff.net and I can't see a post date. So I'll just pick a good one to end on.
20. Two Princes:
It was inevitable as the rising of Ra's chariot after a long night, as the flooding of the river banks every spring, and Atem always knew that Yugi's kiss would be as warm and gentle as the evening breeze in the summer that brought relief from the scorching day. It was.
(How about the final honor going to more Puzzle/Blind? This probably has the strongest first line of its era. Actually I'm not sure when it was written. It was just hanging out in my writing folder and, thinking about it, I probably wrote it when I was fading from fandom the first time around but still trying to hang in there. No wait! Thatā€™s too sad, we canā€™t end on that! Lets add one more to the list for the sake of personal narrative!)
21. Linger:
The world doesn't need him anymore. It doesn't need his sword and it doesn't need his pen.
(A tiny Princess Tutu afterward that I wrote for myself. Nice one-two punch in the opener. Also it rounds out the personal story that accidentally developed here with a line later in the fic, "Words, however, never stray far from a good writer..." Like, wait, stop. Past me, how did you know T.T)
Did that take a sudden emotional turn for anyone else or was that just me. Can I offset that a little with an honorable mention? Letā€™s do that while I collect myself. Hereā€™s one more.
Honorable mention: Ryou and the Thief
There was a storm gathering and too much magic in the air. Much more than occurred naturally and magic at this level was never a good thing.
(I canā€™t have a list of things Iā€™ve written without having Ryou and the Thief on it. If you click on this one though, BEWARE, itā€™s old, itā€™s silly and it has a ton of explicit gay sex thatā€¦ would be written very differently if we were handling it today Iā€™m sure! This is the first RP @miss-moberg and I ever did together and our excuse to Gemship and Puzzleship turned into us running the boys through a whole adventure based on the Osiris myth. Itā€™s the longest thing Iā€™ve ever completed and Iā€™d still consider it kind of my legacy.)
And thatā€™s the last 21(+1!) stories that Iā€™ve written!Ā 
The clear winner of best first line for me is 15. Cafe! Itā€™s short, elegant and manages to contain a whole mood even without the context of whatā€™s going on and whoā€™s involved. (Spoilers: Itā€™s Seto and Mokuba making an AU escape from Gozoboro.) Close second is Tango, the most recent story. Itā€™s neat to see just how much better Iā€™ve gotten and also really cool to see that even if the first line itself doesnā€™t contain a punch, itā€™s usually because thereā€™s a nice, strong idea being set up and delivered in the first four lines (or so). What a pleasant surprise!
AND WOW, this whole tag thing didn't need to be so long! Or personal! Seriously, if you get this tag from me the challenge is only to list the first lines to 20 stories and maybe try to draw one or two conclusions from them. You all thought I was joking when I said I loved talking about my own writing! But actually, I guess itā€™s fine like this as I ended up using it as a way to re-introduce myself. Like, "Hey, I used to live here a long time ago and oh my god I love what you've done with the place!" Rather than being someone who's just popped up out of nowhere a few weeks ago to creepily bother all your best of the best creators so....

Playlist Update? From MY Brain? More Likely Than You Think
can't remember the last time I posted these all together but I just put a few new songs in. I've been playing Arknights bc STARSET songs keep being used in the trailers, and then I was listening to Transmissions while making dinner, and uhhhhh there's two new Transmissions songs on the playlists, plus whatever else the spotify links needed to update to my ever-changing apple versions.

Dark Matter
Surprise surprise, this oneā€™s got probably the most work done on it. A lot of that is moving things around, a few deletions, and the additions.
DM now starts with Your World Will Fail, Dark Matter, and Eater of Worlds. Turn the Lights Out still kinda applies, but I stopped vibing with it starting everything, and wasnā€™t really sure where else it should go so it got dropped. Itā€™s role is sort of picked up by a UtA song later? Anyway, the opening three are still very much about not only the birth of [REDACTED], but the birth of the universe itself. And thatā€™s why it feels better to start out with YWWF. Because it is the start.

Remnants of Stars is a hook to Filaments at this point, but stays way up here because the thing itā€™s about connects back up to those three ^ and is something slowly realized by the Paladins throughout the series. Thereā€™s kinda three different points that they realize something new about this (at the moment, I Am the One, Cosmic Vertigo, and Centigrade).

