Disco Elysium Skills and Tarot Card Faces connections

I had not really counted the amount of skills you had to juggle in my playthroughs of DE. The first time the sheer amount was so overwhelming I never got around to trying to count. 

But once I figured out that there were 22 of the motherfuckers, my mind instantly made the connection. 

Encyclopedia[Easy:Success] - There really isn’t any other assortment of 22 distinct human aspects that they could have based this off of instead.

It was a kind of immediate connection and I’m not sure if it’s correct because if we were to lay the two out I’m not sure the skills really match up with the Arcana.

Perception[Medium: Success] - Nope. That don’t match at all.

 Pain Threshold[Godly: Failure] - The JPEGS are like fiberglass in my eyes!

It’s kind of a disappointing realization. I was hoping that this connection could open a whole new world of analysis for characters and the world. Oh well...

Rhetoric[Medium: Success] - Hold on! Let him cook.

This game is loaded to the brim with allusions and references to narrative tropes and cultural cliches from our world, reassembled by the character in the DE world. Most notably, the fictional detective, Dick Mullen, and how that story influences Harry’s idea of what a cop should be able to do.  

We are being told about how stories can shape people’s perspective on themselves and also be used to justify people’s actions.  

The Tarot are themselves telling a story, with each face representing a character met and their influence on the fool’s perspectives and actions. 

Conceptualization[Formidable: Success] - The Journey of life is a long and winding one, beset by all manner of challenges and teachers. The Fool's Journey is meant to teach us to be open to their guidance. We may mirror his path to enlightenment.

Logic[Medium: Success] - It sounds like a stretch, but I’ll go along with it.

Suggestion[Formidable: Success] - Maybe another example would prove the point?

Encyclopedia[Medium: Success] - That brings us to the actual descriptions.

Rhetoric[Medium: Success] - We will prove our contention by way of analytic  comparison!

There is also similarity in the way the game describes the Skills and the way one would be told about the attributes of the Arcana. There is a duality to each face that is replicated in the Skills descriptions. 

Suggestion[Formidable: Success] - Yes Disco Elysium Tarot readings! People are going to love this.

Logic[Legendary: Failure] - Nope. That don’t match at all.

Conceptualization[Medium: Success] - This could have been nice with more effort. Not shitty enough to be ironic, not neat enough to be professional. Just bland.

Pain Threshold[Legendary: Failure] - The migraine is coming from within the screen!

Please note that at High Levels Logic has two effects:

You will be able to smart enough to figure things out, but you will arrogant and thus easily blinded. 

When compared to the Fool’s stats and descriptions

Oops.

Encyclopedia[Legendary: Failure] - Look man, I don’t know anywhere near enough about Arcana to actually back up anything I’m saying.

Suggestion[Legendary: Failure] - All these soothsayer- types ever do is talk endlessly about their made up card people and their made up symbolism. Just keep spouting bullshit and they’ll buy it!

Suggestion - No one actually gives a crap about what any of this actually means. They just want to feel Spiritual. 

Authority[Godly: Failure] - Command their spirits! Yield your knowledge over the herd like a slave driver wields the whip. You will be like a god.

Hell yeah we're over halfway done! Isn't that crazy? I don't have too much to say here sooooooo onto the usual stuff

Designs under the cut!

VRISKA:

Vriska has an extra set of arms that they can retract and extract whenever they please. However, they usually keep those arms hidden.

The long needle she's holding is her trusty sword that she's used since her pirate days. She doesn't use it as much as she used too, but it's good to keep it on her for self defense in case of an emergency.

The marks on thier neck and shoulders aren't tattoos, they're birthmarks.

Good at sewing, as she often would have to fix her coat after getting into epic pirate sword fights. Sara and Vriska are sewing buddies!

It is unknown why they're unable to sleep, but while the rest of the team sleeps they often find themselves wandering around and doing whatever they want.

