MAKESHIFT LOVE - GOOD CHARLOTTE
ANOTHER BREAK UP SONG OR IS THE GIRL A METAPHOR FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
~By Stephanie Lyon
I downloaded ‘Makeshift Love’ from iTunes moments after its release in Australia and within the first few listens I couldn’t help but think ‘Makeshift Love’ was lyrically deeper than a song about a relationship breakdown. Personally, I feel the girl could be a metaphor for the music industry. I’m not saying I’m right or wrong. Who am I to know? I’m really just a fan but since art is always open to interpretation this is my reading:
I fucking hate these nights, the ones where you don’t know me
If I could get this right, if I could get away from the old me
But I’ll survive, right now I’m dying just to breathe in
Just to be alive, just to get away from the old me
Here I imagine a band on a stage going through the motions of having all the things they ever wanted. However they find themselves unhappy because they’re on stage playing out the personas of their older selves; the people they aren’t anymore. They can’t wait to get off the stage so they can stop pretending. I’m not saying this is ‘Good Charlotte’ however we’ve all heard about music industry/ record label executives with no real idea of who their artists are, and what their artists are trying to do.
The artist has a successful album, and from that moment the record label just wants them to keep regurgitating the same album with a new arrangement of lyrics, chords, riffs, and beats. People constantly evolve, we have experiences, we grow, and its inevitable creative people want to continue to experiment with their art form. However the executives ‘the gatekeepers’ want to stick to a profitable formula and artists can feel trapped in a cycle of being someone they used to be, someone they aren’t anymore. Think back to your younger self. I’m sure there’s elements of our younger selves we all want to get away from. I know I wouldn’t want to be the old me.
There’s only makeshift love tonight
There’s a triage in my living room
She checks my vital signs
Then opens up my wounds
Now I picture an artist at home relaxing after the show in their living room surrounded by their favourite records. The artists making up the triage. They all face the same pressures from music industry stakeholders. The songs they listen too not only check their vital signs (bring comfort and help to heal) but open up their wounds (remind them of the very things that they don’t like about the music industry).
Like I’m dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away
Whoaaa
I’m dying tonight
But no one is crying
It’s not alright no matter what they say
Whoaaa
Here I interpret an argument between record label executives and a band because the band wants to change things up. The record label executives play mind games to get their way.
‘If you do this or that now you’ve done that… you’ll be a laughing stock.’
‘If you change your style, your fans will go away.’
‘You went on hiatus, people won’t even care if you return or not?’
'If you don’t come back nobody will cry… so if you won’t do things our way you’re off the label.’
I fuckin’ hate these fights
The ones where you just own me
We used to be so tight (yeah right)
But you just want the old me
Turn off the god damn lights (turn off the god damn lights!)
If you’re really gonna get up and just leave
I used to get so high
But that was just the fucking old me
Now, I feel this continues the anxiety theme of making a comeback or an artist following their heart and standing up to record label executives. Arguing with people who you once thought got you; whom you once felt close too but you now know were only using you for their own gain. I can imagine a band trying out their new sound to a room of record label executives to find the executives don’t believe in/support the new sound and just walk out.
There’s only makeshift love tonight
There’s a triage in my living room
She’ll check my vital signs
To see what else she can do
Like I’m dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away
Whoaaa
I’m dying tonight
But no one is crying
It’s not alright no matter what they say
Whoaaa
All that she wanted was me broken hearted
I know it’s sad but it’s true
I won’t get her started, now she’s departed
There’s no looking back me and
I interpret these lines to sum up the music industry. All the industry wanted was to break the hearts of artists. Like a lover they draw you in with the idea of fame, fortune, and promises but they blind you to their flaws until it’s time to spit you back out. It’s basically giving a middle finger to the traditional popular music industry… we’re gone, and we’re never going back.
There’s only makeshift love tonight
There’s a triage in my living room
She’ll check my vital signs
To see what else she can do
Like I’m dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away
Whoaaa
I’m dying tonight
But no one is crying
It’s not alright no matter what they say
Whoaaa
All that she wanted was me broken hearted
I know it’s sad but it’s true
We all know 'Makeshift Love’ is an awesome song but… What do you think? Is 'Makeshift Love’ a traditional break up song? or is it a tongue and cheek song that uses metaphor to comment on the very real state of the popular music industry?