Apocalypse 1992 hasnā€™t changed. Still about The Fall, still the turning point for the entire damn war. Still about poor Krolia. Still the Rogue One of DM. It happens between parts of Awakenings, detailing the rise of [REDACTED] and the final hours before the destruction of everything sentient species knew beforehand.
(Fly high through apocalypse skies/Fight for the world we must save/Like tears of a unicorn lost in the rain/Chaos will triumph this day)
Apex is the final moments of Apocalypse 1992 from the Red Lionā€™s perspective, and connects nicely (just as in the albums lol) to the next UtA songs. Which weā€™ll get to in a bit.

You Keep What You Kill covers the slow degeneration of the Empire between The Fall and the Battle of Arus. The knowledge harshly taught by the Thuanial War is forgotten under the influence of Zarkon, Haggar, and [REDACTED]. Marzin and Galraasa quickly rise the ranks as the Empireā€™s left and right hands, like omens of destruction before them. The four are the ā€˜holy half-dead,ā€™ the ones who shape the devouring of the universe before them.

The Glory and the Scum is partially here bc I missed having Delain, Iā€™ll freely admit that. (Delain split up! Like six months ago! Iā€™m still sad!) Here, itā€™s (most) of the reason why Krolia isnā€™t around until MGHM. Think Winter Soldier-ish. Itā€™s also from Kroliaā€™s perspective as sheā€™s talking to Kolivan in a conversation I implied in Shatterpoint. Perhaps it shall see the light of day.

The Seven Sisters is about Keith, mostly, and connected to Closure via its influence on Child From the Stars (Lost in the Dark) and also to Memories of a Girl I Havenā€™t Met. Also the thing about the Pleiades has kinda become A Thing associated with my two favorite halfbloods.

Starlight is the Adashi song. Here, itā€™s the sad part, based around the time that the SFSS Genesis launches for Kerberos. It also is sort of about Shiroā€™s thoughts throughout the war as he watches ā€˜from distant skiesā€™ (and influences String Theory kinda)

Waking Dream and Abyss are Awakenings. Theyā€™re specifically the Red Lion waking up on Sendakā€™s ship to her new Paladin, but also sort of the rest of the Lions as they find new Paladins for the first time since The Fall (and, also, an accidental hook to the end of Filaments just by virtue of being on the same UtA albumā€¦)

Who Will Save You Now is about the Paladins in First Contact. Itā€™s the video messages they send to their families, the warning that Something Is Out Here that they need to prepare for. Itā€™s a declaration of protection for Earth, but a recognition that the Paladins may not be able to do what they say.

Then thereā€™s The End of the Beginning. Which is, well, the eponymous fic. And donā€™t forget the String Theory connection! Fun fact: part of the last chapter leads directly into part of String Theory at the moment.

A Simple Plan is about anything but a simple plan. Lotor is making his secret bid for the construction of the Sinkline ships, but thereā€™s one more thing he needs before it can come to fruition. Haggar has suspicions, and knows one thing that she needs to keep from both him and Voltron. Team Voltron is still struggling to fit into their new roles, especially with a Black Paladin who adamantly does not want to be Black Paladin, and is in desperate need of one thing to fix the last of the damage done during the Battle of the Sarnan Nebula.

Memories of a Girl I Havenā€™t Met. Such a short song for such an important fic. It skips all the way over Naxzela to the Mission to the Baaria Shipyards, the first major offensive that isnā€™t somehow connected to canon (even if only a very very small part of it is actually at the shipyards lol). This is also the song that solidified Keithā€™s very queer identity in Dark Matter. And more Pleiades stuff!

Thereā€™s another fic in here that Iā€™m still waiting for a song to catch my ear, but itā€™s pretty big so Iā€™m putting it in here. For the moment, itā€™s called MGHM 2.0: Electric Paladinloo. Featuring the Whispers, Voltron, and a few mullets.

Weā€™ve got [REDACTED], weā€™ve got [spoiler], weā€™ve got the first major turning point in the entire war, and the first revelation of the true nature of [REDACTED]. Hence the honor of being the separation point of my two main DM folders. TRIALS is the first part, the horrifying realization. Dark On Me and String Theory itself are from Shiroā€™s perspective. I Am the One isā€¦ an image song? I guess? Thatā€™s all Iā€™ll say on that. (I would like to note that the STARSET songs bar OWtT tend to be about the Shiroganesā€¦)

House on Fire is the aftermath of String Theory, and a large vibe of We ARE Struggling Together! Itā€™s about family, never letting go of something you care about, and the slow act of trusting.