Artist's note: I based Vriska's design off the fact that I wanted to make her look like a bootleg version of the og Vriska. As in "Hey that's Vriska" but also "That's not VRISKA" if you get what I mean

MALL BINGO:

Trained herself to become resistant to poison (and by "trained" I mean she just ate a bunch of poison until her body became almost immune to it... please don't try this at home.)

Often goes scavenging for items when she's doesn't feel like robbing someone. If she's lucky enough she'll find some good items scattered around because "stupid trainers often leave good shit on the ground for some reason" (due to all the items you can pick up from the ground ingame lmao)

Mal lost her leg in one of her first heists, after she and another pawmi tried stealing from the wrong person at the worst possible time.

The gun she keeps with her wasn't originally hers, it belongs to someone else.

On a more positive note, Mal has plenty of stories and tall tales to share. She learned them from the eldest in her little pawmi group, as they would often tell her stories before going to sleep. Mal will often share those same stories with Peppy Jr and Mykyie Jr.

Can and will bite you. You won't be expecting it. Be warned.

GRUNPILO:

Due to his abundantly long hair, Grunpilo often lets Mal play around with it and style it however she wants.

It is unknown how or why he picked up on puppetry specifically, but it makes him happy so who are we to judge?

Speaking of which, he creates his own puppets by hand, from simple sock puppets to marionettes on strings. The two hand puppets shown are his favorite ones though.

Sometimes he'll be found speaking to them as if they're real.

Not good in social situations or confrontation, so Mal will sometimes have to speak for him. ("EXCUSE ME! He asked for no pickles!" /ref)

EXTREMELY light, very easy to pick up.

And that's all! Only three more batches left woo, hopefully I can finish them by the end of the year lol.

HUGE probs to cc!forever btw i thought he added the furniture thing as a joke option to like- legitimately get under q!bad's skin to give cc!bad an excuse to give his cubito more problems. but no apparently his chat were just instigators and made that suggestion to him 😭

i'm so impressed by how he got blindsided by a Full Lore Mode angry q!bad and kept his cool, and worked to communicate, and admitted when qbad had a good idea about the voting (qbad could NEVER), and went and got Cellbit when he realized the language barrier was too much. absolute king shit over there. like here he is trying to legit make the server better on a meta level and gets blindsided by q!bad's lore problems and he rolled with it so so well. he's doing legit such a good job for the server

and this is like- me being a bad fan, and i know it was an accident, but im very grateful to him for how that shook out. every time bad starts to get a little lore moment or something dramatic for his storyline, it fizzles out or gets overtaken by something else. cc!bad has been doing a great job with his storytelling/roleplaying and building up a narrative of feeling unappreciated/like a helping object instead of a person (and i could GUSH about the parallels between qbad and qforever and how they recognized those feelings in each other) but!! the point is that cc!forever did it. even accidentally. he created a catalyst event that could finally get my favourite little cubito off of his rocker (FINALLY), and bad is a good person to get off of his rocker. this is going to be a gorgeous little storyline that i am going to enjoy so so much. forever wanted to do good for the server and the story and by god he has done it

some cute does with bigass floppy ears / very sweet waitress who called me "hon" and put the most tasty looking crepes on my table / a pair of hawks divebombing a golden eagle / a kite (the bird) / a flock of magpies / some GORGEOUS scenery / a rainbow / lovely rain sprinklings / MORE gorgeous scenery, i mean what the fuck / fields of purple/orange/red tipped bushes / a meadow of buttercup-yellow very tall grass, in which many picturesque trees stood / lots of fluffy, adorable, tasty cows / a large herd of likely-feral horses with a wonderful variety of patterns & colors / the fluffiest husky ever / the juxtaposition of cold wind through an open window + warm sunlight / the most stunning snow-coated mountain of whites and blues in the sun, wreathed in clouds / no seriously some really fucking Gorgeous scenery, i was near tears with some of it