Belgrade is The klance song! It is a) a bop b) always stuck in my head because it is That Good. The line in the chorus about ā€˜sweet songs of seductionā€™ is eternally funny to me bc a)theyā€™re both ace and b)QPRā€™s donā€™t usually involve seduction. Belgrade also leads almost directly intoā€¦

Iron is the third Closure fic (the second is End of the Beginning, forgot to mention that. Theyā€™ve slowly moved away from actually being related to it in anything but name and general idea). Itā€™s about Keith coming to terms with parts of himself, and learning how to use them to great effect. Also has a huge info dump about the Blade.

The second major turning point in the war is Monarch, Birthright, and Firewall. I really recommend reading the whole lyrics for Monarch, because the entire thing is very much a Lotor song. I had a bit of trouble picking a lyric to use here. Monarch is here because Lotor is also the ā€˜singerā€™ of Birthright, and both songs are to a very specific high-level target of the Coalition. Firewall is a little different as itā€™s a Team Voltron song not a Lotor song, but happens because of the same thing the other two do. Theyā€™re all not exactly a direct result of Iron, but they wouldnā€™t happen how they do without it, and then [REDACTED] swings back into the fray and things learned in String Theory/the framing story for Through Apocalypse Skies hit in full force.

Supersonic is hereā€¦ kinda as a placeholder? Things have shifted around since its original purpose, and frankly itā€™s here still as a framework for what I like to call The Meme Battle. Itā€™s generally about the increase in Coalition support and general winning as they go after warlords in the aftermath of Feyiv, culminating in I Need a Hero which is, of course, The Meme Battle.
Yes, itā€™s the Shrek version. Itā€™s the Meme Battle.

But Tonight We Dance isnā€™t exactly a klance song, but itā€™s here for them. On a diplomatic mission gone wrong, the Red and Blue Paladins of Voltron uncover a literally-buried government conspiracy, a rebel cell, and nearly die. A normal days work for the two of them. But theyā€™ve really gotta stop having relationship milestones in the middle of a warzone.
Another reason itā€™s here is Tonight We Dance is a very aro song to me. ā€œA language universal, but I speak not its tongueā€ hits hard. I felt like I needed a bit in here to remind listeners/readers that romance isnā€™t a language Keith speaks. And it becomes very explicit in this fic, just like Belgrade.
(Tomorrow we might wake in servitude and silence/I will give you everything if only you would have me/Tomorrow we will sweat and toil/Our hands will quiver, caked with soil/Tomorrow we'll give it one last chance/But tonight we dance/But tonight we dance!)
But Tonight We Dance is the last of the Closure fics, which is why itā€™s here. Closure in general is a lot of Keithā€™s character development and some of the struggles he goes through to accept his place in the universe and the fact that yes, he does have people that care about him. The last fic is me shining a brighter light on Closureā€™s chorus and taking a ā€˜last goodbyeā€™ as never needing to say it again

Trophy Hunter, Ember, and Redemption are the culmination of Godhunter. Iā€™ve been thinking of them as akin to the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2, if that gives you an idea of what the hell they run into. Also I switched which specific Redemption is on the playlist, because I was listening to Red Handed Denial again and their Redemption was vibing way more than the Hammerfall one. They link up to Godhunter and Soulbound in subject matter, and lead directly intoā€¦

Holy shit it took over a year and I barely remember which fanfic ask this is about...I think it's like a director's cut one? REGARDLESS! I do remember the star was to like talk about whatever - and while looking for a WIP I came across an attempt to answer this WITHIN a wip? Past Nico what were you thinking?!
I do know this was written sometime before Ch15 of Terpsichore came out, because there were a few references? But I rephrased the wording a bit.
Forgive me for using this as an excuse to just babble on about how I choose the music titles for chapter sections in Terpsichore, but also, I'm not entirely sorry haha Without further Ado! Hereā€™s hoping this rambling makes sense haha!!
ā­ AN ANSWER!ļ¼ˆā™„ļæ«ļ½ļæ©ā™„ļ¼‰
So itā€™s taken me a long time to figure out how I wanted to answer this. For a while I was going to ramble about M*A*S*H how it was a rather formative show for me growing up, especially in its anti-war message as well as how it feels like a comedy played in a minor key. There was even going to be a link to a video essay on the show, and then I was going to hint at a want to write a series following the changelings in a pre-show context in the sort of vibe M*A*S*H gave.
But it got lost, and weightyā€¦andā€¦idk, I canā€™t seem to stick to a lot of things these days? I donā€™t know.
But thereā€™s always been in me the want to attempt to explain why I choose the music pieces I choose to title the sections in each chapter. Cause despite the little message at the bottom of the first chapter and the last chapter talking about motifs leitmotifsā€¦writing prose is nothing like composing music.
And not only that Iā€™m sure less than half of the people reading the fic will listen along with the playlist. Which is 100000% fine! I anticipate it even!
Because at best, those sectional pieces serve less as soundtrack more like a silent movieā€™s musical medley.
Because itā€™s the written word, and Iā€™m not Andrew Hussie ldgj though the day I find out how to put a little ā€˜play buttonā€™ to listen to music during a fic, I might do that. But at this point in time Hell No haha.
Despite this, there is a process behind my music selections.
There is a difference between what I consider ā€˜corpse de balletā€™/ ā€˜ensembleā€™ sections, and ā€˜leadsā€™ / ā€˜duetā€™ sections.
Or what my poor readers go through as ā€˜a shit ton of prospective shiftsā€™ and two prospectives at best, at the same time. I donā€™t know why Iā€™m such a fan of bouncing between perspectives so much that you probably feel seasick. I always consider it a miracle anyone understands what the heck is going on dfjglk The answer is probably because I like third person omniscient writing, and am a sucker for situational/character irony. But Iā€™m also a grammar school drop out haha and donā€™t actually know the rules of writing by heart? Iā€™m just a fool with a bunch of vibes and a dictionary doing their best lol.

But yeah! Enough borderline weird self deprecating! Letā€™s talk music!!
So! Usually when writing a section I try and think about who are the central characters in the section, and or what is the theme/emotion Iā€™m trying to call on. Is there a motif, or a reference I can play on musically? An idea or concept I can echo or even enhance? Will it be a specific genera of music tied to a character because that character embodies and or is known for a specific genera (example: Nomura and Opera- more on that at during ACTII )
Once I answer those questions, Iā€™m able to narrow down my music choices. Which, again, acts more like a book of suggested musical medley orchestras and musicians would purchase during the silent movie era as like a cheat sheet of what they could play during a specific scene.
Soā€¦for instance, for a character like Barbara Lake I wouldnā€™t use video game music -or maybe I couldā€¦but it would only be in terms of perhaps referencing her son.- who I would have a higher chance at choosing to select a video game music piece for (hang on to your butts ACT II Zelda soundtrack).
In the fic Iā€™ve built the idea that in order to explain Barbaraā€™s ability to paint, that she not only took classes but was part of the production team in putting on a play, mainly in set design painting props. Which opens me to a world of musical options when it comes to Barbaraā€™s character. Especially when certain musicals hold songs that can be really fitting to her character later on. An example of this can be seen in ch3 ā€œAquariusā€, and ch14 ā€œJuliaā€.
Ch3 is Barbaraā€™s big planned picnic date. The first date she and Walter go on after she ingested the binding spell. The two of them coming together, but also the magic of which awakening something magical inside.
And Ch14 in which the binding spell is broken, but also whatever was holding Barbaraā€™s potential to reaching towards that magical something inside her is also broken. And in a sort of my own attempt at written diegesis between the narrative and the song selections in the sections, the lyrics to Aquarius is written out as Barbara depends into the water. In which it is no longer the dawning of Aquarius, Aquarius is starting to take center stage. Their cue is played.
That would be my example on a very character driven musical choice.
Not only that, but it is at Ch3 where Walter is influenced more and more to Barbaraā€™s appreciation to musicals, so much so that it begins to influence his own array of music pieces. His dreams no longer dialogue from movies he fell asleep to, but sometimes full on reproductions of staged musicals and plays. An example of this can be seen in Ch11 On the Right Track from Pippin the Musical - which oof I could go into a full dissertation on in regards to changelings/Pippin and The Pale Lady/Leading Player.
Not only that, but due to influence from Barbaraā€™s love we get the moment of Walterā€™s ā€˜I wantā€™ section piece in the form of Ch9 ā€œCorner of the Skyā€ (aka Pippinā€™s I want song as well). The moment before this happened there was the interaction with Angor AND Otto AND the repercussions of Angor attacking the school. It is clear to these characters that Strickler is not giving his all in killing Jim, and perhaps never tried to give his all. Something that Otto proclaims as Strickler making excuses, and Strickler insists is tact.
Then there is the situational character driven choice.
Iā€™m going to continue to use Barbara as an example here, and say that THIS can be seen in Ch2 ā€œNo. 9 ā€“ Finale Andanteā€ and ch12 ā€œLe Lac Des Cygnes Introduction: Moderato Assaiā€
Both of these music pieces come from Swan Lake. The reasoning behind the choice is probably asinine in thought process (Barbara Lake, Swan Lake), but also thought out in the sense of the following:
In Season3 of Trollhunters Morgana, in order to attempt to reacquire her shadow staff from Strickler (ā€œThe Exorcism of Clair NuƱez), transforms herself to take Barbara Lakeā€™s physical form.
IN THE BALLET SWAN LAKE The wizard Von Rothbart, in order to obtain what they want, transforms (granted someone else) Odile to look like the hero Odette in order to trick the prince into proclaiming this imposter Odile as their one true love. In which Odile is the mirror to Odette, and while looking similar (in fact typically the ballerina who performs as Oddette would also perform as Odile) are opposites in spirit.
And, at least in Terpsichore, what near primordial eldritch force can rival that of the Eldritch Queen that we know from cannon will inevitably impersonate Barbara Lake?
But wait, thereā€™s more.
In chapter 2 the piece used in section 2 is the end of ACTI from Swan Lake. The music hints not only the arrival of Odette, but also her inevitable tragedy. What is written in this section, briefly at that cause we watched how the scene plays out in the show, you donā€™t need me writing that back at you, but I digress- What is WRITTEN in this section is Barbara sipping the enchanted tea that binds herself to Waltolomew Strickler. Something that you, the viewer and fan will know ends in tragedy, as do I the writer and also fan knows will end in tragedy. The only people out of the loop here are the poor poor characters.
And then the revolving door of bad situations that is ch12 happens, and we return to Swan Lake with ā€œLe Lac Des Cygnes Introductionā€ In which Barbara is introduced to Jim Lakeā€™s Trollhunting world, finally. But wait! Thereā€™s EVEN more.
Because not only is Barbara introduced to Jimā€™s Trollhunting world, Barbara begins to allow herself an introduction to that weird magical more thatā€™s inside her via dream. And YOU/WE the reader/writer/audience, are introduced to the strange figure Giselle is talking to on the beach of Lake Superiorā€¦whoā€¦well, youā€™ve probably already have an idea as to who that figure is ;)c
There are also moments when I just select a song piece because I think it fits Thematially well - ch11ā€™s ā€œPowerhouseā€ section. Aka the music that plays in Looney Tunes whenever an assembly line montage occurs - to which in that section Jim Draal and Walter are putting together the booby-traps to thwart Angor Rot (as well as try to reassemble some sort of emotional connection between them). Or it could be a reference to a meme I really enjoyed, example Ch12ā€™s ā€œRoundaboutā€ aka the music piece known vernacularly as ā€œThe Jojo Memeā€ but also likeā€¦meme aside itā€™s really good and fits and just lkfgjkgsdj I have a lot of feels about Roundabout and I wonā€™t apologize for it haha
And yet, something I pride myself in, is that you donā€™t need to know all of this to enjoy the story. It isnā€™t necessary to listen to the Swan Lake pieces or even the Musicals, or even the Jojo Meme. Because, if I did my job right, those echoes ought to be in the writing. The pieces to the section have always been optional. Just little markings in a booklet to be given to you the reader/composer as a suggestion and you can choose to play those pieces along to the silent film, or boot up a ragtime. And thatā€™s the power you have. And thatā€™s equally as wonderful!
